The best thing one can do when it’s raining is to let it rain
Siri’s & Selma’s Bookfayrie-wisdom
“Rain, nothing but rain“, wrote Dina, Siri and Selma from the summer house in the Norwegian skjærgård a while ago. What about you, do you like rain?
Here in Cley it started raining as well, but with periods of sunshine in between. So we enjoyed many rainbows and this surreal light when the the sun is shining through a gap in the grey clouds like on old paintings.
It’s remarkable how the English deal with rain:
My neighbour Tim invited his friends for a grill party in his garden. Just as the steaks were sizzling on the grill quite a rain started. This was the first noteworthy rain for many month, which was welcomed with rejoicing and a toast of the host at which Tim emphasised this “good for the garden” many times. Then everybody vanished. For me as a wimp it was clear they have gone inside. But far from it! They came back in their Barbour Jacketts and some in Wellies as well. Meanwhile Tim had opened a big umbrella with the advertisement for „The Vicar’s Ruin“, the best locally brewed beer last year. The party went on happily with a mild gossiping about the absent neighbours as it would be a summernight’s dream. Nobody minded that the rain wasn’t exactly a flavour enhancer and nobody even thought of disappearing inside.
I am always astonished how weatherproof the English are. One not only conquers colonies that way but explores the North as well. Only the Norwegians seem to be more heroical – or?
We have exclusive shops in England where you can buy handmade umbrellas. Who thinks himself being the cat’s whiskers owns such an umbrella which costs up to 750 GBP. You would think if you spent that much money for an umbrella you will need it often. You are miles out! England is much drier than Germany. Who unfortunately lives in Freiburg/Br. or Cologne experiences much more rain than we do and London is one of driest European cities. But the weather is top favourite of the English. If you want to start a conversion begin with a remark about the weather. „Lovely day, isn’t it“ is always a conversation opener even if it rains – as you know now “that’s good for the garden.“

Another kind of rain: our dear friend and blogger Pit has just experienced a deluge in Texas. Luckily enough he doesn’t got flooded.

Guten Morgen, liebe Susanne,

Let it rain, let it rain.. just as it is, with much ferocity, this morning. Some very interesting statistics on rain and cities. I wonder why therefore London has this reputation for rain. A super post as always from the Fab Four of Cley! Have a wonderful week, whatever the weather! 🙂

Good morning, dear Chillbrook,
it’s actually raining, well rather drizzeling, here this morning, but during the night we had quite some decent rain which filled all our water butts.
We suppose London’s reputation for being a wet city has two reasons
1. in London the rain is spread more or less equally over the whole year with the effect that the summer tourists are likely to experience some rain, whereas in their countries it doesn’t rain in summer but quite a lot during the rest of the year
2. in criminal fiction London is indeed a rainy or foggy place which adds to the atmosphere
Actually these are Siri’s and Selma’s ideas but we guess they are right like Bookfayries always are 😉
Thanks a lot and enjoy the rain

As always, you manage to find something delightful in words and pictures, even when it is about the ‘hated rain’. I am English of course, but I do not ‘brave’ rain, I just endure it. Perhaps I should go and live in a desert? As I type, rain is hitting the window in Beetley. Good for the garden, needed for the fields, I just don’t care. It is June, and I want a little summer. Please.

But we love a real dry and sunny summer as well. Siri and Selma talked to their friends the weather fairies and they promised that a real summer will come soon. And they just told them that our friend Pete needs sun desperately. – Just wait and see …

Love your comment about the English seeming to be weatherproof. ‘Mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun’ and ‘midday sun’, especially in the colonial British Empire, was weather indeed. Sometimes it is easy to forget that East Anglia is the driest part of England, and probably one of the driest parts of northern Europe. At least our weathermen have something to talk about. I pity the TV weatherman in Saudi Arabia: ‘Tomorrow will be very hot. Of course’ – not much scope for nuance there.
Greetings from drizzly Norwich, Laurence.

Good morning, dear Laurence,
it’s drizzling in Cley as well but clearing in the north above the sea. So there is hope as the wind blows from this direction.
Actually we like this changing weather here, weather like in Saudi Arabia is boring, isn’t it?
Siri studied the weather statistics of Europe for this article and found out that East Anglia is indeed the driest part of northern Europe, so we cannot complain.
So we are sure that the sun will come out soon again, we actually see some blue patches in sky already 🙂 and the drizzle has stopped.
Greetings from the coast (actually we will go to Norwich for shopping today – oh dear, our Master hates shopping).

It’s never too late 😉

Guten Abend, liebe Claudia,

Dear Gallivanta,
both the English as the Norwegians are trained to be weather proofed and therefore they were fit for the Antarctic and Arctic expeditions. They had this tradition going North and later South as whalers because they could cope with grim weather. We are always astonished seeing men in T-Shirts showing their tattoos when we wear our warm jacketts and when ladies in a short shirt and a light blouse walk along the beach when we are happily wearing our Barbour Jacketts – and they don’t even have goose pimpels.
Thank you for commenting and all the best

the rain has just stopped here. It’s quite windy now which brought the sun out again.
Well, our dear Master’s earring is a present from our beloved Dina. She was quite often in the Pirate’s Paradies, in Key West/Florida. There is a famous shop ‘Pat Croce’s Pirate’s Soul’ which sells books and accessories connecting to pirates. This earring is a classic pirate’s earring, a shark tooth set in silver. Our Master loves it and wears it when sailing out to the sea.
And now good news the sun is out again, the clouds are blown away, and the temperature is rising. We send the sunshine over to you as well, Siri and Selma are already blowing all the cloud away for you too.

Good afternoon, dear GP Cox,
it’s funny we just mentioned Florida in our commentary above.
East Anglia, where we are living, was always quite dry but with the climate change it seems to get drier and drier every year. This year we only had 66% of the rain we had last year until June 1st. And last year it was even more dry than the year before. Some years ago we had no problems with our garden, when we had to water it our water butts provided more water than we needed, but now we are getting trouble watering our garden as our water butts are empty most of the time so that we use our bath water but we run out of water still.
But anyway, last night we had a decent rain filling all our butts and watering our garden thoroughly 🙂
Thanks and have a happy week

Rain is quite simply awesome. It can caress the leaves on our trees, and can bend tree branches into submission. It can gently stroke our exposed skin, and can drench us in seconds. It can float our boats, and can sink them. It can be a short visit by many raindrops, or a prolonged soaking visit. It can trigger rainbows ………….. nothing else can do that!
In a climate which is guaranteed a lot of snow, much of which constantly needs to be shoveled on a regular basis, rain can be celebrated ……… it will generally clear itself from our paths and driveways! Just gotta luv rain! 🙂

At least here in Cornwall the rain has been warm! Hoping for some sunshine for the rest of the week though I am sure Selma and Siri have had fun being raindrop fayries for a change 😀

Dear Jude,
Siri and Selma love to play raindrop fayries very much, They were a bit disappointed that the sun is shining again, but they told me a secret: they love the sun as well. It seems to be that they like every weather, but they have most fun jumping into puddles.
We have very, very nice weather here in Norfolk right now, real summer. We hope you got your dose of sunshine as well. Siri and Selma wanted to make that clear with the wind fairies, their cusins.
Lots of lovely sunshine for you

Hallo Ihr Fabulous Four,

Guten Abend, lieber Pit,

You write about the weatherproof Englishmen and -women. Of course Bergen also has its share of die-hard fanatics. I remember my grandmother who was a real “bergenser” as we say; after two days of sunshine she started to complain and said something of the fact, that it’s about time for the rain to begin again. I am not quite there… This is a lovely post, by the way – even when it’s in a way a praise to rain!

A wonderful post, beautifully illustrated (excellent photography). It’s always good to get a different perspective on our English quirks. We seldom have satisfactory weather in England – it’s either too hot or too cold; too wet or there is a hosepipe ban; too windy and trees fall down and disrupt power supplies etc. Yes, we have plenty to talk about!

we love the light summer rain. Rain with strong winds we only love when sitting in our conservatory and watch the trees in our garden. As we live next the sea an umbrella is useless here because it nearly always too windy to hold it. You end up like the flying Robert 😉

Guten Tag, liebe Martina,

Hello, Fab Four! Why would anyone wish for the rain to come another day? One, it makes for gorgeous photographs (yours are exquisite; and we especially love the portrait of the handmade-umbrella owner, sans handmade umbrella, it seems). Two, rain washes away (temporarily) the incredible amounts of pollen we are experiencing here, ugh!
And three, it’s good for the garden (if you’re lucky enough to have one). About umbrellas… we tend to leave them in taxi cabs. All the time. So the cheapest only for us! That means $3 bodega umbrellas, for which the following theory has proven true: The number of times a bodega umbrella opens = the number of dollars you paid for it. Then it breaks. But you don’t care, because you’ve lost it by then… NYC umbrella karma. Thanks for this beautiful post!!! We hope you have a lovely weekend, rain or shine. Jean, Alex, Kuno, Floyd and Isadora

what a great commentary, thanks a lot.
Umbrellas can’t be used here most of the time because it’s too windy. They either break or you would fly away with them, well, only with the very strong ones. Siri just mentioned that umbrellas are more “a city thing”, we have our wellies and Barbour Jackets hereand sometimes even funny rain hats.
But now it’s dry again but we love that rain is forecasted for tomorrow. We will see…
With lots of love to you in NYC

Of course as my mother would tell you, we in Britain have weather, with all that four seasons in a day stuff, and the rest of the world has a climate – something to do with being an island stuck in the path of the gulf stream – it explains the other past-time much enjoyed by the British, apart for weather, and that is moaning. If the best you can do is moan you don’t have revolutions.

Thank you for your response. Here in Toronto the weather is not boring at all. It changes like woman mood. Yesterday morning we had rain, thunderstorm and heavy dark clouds. Then in couple hours sun came back to the blue sky. In the evening we had again light shower and rainbow in the sky. It is only matter of time. If we have bad weather just do not panic and wait a little bit in a moment everything is changed.
Have a nice sunny day!

your weather seems to be like here, only that we have to fight with drafts. But sunshine, strongs winds, clouds and a blue sky change quite often within a morning.
Today we have one minute sunshine the next grey clouds, one minute it’s warm the next it’s rather cold.
