We like the thought of a writer being a lighthouse keeper, out there just by himself. Getting his ideas from his inner light and not from all the people around him.

Wir lieben die Vorstellung eines Autors als einsamen Leuchtturmwärter. Er bekommt seine Ideen von seinem inneren Licht und nicht von den Menschen seiner Umgebung.

There are quite some lighthouses on the rough coast of North Norfolk but Happisburgh Lighthouse is the only independently operated lighthouse in Great Britain. It’s also the oldest working lighthouse in East Anglia, it‘s 135 ft hight and its light reaches 14 miles.

In 1987 Happisburgh was one of five lighthouses declared redundant. Deactivation was planned for 1988. Villagers organised a petition to oppose the closure and we bookfayries helped as well. The date was postponed. Didn’t we do well? 🙂

An der rauen Küste Nord Norfolks gibt es einige Leuchttürme. Das Happisburgh Lighthouse ist jedoch der einzige unabhängig und zugleich älteste betriebene Leuchtturm Großbritanniens. Seine Höhe beträgt 41,1 m und sein Licht reicht etwa 25 km weit.

1987 wurde dieser Leuchtturm für überflüssig erklärt, weswegen er 1988 stillgelegt werden sollte. Die Dorfbewohner beantragten die Schließung ihres Leuchtturms zurückzunehmen. Wir Buchfeen halfen dabei mit dem Ergebnis, dass das Schließungsdatum vertagt wurde. Haben wir das nicht gut gemacht? 🙂

Why do we love lighthouses? Because they shine like a star for the traveller at night, as the German poet Goethe wrote in his diary? Because they provide orientation and don’t let us go astray?

Warum lieben wir Leuchttürme? Weil sie sternengleich dem nächtlich Reisenden entgegenleuchten, wie Goethe es in seinem Tagebuch vermerkte? Weil sie uns eine Richtung geben und uns nicht verirren und scheitern lassen?

The male and female lighthouse keeper is often seen as the heroic saviour of lives like Grace Darling who was praised by Wordsworth in his romantic poem “Grace Darling“. Besides lighthouse keepers are seen as archetypal lonely people.

Idawalley Zorada Lewis is next to G. Darling the most famous of all female lighthouse keepers. She was visited by President Grant to congratulate her in 1924. Being lighthouse keeper of the Lime-Rock-Lighthouse (Newport/Rhode Island) she rescued many lives. The lighthouse was named after her in 1942 being the only lighthouse named after its keeper.

Idawalley Zorada Lewis gilt neben G. Darling als die berühmteste Leuchtturmwärterin. Sie wurde 1924 von Präsident Grant besucht und beglückwünscht. Sie hatte als Wärterin des Lime-Rock-Leuchtturms (Newport/Rhode Island) viele Menschenleben gerettet. 1942 wurde der Leuchtturm nach ihr benannt. Das war das einzige Mal, dass ein Leuchtturm offiziell nach seinem Wärter benannt wurde.

      Well, there were a lot of folks wanted to keep that great lighthouse. Now it’s a tourist attraction. At holidays, like the coming week, it’s open for the public. But wow! so many steps to climb for our little feet, next time we will fly up to the top 🙂 🙂

      By the way from our bathroom window we see a kind of lighthouse which is the second tower of Blakeney Church. It’s a small tower with a strong red light installed for navigation. A lot of ship sank on the sand banks here – partly it were the wreckers luring the ships with false lights onto the sand banks.

  3. “Euer” Leuchtturm, Ihr Lieben, sieht prächtig aus und wurde von der lieben Dina mal wieder ganz fantastisch in Szene gesetzt. Auch Mary und ich lieben Leuchttürme, und wir spielen immer noch mit dem Gedanken, auch mal in einem für ein paar Tage zu wohnen. Da gibt es eine Reihe von Angeboten, auch in England.
    Übrigens: wenn ich (besser) kochen könnte – genauer gesagt, ein berufsmäßiger Koch wäre – dann hätten wir vor Jahren wohl einmal ganz ernsthaft auf ein Stellenangebot reagiert, wo für ein kleines B&B in einem Leuchtturm auf einer Insel in der Bucht von San Franzisko eine Bewirtschafterfamilie gesucht wurde. Nur eben mit dem Nachteil, dass jemand da kochen können musste. Hätte uns wirklich gereizt. 😉

      when we came here with our dear Master we could get a lighthouse at the Cornish coast. Ach, wir können ja Deutsch schreiben, also vor etwa 35 Jahren wurden Leuchttürme quasi verschenkt, allerdings mit der Auflage, sie instand zu halten. Eigentlich waren wir Feen soooo inteessiert, aber dann gedachten wir unserer Büchersammlung. Alles runde Regale bauen: a nightmare, isn’t it!
      Hallo, holla wir haben euch überholtmit 17 Grad C heute :-), aber voll langweiliges Wetter: windstill und Hochnebel.

    • Hallo, lieber Pit,
      ja, wie schon unsere liebklugen Kleinfeinfeen schrieben, fast hätten wir einen Leuchtturm in Cornwall bezogen. Aber ich, Klausbernd, bin längst nicht deart handwerklich begabt, dass ich solch einen Leuchtturm ausbauen könnte. Später lernte ich ein Pärchen kennen, die beide Schreiner sind, und selbst sie fluchten bisweilen über die Arbeit, ihren Leuchtturm fein auszubauen. Da muss man ja mehr oder weniger alles selber bauen – oh dear!

      also selber ausbauen – das würde ich ja nie schaffen. Aber das Angebot damals, einen voll ausgebauten Leuchtturm plus Nebengebäude zu übernehmen, das hatte schon was!
      Danke für den Tipp mit der schottischen Westküste. Da oben und auch “unten” im Süden habe ich irgendwo in den Tiefen meiner Festplatte schon zwei Adressen. Mal sehen, ob aus den Plänen jemals Realität wird.

    • Lieber Pit,
      da drücken wir dir gaaanz fest die Daumen! Wir haben leider keine Adresse, hörten nurvon Bekannten davon.
      Einen ausgebauten Leuchtturm zu übernehmen, ja das ist etwas völlig anderes. Ausgebaut ist super! Wenn wohl auf die Dauer die Treppensteigerei zwar fit hält, aber auch nervig werden kann.

      Witzig, gerade fragte die kluge Siri, warum man bei Weihnachten “fröhliche” als Adjektiv benutzt, aber bei Ostern “frohe” – keine Ahnung!

    • Das ist wirklich eine interessante Frage. War mir noch gar nicht bewusst geworden. Da faellt mir gerade ein, im Englischen macht man doch auch einen Unterschied: “Happy Easter”, aber “Merry Christmas”.

      da überlegen wir Expats uns, warum was im Deutschen so heißt. Witzig …
      Mir und selbst unserer klugen Siri ist Unterschied zwischen FROH (happy) und FRÖHLICHE (merry) inhaltlich nicht klar. Fröhliche (merry) ist wohl mehr lustig als froh (happy).

    Actually they planned a wedding at Cley Windmill, but no chance, all booked. Do you know any fine lighhouses suitable for a wedding?

      yes, Cley Mill is THE romantic place for a wedding.
      If we hear about something similar we will tell you.
      The lighthouses we know around here are neither equipped for catering nor for accomodation – except accomodation for ghosts of drowned sailors.

  6. I love lighthouses. Just imagine what a creative mind can do in terms of interior design and decor. The curved walls; the stair case; the view from the top. Who would not want one to create a very unique home? 🙂

    • Well, on one hand we would, on the other we don’t feel fit enough to build f.e. shelves for all our books – to build round shelving, a nightmare. And, of course, it’s not only the shelving. When we could buy a lighthouse for the symboliv sum of 1 GBP, we asked f.e. a heating engeneer and a plumber for an estimate. Unfortunately it was horrendous. But if we would be very rich we surely would move into a lighthouse 🙂 🙂 A very romantic and tempting idea as long as you don’t think about the consequences.

  14. Vielen Dank für diese “Heimleuchtung”. Das ist aber auch ein ganz besonders schöner Leuchtturm. Schon als Kind wollte ich immer einmal in einem Leuchtturm wohnen und stellte es mir kuschelig romantisch vor, so allein mit dem Meer zu sein. Heute darf es auch ein ganz “gewöhnliches Haus” sein, nur der Wunsch und die Sehnsucht nach Meeresnähe ist unverändert geblieben.

      There exist such a lot of heroic as well as horrible stories connected with lighthouses that one cannot know all the names connected with them. We might blog later about more romantic stories connected with English and other lighthouses. Especially Siri and Selma love lighthouses and they cannot stop reading about them.

    Und die fab4 haben wieder sensationell komponiert in Text und Bild!
    Und die vom Schillerplatz hat jetzt wieder einen neuen Ohrwurm: Anke Johannsen “Für alle stillen Helden”
    Ich stelle mir gerade vor wie Dina und KB in einem Leuchtturm sitzen, ganz viele Auszeichnungen für die Rettung Schiffsbrüchiger an den runden Wänden und dann singen sie für Siri und Selma dieses Lied zum Einschlafen…..nee geht ja nicht, keine Bücherregale, keine Bücher, kein Leuchtturm…
    Lift gibt es keinen im Turm?
    So, jetzt muss ich noch ein wenig diesen interessanten Baum neben dem Turm anschauen…..

      Wir finden das auch einen Skandal, dass Leuchttürme keine Aufzüge haben. “Voll doof!”, meinen Sirilein und Selmachen. Und mit den Buchregalen, du grüne Neune! großes Problem.
      Jetzt hast du ja Siri und Selma auf eine Idee gebracht – wir müssen denen jetzt abends in ihren Kuschelbettchen etwas vorsingen.

    • keine schlechte Assoziation, bester Klausbernd.
      Doch gibt es hier in Freiburg keinen Lauchturm, daher bin ich im 3.OG mit meiner Kemenate. Das lange blonde Haar fehlt allerdings auch. Aber die Stille, die habe ich auch. 😉

    • Das wäre doch noch etwas: Einen weitreichenden Leuchtturm auf einem Berg bei Freiburg, damit die Wanderer sich nicht verlaufen 😉
      Ein Feund von uns wohnt in der Sautierstraße, hinter der es ja gleich den Berg hochgeht. Das wäre die richtige Stelle für den Freiburger Leuchtturm 😉

  21. A lighthouse is one of the most profound symbols in my life. When I was in hospital many years ago, I could see the tip of a Vancouver lighthouse from my window; safe harbour, hope, recovery, coming home, all wrapped up in that view. Thank you for reminding me again that a light shines brightly, no matter how dark the storm. Big hugs and lots of love to my dear friends, the Fab Four of Cley!

      the lighthouse is such a basic symbol of giving direction and hope and being cared for that it is nearly archetypal. And as we mostly see its positive side we like it so much. But in a blog to come we will write about the shadow side of lighthouses.

Trotz der schrecklichen Geschichten im Zusammenhang mit Leuchttuermen, habe ich mir immer gewuenscht mich einmal in einen solchen zurueckzuziehen, so alsWaerterin und die Finsternis und Einsamkeit zu geniessen!     • Guten Morgen, liebe Martina,
      ja, hier ist’s auch frühlingshaft warm (17 Grad C) und sonnig, so dass ich gerade meine Wäsche zum Trocknen im Garten aufhing.
      Diese Leuchttürme haben neben ihrer positiven Sehnsuchtsseite auch eine Schattenseite, über die wir demnächst berichten werden.

    • Grace Darling ist eine National Heroine, man lernt ihre Geschichte schon in der Schule. Und einige Autoren haben sich von ihrer Geschichte inspirieren lassen. In Südost-Schottland, nehmen wir an, ist sie begraben. Wir sind nie an hrem Grab gewesen, aber sahen ihren Leuchtturm auf den Farne Islands.

      we have GREAT weather here at the coast of North Norfolk, nearly 18 degrees and sunshine. So I just hang my washing out for quick drying.

      Ihr habt doch in Schleswig-Holstein auch noch einige Leuchttürme, nehmen wir an.
      Naja, wir Buchfeen kämpften mit einem Großteil der Küstenbewohner zusammen. Wir kämpften furios gegen das Vorhaben, für diesen Leuchtturm nichts mehr zu tun, d.h. ihn verfallen zu lassen.

    • Hallo Klausbernd, ja hier gibt es viele schöne Leuchttürme an der Ost- u. Nordseeküste, auch im Raum Schleswig Holstein. Ein paar wenige, kann man sogar von innen betrachten. Euer Buchfeen Einsatz und der der Küstenbewohner zeigt aber auch, dass es sich lohnt, aufzubegehren und sich zu wehren. Ich wünsche euch auch schöne Osterfeiertage. 🙂

  31. Wieder so schöne Fotos ! Leuchttürme müssen unbedingt erhalten werden ( das habt ihr wirklich gut gemacht 🙂 ), sind sie doch damals so wichtige Orientierungspunkte gewesen und haben sicher vielen das Leben gerettet . Ich finde, noch heute strahlen sie Zuverlässigkeit und “Standhaftigkeit” aus und sind obendrein noch eine Augenweide . Viele Grüsse und wunderschöne Ostern für euch !

  32. Wunderschöne Fotos! Ich mag Leuchttürme. Sie strahlen Geborgenheit und Sicherheit aus. Mein Dad fuhr sein ganzen Leben zur See. Als er 80 wurde, schenkte ich ihm ein Buch über Leuchttürme aller Herren Länder. Anhand der Leuchttürme konnte er seine Erinnerungen an all die vielen Seereisen wie ein Puzzle zusammenfügen. Ich wünsche Euch eine schöne K-Woche mit viel frischem Fisch zum Dinner 🙂

    • Ganz herzlich Dank für die Geschichte mit deinem Vater.
      Ja, wie wir schon eben schrieben, jeder, den wir kennen, liebt Leuchttürme. Das wird hier von B&Bs genutzt, die zunehmend in letzter Zeit in Leuchttürmen und Mühlen (in unserem Dorf) eröffneten.
      Den frischen Fisch kaufen wir bei einem Fischer im Nachbardorf, aber leider können nur noch wenige Fischer von ihrem Fang leben. Sie stellten sich deswegen weitgehend auf Hummer- und Krebsfang um.

    • Guten Tag, lieber Ernst,
      wenn ich mich recht erinnere, habt ihr doch am Bodensee auch Leuchttürme – oder? Ich bin vor etwa zehn Jahren (oder länger) regelmäßig viele Male im Jahr über und auf den Bodensee gefahren, daher meine vage Erinnerung. An eindrucksvolle Leuchttürme in der Bretagne können wir uns dagegen noch gut erinnern.
      Wir lieben Leuchttürme und werden auch demnächst nochmal über sie bloggen, nachdem wir die nächsten Tage noch weitere an unserer Küste besuchen werden.

    this is a beautful spot in Norfolk. It’s always a delight to see a lighthouse. Maybe because it is a comforting sign telling us that the calm waters of a welcoming harbour is close at hand?
    I can recommend the film “The Light” to all friends of lights and lighthouses, in German: “Die Frau des Leuchtturmwärters”.

  37. Lighthouses definitely have a romance about them, and you can somehow only imagine a hermit-like person wanting the job of ‘keeper’. I think he would have to be a reader, with piles of books everywhere, or an artist who would be particularly excellent at seascapes!       It would be fine for us living in a lighthouse because we love reading and reading. But what about the bookshelves in a round tower?
      Dina would love it for taking photographs of the changing light reflected by the sea.
      But actually we are not really fit for being hermits.

  38. I wonder if lighthouses especially appeal to people who know themselves to be introverted? Count me in–I’ve always been intrigued by the isolated, contemplative life of the keeper of the light.

      the romantic idea of living in a tower – a lighthouse or a mill – not only attracts introverted people, we suppose. In our imagination we are much more free than in our real actions. But the real life of a lighthousekeeper only attracts the introvert, we are sure.
      We have to admit for us it would be too isolated. We need other people for inspiration and exchange.

  39. There is also a metaphor in seeing the lighthouse as an eye scanning stormy seas for those in distress.

    From our home in Andalucia we can see two lighthouses still operating. One is the lighthouse at Cabo Trafalgar, which gave its name to the famous sea battle in 1805, where Nelson caught the sniper’s bullet that ended his life. The beam from the other lighthouse, near the fishing harbour beyond the pueblo, plays on our bedroom wall throughout night. It’s very comforting.

    Your post reminded me of a novel I recently read titled: The Light Between Two Oceans. The story is about a lighthouse keeper living on a remote island of Australia. The novel has terrific details of what it is like to be “the keeper of the light.”

  42. Yes, you did well to save one of these towers of romance. Here, most lighthouses are automatic or museums or both. At least, many still stand. Thank you for this tribute. The lighthouse shapes and colors stand out so dramatically from the perspectives of your photographs.

  46. Der Leuchtturm ist ja wirklich ein sehr hübscher. Die rot-weißen Streifen; genauso stellt man sich einen Leuchtturm vor. Vielen Dank auch für die interesannten Geschichten drumherum. Vor ein, zwei Jahren habe ich “Der Leuchtturm am Ende der Welt” von Jules Verne gelesen. Schönes Buch. Jules Verne habe ich als Kind viel gelesen. Aber dieses kannte ich noch nicht.

      Wir habe auch Jules Verne gerne gelesen und lesen ihn noch immer gerne. Aber als wir mit Masterchen das letzte Mal in Deutschland waren, konnten wir keine gesammelten Werke von ihm finden. Dieses Leuchtturmbuch von ihm kennen wir auch nicht. Wir haben nur wenige Taschenbuchausgaben von ihm – leider! 😦

      we don’t agree. We suppose that lighthouses are seen as castles and old houses as cutural heritage. The National Trust has already bought lighhouses for preserving them. And if you look around people want old technologies to be conserved. F.e. in Germany in the Ruhr district quite some old mines are seen as world heritage, very well conserved and much visited. We suppose it would be a desaster not to keep our cultural = technical heritage alive. And you can see that people are willing to spend millions for conserving lighthouses, old mills and industrial buildings.

  54. We have our own Newport here on the west coast of America, the rugged Oregon coast. It has two lighthouses only two miles apart! The story goes that the second lighthouse was commissioned to be built farther down the coast, but the ship bringing the supplies unloaded them in the wrong location due to bad weather. Not knowing quite where they were, they built the lighthouse anyway.
    I love the linking between writers and lighthouse attendants. I think both suffer from indulgent romanticism connected to their image but both are worthy professions requiring commitment and hard work, often followed by moments unattainable in any other endeavor.

      we were discussion the question if we would like to live in an isolated lighthouse being writers. Well, first of all we have to tell that this Happisburgh lighthouse is far from being isolated, there is this village Happisburgh in ten minutes reach by foot. Anyway, we would lack inspiration from the outside world to live in an isolated lighthouse f.e. on an island. Especially today action is very much asked for in fiction but if one lives in an isolated surrounding you are not confronted with social action and we suppose that your writing is lacking this action as well. You might write like Joyce with long inner monologues – but this was new in the times of Joyce and Proust, we are living in the times in which Dan Brown and Ken Follett are the darlings of the readers.
      We cannot remember who it was but one of the great English crime ladys move from village to village for every book she wrote. She needed to watch people interacting for inspiration. We are like her, well, not moving all the time, but being inspired by people-watching.

    • This shoemaker was the most influencial philosopher on the continent at the end of the 16th and the beginning of the 17th century. He is seen as one of the great mystics as well. Quite some contemporary philosophers refer to him.
