I’m in love. With the most beautiful, friendly looking sheep you can think of.  What’s so special about a sheep?  When you travel England and Ireland, you see pretty white sheep on green meadows everywhere and, of course, we saw very many in the Lake District, including a few sinister ones. A scary experience – we learned to run and fly quickly! 🙂

A sheep of the Herdwick breed is different; the most hardy of all Britain’s breeds of hill sheep is the cutest thing I’ve ever seen. 95% of all 50,000 or so Herdwicks live within 14 miles of Coniston, Cumbria, most likely to be seen in and around the Duddon valley, the Coniston fells, the Buttermere fells and, through Borrowdale or Wasdale, up to the highest land in England, the Scafells. Look out for them when you go the Lakes!

These ones are so friendly looking, just watching them puts a big smile on my face. 🙂 The bookfairies and myself would love to have two of them in the garden and we’d name them Siri & Selmar, of course! 🙂

Beatrix Potter must have felt exactly the same when she met this very rare breed! The children’s author lived in Hill Top, a truly beautiful place with a magic house. That’s where we met this handsome sheep, by the way. B. Potter was very involved with keeping and breeding Herdwicks, even acting as president of the breed association for a time.

Herdwick lambs are born black, and after a year they lighten to a dark brown colour. The fleece is not easily dyed, and is coarse, and so is best suited to use as carpet wool. The lamb and mutton has a very distinct taste, and was even eaten at Queen Elizabeth II’s 1953 coronation banquet. Cheers! Enjoy your weekend, everybody.

    • 🙂 🙂 Now, you didn’t have too much wine! 🙂 I can assure you, they look pinkish and carry a lot of colourful wool. The colour changes with the age. They are born black and they eventually the turn grey, mixed with a reddish brown, so cute.

  16. Dina…there was no time to call when we were in Salthouse/Blakeney. We did walk to Cley-Next-the-Sea one day from Blakeney….for coffee, but the weather was threatening a downpour…so we walked back to Blakeney Harbour…in a hurry. Next time, OK? Or…come see me in Portland!!! Raye
    As a former spinner/weaver…sheeps (as my Swiss Father-in-Law used to call them) hold a special place…..lovely post.

      oh, dear I feel a bit awful for leaving Cley without telling you; we had to change our plans and left for the Lakes already on the 26th of Sep instead of one week later. So we’re not there when you were here. Better luck next time! By the way, where is Portland, is that far from Cley?     In Englisch ist das sicher noch viel schöner und passt zu Deinen tollen Bildern.

    • Am Freitag nehme ich den Zug nach Ely, eine wunderschöne kleine Stadt zwischen Norwich und Cambridge. Dort besuche ich eine Bekannte von früher. Sie wohnt in einer “Old rectory”, eine riesiges Anwesen. Dort wohnt sie allein mit ihren Hunden. Am Abend fahre ich mit meiner Freundin aus Cambridge (eine Norwegerin) weiter nach Cambridge und am 22.10 bin ich wieder in Bonn. Dort wartet ganz viel Arbeit auf mich, aber ich bin jetzt bestens erholt, das wird schon. 🙂
      Das Wetter in Norfolk ist sehr gemischt, aber wir machen das Beste daraus. .-)

    • Also, Pam’s neualtes Anwesen werde ich jetzt zum ersten Mal sehen, ich bin gespannt. The old rectory hat 6 riiiiiiesengroße Schlafzimmer, alle mit Bad, mehrere Aufenthaltsräume etc. Zuviel für eine Frau und 2 Hunde, oder? Könnte auch ungemütlich sein. Das wäre was für ein große, schöne Wohngemeinschaft. 🙂

    • Für meine Begriffe klingt es fast perfekt, fehlt nur noch ein naher Pferdestall. Wobei mir die Kombination kleineres / mittleres Haus + großer Garten besser gefiele. Aber ich würde auch ein zu großes Haus mit großem Grundstück nehmen 😉 .

    • Also, ich habe Pam gefragt, warum the old rectorys immer so riesengroß sei und sie meinte; die Kirchengemeinde hat immer viel Geld gespendet und einiges ging dann an die Behausung für den Vicar und seine Familie. (Hoffentlich wird es nicht in Limburg falsch verstanden). Der Vicar hatte oft eine große Familie… es gehörte sich einfach so. Der Vicar war früher wichtig, spielte ein große Rolle und dieses Haus war auch ein Art Statussymbol für die village. Heute ist das längst nicht mehr so. Die meisten Old Rectorys sind heute verkauft.
      Übrigens wohnt einen sehr bekannten englischen Schriftsteller gleich um die Ecke von Cambridge in Grantchester in The Old Rectory; Jeffrey Archer. Er wurde mit “Kain und Abel” bekannt.

      Und Limburg: Mir geht das inzwischen so auf die Nerven, dass immer eine regelgerechte Treibjagd veranstaltet wird, sobald sich jemand (vermeidlich) etwas zu schulden hat kommen lassen. Ich finde das inzwischen nur noch widerlich und auch ziemlich nervig. Wobei ich nicht katholisch bin, und das deswegen in dem Fall auch gelassen sehen kann.

    • Wobei es eigentlich auch egal ist, ob groß oder klein, leisten kann ich es mir ohnehin nicht. Es ist mein Schicksal in der Vorstadt zu versauern, bis ich irgendwann gnädigerweise lieber heute als morgen tot umkippe 😦 .

    • Also, ich fand das große Haus nur bedingt schön. Zu groß, zu viel zu pflegen, zu viel was vernachlässigt wird …Es ist eiskalt im Winter, das Haus verschlingt ein Vermögen an Heizkosten und richtig warm ist es trotzdem nie. Pam wird die Rectory, das Haupthaus, wahrscheinlich verkaufen. Das wäre das ideale Haus für eine ältere Wohngemeinschaft statt Altersheim. Pam baut gerade the old barn um. Das wird megaschick, modern, klein und praktisch, gut isoliert und warm. Ach ja. Da wurde ich schon etwas neidisch. Dieser Blick ins Grüne …
      Hmm … wenn du so unglücklich wegen deiner Behausung, Umfeld und alles bist, was du mir immer wieder glaubhaft versicherst – besteht denn keine Möglichkeit dies zu ändern?

    • Nein, ich sitze da in einer Mausefalle. Ich kann nur darauf warten irgendwann mein Erbe anzutreten, leider handelt es sich bei meiner Familie um eine ziemlich langlebige Brut. Pech in doppelter Hinsicht sozusagen.
      Ich habe mir nur schon überlegt, die entsprechenden Blogs zu meiden. Es ist nur noch deprimierender zu lesen, wie zufrieden andere sind. Außer, dass ich immer reingehämmert bekomme, wie schlecht es mir im Vergleich geht, habe ich nichts davon.

      Ich hoffe, du hattest eine schöne Zeit in Camebridge und eine angehnehme Heimreise.

    • Sort of the same size, maybe a little bit bigger, but we also saw other sheep of different pedigree being much bigger. Certainly a bit rounder with all that wool, very cute with they thick legs and the log tails. Like a mix of a Bobtail and sheep. 🙂

    • Dear Johanna, I have never seen any sheep being as wolly as the Herdwicks. You’d love them! 🙂 Apparently the wool is better for rugs than knitting, but you can of course get pullovers too.

    • … tatsächlich sind die Asturischen Schafe nämlich viel klappriger – da wird die Wolle allerdings auch weggeworfen, es kommt nur auf die Schafsmilch an, die in die lokale Käsespezialität muß, den Queso de Cabrales
      (http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queso_Cabrales), übrigens höllisch intensiv und scharf schmeckt, so dass 3 Flaschen Bier nicht reichen, um den Geschmack runterzuspülen. Schönen Abend! Martin

    bei unserem Urlaub am IJsselmeer sind uns ständig riesige Schafherden begegnet (nie eingezäunt auf den knallgrünen Wiesen, sondern durch kleine Wassergräben von der Straße oder der Nachbarwiese getrennt) und ihr Anblick hat mich regelrecht glücklich gemacht! Diese hier sehen aber in der Tat noch einmal ganz anders aus. Auch mir geht es, wie einigen anderen hier: das Gesicht, der Blick des Schafes auf dem dritten Foto ist einfach wunderbar, ja, cute! Klasse, Deine Fotos, wie immer eigentlich,

  53. thank you for the beautiful photos. I love sheep as well although have not seen as many as this. When my husband worked in a wrecking yard in Texas there were a few that the owners kept (for mowing purposes) that roamed through the yard at will. I learned how scary one can be when I was about nine months pregnant and came face to face with its enormous body in my path. I just smiled and backed away slooowy…it was still so beautiful. 🙂

Einmal bekam der “Jetztsindwirabermallustig-Verein” unseres Dorfes ein Schaf geschenkt, in Memorandum eines Hirten, der in der Dorfgeschichte zum Helden wurde (Hans Warsch)…..es landete in unserer alten Werkstatt. Also bin ich mit dem armen Schaf durch die Straßen spazieren gegangen, wahrscheinlich fühlte es sich sehr einsam. Damals war ich 9 oder 10 Jahre alt und ich muss leider sagen, meine Bemühungen das Schaf zu bewegen, haben nicht verhindert…….
    Schmeckt ja auch gut mit griechischem Zaziki und Oliven…..
    Daran hast du mich erinnert, diese Schafe sehen wirklich niedlich und zufrieden aus, zum Glück!

    • Ich weiß nicht, wie einige Leute dazu kommen, Herdentiere alleine zu halten, das ist Tierquälerei pur.
      Trifft man aber immer wieder, ich erinnere mich an eine Gespräch, bei dem meine Gesprächspartnerin nicht davon abzubringen war, ein Pferd einzeln auf die Koppel zu stellen. Es hätte ja sie…dabei Pferde andere Pferde, zum Knappern ect.

      Gut, dass du dich wenigstens gekümmert hast, und dem armen Schaf Auslauf verschafft hast.

      Wir machen uns jetzt bereits für einen Abschiedsabend in einem netten Lokal in Blakeney, “The White Horse”. Kennst du das? Wir haben den schönsten Tisch ausgesucht, mit Blick auf den Hafen. Obwohl… jetzt ist es stockfinster draußen….
      Darum möchte ich auch fahren und nicht laufen, die Straßenbeleuchtung gibt es immer nocht nicht und die Straßen sind eng und nicht überall gibt’s Fußgängerwege.
      Gestern sind wir von Cley durch die Marschen nach Blakeney gewandert, wir waren 3,5 Stunden unterwegs beim feinem Wetter.

  60. What a fun post Dina – and love the photos too. When we were in New Zealand we went to a sheep farm that actually raised sheep of multiple colors – bought I lovely throw for my bed in shades of beige and cream. They were not dyed but were in various beiges, creams and greys. These sheep were very friendly and affectionate. We also saw some sheep shearing and I was amazed at how docile they were as they were shorn. Such a cute little animal aren’t they?!
