Learning from Chillbrook

SORRY, we have to disappoint you  😦  we will not comment on the outcome of the EU-referendum. We have the feeling the last word has not been spoken.

Entschuldigung, wenn Ihr etwa einen Kommentar von uns zum EU-Referendum erwartet habt, müssen wir Euch enttäuschen  😦   Wir haben das Gefühl, das letzte Wort ist hier noch nicht gesprochen.

Our dear Dina is learning seriously to photograph, but not without joy. Her teacher is Adrian Theze, you all know him as Chillbrook from Cornwall photographic. With him and his friend we spent a really tremendously great week  🙂  and we all hope for another visit real SOON!!
But, oh dear, Dina will not show her old pictures anymore. She learned that much from Adrian that she is ashamed of her old pictures. But one of us is always a drama queen (or king). 

Unsere liebe Dina ist nun echt ernsthaft, aber nicht freudlos dabei, Fotografie zu lernen. Ihr Lehrer ist Adrian Theze, ihr kennt ihn als Chillbrook, von Cornwall photographic. Mit ihm und seinen Freund verbrachten wir eine wunderschöne Woche  🙂 und hoffen auf eine baldige Wiederholung!!
Aber ach und weh, nun will Dina überhaupt nicht mehr ihre alte Bilder benutzen. Sie hat bei Adrian so viel gelernt, dass sie sich für diese schämt. Naja, einer tusst ja bei uns immer!

  1. Oh! This new picture is very striking. But I want to remain in the audience, and I like her ‘old’ pictures . . . does that leave me with a demerit or worse, prohibited from remaining on board?

      don’t worry, we’re very happy to have you on board! 🙂
      What the three others are referring to, is a blog post we are preparing. To find appropriate photos to frame the words, I had to dig deep into my old files of photos. Looking at those photos today, I refused to use them, because they are not very good; the light is not right and whites in the sky is blown and the photos are not very sharp. After all I have learned since then, and especially after what I have learned from Adrian (Chillbrook) to prevent things like this to happen, I’d not be proud to present them. Klausbernd, Siri and Selma thought I was silly, but it’s more a natural process of learning and going on. When Klausbernd thinks about his first books, he feels the same. 😉

      thank you so much; and yes, you’re right, the old photos show how I’ve improved, It’s a process just like writing. As I wrote to Jeff (above), I refused to used some old photos, because today I can clearly see what I didn’t see at that time.

      we agree with you, the old pictures have a charme of their own. It seems to me that as more technical you get as more their will be a distance between the picture and its object. Well, it’s art but at the cost of the direct touch. It’s another style or kind of photography.

  5. Dina, take it from me, your old photos were excellence personified! I don’t care about your new course, (sorry) because as far as I am concerned, you had little to learn. The new photo is very nice, but am I to be chided, when I say that I think that your other photos were just as good, if not better? You have a natural talent, and a good eye. You really (really) do not need a teacher!
    Sorry you are upset about the EU vote. (I hope that you don’t blame me…) I am sure that you will both be OK, and welcome to stay, whatever happens. If not, I will personally campaign for you both, rest assured!

      what a ghastly weather here at the coast, rather cold and a drizzle.
      Siri and I we fully agree with you! And here a big secret: Dina even has another teacher too. Well, she is very keen …
      But she is so happy learning more and more about photography that we are happy as well. As you do, we don’t think that her pictures are getting better but different. But she is happy and that matters!
      We hope that nothing will change for us with the Brexit. Thank you!

    • Thank you so much for your lovely, heartwarming words, dear Pete. I love to learn more about photography and I deeply admire the work of Adrian. He has come a long way and is the most gifted, natural photographic talent I have ever met.
      Obviously, I don’t reject all my former work, but with the knowledge of today, looking at photos from the past, I can easily recognize so many faults that I’d prefer not to show them. (Like I wrote to Jeff above). This also has to do with my previous camera and a travel zoom lens that I thought was awfully expensive and quite ok at that time, but today I say, It’s not good enough.
      Don’t worry about the EU vote, we’ll not blame you!! 🙂 There are enough others to put the blame on and as they are resigning one by one, it even puts a smile on our faces. And it’s really good to know, that you and Ollie are willing to campaign for us to stay! ❤️ 🙂

    • I couldn’t agree with you more on one level Pete. Dina has an excellent eye and she absolutely has nothing to be ashamed of when looking at her old photographs. However, all photographers, whatever their level can learn from other photographers. It’s not at all unusual for professional photographers to attend workshops given by other professionals because there is always something new to learn, always and it’s simply wrong to suggest otherwise.
      Being out with other photographers taking photographs together is how we evolve and grow and explore our creativity. Workshops are an important part of this process if one is serious and passionate about one’s photography and Dina clearly is. It was a real pleasure to be out with her working together.

    • It’s highly appreciated, dear Pete!
      Actually I’m a bookworm, but for a long time now, I prefer reading photoographic magazines and books, there’s so much new and interesting things to learn! 🙂 And every now and then I need a pause from it to get some distance. We still have some outside painting to do and also the garden demands a lot of tender loving care, so I’d better get started. 🙂

      I have to make clear, we are talking about old photos hat I have not shown you, not the old ones on the blog ..
      They were not my prime choice for the previous posts and now, with more knowledge and an eye that have seen a long process and also a better camera and razor-sharp lenses (providing one knows how to set them as Adrian do), I must admit I feel very reluctant to give in. 😉
      As you say, being a perfectionist is not always a bad thing and also not quite easy … 🙂

    • I would love to have the guidance of a professional photographer. I love taking pictures and, like you, am developing a better eye, but without learning how to improve, so far it has only served to make me more aware of my shortcomings. But this is something to work on in the future. Meanwhile I’ll continue to enjoy your stunning photographs.

    • Ach, das mit der Abwertung der alten Bilder ist reine Tusserei, die auch wieder vergehen wird.
      Dina ist gerade in den Klauen des Ehrgeizes – beneidenswert, wer frei davon – was hilft, dass sie Neues lernt. Aber Neues heißt ja nicht unbedingt Besseres, das wird ihr auch bald klar werden.

    • Ich sehe das anders, es ist keine Tusserei, sondern alte Bilder von früher entsprechen nicht den Stand von heute, da spielen Kamera, Objektive und Wissen eine Rolle. Ich erkenne heute in alten Fotos Fehler in der Komposition, Licht und Farbe und schäme mich nicht darüber, sondern freue mich über den Weg den ich gegangen bin und was ich bis jetzt alles gelernt habe! 🙂

  12. I LOVE Dina’s photos – old or new they are far superior to most photos you see on blogs (mine included). I think we learn all the time and improve as we go on, I cringe at most of my old photos, but without them I’d still be taking bad compositions and blurry shots. Sue is right. The photographic journey continues and I for one look forward to what it brings. Love to the Fab Four – I hope you get some sunshine soon 😀

      your hoping worked: the last three days we had great sunshine 🙂 All in all we were very lucky when Adrian was here as well, most of last week was cloudy, those clouds that photographers like.

  20. I love Dina’s images. I wouldn’t follow this blog without them (sorry, Klausbernd, but my poor eyesight makes it hard to read long paragraphs 🙂 ). The fact is that I love Photography full stop, especially images of landscapes in other countries now that I can’t travel. Everyone has their own style and no doubt, while we amateur photographers could all learn from Chillbrook, we can also learn from Dina.

    The important thing is to keep on taking photos. Keep on doing what you feel passionate about. Keep on sharing your world with the rest of us.

  24. Liebe Hanne, ich finde deine bisherigen Fotos schon sehr gut! Ich bin nun gespannt, was du Neues gelernt hast. Ich denke jedoch, dass du deine bisherigen Fotos nicht verdammen solltest! Auch aus Ihnen hast du viel gelernt und sie beschreiben den Weg!

      Ich weiß, dass du mich verstehst. Du räumst immer auch genadenlos auf und vernichtest was dir nicht länger gefällt. Das finde ich völlig normal. Aber eins haben die drei geschafft; die Kommentatoren loben nicht ausnahmslos “das schöne Bild”. Das findet Klausbernd immer fürchterlich langweilig …

  25. Alte Bilder sind natürlich auch sehr schön, aber man will natürlich immer das Beste und Frischerlernte zeigen. Ist völlig verständlich. Das Foto ist grandios und im Panoramaformat kommt die Weite so richtig gut zur Geltung. Weiter so, liebe Dina!

  26. Hi Hanne! Jedes Bild hat seinen Ort und seine Zeit. Bilder für die Unendlichkeit gehören hierzu. Viel Glück dabei. Wenn ich auch das nicht so Perfekte liebe, weil es Möglichkeiten gibt. Und ich die Art und Weise wie Du die Wellt siehst liebe. In diesem Sinne hoffe ich noch immer auf Bilder für das angesprochene Buch (oder so, Form des Textes ist für mich weiterhin unklar, obwohl der Mabuseverlag interessiert ist). In der zweiten Septemberhälfte fahre ich wieder nach Beverley. Bin gespannt auf alle neuen und weiterhin (alten) schönen Bilder. Klem Ruth ps KB -sehe das wie Du und denke das letzte Wort ist noch nicht gesprochen.Vielleicht ist dies aber auch nur der Wunsch einer alten Angelsächsin, die im düsteren Nachkriegshannover durch unsere Queen Hoffnung erfuhr. Zweimal hat sie mir den Rücken gestärkt. Einmal mit 5 Jahren in meinem Kindergarten – wenn eine Königin Interesse an mir hat!!!!!! Und einmal einige Jahre später im Rathaus als Reporter der Schülerzeitung als sie wissen wollte was ich schreiben werden? Dann gab es in den 80iger Jahren noch einmal einen fernen Kontakt. Moms Gesundheit war uns ans Herz gelegt bei einem Besuch auf dem Petersberg. Von Beverley Seeside gehe ich mit meinen Freunden direkt über Wasser nach Hamburg. Och lite söderut. Jag känner mig som Anglesaxon på sjöss. Min pa var kapitän och min mor satte i himlen. LG

  28. Dear Dina, I couldn’t agree more with the other comments made here, your old photographs are excellent. As photographers we all develop and grow and our work changes and evolves but that takes nothing away from our earlier work though I know only too well how it can feel looking at old work. You have a good eye and you always make the best of a scene and that’s so important. We can all learn and be inspired by working with other photographers, whatever our level and it was wonderful to be out working together with you. It was a real pleasure and I’m so looking forward to when we can do it again.
    Have a great week ahead all of you. I know it’s not nice with all this uncertainty at the moment following that awful vote but I’m sure you have little to worry about. Things will all settle down I am absolutely sure. We are all Europeans at heart and that will win out. 🙂 x

And I have to apologize for the wording of the post; Bookfayries and Master like to provoke and start a discussion, this was by no chance meant to put your work down, not at all. I’m not “ashamed” of my work, I just don’t like certain older photos any longer, and I certainly won’t post them. I think that’s normal, the way any artist, cook, writer and photographer go. But try to tell Bookfayries this … Yesterday evening the four of us went for a long walk looking without a camera and we saw a lot! 🙂

  29. Liebe Dina, da wäre ich ja nicht im Traum drauf gekommen, dass es an deinen Bildern noch etwas zu verbessern gäbe!
    Dass es wie überall sicherlich viel zu lernen gibt, kann ich mir vorstellen!
    Das wissen doch alle: Es ist noch kein Meister vom Himmel gefallen!
    Allerdings habe ich seit kurzem den Spleen, dass du, um richtig bekannt zu werden, eigentlich Youtuberin werden solltest:
    Dina, wie sie aus fahrenden Autos für ein Foto springt, Dina inmitten unzähliger Schafe, lauernd auf das eine großartige Bild, Dina und ihr Esel, der die Ausrüstung trägt…usw. Da kann man ganz berühmt und sogar reich werden!
    Videos von den Fotosafaris für Youtube, überlege mal!

    Ich überlege auch: Hallo ihr Lieben, ich freu mich echt irrsinnig, dass ihr alle bei uns heute wieder live dabei seid und mal sehen wollt, wie Ballett so geht, echt wahnsinnig super klasse toll, Ihr Lieben…
    Man könnte sich ja auch abheben und das ganz ernsthaft informativ betreiben, wirklich ich überlege es mal und wenn es klappt, schreibe ich dir auf jeden Fall nochmal!

  30. Dinaś Bilder sind immer noch kleine Wunderwerke…und man merkt die richtige Wahl des hochklassigen Systems – bitte nicht gleich alles nachmachen, was extrem hochklassig ist. Solche Dinge gehören dann auch in Museen… Ein kleiner Mix mit anderen Techniken dürfte mehr sein, als extremer Umbruch. Sonst würde ich eher zu gutem Psychologen raten… 😉
    …und ehrlich gesagt, liebe Dina bleib so wie Du bist, es ist immer noch überragend…setze die Besten davon in 500px – und lass die Welt bewerten. Schätze sie landen alle in den oberen 90-Prozentern in Toronto…ich freue mich immer, wenn ich die unteren 90er ein wenig ankratzen kann…

      Jetzt eine Frage, ich habe mich neulich bei 500px angemeldet um Fotos anschauen zu können, selbst habe ich keine Fotos reingestellt und weiß auch nicht wie die Regeln dort sind; ist das wie eine Fotocommunity, die jedes Bild bewertet? Kostet das etwas? Bist du dabei und wie findest du es, bringt es etwas?

    • My dear book fairies Siri and Selma, I love english language and the more I love it to practice it, to speak it, to think in it, to dream in it. But to reach this, I have to train myself in writing comments and poems and I wished, you could throw an twinkling eye to my searching methods (Cassel’s Dictionary) to find the right words to say it clearly.
      I am very happy to brighten up Dinas Day, it was important for me to tell her, that I love all of her photos. The are great. And here I saw the effect of a wide open land and was enchanted by this charme. I think, it is a very good idea of you both to integrate also Dina’s older pics in you coming posts. I’d like to watch them all…:)
      About Brexit I could say with all of my heart, that I pray for a good solution to find. I must say, that I would prefer to do the time-warp again (free inspired from Rocky Horror Picture Show) and all would come to take a choice for communication and not for money…

    • Dear Karfunkelfee,
      isn’t it funny, we quite often look for those expressions which are alike in both languages. So we say, “I am afraid my English is bit rusty” – with all the same connotation as in German.
      Although I live in Norfolk I speak and write as much German as I do in English. Therefore my English is far from being good, although I live in English speaking surroundings for more than 35 years now. But I never ever was out of contact with the German language (German was my job, so to speak). And our dear Bookfayries, Dina and I we speak German together as my Norwegian is much too rusty and my fairy tongue even more so. We all four speak and write German best.
      Now I have to go on painting a door at our Annexe we rent out for holidaymakers. Have a happy day

Liebe Hanne, wie gut ich dich verstehen kann, es geht ja mit jedem Lernschritt weiter, mir geht es mit meinen Montagen so, da hat kaum noch eins Gewicht, was älter als 4 Jahre ist, ich sehe all die Stümpereien, aber auch bei den Fotos. Trotzdem gibt es aber auch die, die sich über die Jahre hinweg halten und ich glaube auf die kommt es an. Was meinst du?
    Viel Freude beim ausprobieren und weiterlernen.
    Ihr Lieben alle, klar, habe ich etwas erwartet, will ganz ehrlich sein, wenigstens wie es euch mit alldem geht, aber enttäuscht bin ich nicht, denn ihr habt ja Recht: das letzte Wort ist noch nicht gesprochen! Und das ist gut so…

    • So schön von dir zu lesen, liebe Ulli, vielen Dank für deine Gedanken and Anregungen. Ich bin ganz deiner Meinung! Ich lehne nicht alle alte Bilder ab, keineswegs. Aber die alten Fotos ,die ich vor 3-4 Jahren nicht gezeigt habe, möchte ich heute nicht verschlimmbessern damit die demnächst in einem Post kommen. Wenn ich sie dafür als zu schlecht einstufe, bleiben sie unter Verschluss. 😉

      hmmm, die Engländer, die spinnen! Sie sind für einige Zeit völlig dem Populismus á la Johnson und Farage verfallen – aber nun kommt das Erwachen. Vielen wird erst jetzt klar, wofür sie sich entschieden haben und da kommt die Panik. Keine Ahnung, wie es weitergeht, das scheint keiner zu wissen, aber ehrlich gesagt, machen wir uns keine Sorgen. Zur Zeit ändert sich für uns gar nichts, außer dass alles billiger für uns wird – was wir auch gut gebrauchen können.

      das liegt daran, dass nach dem Brexit das englische Pfund gegenüber dem Euro mächtig gefallen ist. Da wir vom Euro leben, profitieren wir. Allerdings nur auf dieser Ebene, denn mein Haus ist dadurch um den gleichen Prozentsatz im Wert gesunken.
      Wie dem auch sei, wir genießen das Leben and we don’t worry but being happy 😀😄😊😊✨💥💫

  37. Hallo Dina,
    nun mach’ mal Deine früheren Fotos nicht schlecht! Sie sind nämlich ganz exzellent. Ich wäre froh, ich könnte so fotografieren. Ich finde es aber trotzdem prima, dass Du Dich fotografisch noch fortbildest. Man lernt bekanntlicherweise ja nie aus. Ich freue mich dann schon auf die Resultate.
    Zum Fotografieren hier: ich muss mir wohl eine neue DSLR zulegen, denn meine D70s hat vor ein paar Tagen den Geist aufgegeben. Ich hatte schon seit Längerem Probleme damit, dass sie die Speicherkarte nicht immer erkannte. Bisher gab’s aber immer die Möglichkeit, die Karte herauszunehmen und wieder einzusetzen. Hat immer geholfen. Aber seit ein paar Tagen nicht mehr. Auch eine andere Karte bringt so gut wie keine Abhilfe. Die wird nur erkannt, wenn ich sie fest in den Slot presse und festhalte. Aber so kann ich ja wohl kaum fotografieren. Ich denke mal, das liegt irgendwie an den Kontakten in der Kamera, und ich glaube nicht, dass es sich lohnen wird, das reparieren zu lassen. Also bin ich auf der Suche nach einer neuen. Im Augenblick schwanke ich, ob ich mir die D5500 zulegen soll oder warten, bis die D7300 herauskommt. Die D5500 hat den Vorteil, dass sie einen schwenkbaren (Touchscreen)monitor hat, aber den Nachteil, dass bei vollkommen manueller Einstellung ein und dasselbe Rädchen fuer Blende und Belichtungszeit zuständig ist. Das wäre bei der D7300 nicht der Fall. Da gibt’s zwei. Und, wenn man den Vorankündigungen trauen kann, soll sie auch einen schwenkbaren Monitor bekommen. Noch habe ich aber nicht sicher herausbekommen künnen, ob sie überhaupt kommt. Und sie wäre natürlich auch eine ganze Ecke teurer. So wird es möglicherweise auf die D5500 herauslaufen, und ich setze das gesparte Geld lieber für ein neues Allround-Zoom [18 – 300 mm VRII] ein. Schau’n mer mal.
    Hab’s fein, und erfreue uns weiterhin mit Deinen tollen Aufnahmen.

      also, ich kann deine Überlegungen sehr gut verstehen. So ging’s mir ebenfalls. Was brauche ich, was will ich und wofür. Die guten Objektive sind halt sehr teuer. Mein D5000 hat auch diesen schwenkbaren Monitor, ich muss gestehen, ich habe den wenig benutzt und vermisse ihn nicht. Entscheidend ist, dass du mit dem was du kaufst zufrieden bist, dass das Ergebnis für dich “gut genug” ist.
      Auch bei Speicherkarten kommt es auf die gute Qualität an.Welce benutzt du? Du lieber Himmel, vor 10 Jahren machte ich eine ausgiebige Amerika-Reise, war u.a. mit einem Schiff 2 Wochen in die Karibik unterwegs und ich wusste nicht so recht ob ich genügend Speicherplatz haben würde. Ein Kollege hatte mir ein paar Speicherkarten ausgeliehen, die allerdings allesamt Schrott waren, wahrscheinlich von einem Discounter, und ich habe dadurch mehrere hunderte Fotos verloren, echt ärgerlich. Auf jeden Fall lohnt es sich die Kamera in einem Fotoladen zu zeigen und eine neue, hochqualitative Speicherkarte auszuprobieren.
      Viel Glück mit dem Kauf, haltet uns bitte auf dem laufenden! 🙂

    • Hallo Dina,
      also an der Qualität der Speicherkarten liegt es, so glaube ich jedenfalls, nicht, denn die eine, die jetzt überhaupt nicht mehr erkannt wird, hatte ich seit Jahren im Einsatz [und im Rechner kann ich sie immer noch nutzen], und die Ersatzkarte ist zwar etwas älter, aber auch gute Qualität. Ich denke mal, es sind wirklich die Kontakte in der Kamera. Die Kamera nach Nikon zur Reparatur einzuschicken wird sich m.E. nicht lohnen. Sie ist ja auch nicht mehr die jüngste und hat durchaus nicht die Merkmale, die eine neue mit sich bringen würde. Was den schwenkbaren Monitor angeht: klar, den benutzt man wohl nicht so häufig, aber er wäre mir wichtiger als das zweite Einstellrad, weil ich das nur sehr selten wirklich benötige und der Schwenkmonitor eine Touchscreen ist, die in Testberichten hoch gelobt wird. Also wohl doch die D5500. Die ist im Augenblick auch bei Nikon im Angebot, mit $150 Rabatt. Mit dem Gedanken an eine neue Kamera habe ich mich ja sowieso schon seit Längerem getragen.

  42. I do love your new photo, and your old ones always had beautiful subject matter. It’s a wonderful thing to think you may be getting to a whole new level. That is exciting. I agree, that once you get to a new level, you always want to put your best work out there. And the previous work gives an introspective more depth, a development that others can learn from.

    ..oje..wahrscheinlich wollt ihr den Job auch nicht machen….aber es wäre Zeit für eine intelligente Lösung in allen Bereichen…
    So, gehe schwitzen, mal sehen, was mir heute für Probleme zur Lösung angeboten werden, das Ballett an sich ist nämlich schon erfunden….

      wir wollen den Job der Retter Britanniens auf keinen Fall machen! Wir glauben damit ist dann sicher alle Freude dahin. Obwohl – ein großes Geheimnis – unser Masterchen wollte nach seinem ersten Studium eigentlich Diplomat werden, wurde dann aber vom kanadischen Staat glücklicherweise geheadhunted.
      Wir haben es hier fein, freuen uns und wünschen dir das Gleiche.

If you have experienced growth and development, nothing is better than that, and nothings shows it better than comparing with previous records. We shouldn’t be ashamed of our heritage either, no? Just the same. Besides, I believe it must have been a great weekend with Adrian.

  47. I have followed this long and interesting discussion – and I can fully understand your point, Dina! And the one of your family as well…In this, my family is rather the same constellation. Furthermore, lessons from Adrian himself, that would be the utmost joy. I admire his work immensely, and you had a whole week learning from him! That must be a complete dream – no matter how good you are as a photographer, you will always learn from other photographers. And he is the best. How fortunate and lucky you are!
