Silent Snow
Das Schweigen des Schnees
We Bookfayries miss the snow right now. From our tiny village next the sea we peep at the glorious, silent snow in Norway. Anyone who is slightly familiar with Herbjørg Wassmo’s (comtemporary Norwegian writer) books and film “I am Dina” knows how well suited Alexander Pushkin is to frame Dina’s images 🙂
These were the very first photos our beloved Dina took with her Nikon D200 in Fredrikstad some years ago. We know, they are far from being perfect, but we like to watch them and listen to the things we can’t hear. Do you have a favourite spot where you can absorb the silence? Our most beloved, silent point is even further North, in the Arctic region.
We wish you a happy winter 🙂 🙂
Wir wünschen Euch einen ganz tollen Winter

Beautiful photographs, and they are perfect. My favorite spot also involves snow, up high on a mountain in Telluride, Colorado far away from the other skiers, where I can sit for a minute in seats in the snow. It’s a nice memory!
LikeLiked by 1 person
Dear Elisa,
your seat in the snow sounds great 🙂 Siri and Selma immediately wanted such a seat too, although the highest “mountain” in Norfolk is 103 m high – or should I better write “low”? It’s just around the corner from the North Norfolk coast where we live.
You wouldn’t believe the magic of blogging: yesterday evening we published this post and in the night the winter came. Now it’s beautiful glittering white outside, a little bit freezing and clear sunshine. Well, the snow … We hardly have ever snow here but today we have about 5 mm of snow 😉 well, it looks like icing sugar.
It must be great living near higher mountains.
We wish you a very happy weekend 🙂 and thanks for your kind words. You made Dina smile 🙂

Good morning, dear GP Cox,
funny, we published this wintery blog and winter came 🙂 Today we have a fine winter’s day: sunshine, just a little frost, and no wind.
We suppose it is healing to have such private places in the nature and, as you say, one’s mind can visit them even if you are not there. In a way the resting place lies inside – but it is inspired and shaped by the outside.
Thanks and have a happy weekend.

Good morning, dear Jude,
oh dear, we feel different: For us it’s great fun driving around (and taking pictures) after a snowfall. It’s a special feeling to be the first one driving on a snowy road. When our Master lived in Northern Scotland he always liked driving (with us 🙂 🙂 ) through the mountains when there was lots and lots of snow on the road or even better when the roads were closed. “It’s just a question of the right tires”, as he says.
Lots of love, thank you!
Have a great weekend

Well that is the point isn’t it – the right tyres! And the right vehicle! But yes, I agree that being the first person to step into the snow is the best. Not so nice when it turns to grey slush at the side of the road, or freezes over causing black ice. But then fayries can always fly 😉
Happy weekend all xx

Indeed, driving on snow is fine but on black ice is an art.
When I worked in Finland I exchanged German lessons for driving lessons on frozen lakes. That was a lot of fun, sometimes spinning until you nearly had to puke 😉 But of course that was in the country as well. Country and snow go well together but not city and snow.

All people in the USSR knew that ” His matrilineal great grandfather – Abram Gannibal – was brought over as a slave from what is now Eritrea and had risen to become an aristocrat.[9]” (from Wikipedia). I called him African-Russian poet (my humor) to stress that people never talked about their African heritage if they did not want to get some benefits from it.
BTW, the second best Russian poet Lermontov was a Scot.

Dear Pete,
indeed, it’s funny but in England we heard for the first time about right and wrong snow – actually there seem to exist only wrong snow in England. We didn’t know wrong snow from Finland, Scandinavia, Austria, Germany and Switzerland. But we found out that the English wrong snow is just the normal snow we knew. Well, people are afraid of snow here and therefore snow is wrong. And they are not equipped. Most of the drivers use the wrong tires in winter and have no practise driving in snow. As you say: they are never prepared (and this in the country of the Scouts, what would Baden-Powell have said to that?)
Lots of love from sunny Cley.

Dear Stefano,
we know this stress-problem from our beloved Dina as well. She cannot stop doing always too much (as we see it) and everything more than perfect. Maybe life is like the 4 seasons – a much used metaphore in literature anyhow – and we suppose that autumn is the time to reduce – otherwise you will have problems enjoying the beauties of winter.
That our dear Master sometimes sounds too kind – well, we are surrounded by the highly educated upper middle class neighbours, some still behave like the Victorians 😉 We can assure you our Master writes much cooler in German! We Fayries have, like many Expats, this problem as well, we behave different dependent on the language we use.
Our Master, well, he was a kind of crazy therapist as he liked to work with those people who didn’t need a therapy 😉 all the really disturbed patients he sent to a friend of his – our Master prefered his research about symbolism. But, of course, in the beginning of his professional life – in spring and summer of his lifetime – he had to accept what he got.
All the best

Dear S&S,
Dina’s dedication and perfectionism definitely shows from her work, but don’t think that both you and Master are far behind! 😉
Anyway, I know the feeling as I tend to be the same. I guess I am a bit obsessive-compulsive, but this would be up to Master KB to say 😉
I do not see a problem in writing nicely and cordially, quite the opposite. If you are instead saying that being nice is just a way to pass on pleasantries which do not actually relate to what the writer feels… well, that would be a different story, I guess 😉
Reading your posts I always learn something or feel like slowing down and thinking about whatever concept you Fab Four write about, which I think is a very good think. Yours is definitely the most educational and mentally stimulating blog that I follow. That’s why I like and value the four of you and what you think/write so much.
Finally, after reading how Master sorted his patients, I can only wonder whether he would have kept me or referred me to his friend! 😉
Big hugs to you all! 🙂

Hi, dear Stefano,
a question we constantly ask ourselves as non-native speakers: How to express an emotion in all it’s subtleties in another language. You always have the feeling it’s either too much or too little but never the exact meaning. Anyway we want to write nicely and cordially …
and mean it 🙂
In German we can write nicely and ironic at the same time, we can play with meanings and words, but it’s sheer luck when it works in English. It sounds maybe too big, but we see it like this: In German we quite often write multidimensional, in English onedimensional (maybe it has to do with dialectics and positivism?).
Anyway, have an easy week
with a big HUG

Wonderful girls, it worked for us as well: In Stockholm right now it’s snowing (-4°C). This is the kind of temperature I love.
Yesterday I returned from Karasjok, Norway, a seriously cold place. We had -45°C for almost two days!!
God helg!

oh dear, – 45 degrees … But then the air is amazing clear (and so dry). And we like these changes in perception. You might see 4 suns or just free floating rainbows in the air and what’s far away comes nearer (unfortunately only optical). But we always had problems taking pics when it was under – 30 C. We had to do it with gloves and the next problem the battery drains immediately.
– 4 C is great, a temperature we actually prefer because we get servere problems with flying if we have have to wear too many layers of clothes.
Ha en god helg akso (well a with a circle, sorry, we haven’t activitated Norwegian/Swedish for our keyboard yet)

This post brought a smile — the snow song is a perfect description of the magic of wandering among frost-coated branches! We are mid-winter here in northern MN and woefully lacking in snow – the high school Nordic ski meet today met with freezing rain last night, and had to shorten their pursuit race to a skate race only. I fear this will be a pattern often repeated in years to come given the global warming and climate change patterns we are seeing.

Hi, dear Kat,
oh dear, what a pity.
As we live in a relatively mild cilmate with hardly any frost we cannot see this climate change so clear. But nevertheless last Nov and Dec we had the warmest temperatures ever measured in Norfolk during this periode.
But snow is forecasted and we have a little frost right now. The coldest month here is February anyway.

We sometimes miss a real winter in England. How can people live with such a soft winter version?
We Bookfayries, our beloved Dina and our dear Master like many of our friends love winter most of all seasons. We couldn’t live without snow, icicles, and that clear cold air.
Unfortunately the weather turned last night and now it’s sunny and warm, well, one gets used to it. But it is strange living in a world without a real winter. Something is missing …

A beautiful dreamy collection, Dina! And so timely…we are expecting snow here in NYC tomorrow; always felt it was good luck, in some way. Your photos and especially your question about “a favorite place to absorb silence” makes me think of Carnegie Hall! (I attend many voice and piano recitals there.) The rests = silences, and we all know how important those are! (Mozart: “The music is not in the notes, but in the silence between.”) I have an urge to hear Winterreise right now! Good morningh, dear Jean,
well, Schubert’s “Winterreise” … on one hand appropiate for this time of the year, on the other hand such a sad piece of music and lyrics.
You mention music creating these places for you to enjoy silence. We can well understand this, there has to be sound to be able to enjoy the silencre in between.
Snow was forcasted for our coast as well, but we have spring right now: sunny, no wind, and 4 C.

As it happens, googling reveals a new book that I’m quite eager to read: “Schubert’s Winter Journey: Anatomy of an Obsession,” by tenor Ian Bostridge (not to mention, Willa Cather’s “Lucy Gayheart”). An interesting mix of history/ perspective to deepen one’s appreciation of the song cycle. Let us drink, dearest friend
To my poor wasted youth.
Let us drink from grief – Where’s the glass?
Our hearts at least will be lightened.
Sing me a song of how the bluetit
Quietly lives across the sea.
Sing me a song of how the young girl
Went to fetch water in the morning.
The storm wind covers the sky
Whirling the fleecy snow drifts
Now it howls like a wolf,
Now it is crying, like a lost child.
Let us drink, dearest friend

Dear Sarah,
oh dear, what a question! What does winter mean to us?
Inside: cosyness, roaring open fires, hot saunas, lots of happy reading – we don’t know why, but winter is the time to reflect, to slow down. A kind of time of understanding, a season when you take more time for love, art, and thinking.
Outside: clear skies and crisp air drag you out – everything is clearer and looks nicer and more magic when covered with snow. Snow surpresses all noise and driving on snow and ice is much fun.
We all four have our birthdays in winter. And shall we tell you a BIG, big secret? Dina’s birthday is today!

Here at the coast of North Norfolk we usually have quite a stable climate without much temperature change in the day as in the year. Unfortunately it’s just to mild for snow. In such a climate you don’t feel much of the global warming because nothing much is changing (except the currents of the sea). But as further North you come as more you will notice that the winters have become warmer.
May the real winter arrive at Calgary soon. We noticed that the seasons come later and later in the year, so you have a decent chance getting a real winter.

Dear Rebecca,
seeing these pictures you really feel chilly at once, don’t you?
Photography triggers memory by preserving a historical moment. And it’s interesting, most of us remember their childhood seeing WINTER-pics. It’s obvious that most children really enjoy winter, there is so much to do outside. But as well it is a sign of something we have lost, and it’s not only our youth but the real winters, thanks to global warming. But we suppose you are getting quite some snow in Vancouver, don’t you? And, well, you have been a snow-child anyhow …

Beautiful snows, Dina et al, but I am very happy it is there not here! I do love the newly fallen snow, and also the kind of quiet that only comes during a snowfall, but my bones do not appreciate the cold that comes along with it, hence my move to South Carolina where we had snow last year for the first time in a decade. It was fun while it lasted but we were VERY happy to see it disappear! Thanks for giving us all the snow we need this year!

Dear Tina, good morning,
here all the snow has gone and it’s more like spring, 10 C degrees and sunny.
It’s funny, for me, Klausbernd, it’s different: As older I get as more there is this longing for clarity and silence I both associate with winter and cold temperatures. The reason may be, that as a child I lived quite a lot in Arctic surroundings and found this very, very cosy. And for me, Dina, cold temperatures at wintertime are normal, like minus 20 C and below. Freud would see this as an example that your childhood experiences determine how you perceive and feel later in life.
But maybe there are just two kinds of people: winter-lovers and summer-lovers.
For us winter has not gone yet. February is our most wintery time usually and so we hope for lots of snow to come.
We wish you that spring arrives at yours with lots of sun and warm weather

Hallo Ihr beiden Buchfeen,

Guten Tag, lieber Pit,

Also dann, Ihr Fab Four from Cley, habt eine feine Zeit,
Pit & Mary
P.S.: Ach ja, Vermont waere natuerlich auch fantastisch.

And you wouldn’t believe it, it just started snowing a couple of minutes ago 🙂
You have some snow in NYC right now, haven’t you?

Quite stunning! We don’t get much snow here. None at all so far this year. 😦

Yes, that’s our problem as well. But it just started snowing 🙂 unfortunately it’s too warm, just a bit above freezing. But a little bit of this snow storm from the US east coast will presumably cross Norfolk by the end of this week.
All the best to you and thanks a lot for commenting

Nothing quite like those frost-bitten branches and leaves…incredible photography, and the history behind it too. Nothing quite like the chill and bite of winter to make the indoor activities that much more special ~ Cheers to a Merry Winter ~

Dear Dalo,
for us winter and cosiness are one! Dina is used to many candles in the house from Norway and we read a lot in front of the open fire hearing the roaring winter gales.
Cheers to a Merry Winter 🙂 🙂

When too perfect, dann liebe Gott böse …”

Ulli

Dear Neely
Thank you 🙂
Do you know that no identical snow crystals were found until now? Amazing, that they are all different and so beautiful.
