Next week we’re off to Dublin, the Unesco City of Literature! Reason good enough to present this black & white impressions from Ireland, foremost Achill Island.
Perfectlight is a Dublin based photographer with a passion for sport photography and seascapes.
Achill Sound – with a view over Bleannahooey Strand
Achill Island is one of my favourite spots in Ireland, Heinrich Böll lived around the corner and loved it too. Thank you, Joan O’Malley, for taking me there!
Evening over Minaun heights, as seen from the main street in Keel village
Heinrich Böll wrote his “Irisches Tagebuch” here. Sorry about that, but my book is german, I quote the first sentence:
Croaghaun, from the top of Minaun heights
Sea level at the west end of Keel beach
… hier roch es schon nach Torf, klang kehliges Keltisch aus Zwischendeck und Bar, hier schon nahm Europas soziale Ordnung andere Formen an: Armut war nicht nur „kein Schande“ mehr, sondern weder Ehre noch Schande sie war – als Moment gesellschaftlichen Selbstbewusstseins – so belanglos wie Reichtum;
Minaun heights covered in fog taken from Keel beach
And because we (Klausbernd and the book fairies Siri and Selma and myself), collect the last sentences as well, here comes the end of the diary:
Rough sea from Purteen towards Inishgallon
Rough sea from Purteen towards Gubalennaun More
It’s beautiful…, isn’t it?
Sons of the sea – fishermen going out from Purteen
The west coast of Ireland ist the perfect place to recharge your batteries.
From top of Minaun heights towards Dooega village

Dina I feel like I just ate a box of chocolates. Those images were breathtaking and the gave such a flavour of the area too. I found myself leaning forward studying all of the bits of the varied landscape. What a magnificent place, and what a magnificent place to recharge batteries. THank you!

I just read: ‘If you want to be a photographer, first leave home.’ As Paul Theroux, a great writer further advises, “Go as far as you can. Become a stranger in a strange land. Acquire humility.”
Reading and looking at your blog, I want to pack my bag again. Ireland ist pure recreation and always worth a visit.

Hallo Dina,

So macht Reisen richtig viel Freude.
Herzliche Grüße zurück
Dina

Hi Dina you asked me about Dublin. The good news is that the city of Dublin is small and easy to walk around. The other piece of good museum is that museums and art galleries such as National Gallery (partly closed at moment) National Museum, Dublin City Gallery; the Hugh Lane, Chester Beatty Library etc are all well worth a visit and entry is free – so you can nip in and out as many times if you like. Some museums not run by the state charge an entry fee. Dublin is full of Georgian buildings and there is a Georgian House Museum at 29 Fitzwilliam Street – there is an entry fee – it’s a long time since I was there so I cannot remember exactly how I rated it. You might like to see a play at either The Abbey or The Gate. All the guide books list the major Dublin sights. A day trip from Dublin worth making is to Glaendalough you could go there via the pretty village of Enniskerry and take in the gardens of Powerscourt House (Kennedy’s of Enniskerry is a good spot to stop for a light lunch). Re eating out in Dublin there is a good guide The Dubliner – 100 Best Restaurants which only costs five euros or so. There is an UNESCO city of literature site you might wish to google. Mostly I hope you have a truly lovely time in my native city. Please be careful – like all capitals there are pick pockets etc around. Happy Holiday.

29 fitzwilliam street it’s pretty well run, visited twice last year, gives you a good information about the georgian dublin, pity that the visitor is not allowed to take photos. but then again just outside of that and the surroundings of merrion square it all the georgian buildings makes it up for the photo opportunity

Hi there,
thank you ever so much for this kind and great infromation, that was a great help!
Our ten days are over now, Klausbernd is on the plane to London and the Bookfayries and I are waiting for our plane to Köln/Bonn at Dublins fine Airport.
You’re right. Once you’re in Dublin, you can see and do everything by walking about. Dublin ist busy, even at this time of the year, but still cosy and intimate, a positive high energetic jewel of a city with lots of different faces. We stayed in a beautiful-excellent hotel (Brooks in Drury Street) and we enjoyed our days in Dublin until the last minute, doing a literary tour through the bookstores, libraries, houses, sweny, pubs. 10 points to Dublin!! We could gladly have stayed another week.
Have a great weekend.
