A ship without sails appears rather naked, don’t you think? I, the nautical Bookfayrie Selma, think she looks a bit sleepy, as if she is not quite awake and fully dressed yet. Oh dear and now we are already at our topic: sexy sailing boats. We, Siri and Selma want to find out more about this sexappeal of tall ships by having a closer look at figureheads and ropes.

Ein Schiff ohne Segel erscheint nackt, meint ihr nicht auch? Ich, die nautische Buchfee Selma, denke, es wirkt irgendwie verschlafen, lasziv dümpelnd, noch nicht voll angezogen. Huch, damit sind wir schon bei der Erotik von Segelschiffen. Wir, Siri und Selma, wollen dem nun nach nachgehen, indem wir die Galionsfiguren und Seile genauer betrachten. Los geht’s.

As we took a closer look at the ships from the front we discovered the beauty of the figureheads. They never look sleepy, although they are mostly not fully dressed, if you know what we mean.  Stad Amsterdam and Christian Radich look grand with their figureheads, don’t you agree? They look like our fairy-colleague Fee-Christine Aks describes it in her novel “The Green Woman”: “The small figurehead is a slender girl with a long dress”. Following the poetic freedom she puts a blossom in her hand.

Schauen wir uns die Windjammer von vorne an, fällt uns sogleich die Schönheit der Galionsfiguren auf. Die sehen ganz und gar nicht verschlafen aus und keusch bekleidet sind sie auch nicht unbedingt. Sehen die Stad Amsterdam und die Christian Radich, das norwegische Schulschiff, nicht großartig mit ihren Galionsfiguren aus? Genauso wie unsere Kollegenfee Fee-Christine Aks in ihrem Roman “Die grüne Frau” (Kindle Ed., 2002) eine Galionsfigur beschreibt: “Die kleine Galionsfigur ist ein schönes schlankes Mädchen im langen Kleid”, allerdings gibt die Autorin ihr eine Blüte in die Hand.

 

Poor old figureheads! Is it prudishness that they are not much noticed? Okay, that S. Freud doesn’t mention them is understandable, he wasn’t interested in nautical affairs, but that C.G. Jung, an enthusiastic sailor, ignores them we cannot understand as they would fit perfectly in his concept of the Anima.
From the 14th century onwards the figurehead was seen as the soul of the ship. Many sailor believed that a guardian spirit lives in it who not only prevents wreckage but if it fails it securely leads the drowned ones to the nether world. 

Die Galionsfigur ist schon arm dran. Es beginnt schon damit, dass wenige wissen, wie man das Wort korrekt schreibt. Und wir fragen uns, ob es auf Prüderie zurückzuführen ist, das sie wenig Beachtung fanden. Okay, dass Freud sie nicht erwähnt, geht ja noch an, er stand der Seefahrt fern, aber auch der nautische Jung, ein begeisterter Segler, erwähnt sie auch nicht, obwohl sie so gut in sein Konzept der Anima gepasst hätte. Dabei sah man seit dem 14. Jh. die Galionsfigur als die Seele des Schiffes an. Viele Seefahrer glaubten, in der Galionsfigur lebte ein Schutzgeist, der nicht nur vor Schiffbruch bewahrt, sondern auch, wenn er Schlimmstes nicht verhindern konnte, die Ertrinkenden sicher in die Totenwelt geleitete.

Figureheads started with the Vikings around 800, as our dear Master told us. At this time the paintings of the bow became sculptured dragon and snakes heads to daunt the enemies like the coiled snake of the Oseberg Ship (Norway, around 800). Those figureheads were so frightening that they had to be taken off when sailing in their home waters. The figurehead showing a woman appeared around the 14th century fixed to the stem post. Besides women figureheads showed real and mythological animals, quite often lions. To show voluptuous wooden ladies got really fashionable from the beginning to end of the 19 century. You can see this at the Cutty Sark. This famous ship was baptised on our beloved Master’s birthday in 1869 and showed the witch Nannie Dee as her figurehead in a short shirt. Like all figureheads she watched keeping the course and prevented disaster.
The opposite is Niobe, the men killing figurehead from the novel “The Tin Drum” by Günter Grass (for which he got the Nobel Price).
By the way the German training ship Gorch Fock lost its figurehead five times in rough seas, but nevertheless she was seen as a particular secure ship. As famous as infamous is the figurehead of the galleone Neptun in Roman Polanski’s film “Pirates” although the pirates often used to remove the figureheads of the captured ships. Not as they were mostly gay as our Master told us but to make the ship lighter and faster by removing everything unnecessary and to hide the ship’s identity. 

Das alles fing mit den Wikingern so etwa um 800 an, wie Masterchen uns erzählte, als aus der Bemalung am Bug Drachen- oder Schlangenköpfe zur Einschüchterung von Feinden wurden wie beim Oseberg Schiff (ca. 800, Norwegen). Die waren oft so grausig anzusehen, dass sie in heimischen Gewässern abgenommen werden mussten. Die Galionsfigur als Frau tritt im 14. Jh. auf, wo sie auf dem Galion, dem Vordersteven, angebracht wurde. Allerdings stellte man dort auch Tiere und besonders häufig Löwen dar. Zur großen Mode wurden diese üppigen hölzernen Damen im 19. Jh. wie bei der Cutty Sark, die an Masterchens Geburtstag 1869 getauft und von der Hexe Nannie Dee im kurzen Hemdchen beschützt wurde. Wie alle Galionsfiguren hielt sie den Kurs im Auge und schützt vor Unglück ganz anders als Niobe, die männermordende Galionsfigur aus dem Roman “Die Blechtrommel” von Günter Grass. Übrigens das deutsche Schulschiff Gorch Fock verlor fünfmal ihre Galionsfigur, einen Albatros, galt aber dennoch als äußerst sicheres Schiff. Berühmt berüchtigt ist auch die Galionsfigur der Galeone Neptun aus Roman Polanskis Film “Piraten”. Allerdings entfernten häufig die Piraten die Galionsfiguren der erbeuteten Handelsschiffe, nicht weil sie meistens schwul waren, wie Masterchen meinte, sondern weil sie alles Unnötige abbauten, um die Schiffe schneller zu machen und unkenntlicher.

Many of the tall ships don’t have a figurehead, sad to say. Mir the second biggest and fastest tall ship, and Kruzenshtern, the third biggest tall ship which was originally German, sail without a figurehead – we hope safely. The figureheads disappeared with the steam ships as they didn’t fit to a straight bow. But thanks to the mermaids the figureheads didn’t disappear entirely. You still find them on privat yachts and training ships

Leider haben einige der Großsegler keine Galionsfigur. Mir, das zweitgrößte und schnellste Schiff der Welt and Kruzenshtern, das drittgrößte und ehemals deutsche Schiff, segeln ohne Galionsfiguren – hoffentlich sicher. Die Galionsfiguren verschwanden mit Aufkommen der Dampfschiffe, da sie nicht an geraden Bug passten, aber zum Glück nicht völlig, denn private Jachten und Segelschulschiffe führen diese Tradition fort.

This wooden guardian spirits of the ships remind me, the nautical Bookfayrie Siri, on the mermaids who provided security and at the same time were seducers. I suppose the figurehead seduces the mariner to be faithful to his ship, and if it had to be, until his death. Such female spirits can be traced back to the classic Greek demons of death like the Harpies and Lamies. And a BIG fairy secret: Europe, the figurehead of the ship Europa strikes our Master as irresistible (did you find it?). She allures the mariner to follow like the Loreley. But I ask you: where to? Well, you can read this in Ovid’s “Metamorphosis”. Europe is carried by Zeus disguised as a white bull onto the sea to be made happy. And now the clou: Europe is made happy in Greece 😉      

Die hölzerne Beschützerin der Schiffe erinnert mich, die liebkluge Sirifee, auch an die Nixen, jene Seejungfrauen, die mütterlichen Schutz und zugleich Verführung ausdrücken. Verführt nicht, frage ich euch, die Galionsfigur den Seemann seinem Schiff die Treue zu halten und wenn’s sein muss, bis in den Tod? Immerhin gehen solche weibliche Wesen symbolisch auf die klassischen Todesdämoninnen wie die Harpien und Lamien zurück. Großes Feengeheimnis: Die unwiderstehlichste Galionsfigur fand Masterchen die der niederländischen Europa (die könnt ihr mal suchen 😉 ), die wie die Lorelei den Seemann lockt. Wir fragen uns nur: “wohin?” Das könnt ihr bei Ovid nachlesen, wo Europa von keinem Geringeren als Zeus in Form eines weißen Bullen aufs Meer getragen wird, um beglückt zu werden. Und nun kommt der Clou: Europa wird in Griechenland beglückt 😉

And last not least: The figureheads were used as a phallic battering ram to capsize other ships in the time when ships were mainly rowed as in Viking times. 

Und noch etwas: Als Boote hauptsächlich gerudert wurden, benutzte man auch bisweilen die Galionsfigur wie bei den Wikingern, atemberaubend phallisch als Rammbock, um feindliche Schiffe zu kentern.

Ropes and Bonding

Well, the sexual connotation obvious, isn’t it? You don’t need to be a Freudian like our beloved Master to see ropes as sexual as the female figureheads.

Die Seile

Soweit zu den Galionsfiguren. Seile und die weiblichen Galionsfiguren besitzen die gleichen sexuellen Konnotationen. Um das zu sehen, muss man nicht Freudianer wie unser Masterchen sein.

 

If you take a proper look of these tall ships you will see ropes everywhere on them. On ships ropes are used for every form of fixing. We clearly remember when our dear Master was swearingly practising knots with long red shoe laces.

Wenn ihr euch diese Großsegler betrachtet, seht ihr überall Seile. Für jede Art des Festmachens und Bindens werden auf See Seile benutzt. Wir erinnern uns noch gut, wie Masterchen vor vielen Jahren mit roten Schnürsenkeln fluchend Knoten übte.

“A lady who knows the ropes will never really get tied up” – Selma, nautical Bookfayrie

Bruce Chatwin quotes in his travel-novel “In Patagonia” an old mariner’s saying: A favourable wind on the way back is seen as ropes of the lovers who drag the mariner back to them. But if it is dead calm or the wind is unfavourable then the lovers having just fun with other partners. So it is clear, the rope symbolises the sexual attraction between men and women. We speak of bonding which the mariner fears like the vampire the holy water.

Bruce Chatwin beschreibt in „In Patagonien“ eine alte Seemannsvorstellung. Weht der Wind günstig bei der Rückreise, sagen die Seeleute, dass die Geliebten mit Seilen das Schiff in den Hafen ziehen. In der Flaute allerdings oder beim ungünstigen Wind vergnügen die Geliebten sich gerade mit einem anderen Liebhaber. Das Seil symbolisiert also die sexuellen Anziehungskräfte zwischen Mann und Frau, weswegen wir von ‘Bindung’ sprechen, die der Seemann wie der Teufel das Weihwasser fürchtet 😉

 

Bonding as in captivation expresses absolute power over the bound one and on the other hand absolute surrender. It’s the sea and ship which binds the mariner.
Ropes are often a dream symbol for a tight bonding which is constricting. But bonding can also be fascinating, a source of lust like in the Reage’s classic novel “The Story of O” or in E.L. James’ “Fifty Shades of Grey“. Even there you have to get your ropes in order otherwise they get entangled 😉

Die Fesselung drückt die Herrschaft über den anderen und zugleich die absolute Hingabe aus. Es sind Meer und Schiff, die den Seemann ziehen und fesseln.
Im Traum sind die Seile oftmals ein Bild für eine beengende Bindung. Aber die Fesselung, das Bonding, kann auch das Fesselnde, eben eine Quelle der Lust sein wie in “Die Geschichte der O” und “Fifty Shades of Grey“. Auch dort muss man die Seile immer fein ausrichten, dass sich nichts verheddert 😉

    What a pity they don’t produce ships made for figureheads and viceversa any more.
    Yesterday I saw the trailer to Fifty Shades… olalala… I have read the book and honestly, I can’t understand why it’s SO immensly popular, do you? I suppose, this trailer will bring Fifty Shades to teh top once more.

      I agree it’s a pity that figureheads are out of fashion. But there are collections of figureheads in Germany, the Netherlands and England. In Vancouver in a park you can see a former figurehead, a dragon.
      Fifty Shades … I see it as a very prudish book and that was necessary to become a seller. This student and her master are a faithful bourgeois couple who are playing the old game master and slave. If you compare Fifty Shades with “The Story of O” then Fifty Shades is a demure novel. But of course every wife and husband can play these games.
      I didn’t know that it got filmed. But, oh dear, filmed porn is quite often changing the story entirely. I saw “The Story of O” as film and was absolutely amazed that it was made into a kind of romantic love story. Pauline Reage would have been shocked.

  6. Wonderful post–words and images are all so interesting! A museum near us has a number of figureheads displayed as examples of folk art and they are as beautiful as the ones you feature (although fully clothed, as I recall!)

      now we are curious: Where is “near us”?
      It seems to us that the European figureheads are quite often bare breasted or naked, the American ones are mostly fully dressed. The famous American prudishness can be seen there as well. In continental Europe and Scandinavia those figureheads have quite often been ralations to the mermaids. Following the iconographical tradition they have to be bare breasted because they are proud of their breasts and their sexual power.

    • Yes, upstate New York, and the museum I mentioned is Shelburne Museum, just south of Burlington, VT. They have a great collection of folk art, including weather vanes, shop signs, quilts, and figureheads–all very proper!

      you wouldn’t believe it, I even know Burlington. I gave some lectures at the Goddard College and translated a critical book about modern cities by Murray Bookchin who taught at this college. But I was not staff of Goddard College but taught as a specialist (well, you wouldn’t believe it) of illuminated manuscripts of the Carolingan time at McGill/Montreal for 5 years.
      That’s a long, long time ago. I doubt if the Shelburne Museum existed then. At least I cannot remember a collection of figureheads.

    And naked they sailed on. Despite rather windy conditions, we went to see them all get dressed (set sail) at the end of the Hvaler islands. But alas, they sailed on stark naked. But what a sight it was anyway. As for the figureheads, it was bad luck having women ONBOARD ships in those days, but OUTBOARD it might be seen as good luck. I suppose men in those days also had a form of mother dependancy 😀 hence, the presence of a lady.
    Anyway, pictures are absolutely fantastic. ❤ and kisses from hot, hot Fredrikstad

      so good to read from you! We saw in the news how absolutely boiling hot (stekhett, glohett) it is in Fredrikstad now. And no end to the sun and the good weather, either! In Bonn it’s fine at the moment, lots of clouds, a little wind and just below 30°. Yes It’s a pity the sailed away without sails. Well, then we have something to look forward to the next time, we can top it then. 🙂

      Do you like pirates? I’m very much into pirates, I have studied all we could find out about male and female pirates and sometimes I even sleep on the various bookshelves with literature about piracy. You’re right about females not being welcome on board, that’s why the pirates Anne Bonny and Mary Read had to dress like males to get access to the ships.
      We feel a bit sorry for you having another heatwave in Norge, watch out Tone; now I blow a cooling breeze in your direction, do you feel it??

      You write that you suppose that men had a mother dependancy in those days. Well, I suppose most men have it still. Don’t you?
      Outside the ship there was always the seduction: mermaids and those naked or half naked figureheads. You can see this as a symbol: The Anima is banned from those societies of men and therefore she is luring all the time and has this power of seduction.

    • Excellent post! I’m not sure if it ‘s true that it was a bad omen to have women onboard, though. My English is not very good, sorry;

      ich las Klaus Hympendahl: “Sünde auf See – Die erotische Geschichte”, kennt hr das Buch? Dort wiederlegt der Autor den alten Seemanns-Aberglauben „Frauen an Bord bringen Unglück“. Im Gegenteil, Frauen auf Schiffen gab es, seit es Schiffe gibt. Sie fuhren als Passagiere, Mätressen, als Huren, als verkleidete Männer, ja wir ihr schon berichtet habt, selbst als Piratinnen mit. Weiter berichtet Hymphendahl von britischen Marineoffizieren, deren Liebesabenteuer rund um den Globus selbst Casanova hätten neidisch werden lassen. Er entdeckte eine chinesische Ex-Prostituierte, die noch vor 200 Jahren eine riesige Piratenflotte kommandiert hat und er erklärt die verborgene Geschichte mancher Galionsfigur. Ganz nebenbei wird die detailreiche Historie der Sexualität auf hoher See zu einer eindringlichen Sozialgeschichte der Schifffahrt, die jedwede Romantik in das Reich wohlfeiler Film-Sentimentalitäten verweist.

      no, it’s a pity but we didn’t take part in this race. We have no tall ship, a tiny dinghy only. And unfortunately we didn’t get a passage of one of these tall ships neither. So Dina and our beloved nautical Bookfayries watched it from another boat. Well, it’s a secret: As they got a presscard they could follow the ships coming in and going out on a VIP-boat. They even got the chance to climb a mast for taking pictures, oh dear.

      we were ask several times by some – well as we thought ‘dubious’ – publishers. On one hand we think our text-picture-combination works for blogging but for print we are not so sure. But that you obviously don’t doubt it make us think about it again.
      I don’t know if you know: I was quite a successful author who published several non-fiction bestsellers (mostly about symbolism like of colours and in dreams). And maybe I am too much blocked by my old concept of a book.

      You know from outside one can much better judge the potential of creative work.

      You and Hanne can successfully create a special genre for YOUNG BRIGHT people plus young people of my age in ebooks publishing.

      60 years ago I read a book by Karem (Marek) “Gods, Graves, Scholars” (novel of archeology). I still remember its profound impact.

      What do you have to risk? You can start with any format, with any new idea. You have a solid fundament, a house and can just make a new roof or new windows.

      it seems to be that we are more or less the same age because “Gods, Graves, Scholars” was a book that fascinated me as well when I was 15. By the way it’s in my library still.
      You are right, we have to try out what will work, a new form for the new media ebook. My German publishers did several ebook-editions of my work but didn’t change the text for this format. I suppose that’s wrong. Well, we go on trying different forms.
      Actually for me the new form of literature is blogging. I love it. For blogging is an ideal means of expressing myself.

      We now have fourthousandandfortyeight followers. We are quite proud about the number. And yet it’s only a number and we doubt that we are read by all of them. But Dina and myself are happy, because it opens many closed doors as far as taking photos are concerned. Like going on VIP boat for press people on the sail parade or getting admission to the Long Room at Trinity College in Dublin, a press card to the book fair in Frankfurt. Have you experinced any favours like this because you are blogging?

      Yesterday we had a talk with our granddaughter. She graduated from the Fashion Institute of Technology. I asked her how she liked fashon in the “My Fair Lady”.
      She did not see this movie, “Roman Holiday” and dozens of other outstanding movies. We spent several hours telling her what to see and what to read and she was very grateful for it.
      When I read your post today I thought how much young people like she could get from it. This is why I asked about publishing of ebook.
      I got a camera only a month ago, so there was no need to open any door. 😉

One aspect that seems to be constantly overlooked, not so much referring to what you’ve just discussed, but related to XVIII piracy is homosexuality, which seems that it was rampant during the long trips, but completely denied by all, once on shore. I’m unaware of any serious research in the subject, but it reflected a lot the hypocrisy and moralism of the Victorian society at the time. As you know, England staged a genius cup when promised them royal pardon if they would share their riches with the crown. Few took full advantage of it, as it was of their (pirates) nature to be restless and never settled down. But it served well to members of the navy who were all but pirates, in their ruthlessness and greed, but had the special benefit of being comfortable within the corridors of power then. Sir Walter Raleigh, anyone? Thanks for this.

    • You are absolutly right, in the English literature the homosexuality of pirates is hardly ever mentioned. But not so in the German literature and I suppose in the Norwegian, Dutch and Swedish literature neither.
      There was a funny incident. Some famous pirate, I cannot remember who it was, caught a ship going to India full with the most beautiful women for some harem. The pirates were baffled. They didn’t know what to do with all those women and decided to get rid of them as soon as possible, meaning disembarked them at some coast.
      In the Film “Pirates of the Caribbean” the gay side of pirates is shown. The problem is that we have nearly no literature about the everyday life on a pirate’s ship except by one ship’s doctor of the time of Defoe.
      And we agree with you that any sailor has his pirate-side more or less hidden in himself. It’s associated with freedom. The Frisian pirates had this saying “better dead than slave” (lever düad as slav).
      But even more supressed is the fact that the women not only started piracy but they were much, much more succesful (and ruthless) than their male colleagues. And even more taboo is that it were quite often the sexual freedom that made women going to sea.

    • You are right, dear Master, in the nordic literature this topic is often referred to. I suppose pirates are among the most heavily romanticized and fabled characters in history, I love them <3! It was a tightly bound brotherhood of men engaged in almost constant warfare. What did these men do for sexual fulfilment? Buccaneer sexuality differed widely from that of other all-male institutions such as prisons, for it existed not within a regimented structure of rule, regulations, and oppressive supervision, but instead operated in a society in which widespread toleration of homosexuality was the norm and conditions encouraged its practice. I found this in my english book "Sodomy and the Pirate" by B.R.Burg

Quite a variety here, some rather chaste like the one on Christian Radich, others voluptuous and undenaibly sexy like the lady on Europa.       I suppose that in the olden days the ropes were kept very neat, okay, maybe be not as neat as on Dina’s photos. I read in diaries of sailors of the 19th century what drastic punishments were delivered if the ropes were not kept in order. Even on the pirate’s ships they tried to keep everything order – in times they were not drugged.

I was a great fan of knots in the seventies – weaving all sorts of rope and twine into a variety of simple and complex knots to make macramé items.       wow, it’s so hot here that we can hardly think, still 27 C, but fortunately a little wind, 2 Bf. NW.
      Our beloved Master tried nautical knots. After a while he had lots of fun doing intricate knots. We never tried macrame. It looks quite complicated but a little a little bit like some of these special nautical knots you do for a show.
      We love living “next-the-sea”. If you once lived next-the-sea you cannot live anywhere else, you are spoiled for any other place. But nowadays we couldn’t afford to buy a house next the sea. We were lucky, we bought it nearly 35 years ago when it was affordable.

But I can’t get it together and ggogle was no help: there’s a time when the ropes deliberately have to be left untidy, do you know why? Because the captain of the ship is ill… or maybe dead… oder the owner is bankrupt.. ??

    • Aha, lieber Klausbernd, nun weisz ich Bescheid, warum unsere Charterboote keine Galionsfuguren hatten! 😉 Frauen – mindestens eine – waren naemlich immer dabei auf unseren Toerns. Auch wenn das gegen die alten Wikingertraditionen [Du erinnerst Dich an unseren Gedankenaustausch ueber “Roede Orm”] verstiesz. 😉
      Zu “Onedin Line”: habe ich auch mit Begeisterung geschaut. Und gelegentlich spiele ich mit dem Gedanken, sie mir auf DVD zu besorgen. Uebrigens: ich fand es immer schade, dass sie da – soweit ich es beurteilen kann – nur einen authentischen Windjammer hatten. Ansonsten waren es zu moderne Segler.

      danke fuer die Schiffsliste der Onedin Line Filme. 🙂 Den Preis hatte ich nicht mehr in Erinnerung. Der ist ja wirklich stolz! Oh my! Gerade habe ich mal bei Amazon.de nachgesehen. Da wollen sie doch tatsaechlich weit ueber 300 Euro! Dazu kommt, dass ich, wegen der Regionalcodes, DVDs aud Deutschland und Groszbritannien hier nicht abspielen kann. Oder nur auf Umwegen, indem ich sie naemlich erst einmal per Computer und Heimnetzwerk auf meine “homecloud” ueberspiele und dann, wieder ueber’s Heimnetzwerk, per DVD-Player darauf zugreife. Umstaendlicher geht’s kaum.

Jedoch sind die Einspielungen sehr alt and spröde und ich hatte auf eine verbesserte digitalisierte Qualität. Aber für den Preis? Nee, Dinamaus, sagt Selmafee, da machen wir lieber selbst eine Seefahrt!

    Det beste bevis på skipenes manndom må være når de er strippet for klæs (seil) og står igjen med synbar ereksjon, –
    mastene blir som store falloser!
    Dette ble en norsk-kommentar. Vi er nettopp ankommet fritidshuset og vil nyte reker og godt temperert
    hvitvin til Utmerket vær og rned temperatur på 27 grader. I kveld blir det nattbading….

    • Så fint at dere har slike tropiske temperaturer fortsatt, Hans. Nyt det så lenge det varer! Reker og hvitvin er det norskeste jeg kan tenke meg ved slike anledninger. I min oppvekst på Hvaler pleide vi å ro ut i sundet og stoppe reketrålerne på vei inn til byen. Den gang var det lov å kjøpe verdens beste og ferskeste reker direkte fra fiskerne. Det er det slutt på nå og rekene nesten også, oioioi så dyre de er blitt!

      Ja, jeg begynner å bli mer fortrolig med D800 nå, tusen takk for dine ord. Dere hadde sikkert en flott tur til Lofoten og Vesterålen, for et vakkert B&W du presenterer.

  28. I was here this morning and then got called away before I could tell you just how beautiful these photos are! Do you have any idea why figureheads were discontinued? Just because they stopped using wood for ships?

    • Dear GP Cox,

      it was because on the sailing ships they had this beam in the front to be able to enlarge the sailing area. This was the ideal place for the figureheads. When steam ships took over there was no need for such a beam any longer. And then the bow of the first steam ships went straigt down without a curve therefore there was no place for a figurehead any longer – except you would paint it on the sides. Last not least the climate had changed, one started to believe in machines and not in such a magic any longer. It was disqualified as superstition – what it actually was, of course. The believe in progress at this time left no space for such romantic figures.

Liebe Hanne, du hast GROSSARTIGE Photos gemacht, mein Herz schlägt hoch und höher, wenn ich all die feinen Segelschiffe und Galionsfiguren sehe- Die Fotomontagistin in mir (huch gibt es dieses Wort überhaupt!) denkt: auch weia, wie soll ich denn all die Strippen ausschneiden, pardon ich meine die Seile und Takelagen, ob es mir dann Lust bereiten wird 😉
    hej ja, lieber Klausbernd, du oller Aufklärer … ich musste wirklich immer wieder schmunzeln, und ich frage mich natürlich auch, ob wirklich in jedem Ding ein Sex wohnt … bei den Galionsfiguren stimme ich dir ja schon zu, wenn die nicht sexy sind, wer dann (lach) … aber die Seile … m … sind die denn nicht einfach notwendig und praktisch …

      Selma meint, klar bist du eine Fotomontagistin, bitte bedien dich. Also, wir finden die tollen Seile und Leinen, das ganze Tauwerk gehören dazu, auch zu den Galionsfiguren. Im Hafen geht es leider nicht ohne.
      Leinen sind praktisch und hilfreich, nicht nur auf dem Schiff 😉 Ich finde, dass das raue Leben zu See eine sehr erotische Seite hat, du nicht? Warum ist das so sexy? Siri und Selma wollten sich schmunzelnd ein Teil dieser erotischen Seite im Hafen anschauen, zur See steigert es sich 🙂 und die beiden haben sich sehr gefreut, dass du mitgeschmunzelt hast. 🙂

      Übrigens lese ich gerade "Die See" von John Banville, ein mehrfach preisgekröntes Werk. Der erste Satz hat es gleich in meinem kleinen Buch für besondere Sätze geschafft: "Sie sind gegangen, die Götter, am Tag dieser eigentümlichen Flut."
      In Bonn hat es sich abgekühlt, wie fein! Fredrikstad leidet geradezu unter einer anhaltende Hitzewelle mit tropischen Nächte; tagsüber immer über 30° und Nachts nie unter 20°, puuh.

    • guten Morgen, ihr Lieben!
      Das Meer ist für mich ein lebendigener Körper, damit fängt der Sex schon an, es kann verschlingen, umschmeicheln, streicheln.
      Um die Seefahrer selbst, in der Regel erscheinen sie als starke muskulöse Typen, ranken sich viele Mythen, da kann schon so manches Frauenherz höher schlagen, für mich ist der Johnny aus der Dreigroschenoper zu einer Metapher geworden, besonders in jungen Jahren. Johnny erzählt von der Sehnsucht, aber auch dem Verlassenwerden, erzählt davon, dass er Herzen bricht, dann aber wieder weiterzieht, weil er eigentlich mit dem Meer verheirat ist und so gibt es unzählige Gedichte und Romane, Filme und Lieder und immer geht es auch um Herzschmerz, um Eroberung, ein Wort, das wir ja auch in der Liebe benutzen, wobei ich das einmal in Frage gestellt habe (was stelle ich eigentlich mal nicht in Frage – lach) … und da geht es dann mit dem Sex weiter.
      Soviel,auf die Schnelle zu deiner Frage warum das Meer und die Seefahrer sexy sind.

      Ihr habt natürlich Recht, die Seile gehören unbedingt dazu, das war es ja, was mich als Fotomontagistin aufstöhnen liess 😉 Nochmals danke, dass ich Bilder von dir benutzen darf, das werde ich bald tun.

      Nun wünsche ich dir und Selma eine feine Zeit im Rheinland und Klausbernd und Achim eine inspirierende Woche, da kommen ja zwei Belesene zusammen, ich kann sie schon förmlich schwadronieren hören, grüsst doch bitte Achim auch von mir.

    • Guten Morgen, huch, gerade noch Morgen, liebe Ulli,
      ich glaube schon, dass eine sexuelle Seite in allem zu finden ist. Das macht ja Leben aus oder wie good old Nietzsche es so fein ausdrückt: “Der Mensch ist Seil gespannt zwischen Tier und Übermensch”. Wo kein Eros, da ist Thanatos, der Tod. Die einen sehen in allem das Geistige, wovon Jung meinte, das sei nur ein anderer Aspekt von Sex, oder Liebe oder Soziales und das scheint keinen zu stören, aber die Freude zu genießen alles zu sexualisieren, scheint viele zu stören. Eine weise Frau brachte mir das bei, in allem den sexuellen Aspekt zu sehen als Weg zur Kreativität. Es gibt in England eine starke Gruppierung der Hexen des Wicca-Ordens, die gerade das betont. Sie meint, die Entzauberung der Welt geht mit ihrer Asexualisierung Hand in Hand. Das meine ich auch.
      Okay, das war mein Wort zum Samstag 😉 ein kurzer Ausflug zur Sexualisierung der Welt.

      gerade habe ich Hanne geantwortet, und dargelegt wo für mich der Sex in Bezug auf die See und den Seefahrern liegt. Ich finde es spannend, was du schreibst und lasse das mal auf mich wirken. Leben ist körperlich und geistig, das eine schwingt ins andere …
      Es ist doch noch spannend, wie wir einerseits von der sexuellen Befreiung schwatzen und andererseits die Prüderie immer mehr zunimmt., die Perversionen allerdings leider auch. Ha ja, was ist nun pervers … ich merke, das sind grosse Themen, an denen wir gerade herum kratzen. Nichts destotrotz: es lebe der Sex, es lebe der freie Geist …

      in diesem Sinne, lets dance, lets make love and think, alles zu seiner Zeit 🙂

      die Antworten haben sich überschnitten.
      Du sprichst ein typisches Phänomen an: Je mehr über Sex gesprochen wird, je weniger wird er praktiziert. War noch zu Freuds Zeiten das Problem genügend sexuelle Befriedigung zu bekommen, so ist heute eher das Problem, dass viele sexmüde sind, keinen Bock auf Sex haben. Da ist die Generation der Eltern, die ihre Sexualität auslebten. Da kann ich nur Hegel mit seinem Konzept des dialektischen Wirkens des Zeitgeistes bemühen zur Erklärung. Für uns war freier Sex revolutionär, für unsere Kinder ist die neue Prüderie letztlich ebenso revolutionär.
      Ich stimme dir zu, Geist und Sex hängen eng zusammen …

      so, nun aber ab in die Wanne mit mir, Samstag ist Badetag und da es schon den ganzen Tag regnet, die Hausarbeit und Reisevorbereitungen voran geschritten sind, kommt nun der entspannte Teil des Tages …

    • so geht es vielen, besonders im Norden, wir hier haben wahrlich mehr als genug, schwitzen ist immer nur für maximal 3 Tage, für die Natur wunderbar, für die Sonnenhungrige etwas schade, besonders jetzt, während der Ferien, aber ich gehe ja bald wieder auf Resen, erst das Elsass und dann in den Süden Frankreichs, irgendwo werde ich noch ein paar Sonnenstrahlen einfangen

      meide den Süden. Ich hörte vorhin von Bloggerfreunden, die in the South of France und Spain waren, dass dort wie in Italien regnerisch kühles Wetter herrscht: Dänemark, Norwegen, Schweden, England und Finnland sind wie die letzten Jahre die europäischen Schönwettergebiete. Wir haben nun schon seit einer Woche vor Ostern wieder ständig Sonnenschein und Hochsommerwetter.

      du hast die Erotik der Seefahrt sooo schön dargestellt, dem ist gar nichts mehr hinzuzufügen.
      Ich gehe jetzt zu einer anderen hoch sexualisierten Veranstaltung: In einer halben Stunde kommen mehrere hundert Harley Davidsons durchs Dorf auf dem Weg zu einem Treffen. Die narzisstische Selbstdarstellung der Fahrer und ihrer brusttätowierten Mitfahrerinnen ist unübertroffen. Also, ich bin dann mal weg.

    • Ich mische mich nicht gerne ein, aber zum Thema Regen…einfach ein paar silberne Bänder mit Glöckchen umbinden, dann mit den Füßen stampfen, Oberkörper hoch und wieder herunterschmeißen, so ca. 2-5 Stunden lang, dann sollte es regnen….Du kannst dabei auch noch unverständlich vor dich hinsingen und Urschreie ausstoßen und wild mit dem Kopf schütteln…das klappt, glaube mir!

    • Ich mache Büroarbeiten, dazwischen googele ich über all die anstehenden Fragen der letzten Monate, dabei komme ich ins Schwitzen….nur 3,5 Tropfen Regen, bissel wenig, hier hat es gleich nach dem Witz ein riesen Gewitter gegeben….
      Mir kommt es ja so vor als ob ich nur mit dem Finger schippen muss und es regnet, so viel habe ich schon beim Tanzen aufgestampft und mit dem Kopf geschüttelt…..

    • Scheinbar klappt irgendwas beim Wolkennavigieren nicht ganz….dann hattet ihr in Bonn also einen Wolkenbruch? Ich stellte mein Auto in den Regen, da spart man die Waschanlage….
      Ja, jetzt geht es via Steuerbüro, Innenstadt..(vielleicht gibt es zur Erweiterung neue Räume für die Schule…), Elektrofirma (neuer Saunaofen muss her…) i r g e n d w a n n ins Ferienhaus. Dort wollen wir Sonne, sonst wächst das Unkraut ja so sehr! Dann gehe ich morgens schwimmen, ein bis zwei Stunden und höre dabei den neuesten Dorfklatsch…

    Also, dass sie Frauen nehmen als Galionsfiguren, wenn sie Meere besegeln und neue Länder entdecken wollen, finde ich nur natürlich.
    Das blaue Kleid erinnert an ein Himmelszelt, aber wo sind die Sterne?
    Beim grünen Kleid hat wohl der Stoff nicht ganz gereicht oder die Farbe….naja, die Milch macht´s…
    Die schön ordentlich zusammengerollten Seile sehen interessant aus.
    Was ist das nur, die Sehnsucht nach Freiheit und gleichzeitig scheinbar Angst vor Bindung?
    Bei Sturm am Mast festbinden…..hatten die dann auch überall Kinder in den Hafen?
    Das sind die Gedankenströme, wenn ich diese wunderschönen Fotos sehe…..
    Da habt ihr ja wieder ganze Arbeit geleistet, genug Themen um tagelang die Gedanken fließen zu lassen!

      das blaue Kleid der Galionsfigur geht auf eine ikonographische Tradition zurück, die du auch ansprichst: Seit der Renaissance ist es Tradition Maria im blauen Himmelsmantel darzustellen. Das ist auch farbsymbolisch naheliegend, denn blau wird als Farbe der Seele gesehen, sie ist eben die Anima.
      Klar hatten die Seemänner Kinder in vielen Häfen. Das war ein Weg, wie sich die Rassen gemischt haben.

    • …die Vorgängerin in der Ballettschule wünschte sich zu ihrem 85. Geburtstag Konzertkarten für Rod Stewart, sie liebte so I´m sailing, mit meinem Bruder tanzte sie Twist….jetzt ist sie 95….sie tanzt immer noch! (nur die Treppen in den Übungsraum sind doof und so langsam merkt sie ihr Alter, sie ist herrlich!)

      Oh je, ja ich glaube schon, dass man bei WP einen Art Profil anlegen kann und dann auch mit Gravatar (Foto) Kommentare und likes (aber nur einmal 🙂 ) geben kann. Meine Freundin Tone betreibt kein Blog und sie hat ein Konto bei WP also geht das. Ich weiß nicht genau wie es geht, nur das es gar nicht einfach war, Tone hat schon in der Tischkante gebissen.
      Ebenso kann man sich mit Twitter, Facebook oder google+ anmelden und kommentieren; d.h man hat dann immer einen Link der zu einen selbst zuführt. Wenn man das möchte. Ohne angemeldet zu sein, kann man kein like it vergeben. Einigen sehen das mit den Like its sehr ernst und nehmen es sehr wichtig; vielleicht befürchtet man eine gewisse ungerechte Handhabung… ? 😉

    • YEEES, I have! 🙂 I have seen each and every one of the Onedin Line episodes back in the Seventies, Gallivanta. It was a big favourite of mine and very many other viewers in Norway too. Thank you so much for mentioning the film, I had quite forgotten! 🙂
      Not only Christian Radich played a great role, also Statsråd Lehmkuhl had a mayor part and Gorch Fock too. Just thinking about the Onedin Line I can hear the music of the opening, the Adagio of Spartacus and Phrygia from the ballet Spartacus by Aram Khachaturian. Have a look at Christian Radich and the other tall ships with full sails:

      Now I look forward to watch the Onedin Line again together with Klausbernd, Siri and Selma. That’s juts the right thing for us in wintertime in front of a roaring fire… 🙂

    • Wie schön von dir zu lesen, Szintilla. Selma und ich sind gerade aus dem Wald gekommen, in Bonn haben wir heute einen richtig tollen Sommertag, nicht zu sonnig und nicht zu heiß. In Fredrikstad sieht es jedoch anders aus, jeden Tag weit über 30°, tropische Nächte (nicht unter 20°) alle schwitzen und stöhnen, wer hätte das gedacht?
      Es freut uns sehr, dass dir unsere Arbeit gefällt, Selma strahlt über ihren süßes Feengesicht und Franco wedelt fröhlich mit dem Schwanz. Gleich werden wir seinem 10. Geburtstag feiern. 🙂 Die liebe Selma bereitet gerade eine Leberwursttorte mit Würstchen, das findet er ganz toll. Als er klein war, gab’s Frankfurter statt Kerzen, jetzt bei der Anzahl, nur kleine Cocktailwürstchen. 🙂

      An old sailing superstition says that whistling on board a sailing ship is thought to encourage the wind strength to increase. This is regularly alluded to in the Aubrey-Maturin books by Patrick O’Brian. A United States Navy saying alluded to a supposition that only homosexuals whistled…

      We are going to The Holy Island of Lindisfarne, Hiking on the John Muir Trail, the a few days in Edinburgh and then we drive and hike the are around Loch Lomond. My first visit to Scotland, I’m all excited and so much looking forward to it. 🙂

      Usually, Mermaids are considered lucky, but not universally. In Trinidad and Tobago, sea-dwelling mer-men “were known to grant a wish, transform mediocrity into genius and confer wealth and power.
      Selma told me, Mermaids appear in British folklore as unlucky omens, both foretelling disaster and provoking it. Several variants of the ballad Sir Patrick Spens depict a mermaid speaking to the doomed ships. In some versions, she tells them they will never see land again; in others, she claims they are near shore, which they are wise enough to know means the same thing. Mermaids can also be a sign of approaching rough weather, and some have been described as monstrous in size, up to 2,000 feet (610 m).
      You see, our Bookfayries read a lot and prepare our next visit to Scotland and Loch Lomond. 😉

      in beautiful Copenhagen 🙂 When I first saw the famous mermaid as a child I was amazed how small she is. In my phantasies she had been much bigger.
      Columbus writes in his log on his journey to America about mermaids. In his times mermaids were real, well, probably they died out like unicorns and dragons 😉

      Oh dear, I’m not sure where all the 13 copies are… There’s one in Solvang, California; Kimballton, Iowa, Piatra Neamţ, Romania, Torrejón de Ardoz (Madrid), Spain; and a half-sized copy in Calgary, Canada.
      The grave of Danish-American entertainer Victor Borge includes a copy as well and the Copenhagen Airport also has a replica of the mermaid along with a statue of Andersen. Our Lille Havfrue is iconic in Denmark, I suppose it’s the most famous object abroad. Or what comes to your mind when you hear Denmark? 🙂 Firstly, secondly… 🙂

      I immediately see Legoland, Tivoli, great designs, (especially furniture, lamps, architecture) and smørrebrød, women with cigars. And I feel a strong wish to visit Grønland! 🙂 I have never been there… 😦

  53. I am late to the party, and what a party it is, with cool sea breezes blowing, gorgeous, curvy ladies, the graphic simplicity of ropes neatly captures, and, not least, intriguing commentary that just goes on and on…
    I hope your weather has cooled down a few notches. We feel warm here with temps just in the low 80’s – Pacific north-westerners are not used to heat. Back in NYC, oh, the heat and humidity we used to endure…but no more! Thanks for this labor of love, the scholarly references, the playfulness, the gorgeous photographs, and the conversations that result!

      It’s still quite hot here, well, not as hot as in Norway, but 23 C still and it’s 18h. But there is light breeze from the North Sea and the light is great, very clear 🙂 The North Sea is so warm that even Siri and I go swimming nearly every day – and we both are kind of wimps 😉

You are right, the exchange goes on and on – we really love this this 🙂 I suppose this is the post with the most commentaries we got this year.   54. Na, das war sicher die erotischste und gleichzeitig augenzwinkerndste Beschreibung, die ich je über Segelboote und Galionsfiguren gelesen habe! Köstlich, auch die eingestreuten Freud‘schen Anklänge oder auch Spitzen in Richtung „Masterchen“. Aber ich habe mich nicht nur amüsiert, sondern auch viel erfahren – und deine Fotos sind wunderschön, Dina! Von den bildschönen Galionsfiguren hätte ich gern welche und wenn ich etwas sammeln würde, dann sie!

      na, das ist ja fein, dass dir unsere Post so gut gefallen hat. Wir können dir sagen, solch eine Galionsfigur hätten wir auch SEHR gerne. Aber da müssten wir schon bei Nacht und Nebel eine absägen, huch, und das bringt sicher bösestes Unglück.

  58. A stunning post! So full of interesting and fascinating information; the ships are fabulous and you give us excellent photography. I hope you don’t mind me asking what camera you work with?
    I once witnessed a few, not many, but maybe 5-7 tall ships coming into a port; it was a very special and majestic place to stay right at very front of the ships, even further out as the figureheads, as they arrived. Immediately I longed to be up there over the water too. Thanks for sharing this!

      Dina uses a Nikon D800 but she will write more about the lenses she uses. We can tell you that’s heavy stuff. We have a special backpack to carry camera and lenses when we are hiking.
      Those ships lure you immediately to sail the seven seas. It’s the seductive power not only of the figureheads.

      as Klausbernd already told you, I use a Nikon D800 and the three so called dreamteam lenses; 14-24mm, 18-70mm and 70-200mm, all 2.8. Heavy stuff, but manageable! 😉

As to whistling on board: if someone whistled on board boat I skippered, my immediate reply was, ” bei mir an Bord pfeift nur der Wind!” Usually my fellow sailors laughed, end joked about me, but the did stop whistling. I must admit, as a sailor I used to be superstistious. I would never, e.g., have left habour on a Frifay 13th. 😉 Another way to get some wind, or a storm, at that, is scratching at the mast of a sailing ship. And then ther’s that time-honoured tradition of giving Neptune the first mouthful from every freshly opened bottle of hard drink. We also used to have a belaying pin ready to hit “Neptune’s green hand” whenever that came on deck in the form of a little wave toi discourgae him from doing that again. 😉

    • Good afternoon, dear Pit,
      here whisteling on board means to attract the wind as well as scatching the mast. To give Neptune the first sip of every hard drink we even do on our small motorboats. But this tradition with the belaying pin to hit “Neptun’s green hand” I didn’t know.
      It would be an interesting topic to write about all the sailor’s traditions and superstitions and trace them back to their origin. Do you know if there is a book about it?
      Here the fishermen are adamant not to take anybody on board who is wearing something green.
      With women and sailing there are drastic changes going on here right now because women are the top sailors since a couple of years now. Mostly women win the big regattas here and actually quite young women. And did you heard of Linda Greenlaw, the most successful swortfish captain who wrote about her life as a femal captain in “The Hungry Sea”. Sebastian Junger mentioned her in “The Perfect Storm”. All this made the superstition vanish that women bring evil on board, at least on our coast. And, of course, not to forget that the first documented Pirate was an Icelandic princess.

      Just a short reply: maybe finding out more about those traditions could become a shared project. Would be interesting, wouldn’t it? I just very superficially googled and looked at the wikipedia article [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sailors%27_superstitions]. Not really much information there. But it does have a list of reference books. That might be a start. I”ve just downloaded the first oen in tat book list in the Kindle edition. For just $ .99 you cabn be much wrong there. I’ll keep you posted once I’ve started reading.

      und was für ein Bilderbuchmorgen: strahlend blauer Himmel, Sonnenschein und noch einen Hauch Kühle in der Luft, genau wie Siri und ich es lieben. Allerdings befürchten wir, dass es heute heiß wird, so werden wir drinnen im Kühlen bleiben und erst abends hinausgehen.
      Ich habe das mit dem Thema “Aberglauben auf See” noch einmal überschlafen und glaube nun, dass es kein geeignetes Blogthema ist, da es schwer mit eigenen Fotos zu illustrieren ist. Unser Blog hat ja das Prinzip, dass Dinas Fotos und der Buchfeentext sich stets bestens ergänzen sollen. Kurz und gut: Ich find’s ein spannendes Thema, auch aus der Sicht der Symbolik, aber mir scheint es leider blogungeeignet zu sein.

    • Hallo Klausbernd,
      stimmt: ist schon bloed wenn das Auto nicht will. Und nicht nur, wenn man auf dem Lande wohnt. Wir wohnen ja durchaus in der Stadt, aber doch 3 Meilen vom Zentrum entfernt, und da ist man nicht mal eben zu Fusz hin. Einkaufen muessen wir schon mit dem Wagen. Bisher waren wir gewohnt, dass wir mit dem alten Camaro immer einen fuer kurze Strecken durchaus nutzbaren Zweitwagen hatten. Aber der steht noch in Karnes City, und bleibt auch vorlaeufig da, mindestens bis wir hier unsere Garage fertig haben. Wir hoffen, dass unser Escape noch eine Zeit durchhaelt, trotz seiner bisher 145.000 Meilen auf dem Tacho. Es war ja ein neues Auto geplant, aber wir muessen wohl noch etwas warten, denn die mit unserem Haus und Grundstueck hier verbundenen Kosten waren doch etwas hoeher als vorher geplant. Garage und Baeume haben so einige $$ verschlungen. Mal sehen, was kommt. Fuer Dich hoffe ich, dass Der Volovo wieder prima faehrt und Dich und Dina problemlos in den Norden bringt, und auch wieder zurueck.

      na, ich wag es ja fast nicht zu sagen, aber zum Glück war nur die Batterie leer. Aber mit niedriger Batterie funktioniert die gesamte Elektronik nicht und so befürchtete ich Schlimmstes. Nun fährt er wieder 🙂
