We, the Bookfayries, are quite dizzy counting all the islands of the archipelago. There are so many facts and statistics about Norway but most mind blowing is, that we have about 150.000 islands. Most of these are situated off the cliffy west coast of Norway. But we, the Bookfayries with our beloved Dina are just sailing the waters of the east coast through this sunny labyrinth of islands outside Fredrikstad towards Sweden.  

Wir Buchfeen sind ganz schwindelig vom Zählen der Schären und Inseln. Es gibt sooo viele beeindruckende Daten, Fakten und Zahlen über Norwegen, aber die erstaunlichste Sache ist die: Es gibt ungefähr 150.000 Inseln. Die meisten liegen an der zerklüfteten Westküste Norwegens. Wir, die Keinfeinfeen und Dina, befinden uns allerdings gerade auf dem Wasser der Ostküste und segeln durch die sonnige Schärenlandschaft in Richtung Schweden.

In Norway’s south the Norwegians like to spend their holidays as we Bookfayries.

Im Süden Norwegens machen die Einheimischen und wir Buchfeen Urlaub.

The Norwegian coast boasts the best climate in Norway south of the fjords and the mountains. Here it shows a unique scenery, characterised by small white or red painted wooden towns and villages and thousands of small islands, islets and skerries just off the coast. Fortunately this region hasn’t been been discovered by the vast majority of foreigners yet (actually we shouldn’t blog about it).

Der Süden Norwegens weist nicht nur das tollste Klima des Landes auf, sondern auch eine einzigartige Kulisse, die von kleinen weißen und roten Häusern der Städte und Dörfer geprägt wird und den tausenden kleiner Inseln. Glücklicherweise wurde diese Gegend noch nicht von ausländischen Touristen entdeckt (“Gaaaanz falsch, darüber zu bloggen!” meint Masterchen).

Well, how do you like this place? Imagine running a light house – but they are all fully automated today, no more lighthouse keepers. They actually vanished at the beginning of the 20th c., only a very few are left in Galicia, Brittany and Istria.

Na, wie gefällt es euch hier? Stellt euch vor, so einen Leuchtturm zu betreiben – aber das sind natürlich Hirngespinste, denn alle Leuchttürme dieser Küste sind voll automatisiert. Leuchtturmwärter gehören der Vergangenheit an, eigentlich starben sie zu Beginn des 20. Jh. aus, wenn es auch noch einzelne in Galicien, der Bretagne und Istrien gibt.

Here our beloved Dina spend the summers of her childhood days and not only then, this year we enjoyed her family’s summer house again.

Hier verbrachte unsere geliebte Dina als Kind ihre Sommerferien. Sie kam immer wieder zurück. So genossen wir das Sommerhouse ihre Familie auch dieses Jahr.

Do you know what this archipelago is like? It consists of small rocky islands which were formed like the fjords during the iceage. The glaciers of the Pleistocene, which ended 10.000 years ago, ground these rocks of the islands quite even. This was discovered by the Swiss geologist Louis Agassiz not before the 19th c. His theory of iceages was laughed at by many scientist among them Goethe. The then bestselling German author Wilhelm Bölsche asked not before 1907 why that was. He supposed that the idea of an iceage produces a so called “Volksangst” (people’s fear) presuming a doomsday was threating with the come back of the ice.    

Wisst ihr überhaupt was Schären sind? Sie sind kleinere Felseninsel, die wie die Fjorde in der Eiszeit entstanden. Die Gletscher der Eiszeiten des Pleistozäns, das vor etwa 10.000 Jahren endete, schliffen die Felsen der Schären fein blank. Das fand erst im 19. Jh. der Schweizer Louis Agassiz heraus, der wegen seiner Eiszeittheorie von Goethe und vielen anderen Wissenschaftlern verlacht wurde. Warum das war, fragte sich erst 1907 der damals populäre Buchautor Wilhelm Bölsche und meinte, dass die Vorstellungen einer Eiszeit eine „Volksangst“ hervorrufen würde, dass nämlich eine Art Untergang der bekannten Welt durch wiederkehrendes Eis drohe.

But today we fear much more global warming than the end of our known world by cold as at the beginning of the 20th c. Anyway these island of the archipelago were formed by “god’s big plough” – an expression Agassiz used for the flowing glaciers. We Bookfayries are astonished how similar many of these islands look like the sea dwellers. “Don’t they look like the backs of whales?“, we asked our dear Dina, who is stearing our boat.  

Wie dem auch sei, heute befürchten wir im Gegensatz zu Beginn des 20. Jh. eher die Erwärmung als den Kältetod der Erde. Auf jeden Fall entstand die Form der Schären durch „die große Pflugschar Gottes“ wie Agassiz das fließende Gletschereis nannte. Uns verblüffen immer wieder die gleichen Formen vieler dieser Inseln mit denen der Meeresbewohner. „Sehen sie nicht häufig wie die Buckel der Wale aus?“, fragen wir die liebe Dina, die kühn am Ruder steht.

Seht ihr, was wir sehen? 

The islands of the archipelago are of different sizes. Only 2000 are inhabited like Hvaler, a group of islands we blogged quite often about. The most famous islands are the Vesterålen and Lofoten far up north but there we don’t dare to sail because of the often rough seas. The Lofoten are the ‘destination of desire’ of many lovers of the North like us. There up North the great novel “Dina” by Herbjørg Wassmo was well filmed.

Die Schären sind unterschiedlich groß. Nur etwa 2000 sind bewohnt. Hvaler, einer Inselgruppe im Schärengürtel, von der wir euch schon viele Bilder zeigten, ist zum Beispiel bewohnt. Aber die berühmtesten bewohnten Inselgruppen sind die viel weiter nördlichen Lofoten, das Traumreiseziel vieler Nordlandfans wie uns, und die Vesterålen, 300km nördlich des Polarkreises gelegen. Aber da trauen wir uns nicht zu segeln, da ist es für uns Buchfeen zu rau. Dort im hohen Norden wurde der lesenswerte Roman „Dina“ von Herbjørg Wassmo erstaunlich gut verfilmt, schon allein deswegen würden wir uns die Gegend schon gerne einmal anschauen.

Those small islands are our much liked smultronställe. That’s the Swedish expression for a special and secret place named after the smultron the wild strawberries which you cannot by in shops but you to pick yourself. Ingmar Bergman hints at this meaning with his film “Wild Strawberries” (orginal titel: Smultronstället). You see, Norway and Sweden are places for romantics, for these folks who like to be alone in nature. They are places reminding you on an easy childhood full of adventures in the nature like in the books of Astrid Lindgren.

Die kleine felsige Inseln sind  eine beliebte smultronställe. So nennen die Schweden besondere Orte, die nicht jeder kennt – benannt nach den smultron, den saftigen Walderdbeeren, die man nicht im Geschäft kaufen kann, sondern selber suchen muss. Ingmar Bergman spielt darauf in seinen Film “Wilde Erdbeeren” (Smultronstället) an. Ja, ihr seht, Norwegen und  Schweden sind Reiseländer für Romantiker, für solche, die mit sich und der Natur alleine sein können, sie sind auch Länder der Sehnsucht nach Kindertagen wie sie Astrid Lindgren in ihren Jugendromanen beschreibt, eben unbeschwertes Sommervergnügen in freier Natur.

Now we are approaching Strömstad after our sail from Fredrikstad through the archipelago. There Dina quotes the Swedish proverb “A life without love is like a year without summer“.

Nach unserer Fahrt von Fredrikstad durch die Schären kommen wir gleich in Strömstad an, als Dina das schöne schwedische Sprichwort “Ein Leben ohne Liebe ist wie ein Jahr ohne Sommer” zitiert.

    • Unfortunately we don’t live there but Dina is born there and stayed in Fredrikstad until she went to university. We are living most of the time in another beautiful part of Europe: the North Norfolk coast in East Anglia.

    boating, the skerry islands and the sea…all these elements are part of the Norwegian way of life in summer, so well captured. By the way, I hope you girls are always wearing your life jackets!
    Today we are expecting a group of kayaking people in Longyearbyen. The weather is perfect, almost like yours; sunny and warm (18°!). Next week my artic summer comes to an end, time to go back to Weimar.

  7. Euer Beitrag bringt richtiges Sommerfeeling. Meine ersten Schären habe ich an der schwedischen Westküste gesehen und war davon absolut bezaubert. Norwegens Südküste mit all ihren Schären finde ich demzufolge auch wahnsinnig attraktiv. Besonders schön fand ich Lillesand. Hach ja. Da stimmte auch das Wetter. Es war herrlich sommerlich. Vielen Dank für den schönen Beitrag, der sogleich mein Fernweh neu entfacht hat.

    • We visited the Lafoten Islands on our way down from Nordkapp and it was very beautiful, but busy. You are so right about the undiscovered Swedish archipelago – we found one just above Goteborg when we were looking for somewhere to park our motorhome overnight. We crossed the Tjorn bridge and liked it so much, we stayed for two nights. We were really lucky as there was a harbour festival in Skarhamn and we goggled at the cars of the Ford Mustang Club of Sweden. Could have spent a week there easily, but we will go back.

  12. It looks idyllic – what a wonderful place to spend the summer. I can see myself there, in a little rorbuer by the water, eating fish, drinking beer and crafting the words of the ‘cult novel’ I will one day write.

      oh dear, oh dear I stayed the whole of June and most of July at home in Cley next the Sea at the North Norfolk coast. We had brilliant weather, sunny, rather hot (for here, about 25 C) and dry.   16. Your post on islands, and a summer house on a fjord, brings memories of Norway flooding back. My great uncle had a summer house in Son on Oslofjord, which I visited when I was ten years old, and again forty years later. I write about it on my blog in a post called “Reflections in Fjord”. And it wasn’t so long ago I lived for a short while on the small island of Værøy at the southern tip of the Lofotens. I arrived there after meeting some members of my grandfather’s family still living in Hammerfest.

    Also on an island, Hammerfest used to be the most northern town in the world, and there are a few families with my mother’s maiden name, Planting, still living there. Apart from two more in Oslo – both related to me – and a sprinkling about the rest of Norway, they are among the only ones left in Norway with the name. Planting is rare surname in Scandinavia which dates back hundreds of years.

    I have also written about my stay on Værøy on my blog. Anyone at all interested can soon find it by tapping in the title of the post with my name.

      thank you very, very much for your interesting commentary.
      That’s a dream of ours as well to live for a while on the Lofoten islands. And Hammerfest, wow, we have never been there as we always went from Tromso to Longyearbyen when we went up North.
      So you know Norway quite well but if we understand it right you live in Spain right now. Well, we don’t in Norway any longer but in Norfolk/East Anglia and in the Rhineland in Germany.

  17. Ich stimme Masterchen zu, ggganz falsch darüber zu bloggen 😉 nein, nicht wirklich, denn ich habe ja meine Freude an eurem Artikel, besonders an den Bildern! Und doch denke ich immer wieder bei reiseberichten oder Filmen oder Büchern, wenn es heißt, dass hier einsames, fast unentdecktes Land sei, fern vom Touristenrummel, dass dies nun, nach den Berichten, auch bald vorbei sein wird …
    die Schären als Geheimtipp, wie gut, dass die meisten denken, dass ihnen Skandinavien zu kühl und zu regnerisch ist, so bleiben die Schären vielleicht noch lange, was sie sind, Urlaubsparadies für wenige und besonders für die Einheimischen …
    ich grüße euch Vier herzlich- jetzt aus dem Rheintal, wo es erstaunlich frisch ist!

    • Liebe Ulli,
      wir glauben, dass die meisten von den Preisen Skandinaviens, speziell in Norwegen, abgehalten werden. Ich kann mich noch erinnern, wie ich das erste Mal als Jüngling im lockingen Haar 😉 mit meiner Mutter durch Norwegen fuhr, sie abends auf dem Hotelbett saß und kopfschüttelnd das Geld zählte, was noch nach 3 Wochen übrig war – und wir wollten 6 Wochen reisen (was wir auch taten). Und meine Mutter gehörte eher zu den begüterten Deutschen. Das hat sich bis heute nicht geändert, dass es dort erschreckend teuer ist. Hier in Nord Norfolk ist es ja ähnlich und es werden auch bewusst die Preise hochgehalten, um bestimmte Touristen fernzuhalten, speziell den Massentourismus. Wir können uns nur deswegen so etwas leisten, da Dina’s Familie dort wohnt.

    • Lieber Klausbernd, es kommt ja immer darauf an WIE man reist und mit welchen Ansprüchen, ich selbst habe ja meist ein kleines Budget, habe aber trotzdem schon so einige Wochen in Norge verbracht- dann eben in Jugendherbergen, die zum Teil sowas von schön und lauschich waren und zum anderen im Zelt. Und wenn man das Gewicht auf das Land legt und nicht auf die Küche, dann geht das alles auch … aber ich weiß schon, dass dies nicht Jedermanns und Jederfraus Sache ist-
      Rotzel … -m- weiß grad nicht so genau-

    • Liebe Ulli,
      ich muss zugeben, dass Dina und ich nette Hotels lieben und wir gerne mit einem gewissen Komfort reisen. Heutzutage wäre uns – selbst den lieben (verwöhnten) Buchfeen – ein Zelt nicht so die wahre Freude. Aber vor vielen Jahren, da reisten wir kreuz und quer durch Skandinavien mit dem Zelt, was uns damals sehr gefiel. Heute geht’s in schöne Hotels und tolle Restaurants und wir genießen es aus vollen Zügen. Dafür ist Norwegen nicht gerade geeignet, aber auf dem Segelboot versorgen wir uns selbst, gehen nur abends aus und wohnen dort. Das ist gemütlich und bezahlbar.
      Rotzel ist von Laufenburg aus den Hotzenwald hoch.

    • Mir fällt gerade noch etwas ein:
      1. diese “Naturtouristen”, die zelten oder in Jugendherbergen wie du wohnen, sind naturverträglich und meist keine “litter bugs”
      2. dieser Tourismus, den du ansprichst, hat ja glücklicherweise nicht den Charakter des Massentourismus

      wir wissen noch nicht genau, wann das genau ist. Es wird in der ersten Dezemberwoche sein, denn ich bin zu Gastvorlesungen Ende Nov. bis 2. Dez. in Zürich eingeladen und danach geht’s dann über Rotzel, Freiburg, Bonn und Köln zurück nach Hause.

    • Dear Gallivanta,
      oh dear, I have to admit I did know that Agassiz was a racist. On the other hand he was the one who found out about the ice ages and the power of glaciers, which noone wanted to believe in it’s time. It reminds a bit on Hamsun who was a fashist but a great writer so Agassiz was a racist but a great geologist. But I must admit I don’t know how to deal with those people like Agassiz, Hamsun and many more.

      we don’t know how it was with Key West, but Sweden and especially Norway are so expensive that these countries frighten foreign tourists off. If we didn’t have Hanne’s family living there we could never even dream of going there. Such a holiday costs two fortunes at least 😉

      when you try too book you’ll get a shock about the prices. As it is incredibly expensive there it will not be overrun with tourists, we suppose. That was the reason we felt free to blog about this area.

    • Nee, liebe Heike, du brauchst da keine Bange wegen des Wetters zu haben. Alle die letzten Sommer hatten wir super Wetter dort. Das ist ein Mythos, dass in Skandinavien und England das Wetter schlechter sei als in Deutschland. Einer der Wettermythen, der jegliche Grundlage entbehren. So regnet es z.B. dort, wo die Bilder afgenommen wurden, als auch hier bei uns in Nord Norfolk sehr viel weniger als im Schnitt in Deutschland. So freue dich, das wird schon ein feiner Urlaub werden.

      In the last years the Norwegian weather was much better than the weather of most parts of England. But we in North Norfolk cannot complain about the weather neither.
      But you as a Norwegian Expat in England may have experienced that the English weather (if not East Anglia) is worse than in Norway.

    • So true! And it keeps the islands clean. Amazing how in this age where everyone is aware (“pack it in and pack it out”), there is still garbage left behind wherever people have been. Undisturbed places become almost sacred!

    • You are right. We never thought about but clean beaches are something very special today. We didn`t think about it because fortunately we have clean beaches in Cley and North Norfolk as well as many of them they are too hard to reach.

  37. You mention being seduced immediately by the mountains and fjords. Before I left the Tromso airport I was already seduced. Looking out the window as we flew in and seeing the mountains outside the airport windows grabbed me and never let go. Thanks for your pictures!

    “The house was built on the highest part of the narrow tongue of land between the harbor and the open sea. It had lasted through three hurricanes and it was built solid as a ship.”

But Dina’s family had a quite a substantial summerhouse just a few yards from the shore. It’s great as long as there is no big flood – but there never was 🙂

      wir halten es mit Goethe “Dichtung und Wahrheit” oder dem Irischen “Man sollte eine gute Geschichte nicht durch die Wahrheit verderben.” Also, wir sind das öfter ganz oder teilweise gesegelt, richtig aufm Boot von Hannes Familie, aber nicht dieses Jahr (da fuhren wir die Srecke mit dem Motorboot) und diese Aufnahmen stammen von mehreren turns. Einesteils ist die Srecke nicht so weit und schwierig zu segeln, aber man muss sich saugut auskennen wegen der Untiefen. Häufig liegen aber gut sichtbar Bojen. Dennoch war Selma stets am Ausguck …

      oh dear, ich berühre hier häufig den Grund, da ich meistens mit gerade hereinkommender Flut hinausfahre und bei ablaufender Flut zurückkomme. Das ist aber nicht so schlimm, da hier im Gegensatz zu den Schären die Untiefen sandig statt felsig sind.

    Most of my favourite places to spend time alone in Sweden are in the middle of the countryside in the Stockholm archipelago, and now I’ve been lucky enough to meet my partner and fall in love with the countryside of Norway too. These are wonderful pictures, thank you for sharing!

      We know the Stockholm archipelago as well. Many years ago our dear Master had to go from Helsinki or the Aland islands to Stockholm and back once a week for one year. We accompanied him quite often and loved these islands very much. It was our dream having a stuga there.

  50. Dina, what a beautiful post, your images are so calming. In September I am going to spend 2 days in Stockholm on my way to Germany. I will take a boat ride through the Archipelago’s in Sweden and am wondering if I will experience some similar scenes than yours.

    I agree that, from afar, the islands mimic the backs of whales. Up close, their folds and fissures remind me of walruses or Beetleypete’s avatar picture. 🙂

      all creature of the sea and maritime rocks have similar structures, ice and sea create the same forms.
      Here we have pleasant 24 degrees C and this temperature is forecasted until the end of August. These are the temperatures we like. Well, we send you some ice age,just wait … Siri and Selma are busy working on it!

      105°F, that is seriously hot! The perfect summer day in Norway is 23-26°C only, that’s more than enough. We don’t need an AC and still have energy to be outside and enjoy summer.

  60. Lovely! I spent all my childhood summers in St Annas skärgård on the Swedish east coast. Whilst not as spectacular as the Norwegian coastline, it is sort of similar. And certainly a place of summer dreams full of play, swimming and fishing.

    • What a pity but our holiday has come to an end. We Bookfayries go back to our Master’s North Norfolk coast with vast sand beaches and lots of seals and our dear Dina will escape to a landscape as different as different can be – to the highest German alps in Bavaria.

    • Arminius war ein Wackerer, ja.
      Er hat die Römer ganz schön geärgert (im Teamwork mit dem westfälische Wetter und dem matschigen unzivilisierten wilden Teuto-Räuberwald…)…
      Mittlerweile hat er auf seiner Höhe, dem Teutberg bei Detmold ein wenig Grünspan angesetzt, doch reckt weiterhin trotzig das Cheruskerschwert gen Westen.
      Schaut man ihm jedoch mitten ins Gesicht, lächelt er sehr freundlich und verwegen und meint, das sei doch alles schon sehr lange her, das Schwert hätte er nur aus sentimentalen Gründen noch und nun schwänke er es aus purer Freude an der Kultur.
      Recht hat sie also, die Selma-Fee…✨

      we agree. We know Northern Maine quite well – it’s very similar to Skandinavia, only situated much further south.
      Our dear Master stayed for about two years in Maine and Vermont and really liked it there. Newfoundland is partly similar as the Northern Norwegian coast.
      Are you so lucky living in Maine or in Cape Cod as in your blog-adress? We suppose the beaches at Cope Cod are more like those around here in Northern Norfolk.

  76. I cannot imagine the beauty you are seeing ~ the photos show an enchanted land, and to have one with 150,000 islands to explore it sounds like heaven. Exploring those great places and seeing and experiencing life in those small coastal towns ~ and perfectly defined by a new word you taught me today: smultronställe. “A life without love is like a year without summer, indeed !!! The scenes of those photos and the accompanying words are as if I am there with you…almost, just need to feel the spray of the sea on my face 🙂

      YES, we love the sea and small coastal towns and village like the one we live in. On our journeys we like visiting those places with their nautical romantic. In England quite some of those places have survived 🙂

  77. Ja, ihr Buchfeen wart anscheinend wirklich sehr, sehr lieb heuer! So einen Bilderbuchsommer im Norden bei so angenehmen 25° C und tollem Segelwetter, das sind wirklich super Bedingungen für einen nordischen Sommer. Danke für die wunderbaren Fotos und erfrischenden Worte. Die haben dafür gesorgt, dass ich mir im Fotoalbum unsere Fährfahrt von Turku Abo nach Stockholm in Erinnerung gerufen habe. Herrlich war es! Wie Riesen blickten wir, von der Fähre über die Inseln, Inselchen und den wie Walrücken im Wasser liegenden Felsen mit ab und zu einem einsamen, roten Häuschen darauf. Wie eine Kulisse zogen die Schären an uns vorbei. Ich kann nur sag, das muss man einmal gesehen haben! Fast genauso schön wie bei euch! Liebe Grüße auch an Hanne und KLausbernd aus dem nicht mehr so heißen Mitteleuropa 😉

      Da hast ja auch schöne Erinnerinnerungen bei mir wachgerufen. Vor vielen Jahren fuhr ich ein Jahr lang fast einmal wöchentlich von Abo nach Stockholm und zurück. Auch ich fand das jedes Mal wieder wunderschön – übrigens auch bei jedem Wetter.
