“On July 22nd 2011, we lost some of Norway’s most precious assets: our youth. But we kept our dignity as a nation. Now we will find our way back to normality. But there will be new tests that are just as demanding as the ones we have passed.

I am proud of the way the Norwegian people faced this first big test. We were hit with a brutality that threw every one of us into emotional chaos. We could have gone astray. Instead, our people responded with roses and promises of more democracy and a more open society.

We passed the second test too. We bid farewell to our loved ones in an atmosphere of tranquility and respect. Every last goodbye requires strength. We stood together with those who mourned and needed a shoulder to cry on or a hand to hold.

Our third test is yet to come. It will also require a great deal of us, but in a different way.”

      we think it’s GREAT that Joan teaches the German language to the children of refugees and helps them to understand the German way of life. We are very happy about the many Germans who are volunteering otherwise there would be chaos in Germany. But you in Sweden take a lot of refugees as well, percentagewise to your population much more than Germany. We are impressed!

  2. I saw the ‘cycling refugees’ on TV. They were welcomed into Norway, and treated well too.
    Sad to remember the loss of life on Utoya as well.
    The photos are stunning. It seems to me that your photography just keeps getting better. The shot of the goose is incredibly good.

    • Good afternoon, dear Pete,
      we have been busy in garden – all the leaves and windfalls …
      Norway, Sweden, Luxemburg, the Netherlands and Germany are wecoming the refugees. Well, one could say that the rich countries welcome the refugees whereas the poor countries like the eastern European countries and the UK actually don’t want them.
      We are amazed seeing how enthusiastic people in Germany and other countries are helping. On the other hand there are few right wing groups speaking of foreign infiltration. We would see it just the other way round: Germany was a destination for refugees since the early sixties and this helped Germany not to become a ridgid and boring country. We needed the inspiration the foreigners are giving. A sociological theory says as more foreigners a country is willing to integrate as more it will boom later because of new ideas.
      But of course the situation right now fuels neo-fascist groups and individuals like Anders Behring Breivik.

    • Da hast du vollkommen Recht, lieber Pit, aber du glaubst es kaum, hier hatten wir heute bis 17.8 Grad C. Viel zu warm für diese Jahreszeit!
      Wir fanden, wir können nicht so tun, als ob die Herausforderung durch die Flüchtlingsströme nicht bestände. Angesichts des Flüchtlingselends kann man nicht nur über Blümchen und Herbstblätter reden. Aber wir finden, es ist sehr wichtig, die positive Seite zu sehen. Die Menschen in vielen Ländern engagieren sich und helfen gern. Die Deutschen learned their political lesson, das, finden wir, ist etwas, worauf man stolz (nicht nur) als Deutscher sein kann.

      it’s great that so many people seemed to have learned the political lesson and are able to deal with neo-fascist aggression and the streams of refugees. Designing this blog it was important for us to see these positive tendencies at least in quite a lot of European countries.

      We had the feeling seeing all these refugees we cannot blog about flowers and autumn leaves only. When we designed this blog we became aware how important it is to see the positive side of this challenge dealing with neo-fascism and with the influx of people of other cultures. Seeing the news it seemed to be that the world is a horrible place but looking around that isn’t true. As we wrote above, many people learned the political lesson very well. We see an intelligent kindness spreading, people are helping and welcoming.

    • The whole life is a lesson. The great act grows from many small acts done. Helping eachother is the responsibility of everyone. No, you’re right. The world is not only made by news, but can be made of good dreams. Piece by piece in little steps and then some day, freedom can came true perhaps.
      Did I ever told you, that I like Norway so very much? Now, I find again the reason why I do- it is grounded in your sensible touch and the strength you hold your way. I am sure to return to this great northern land someday…

      Ulli commented that a crucial point is communication. We have to learn to listen to both sides, to those who welcome the refugees and those who don’t want more refugees or even no refugees at all. It seems to me that the discourse has become quite fanatic on either side. We need understanding. But on the other hand members of the neo-Fascist groups neither want to listen nor to talk – like all fundamentalists. What to do?
      It is very important to find a solution as soon as possible. And part of it is that the different political parties don’t use this crisis for enlarging their power.
      Of course, it’s easy for me to write about dealing with this challenge because I see it from a safe distance. I am not affected in England.

    • Yes, I subscribe to you. We have many refugees here in Germany. The communal administrations are overloaded. They have not enough people to help, not enough rooms for living, not enough money to build rooms and houses and to feed all people. Our politicans leave them alone with this great problem. Meanwhile the fear of the people is growing: how can be found solutions and how this all can be paid. What you said about fundamental opinions is true. They cry loud, but they will not find constructive solutions. There is so much fanatic hate and anger. But also on the other side. It is very important to try to find a diplomatic way. Discussing, talking is one way, open ears, minds, hearts. Spending necessary things to refugees like warm clothes is another way. Teaching them our german language to enable them for integration also is a possibility to help.
      It is easy to write, yes…and every word is a voice and a call for coming together, for a better understanding and to better control the own little fear: How can this all find a good solution?
      Thank you. Your engagement is showing a direction, the only one, I think, that would work…

    • I like you comment about refugees, that people listen to both sides. In USA, when different states wanted to wait, it never had any thing to do with religion and hatred. In one state, in farming egg district, they were caught, using slave labor for immigrants that were trying held at the boarder. The same state was hit hard with homelessness, the same state has second highest population from cartel mixing drugs. The same state is more multi cultured with families living and taking care of the people on board. The same state have had young woman sold into the sex trade.
      The same state welcome and employed the Muslim Somali, population, which most are happy to be hear. All this add on happened within a decade. If I were charge of state, I would demand federal government step in and lend a helping hand. Also, if they are live in tents they the tents should be in warm climates and not in the middle of winter in a deep freeze. The biggest problem I see is there so many small children that upon arriving in the present moment in history will need extra security.
      With that extra security, and the some teenagers like our own, need to be identified.

      You are absolutely right.
      Our heart tells us we have to stress the positive side. All the people we know help in their way with small or bigger acts of kindness. And Sue from Calgary, commenting regularly here, even welcomes a Syrian family in Canada (she wrote about it some comments further down). But the media are stressing the negative like neo-Fascist action, Pegida etc. It seems to us they are helping the ridgid conservative side by create fear.
      Anyway, we thank you very, very much for taking the effort commenting that elaborately.

  9. My heart goes out to the the poor people that have lost their homes and beloved ones, struggling through the hardest times, through so many countries and leaving families behind.
    The pressure mounts on Europe and I’m very impressed with the solidarity and the helpful hands from the various countries. In particular, Greece, Italy and Germany.

  13. Yesterday we rocked the gym at Schillerschule together with Sacred Fire Music, especially for the “little ones” it was just so exciting and mind-blowing….
    You should have seen them dancing and singing and expressing their thoughts, when we were talking about the meaning of life and the elements….
    The director of the school gave us the gym for free and invited all the refugees and their children.
    On Facebook you can see the rainbow MJ, Dean and Magali saw on their way to us….I was wondering about my picture of the other half last summer in Odenwald…..
    Today I´m so happy that I could cry all time!

    Gibt es denn gar kein Mittel gegen “Wohlstandsneurose”, das frage ich mich schon so viele Jahre.
    In letzter Zeit sage ich oft: Wenn ihr schon ein bissel gesunder seid, könnt ihr schon helfen….
    Ein bißchen habe ich auch überlegt, wo wir hingehen sollen, wenn dieser braune Mist hier wieder ernsthaft losgehen sollte, in einem Traum sagte man mir, nach Spanien.
    Bei Lidl in Absteinach Kuhkaff im Odenwald, war ein junges Pärchen an der Kasse zusammen mit einer alten Frau:
    Die Alte: Die schlagen nochmal alle eure Kinder tot, besorgt euch schon mal Pfefferspray.
    Die Jungen: Gell, das geht doch so nicht, früher beim Adolf war es halt noch gut, der hat dann nur zuviel gewollt.
    Vor mir war eine Frau, sie drehte sich um und weinte, ich habe sie in die Arme genommen und versucht zu beruhigen, mitten im Kuhkaff an der Kasse im Sommer 2015.
    Falscher Film! Unser Kinderarzt sagte immer: Intelligenz ist Angstbewältigungsstrategie, manche merken aber nicht, dass sie Angst haben scheinbar.
    Ich könnte noch sehr viel schreiben über alle, die ich kenne, die versuchen, etwas Sinnvolles zu tun.

      na, wir glauben nicht, dass in Deutschland wieder die Geschichte zurückgedreht wird, so dass man ins Exil ausweichen muss. Es gibt doch ein deutliches Engagement für mehr Menschlichkeit und gegen die Neo-Nazis. Zumindest hier von England aus betrachtet, scheinen mir Pegida und Neo-Nazi-Gruppen doch die Ausnahme zu sein.

    • Schaue gerade einmal wieder zdf…es geht um alte Kulturgüter.
      Wissenschaftler überlegen wie sie wenigstens die wichtigsten Kulturschätze vor dem IS bewahren können, z.B. mit 3D Fotos…
      Ich mache mir Gedanken über die geistig-spirituellen Hintergründe und die wirklichen Interessen der “Akteure”.
      Das macht die Einschätzung der Situation nicht einfacher.
      Luft(hansa) streikt, sie wollen mehr Geld oder den Status halten. So wie jeder hier eigentlich.
      Vielleicht radikalisiere ich mich noch, kein Putzmittel mehr, ökologisch abbaubares Waschmittel, kein Plastik, keine Lebensmittel mit Strichcode mehr, Bekleidung nach ethischen Grundsätzen, keine Ausbeutung von Menschen mehr mittragen….nur noch eigenverantwortlich leben, wie das beim Thema Geld gehen soll, ist mir noch schleierhaft. Im Energiesektor scheinen sich ja Lösungen abzuzeichnen seit dem 16.10. 20 Uhr.
      Wut, die Wut der Mütter und Frauen, ja auf wen denn, auf sich selbst, dass man sich so beeinflussen und unterdrücken ließ?
      In spirituellen Kreisen, in die ich seit 2008 etwas Einblick bekam, kommt man auch nicht aus dem “Geldsystem” heraus, beim Bön Retreat mit dem höchsten Dzogchen Meister stritten sich hinten in der Ecke Männer, wer wo welche Bücher verkaufen dürfte…ich war verwirrt….
      Die anderen Hansas, so dachte ich, sitzen herum und meditieren sich ins Nirvana, bis sie wieder Hunger haben und nach Hause zu Frau oder Mutti zum Essen gehen, die derweil alles lästige Irdische erledigen durfte…
      Vielleicht war es doch keine sooooooo gute Idee so viele Frauen zu verbrennen und damit so viel Wissen und sie von Bildung abzuschneiden, “jetzt verziehen dumme Frauen unsere Söhne”, stammt nicht von mir, ich zitiere hier einen türkischen Mann, den ich vor einiger Zeit traf.
      Vater, Mutter, Sohn und Tochter und dann ein balancierter heilige Geist…mehr Gerechtigkeit, Wärme und Achtung vor dem Leben.
      Dieser völlig unkontrollierte Zuzug von Menschen bringt schon Gefahren mit sich, vor allem so lange, wie die wirklichen Hintergründe weder gesehen noch verstanden werden.
      Dieser Kinderarzt hat auch den Müttern erklärt: Wissen sie, es ist nicht gut, wenn sie ihr Kind auf dem Schoß haben, wenn ich ihm vielleicht etwas weh tun muss, es entwickelt dann ambivalente Gefühle zu ihnen, weil sie es nicht vor Schmerzen beschützen. Er berichtete davon, dass er es wirklich schwer habe, das den Müttern begreiflich zu machen.
      Im ZDF sagten sie, da gab es Abraham und Gott verlangte von ihm seinen Sohn zu opfern, Josi stand fassungslos vor dem Fernseher, sie hörte das zum ersten mal….
      Wir waren heute seit langer Zeit mal wieder zusammen spazieren im Park.
      Vielleicht habe ich aber auch etwas rückständige Gedanken und meine Erkenntnisse sind längst überholt und überflüssig.

      Mir persönlich hilft das Tara-Mantra und auch mal der Pele- Ritual-Tanz (für Kraft statt explodierender Wut) und der Wald und euer Blog!!!

      lass uns lieber beim Positiven bleiben. Natürlich hast du in allem in deinem Kommentar Recht. Aber wenn wir uns auf diese Punkte konzentrieren, werden wir leicht starr und verbittert. Du bist in der glücklichen Lage, nicht in diese Falle wie so viele zu tappen.
      Siri und Selma meinen immer: “Nicht Liebe und Lust vergessen und immer etwas kindlich bleiben.” Das ist ihr Rezept – naja …

    • Es hat schon ein wenig weh getan, dass manche mir sehr nahe stehenden Personen, nur weil ich meine Augen für das “Dunkle” geöffnet habe und die Fallen wahr genommen habe, in die man tappen kann, dachten, dass man mit mir jetzt keinen “Spaß” mehr haben kann. Scheinbar dachten sie, mein Leben sei völlig ohne Schwere und easy und nur voller Freude, weil ich doch so “gut drauf” war. Wie lustig ist das denn!?
      Ich sang vor mich hin ” If you don´t know me by now”, es half über die “Schmerzen”
      Von Verbitterung kann nicht die Rede sein, auch kein Triumph, weil sich zeigte, dass ich “Recht” hatte in manchem…
      Nur weiter Freude am Sein kultivieren, tanzen, singen, kreativ sein, den Träumen folgen, Hoffnung verbreiten, etwas anderes habe ich nicht im Sinn. Freue mich über jede neue Erkenntnis und ganz einfache Dinge. Z.B. gestern über meine Erkenntnisse über das Wort “atavistisch”
      Noch ein Gedanke, wenn die Guten schwach sind, wie du schreibst…was ist, wenn jemand wirklich “gut” ist und sich deshalb einfach nicht vorstellen kann, dass manche nichts “Gutes” im Schilde führen…z.B. manche dieser Kinder hier…
      Eine schönes Gespräch mit einer 4jährigen letzte Woche: Du Pia, weißt du schon, dass es in echt Räuber gibt? P: Ja, habe ich schon mal gehört.
      K: Ich habe Angst vor denen, warum sind die so böse? P: Weißt du, vielleicht ist es so wie beim Kasperletheater, einer muss den “Räuber” spielen.
      Etwas Intelligenteres ist mir nicht eingefallen fürs erste, überlege weiter.

    • Oh dear, liebe Pia,
      das ist ja echt eine schwierige Frage: “Warum sind manche Menschen böse?”
      Darauf wüßten wir auf die Schnelle auch keine Antwort. Klar, es gibt psychologische Erklärungen, aber das Böse an sich können die auch nicht beantworten. Im modernen Krimi wird Bosheit fast immer letztlich auf sozialpsychologische Verhältnisse zurückgeführt, seit Sjöwall & Walhöö (Komissar Martin Beck) wurde dies geradnezu zelebriert.
      Hier lautet die Frage, warum wird eine Person rassistisch – und wenn wir ganz ehrlich sind, müssen wir fragen, warum lebt in uns allen auch zumindest ein kleiner Rassist? Freuds Antwort war, weil wir Angst vorm Anderen und Fremden haben, was Jung als archetypisch ansehen würde. Spätere Sozialpsychologen antworteten, weil das entsprechende Individuum in seiner Sozialisation kein Selbstwertgefühl vermittelt bekommen hat. Aber eigentlich befriedigt diese Antwort ja nicht. Siri und Selma fragten sogleich “und warum haben ihre Eltern denen kein Selbstwertgefühl vermittelt?” und so kann man natürlich immer weiter fragen und würde letztendlich darauf kommen, dass es das Böse an sich geben muss – ganz im theologischen Sinn: ohne Gott keinen Teufel. Vielleicht weil Leben Spannung ist (nicht nur Hegels und Nietzsches Ansicht). Gnostiker des Mittelalters gingen davon aus, dass durch diese Spannung erst Freiheit entsteht. Populäre Auslegungen der Psychoanalyse gehen davon aus, dass sexuelle Frustration Bosheit erzeugt.
      Wir Fab Four wagen uns nicht, hierzu eine klärende Meinung zu haben. Wir finden deine Antwort an die Vierjährige prima. Wenn wir das Böse auch nicht erklären können, so pflegen wir im Grunde ebenfalls deine Haltung, wir nehmen es wahr, ohne uns davon unsere Lebensfreude rauben zu lassen.

      Masterchen meint: “Dieses Schwarz-Weiß-Denken ist unrealistisch, wir sind alle Grau!”
      Und Goethe meinte: “Wer immer strebend sich bemüht, den können wir erlösen.” Also sind die Streber gut? 😉

    • Danke lieber Klausbernd, du hast mir wieder sehr geholfen! Gestern konnte ich zwei Schülerinnen( endlich) helfen, einfach damit, dass das Wort Frustration gefallen ist.
      Die eine seit Jahren verschlossen und aggressiv, die andere seit Jahren, kalt und weinerlich – endlich, es ist mir gelungen sie zum Lachen (über sich selbst) zu bringen.
      Dankeschön! Auch die anderen waren wie befreit, denn endlich verstanden sie, was mit ihren beiden Kolleginnen eigentlich los war.
      Prima!
      Kleine Kinder haben mir letzte Woche sehr viel über Paris erzählen wollen, dem Eiffelturm , den runden Straßen im Vergleich zu den Mannheimer Quadraten, ein Mädchen wollte unbedingt das Vaterunser beten und dann noch etwas auf arabisch, ich fragte sie, ob sie den wissen, was sie da sprach, denn sie hat einen türkischen Vater und betet auf arabisch, was sie ja gar nicht versteht.
      Außerdem zerriss sie ihre Strumpfhose mal wieder, ihre Mutter kauft ihr dann nämlich einfach neue…..
      Ich bin manchmal sprachlos und staune.
      Ob man diese grünen Geldscheine dem Esel einfach ins Maul stopfen kann und dann hinten wieder Goldmünzen herauskommen?
      So, ihr lieben Feen, ihr Wundertollen!

    • Das ist ja witzig, liebe Pia, dass du den Dukaten scheißenden Goldesel anführst. Ich arbeite nämlich gerade emsig einen großen Vortrag über “Urin & Kot” aus, den ich am 1. Dezember in der Schweiz halten werde. Da wird natürlich dieser Goldesel auch erwähnt.
      Naja, zum Beten im Islam: Mädchen und Frauen müssen es nicht verstehen, sondern tun. Well …
      Auch dir ein wunderbares Wochenende. Halte uns bitte fest die Daumen, dass wir keine Schäden haben werden, hier ist nämlich ein mächtiger Sturm angesagt.

I have been so impressed and moved by the Norwegian people’s dignified response to the appalling tragedy of Utoya, and am so heartened that many Europeans are welcoming refugees — though much ashamed that the UK has not done so. Nor has my adopted country, New Zealand. I’m constantly reminded of the words — all that is required for evil to prevail is that good men do nothing. Evil must be rubbing it’s hands together in glee in many places right now. All my best wishes, Su

      we strongly agree: all that is required for evil to prevail is that good men do nothing.
      Well, we think the UK has the problem that not only it isn’t imporant in Europe any more but more so it is a poor country. Like the eastern European countries it cannot afford the refugees. Psychologically quite a lot of the British suffer of the loss of their colonies still. This loss of their identity seems to make them very much afraid of foreign infiltration.

    • I think you are completely right. Many British still like to think of themselves as colonial masters and are completely out of touch with the world as it really is. My mother and siblings live in England, and I miss them terribly, but I don’t think I could live in the UK again.

  16. My wonderful Bookfayries and dear friends,
    Utøya made a deep impact on the Norwegians. Like Dina, I was deeply touched and felt proud to be a part of the nation at that time, for all the reasons that Jens Stoltenberg mentioned.
    Now the time has come to stand together and show the world what true dignity, kindness and solidarity really mean. We still have a long way to go! Norwegian journalists are very much focused on the costs of the refugees. Maybe Erns Solberg’s visit to a nearby-Syrian camp with 320 000 refugees today will make a diffrence.

      We suppose Norway as Germany can afford many refugees. And one must see that in these rich European countries we need the refugees. It’s mostly young people streaming in with kids. That’s what we desperately need in our overaged societies.

      in case you are interested, there are two books about Grace O’Malley or Granuaile (her nickname):
      Cook, Judith: Pirate Queen (Mercier Press, Cork/Ireland 2004)
      Chambers, Anne: Granuaile Sea Queen of Ireland (Collins Press, Cork/Ireland 2006)
      Grace O’Malley was a great gambler as well and also called “Grace of the Gamblers”.
      This clever woman living from 1530-1603 was quite a character. Her life is very well documented.

      Grace O’Malley is really not that known like all the female pirates except May Read and Anne Bonny. Our Master is a kind of specialist of female piracy. He lectured about it and wrote a long chapter about female pirates in one of his much too long papers (about 100 pages). Don’t worry not to know Grace, she is known to specialists only.

    • I will ask my friend who has been the leader of our group of friends who they initially contacted to begin the process. I believe it was through a government department in Canada. I will send an email right now and get back to you.
      I’m not sure if these were Canadian rules but we had to commit to supporting the family for a year, providing housing, clothing, basically everything and show that we had a set amount of money available for the family to live. At any rate I will find out what I can.

    • I just heard back from The woman who started our request and she said the way she got going was she Googled “how to sponsor a refugee family in Canada”. She was surprised at the information right at her finger tips. She also said that by also approaching a bit for profit group who may be already bringing in refugees and getting under their umbrella can be helpful. In our case we are under the umbrella of a large church. Our little group is still responsible for the family when they arrive but this has helped with some of the logistics.

      I hope you are able to find similar avenues in your country. I am happy to hear of your plans and wish you all the best. Let’s keep in touch on this.

      your commitment seem to be different to what we have in mind: you see, in Germany we already have close to one million refugees, it’s a big number, hard to cope with – for years to come. I met Joan today and told her about your plans and the Canadian rules:

      Joan is supporting 22 families today, giving them practically 75% or more of her free time. She helps to find private housing (paid by the government!) for the small families, she helps them with the authorities, goes to the doctors with them, translates, helps the children to find a school, helps them to learn the German language, show them where to shop and handle the money get and inform them how things work in Germany and what doesn’t … If three families are put together in one house, you can be almost sure they don’t live together in harmony. Sad to say, lots of Joan’s time is spent on restoring peace, but she is successful 🙂 and very happy with her work. “It gives my life a new meaning!” But she ist NOT finically liable and she gives no guarantees. How could she? We have thousands of jung men here. They want their families in camps in other countries to join them here and it’s difficult to foresee what will be in 6 months. In Germany we have a big problem finding housing for the refugees because of numerous reasons.
      Sweden has similar problems. Sweden has 8 million citizens (Germany 80 mill.) and has already 200 000 refugees. It’s a matter of getting them all indoors before the winter arrives. I must admit, I have no idea how many refugees have been welcomed in the UK, in general they are not welcome and we’d very much like to statue an example and welcome a family to come an live with us. Actually, you have made the obvious visible and also maybe possible; – who knows? 🙂 , thank you so much, Sue.

    • Dina I can not imagine the situation in Germany and am in no position to speak to it. The challenges enormous.

      I suspect each country has rules to follow and due to our geographic location, the government needs to arrange for transport of refugees here. The rules of everything that must be then provided is set forth by the Canadian government.

      I hope I have not be ought confusion to the discussion. All I can speak of is our little group sponsoring one family. Such a small drop in a bucket of need.

  25. The world is not getting easier to live in…despite the statistics that say so. Jens Stoltenberg is a great man, and he is doing a great job whatever position he is holding. What happened in Norway will never be forgotten – neither the way he and you all handled the situation.
    Right now the situation with refugees in Sweden is getting out of hand. Too many people are coming, thousands every day, and we have not enough places to shelter them through the coming winter. Our authorities say that they hope they will manage this, but need a pause now to arrange for the newcomers who are already here. They are doing a great job, but ordinary people are very worried about how our country will manage this fast flow of immigrants.

      it’s quite similar in Germany as well. It’s important to find a (European) solution how to deal with these masses soon. As longer as no solution is found as bigger the danger of neo-Nazi influence is. Right now the majority of people is helpful and kind, but that can change quickly as history showed.

    • True – a solution has been suggested by the UN – but things must be decided fast now. Like you say, most people are very helpful, but here we have had for example some fires in some camps.

    • Unfortunately fire raising of refugee’s homes gets more and more widespread in Germany as well. And then masses demonstrate mostly in east Germany shouting “we are the people” wanting Germany for the Germans. Oh dear, I don’t want to be ruled by those people’s will.
      Well, that’s the shadow side of the reactions to the masses of refugees.
      But it’s a minority – but a growing one.

      Ganz herzlichen Dank für dein Lob. Wir haben das Gefühl, dass wir uns in irgendeiner Weise engagieren müssen und so ist dieser Blog zumindest ein kleiner Schritt. Wir hätten ein schlechtes Gefühl, einfach über Blümchen und Herbstblätter zu bloggen, als ob nichts geschehen würde. Der Schwan auf dem ersten Bild sollte u.a. diese Haltung ‘den Kopf in den Sand stecken’ (hier in die Federn) ironisieren.

    • Vielen Dank, lieber Klausbernd, auch für die Besserungswünsche, gerade bin ich wieder etwas müde, aber ich hatte einen sehr, sehr schönen Tag!
      Ich kann euer Bedürfnis etwas beizutagen nur zu gut verstehen, mir geht es da nicht anders und ich schrieb nun doch schon den einen und anderen Artikel aus eigenem Empfinden heraus zu Heimat, zu Flucht, zu Ruinen, machte Fotomontagen zu dem Elend auf dem Mittelmeer, etc. aber so ganz zufrieden macht mich das alles nicht- vor allen Dingen nicht, wenn ich bei fb bin und lese was da so abgeht, da wird mir wirklich ganz anders. Aber ich will mich auch nicht instrumentalisieren lassen- oft ist die sogenannte Linke nicht viel besser in ihren Hasstiraden- wir müssen lernen uns gegenseitig zuzuhören, das mal zu allererst, wir müssen die Sorgen der sogenannten WutbürgerInnen ernst nehmen, denn so einfach, wie es uns nun auch oftmals verkauft wird, ist die Situation mit den vielen Flüchtlingen nicht. Besonnenheit braucht es, kluge und klare Köpfe und das Engagement von jeder und jedem auf ihre und seine ganz persönliche Weise und in den eigenen Qualitäten … oder?!

      ich finde dein Engagement wirklich toll, DANKE.
      ‘Wutbürger’ das Wort kannten ich noch gar nicht. So geht’s einem, wenn man als Expat lebt.
      Ich gebe dir völlig recht, Zuhören und das Verständnis aller Seiten tut Not. Immer, wenn nicht mehr differenziert argumentiert wird, wenn’s gar fanatisch wird, wird’s gefährlich.
      Zugegeben, wir haben ja hier leicht reden, da wir nicht betroffen sind. Wir bekommen das Flüchtlingsdrama nur aus der Ferne mit.

Ich erlaube mir folgende Geschichte zu zitieren, die ich im Buch “Über Gott und die Welt” von Peter Bichsel gelesen habe und, die mich noch immer bewegt: “Eines Tages kommt eine ältere Rentnerin, in die Kantine, sie findet sich nicht gut zurecht, aber sie holt sich dann eine grosse Gulaschsuppe, geht zurück zu einem freien Tischchen, stellt die Suppe auf den Tisch und merkt, dass sie den Löffel vergessen hat, und sie geht zurück und holt den Löffel und wie sie an ihr Tischen zurückkommt, sitzt da ein bumlanger Neger und isst ihre Suppe. Die Frau setzt sich völlig verschüchtetert an den Tisch, versucht mit dem Schwarzen zu sprechen, er versteht kein Wort, und die Frau langt mit dem Löffel über den Tisch und isst jetzt auch von ihrer Suppe. Jetzt schiebt der Schwarze den Topf in die Mitte, und sie essen gemeinsam. Sie lächeln sich zu, und die anderen Leute in der Kantine beobachten das seltsame Paar, das aus einem Topf isst. Der Neger steht auf, holt ein Schnitzel mit Pommes frites und stellt auch das in die Mitte, und die alte Frau ist nun entschädigt für ihren Verlust, und sie essen geminsam aus demselben Teller und lächeln sich zu und freuen sich. Wie der Teller leer ist, steht der Schwarze auf, nickt der Frau freundlich zu und geht. Den Zusachauern ist aufgefallen, dass er das Lokal sehr schnell verliess. Nach ein paar Sekunden schreit die Frau auf und ruft: “Meine Handtasche ist weg und mein Pelzmalntel”, und ein paar rennen dem Schwarzen nach, aber sie finden ihn nicht mehr, und schon ruft man die Polizei, und alle sind entsetzt, und die alte Frau ist verzweifelt. Da sagt jemand: “Aber an einem anderen Tisch ist ja ein Mantel und eine Handtasche der alten Frau, und auf dem Tisch steht noch ihre Suppe. Sie hat den Tisch verwechselt, und nicht der Schwarze hat ihre Suppe gegessen,, sondern sie die Suppe des Schwarzen.” Manchmal meinen wir zu geben, aber in Wirklichkeit bekommen wir etwas!

  28. A thought-provoking post. We are living through extraordinary times for those of us born after the second world war, though I recall during the 1960’s the threat of a nuclear war and the end of life as we knew it. I sincerely hope we will not return to those fears, but…
    We can but live each day and behave to others as we wish to be treated ourselves, with love, with compassion, with cake 🙂

      The attitude you praise “behave to others as we wish to be treated ourselves” was basic for the influencial German philosopher Immanuel Kant in the 18th c. But studying history this seemed to be forgotten. On the other hand quite a lot of German volunteers helping the refugees argue that their parents have been refugees as well after the war and they were helped too.

But living in England I notice that people are afraid of the refugees. Well, England has lost its identity and therefore they try to hold on to an Englishness that’s long gone.

    • I have been following this issue closely for it is a global challenge. I have been reviewing John Haywood’s “The Great Migrations – From the Earliest Humans to the Age of Globalization” which has provided me with greater insight. It gives a brief account of 50 mass movements of peoples, from the Celts to The Trail of Tears to The Second World War and its aftermath. Migrations will continue and, as you said so eloquently, what was once, is no more. Migrations have been the greatest driver of historical change. The questions before us as we consider the future will challenge us all to be active participants. Another great post, another great dialogue!   31. A very moving tribute Dina – I remembered the attacks but had to look them up for details. Such sadness. Somehow that children should be the victims makes it that much more tragic. Thank you for the reminder of how important it is to live every day and to hold a place in our hearts for those who have lost loved ones.

  39. We are all descendants of nomads. This struggle is as old as humankind itself. When approached by strangers in the cold, dark night, do we share our fire circle out of kindness or deny it out of fear? How we answer that question is as important as the fire we guard.

      a lot of European people have been refugees during and after WWII. For example nearly every German we know had at least one person in their family who was a refugee not longer than one generation ago. But you are right it is an ancient conflict with whom we will share our life. As we wrote above, sharing with others brings inspiration, and if we look at the history of refugees we see Einstein, Freud, Thomas and Klaus Mann, Bert Brecht, Schönberg and many other who all fled their fatherland and contributed to the culture of their new home.

    • Yes, absolutely. It is this ideal of sharing with and accepting immigrants that my country was built on. Sadly, many here have forgotten that there ancestors came here from somewhere else. Even those we call Native Americans are descendants of peoples that crossed over from Asia or Polynesia or ,some evidence now suggests, even earlier wanderers from Europe.

  48. Our post is getting an unexspected up-to-datness after the terror attacs in Paris last night. We very much hope that the European people will react sober minded like the Norwegians in 2011. Even for us Bookfayres it’s obvious that the aim of these attacts is provoking riots against refugees.

    Nach den Anschlägen von Paris gestern Abend bekommt unsere Post eine ungeahnte Aktualität. Wir hoffen, dass sich die Bevölkerung Europas in ihrer Reaktion ein Beispiel an die Norweger nimmt. Selbst uns Buchfeen scheint es offensichtlich, dass wir uns nicht zu fremdenfeindlichen Ausschreitung provozieren lassen dürfen, was nach Dina und Masterchen das Ziel dieser Angriffe ist.

      I agree. Of course these terrost attacs take place in France where Marine Le Pen and the National Front is alarmingly strong. There is a big danger of stupid counter reactions. Unfortunately France very much different to the much more liberal Norway.
      In my country the danger comes from the north where we have quite strong neo fascist groups.
      Let’s hope for the best.

      zuerst einmal glauben wir nicht, dass es hier um einen Religionskrieg geht. Wir meinen damit, dass die Religion nur als Vehikel benutzt wird, um Macht auszuüben. Bei den Kreuzzügen ging’s ja auch eigentlich nicht um Relgion, sondern um imperialistische und ökonomische Interessen wie überdeutlich u.a. die Abmachungen zwischen Venedig und dem Kreuzfahrerheer zeigten. Auch hier geht es unseres Erachtens um imperialistische Politik, Ost gegen West, und dahinter stehen letztlich auch ökonomische Interessen.
      Naja, das ist unsere unmaßgebliche Meinung.

    • Danke für den guten Text, lieber Achim, hatte gerade noch eine Schülerin hier, die von Donnerstag auf Freitag vom Attentat in Paris voraus geträumt hat…..musste ein wenig getröstet werden…..
      Kbs Meinung, zu den verschiedensten Themen, wird hier hoch geachtet.
      Heute waren alle gruselig brav im Ballettsaal, man könnte auch sagen, irgendwie froher, dankbar tanzen zu dürfen, aufmerksam, gelehrsam, folgsam, es war merkwürdig!
      Keine Kämpfe.
      Ich sagte nur zu einer Verbissenen: Du musst das hier nicht so ernst nehmen, sie spielen Starwars und Monopoly, da wirst du doch eine Tanzstunde nicht so tierisch ernst nehmen?! Sonst ging´s heute…..

Frankreich rüstet auf – zum Krieg und Gegenanschläge und auch die NATO sind (vor)bereit … Stunde um Stunde wird F. Hollande kräftiger und machtvoller in seiner Anforderungen.

    • Liebe Dina, das habe ich auch verfolgt, vollkommen verrückt! 3 Wochen vor der Wahl, haben sie auch gesagt.
      Von Freiheit kann in Deutschland nicht die Rede sein….alle sind zu beschäftigt, sich wirklich zu informieren oder zu ängstlich für die Wahrheiten…
      Heute muss ich an meinen Button an der Outsider Jeans-Jacke denken, die ich mit 14 trug, als ich noch durchblickte: Stell dir vor es ist Krieg und keiner geht hin
      Der einfachste Weg für alle scheint immer noch der zu sein, Feindbilder aufzubauen und nichts zu kapieren!
      Heute Nacht war ich in Peru, hatte einen Traum für mein Kronenchakra bestellt, das war wirklich interessant, danke für die tolle Affirmation, lieber Klausbernd.
      So, es muss getanzt werden….
