Our beloved Brecht’s list of pleasures looks very similar to our own – but, oh dear, no! We are no copy cats (as Brecht was, but that’s another story). At heart it shares our echo of slowing down, our plea for an idle life, don’t you think? The four of us find in Brecht’s poem from 1954 exactly the things we should be doing to take life more slowly and paradoxically become more alive and aware. We especially like Brecht’s praise of friendliness 🙂 🙂
We wonder what you would list. Will you tell us?

Unsere Fab-Four-Vergnügungsliste würde nicht viel anders aussehen. Und eure?
Nee, wir haben nicht abgeschrieben – wie Brecht es bisweilen tat, aber das ist eine andere Geschichte. Die Brechtsche Liste von 1954  unterstützt bestens, was wir bereits in unseren letzten Blogs propagierten, nämlich die Wichtigkeit des Innehaltens und der Freundlichkeit.

Our bed-picture (sorry, our bed doesn’t always look like this) reminds us on another Brecht quote. It’s from the satirical opera “Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny” (music by Kurt Weill, premiere 1930) “as you make your bed so you must lie on it“. Here the famous recording with Lotte Lenya from 1930.

Bei unserem Bett-Bild (manchmal machen wir sogar unser Bett, ehrlich!) fällt uns gleich noch ein weiteres Zitat “Vom armen BB” ein, nämlich “Wie man sich bettet, so liegt man” aus der satirischen Oper “Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny” (Musik von Kurt Weill, 1930 uraufgeführt). Oben findet ihr die berühmte Aufnahme mit Lotte Lenya von 1930.

We wish you all a relaxing weekend and a happy time in your bed even if some crook will steal one hour tonight.

In diesem Sinne wünschen wir euch ein schönes Wochenende und feines Ausschlafen, obwohl der GSK – der Große Stundenklauer – diese Nacht umgehen wird. Da wird sich so mancher verwundert wie im Kinderlied fragen “Wer hat an der Uhr gedreht?/Ist es wirklich schon so spät?”

  1. Such a pleasant view to look out from the bed room. I cound imagine the view will be fasinating as days change through out the year. I would love to slow down with my mind just a tad just to be aware of what is actually going on.

    • We have to admit that’s not at our home. It’s a view from a special B&B in Scotland. Fortunately we stayed several days there. What was so special besides this view? Do you really want to know? It was situayed just at the fence of nuclear powerstation which you couldn’t see from our huge and cozy room.

  2. I should enlarge that picture and paste it on the wall of our tiny apartment in SOHO, NYC. Or maybe it’d be more effective try to live our lives the way the poem, and your comment, suggest. All to say, thanks for this reminder of how old Bertie is still in our minds, copycat-ing notwithstanding, and that people like him are greatly missed. Happy Saturday.

    • We mentioned Peter Brook in the post above, he and his daughter Irina like BB also very much and brought his plays on stage in Paris. And of course we are his fans. Especially nowadays when Hollywood only presents films based on identification. Brook and Brecht were/are the only ones going in the other non-romantic direction. Siri and Selma asked me if we might write about the romantic style in film and theatre and the role of Brook and Brecht. But that’s maybe too special for a blog. Well, we will see.

    • I really admire and follow Peter Brook, and not just for the fantastic Marat-Sade and Lord of the Flies. I also remember the TV adaptation he did of the Mahabharata, only way to get through such a difficult poem. You’re certainly not the only ones to rather have a non-romantic cinematic experience, at least most of the times we purchase a movie ticket. Looking forward to read your B & B assignment. Best to you all.

  5. Was für ein schöner Beitrag! Ich liebe diese “Vergnügen” von Brecht (wobei ich mich ein kleines bisschen wundere, dass das Duschen bei ihm mit vorkommt, wird ihm doch hin und wieder anderes nachgesagt….) aber am besten gefällt mir immer wieder das freundlich-SEIN! Und um euren Blick beneide ich euch natürlich sehr… Leider kann ich Siri und Selma nicht entdecken, aber wie immer verstecken sie sich sicher geschickt 😉

Das iPad ist für eine Buchfee allein zu schwer, wir beide haben es gerade noch stemmen zu können als Dina und Masterchen kurz weg waren. Eine gelungene Überraschung, findest du nicht?

      Ja, ja der arme BB war nicht gerade für sein Waschen 🛀 bekannt and brachte so manchen zum Naserümpfen. Duschen 🚿 wunderte uns auch. Selma meint ganz praktisch, einfach wegen des gleichen Anlauts wie ‘Dialektik’, worüber sich Siri halb schief lacht. Ihrer Buchfeenmeinung nach ist das ein Insiderwitz, das Duschen dialektisch zu betrachten, von Stand der Antithese aus …
      Nee, das ist nicht in unserem Haus in Cley. Das war ein riesiges wie gemütliches Zimmer in einem tollen B&B in Schottland, das, wie man nicht von unserem Zimmer sehen kann, durch seine spezielle Lage hervorstrahlt. Es liegt nämlich direkt am Zaun eines Nuclear Powerstation, das man aber von den Gast- und Aufenthaltsräumen nicht sieht.
      Uns hat’s gefallen, wie du siehst.

    • Nein, grins, liebe Birgit.. 🙂 Als ich das Gedicht recherchiert habe, bin ich auf deinen tollen Beitrag gestoßen.   8. I am now very jealous of that view from your bedroom! I would never want to leave that room, with so much outside to watch.
    Nice to be reminded of Brecht, as I always enjoyed The Threepenny Opera, with its London setting, and jazzy music.

    • No, no, dear Pete, that’s not our house in Cley; it’s a B&B place in Scotland which we enjoyed for quite a while. In the comments above you can read the whole story. You see, no reason to be jealous.
      We love Brecht’s operas as well and do you know he called this jazzy music of Weill’s ‘misuc’. Typical BB, we would say.

    • Breakfast in bed ist nicht so unbedingt unsere Sache, aber das Pieken der Krümel kennen wir schon. BB und Helenchen waren ja immer äußerst emsig, und das gab’s ja noch das Problem, mit welcher seiner Frauen hätte er denn im Bett frühstücken sollen. Nee, nee, der arme BB❗️

    • Ich denke mal, BB war vollauf damit zufrieden, von irgendeiner seiner Frauen das Frühstück ans Bett serviert zu bekommen. Was sollte er da das Bett mit einer teilen, die ihm doch nur alles weggefuttert hätte. Der brave Mann dacht’ an sich selbst zuerst.

    • Ach, der arme BB war gar kein guter Esser, deswegen war er auch so dünn. Er setze auf seinen Schaukelstuhl die Frauen sagend, in mir habt ihr einen, auf den könnt ihr nicht bauen.

    • Na mit Film hatte er ja keinen großen Erfolg, wie Thomas Mann verachtete er Hollywood, weil er dort nicht so recht ankam. Kennst du seinen Film “Kuhle Wampe oder wem gehört die Welt”?
      Aber er als Bachelor, das passt.

    • Ich auch. Hollywood schrecklich findend. Nein, den Film kenne ich nicht. Aber ich schätze ihn als Dramatiker. Sehr sogar.
      Das Bett-Meer-Foto hat es mir übrigens angetan. Ich habe es mir vorübergehend als Desktophintergrund heruntergeladen, um die Bildkomposition genau zu studieren. Ein Genremaler hätte das nicht besser hinbekommen! Wenn ich mich daran sattgesehen habe, lösche ich es natürlich wieder – nicht ohne vorher eine Bleistiftskizze davon angefertigt und die Fenster mit eigenen Motiven gefüllt zu haben. 🙂

    • Ja, das soll sie auch freuen! 🙂 Ich merke im Eifer des Gefechts (meines Senf-Dazugebens) meist zu spät, dass ich gar nicht “gefällt mir” angeklickt hatte. Soeben nachgeholt. Ursprünglich wollte ich durch die Vergrößerung des Fotos nur feststellen, welche Bücher da auf dem Nachttisch liegen, doch meine Neugier blieb unbefriedigt.

    • Das aufgeschlagene Buch ist sozusagen mein BuchBuch, d.h. darin schreibe ich ein paar Sätze zu jedem Buch, das ich lese (meistens mit Siri auf meiner linken Schulter). Buchlog …
      Das dicke Taschenbuch könnte von Sigrid Undset “Kristin Lavransdatter” sein, da bin ich mir aber nicht sicher. Nach meinem BuchBuch könnte es auch von L. Durrell die Gesamtausgabe des Alexandria Quartett sein. Beide Bücher las ich in der Zeit.
      Neugier befriedigt?
      Und da du ja auch eine Buchliebhaberin zu sein scheinst, hier die genauen Angaben: beides in englischen Tb.-Ausgaben (Picador) und, aber hallo, beides Erstauflagen Tb.

    • Wenn ich alles wüsste, wäre ich Mark Zuckerberg. Sigrid Undset habe ich mal auf Norwegisch gelesen (als ich das noch konnte), Und so ein Buchbuch habe ich in jungen Jahren auch mal geführt, jetzt aber gar keine Lust mehr dazu. Lieber lese ich. 🙂

    • Oh, Kabeljau, lecker super yummy, darauf hätten wir jetzt auch Hunger. Bei uns gibt’s Fasan, der auch lecker sein wird – so hoffen wir schwer. Dina und Masterchen haben den fein zubereitet und etwas eingefroren. Da wissen wir, was wir haben.

      And thanks for this quote from the Galileo play. We think that Brecht’s most famous play “Mother Courage and her children” is already anti-hero and you can find this more or less in all his plays that followed, but never expressed this clear as in the Galileo.

      Schade, dass es nicht gelang, das Bild zu schicken. Wir können hier nur mit blühenden Apfel- und Pflaumenbäumen im Garten aufwarten. Kirschen, glaube ich, wachsen hier nicht so nah am Meer. Ich habe noch nie welche hier an der Küste gesehen. Und wo doch Kirschen mein Lieblingsobst sind.
      Du bist ja auch einige Breitengrade südlicher als wir, ich würde so um die 1000 km schätzen.

      Das hat mich ja nun wirklich interessiert. Du liegst etwa auf 46 Grad N und ich auf etwa 53 Grad N, das sind 7 Breitengrade Unterschied, das wären etwa knapp 800 km, die du südlicher liegst.

  26. Um diesen Ausblick genießen zu können, darf man scheinbar keine Angst vor Atomkraftwerken haben…
    Jetzt könnten 5000 Leute mal eine Aufnahme ihrer Vision vom Schlafzimmerfenster aus machen, dann schauen wir, wo die AkWs sitzen und dann wird wahrscheinlich schnell klar, die Gefahr ist überall….dann hoffe ich mal, dass ihr diesen wunderschönen Ausblick in vollen Zügen genossen habt!

    Das Liedchen kann ich aus voller Kehle mitträllern, wie wahr!
    Der Yoga Lehrer meinte einmal: (er wollte einer blutigen Anfängerin yin/yang erklären, vermute ich mal) Die Frau empfängt und der Mann gibt….Also wirklich, da habe ich aber gelacht, minutenlang, bis die Tränen kamen, echtes Feuerwasser!

    Vision, Creation…..wie viel Schönes könnte daraus entstehen, oder wenigstens Praktisches und Sinnvolles.
    Blöd, dieser Größenwahn, alles was machbar ist auch tun zu müssen. Welche Motivation steckt dahinter?

    Der Haifisch hat nur Zähne….

    Einen schönen Sonntag wünsche ich euch vom Wasserbett aus, Blick nach rechts, rauchende Schlote der Fabrik, zum Glück zieht der Rauch in die andere Richtung, links eine blaue Wand, könnte ich Meerbilder aufhängen, fürs erste….

    • Hi, liebe Pia,
      also das mit dem Atomkraftwerk gleich nebenan, sozusagen next door, fanden wir eher witzig. Da haben wir schon ganz anderes überlebt. Klar, zu Hause hätten wir ungern ein Atomkraftwerk als Nachbarn, aber das ist auch nicht zu befürchten.
      Das ist eine witzige Idee, die uns gefällt: Jeder macht ein Foto von seinem Schlafzimmerfenster aus, aus denen man eine große Collage macht.
      Wir schauen über unseren Vorgarten, der von einer großen Hecke begrenzt wird, hinter der wir skurrile Schrebergärten sehen und paar Bäume am Horizont. Dahinter liegt dann das Meer, das wir von uns aus nicht sehen können, obwohl es unter eine Landmeile nur entfernt ist. Von näher ist sehr abzuraten. Wir sind glücklicherweise auf Flutlevel C, d.h. hier stand noch nie Land unter Wasser, dafür müssen wir dann die Abgesoffenen aufnehmen.
      Na, dann mach’s mal gut.
      Und genieße deine Aussicht über den Marktplatz. Da ist wenigstens etwas los. Hier auf Church Lane kommen ja nur 3 Autos pro Tag vorbei und bei feinem Wetter fröhliche Wandergruppen, die bisweilen nach einem Glas Wasser fragen. Und bei dir kann man vor der Haustür quasi Eis kaufen, das finden besonders Siri und Selma 👯 voll toll❗️😀😊

  27. Schöne Aussicht aus dem noch nicht gemachten Bett 🙂 Aber die Nachbarschaft zu einem Atomkraftwerk würde mein Wohlempfinden doch etwas trüben. Nichts desto trotz, ich wünsche den Fab Four ein schönes Osterfest, weiterhin schöne Blogideen, Bilder und Worte aus eurer Feder und eurer Kamera und Feenstaub sonder Zahl. Macht es gut.

      Danke❗️och, für eine Woche hat uns das nicht gestört, da alles andere so ideal war. Aber ich sagte ja schon, hier bei uns in Cley hätte ich weder gern ein Atomkraftwerk als Nachbar noch würde ich Fracking begrüßen. Glücklicherweise haben wir beides nicht zu befürchten.

      Oben am Jesuitenkloster hat man auch eine schöne Aussicht über die Stadt.

      nee, der GSK war schon okay – we survived 😉 hibernated staying in …
      Wow, ihr habt ja Hochsommer. Wir hatten es heute sonnig und 22 Grad C, du weißt ja, wärmer lieben wir es eigentlich nicht, okay ein wenig vielleicht, aber bei 25 Grad C liegt unsere absolute Grenze.
      Aber weißt du, was uns Masterchen erzählte: Er arbeitete ja ein Jahr im Süden Griechenlands und bei der Hitze dort wurde er völlig faul, allerdings auch etwas depressiv. Das gab sich jedoch sogleich, als er zur Erholung im Winter nach Stockholm fuhr. Wie kannst du denn diese Hitze ertragen? Du bist doch Rheinländer und kein Texaner …

      Allerdings muss ich auch darüber innerlich kichern, wenn meine very English Nachbarn, jedes sonnige Wetter mit Temperaturen über 25 Grad C als “schlechtes Wetter” bezeichnen, bei dem man nicht vor die Türe treten kann.

    • BB was both: an intellectual (what I like) and somebody who liked to play like a child. His directing was coined by the sudden ideas of his players and his. Very interesting and sensual are his poems, especially those he wrote in Svendborg/Danmark and those he wrote between 54 and 56 (in Buckow/Brandenburg). Did you read through his working journals? He is full of ideas like a child. But I prefer his theoretical writings about acting and the epic theater. I don`t know if you read Hegel. BB’s journals are the best and playful introduction in Hegel’s philosophy and of course in the discussion about alienation.
      Anyway, you see, I like Brecht and I have to admit I wrote my thesis and a scientific book about Brecht’s lyrics.
      So I hope I can change the image of Brecht – a least a little bit

  32. Danke für das wundervolle Brecht-Gedicht. Ich kenne nicht viel von Brecht, und ich kann mit seinen Werken nicht so viel anfangen. Ganz anders mit diesem wunderbaren Gedicht!!! Sehr schön und muntermachend, wenn es denn der Blick aus dem Fenster nicht tut, der wirklich atemberaubend schön ist.

    • Ach weißt du, die meisten kennen ja nur Brechts Stücke oder seine hochintellektuellen Schriften zum Theater und Arbeitsjournale, aber seine Gedichte sind weitgehend unbekannt. Er schrieb wunderbare Gedichte, auch besonders Liebesgedichte. Ich glaube, ich muss mal hier eine Imageaufbesserungskampagne für den armen BB starten.

    • Dear Hjerter,

      Bertolt Brecht and Selma (! 🙂 ) Lagerlöf met in the 20th and Brecht copied from Gösta Berling and I suppose from other works as well (Abrahamson f.e.). It’s amazing that obviously Brecht breached copyrights quite often, but he himself and his community of heirs watching Brecht’s copyright like the holy grail.

      Wow, hier stürmt es gerade bei feinstem Sonnenschein, so dass Dina und ich unsere Kleinfeinfeen Siri und Selma anbinden mussten, dass sie nicht weggeweht werden. Aber es ist ein warmer Sturm, der jedoch in Böen unser Haus wackeln lässt.

    • In der Nähe von Aachen, im Westen Deutschlands. Es muss schön sein, am Meer zu leben. Wenn ich das Meer besuchen möchte, fahre ich 200 km. Ich lasse mich immer gerne einladen, der Ruf klingt oft bis hierher.

    • Manchmal komme ich noch durch diese Gegend, wenn ich von Hoek aus auf den Kontinent fahre, allerdings sehr, sehr selten. Und wenn’s dann eine PKW Maut gibt, werde ich wohl wie meine Nachbarn hier gar nicht mehr Deutschland besuchen. Die Niederlande sind doch auch sehr schön.

    • No, no, dear Stefano,
      that’s not the view from our bedroom window in Cley. From there we see our front garden and the eccentric allotments and some trees at horizon. That was the view from some B&B place where Masterchen read BB’s 😉 poems to us. It’s in lovely Scotland.
      A big HUG and enjoy the Easter holidays.
      Here is quite a wind so we have to bind a string around Siri and Selma that our dear Bookfayries don’t get blown about.

    • Es war ganz eigenartig, wie sich das Publkum von dieser Form des Balletts verabschiedet hat, romantische Szenerie, theatralisches Gestikulieren, altmodische Kostümierung, dabei sehnte man sich danach, immer nur dieser moderne, unverständliche Mist, den sie da sonst tanzen…
      ..und dann ist man doch wieder fasziniert von dieser “Weißen Welt” im 2. Akt, von der Welt der Herrscherin Myrthe…
      Neben uns saß ein Mann, der alle Rollen früher getanzt hat, für ganz wenig Geld, sie reisten mit einem klapprigen Bus, im Gepäck: Buchweizengrüze und Wodka….früher eben…
      Die Nichtidentifikation und gleichzeitig das Einfühlen, war das ein Abend mal wieder!

    • Ja, herzlich lieben Dank! 🙂
      Wir repräsentieren im Grunde auch die beiden Seiten: die liebe Dina und Selmalein sind die Romantiker der Fab Four, Masterchen und Sirilein eher die Postmodernen. Das zeigt sich bei uns gut beim Krimigucken: Masterchen und Sirilein verschwinden gleich, wenn die Schauspieler vorzugeben versuchen, dass es sich um eine Abbildung der Realität handelt, die sich, was natürlich völlig naiv ist, mit ihrer Rolle a la Lee Strassberg identifizieren. Sie lieben es, wenn die Schauspieler etwas neben sich stehen und augenzwinkernd zeigen, dass sie spielen.
      Nun schreiben hier eben Masterchen und Sirilein, die auch Herz-Schmerz und Identifikation mit der Rolle als verlogen empfinden. Und übrigens diese postmoderne Einstellung, dass jedes Theaterstück, jeder Film, jedes Ballett ein Teil der entsprechenden Kunst ist, also virtuell, muss ja keineswegs unverständlich sein. Brecht zeigte ja, wieviel Unterhaltungswert solche Stücke haben können, z.B. Dreigroschenoper, Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagony, Der gute Mensch von Sezuan etc. Wir lieben ja die Schilder, die Brecht in seinem Theater aufstellte mit der Aufforderung “Glotz nicht so romantisch!”
      Dir und den Kiddies auch viele bunte Eier!

  41. A room with a view, even if you write it isn’t what we think it is…The list is interesting, and I can agree with and recognize everything – except swimming. We have no pool in the vicinity and we do not live by the sea or a lake…And, we have no bathtub (which I very much would have liked to have). I can see in the comments that Brecht was not the way I had imagined him…thank you for making me feel better and wiser about him… Great Easter Holidays to you all Fab Four!

    • Dear Leya,
      Brecht was for me really revolutionary in his theories and practise of the theatre. The basis of the epic theatre was de-identification. A very postmodern idea: the players show that they are playing a role and the viewers should watch in a distanced way. He had signs in his theatre saying: “Don’t gaze that romantically!” (I like it!). That was and still is quite opposite to the Hollywood idea following the Lee Strassberg school of method acting based on identification. Brecht was for me one of the first ones who showed that art is not a reflection of real everyday life but it is first of all a part of the world of art. The genius of Brecht was that although this is quite intellectual (and BB was a classical German intellectual of his time) his plays like the Beggar’s Opera, Mahagonny etc. were highly entertaining. And he wrote beautiful poems. Of course Brecht was a communist but I admire his interpretation of Hegel and especially how he understood the term of alianation by Marx.

  44. A nice cup of black coffee and a view of water or mountains would keep be happy the whole day ~ nothing quite like a day of contemplation.
    And this I take advantage of every time I get…so again, it made me smile to read above “…take life more slowly and paradoxically become more alive and aware” as that is exactly the reason why there is nothing better than…nothing 🙂

  46. I should make Brecht’s words mine as well. They say pretty how I wish I could live my life – and sometimes manage to. What’s more I love that bedroom and the gorgeous view. I shall one day find me a place with such a bedroom…

  48. Hallo Ihr Lieben,
    es wäre ja sehr einladend, mich einfach wieder ins Bett zu verziehen und von da aus – unser Schlafzimmer hier im Apartment unserer Freunde in Rockport/Fulton ist im ersten Stock mit einem schünen Blick über die Bucht zwischen dem Festland und dem vorgelagerten San Jose Island – einfach die Aussicht zu genießen, aber ich bin ja u.A. auch zur Körperertüchtigung hier und deswegen werde ich mich, da es aufzuklaren scheint, wohl gleich auf’s Rad schwingen und ein paar Meilen strampeln.
    Macht’s gut im anderen kleinen Dorf am großen Meer,
