Our dear Master sternly objected to publish this little article because it doesn’t fit into our topics living in the North and literature. But basically we Fab Four are a women’s group of three women to one man – if you want to count Bookfayries as women – and we outvoted him. But he admitted that it would have a shame not to publish Dina’s picture of this three women. He was fascinated as well by the self-assured exhibitionism with which the three graces presented themselves as aesthetic objects.
By the way, his feminist mother taught our beloved Master: “You honour a woman by desire“. Well, what should we say about this?
Was sollen wir dazu sagen?
A noble man is led far by woman’s gentle words
This is a quote of Goethe, who many think to be a womanizer and an expert about women. But it seemed to us that he himself never ever allowed women to direct him.
We Bookfayries noticed that women in our culture often appear in threes – except in Scandinavia where they used to appear in fours. The female groups of three go back to pre-Christian times. In the Celtic tradition, from which Christianity took most of its symbols, we already find the three women who became in Christianity the three Marys: Mary Magdalen (this archetype can be projected on the woman on the right in this picture), Mary Salome (the left woman), and Mother Mary (the women in the middle). Similar are the three daughters of Sophia Fides, Caritas, and Spes, who became in Christianity faith, love, and hope. We could go on listing groups of three – but don’t worry, we don’t.
The cannabis friend and famous film director Robert Altman had a dream about women, which he did not fully understand – well, who understands women and dreams? 😉 But nevertheless he transformed it into a film in 1977. He called it “3 Women” and the film historian Roger Ebert called it the best film in 1977. It’s about the relationship of the three women Pinky, Millie and Willie which we didn’t really understood.
Last not least we have to mention the novella cycle “Three Women” by Robert Musil. The three women Grigia, the Portugese woman, and Tonka represent the non-rational which refuses male tenure. All three parts of this cycle end in a drama which they have in common with Altman’s film.
By the way, we Bookfayries found that the Times (28.10.1949) called Musil “the most important novelist writing in German in this half-century” but at the same time “the least known writer of the age“. We cannot agree, nearly everybody has at least heard of “The Man Without Qualities“, which we read in our Fairy School as one of the most influential novels of the 20th century.
Okt. 1949 Musil als “the most important novelist writing in German in this half-century” bezeichnete, der jedoch zugleich “the least known writer of the age” sei. Jh.
Love from the three women
Liebe Grüße von uns drei Frauen

Good morning, dar Derrick,
we liked to read about an intellectual protagonist without any ambition. Musil wrote the three books of this novel from 1921 until his death in 1942. It’s an unfinished novel which was planned to end with an incest (brother and sister) and the war. We find it interesting that Musil started to write this novel when Thoman Mann`s short story “The Blood of the Walsungs” (Wälsungenblut) was published – a story ending in an incest brother – sister as well.
We think “The Man Without Qualities” is still worth reading. Musil writes an interesting style.
Thanks and have a happy weekend

This goes into men and woman relationship issues. Who directs and who is being directed?
I quite like the idea that a noble man is led far by woman’s gentle words.
Didn’t Goethe indeed listen a lot to women’s gentle words? Still, I would imagine that he always made his own decisions. I wonder, whether one could say that it is rather natural that a man, who is being true to himself, wants to be seen to direct his own life and prefers woman to “direct” in subtle ways. Is there anything wrong with this? Well, maybe sometimes a woman may act more in a manly way and a man more in a feminine way. But this does not have to be always like this, right?

Dear Uta,
thank you so much for your wise words! 🙂
One could say men need the advice of women as the other way round as well. But the crucial point is HOW it’s given.
C.G. Jung thought that men as well as the animus is put in touch with his body by the women as women as the anima are put in touch with their mind by men. We don’t really know if this is a justification of role behaviour or nature.
Anyway we think role behaviour is an interesting topic … Much to say about …

Fesch!

Guten Morgen, liebe Pia,
danke für deinen ausführlichen Kommentar! 🙂

We think about it. But we have to admit we don’t know why that is until now. First we have to study C.G. Jung’s articles about the quaternity symbolism again.
There seems to be a tendency that the symbolism of the three is more related to the world of mind and ideas like in Hegel’s dialectic (it always has to do with time) whereas the symbolism of the four is more down to earth, more materialistic. Plato saw four as the number of matter.

I suspect that men wrote these views of three women. The Muses and the Fates were three women, weren’t they? Perhaps it was simply that women lived longer than men, and the older generation was more likely to be still living with them. Thus young men often had to contend with three women — sister, mother and grandmother while growing up. Then he had to contend with his wife, his daughter and his mother after he married. Thus the three ways men see women remains fairly constant — the young, dangerously-free one whose behavior has to be watched/controlled (first sister then daughter), the matron (first mother than wife), then the crone ruining his fun (first his grandmother, then his own mother takes that role). Us women, we see ourselves in far more roles than that. 🙂

Dear Brenda,
actually is hard to say who coined archetypes. But I think that an archetype is neither coined by men nor by women, is kind of beyond this. The archetype of three is basically bound to time (past, present, future as in Hegel’s dialectic of thesis, antithesis, sythesis as the acting of the Zeitgeist) and I would agree it is projected on the role of women and always was. It’s obvious that time was always seen as female. To see it under this aspect is a matter of perception but I don’t think that this way of perceiving is gender-related. By the way it doesn’t say that there are not many more female roles, but it says all those roles can be traced back to these three (these three are the atoms of the others or you can say they generate all the others). This archetype is an organisation modell not more or less one can use to understand the multitude of reality better. But it it’s a model not the reality, like map and landscape.
Thanks a lot and wishing youa great weekend

Except these archetypes are ones based in the home, and once women leave the home, then the archetypes fail. Once a woman is CEO or President of the USA, can these archetypes still have meaning? Should they?
LikeLiked by 1 person
Excuse me, but that has nothing to do with archetypes how much power you have in the society. Archetypes are the grammar of perception, a theory and not reality! They are a means to give reality an order and they are an abstract order – structure they are without content. When the content comes in we get an archetypal picture which reflects ideology. It’s a bit like Chomsky’s idea of generative grammar or deSaussure’s langue (and not parole). But for for a female president or CEO you easily find an archetypical picture: The Queen or female ruler, no problem. And it depends on her style she can be seen at next iconigraphic level produced by this archetyp as the fighter (Amazon) or wise ruler and so on.
I have to admit I don’t really understand your objection. Could you, please, be so kind to explain it again? I am probably a bit blocked understanding your argument.
Thank you

Dear Brenda, dear Klausbernd,
may it goes like this; In a very wide sense I personally like to think of an archetype as a role model or sort of female heroin. For women in the 21st century, it can be hard to find a strong feminine role model. This is where our chosen female heroine or archetype comes in. Then an archetype can be anyone who has a trait or traits that you admire and would like more of in your life. Soemone from whom you can draw inspiration and strength. What do you think about this definition? Too esoteric?
Now let me think about my role models … Hmm.. Why don’t I start with Dina? 😉
Wishing you both a wonderful evening from the Bavarian Alps,
Dina x

Maybe I should explain it in another way:
“three” in combination with “female” is the archetype we wrote about.
The three Marys is a mythological structure generated by this basic archetype, but it easily can generate other images. It all goes back to old woman, independant woman and mother. That’s the first level of archetypal pictures generated by three females.

Good morning, dear Brenda,
don’t worry, we didn’t feel offended.
Siri made the problems with archetypes quite clear. Actually there are two different meaning of the word archetype:
1. an archetype is a basic grammatical structure of the language of symbols – that’s the scientific meaning
2. an archetype is an image we feel that it is quite basic – that’s a kind of undefined use of this notion in everyday conversation. In this use of the word archetype a lot of ideology is involved
Thank you very much that you objected, we are quite happy about because we had to think about “archetype” again and the problems with using this notion. By the way even C.G. Jung got into a muddle with the definition of archetype, which actually goes back to Plato, as in his early works he uses the first definition and in his later works he rather used the second one.
Lots of love from sunny Cley

Archetypes are a useful place to start a dialogue, I’ve always thought. Have you considered that there is no comparable archetype structure for men? Women are often written into one of the three categories, crone, virgin or mother, as if always defined by age and/or marriage, but men are usually not defined this way. Or have you seen men sorted into archetypes based on their age and/or marriage? I have seen men classed by their occupation, say King, warrior or Scholar, etc. Those are archetypes, but not domestic ones like the ones given women. I also don’t usually see them in threes as women are. Anyway, your post made me think, and I was fascinated by your discussion of the archetypes. Best, Brenda
LikeLiked by 2 people
Dear Brenda,
not seeing archetypes in a scientific way but just as undefined kind of basic images you find for men son, ruler/fighter, slave, and wise man. In the system of archetypes the three as the basic symbol of time is aligned to women and the number four as the basic symbol of space is aligned to men. But you are right, thinking about basic male images I have much more problems finding them. Emma Jung, who thought a lot about male and female, did choose the easy way out by seeing the basic male images 100% parallel to the female ones (like in Tarot f.e.). A lot of authors followed her since the seventies. I rather see it from a scientific point of view and disagree because from a deeper point of view male is aligned to four and female to three.
These basic images for men and women are of course highly ideological and reflect the Zeitgeist – and I suppose it all goes back to C.G. Jung rather to Emma Jung who wasn’t a systematic thinker at all and then his ideas were taken over and highly simplified and popularised by the esoteric movement and authors like Zimmer-Bradley. But that’s sheer ideology and has nothing to do with archetypes.

Mists of Avalon was a great book. I think men are not easily classed into threes or fours, and my argument is that women are not either. Imagine if men were classified as boy/playboy, husband/father/nurturer and old man/sorcerer/observer. Those are more equivalent to the roles given women. People don’t dwell on the roles of men in the home, though. I find it interesting.

Oh sorry, I clicked the wrong button and off my text went.
To cut it short: Using “archetype” in a populistic way I would 100% agree with you, to see “archetype” in a scientific way I would disagree.
If we look for images to describe male or female roles there are as many the seeker can think of and I have the feeling we should rather avoid to call them archetyes because it’s part of the definition of archetypes that they don’t depend on ideologies.
Well, your arguments make me think as well and by explaining my standpoint and became aware of it. Thanks a lot.
All the best

Dear Brenda,
if you use archetype like you do of course you can see the male images as boy/playboy, husband/father, old man. It depends on your cognitive interest which images you use but this has nothing to do with archetypes. If your cognitive interest is home then you choose this level, if it work then you choose that level. It’s all up to you. But your cognitive interest has no relation to the linguistics of the language of symbolism and archetypes. That has to do with your interest which depends on many factors – sociological, psychological, historical …
By the way the most powerful images for men and women are produced by advertisment and media nowadays, but they are not archetypes.
Now I have to go out with my beloved bookfayries who, by the way, find our discourse very interesting.

Liebe Susanne,
kennst du von John Irving “Until I find you”?
Feines wieder Einleben in Berlin.
Hab’s schön.

Lieber Klausbernd,

Eigentlich schade – no pain, no sacrifice, no initiation, just fun.

Good afternoon, dear Rebecca Clanmother,
basic for the symbolism of the number three is its connection with time. Our Master told us: “three is time, four is space.” In Hegel’s philosophy, which is based on ideas about history, we have the three folded dialectic: thesis, antithesis, synthesis, the law the Zeitgeist is following.
But the spiritual world likes trinities as well. This started with the Celtic as well as with Egyptian traditions and was inherited by Christians, who are obcessed with their holy trinity. But you find it in magic traditions as well, the three knocks on the door and three times casting a spell f.e. And last not least three is connected with women as virgin, mother, wiese woman which goes back to the phases of the moon. And therefore three symbolises rhythm too.
Anyway three is special as the sum of the two numbers before 1+2=3 and it is a prime number.
Well, dear Rebecca, you will be astonished how much is to say about the symbolism of the number three. Good luck with your researches 🙂 Will you tell us yor finds?
Lots of love to the other side of the globe to our dear friend in Vancouver

“A Man Without Qualities” kenne ich nicht, nur “A Man Without A Woman”. Martina

well, Siri and Selma are on hand female but at the other they are fairies and fairies are kind of beings who are not clear male or female. But on the other hand no human being is 100% male or female. We are all mixtures. And quite some psychologists think as better male and female is balanced in a person as happier she or he is. For fairies like Bookfayries it’s natral that male and female is ballanced.
Furthermore our beloved Bookfayries are adult and children at time as well. It’s the nature of those Bookfayries being beings in-between.
Lots of love to dear Norwegian friend xxx We will send you some sunshine 🙂

ABOUT THE NUMBER 3 IN LITERATURE
We just had a little stroll in the sunshine and by accident we ended up at a little bookfair on the village green in a neighbouring village. There we found an old scholarly book by A. Tanner “Adultery in the Novel” (1979). Siri and Selma immediately became aware that there is nearly always 3 people involved. It’s either two women and one men or two men and one woman like in “Lady Chatterley’s Lover” and “Madame Bovary” f.e. In literature three people mostly are of both sexes and it is about adultery, whereas in mythology three is mostly connected with the same sex – mostly female as female is connected with time via the phases of the moon. This difference between literature and mythology is quite unusual because usually literature copies mythological structures. But of course (not only) modern literature is about passion and passion usually needs both sexes.
That was just an idea when browsing Tanner’s book.
Enjoy the Sunday

Excellent post! Outstanding image of the three beautiful women. The sight of the three women pulls a string with many of the readers according to the engaged commentaries.
When I write, I find the use of archetypical characters and situations helpful to give give my literary work a universal acceptance. I assume the readers identify the characters and situations in their social and cultural context. By using common archetypes like the Hero, Mother, Mentor, Villain etc., I attempt to impart realism to my works, as the situations and characters are drawn from the experiences of the world. I suppose it works for the photographer as well.
Great reading!

Dear Steven,
I did construct the characters of my novels following certain basic images which can be traced back to mythology. As recommended in most schools for creative writing I follow Joseph Campbell “The Hero with a Thousand Faces” and “The Soul of Screen-Writing” by Keith Cunningham. The latter goes very much into detail and is the Bible of screen writers in Hollywood. But I suppose it is interesting for novelists as well. It’s basically about the structure of mythological heroes and their conflicts and how we can use them today.
A successful photographer like Dina works with those insights as well. I don’t know if I am right but I think the more basic an image is the more powerful it is. I just saw “Honeymoon Nude” by John Currin in the Tate Collection which casts a spell because it’s so Venusian. And Dina’s picture of the three women does the same because like any powerful picture it’s clear and has a secret as well, it’s near to a mythological sheme. Here writers, photographers, and painters meet.
Thanks for commenting and have a happy week

I’m glad you mentioned Campbell’s “The Hero with a Thousand Faces”, Klausbernd. Actually we studied the Myth Cycle at Uni and I was interested enough to come back to this book years later and read the whole thing. It is well worth a read – an endlessly fascinating book by a fascinating man. The idea is that there is basically only one story, the grand story of our lives, the monomyth. This story is told in millions of different ways, but ultimately every story ever told is either just a retelling of this grand story, or it is a re-telling of certain aspects of this more complete story. The Myth Cycle is a fascinating idea, fascinating in the real sense that in fixates the mind once you begin contemplating it, and it is something I’m very glad I’ve heard about. But would I use it to structure every story I ever write? Well, no. Is it the touchstone I return to when appraising a work of fiction? Again, no. Like feminist criticism, Marxist criticism, Freudian criticism, Structuralist criticism, deconstructionalist criticism – this particular variety of Jungian criticism is good to know about, but any schema that seeks to encompass the whole of literature is only ever going to end up being a girdle. After a short while the constraints and pinching imposed on literature by the theory are sure to become too much to suffer and the restrictive garment needs to be taken off, if not cast aside. We may not be nearly as pretty or shapely with these garments off, but at least we can breath. Ideas in the cycle like ‘the rejection of the call’ come into my mind constantly while reading or watching films – the rejection of the call to adventure is a cliché in so many texts – as it is in life. And that is the point, Campbell doesn’t see his ideas as being about interpreting literature, but that the interpreting of literature is a way to come to an understanding of our own lives – and that is something I wholeheartedly agree with. So, rather than take this work as the last word on the structure of stories and the monomyth and the possibilities of self-transcendence, this is a book that is better read as an introduction to thinking about literature as a way of coming to understand our own lives.
And what better task is there? And what surer guide than literature?

Good morning, dear Steven,
thank you very, very much to explain and critisize Campbell’s basic idea. Do you know Campbell’s last interview by Bill Moyers (actually 260p. in the German ed.) edited under the title “The Power of Myth”? It’s an excellent summary of Campbell’s ideas – and more than that.
Well, it’s a question if this structure of the path of a hero is a restriction or if it is a basic structure of every fiction. For C.G. Jung it was basic because in the end it was produced by our brain structure which determines our way of perceiving. Keith Cunningham, the leading Hollywood coach for screenwriters, thinks that every story that works as literature or film can be traced back to these steps of the path of the hero. Well, I suppose if you abstract it quite a bit you can project it on any possible plot. If you look at the details this theory is partly coined by the zeitgeist – but as a general abstract theory it seems to work in explaining how myths, literature, and the arts in general are structured.
Of course, if I write fiction I don’t do it with this structure in my mind. I just write following my intuitions, but afterwards I look how Campbells ideas fit and I change where I have the feeling my plot doesn’t work. To start with Campbells ideas would produce a boring text which shows that it’s constructued, but to correct a text and especially to add some tension and/or speed it works.
Have a happy weekend

They look like two sisters flanking their mother. Three is strength when used in design and structure. This trio’s strength and confidence is both apparent and appealing.
Life in Scandinavia, in the past, could be tough. The four was probably just three plus a spare. 🙂 Thank you Fab Four.

Good morning, dear Thorsaurus,
we agree in what you write about Scandinavia. Three has to do with time, mind, and spirit whereas four is down to earth, it is connected with matter and space from Plato’s time onwards. And you added an important point to the symbolism of three: it’s strength! – and we would see it as ballace too.
We wish you a happy week

First of all, what a lovely photo. I never realized the symbolism of women and threes before now. Interestingly enough, throughout all of my middle and high school years and to this day, i have had two dear friends that are constant. In school we were like the Three Musketeers. Thanks for this wonderful post!

I knew upon first look of the opening photograph that this was to be an incredible post, and indeed it was…very happy to hear that you outvoted the Master of the Blog and put up this piece and I could not agree more with: “You honour a woman by desire“ – and yes, after reading this I can say you’ve all been honoured. Wishes for a great autumn and continue with the adventures.

Dear Dalo,
thank you very much for honouring us 🙂 This made our day!
Even our dear Master is quite happy that we outvoted him. Yes, he can be quite stern sometimes, it’s his Prussian upbriging.
We wish you a great autumn as well. Here it started in a perfect way: sunny and with nice temperatures – meaning for us around 20 degrees C. And of course we wish you happy adventures as well

Dina, that photo is so special. It is not only the landscape, the colors and the beautiful costumes. That girl on the right? Barefoot and with the tattoo … where tradition meets modernity! This is such a great shot!

Thanks a lot, dear Francesca,
It’s amazing how these three women incarnate the archetypal image.
Actually that’s typical for Bavaria, it’s the place in Germany where tradition and modernity meet. And maybe that’s the secret of the economical success of Bavaria.
Thanks for commenting.

Alles Liebe

Great reading from you again 🙂
Yes, we know what you mean, it’s all about strong women and what makes it so interesting is that tradition and emancipation meet in this picture. That’s the kind of tension that makes an image interesting, we suppose.
Wishing you a GREAT weekend as well

First of all I should say this, I enjoyed so much to be in here, in this post. Reading was a great enjoy, and so beautiful words, thoughts, replies, quotes,…etc. And before reading this post, the photograph of tree beautiful women fascinated me. Yes, I can wear their costumes too, but in this photograph the originality, the creativity is shoes off… This was amazing. So artistic, like a fashion photograph. Thank you for these beautiful moments that you shared with us. Love, nia

Woah! I’m really loving the template/theme of this website. It’s simple, yet effective. A lot of times it’s tough to get that “perfect balance” between user friendliness and appearance. I must say that you’ve done a superb job with this. Also, the blog loads extremely fast for me on Safari. Superb Blog!
