      Aber wir sind ja auch nicht am Strand, sondern bloggen gerade 😉 Es ist schon eigenartig, ich lebe so nahe am Strand, aber gehe längst nicht jeden Tag dorthin. Irgendwie genügt es mir bisweilen zu wissen, dass der Strand vor meiner Haustüre liegt.

    Here our beaches are of sand, which must be about a squillion times more comfortable to lie on.
    Mind you, other than that, it’s a most glorious photo!

    • Well, we have vast sandy beaches here as well, but there is a big advantage to go up to the shingle bank, it`s always dry there and, of course, warmer. It isn`t so uncomfy as it looks. And another reason, why we don`t ly down on our sandy beaches: after a while you have got fine sand all over you. Our Bookfayries cannot stand this.
      You see, there are many reasons to relaxe on the shingle bank.

    • oft nimmt man das in nächster Nähe als selbstverständlich, einfach gewohnt und vertraut. Ich lebe hier am Rande der Petite Camarque und “vergesse” doch manchmal wie idyllisch es hier ist und wie ruhig 🙂

    plenty people think peace is a destination in much the same way to eventually arrive at happiness or success.
    well, i think peace is always available…it’s not easy to choose peace when we’re going through tough times. we go through periods when we get caught up in worries and stress. but there are countless things we can do to create peace of mind – both in response to events in our lives, and proactively, everyday: dance to your favorite song, focusing solely on the music and the movement. get into your body and get out of your head! a long walk at the seaside, focusing on the feel of the sand between the toes and the sound of the crashing waves or a bike ride in a scenic part of town, immersing yourself in the calm of your environment, really wow!

      thank you very much for your elaborate comment 🙂
      On one hand you are right: peace is everywhere because peace comes from within. It’s there where a peaceful person is.
      On the other hand you mention meditation, jacobson, AT etc. Of course, this creates a peaceful mind BUT it`s always action, it has to do with doing. I practised yoga and meditation for nearly 30 years until I found out that this is very much like everything I do – it`s doing. May I ask you: Who are you when you are not doing?
      For me the point of tranquility has to do with giving up will power and doing. And I suppose there a special places which help to reach this surrendering. In the spiritual tradition people were always seeking for this special geographical spot. I think this point of tranquility is something individual. Traditionally it was the desert or a special mountain, in the celtic tradition it were wells, and the old Germanic tribes searched for special trees (like Buddha Gautama). The Christians go to churches.
      I don`t know if I should believe that there is a special energy or a certain radition at certain places as it is said of the pyramids, of the cathedrals of Chartre and Compostella, and certain stone circles. Probably it matters really much what we project onto this geographical point. In modern therapy you speak of anchoring.
      But back down to earth: this spot on the shingle bank of our coast in front of our dorstep is our place of letting go. And I am sure you have your personal place as well.

      Yeah, we love our place! Funnily enough we see it as “our place”. We are cross when other people are sitting there (what hardly ever happens as the tourists tend to go down a few steps to the sandy beaches).

      Also wenn es einen Regenbogen gibt, ist er das… dann geht “die Seele fliegen”. Der Regenbogen ist für mich eine der schönsten Naturerscheinungen.

      mir geht’s wie dir, ich finde meine Ruhepole ebenfalls in der Natur.
      Heute war’s toll mit Regenbogenerscheinungen: Im Süden war der Himmel finster schwarz und im Norden über dem Meer schien die Sonne vom feinsten. An der Grenze zwischen hell und dunkel gab’s dann, fast wie in der Hoch-Arktis, Regenbogenerscheinungen – wunderschön 🙂

  37. Wir haben solche wunderschönen Steine mitgehen lassen…..die Szene, als diese eiskalte Frau am Ryanair-Schalter uns umpacken ließ wg. 300g, vergesse ich nicht….
    Einmal sind wir zum Strand mit dem Auto gefahren, der “Baywatcher”, der die Parkgebühr kassierte, meinte: But we don´t have sand here….
    Diese Steine sind so unglaublich und nach 2-3 Stunden am Strand, kommt ja auch Sand! Und die Seehunde!
    Naja, einfach dort zu liegen ist auch schön!
    Allerdings, nie habe ich gesehen, dass einer der Angler einen Fisch herausgezogen hätte…..
    Ich freue mich, wenn ich irgendwann einmal wieder nach Cley reisen darf, danke, so schöne Erinnerungen….Kurzurlaub!

      ja, zuerst einmal zu Ryanair: Wie viele andere hier habe auch ich beschlossen, dass ich mir diese unwürdige Behandlung von Ryanair nicht mehr gefallen lasse. Dazu kommt ja noch, dass mit all den Zusatzgebühren und dem Flugplätzen am Ende der Welt Ryanair meist teurer ist als wenn ich mit z.B. KLM fliege.
      Aber, liebe Pia, manches Mal holen die Angler so viel Fische aus dem Meer, dass ich schon öfters welche geschenkt bekam. Das hängt mit den Gezeitenströmen und der Jahreszeit zusammen. Ich hatte einmal B&B-Gäste aus Frankfurt/Oder, deren Hobby das Angeln war. Die waren ein Segen, 4 Wochen lang gab’s tgl. frischen Fisch.
      Klar, du darfst gerne mit oder ohne Kinder wieder kommen. Die Seehunde haben euch bereits vermisst. Sie haben gerade Unmengen von Jungen, die fast weiß sind – so süß. Das sind Siris und Selmas Freunde.

    • Yes, we go there quite often because this spot is just a quarter of an hour walking distance from our dorstep. Quite some folks from our village go there every evening and just sit there looking at the sea. The sea takes all sorrows, it’s so calming.

      In den Reusen werden Hummer und Krebse gefangen, das ist die Spezialität dieser Küste. Ende des 19. und Anfang des 20. Jh. haben sich die Bediensteten der großen Häuser Nord-Norfolks beschwert, dass es immer nur Krebs und Hummer zu essen gab. Heute ist das Luxusspeise.

      thanks a lot to quote John Masefield, I have to admid I didn`t hear of him before. And, of course, I look up all the authors being quoted I don`t know. I find it amazing that he lived for years on a ship and so this quote is even more understandable.

      You must have a huge collection of quotes, haven`t you? I like quotes build in in literature like in the bril novels by Eco and Auster f.e. finding the intertextual relationship quite thrilling. One could say everything is already said in a striking way. On the other hand in some blogs one gets the feeling the quote is a way not to think but let the thinking be done by others.
      “Quotes” – wouldn`t this be a topic for an article? And wouldn`t you the right person to write it?
      I think you are. May I ask you if you would like to write a guest post on our blog here about quotes?

    • Good afternoon, dear Rebecca,

      you made the point: A quote has to inspire and to get integrated in our way of thinking. As Newton already said: We are standing on the shoulders of others. We become aware that we are historically connected.
      But there is a danger that people use quotes whithout looking at the context of these words. Especially philosophers like Nietzsche are often quoted in a way which contradicts their writing. I suppose the net makes it too easy to find quotes without any information about the author and the text from which it is taken.
      It’s fine to quote some words we have found in the books we are reading but quoting an author we don’t know and from a text we never read is dodgy, isn’t it?

      What do you think, shall we write an article about quotes and quoting together and publish it on both our blogs?

  67. Liebe Dina, lieber Klausbernd,
    ja, so einen Ruhepol kann man immer gebrauchen. Die Küste, wo man am Strand dann das Rauschen der Brandung hören kann, mögen wir auch sehr. Allerdings: hier – bei unserer südlichen Lage und der Sonneneinstrahlung – müssen wir immer im Schatten sitzen. Macht uns aber nichts. Ganz so leer wie bei Euch ist der Strand hier zwar nicht, aber dennoch ist es weit weniger voll als z.B. in Deutschland. Man muss nur ein ganz klein wenig am Strand entlang fahren. Von unserem neuen Domizil aus wird es zwar ein wenig weiter [ca. 120 Meilen = 2 1/2 Stunden weiter] sein, und daher nichts mehr für einen Tagesausflug wie von hier in Karnes City möglich, aber wir werden dennoch häufiger an die Küste fahren wollen.
    Und ansonsten werden wir ja einen Ruhepol in Fredericksburg haben. So einfach auf der Terasse sitzen und den Rehen zuschauen. Oder, wenn es einmal (kräftig) geregnet hat, am Bach am Ende unseres Grundstücks sitzen und em Wasser zusehen und zuhören. Klappt aber leider nur nach einem guten Regen, denn es ist ein sog. “wet weather creek”. Der führt eben nicht dauerhaft Wasser. Aber wir hoffen drauf.

      mir geht’s wie dir, lieber Pit, der tollste Ruhepol ist neben dem Strand mein Garten. Allerdings ich erblasse ja vor Neid 😉 einen kleinen Bach, der zumindest bisweilen Wasser führt, auf dem Grundstück zu haben, finde ich gaaaaanz toll
      Ja, die beiden Flatterwesen werden wohl, wie ich es mitbekam, aber nur am Rande, weil sehr geheim tun, über Langsamkeit schreiben. Ja, da hat sich wohl der Bock zum Gärtner gemacht. Sie werden wohl, wie ich sie tuscheln hörte, darüber u.a. schreiben, wie sie gelernt haben, die Langsamkeit zu genießen. Ich bin ja gespannt.
