It was one of those March days when the sun shines hot and the wind blows cold:
when it is summer in the light, and winter in the shade.
Charles Dickens
Charles Dickens
The three great elemental sounds in nature are the sound of rain,
the sound of wind in a primeval wood,
and the sound of outer ocean on a beach.
Henry Beston
Visitors come to our part of North Norfolk for its soft, sandy beaches, wild marshland with the best banks for bird watching, vast skies and pretty flint-built coastal villages. It also happens to be one of the emptiest stretches of coastline in England – with enough space to find an isolated picnic spot even in the height of summer.
Last week we tested the wintery wind, covered up to our sweet fairy faces, in Happisburgh and Horsey Gap closer to the Norfolk Broads. Beautiful dunes, sandy beaches and a very genuine oceanic feeling, we loved it. And we know you will too. – By the way do you know how Happisburgh is pronounced? Come on say it! Wrong! It’s Hazeboro.
The pronounciation of English names is quite a mystery – not only for foreigners like us. Next to our village Cley (pronounced kleɪ like eye) there is Wiveton village. Nearly no English speaker can pronounce it correctly as Weewəton. Near Norwich you find the old market town of Wymondham, where Bill Bryson used to live, which is pronounced wɪndəm. – Did you come across such strange pronounciations of names as well?
See you on the beach soon, spring is on it’s way!
Bis dann am Strand; der Frühling kommt!

Stunning images as always, Dina. They look like paintings, wonderful indeed. The pronunciation of place names is a problem all over the UK, not just in Norfolk. Add some Scottish and Northern Irish places into the mix, and it gets even more confusing. Regional accents, illiteracy, and corrupted spellings have all combined to give us this legacy of unusual written/spoken names for towns and villages. I used to always get Kirkcudbright in Scotland wrong. It is pronounced ‘Kerkubree.’
Love from Beetley (Beat-Lee, not Beetle-ey…) Pete and Ollie. X

Hi, dear Pete,
well, we are not that sure if we are allowed to write about it. But we had a funny experience with Kirkcudbright. When we visited Scotland our dear Master told Dina about Kirkcudbrightshire and ask her if we should go back home having a look around there. He knows this area quite well because he had friends living there. Dina looked in the map and was sure that our Master was remembering that incorrectly. “Age!” she thought. She couldn’t find this part of Scotland neither on our map nor in our SatNav because she had no idea that it was written in this way.

And Costessey is Cossy. Some people call Stiffkey Stewkey and its cockles are known as Stewkey Blues (there’s also the true story of Harold Davidson, its vicar, who was defrocked, was killed by a lion during his later career as a lion tamer) Weybourne is sometimes called Webburn.

Dear Paul,
we actually wrote a blog about Harold Davidson at the beginning of our blogging career
https://kbvollmarblog.wordpress.com/2011/07/18/der-pfarrer-von-stiffkey/
Well, Stiffkey had quite some special folks living there like Henry Williamson, the bestselling author who was spellbound by Hitler until Williamson died in 1977. There is not only a blue plaque on one of the houses you can also see the swastika which the communist blacksmith painted on Williamson’s farm – well you you have to scrutinize the wall but then you will see it. And Tarka the Otter lived in Stewkey river, of course.
The village sign of Stiffkey shows nowadays both names STIFFKEY and down under STEWKEY.
Weyborn around the corner from us pronounced Webborn, well, that’s lazyness, isn’t it?!

I loved the Charles Dickens quote (did Dina find that gem) which blends beautifully into the photo. Ah, my dear Fab Four of Cley – you do live in a spectacular place. I especially appreciated your discussion on how difficult it is to pronounce certain words. When I was young, many teachers thought I had difficulty with certain words – which I did. I practiced and practiced and practiced, which allowed me to understand how our tongues and mouth formations create sounds. But then, as you are so very much aware, communication is much more than pronounciation. Always, always a joy to visit. Many hugs coming across the ocean.

Our dear friend Clanmother,
you got it right, Dina found that Charles Dickens quote. Dina is not only our photographer she is our specialist for quotes as well. Every time we see a book of quotes we get for our dear Dina. She has a huge collection already.
We all four have problems pronouncing even the `normal´ English words. We think the pronounciation is the hardest to master for foreigners like us. We all make mistakes and have quite an accent but as we don’t mind we noticed the native speakers don’t mind neither. As you said there is more to communication than pronounciation and actually than words as well.
We send our dear Canadian friend very warm greetings from the sunny coast of North Norfolk
Hugs and xxxx

Such beautiful photos. I love the way English place names are such a trap for young players. When I first moved to England, I provided hours of entertainment for my workmates mispronouncing Beauchamp Place (Beecham); Bicester, Towcester (Bister, Toaster — really???) and then when I thought I had that one sussed, Cirencester turned out to actually be pronounced Cirencester. Sigh.

Guten Abend, liebe Gartenfee
An unserer Küste z.B.

Beuatiful and perfect combination of words and images as always, Fab Four.
The lists of English personal and place names whose pronunciations are counterintuitive to their spelling are quite funny, because the pronunciation does not correspond to the spelling, or because a better known namesake has a markedly different pronunciation. On my first visit to Norfolk I didn’t get Norwich (ˈnɒrᵻdʒ) and Hunstanton (ˈhʌnstən) right. 🙂

A wonderful taste of Norfolk with it’s gentle colours and windswept scenery! I used to live in St Ives – west of Cambridge, and also in Ramsey. The fens have their own beauty with the most wonderful sunsets, and a great feeling of openness and space. Previously I’d lived for fifteen years in British Columbia, in the mountains, so it was a huge transformation, and simply a different beauty. We often biked down to Hunstanton for fish and chips and a bit of sea air, and my friend used to go kite-surfing at Brancaster!

We had a “Dickens” day here today. Wind, sun, sleet, hail and then sun again. Interesting that Dickens’ writing was the same way, in that it often revealed an unlikely warm place in an otherwise cold, cold world.

Good morning, dear Thorsaurus,
we like that Dickens is always human and he is a great observer.
The weather is quite boring here today: grey, no wind but chilly – not at all a Dickens day 😉
All the best

Great pictures and perfect words to go with them. Davy D’s comment about us liking to write long words but not waste too much energy saying them is spot on 😀

Dad thinks English is the daftest language in the world! Polish is so logical, according to him. The fact that few English people can pronounce it? Well- that’s their problem! 🙂 🙂 Many thanks for cheering me up with your beautiful photos on another grey English day.

Dear Jo,
your father shares his idea with some linguists who are saying the same. In comparison to other languages English has a simplistic grammar and alogical phonetics, they say. Well, we don’t know …
We had a sunny day today which we spent in our garden.
Sending you some sun as well

Love this post! “Summer in the sunlight, winter in the shade”—a perfect description of March. And the month’s famous wind (lions!) is obvious in the grass. Happy Spring! 🙂 🙂

Guten Morgen, liebe Eva,

Gorgeous photos! I love nothing better than an empty and isolated beach!

Dear Elizabeth,
sorry, not having answered your kind commentary before.
Now is the time of the year when all the beaches are empty. Walking on the beach you don’t exspect to meet someone. Even during the summer holiday season it’s never crowded.
Thanks and all the best
