Nun sind Masterchen und wir liebklugen Buchfeen bei der lieben Dina eingezogen. Wir haben alle unsere Feensäckchen prall gefüllt mit spannenden Ideen mitgebracht.
Now, Masterchen and we dear and clever Bookfayries have moved in at Dina’s blog. We have brought all our fairy bags packed with exciting ideas. Oh dear, that was quite a job …
Wisst ihr was? Feenkühn fangen wir gleich mit einer der wenigen Veränderungen unseres neuen gemeinsamen Blogs an, nämlich mit Masterchens Symbolkolumne. Sein Leben lang hat Masterchen in der Welt der Symbole gelebt, über sie dicke Bücher geschrieben und gelehrt. So haben wir ihn gaaaanz lieb gefragt, ob er nicht einmal monatlich etwas über Symbole für uns schreiben würde. Wir möchten uns aus diesen Kolumnen nämlich unser eigenes Feensymbollexikon anlegen. Die Bilder werden nicht zu kurz kommen, dafür werden Dina und Selma sorgen.
Do you know what? Brave as we Bookfayries are, we start directly with one of the few changes in our blog, namely Masterchen’s column about symbols. Most of his life our Master has lived in the world of symbols, written big books and lectured about it. So we asked him sooo sweet, if he would write something about symbols for us once a month, because we want to create our own “Fairy`s Encyclopedia of Symbols” namely from these columns.
Just a sketch from our creativity workshop in front of the fireplace where we unpacked our Bookfayrie bags.

Master’s column for the symbolism of the North
Jedes Kind weiß es, der Kompass zeigt nach Norden, und nachts weist uns Stella Polaris, der Nordstern, die Richtung, ein Doppelstern, der 1780 von dem in Deutschland geborenen englischen Astronomen William Herschel entdeckt wurde. Es ist erstaunlich, dass Stella Polaris erst derart spät entdeckt wurde, da er gut mit dem bloßen Auge sichtbar ist. Nord steht also für Orientierung. Das war aber nicht immer so, früher waren die Karten auf den Osten ausgerichtet, denn ex oriente lux, was noch an dem Wort „orientieren“ zu sehen ist. Der Norden liegt auf heutigen Karten oben, im geistigen Bereich.
Every child knows it, the compass points to the North. At night Stella Polaris, the North Star, gives us the direction, a double star, which was discovered by the German born English Astronomer William Herschel in 1780. It is amazing that Stella Polaris was discovered so late as it is easily visible to the naked eye. North stands for orientation. But that was not always the case, the maps were formerly aligned with the East, because ex oriente lux, which is still to be seen in the word “to orientate”. The North is situated at the top of present maps, in the realm of the mind.
Der Norden ist „cool“, Grönland wirbt mit dem Spruch „the coolest place on earth“. Mit „Nord“ assoziiert jeder das Kühle und Klare, man denkt an Eis, an Erstarrung. Besonders seit der Romantik wird jedoch der Norden auch häufig als das gelobte Land der Hyperboräer gesehen, dieses sagenhafte, von Appolon gesegnete Land, von dem aus der Boreas, der Nordwind bläst. Einige griechischen Helden wie Atlas und Herakles mussten sich hier wie die Entdecker des neunzehnten und frühen zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts bewähren.
Der Norden schafft die Helden, die er tötet.
The North is “cool”. Greenland advertises with the slogan “the coolest place on earth”. Everybody associates “cool and clear” with “North”, one thinks of ice and solidification. However, the North is also often referred to as the promised land of the Hyperboreans, especially since the Romantic period it is seen as this fabulous, blessed country by Apollon from which the Boreas, the north wind, blows. Some Greek heroes such as Atlas and Heracles had to prove themselves here as the discoverers of the nineteenth and early twentieth century.
The North creates the heroes who he kills.

Für die deutschen Faschisten war Ultima Thule, der hohe Norden, das Paradies der Arier. Aber auch bereits Charles Dickens war der Ansicht, dass aus dem Norden die geistige Inspiration käme, weswegen er stets nach Norden blickend geschrieben haben soll.
For the German fascists Ultima Thule, the Far North, was the paradise of the Aryans. But already Charles Dickens was convinced that inspiration came from the North, which is why he is said to have been always looking North as he was writing.
Fridtjof Nansen sah den Norden als Tor zum Unbekannten an, zur Anderswelt. Von Expeditionsgeschichten wissen wir, dass diese Anderswelt eine menschenfeindliche Wüste darstellt, in der selbst das Niedliche, wie die Eisbären, mit tödlicher Gefahr verbunden ist. Dickens als Verehrer des Nordens wollte nicht glauben, dass der hohe Norden, z.B. bei Franklins letzter Expedition, englische Offiziere in Kannibalen verwandelte. Am Norden fasziniert uns seine tödliche Natur und Unzugänglichkeit. Trotz vieler Versuche wurde der Nordpol erst im zwanzigsten Jahrhundert von Menschen betreten, die über das Eis kamen.
Fridtjof Nansen considered the North as a gateway to the unknown, to the otherworld. From the history expeditions we know that this other world is a misanthropic desert where even the cute, like the polar bear, is connected with deadly danger. Dickens as an admirer of the North did not want to believe that the Far North, for example at Franklin’s expedition, transformed British officers into cannibals. We are fascinated by this deadly nature and inaccessibility of the North. The North Pole, despite many attempts, was not reached by people who came across the ice before the twentieth century.

Wir Buchfeen finden den Norden toll, da unsere liebe Dina Norwegerin ist, die sogar aus dem Ort des Eishelden Amundsen stammt. Außerdem finden wir es im Norden sooo gemütlich: Holzhaus am See, hoher Schnee, Nordlicht und drinnen oft wie auf Carl Larssons Bildern. Und, „gaaanz wichtig!“, ruft Selma, „der Norden ist exklusiv, er zieht nur wenige naturverträgliche Touristen an und im hohen Norden gibt’s in der Landschaft eh fast keine Menschen weit und breit.“ Für uns Buchfeen symbolisiert der Norden die Natureinsamkeit, aber auch den Wahnsinn und die Grausamkeit, wie man an den nordischen Krimis sehen kann.
This is the text our Master gave us with Dina’s stunning pictures.
We Bookfayries love the North as our dear Dina is Norwegian. She was born and grew up in the town of Roald Amundsen “the Hero of the Ice”. We also find the North sooo cozy: Wooden houses on the lakes, white snow, northern lights and indoors we often feel like in a painting by Carl Larsson. “And, sooo important!” calls Selma, “The North is exclusive, it attracts only a few nature-friendly tourists and in the far North you will find almost no people far and wide.” For us Bookfayries the North symbolizes not only a natural solitude, but also madness and cruelty, as you can see on the Nordic crime fiction.

Guten Abend, liebe Ruth,
es stürmt schon wieder mächtig, aber es sieht nicht so aus, als ob es einen ausgewachsenen Orkan geben wird. Im warmen Zimmer hockend, finden wir das urgemütlich, besonders das Pfeifen des Sturms im Kamin. Auch hier ist es warm, aber ein paar Grad kälter als bei dir in Schweden. Witzig, unsere liebe Dina guckt auch immer bei yr nach, wie das Wetter so wird, Masterchen zieht den Blick auf seine Wetterstation vor.
Bei der Vereinigung unserer Blogs gab`s noch einige Details zu lösen, in denen ja sprichwörtlich die Tücke liegt. Deswegen liest du erst jetzt von uns.

Herzlichen Dank, liebe Susanne,
dein virtueller Kuchen hat uns sehr gemundet – “yummy yummy!” war Semas Kommentar mitten in die gefräßige Stille hinein.
Am Sonntagabend sahen wir den Schluß der 4. Staffel von “Downton Abbey”, wie wir finden, eine gut gemachte Upstairs-Downstairs-Serie, die wunderbar gefilmt ist und bei der Dina, Siri und Selma die wunderbaren Kleider und Frisuren bewundern. Heute war großer Einkauf angesagt, die Weihnachtsdeko wurde entfernt und jetzt wird noch ein wenig gebloggt und dann, ja, dann sehen wir zum krönenden Abschluss das Christmas Special von “Downton Abbey” und hängen vorm Kamin ab.
Nordisch ist es hier gerade gar nicht: Sonnenschein und bis 15 Grad C heute. Aber der Winter wird sicher auch irgendwann mal hier Einzug halten, so hoffen wir. Siri und Selma wollen UNBEDINGT Schnee, Dina und ich ebenso.

first of all thank you very much for this poem. Well, indeed, that’s Northern Mindscapes fresh as wind and sea, the cries of the gulls which resound in ourselves, and sometimes some snow and ice.

How fun to read others’ perspectives about the meaning of the north. I love the north for its ruggedness, and all those reason mentioned about feeling like one lives in a painting. I did not realize that the red I so love was once ox blood. That deserves some more digging on my behalf 🙂

Dear Heather,
the typical Scandinavian red, as you find it on houses and barns in Norway and Sweden, was made of ox blood. In German this red is sometimes called “Ochsenblut” meaning “ox blood”. This colour is still liked, but, of course, nowadays a modern colour is used without ox blood.

I did a little searching yesterday, but information is tougher to come by than a few brief google searches 😉 All I’ve found so far is that oxblood was a popular color in makeup, fashion, and decorating last year. I’m not sure how I feel about the inclusion/exclusion of ox blood in paint. I guess if they were already killed for another purpose, I feel all right about it. I hate to think of waste – but I also don’t like the practice of killing animals when not used for sustenance. Okay, semi-rant over 🙂

Dear Heather,
I guess that they used the blood of oxen being too old or used for their meat. But I am not sure. To kill an oxen just for painting a house would have been too expensive, I suppose.
Of course, we are against killing animals as well, but on the other hand we eat meat. In former times in Northern Europe it was necessary to kill animals for food. I haven`t really decided yet, but I tend not to object if one kills for food.

A great article accompanied by the usual excellent photos. I think it is high time those of us in the Northern hemisphere celebrated our location more, and you both do this so well. Did you ever see the excellent BBC programme ‘Magnetic North’, with Jonathan Meades exploring the Northern heritage? I can recommend it. It is good to see you back, for another year of blogging, this time as a pair!

All six episodes are available on Youtube, how lovely! You see, we live without a television in Norfolk, it’s not that easy to see the brilliant BBC series. 🙂 I once wanted to see a BBC production and went to BBC online, oh my dear, I left immediately. A friendly advice in capitol letters informs the visitors that only licence holders are allowed to watch…. We treated ourselves to the complete series 1-4 of Downton Abbey, we’re almost at the end now and then we’ll head North!
How ist Ollie? Is his tail still in a very bad condition and does he need an another opertaion? I sincerely hope not!

Thanks Dina. Unfortunately, poor Ollie’s tail is still not healing. If it is no better by the 9th, we have to decide to agree to amputation of just over one inch, so that a proper stump can be formed.
I hope you enjoy Meades documentary. He has an unusual, laconic style, which takes some getting used to, but he is very intelligent.

Hallo Ihr “Fabulous Four”,
mal wieder ein hochinteressanter Artikel und wunderbare Fotos! 🙂 Meine Erfahrungen mit dem Norden beschränken sich auf mehr oder weniger ausgedehnte Segeltörns in der “dänischen Südsee”. Weiter als bis zum Limfjord und Anholt bin ich dabei allerdings nie nach Norden vorgedrungen. Aber die guten Erfahrungen da waren mit einem leckeren Landesprodukt: Aquavit! 😉
Und mit dem deutschen Norden assoziiere ich immer ein “kühles Blondes”: Jever Pils! 😉

da freuen wir uns aber sehr und fühlen uns geehrt, von dir wieder einen Kommentar zu lesen.
Also, ich schrieb`s eben schon Susanne, zur Zeit ist es hier vom Wetter her ganz und gar nicht nördlich, wahrscheinlich eher wie bei dir in Süd-Texas (huch nach neuer dtsch. Rechtschreibung natürlich “Südtexas” – sieht aber blöd aus, finde ich und ist schwerer zu lesen): 15 Grad C und Sonnenschein heute und die Tiefsttemperatur gestern Nacht 11.8 Grad C.
Habe herzlichen Dank für den Link zu dem Norfolk-Blogger. Wir müssen zu unserer Schande gestehen, dass wir den nicht kannten bislang.
Und viel größeren Dank dir, dass du den Aquavit, das aqua vitae des Nordens, erwähnt hast. Masterchen hat den doch glatt vergessen, obwohl er meint “es geht nichts über einen tiefgekühlten Linie”. Und natürlich Jever Pils, das Dina liebt, aber unserem Masterchen nicht mundet, deswegen hat er es wohl verdrängt.
Weiterhin alles, alles Gute für euer slow moving. Das finde wir genial! Wir drücken gaaaaanz fest Daumen und Flügelchen, dass der Umzug weiterhin relaxed von der Bühne geht. Dabei fällt uns gerade ein, kennst du von Tom Robbins “Völker dieser Welt relaxed”. Ein verrückter, witziger Roman – Empfehlung vom Masterchen höchstpersönlich.

What a GREAT commentary which produced a huge smile on our faces. Pipi Longstockings (Langstrump) is, of course, VERY very important for the North. She is Siri’s and Selma’s heroine and we even had to buy them those stockings. Although we live in a house of stone it`s a bit like villa villekulla and we have pirates here as well.

Our house has flintstones walls on the outside, of course, those stones were brought here by the Trolls ages ago.

I tried to learn Finnish for one year and lived in Finnland for one year. In the end I could just ask the way and buy my bread and butter. Well, Finnish is really, really a hard language to learn. In former times I could say: minä puhu Suomena vain vähen (or something like this 😉 ). Now it`s all gone.
There is a guy in our village who is married to a Finnish lady. He has mastered your language pretty well. It seems to be learneable 😉

we have a german friend – living next to our cottage (5 km) – who’s speaking suomi fluently, even the dialect… after sixteen years in lapland!! so, don’t hang the head down 😉

I love the colour of those houses also. By co-incidence I have some furniture which is painted using a colour called ‘Ox Blood’ (and a soft dull purple), so you can imagine how much I like this colour.

Ox Blood produces such a warm atmosphere we like as you do. Ox Blood and a soft dull purple sounds interesting although it contradicts many colour theories. Most of them say that colours which are neighbours in the colour circle don`t combine in a harmonious way. We don`t aggree – and even contradict Goethe who influenced all other colour theories very much – especially Kandinsky and the Bauhaus. Oh dear, we better stop here.

it`s just a guess: Probably ox blood was a cheap pigment and available in rural areas. On the other hand you don’t find a lot of buildings in this colour on the European continent.

Today, I travelled from Vancouver to Calgary, landing in weather that is around minus 25 below zero. I haven’t felt this cold weather for several years – and it felt good. Living in the north is not for the faint of heart. I grew up in Northern Manitoba in a town that had no roads in or out. There was the 4 hour plane to Winnipeg and the 12 hour train ride to The Pas (about 200 miles south of where we lived). It was one of the most incredible childhoods full of adventure, even though the winters were extremely cold and long.
I am looking forward to your posts – they are a wonderful reminder that we live in a remarkable world. And I am especially interested in symbolism!

we love cold temperatures as well. Between minus 20 and minus 30 C the air is so clear and crisp. Masterchen once said when when had minus 29 C in Montreal: “it feels a bit like Champagne”. We envy you for your upbringing in Northern Manitoba. But how can you earn a living there, we are wondering. We have been once travelled with our Master to the James Bay (South end of the Hudson Bay). That has been our Farthest North on the American continent – it was … well, we can only say “mind blowing”.
Thank you so much for your kind compliments. Yes, indeed, our world is so remarkable and more so our time giving us this amazing opportunity to share and to be friends with you living in Vancouver, sooo far apart.

I grew up in a mining town when it was at its strongest. Alas, the fortunes of mining towns are rather fickle. The mine closed and most have moved away. Yet, there are still strong connections. And there is always a longing to go back, to see it as it was, to experience the time of growth. It goes back to your thoughts on memories. While I recognize that we must live in the present and look forward to some future point, I believe that our past has the greatest influence on today and serves as a guidepost as we move along…

I too, was interested in the ‘ox-blood’ colour. I didn’t know that historical fact, even seeing many ‘red’ buildings in Sweden. The north has a special place in my heart for time spent there (Sweden and Canada) but must admit I am not missing the cold now, being in the tropics. I have always been intersted in the stories of the north… and trolls are a special favourite. The photos are spectacular. Thanks Fabulous Four.

Dear Coral,
what a similarity: our dear Master lived in Sweden and Canada as well. He really felt at home in both countries where he had a great time. But as we just answered Clanmother Rebecca, he and we all love the cold. We had lived in Greece, Nepal and India before but that was not our world, just too hot. After half a year in India we started to dream of snow and ice. Maybe that`s because we have Viking blood 😉
When we went to the tropics we had the feeling there is too much of everything. The North is much more ascetic and clear. Or what do you think?

yes, we read “Farthest North” which, we think, is very well written. Masterchen blogged about it on his old blog, the post is called “Farthest North”. Sigmund Freud read “Farthest North” to his daughter as good night stories as well as Thomas Mann.
Actually this was the big difference between Nansen and his student Amundsen: Nansen could write, Amundsen couldn`t (he had somebody writing for him).

It`s amazing when you drive through any Scandinavian landscape you get this feeling after a while that there has been one colour only in former times: ox blood.
The colour of New York is yellow, the colour of France is blue – especially Paris – and the colour of Berlin is green as the colour of Scandinavia is red. There was a photographer who made that obvious some years ago with his pictures of Berlin, New York, France – but he left out the North – because that’s our beloved Dina`s task.

Within the fields of symbolism I specialized on colours and wrote several books about colour theory and colour in symbolism. I find this very interesting which colours different cultures prefer to others. For the North it`s ox blood which is a warm colour and one could comtemplate if these colours preferences are always complementary in the Jungian sense. You can see this in the Islamic world as well. There the favourite colour is green (green was the most liked colour by Mohammed) but in the desert there is hardly any green.

das ist doch ein wunderbarer Einstieg für euren neuen Blog und natürlich trefft ihr mit den Geschichten um den Norden herum absolut meinen Geschmack. Auch ich liebe nichts mehr, als den Norden, vielleicht, aber nur vielleicht könnte die Bretagne noch ein Ort sein, den ich genauso schätzen würde, mal schauen!
Die Liebe für das norwegische Rot, einst Ochsenblut, teilen wir ebenfalls, dazu die weißen Fensterrahmen oder auch oft dieses ganz bestimmte Blau, was wohl taubenblau heißt und so wunderbar mit weiß und nachtblau korrespondiert, plus eben diesem rot …
auf das Symbolelexikon freue ich mich …

Guten Abend, liebe Ulli,
auch hier ist es frühlingshaft. Heute erreichten wir 15 Grad C und die kälteste Nacht in den letzten Tagen war 12 Grad C warm. Gar nichts Nördliches.
Du schreibst über die Bretagne, die ja auch mal altes englisches Herrschaftsgebiet war. Wir empfanden die Bretagne auch nördlich von ihrer Stimmung, das eher karge, die Vorherrschaft des Meeres und dann die beiden parallelen wunderfeinen Orte Mont St. Michel in der Bretagne und gegenüber St. Micheal`s Mount in Cornwall. Nebenbemerkung: Als Raucher liebt Masterchen sowieso die Bretagne, da von Quimper die besten Zigarettenbättchen kommen.

ich habe gerade zwei Krimis von Jean-Luc Bannalec gelesen, ein Pseudonym eines Deutschen, der in der Bretagne lebt. Seine Stories spielen in der Gegend zwischen Quimper und Lorient, exakt dem Teil der Bretagne, der mich schon immer besonders zog. Neben einem guten Plot beschreibt er Mentalität und Landschaft, nicht zu vergessen die kulinarischen Spezialitäten und wo man den besten Kaffee trinken kann, denn Kommissar Dupin ist Kaffeejunkie … 😉

Oh dear, Sally, yesterday night brought my village Cley next the Sea into the headlines of the international news. At about 18:30h an US Army helicopter crash on our beach and we are high security area now rules by the US Army. Nobody was hurt in village as it crashed on beach at the birdreserve but 4 American soldiers died. So the journalists outnumber the villagers now but Dina and me got as near as possible to the accident side with the chief warden of the reserve. We are just back and we will blog about it today in evening.

Genau an dieser Stelle (NO GO Area!!) habe ich vor Weihnachten Fotos gemacht, ein paar davon zeigen wir heute in “Cley Crash”. Wir hatten keine Ahnung wie gefährlich es war, es sah doch so friedlich aus…
Wir sind jetzt ein wenig ko und werden gleich in die Sauna gehen.

klar, Herr K., der Psychologe, hat eifrig seinen Freud und Jung studiert. Bei einer Beziehung treten stets vier Systeme in Beziehung. Jeder hat doch seinen Vogel, ohne den er zum völligen Langweiler würde. Hat nicht auch Emma Jung irgendwo geschrieben, dass stets die Anima und der Animus des Mannes mit dem Animus der Frau und deren Anima eine Beziehung eingeht. Ganz schön schwierig, nicht?!, diese holde Kunst der innigen Verbindung. Aber, liebe Pia, bin ich womöglich der projezierte Animus von Siri und Selma die projezierte Amina von Dina? Wer weiß … Daraus ließe sich eine feine Geschichte um die Identität a la Jekyll und Hide – nur noch komplexer – spinnen oder eine Keuner-Geschichte a la Brecht, die er auch mit “Herr K.” begann. Das, denke ich mir, könnte man auch tanzen. Ich hatte oft das Gefühl bei Pina Bausch Aufführungen, dass sie dieses verdeutlichen wollte.

die Kartenausrichtung ist noch gar nicht so lange genormt. Die Walfänger des 17. Jh. bis ins 18. Jh. hinein hatten ihre (geheimen) Karten fast immer auf ihren Heimathafen ausgerichtet. Daneben gab es die Ostausrichtung, die dann von der einheitlichen Nordausrichtung abgelöst wurde. Diese Nordausrichtung hängt damit zusammen, dass der Kompass auf magnetisch Nord zeigt (und mit leichter Korrektur auf geographisch Nord eingestellt werden kann).

du hast völlig recht, dieses “ex oriente lux”, mit dem die Ostausrichtung der Karten gerechtfertigt wurde, bezieht sich auf beides zugleich, den Sonnenaufgang und Jerusalem. Die Nordausrichtung bezieht sich auf Stella Polaris, den Fixpunkt auf der Nordhalbkugel, um sich alles dreht (das Äquivalent ist das Kreuz des Südens auf der Südhalbkugel).

what a great idea “Dorian Gray in landscape version”. Of course, beauty is subjective – to certain extend. I, as a “nordic” man, love the beauty of Scandivian women: blond, blue eyed, and rather thin but tall, cool. Well, this problem of “too beautiful”, I suppose, I have to think about a bit longer. Too beautiful … Dorian Gray was a narcisst loving himself in his own product. Could we say: The North is beautiful and loves itself so much that it is enough – it doesn’t need the admirers?
As I said before, I was risen in Sweden and made my first “real” sexual experiences there. It was easy, unproblematic, just fun. This coins my reaction to the North and nordic women, I suppose. On the other hand, Dorian Gray is decadent but the North rather ascetic and clear …
Dear Francesca, thanks for inspiring me to think about “too beautiful”. I think of Boticelli`s Venus as too beautiful (oh dear, quite mainstream – well, as you know, men are simple 😉 )

Interesting, and beautiful. I’ve always been attracted to northern landscapes, despite the fact that in literature the north so often symbolizes death and loneliness (I’m thinking of Frankenstein and Giants of the Earth). I grew up in Minnesota, where it’s often colder in winter than it is in Fairbanks, Alaska, so I’m well-acquainted with cold and snow.
I’ve never thought about why it is, that while other people daydream of traveling to the Caribbean, I daydream of taking a train north to Hudson Bay (Canada) or a boat to Newfoundland. This bears some exploration. Perhaps it has to do with a longing to see, again, people I dearly love who are dead? Not too long ago I had a dream that my grandmother was living in an ice/glass house in the far north… it was very strange, and strangely comforting.
I don’t find death or solitude terrifying — to me they both are agents of spiritual transformation, therefore the north probably represents transformation to me (and literally, also, in that water is transformed from liquid to solid). Ah, there’s an interesting notion–a place in which something slippery and hard to hold becomes solidified.

the cruelty of beauty that really is an interesting topic! If I remember it correctly Umberto Eco in his “History of Beauty” doesn`t mention it. But, sorry, I have to contemplate it a bit longer. There are obviously two aspects: 1. a cruelty against others (comparison), 2. a cruelty against yourself (isolation).
Death and lonelyness are associated with the North. Lonelyness or better to be on your own far away from the crowds is a luxury nowadays, isn`t it? Surrounded by all this amazing nature, which doesn`t care about you, may produce the association of death. Isn`t it ideal for transformation to be on your own in the nature?

Beautiful post as always, with so many interesting notions to learn. Just to give a couple of examples, I had no idea about the origins of the word “orientation” nor did I know that the Scandinavian red (which I also adore and is so well captured by Dina’s beautiful images) used to be ox blood!
Congratulations to Dina on her great images illustrating the post – I meant to ask her how she had adapted to the D800: is she still happy with it? Judging by her work I would say very well but I would love to hear any comment/update she may have! 🙂
