Do you remember how upset Dina was because she lost her photos on the Holy Island of Lindisfarne? It was soon forgotten as our beloved Master arranged a surprise visit to Hogwarts. Dina almost fell over when she saw the photography permit and Siri was eager to find out if Sirius Black, the godfather of Harry Potter, was named after her. I didn’t help telling her that J.K. Rowling didn’t know her. “She may well read our blog!”, she replied with a triumphant smile on her face.
Fettes College, the Eton of the North, inspired J.K. Rowling for the description of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Wouldn’t you liked to have attended such a school like Harry Potter, Hermine Granger, Ron Weasely and Tony Blair? We have to admit Fettes College is more impressive than our small Fairy School. We really like that Muggles (non-sorcerers) can’t find Hogwarts. We wonder how our beloved Master did – should he be …
The myth that Rowling wrote in a Cafe in front of Fettes is just a myth. Two facts were wrongly combined, first that Hogwarts was inspired by Fettes College and second that Harry Potter texts were written in a Cafe. But this is this little red Cafe “Elephant House” in old town of Edinburgh, far from Fettes College. Last not least Rowling denies having used Fettes College as a model for Hogwarts, but nobody believes her.
Fettes College was founded by William Fettes for giving poor orphans a decent education. It should provide free full board, lodgings and tuition for about 50 boys and the same for some boys for affordable fees. From 1970 girls were accepted too. Today half the students are girls.
The college was built on a hill “to catch as much air and light as possible” by David Bryce in the Scottish Baronial Style with many spirals and turrets and a wealth in pseudo-medieval carvings.
We Bookfayries asked ourselves if it is a rise or fall that Fettes College became that posh. Today the Senior School’s fee is nearly 25.000 GBP/year, but Harry Potter and Tony Blair, as the rumour goes, got sponsored.
“Industria” is the college’s motto and its heraldic animal is the (busy) bee. Well, always be busy like we, Siri and Selma. Do we hear Goethe’s influence here? “Who ever strives with all his might, that man we can redeem”? (from Goethe’s “Faust”). We rather fancy Hogwarts’ motto “Draco dormiens nunquam titillandus”. Don’t even ever think of tickle the sleeping dragon – unless you are Siegfried or a master sorcerer.
England and his war heroes … Motivated by our dear Master we prefer Bert Brecht‘s quote: “Unhappy the country that needs heroes” (from “The Life of Galilei”). Besides this we think that this monument doesn’t fit for the central place of a School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
I, Siri Bookfayrie, will now turn to David Mitchell’s new novel “The Bone Clock”, which our beloved Master called “the Harry Potter for the man of letters” lately. Good bye, I am off and Selma as well.
Love from the dear and clever Bookfayries
Liebe Grüße von euren lieben Buchfeen

I have never read (or watched) anything to do with Harry Potter, so it was very nice to see this article, with the accompanying photos, which as always, are marvellous. I always thought that the HP books would be too childish for me to bother with, though I know many adults who love to escape into them.

Lovely images, as always. As I type the wind is howling outside so it extra nice to gaze on the lovely blue skies in your photos. I have never read any of the Harry Potter books nor seen the films but they are so much part of everyday culture that I am at least familiar with the characters’s names and of course the famous Hogwarts. Weather or not J.K. Rowling based Hogwarts’s on the Eton of the north, Fettes College looks like it could easily be used as a film set for a Harry Potter movie. I hope you are well. Take care.

We are just traveling in Germany’s north. The weather is very changeable, one moment sunshine the next it is raining. But we don’t mind.
Isn’t it amazing how Harry Potter is present in nowadays world? We read some of the books and we have to admit we loved them. But after 3 volumes it’s too much of the same. We admire Rowling’s phantasy. She uses a lot of topoi from fairy tales and mythology like J.R.R. Tolkien.

I am not a reader of Harry Potter novels, but I am intrigued by the notion that Rowling denies what her readers believe they know. If she was raised in this locale or familiar with it in her adult life, she might have subconsciously absorbed the imagery without consciously attempting to apply it to her books’ settings. There is often a divergence between what we see and what we later recall . That can be a useful canvass for fiction writers.

Dear Thorsaurus,
you are right. We see it in our Master’s work of fiction, everything he has seen can be found there. But he he isn’t aware of it. Well, well, the power of subconsciousness …

OMG, Dina, we trace small circles around each other, don’t we… My father was at Fettes before Trin Coll Cam (where I followed).
