Klausbernd: For me summer is blue, the blue sky, the blue sea, boating and falling into the water 😉 Of course blue is a cold colour telling you ‘keep cool! Never get heated up.’ And therefore we write in blue here …

Klausbernd: Sommer ist für mich blau. Klar, auch “blau machen” 😉 Aber eigentlich meine ich Bootfahren. Umgeben vom blauen Wasser und unterm blauen Himmel der Hitze entkommen,  manchmal ins Wasser fallen – platsch. Aber Entschuldigung, Blau ist doch eine kalte Farbe, also immer fein cool bleiben, nicht zu hitzig werden!

Dina: Summer is for me this special blue light of the nordic nights at the islands and the blue cross on our Norwegian flag. Does it stand for water?  Some say it is the royal blue like in the French tricolour. And then summer is red. Like the red houses and summerhouses in Norway. If I move away from Norway, the colours change, they turn into a dreamy romantic something. You know I have NEVER been to Cornwall … alright, I’m not going start this discussion again 😉  … But IF we should go to Cornwall, just in case, wouldn’t it be like a dream to go in a pink and mint VW camper van? The girls and myself would wear romantic summer dresses to match our van, I’d love that!

Dina: Sommer ist für mich das besondere blaue Licht der nordischen lauen Nächte in den Schären und das blaue Kreuz in unserer norwegischen Fahne – ob das wohl für das Wasser steht? Manche sagen, es sei das königliche Blau wie auch in der französischen Trikolore. Und natürlich ist Sommer rot, wie die roten Häuser und Scheunen in Norwegen. Jedesmal wenn ich Norwegen verlasse, ändern sich die Farben. – Du weißt ja, ich war noch NIE in Cornwall, okay, ich fang nicht damit wieder an. 😉 Aber wenn wir nach Cornwall fahren, müssen wir das unbedingt in so einem zweifarbig pink-mint gespritzten VW Bus machen. Wir versprechen dir, die lieben Kleinfeinfeen und ich werden dann romantische Sommerkleidchen passend zum Campingbus tragen.

Siri: Summer is gay for me, many coloured, motley. I like this quote of Walter Gropius: ‘My favorite colour is colourful’. And so I say the colours of summer are many colours, colourful they are.

Siri: Sommer ist für mich bunt, ganz kunterbunt. Mir gefällt der vielzitierte Ausspruch von Walter Gropius: “Meine Lieblingsfarbe ist bunt”. Und so würde ich sagen, die Sommerfarben sind bunt, eben kunterbunt.

Selma: indeed they are the Pippi Longstocking’s colours – you know Astrid Lindgren‘s Pippilotta Provisiona Garbedina Dandeliona Ephraim’s Daughter Longstocking, what a great name!

Selma: Kunterbunt, klar doch, die Pipi-Langstrumpf-Farben, kenn ich doch von Astrid Lindgren und der Villa Kunterbunt 🙂

Klausbernd: Well, does there something really exist like colours of the summer ? Okay, take red for the heat, yellow for the sun and the ripe corn, mint for cooling down and pink as the colour of the roses with their enchanting scent in summer. Are you pleased with this?

Klausbernd: Huch, gibt es überhaupt so etwas wie Sommerfarben? Naja, ich sag’s ‘mal so: Rot für die Hitze, Gelb für die Sonne und das reife Korn, Mintgrün, ein kühler aufgehellter Türkiston, zur angenehmen Abkühlung und Rosè, das die Engländer pink nennen, für die Farbe der Rosen, die so betörend duftend im Sommer blühen. Zufrieden?

Selma: The German women’s magazine “Brigitte”, a glossy paper which pretends to know what women like, coins as the colours of this summer lemon yellow and poppy red and advises to wash these colourful garments inside out to save their luminance. The German eccentric fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld dictates for Chanel mint as the colour of this summer.

Selma: Die Frauenzeitschrift “Brigitte”, die angeblich weiß, was Frauen denken, kreiert als Sommerfarben für dieses Jahr Zitronengelb und Klatschmohnrot und empfiehlt übrigens solche Kleidung linksherum zu waschen, um ihre Leuchtkraft zu erhalten. Karl Lagerfeld setzt bei Chanel auf Mint als die Farbe für diesen Sommer.

Klausbernd: I have always asked myself if rather the warm or the cold colours fit for the summertime. Well, during the summer you want to cool down this is an argument for the cold colours of the right side of the colour circle. Therefore people living in the desert like the Tuareg wear blue. On the other hand it is (hopefully) warm in summer and so the warm colours of the left side of the colour circle fit. These are the shades of yellow and of course orange which Goethe sees in his “Theory of Colours” as the warmest colour of the spectrum.

Klausbernd : Ich habe mich immer gefragt, ob eher die warmen oder die kalten Farben für den Sommer passen. Naja, im Sommer benötigt man Abkühlung und das spricht für kalte Farben, weswegen Wüstenvölker wie die Tuareg Blau tragen. Der Sommer selbst ist natürlich warm – so hofft man zumindest – und so passen die warmen Farben wie z.B. Gelbtöne oder das Orange, das Goethe als den Wärmepol des Spektrums ansieht.

Dina: The theory of colours assumes colour types since Johannes Itten, the teacher of the Bauhaus and colour theorist. Masses of fashion advisers greedily use this idea. The summer-types are the blue eyed blonde people with a rather pale skin, actually the Nordic type like me. We are recommended to wear jeans-blue, azure or raspberry red. Itten recommends rather the cold colours for the summer-type.  

Dina: Sag mal, in der Farbenlehre spricht man doch seit dem Bauhauslehrer Johannes Itten von den Farbtypen, auf die sich gleich ein Heer von Modeberatern gierig gestürzt hat. Die Sommertypen sind die blauäugig Blonden, jene Menschen mit eher blasser Hautfarbe, der nordische Typ wie ich. Für uns wird Jeansblau, Himmelblau oder Himbeerrot als Kleiderfarbe empfohlen. Itten empfiehlt also eher die kalten Farben für den Sommertypus.

Siri: Oh dear, don’t you see that this system of attribution is quite dogmatic? Which colour suits me is dependant on my mood and is changing with age and many factors. There arises this problem with any typology, nobody really fits in. We are too individual and mostly a mix of types – even we Bookfayries!

Siri: Naja, merkt ihr denn nicht, das System von Itten ist keineswegs frei von einer gewissen Dogmatik. Welche Farbe mir steht, hängt doch auch von meiner Stimmung ab und das wandelt sich mit dem Alter und überhaupt gibt es das Problem wie bei allen Typenlehren: keiner entspricht genau einem Typen. Wir sind doch (auch) individuell, d.h. letztlich Mischtypen, selbst wir Buchfeen.

Dina: Was bedeutet es denn, wenn ich vom Sommer Träume?

Klausbernd: A dreamt summer expresses a longing for warmth and for an easy and happy life. Summer symbolises energy, action and success but it can also express a desire for a holiday. Henry James wrote that the two words ‘summer’ and ‘afternoon’ are the finest English words. Virginia Woolf claimed that her life was based on a summer’s dream she has had in her children’s room at St. Yves. For the German author Klaus Mann summer is “the taste of blue air”.

Klausbernd: Sommer bedeutet Sehnsucht nach Wärme und nach einem einfachen, heiteren Leben. Der Sommer ist ein Symbol der Energie, der Tatkraft und des Erfolgs. Solch ein Traum kann auch eine Sehnsucht nach Ferien ausdrücken. Der amerikanische Romancier Henry James befand, dass die beiden Worte ‘Sommer’ und ‘Nachmittag’ zu den schönsten der englischen Sprache gehören. Virginia Woolf behauptete, dass das Fundament ihres Lebens auf einer Sommererinnerung beruht, die sie dösend in ihrem Kinderzimmer in St. Yves hatte und für Klaus Mann ist Sommer “der Geschmack der blauen Luft”.

Red symbolises activity and this is connected with summer for us as well as erotic
Yellow is associated with sun and a high mood, but it was very rarely the favourite colour in fashion as you will read next week
Pink and mint are cool colours which radiate a certain fresness – and don’t they harmonise together well?

A remark from Siri Bookfayrie about colours: The words we use for colours are very vague and especially in the field of broken colours like pink and mint. Everybody understands a differnt shade of a white broken blueish red as pink and of a white broken turquoise as mint. 
Anmerkungen von Siri Buchfee: Pink, Rosa und Rosé wie auch Mint sind keine klar definierten Farben. Das liegt daran, dass sprachliche Ausdrücke für Farben sehr ungenau sind und Farbabstufungen nicht eindeutig unterscheiden. Farbtheoretisch ist Pink die englische Übersetzung von Rosa, was ein weißgebrochenes blaustichiges Rot ist, und Rosé dessen französische Übersetzung, nicht mehr und nicht weniger. Mint ist ein kalter, stark weißgebrochener Grünton, man könnte es auch als ein stark aufgehelltes Türkis bezeichnen.

    • Here I’m again, time for tea and my favourite blog!
      I can’t believe what you have done to Circe, she looks wonderful in red and white! Pink and mint really look great together, but I’m Nordic and it comes as no surprise to you, summer is yellow and blue for me and my stuga, like it is red, white and blue for Dina. I always bring my latest books with me and of course I looked at every book in the yellow photo. Interesting way of keeping your books by colours like Dina does. I personally coudn’t survive this kind of order 😉 sorry, Dina, but it inspired me to look at the back of my books.
      3 books by Klausbernd with a yellow back, it looks refreshingly good.
      My break is over, enjoy your weekend, all for of you!

      I agree I couldn’t live with my books ordered by colours. It would drive me crazy but I am amazed Dina can.
      I wanted to make yellow and blue the colour theme of our house but in the end we all decided for all the six colours, but there is a lot of yellow against blue in our house. This combination is Swedish as Swedish can be for me.

      thank you! After 36 hours constant rain – which was really good for the garden 🙂 – we have a bright and warm summer day today and the barometer shows that the weather will stay like this – at least over the weekend 🙂
      I suppose at a certain age the dream of summer is of a summer past. The season quite often symbolise the different ages of people and the summer is this time you feel in full power and attractive. If you have passed this age then dreaming of summer is dreaming of a time which is gone. It symbolises caducity quite often. But after summer comes the harvest and the gay colours of autumn …

    • As I live here in an extreme maritime climate with neither hot nor cold temperatures I do’t mind if we have summer or autumn. The temperatures don’t differ much if at all. In general I prefer cooler weather too. But you would be astonished, my favourite season is winter. I like the real Scandinavian winter with cold temperatures, lots of snow and, of course, with northern lights. When I was a child I lived in such a climate and quite often in my life again and I noticed such a winter makes me happy immediately.

  5. When I was young there were colours that transitioned through our lives – like Sinatra Red, for instance. What the devil was it ? – I can no longer remember. I think everyone’s ideas of colours are different: when I say that yellow is my favourite colour, you can’t know precisely what I mean, can you ?! And as for blue !!! – about a squillion shades of blue, I think. But colour is a wonderful part of our lives, and a wonderful thing to blog about, your four … Thank you !

      well, there is colour and colour 😉
      If we say our favourite colour is blue (like for most people in our western culture) everybody knows what we mean. We think of a kind of archetypal blue, the idea of blue like in the blue flower of Romantic, blue like water and sky. If we say we drive a blue car then everyone will have a different idea of the particular shade of blue. As bigger the colour space is as more different ideas about the shade people have. With blue and green the differences are quite big whereas with yellow there are hardly any differences.
      All colour theorist agree that there exist 6 prismatic colours only since the engraver J.C. Le Blon in 1730 and everyone has an idea of these six colours. In an everage we can differentiate between 250 shades of these 6 prismatic colours (women a little bit more, men a little bit less) but not more. If we want to talk about those shades we have to specify the CMY-values for surface colours or RGB-values for light colours – which means the percentage of any primary colour in this shade (C for Cyan, M for Magenta, Y for Yellow, R for Red, G for Green and B for Blue). But nobody does this except in design, printing and other professional use of colour.
      I agree when I talk in a ‘normal way’ about colour you don’t exactly know which shade I am thinking of – but on the other hand it is usually not necessary in everyday life.

Sommerfarben sind für mich das wärmende Gelb der Sonne, der Sonnenblumen, mit einer Tendenz zum Gold der Weizenfelder (dieser Bücherstapel hat mich sofort angesprochen), das kühle Blau tiefer Bergseen und der Nuancenreichtum der Meeresblaufarben. Und dann gehört das tiefsatte Grün der Wiesen dazu, unbedingt!

      da gibt dir besonders die liebe Selma völlig recht, die nämlich auch alles Grüne im Sommer liebt. Hier ist gerade der Rasen so tiefgrün nach all dem Regen, es sieht umwerfend aus. Und Gelb und Blau da sind wir alle uns völlig einig.

Which colour suits me is dependant on my mood and is changing with age and many factors. ” So on one summer’s day I may favour blue and a gentle warming yellow. Another day, I may be enchanted by the green canopy of trees over my lazy head. Sometimes pleasure comes from white clothing or white clouds in the summer sky. Have a colourful weekend.   14. I do love your post! But I have to comment in norwegian!
    Flotte bilder, Dina! Ser helt klart dere i en rosa folkevognbuss og deg og Klausbernd i matchende farger sittende foran bilen med hver sin G&T!….smiLER!
    Jeg mener at modellen som du viser her, med vindu i taket, heter “California”. da blir det vel og blomster i håret eller??

    I forbindelse med 200 årsjubileet har en fått info om mange flaggforslag som ble diskutert i 1814! (her finner du eksempler: http://www.nrk.no/17mai/det-norske-flagg-kunne-vaert-gront-1.11683451)
    Fargene i det norske flagget ble begrunnet i fargene til både Frankrike, Nederland, USA og Union Jack.
    Men, i utgangspunktet ønsket et fattig lite land å spare penger (Meltzers ). I tillegg ville en vise tilknytningen til både Danmark og Sverige. Oppskriften ble: Man tager “Dannebrog” og syr i et blått kors for å vise “vennskapet” med Sverige og vips, så har en laget det norske flagget! I ettertid har en så prøvd å forklare valget med farger i naturen! (Norge i rødt – hvitt og blått)

    Og ja, det blå og grønne tilhører sommeren. Gulnyansene til rød er sol – midnattsol! Jeg har også gode følelser til fargene i leskende sommerdrikker fra hvitvin – rosevin via gyldne med skum og over i rødt,- joda, sommeren ER fargerik… Å seile avsted på stille vann med godt drikke i en snor etter båten for å få den riktige temperaturen før det drikkes…AHhh!

      takk for den flotte kommentaren din og unnskyld at jeg ikke svarer før nå. Glimrende forklaring på flagget! 🙂 Jeg elsker Rosé og jeg smiLER (har jeg lært av deg :-)) når jeg tenker på å være ute på vannet med drikke i en snor etter båten! 🙂
      Kan du hjelpe meg igjen; jeg holder på å pakke kofferten igjen og jeg må tenke lett. På enden av reisen er jeg i Fredrikstad når Tall Ship Races finner sted: hvilke linser hadde du tatt med deg får å fotografere disse imponerende skipene?
      Har der hatt like fint vær i Trondheim som på Østlandet? Varmen er på vei til Rhinerdalen, til helgen skal det bli godt over 30° her også.

    • Trøndelag har toppet temperaturlista de siste dagene, deilig og varmt og rundt 25 grader! Vi gleder oss til pinsefeiring med storfamilien, barnebarn, båtliv, pinstirøk (bålbrenning i trygge former)
      Du har jo et utmerket fullformatkamera (dvs1:1) Nikon800!
      En vidvinkel hvis du får båtene nært! (14-24mm eller 24-70mm) 14-24mm forvrenger linjer om du er veldig nært, det kan gi en stilig effekt!
      70-200mm for foto på avstand! (og jeg har alltid med meg 50mm 1.4, den er så liten og lett! Og, jeg snakker om nikonlinser nå!
      Ønsker dere ei super pinsefeiring, med eller uten “pinstirøk”!

    • Supert, tusen takk for hjelpen Han! Jeg har die tre store Nikon Objektivene, men ikke 50mm. Lønner dette innkjøpet seg da, når jeg har 24-70mm (2.8)? Pinstirøk -dette fine ordet er helt nytt for meg, det blir sikkert fine greier.

    what a wonderful post! Lovely photos and thoughts. My favourite summer colour must be white if I go by the look of my summer wardrobe, but I also very much like your fine combination of pink and mint. That sounds like an excellent idea for summer holiday in England: to rent a pink campervan and let your hair out! 🙂 My favourite photo is the yellow pile of books. Lots of interesting stuff here, I can detect at least three languages if not four! I suppose Siri and Selma can read any languages? What do you think about Rubenfeld’s “The Interpretation of Murder”? Seeing it now, reminds me about my list of books to get, it’s quite long and I’ll never get to the bottom of it. Have you seen the film?

      thank you so much for your kind words 🙂
      I agree that white is great for summer and in the 19th century it was the classic summer-colour for ladies and gentlemen alike. But Siri and Selma avoid white because it has this impertinent tendency to become dirty. Selma thinks that her white dress just attracts dirt without her doing something, just to annoy her 😉
      I am amazed how many of our readers like this yellow pile of books. And you spotted it right: Bookfayries are able to read any language. Do you know “Hitchhiker’s Guide to Galaxy”? Sorry, it isn’t a yellow book, but there you read about the Babel Fish, a fish you put in your ear to understand every language. Our beloved Bookfayries have something similar. It’s the Babel Owl they put on their heads and can read everything in whatever writing and language it is. Unfortunately it works for Bookfayries only – I envy them for their Babel Owls.
      “The Interpretation of Murder” is entertaining to read if you are interested in the group dynamics of the early psychoanalysts around Freud. You learn quite a lot of these different eccentric characters.

    keine leichte Frage, die ihr da stellt. Die Farbe des Sommers! Obwohl ich rot sehr mag bin ich doch der Meinung, der Sommer hat die Farbe eine kobaltblaus. Rot ist für mich eher der Herbst.
    Trotzdem mag ich das Foto des rosa VW Buses. Wie selten sieht man sie, egal welche Farbe, noch auf den Straßen.

      schön, von dir zu lesen.
      Ja, diese VW Busse hatten doch etwas. Sie sind hier gerade sehr in Mode, aber fürchterlich teuer. Ein Freund von uns besitzt die Firma Groovy Camper, die solche Busse aufkauft, vom Feinsten herrichtet und verkauft oder vermietet. Die könnten Tag und Nacht arbeiten, so viel Nachfrage haben sie. Und sie spritzen auch klassisch einige dieser Busse pink und mint.
      Ich hatte einst solchen Bus in gelb, der richtig gemütlich war, aber eine lahme Ente. Heute würde ich das positiv sehen als Erziehung zur Langsamkeit.

      Hier ist es wieder richtig sommerlich nach all dem Regen, der aber unseren Garten in ein grünes Paradies oder einen grünen Dschungel verwandelte, je nachdem, wie man es betrachten möchte. Aber ich habe mit Selmalein gerade den Rasen gemäht, da spricht man dann leicht von grüner Hölle 😉

  22. Lovely article as always KB and Dina. Thoughts of colours to float off the mind, and lovely photos to accompany the ideas.
    For me, summer is always about green. All the different greens of the shrubs, trees, and hedgerows. The neat English lawns, and the gardens of the promenades of coastal towns.
    And the taste of salt. Salt in the air at the seaside, salty fingers and toes after paddling, salt lines dried around legs and feet.

      most of our readers see green as the colour of the summer – like Selma.
      After all this rain the weather is great again and our lawn is as green as hardly ever before. I did cut it with Selma and it was like bathing in green. But green is for me spring and autumn as well. In spring it’s the pastel green and in autumn when we have the first rain again my lawn changes from brown to green again.

  23. Oh, I like your pink and mint and the escape boat is great! My summer colour is a sunny yellow. I love this bright, happy colour that can’t help but bring a smile to your face. I use it in my interior; through artwork and accent pillows I have two simple ways to let the “sunshine” into our living room. To make the colour pop even more, I sometimes pair it with a soft neutral, such as grey or white.

      Our escape boat is great, isn’t it! And such an escape camper van would be great too 🙂
      I love actually more or less every shade of yellow. And if one wears something yellow one looks much more tanned as one actually is. Travel magazines use this showing quite often a lady with a yellow bikini lying on the beach.
      I especially love the combination yellow and a medium grey like you do as well. We seem to have a similar taste.

    • Naja, du hast schon recht, Schwarz bringt jede bunte Farbe noch mehr zur Geltung und lässt die warmen Farben noch heller wirken. Speziell Nolde nutzte dies, indem er für einige seiner Blumenbilder schwarze Rahmen wählte.
      Der Nachteil von Schwarz als Sommerfarbe: Schwarz zieht Hitze an, da es Strahlung absorbiert. Ich fahre ein schwarzes Auto und im Sommer fahre ich ständig offen oder lasse die Klimaanlage laufen, da es sich sonst zur mobilen Sauna entwickelt.

  26. Schöner Artikel! Siri und Selma, ihr seid voll trendig! Ich las neulich, langsam werden wieder peppige Farben in, knallige Farben wie Royalblau, Kirschrot, Pink und Gelb liegen voll im Trend. Für mich als Mann kommt dann nur ein Accessoire in Frage. Zu gewagt: rote Sneakers zu weißer Hose? 🙂

      rote Sneakers zu weißer Hose ist voll kühn. Gestern sah ich am Strand einen älteren Herrn mit weißer Hose mit messerscharfer Bügelfalte, königsblaues Shirt, gebügelt natürlich, und gelben Sneakers. Ich fand das schick. Bei T-Shirts kann man sich doch auch einiges erlauben als Mann. Peppiges T-Shirt unter schwarzem Jacket finde ich z.B. edel. Früher trug ich zu Farbvorträgen und TV-Sendungen oft ein pink T-Shirt unter schwarzen Jacket mit feinen grauen Streifen.
      Siri und Selma bedanken sich herzlich bei dir, lieber Jürgen. Sie sind bereits kichernd in ihren Kuschelbettchen verschwunden.

      wir sind auch immer wieder erstaunt, wie viele Menschen in Deutschland schwarz tragen. Das ist hier in Norfolk und überhaupt in England nicht so – zumindest nicht in unseren Kreisen. England ist bunter als good old Germany, wie uns scheint. Wie es in tropisch warmen Regionen ist, wissen wir gar nicht, da wir nordische Typen sind und es uns immer nach Skandinavien, in die Arktis, eben in den Norden zieht, wo übrigens auch Weiß eine wesentliche Farbe ist. Die Hoch-Arktis ist ja völlig weiß. Übrigens ist auch deswegen unsere Lieblingsjahreszeit der Winter, wir lieben den weißen Schnee …

      I like yellow as well, but it looks best if I am tanned. In winter, when I am pale, it doesn’t look so well on me.

      you are right, now I remember this pink and mint icecream too and there were sweets pink and mint as well.
      A long time ago I had a friend and she had everything in this peachy colour, not only her clothes but her towels and bedcovers too. Actually I liked it. But I don’t have any peachy clothes, only towels. For me it’s rather a colour for women. But of course I have beautiful roses of this colour in my garden and honeysuckle too.

  31. Fun post Dina, Klaus and Bookfayries 🙂 You forgot to talk about how people’s own coloring often dictates the shades they wear most often. Personally, I avoid red, yellow and orange as it make my olive skin-tone look completely sallow! I do love the colors of summer tho – one gets tired of the drab blacks and browns of winter!

      I agree the colour of your skin is quite important. I just wrote it above, when I am tanned yellow is great for me but not when I am pale in the wintertime. And the colour of one’s eyes usual fits as well. F.e. I am blue eyed and blue suits me.
      I like to combine a colourful T-shirts or whatsoever with grey. A light brown I like as well. This colour of sand like yellow makes most of the people look more tanned as they actually are.

  32. Ah, such a delightful colourful post, you have my head swimming with colours of a kaleidoscope now! Since I am a passionate gardener I cannot choose a summer colour because there are far too many – crimson red, white, pink, and yellow roses; purple irises and alliums; red, magenta, cerise and baby pink pelargoniums; violet-blue, purple and sky-blue hardy geraniums; orange lilies and poppies and calendula; fuchsia pink and pastel pink cosmos; deep red and purple fuchsias and on and on and on…

    and yet all I wear are denim blue jeans and T-shirts of any colour except yellow – that does not flatter my colouring. So I agree with Siri – follow your heart, not fashion.

      May we ask you a question, please? We have a fuchsia in our garden which doesn’t flower at all. But in the gardens of some of my neighbours fuchsia grow big like little bushes. Is there a special trick growing fuchsias?

    • Cheers KB! I actually don’t have a garden at present, just a few pots, but I do like visiting gardens.

      I don’t know why your fuchsia isn’t flowering, I never do much with mine, although only the hardy ones usually survive the winter. They do like well-drained soil (hate being too wet), add some fertiliser in spring and keep moist, and they like some shade in the hottest part of the day. I assume yours is a hardy fuchsia if it survives the winter outdoors. I did have one once that refused to flower. Eventually I dug it up and placed it somewhere else – in a shadier spot – and told it to grow or go on the compost heap! Within a couple of years it was a huge bush, flowering madly each year. Maybe you just need a few magic words from the Bookfayries 🙂

      Goethe was quite a gardener as well, he had quite a big garden behind his so called “House in the Garden”. Nature inspired him to write about colours. Before he died he said to his secretary Eckermann that of all his work the “Theory of Colours” is the most important one and he is most proud of.

      ja, mit den Lieblingsfarben, Sommerfarben etc. ist es im Grunde stets die Frage, wo sie auftreten. Ich würde z.B. weder mint noch pink Hemden oder gar Hosen tragen, aber so einen Bus derart gespritzt, fände ich schon toll.

It’s good to have you bookfayeries for thinking extra…My colours are green, brown, red, burnt orange. And always black and white. I love blue but cannot wear it. My skin colour says EARTH colours!     • Guten Abend,
      hattest du auch solch einen feinen Hochsommertag heute? Hier war’s heiß und sonnig den ganzen Tag, auch schon gestern, so waren wir im Garten und auf dem Boot.
      Ich finde auch, es gibt atemberaubende Blautöne. Nicht umsonst war Blau die Symbolfarbe der Romantiker und du hast recht, es passt zum Sommer wie zum Winter. Himmelblau ist für mich eher sommerlich und die satten, dunkleren Blautöne eher winterlich. Blau war lange Zeit eine der wertvollsten Farbe mit der deswegen der Himmelsmantel der Maria klassisch gemalt wurde. Das Pigment wurde aus fein zermahlenen Lapis Lazuli hergestellt, eine Pigment, das sich nur wenige Maler leisten konnten.
      Ich trage gerade ein himmelblau-weiß gestreiftes Hemd …

  44. Ihr Lieben, gerade kommen wir von einem schönen Sommer Nachmittag im Greenwich Park zurück. Welche Farben ich dort gesehen habe? Der Himmel war blau, das Gras grün, der Cidre gelb, die Erdbeeren rot und der Kuchen schokoladenbraun. Ihr seht also, unser Sommer ist kunterbunt. Braun habe ich in Eurer Liste vermisst. Ist wahrscheinlich eher eine Herbstfarbe. Aber der Schokoladenkuchen schmeckt trotzdem. Und ich bin auch der Schokoladeneis-Typ. Deshalb gehört braun auch zu meinen Sommerfarben. Liebe Grüße, Peggy

      wir Buchfeen lieben auch Schokolade in jeder Form und zu jeder Jahreszeit, die Hauptsache Schokolade! 🙂
      Weißt du was? Wir hatten auch schon die ersten Erdbeeren in unseren Hanging Baskets an der Sauna, aber es waren nur zwei. Es kommen aber viele auf unserem Erdbeerfeld. Wir lieben Erdbeeren nämlich ähnlich sehr wie Schokolade 🙂

  47. Great post and photographs as always. I associate summer with the color of the Sardinia sea. It is a sort of aquamarine like a Caribbean sea but more beautiful. I have been spending my summers in Sardinia since I was a little kid and that color means summer, childhood, first loves, innocence, not a care in the world to me. 🙂

      it’s quite similar for me: summer is connected with the sea. For me it was a northern sea as a child, the Baltic Sea at the Swedish coast and those islands there like Öland and Gotland (off the Finnish coast with all the roses there). And as you mentione it, first loves seem to be very important for our likes. For me they took place in Sweden with all this innocent excitement and thrills, first experiences at the beach …
      Unfortunately I have never been to Sardinia but I know people who go crazy about this island, especially some of the nature freaks living here.
      The blue of the seas are so fascinating because it changes all the time, I suppose.

    A lovely post as always.
    I got two things about it: 1. my favorite color is yellow (regardless of the season), so I am looking forward to reading all about it next week; 2. The lovely photograph of Siri’s and Selma’s summer books (which, BTW, are mostly yellow!) includes one that I read a few years ago, The interpretation of murder: I quite liked it, but a psychiatrist friend of mine gave the book a pretty bad review – I would be interested in having Master’s or any of the other Fab Three’s 😉 opinion about it, how did you like it?

    • Dear Stefano,
      then we have something in common, my favourite colour is yellow as well. On the other hand I have always my problems with favourite colours. If somebody would ask “what is your favourite colour?” I would answer yellow immediately, but I wouldn’t like yellow as the colour of my car f.e. and wouldn’t like a yellow jacket neither. It’s funny that we all have our favourite colours but they are not favourite everywhere. I have a lot of yellow in my house from the colour of walls to yellow wardrobes, cushions, carpets, bedcovers etc. but for my car I choose black and I wear a lot of light brown and blue clothes.
      “The Interpretation of Murder”: I see it as a great introduction into the differences and ways of communicating of the early psychoanalysts. You have to see a psychiatrist is seen from our point of view – the psychoanalytical one – as a craftsman whereas a psychoanalyst is seen as an artist. Psychoanalysis is quite near to philosophy and philology in its method and its own understanding, whereas a psychiatrist understands himself as a medic. And here comes old tradition and elitism in, in the European university system philosophy and philology is much higher rated than medicine, which is rather seen as craft using other sciences but hasn’t its own way scientific method. Therefore at the beginning of the term when the dons move into the universities the medics have to go far behind the philosophers and the philologist who under the firstones. Therefore you always find a certain kind of animosity between the psychoanalyst and psychiatrists. And I suppose that’s the background why this book has been badly reviewed by a psychiatrist. I think, like the novels of Yalom and Catherine Gildiner’s novel “Seduction”, Rubenfeld describes the early psychoanalysis in a creative and entertaining way with quite some irony. As Yalom’s and Gildiner’s novels Rubenfeld’s novel is well researched and as well written.
      Criminal story and psychoanalysis go very well together, you can see the analyst like the detective what actually Freud did. There is not such a big difference between Sherlock Holmes and Sigmund Freud.

    • Ha! You always make such great, fine points, dear Klausbernd! “Talking” to you is always an enriching and educational experience, and I thank you for taking the time to reply to my comments in so much detail.
      Regarding yellow, I am 100% like you: it is my favorite color, let’s say in its abstract form, as a color in and of itself. But like you, I would not buy a yellow car (mine is coal grey) or (with very few exceptions, like my favorite suspenders) yellow pieces of clothing. So, you made an excellent point.
      Thank you also for sharing with me your take about the interpretation of murder. As I said, I also enjoyed very much the read and found it entertaining and, for what I could tell, well researched. I also had the impression that there is some extent of friction between psychoanalysts and psychiatrists and it is interesting that you confirm this. And it may well explain the bad review! 😉

      There is indeed a difference between our abstract idea of colour and the concrete colour we find on a surface. The abstract idea seems to be archetypal, we find it in logos/advertisment, in literature and art f.e. but if we want to paint our kitchen cupboards we are much more influenced by the characteristics of the colours like how much light is reflected or absorbed, how this colour fits in the colour sheme of that kitchen and not to forget by fashion. Of course our likes and dislikes come in as well but only as one factor between many.

      When I learned to interprete dreams, I read all the books about dreams I could lay my hands on, including novels with this topic, that’s how I found “The interpretation of murder”. Like you, I enjoyed it very much. Most of all because the dialogues in the book are actually original statements. Rubenfeld explains it himself:

Now what do you think about that? 🙂 🙂
      Red & white, white & grey, black, blue, all sorts of green and then yellow, orange… This is of course unTHINKable for Klausbernd and the Bookfayries, but I find it very creative, good-looking and inspiring. And exciting! Because I never find what I’m looking for.

    Pippi Longstocking was my constant companion during my childhood. In many ways, she brought colour to my world. She was not afraid to challenge the educational system ( most times, I really didn’t quite understand the educational system – and still don’t) She had red hair (so did I) and she sailed the blue seas. She was strong, determined, did not tolerate bullies and was always on an adventure. Most of all, she was not afraid to have fun – lots and lots of fun.

    Every colour has significance and meaning, but for me, it all comes down one thought: colours signify living joyfully, embracing all – the good, the bad, the mundane, the challenges.

    Thank you you again for the marvelous photography, the conversation, the camaraderie. Hugs and more hugs coming to you…. 🙂

      we are all fans of Pippi Longstocking as well. Do you know that in Sweden they celebrate a Pippi Longstocking day? When I was a child all the girls ran around in clothes like Pippi and sang her song what I liked really much. And we boys we identified with Carlsson of course or even with her father the Pirate Ephraim Longstocking. – Astrid Lindgren produced such a colourful world for children and adults alike.

  52. Guten Tag, jetzt dachte ich, nachts hätte man mal bissel Ruhe von sich….träumte ich doch gefühlt die ganze Nacht vom Schuhe kaufen…..
    Ein Paar nach dem anderen musste ich anprobieren, die Qual der Wahl, alle Farben und Formen gab es im Angebot.
    Am Ende habe ich mich für ein Paar entschieden, sie waren weiß mit grünen Ranken drauf….
    Wie macht ihr leiben Buchfeen das nur, bei dieser Fülle an Möglichkeiten?!
    In KBs Traumbuch kann man lesen, dass die Schuhe im Zusammenhang mit der “Realität” stehen, also das fand ich sehr hilfreich, vielen Dank!

    • Guten Morgen, liebe Pia,
      ja, Schuhe haben mit Erdung zu tun und wenn da noch die Farbe Grün auftaucht, dann ist auch noch angesprochen seine Mitte zu finden, also seine Mitte zu finden durch Erdung. Sehr häufig, wenn das Thema Erdung und Mitte bzw. Ruhe und Ausgleich zu finden bei uns angesprochen ist, kommt im Traum die Farbe Grün vor. Sie stellt eben die Mitte und den Ruhepol des Farbenkreises dar. Grün zu betrachten beruhigt und entspannt. Auf grüner Wiese findet man seine Erdung …
      und natürlich auch, wenn man barfuß über Sand läuft, aber da sind wir schon Gelb und darüber kannst du morgen einiges hier lesen.

Liebe Dina, lieber Klausbernd, auch wenn Ihr es bestimmt kaum noch hören könnt: Euer blog ist so unterhaltsam, so schön und liebevoll gestaltet, dass man es eigentlich kaum noch ausprechen (ausschreiben) oder betonen braucht, aber die Sommerlust, die ihr mir nun mit dem bunten Beitrag gemacht habt, veranlasst mich dennoch, endlich mal ein generelles Lob an Euch zu senden. Und somit schicke ich einfach mal zwischendurch am Tage die allerbesten Grüße an Euch während ich nachdenke, wie man wohl die rote Farbe der Pfingstrosen am besten beschreiben würde, aber das ist auch egal, die Hauptsache ist, dass sie einfach passt, zur Blume und zum Geruch und zur Sommerahnung und dass ich durch Euren Beitrag überhaupt über die Farbe nachdenke!

    • Oh, liebe Eva,
      das ist aber ein lieber Kommentar, der uns allen sehr viel Freude bereitet 🙂 Sirilein und Selmalein sind ganz aus dem Häuschen über dieses Lob 🙂 🙂 Und weißt du was? Morgen geht’s mit den Farben weiter. Da habe ich etwas über Gelb geschrieben, worüber wir uns bereits andeutungsweise in einigen Kommentaren unterhielten.
      Farben zu beschreiben finde ich auch äußerst schwierig. Du hat schon recht, man muss sich einfach frei davon machen, eine Eindeutigkeit erzielen zu wollen. Wenn der sinnliche Eindruck herüber kommt, dann halte ich es für gelungen. Oftmals behilft man sich in solchen Fällen mit Metaphern (viele Farbnamen sind eigentlich Metaphern wie Erdbeerrot, Himberrot, Ferrarirot, Ziegelrot etc.) oder Vergleichen, das wirkt jedoch häufig zu gewollt oder zu umständlich. Mir gefällt es meist am besten, wenn der Autor/die Autorin ihr Gefühl angesichts dieser Farbe beschreibt. Ich habe gerade in den “Heinrich von Ofterdingen” hineingeschaut, da kommen viele Blaus im ersten Kapitel vor, aber Novalis beschreibt die Faben nur ganz einfach als Blau, Dunkelblau etc. Aber er schreibt da gleich zu Beginn einiges über Farben.

    • Lieber Klausbernd, vielen Dank für deinen schönen Antwortbrief, die Farben und was mit ihnen ausgedrückt werden kann, ist wirklich unheimlich interessant, kann man überhaupt eine Lieblingsfarbe haben? Ich finde, Fraben passen immer zu etwas. Du (Ihr) habt das ja auch geschrieben, zum Beispiel passen Fraben zu Gerüchen, zu Düften (klingt schöner :-)) ich wähle mein Parfüm eigentlich immer nach der Farbe der Kleidung aus, damit trifft man ja dann meist die Stimmmung. Aber warum mögen manche Menschen eine bestimmte Farbe manchmal einfach so gar nicht?
      So, und um gute Stimmung für den Tag zu bekommen, widme ich mich nun noch einmal in Ruhe dem nächsten gelbschönen 😉 Beitrag von Euch!

      das wäre übrigens auch ein spannendes Thema: Farben und Düfte. Bei den Synästhesien werden fast immer Farben mit Tönen verbunden, aber fast nie Farben mit Düften. Gelb ist für mich Sweet Lemon, ich habe so eine Körpercreme Sweet Lemon Body Butter, die ich sehr liebe und wenn ich mich damit eincreme, sehe ich immer gelb vor meinem geistigen Auge.

    • Lieber Klausbernd, ich würde zu gern wenigstens einmal im Leben eine synästhetische Erfahrung machen, das wünsche ich mir schon so lange und dann tröste ich mich damit, dass es mir vielleicht auf die Nerven gehen würde 🙂 (vor allem bei den Tönen, ich mag zwar Musik sehr, aber im Grunde “saugt” sie mir meine Gedanken ab und deshalb höre ich sie nur, wenn ich auch wirklich welche hören möchte und nie nebenbei) Vielleicht bleibt mir als Nicht-Synästhetiker aber doch noch die Option der Psychedelika? 😉

  59. I love your photos. Szintilla wrote a poem which I can read, but can’t translate. My Spanish and French are exceedingly rusty. I know a few words in German, Japanese, Chinese, Italian; but nothing in all the other languages.
    Would you be so kind to send me a translation in English of her poem posted on May 31. I realize it probably won’t rhyme like it does in her tongue.
    I decided to follow your blog because of your photography. The views are stunning and inspiring. I had no characters planned for Norway, or anywhere in Europe for that matter; but after seeing this I may have to create a need for that. Hopefully, I can describe in words what I see.
    Most of your commenters talked about seasonal colors. I had a hard time deciding on only one color per season. This gave me an idea for a blog–maybe in poem form. (Poetry is not my strong point.)
    I’m looking forward to reading more of your blogs and thank you for following mine.

    • Oh dear, no! I am not at all a good translator and especially not poetry. My abilities talking and writing foreign languages is quite limited. I always struggle with the English translation for this blog here. There are surely other bloggers visiting our Bookfayrie-blog who speak and write a much better English than I do.       today we had the perfect summer day – maybe the last one this year.
      We are just the opposite to you we prefer the clear winter cold over the summer heat. But unfortunately we live in the wrong area. In our part of East Anglia it’s never really cold and we have hardly ever real snow. We miss it but we go to Scandinavia or to the Alps in wintertime.
