Dear autumn we love you!
Liebeserklärung an den Herbst
“Why do so many people love the summer but despise autumn and winter?” Siri asked, shaking her little head after she had read too many texts about autumn. Sorry, we don’t know this neither. We are fans of the autumn like many poets. In most novels, novellas, and poems autumn is praised as a reflective and productive time. Of course, because it is the season when nature rewards people’s efforts. Autumn is harvest and vintage time. But this “helpless poet“, as Lou Adreas-Salomé called Rainer Maria Rilke in her talks with Freud, has damaged autumn’s image by calling this season dull and miserable.
We do love the autumn but not only as the harvest time more so as a time of the magic haze, when nature hides gracefully behind a veil. Theodor Storm wrote:
The rising fog, the falling leaves,
to wine we are beholden!
The greyish day no longer grieves,
it’s golden, yes, it’s golden!
Maybe it’s those greyish days many are afraid of, when the light is vanishing like smoke in the wind. However for us it’s a cosy time of reading and writing, of escaping into a world of fiction in front of the open fire. That’s the world our beloved Bookfayries come from, a world of endless possibilities. And as we just wrote about light, we love this brownish and golden quality of autumn light, when light looses its aggressive force and becomes mild and soothing.
Der Nebel steigt, es fällt das Laub;
Autumn is a great painter, the dyer of all leaves. It also gives us and the birds all those tasty berries, which provide a massive dose of vitamins to overcome the winter healthy and happy. Our dear Master reminds this on his boyhood in Småland when his mother warned him not to sit down in the endless forests because the ground was covered with blueberries. Unfortunately we don’t find those here, but we go with our little buckets on the heath collecting blackberries and raspberries once a week.
When the wind is cheekily stripping trees and flowers, when it softly covers Mother Earth, then we are sitting in our warm snuggery telling ancient stories from those periods when autumn was seen as the time of demons and ghosts. The Inuit of Baffin Island, our Master told us, try to drive out those evil spirits every autumn. The Swiss folklorist Bächtold Stäubli traces back all European rites of autumn to this expulsion of demons as in Halloween. Following popular believes autumn is ideal to meet fen fires and the ghosts of ruins and gallows, which tantalises our dear Bookfayries but at the same time they are quite afraid of such a meeting. Autumn is a time for getting psychic, “then we see through the wafting mist into the world of fine spun chimaerae” as Selma told us.
“Oktoberfest” the biggest folkfestival and bender in the world takes place in autumn as well as the Frankfurt Bookfair as the world biggest vanity fair. It coincides rather by chance with north Germanic autumn festivals when parts of the harvest are sacrificed and also the deceased are remembered. As we live in an age of acceleration the “Oktoberfest” already starts in September nowadays. But for us it’s much more exciting that we start thinking about Christmas presents in autumn – dear Dina and our Master what they could give us and we, Siri and Selma, what we will get.
Und wisst Ihr was?
We wish you a golden happy autumn
Euch allen wünschen wir einen goldenen Herbst

It is a season of balance, as all seasons are. Beauty in another form, understanding in another way.
Savoring summers juices in glorious fanfare, before closing to build within once more, to winter ripen and prepare for that warmth again.
Each its own bloom, no two the same. But all encouraging an appreciation for change, as it is meant to do.
Beautiful photo’s…they also encourage that appreciation, thank you for sharing your seasons journey 🙂

I know you enjoy the literature by Karl Ove Knausgaard. He has published a
a new series: his “four seasons” quartet, On Autumn, On Winter, On Spring, and (as you might have guessed) On Summer. Presented as a “lexicon for an unborn child” and dedicated to the youngest of his four children, the quartet comprises several hundred short texts about objects (boots, chewing gum, plastic bags) and concepts (love, sex, war).

Each season holds its own particular kind of charm and beauty. Autumn is no exception. As the world grows more materialistic, people see less and less of the natural beauty in things. They see only sun or rain; hot or cold. It seems only the more complex beings appreciate the beauty in simple things, while the laymen appreciate only the more complex things. The world works in mysterious ways…

of course, every season holds it’s own charme but nevertheless it’s natural that people have preferences. We suppose that has to do with their psychological structure.

Yes, I agree that preference is a strong factor, but it could be argued that the preferences of many are swung by popular culture, advertising and the media. It’s a subject that could be discussed at great length and perhaps no conclusive end reached. One of those agree to disagree situations.
Thank you for you well wishing. Here’s hoping that something comes of all the work!

As a professional author I worked as consultant and editor for international publisher as well. My experience is that in the end every good manuscript finds its publisher. The challenge is not so much finding a publisher nowadays, it is rather selling enough copies that the big publishers and media stay interested. At least in my case this was quite some work with talk shows in TV, lectures, book signing, interviews, radio programmes etc. You have to think about if you really are the person who likes this. I did it for about 30 years, full programme, never at home, but now I enjoy my house and family, the sea and my garden.
Good luck again

I have absolutely no doubt that it’s hard work, but I don’t mind putting in the graft for something I love. What kind of stuff did you write? I’m always interested in seeing what’s out there so I’d like to give it a go. Your pearls of wisdom are appreciated also. So few established writers are prepared to give them in my experience

Dear Paul,
I wrote many non-fiction books mostly about symbolism in dreams, advertisment, film, literature and non-verbal communication. But I wrote novels as well and I produced scripts for films. I made the money with non-fiction books on the international markets and with TV programmes and lectures.
Well, I was a scientist at an ivy league university in literature and published articles (paid peanuts) regularly and was discovered by an editor of one of the big international printing houses. She was my teacher in the beginning. Later I had two agents, people for researching, for organising lecture tours and for contracts with media.
I suppose that is the normal way it goes if you decide to become a professional author. Of course, you need a subject you are known for. If somebody reads Paul E. Bailey he/she must immediately associates you with your subject. You have to become a kind of trademark – to make you one is the job of your agent.
I takes some years to sell more than half a million copies of every new book of yours and then you are taken seriously as a writer.
Ok – well, funny from harvest we came to publishing, strange associations …
All the best

yes, this autumn is rather a late summer, but we had some gales yesterday for half a day. So autumn said clearly here I am, altough we have nice sunshine now and it’s calm and warm. But the cosy time of the life inside will come for sure soon and we are looking forward to it.

Hello Klausbernd. I do love autumn. I will be going to Serbia in late October for a few weeks to update my book for a new edition but it would be great to visit you ‘at the edge’ sometime before that if possible. Are you still resistant to birdwatching, Klausbernd? Autumn is probably the very best time at Cley. Regards Laurence

Dear Laurence,
that’s possible. Dina and I will be in Cley. We will only go for a lecture I have to present to Germany for a couple of days at the very end of autumn.
I am not resisting birdwatching, not at all, but I don’t really know that many birds and I am happy watching our pheasants and jackdaws in the garden 😉
Haven’t we a great autumn until now? Just mail a date that’s convenient for you for a visit at the edge
Regards Klausbernd 🙂

I love the beauty of serenity of Autumn. It feels like nature is relaxing, preparing for the long sleep of winter.
It particularly awes me when I consider the colors. It’s like nature is painting us a picture–beautiful but temporary. And because the colors of no two years are exactly the same, each years painting is unique. We only get to see it for a little while, and only for one season of our life. And of course nature puts a limit on how many of her paintings we get to see.
So I suppose the upshot of all that is that we should do our best to enjoy the autumns we’re given. Happy Fall!

Indeed, nature presents us fleeting art and teaches us in this way to be here and now, to be aware of the moment and of what we are seeing. It fascinates us as well that nature constantly presents a new picture, even from one moment to the next you see another picture. The number of different pictures is endless and giving so a hint of eternity.
A happy autumn for you as well

Wonderful, wonderful photos and essay.
My whole family loves autumn, and we don’t so much expel the ghosts & spirits, as welcome them in for remembrance and warm cider (maybe spiked with a different sort of spirits). I’m not home, and am really missing the apple harvest, fruit pies, Thanksgiving, seeing the foliage change day-by-day, and walking through all the drifts of leaves.
Thank you for such a lovely post.

Good afternoon, dear Robert,
what a lovely custom to welcome the spirits for warm cider and apple pies.
We have lots and lots of apples here as well – and spirits too (both kinds of 😉 ). Unfortunately we don’t have a cider press but so we eat lots of yummy apple crumble. We have damsons too, that’s an old kind of plum tasting very well with Vodka and lemon icecream. Yes, harvest time is abundance of all the goodies …
We are very happy that you like our post and thanks a lot for your kind words.
We wish you a GREAT autumn although you are not at home, but every part of the world has its own kind of lovable autumn rites

By the way, we miss here all the coloured leaves as well because here at the coast are hardly any forests. The pictures are taken in the very south of Germany when we had a holiday in the Bavarian Alps two or three years ago.

While I don’t despise autumn, on the contrary I rather like it, it justs makes me sad sometimes because I know this season means nature is shutting it down getting ready for her long nap (I do dislike winter!!!!) I guess you could say I prefer autumn at it’s peak before it begins its slide into that other season.

People prefer different seasons. Siri and Selma are thinking hard about what makes one like a special season and not another. We f.e. like autumn and winter, especially real winter with lots of snow and ice. Therefore we have to go to Greenland sometimes. But living here in North Norfolk we love the autumn. This is the time for us we are changing from living most of our time outside in the garden to siting in front of the open fire reading, having a drink, and telling each other stories.
Anyway we hope that this autumn will be kind to you even on its winter end.

Autumn means the return to peace and quiet at the beach. This was a lovely post and the colors spectacular. I do miss the change of color. Our plants stay the same green all year so we have to wait for the spring for color. Happy Autumn Fab Four of Cley!

Good afternoon, dear John,
for us autumn means peace and quiet in every respect, it means cosyness, reading, and telling each other stories.
We miss here the change of colour too, because there are hardly any woods at this coast. It’s not the climate only, especially the wind, but it were Romans cutting trees for ships and forts and the English cutting the trees for their mines.
The pictures are taken in the very south of Germany, in the Bavarian Alps where we had a holiday some years ago.
Nevertheless we wish you a great autumn

Your photos are such a wonderful welcome to autumn, a season I love, though not quite as much as spring. When the trees start to change colour and the light softens it is grand, I’m not so fond of the damp and grey days when the leaves just drop from the trees and turn to a sodden mush, but I use them to plan trips or redesign the garden or read or blog 🙂 And now we have a wood burner so we can sit around it and enjoy the lovely smell of wood.
I saw a painting recently of a pair of angels with red wings which made me think of Siri and Selma, I think they would look lovely with red wings – just a thought for a Christmas present 😀

Good morning, dear Jude,
we have a wood burner in our “drawinig room” we don’t want to miss any more. It’s so cosy sitting around a roaring fire reading, talking, cuddling. And the smell of the wood … The warmth has a much nicer quality than the one produced by our central heating.
Actually we would need some rain for our garden, so we don’t mind a couple of days with wet weather. But we are sure that will come early enough.
Siri and Selma would love such angels with red wings 🙂 🙂 They collect pairs of angels, well, they call them “fairies”, but it’s all the same anyhow.

Dear eternal traveller, good morning,
great that you like Dina’s pictures. She took those pictures when we were holidaying in the Bavarian Alps.
As we live at the North Norfolk coast we haven’t so many trees here and therefore we miss the autumn colours of the changing leaves. We live in a bird watching area, autumn means a change of birds. We always love it when these huge flocks of wild geese flying over our house. They start doing it in autumn reminding us on “Nils Holgerson” we read, when were young and now Siri and Selma are reading Selma Lagerlöf’s novel – by way Selma is called Selma after Selma Lagerlöf! She is very proud of it.

Such a delightful post celebrating my favourite time of year. I was born in Autumn, perhaps this makes the season more special for me but rather than a time signified by summer ending for me it’s always been a time of new beginnings, a new school year or university semester. An exciting time to get projects underway to take you through the winter months, a night class perhaps, learning new skills. It’s a wonderful time of year.
Your pictures Hanne are stunning!

Good afternoon, dear Chillbrook,
what a great weather: sunshine, calm, and a confortable temperature. It’s still a time for doing things outside. But we are sure soon the time of strong winds and rain will come. Actually we are looking forward to it. As for you autumn is the time for us to dive deep into new projects, what means reading and writing for Siri and me. We are thinking about new topics then and play around with new styles. At the same time Dina and Selma will analyse their pictures, work on them and getting their pics in an order to find them easily again. This all takes place in front of our open fire, very cosy. Yes, this is autumn for us: time of cosyness.
But the real autumn hasn’t began here yet, we had sunshine every day since you left and actually we would need some rain for the garden. But it’s gets a little bit cooler every day, just a little bit. Dina has still quite hot summer temperatures in Bonn (28 C) but here we have around 20 C, a temperature we like.
We wish you and Chris a very happy autumn, have fun and enjoy life

Hallo Ihr Lieben,

Ganz liebe Grüße nach Texas!
Dina x

Guten Abend, lieber Pit,

Guten Morgen, liebe Ulli,

Good morning from Vancouver. The autumn sunshine has come and I am the happiest of souls. Autumn is my most favorite season for many reasons, the primary one being my adventures start here. It is my beginning. It is harvest time – the work of summer has been rewarded. Now it is time for exploration, to sit by the fireplace, to read, to plan, to dream… Thank you, my dear Fab Four of Clay for sharing the richness of this moment. As L.M. Montgomery one wrote in Anne of Green Gables: “I’m so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers.” Many hugs and love coming your way…

Dear Rebecca, I’m sure Vancouver looks splendid now. I enjoyed watching the video from Manitoba, your hometown, thanks for sharing it with us!
If the seasons in Manitoba were anything near what I had, growing up in Norway, the winter was very long, starting in October and leaving in April.
Arriving in Germany, it was a pleasant surprise to greet spring in March, sometimes in February, but most of all, the mild autumn appeared with a distinct prolongation.
Cheers to you in Vancouver, hello Manitoba:

Thank you for your thoughtful addition of my home town video. Lynn Lake was a wonderful place to grow up. When I lived there, it was isolated, without a road. The only way was by plane or train. We usually took the train. It was a 200 mile journey that took 11 hours. CNR put on two travel coaches at the end of a long long long line of ore cars. Our only source of news came from Radio Canada. I left for university when Lynn Lake was experiencing its “golden age.” Now, it is a town that is redefining itself after the mines closed a few years after my family moved south. My school friends are scattered across the globe but we still keep in touch and share the memories of a place where the summer days were long and the winter sunsets came in mid afternoon. Time passes, but friendships remain. When I look back, I am reminded that we must fully embrace the moments for they sustain us as we move ever forward onward in our personal timelines. Many hugs and lots of love to the Fab Four of Clay.

Dear Clanmother
welcome to the club! Yes, autumn is cosyness for us as well. We like the change of the colours of the leaves, the change of light and everything gets more minimalistic in a way, a reduction. Life slows down and gets more reflective. Spring and summer are the extraverted times, but after all this extraversion we need an introverted periode as well.

Dear Clanmother,
oh dear, I forgot to mention my Canadian autumn experience.
I arrived in Canada in the north of Quebec at a beaurtiful indian summer. It was so great I couldn’t believe it, all the maple leaves changing their colour, unbelievable. It was a kind of unreal, like being in a picture postcard with this “wish you were here” written on its backside.

Quebec is stellar – there is so much colour in eastern Canada. The prairies are golden in the fall, and after our leaves fade away, Vancouver keeps its green throughout winter. I am glad that we live in a world where there are seasons. Thank you for another marvelous post – always, always a joy to stop by. And as you know, I come back a couple of times to read the lively and insightful discussions.

Dear Clanmother,
Siri and Selma just looked up Lynn Lake first in my Geography books and then in the net. It’s famous for fishing now and we were amazed that it is just a little bit smaller than Cley is. We suppose it’s very special to grow up in such an isolated and small place. Doesn’t this make you stick together, well, it’s like living in a big family. We Fab Four grew up in cities, very different. And travelling was that easy for us – our dear Master did a lot of hitchhiking all over Europe and Dina as well. It was a bit harder for her because she always needed a ferry.
We send you big hugs and love and fairie dust xxxx to our Canadian friend

Good morning, dear Cindy,
I just wrote to Clanmother that I arrived in Canada in the autumn and I wished it would stay autumn for ever. Autumn was so GREAT there.
If we go travelling we usually go up north, because we are not these summer-fans. And so we kind of prolonging our autumns and winters. But actually we like clear seasons and now the autumn started here after a glorious summer (actually a bit too long).
We wish you Happy Autumn as well!

AGREE ~ there is not a better season for me than autumn. It is the time to exhale and see the beauty of nature putting on a show for us one last time before the cold and icy beauty of winter comes in and at least for me, I hibernate a bit 🙂 The words of the Book Fayries are perfect “…we love this brownish and golden quality of autumn light, when light looses its aggressive force and becomes mild and soothing” and I think it is this warm light of autumn that brings us some creative thoughts of what the year has brought to us and incentive to make something special before the year ends. Your first two photographs are so spectacular in color ~ but also, in contrast ~ this too shows how wonderful autumn can be. Your photos are amazing ~ and especially the last one that brought a smile that will last throughout the season 🙂 Cheers to you all on a great season ahead.

Good morning, dear Dalo,
and what a great autumn-morning that is: sunshine, clear air, but a bit chilly. And yes, we love this autumn light! 🙂
We had a glorious summer this year and the autumn is beginning with all its glory as well. We like it when it’s not that hot any longer. If we want to sweat we visit our sauna 😉
These photographs are taken in the south of Germany, when we travelled around the Bavarian Alps. Autumn is more grand there than it is here at the coast, because of the huge forests with all these trees changing their colour. Autumn usually means quite strong winds and some rain as well here.
Dina is very happy that you like her pictures 🙂 and says “Thank you!”

Golden indeed, and the photography is stunning – definitely autumn at it’s best. Sadly we don’t get much autumn here in the southern US, but then again we don’t havt to deal with winter either so I suppose it’s a fair trade! Beautiful post!

Good morning, dear Tina,
as we wrote before we are autumn and winter fans. Autumn makes us looking forward to winter. We like it when it is getting colder, we like the rain and hope for lots of snow. Well, unfortunately we don’t get this here, therefore we go North in the winter to enjoy snow, ice, and the clear minimalistic landscape under a white cover.
We are very happy that we could give you a feeling with our pictures why we love autumn. Thanks for liking them!

John Keats described Autumn as: ‘season of mists and mellow fruitfulness’ in his poem ‘To Autumn’. It is the softness of the light that is such a feature of that time of year – not yet upon us – but it will come before long. That first image is a gem – the colours in the sky so cleverly balanced by the foreground. This is my first Autumn down in West Sussex so I will be hunting down new woods and forests to capture the colours.

Good luck for capturing great colours. Forests are ideal for autumn-pictures, aren’t they?
You made Dina very happy by liking her pictures she took three years ago in Bavaria. And thanks for quoting Keats 🙂 Well, autumn is the season for all the romantics.

I just read in the excellent book “The Worst Journey in the World” by Appaley Cherry-Garrard (about Scott’s expedition to the South Pole).

I did as well living in the Arctic.

Hallo Dina, hallo Klausbernd,
@Dina,
@Klausbernd,
Pit & Mary
P.S.: Hier sind gerade die Baumfäller zu Gange. Leider müssen mal wieder Eichen gefällt werden. Dieses Mal 6.

Guten Abend, lieber Pit,
Dann mach’s `mal gut. Take care
Lots of love

Unfortunately, no. Winter is my least favorite season. I am too much of a tropics girl to love it. The snow looks quite magical when it is fresh, but soon it deteriorates into a pile of cold mud hereabouts. I like the fact, though, that when there are a lot of snow, we get more water for our springs and such. 🙂

Hi, dear Imelda “tropic’s girl” 😉
we agree, winter is only great at places where it’s really cold like -10 degrees C and under and where one has lots of WHITE snow and blue ice. Therefore we love the Arctic and Northern Scandinavia. We don’t like it warm and damp, well, up to 25 dgrees C it’s okay, but more we Fab Four don’t like. But not that we don’t like the warmth in general because we love our sauna. Anyway, isn’t it good that different people like different climate zones? Otherwise certain places would be overcrowded.
We wish you a very happy weekend 🙂
