LATEST NEWS on the Cologne Carnival cancelling the Charlie Hebdo float
We are shocked that Cologne cancelled the Charlie Hebdo float. This self-censuring is just what the jehadists want. Sorry, that we have take on a topic we already blogged about in our Charlie-Hebdo-Blog and which was mentioned in quite some commentaries of our Holocaust-Blog. What can we learn from history is the question.
This would have been the Charlie-Hebdo Float
Das wäre der geplante Wagen gewesen

For us this begging down is a big scandal! We had expected a little more courage to stand up for one’s believes. We can understand self-censorship during the time of fascism but in nowadays Cologne …
But there is always a gleam of hope: 19.000 Germans voted against this decision in the leading German magazine DER SPIEGEL in a just a short time. They have learned 😉
Also doch Hoffnung!

It’s already forecasted that this reactionary decision will not only cause an enormous loss of image (despite all canting assertions) but also cost the city millions. Well, Cologne’s own blame …
Warm greetings from Siri and Selma, very upset

Master’s epilogue
I am red ashamed as somebody born just outside Cologne. Not only that Cologne betrays the holy constitution of the Rhinelanders § 3: “every goes fine as always” but it also follows the road of self-censorship fullfilling the Jihadist aim.
Besides isn’t it alarming that the German police doesn’t have the power to provide security?
Masterchens Nachwort

Dear Pete,
you are so right!
It’s strange after fascism we should have learned that to back down to extremists is the road to desaster. But you wouldn’t believe it, in the German TV news yesterday night (it was top news) all the leaders of the big political parties in Germany (CDU, SPD, Greens) condemned the decision to ban this Charlie-Float. It seems to be actually the “normal folks” wanting to be happy at the Cologne carnival and not be bothered with politics. Well, to withdraw into an “unpolical” attitude helps the extremists and it isn’t unpolitical at all, as the German history teaches us.
Do have snow in Beetley? Here in Cley is was freezing last night but unfortunately we have no snow yet, but at least it is sunny 🙂

Still nothing on BBC about Koln. It is all about Churchill today. I remember seeing that funeral as a boy, from the window of my Mum’s office in the City. I was never a great fan of Churchill though…

Hi, dear Pete,
it was in the news in the US, Japan, and in most European countries. In some countries like France, Norway, Sweden, The Netherlands it was top news, in Germany as well, of course.
Churchill displaces everything in the UK 😉 We are no Churchill fans either and we are still puzzled about his Nobel Price for literature.
Here in Cley it’s quite warm right now. We have brilliant sunshine so we are ventilating our house, all windows open wide 🙂

Thank you very much! This is how I think as well.
We shouldn’t close our eyes and only blog about the birds and the bees, the flowers and fayries (sorry, Siri & Selma!) and show idyllic landscape. We have a political responsibility – well, that’s the lesson from (not only) German history.
But we have to admit we also like an idyllic world 🙂 We try to bring those two together. And thanks again that you like it! We have been a bit insecure about these three rather political blogs shortly follwing each other because it’s off our topic. We were afraid of loosing traffic. But of course this is where self-censorship begins. We became aware we have to watch ourselves too. And, by the way, the traffic hasn’t dropped yet.
Warm greetings from the North Norfolk coast

Thanks for your response as it is well put and well thought out. I think your ideas are great to hear – we must be vigilant, we must exercise freedom of speech and in a responsible way.
I first started blogging in 2000 and I thought I needed to weigh what all these blogs I’ve had over the years should convey. I have lots of interestes, lots of passions, but I don’t think I’ve ever separated them into various blogs. I think that’s awesome if you have others doing the blogging on different sites, but for me, it’s always just me, so I combined everything – faith, art, politics, cycling, photography and of course the astronomy. I’d hate to think the end result is a mish-mash of stuff.
I never worry about traffic since I blog for me and not for ratings. If people like what I have to blog about and join me for the ride – GREAT! – making new friends and reading what others have to say is fantastic! It’s the same with my social networking. I’m grateful for the follows and comments, but essentially I’m there for me, to speak my mind and hopefully bring something to the table.

I often think it must be hard to be German with this heritage hanging over you. Not that that in any way excuses the removal of the float. Just an observation.

Dear Jo,
you are right, it’s not that easy to deal with the German heritage. But we try to find a way. Every German is more or less aware of these dark times in their history and, if he or she wants it or not, he or she has to find a way to deal with it. We think supression of the shadow side is no way out, it rather helps the extremists as we learned from the German history.
All the best.

Good morning, dear Annalena,
you ask who are they afraid of?
There is no evidence of danger as the police and intelligence (what a euphemism!) say. Officially is said it’s the people who don’t want this Charlie-float. That is even more unintelligible as no Mohammed-picture is shown and the float is just centered on the freedom of press.
You are right during the preparation of the carnival parade this float became a lot of praise – worldwide, by the way. And therefore now the shame is so much bigger. Media in the US and all the European countries discuss this decision since yesterday with a clear statement: shame on Cologne.

we agree, this attitude of non-confrotation stands behind the withdrawing of this actually tame Charlie-Hebdo-float. I don’t think that it works well. At least in German history it hasn’t. We very much hope that other floats will sympathise. MUT TUT GUT!

The world needs to stand together against ISIS and those like them … one by one, and one beside one. I think the people Worldwide would stand by Cologne if they were to move forward with the float. I loved the ‘up yours’ reaction the newspaper had when they increased their production of papers the week following the tragic massacres of their staff members. The whole world needs to follow in Charlies’ footsteps, thus removing any ‘rewards’ the lunatics behind the killings might seek, including ‘vengeance for mocking Allah’.

As we said before, self-censorship is helping the wrong side and to see it from this perspective it is very political – but reactionary.

Hr Lieben,
Tzzzz tzzz tzzzzz Herr Kuckelkorn!!
We will see.

Rheinisches Grundgesetz), was gibt’s da zu befürchten?

I’m in two minds about all this whole Charlie Hebdo episode.
One tells me to be cautious and not risk inflaming a contentious issue that might cost more lives AND the other believes in democracy and free speech.
So I stand on the fence in regards to Charlie Hebdo.
Interestingly enough, Charlie Hebdo would be banned in Australia because of our discrimination laws.

Dear Vicki,
Europe has quite a different cultural and political development as Australia. The freedom of speech has one of the basic topics people fought for since the middle ages. This fight shaped our (democratic) culture. To give in would be a betrayal of our basic values, of this what makes Europe European. And for bloggers like us freedom of speech is basic but if we don’t fight for it it will be taken away. That’s the lesson we learned of history: Not doing always helps the extremists and angst is a bad adviser.
Thanks a lot for writing the only critical commentary concerning Charlie Hebdo. For a freedom of speech we always have to listen – or in our case to read – of different ideas.

I don’t mean to be critical per se, Klausbernd, just that I sometimes feel torn between wanting no more bloodshed of innocent people and wanting to publicly defend that democratic right to speak my mind.
I admit I spoke out far to often in my last job and eventually, people who were too afraid to voice their opinion on a subject started asking me to speak for them. I said I couldn’t speak on matters of which I had no knowledge or experience. But if I was in the firing line, I didn’t hesitate to ‘shoot back’ 😀

Dear Dalo,
yes, it’s real!
It’s even more un-understandable as one of the roots of Cologne Carnival are the Roman festival of Saturnalia. Actually it was an early exercise in free speech when the slaves were allowed to play the masters and express everything they want to for one day. Colonia Aggripina (Cologne) was one of the centres where the Saturnilia were wildly celebrated.
We are against any censorship as well. We don’t want to fall back into medieval times or the those horrid times of the Spanish inquisition. After the Age of Enlightenment and the French Revolution free speech is basic for our culture.

Dear Otto,
I agree, the media tend to look at the bad side of events only but there were amazing much people who stood up and declared solidarity world wide. Therefore it is even harder to understand that in Cologne this Charlie-Hebdo fload was banned. And as you see: It’s absolutely harmless.
We wish you a happy week

Guten Morgen, liebe Ulli,

We live in difficult and dark times. Courage fades and anger builds. But, in the end, truth prevails. Sometimes it takes a long, long time. We are the voice of our generation. It is a grave responsibility. May we embrace courage, truth, honour. Thank you, my dear friends, the Fab Four. Hugs coming across the way.

Good evening, dear Rebecca,
we just come from the cinema. We saw “The Imitation Game” (about Allan Turing and Enigma).
We agree, courage fades and angers builds. We feel it’s our responsibility to go against this tendency. Courage, truth, honour are the key qualities as well as humour we suppose. We work on it 🙂 🙂
Thank you 🙂

Liebe Pia,
Don’t worry, be happy 🙂

Wir müssen uns mal was trauen!
