The old part of Dina’s hometown is one of the top ten most scenic and popular spots in Norway. The Huffington post recently voted Norway as the best place on earth and Gamlebyen was the fifth reason for this decision. Not bad! But what makes Gamlebyen so special?

Der alte Teil von Dinas Heimatstadt gehört zu den ersten zehn schönsten und beliebtesten Stellen in Norwegen. Nach einer Umfrage der Zeitung Huffington Post ist Norwegen der weltbeste Wohnort, und die Altstadt von Fredrikstad war der fünft wichtigste Grund für diese Wahl. Nicht schlecht! Aber was macht diese Altstadt so besonders?

Fredrikstad Fortress, also known as the Old Town (Gamlebyen), is one of the best preserved fortified cities of Northern Europe, and a lively urban community complete with shops, housing, business and industry and a flourishing cultural scene. We love to visit the market on a Saturday morning,  the open-air restaurants, galleries and workshops.

Das Fort von Fredrikstad, auch Gamlebyen (Altstadt) genannt, ist eine der besterhaltenen befestigten Städte Nordeuropas. Sie besteht aus einer lebendigen Gemeinschaft, weist Geschäften, Wohnvierteln und Industrie auf, und vor allem eine reichhaltige kulturelle Szene. Wir liebes es die Märkte, Restaurants und Straßencafes, Galerien und Werkstätten zu besuchen.

Fredrikstad is one of three cities in Norway which have been surrounded by fortifications, and the only one where the fortifications are still intact. Fredrikstad Fortress was constructed according to the old Dutch system with wide moats filled with water and deep earthworks. Towards the land side the fortress sports three whole and two half bastions, projecting diamond-shaped points to hold defensive cannons. The ravelins are in the moats and outside the main fortifications there are outlying fortifications such as Kongsten Fort. Towards the river the fortifications consist of a solid granite wall which is reinforced with earthen ramparts. Entrance to the fortress was via the drawbridge and through the wall gate, or via one of the gates facing the wharfs on the river Glomma.

Fredrikstad ist eine der drei Städte Norwegens, die von einer Wehranlage umschlossen sind, und nicht nur das, die Wehranlage ist immer noch gut erhalten. Das Fort von Fredrikstad wurde nach dem alten niederländischen System mit breiten Wassergräben und hohen Erdwällen angelegt. Zur Landseite befinden sich an dieser Befestigung drei vollständige Bollwerke und ein halbes, die Unterstände in Form von Diamanten aufweisen, auf denen Kanonen standen. Die Brückenköpfe, dreieckige Außenwerke, die die Bastionen schützen, befinden sich im Wassergraben und außerhalb der Hauptbefestigung gibt es dazu noch vorgelagerte Forts wie Kongsten Fort. Auf der Flussseite weist die Befestigung Mauern aus Granit auf, die mit Erdwällen verstärkt werden. In das Fort kommt man über eine Zugbrücke und durch ein Tor im Befestigungswall oder über Tore, an den Kais zu Fluss Glomma.

  3. What a great-looking place! I love the old fortress, the aerial shot shows it off so well. Who were they defending against, I wonder?
    It looks lovely in those ‘good weather’ photos, and no doubt just as picturesque when covered in snow.

Unfortunately, we have to leave Klausbernd behind in Cley, he has to take care of the house and the garden all by himself. I’m still in Cley, by the way, – the aviation strike in Germany hit my flight schedule and I’m now on an prolonged holiday in Norfolk. Not the worst place to be forced to stay… 🙂

  6. The buildings are almost too perfect, as though they were not lived in or held businesses. Everything is so clean and precisely laid out – amazing place indeed! I suppose WWII did not injure the town (or has it been repaired?) Dina, whatever possessed you to leave there? Bookfayries – remind Klausbernd to pack the camera!

    • That’s right, GPCox, Gamlebyen was not injured during the WWII. Every building in Gamlebyen is a listed building and they are all used for working and living, it’s a very bohemian lifestyle.
      Why I left? If you don’t leave your country because of work, I suppose the next best reason is because of love, so it was in my case, anyway. 😉
      The Bookfayries and myself are very much into family things the coming month in Norway so we have decided to leave Klausbernd behind to look after house and garden in Cley. 😦 He’ll join us next time again, hopefully we can make it to Svalbard then. Hope everything is fine with you and yours in sunny Florida!

    Men, fotball lagets moderne historie er en liten katastrofe… Det årnær sæ IKKE i Fredriksta’….

  16. How beautiful. Thank you for introducing me to a part of Norway I know nothing about. I would enjoy wandering around the old town and across those bridges. Superb photos as usual Dina. Oh, and I think Siri and Selma should have some daffodil yellow dresses for their visit. It is a very yellow, sunny, happy place and May will be a lovely month to visit – almond blossom time 😀

    • That’s a good idea, Jude! The girls are fussy about their clothing, sigh. Being in Norfolk they prefer the shabby chick Norfolk look with boots to colorful dresses. When it’s too muddy and Klausbernd and myself are wearing wellies, they just fly above us or rest on our shoulders. Right now Selma, Siri and myself are very busy preparing our national costumes for the 17th of May. Norway is celebrating the 200th birthday and we’re invited to the big national party. 🙂

    • Haha… girls eh! I was fortunate to celebrate the 17th May – 41 years ago! 17th May 1973 in Bergen. I didn’t wear national costume, though I had to wear it in my job, working in Stalheim Hotel for 6 months. I had a fab time and remember it well. 🙂

  22. It is very easy to see why Dina’s birthplace is so popular – it is so very, very beautiful ! I should have given my back teeth to visit Scandinavia – including Norway, of course ! – but we had to travel in the off-season, and it was too cold. Tant pis pour nous. Chic never saw it, and I never shall.
    Nevertheless, I shall very much enjoy seeing Dina’s photos, upon her return to blogging …

    • I suppose you mean Isegran Fort. It’s a very fine and popular place!
      We love to visit the beautiful island situated in the river between the Old Town and Kråkerøy. Isegran is the perfect place for food, culture and recreation.
      In “Minemagasinet” there are maritime exhibits during the summer season. Café Galleien offers great homemade food, entertainment, accommodation and beautiful views of the Old Town and Vaterland in the south. The island also houses a maritime center for construction and renovation of old wooden boats.
      In the beautiful Renaissance Garden on Isegran there are historically correct perennials, herbs and medicinal plants from 1700’s records.

      Isegran is the first place in Fredrikstad mentioned in history. The Earl of Borgarsyssel, Alv Erlingsson, also called MindreAlv, had a small fortress on Isegran in the late 1200s. In the 1670s, the island was fortified with a large battery platform, Isegran tower, and later a small fort was built to protect the river. Until 1685 Isegran was the royal shipyard for the danish-norwegian fleet and during the Great Northern War, the island was the naval base for Peter Wessel Tordenskiold.
      The historic island can be reached via the Kråkerøy bridge or with the city ferry.

      This coming July “Tall Ship races” will take place in Fredrikstad and many ships will moor along Isegran, watch out for it! 🙂

    • We love beautiful Sweden, Ann Christine. The Bookfayries love to take the ferry from Fredrikstad to Strömstad in Sweden on a sunny summer day. To sit on deck an enjoy the skjærgård is the number one thing on our to do list. The ferry starts just opposite Gamlebyen as you can see on the aerial photo.

  31. En fantastisk perle – Frederikstad – som jeg desværre ikke selv har oplevet – endnu! Men som du måske ved arbejder jeg i “Den Gamle By”, Danmarks Bymuseum ( http://www.dengamleby.dk/ ) – og er født og opvokset i Danmarks ældste by, Ribe ( https://www.google.dk/search?q=ribe&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=8gNAU_D6KeO9ygPYwoHIBw&ved=0CHAQsAQ&biw=1440&bih=744 ) – derfor var det spændende at se og høre om denne by i Norge!

  41. I can see a few of my blogger friends, like me have been to Fredrikstad. I have visited twice, almost three times, and each time I am adamant I will return to the old time. It is a fascinating place, more lively in summer, but equally interesting from a historic and scenic point of view in winter. So well preserved, gorgeous cafes and shops to wander in. A visit to Fredrikstad has been instrumental in my life: leading to my discovery of Rosemaling and the master rosemaler who would be my mentor and also to my son becoming a Norwegian exchange student and guess where his host family lived: just outside Fredrikstad!! The comments here are testament to the town’s appeal. Really loved seeing your photos of the sights I know so well from often pouring over the photos I took there. ( and seeing that you have done a better job than me in photographing this gem).

    wunderbare Bilder! Dieses Posting macht richtig Lust auf Norwegen im Allgemeinen und Frederikstad im Besonderen. VIelleich tschaffen es Mary und ich ja auch noch einmal da hin. Für Ende Juli/Anfang August bietet Mary’s frühere Universität [UT @ Austin] für Ehemalige [“Texas Exes”] übrigens eine Norwegenreise an.     Sieht doch gut aus, oder? Aber in diesem Jahr wird für uns daraus nichts werden. Vielleicht ein anderes Mal. Was uns an den Reisen für die “Texas Exes” [wir waren damit ja im vergangenen Jahr auf Mosel, Rhein und Mein unterwegs] ist, dass sie etwas viel ins Tagesprogramm packen. Aber es ist schon gut organisiert. Aber wenn wir mal “Norwegen machen”, dann könnten wir ja vielleicht auf eine ganz persönliche Reisewführerin hoffen. 😉

      heute Vormittag schrieb ich bereits eine ausführliche Antwort auf deinen lieben Kommentar und als ich zum Abschluss einen Emoji von Siri und Selma hinzufügen war alles fort – wie auch meine Zeit. Jetzt bin ich wieder da, entschuldige bitte die verspätete Reaktion.
      Die Norwegenreise sieht gut aus, ist aber heftig teuer! Besser fahren wir irgendwann gemeinsam dorthin, der Gedanke gefällt uns alle vier sehr! Ja, wie du merkst, ich bin immer noch in Cley, der Urlaub war eigentlich am 2.4 zu Ende aber Lufthansa streikte und ich bekam “Zwangsurlaub”. Cley ist nicht der schlechteste Ort zu verweilen.. 😉
      Habt ihr euch gut im neuen Heim eingelebt? Wir freuen uns sehr über deinen neuen Blog, den ich gleich besuchen werde. Bis jetzt hatte ich sehr viel zu regeln, aber endlich ist alles klar für den Rückflug am kommenden Donnerstag.

      danke für Deine Mühen, Deine Antwort auf meinen Kommentar zwei Mal zu schreiben. Es ist wirklich Mist, wenn etwas einmal Geschriebenes so einfach auf Knopfdruck verschwindet. Wenn ich etwas hasse, dann das. Da hat man sich Mühe gegeben, etwas zu schreiben, und dann ist es plötzlich im elektronischen Nirvana. Auch wenn man sich natürlich die Mühe machen kann, es neu zu schreiben, so finde/fand ich es immer unbefriedigend, weil ich nie mehr genau dasselbe schreiben kann/konnte. Also: Du brauchst Dich wirklich nicht zu entschuldigen, wenn Du etas länger für die Antwort gebraucht hast. Bloß nicht hetzen (lassen). Das habe ich mir auch für meine neues Blog vorgenommen.
      Zur Norwegenreise: die Reisen mit den Texas Exes sind wirklich nicht billig. Und was ich daran, nach meiner Erfahrung im vergangenen Jahr mit der Flussreise in Deutschland, weniger mag ist das zu gefüllte Programm. Für manche Exkursionen mussten wir vor 7 aufstehen, damit wir vor der Abfahrt der Busse noch frühstücken konnten. Das ist nichts für mich Morgenmuffel. 😉 Außerdem war viel zu wenig Zeit für eigenständige Besichtigungen/Stadrundgänge. Also machen wir doch lieber unser ganz eigenes Reiseprogramm. Und für Norwegen könnte es ja irgendwann einmal zusammen mit den Fabulous Four klappen. Das wäre riesig!
      Zum “Zwangsurlaub” in Cley: hätte ich nie gedacht, dass ein Pilotenstreik auch etwas Gutes haben kann!
      Zum Umzug: dauerhaft whnen wir immer nch nicht in Fritztown. Das wird kommen, wenn wir nach dem 26. April aud Boston zurück sind und auch unsere Katzen umziehen. Aber wir verbringen immer mehr Zeit da. Und genießen das neue Haus und den Garten. Und das Radeln – ich jedenfalls. Mary muss damit noch anfangen. Sie ist noch mehr beim Walking. Gestern habe ich mir übrigens ein weiteres Rad zugelegt. Besser für Hügel und Berge geeignet. Und auch für rauheren Untergrund. Muss ich demnächst einmal im Blog vorstellen. Wie auch neue Fotos vom Haus – außen und innen.
      So, jetzt mache ich einmal Schluss und frühstücke.

Long ago I visited Norway when I was a student abroad and it was one of my favorite places ever. The people were so welcoming and everyone just seemed so happy. I hope one day to return to see more of your beautiful country.

      By the way, we have decided to head for Scotland already in August instead of beginning of Sept. We plan to leave on the 20th to go to Holy Island, Lindisfarne for two days and then maybe walk a part of the John Muir Trail towards Edinburgh.

    • Hi Dina, My last visit was over an year ago. Short business trip to Oslo. Before that I have only been in the Lofoten Islands and Tromsø. I would love go to Stavanger and Preikestolen and drive along the coastline towards north. From your pictures I can see there are loads of pretty places to visit.

  48. Wie wunderschön. Da werden Erinnerungen wach. ich war auch sehr beeindruckt von der Altstadt in Fredrikstad. Ich war zwar nur einmal dort (1998), aber ich habe es in sehr guter Erinnerung. Nicht nur, weil ich auf einem dortigen Flohmarkt mehrere gute CDs gekauft habe. 😉

    • Jetzt bin ich fast sprachlos! 🙂 1998 im Sommer war ich viele Wochen zu Hause… Ich besuche “Frimarkedet” jeden Samstag wenn ich in Fredrikstad bin, die Stimmung dort ist toll, unbeschwert, fröhlich, sommerlich und heiter.

      wir wünschen dir einen wunderschönen Urlaub. Ich las gerade bei Roland Barthes in “mythologies”, dass der bezahlte Urlaub als Teil der Proletarisierung der Welt anzusehen sei. Er, so Barthes, ist die Singularität im Arbeitsleben in dem Sinn, dass man nicht im Urlaub arbeitet. Schriftsteller, und ich würde hinzusetzen Blogger wie du, arbeiten im Urlaub und gehören damit zur Elite, so Barthes, da sie stets für den Kuss der Muse offen sind. Vielleicht tröstet dich diese kühne Ansicht ja 😉

    • Lieber Klausbernd, den proletarischen Luxus eines bezahlten Urlaubs habe ich vor sechs Jahren aufgegeben. 🙂 In unserer neuen multimedialen Welt verschwimmen die Grenzen zwischen Arbeit und Freizeit immer mehr.       We thought about you today! 🙂 We went to Edgefield nurseries for the third time getting a load full of St.John’s Worth and took a different road home, through the countryside, visiting Edgefield church, heading towards Holt on country lanes we had never seen before and suddenly, turning right because we wanted to avoid the ford towards Hunworth, there was a little hidden car park and big map of various walking routes. We bet you have been there! 🙂

    • You are right – there is an online version of the magazine with selected articles from the past but the online version of the actual monthly mazine is only available to subsribers. I’ll keep an eye on it in case they decide to include my feature online at some time in the future.

      You know, I don’t think that I have ever walked in the Hunworth area. From what you tell me, maybe I should?

      I’m currenty exercising both back and brain – planting potatoes at allotment and writing a magazine feature about Republika Srpska (Bosnia).

      next time you are here we can try some walks in the Edgefield-Hunworth area.
      My potatoes are already in but we were busy planting shrubs in front of my big hedge. But tonight we will have a big meal with friends because tomorrow Dina will fly back home. We were so lucky having a perfect early summer’s day at Cley beach.

  54. Looks like such a beautiful place to visit!
    I really want to visit Norway someday, but I think it’s going to be a very expensive trip because everytime I see pictures like these of different places I decide I have to add that to my list!

      da Dina gerade emsig packt, da sie Morgen nach Deutschland fliegt, beantworte ich eben deine Frage: Dina ist zwar in Fredrikstad aber nicht in Gamlebyen aufgewachsen. Ihr Elternhaus ist auf dem Bild nicht zu sehen. Und neben Dina hat noch eine andere berühmte Person dort gelebt, Roald Amundsen, dessen Haus auch nicht auf dem Bild zu sehen ist.

    • You can make collages with a lot of different programs. on this post I used picasa and pic monkey. On the next post, however (Crab fishing in Norfolk) it’s not a collage in the middle, but a gallery. This is from WordPress and I would recommend you try this gallery feature: the advantage. you can click on each photo and it blows up bigger!

      I know Tromsö from the stop over flying to Longyearbyen/Svalbard. Today there are direct flights Oslo – Longyearbyen. Tromsö is the gate to the High Arctic for me. How many expeditions went from there far North …
      The Monday was sunny at mine in Norfolk, at Dina’s – in Bonn – it was changeable, even with hail showers.

      the Fredrikstad fortress was built from 1663 to 1666. In those times all the middle European fortresses followed a similar plan. This one here was designed by a Norwegian-Danish architect.

Just Amazing, thank you so much for all the beautiful pictures of Norway, or at least this part of Norway, the buildings and landscape is so colorful and beautiful, I know that will never get to this country. However it comes alive through you eyes and camera for me to see and learn more of! Thank you for such great writing and photography, Dina!       Norway is great! Dina is Norwegian and we all visite Norway quite often. We suppose one has to know an area really well to be able to take good photos. The very north of Scotland, we just visited, radiates partly a feeling of Norway.
