“The travel writer seeks the world we have lost – the lost valleys of the imagination.”
The editor of the German edition of National Geographic (Sept. 2015) starts his monthly column with the following sentences, to which Dina and our Master found bound to as well: “Opposite to the roving reporter is the travelling reporter. He takes his time for telling his readers a story. He has absorbed the strange and foreign. Travelling reporters are painters with words who produce pictures in our heads …”
Here we are again, the assiduous Bookfayries Siri and Selma. Did you already miss us?
We have been so busy in our garden with all the apples and plums and then with felting our sauna’s roof that there was no time left for blogging.
But wasn’t it nice to enjoy our last mountain-blog for so long? As it was such a success we go on with the Alps. You recognised it already, we suppose, this postcard is from the Watzmann-Königssee- region in the German Alps again, which our beloved Dina fell in love with.
Since 1978 this area is a German national park at the Austrian border. The Königssee (King’s Lake) is 623 ft. deep and proudly billed as Germany’s cleanest lake, in which Dina often swam during the last month. The widely travelled explorer Alexander von Humboldt called the area of Schönau at the lake “one of most beautiful on our globe“. And you wouldn’t believe it, the water of the Königssee is drinkable and to make sure it stays like this only few electric powered boats are allowed to sail it.
The mountains around this lake were iced over during the Pleistocene. The glaciers formed this rugged alpine scenery from hard limestone when melting back.
This is Germany’s most popular hiking region with 149 m of trails through pristine wilderness. But not that wild that we couldn’t find a beer garden for refreshing. Who wants to give his knees a break will find cable cars to take him or her down so that every excursion stays civilised. Here we could slow down and found a silence we only knew from the sea.
The King’s Lake as seen from top of the Jenner Mountain
We suppose you know that Hitler favoured this area, the famous Obersalzberg. The “Eagle’s Nest” was build on top of the Kehlstein mountain and was a gift to Hitler for his 50th birthday. But Hitler preferred to stay in his Berghof with its system of bunkers. All of the buildings were blasted after WW II to avoid a “pilgrimage” of the neo-Nazis.
The famous pilgrimage of this area goes to St Bartholomew on a peninsula of the Königssee. It’s Europe’s oldest mountain-pilgrimage.
We went up to the “Eagle’s Nest” to see the rare golden eagle and as we learned our birdwatching lessons we spotted an Eurasian griffon vulture as well.
That’s it about these mountains which were pushed up from the sea 200 mio. years ago, when the African plate were pushing against the European. This was during Trias when the dinosaurs were around.
Well, everything emerges from the sea and therefore we will turn to sea again which we have at our doorstep. Living at the coast it seems to us that the sea with its wide views and shipping produces rather the non-conformist whereas the mountains rather produce the conservatives. We suspect that the landscape forms its people – or what do you think?
All the best
Bis dann

A wonderfully picturesque travelogue of an area I have never visited. It is stunningly beautiful, and I like the ‘onion domes’ on the building, that remind me of Russia. As always, the combination of interesting writing, and crystal-clear images, make your posts a delightful experience.

Good afternoon, dear Pete,
yes, these Bavarian onion domes are like the Russian ones. You find them more or less in catholic countries only like Bavaria, Austria, nortthern Italy, Bulgaria, and Russia. When we are travelling in Germany and see these domes we know we are in the South. The first onions domes were built in Germany in the 16th c. but they really spread during the 19th c. when Russian tourist flooded the German spas and built their chapels there. So the onion became fashionable.
Lots of love from the windy and rainy coast

Three years ago we visited the Alps in winter but we have to admit we couldn’t get to this area because because we weren’t able to reach Berchdesgaden. There was too much snow and ice just on those days we have been there. Nevertheless we loved the Alps in winter, soo much snow there 🙂 And we need snow because we all four grew up in areas with lots of snow in the winter. A winter without snow is boring. And snow in the mountains is especially GREAT!

So etwa argumentieren unsere liebklugen Buchfeen.

Magnificent landscape!! It must be a dream to do mountain hiking in the Alps. Just recently I was thinking about you; I saw the film “Hamsun” for the second time. Hamsun payd this area a visit, but I assume he had no eyes for the scenery at that time and went straight to Hitler’s Berghof.
Ha det!

Dear Hjerter,
Hitler entertained a lot of artist in his Berghof. Hamsun’s meeting of Hitler was very special as Hamsun wanted to meet Hitler for political reasons but Hitler wanted to meet Hamsun because he liked his novels. So this visit ended in Hamsun being kicked out of the Berghof. Nevertheless he went on being an admirer of Hitler. Therefore quite a lot of Norwegians burned his books after the occupation. By the way Lars Saabye Christensen mentions this in his novel “The Half Brother”.
By the way, we blogged about Hamsun https://kbvollmarblog.wordpress.com/2012/02/18/buchtalk-knut-hamsun/

you are right. The last time our Master has been there he had so much snow and ice that he couldn’t reach a town there – although he was well equipped and is very much used to driving on snow.
Sometimes some villages are snowed in there for days. We were snowed in in another part of the Alps (on the Swiss side) several times and that was sooo cozy: people come together around roaring fires and then it’s so silent, no stress with work as every activity comes to a standstill except shoveling snow. We like the light when snow is everywhere and the clear cold air.
Thanks and have a happy evening – we will go out tonight 🙂

The mountains are a fortress, the sea a highway. So the mountains provide security, but an enclosed way of life. The sea can bring you anything, anyone, so it is a source of open-mindedness as well as danger. I try to journey in balance between the two. 🙂

“Living at the coast it seems to us that the sea with its wide views and shipping produces rather the non-conformist whereas the mountains rather produce the conservatives. We suspect that the landscape forms its people – or what do you think?”
Travelling through Turkey many times during the 1980s, I think I can support your observation, to an extent. I noticed mountain folk tended to keep their small areas of usable land very tidy and neat. Houses along the flat coastal areas with more land often filled that land with mountain ranges of junk and litter.
Though I hesitate to say it was just to do with conservatism and non-conformity, it could seem like that. In reality, I think it has more to do with restricted amount of usable room the mountain Turks have, though I suspect such restrictions could evolve into a conservative streak among mountain dwellers over countless generations. We only have to look at the Swiss to evidence that. But what about the Dutch? A mountain people without mountains, I suppose.

Dear Bryan,
I was amazed that you see the Dutch as mountain people without mountains. I was partly brought up near the Dutch border and for us the Dutch were hip, sexy, and much more free as the the Germans at least. When we were teens we went across the border for our sexual experiences because the Dutch were more liberated. So for me Siris and Selmas idea make sense and it fits.
In Germany conservatism is dominant in the South whereas liberalism is practised in the North, well cum grano salis …

I never really imagined such beauty to be found in Bavaria ~ the picturesque scenery yes, like your first shot especially, a place that can capture the quaintness of the history of the place. But to see such beauty up in the Alps and lakes nestled by pine trees and carved from glaciers…I did not expect. Love the photo of the mountain goat and I can imagine myself getting lost in this area for quite a long time and being very, very happy about it. Beautiful post ~

Always a real pleasure to be transported away via your images and post. This has great significance for me as I have spent a couple of years living in Passau and would often travel on the E56 / E60 to Attersee during the Summer. A really wonderful area to explore at any time of the year. Your images have given me a smile this morning and invoked fond memories. Merci mille fois. Vielen Dank. Best regards, James

Guten Morgen, liebe Pia,

The Fab Four of Cley
P.S.:

Danke fest!

Also so was!

I enjoyed your photos of the region around Berchtesgaden. It brought back memories of my visit there in July, 2013. I went on the boat across the lake to the small church, and to the far edge, where we hiked to the next lake (Obersee).
I also took a video from the boat of the trumpet player and echo of the trumpet sound on the mountains around the lake. Here is a link to my youtube video of that:
