Discovery of Stillness
Stillness is the dance of emptiness
Siri Buchfee
Here it is silent as silent can be
(Scoresby Sound/E Greenland)
We Bookfayries are constantly seeking stillnes in our noisy times. You know, we are looking for real stillness, so quiet that we can hear the grass growing. A stillness as vast as the universe, like an endless open space which gives us the feeling to be sucked into a black nothingness. We love this prickling feeling, this enjoyment and excitement combined with fear! We can’t stop listening deep into the absolute stillness and let us fall deeper and deeper into the dark abyss of nothingness.
We are Bookfayries which makes us love libraries, not only because libraries are our home, but it’s that deadly silent there, so silent that we can hear the dusty breathing of the books.
The ice fairies are still sleeping. You might hear them snoring.
(Røde Fjord, Scoresby Sound/NE Greenland)
Even as a word “stillness” is unique, it doesn’t even exist in plural. We just noticed this sitting in our red observation tent on the beach the other day. From our log: “The sound of the sea sounds like silence.” Often we experience stillness in nature when we are travelling with Dina and our Master. But nature is never totally quiet. From our log: “Nature can’t shut up“. We like to travel up North in wintertime when it gets colder and quieter. “Stillness“, we learned at our Fairy School, “means cold, it’s motionless down to the molecular structures.” Still as still can be is connected with death. It’s a bit like sleeping.
The other day Dina told us: “daytime is noisy, silence blocks consuming.“
The ice fairies quietly getting up in the morning
(East coast of Greenland)
“Why is stillness that important?” we asked our Master, never shy of an answer. We were sitting in front of our red observation tent on the beach, hearing nothing but the sound of the sea and the terns. When we thought we’d have better shut up, our dear Master answered: “The inner stillness is important! You should try to stop your judging and needy inner monologue. By creating a quiet surrounding in your own inner home you produce an atmosphere of concentration and creativity. You know, stillness is power!” All stupid talk! We don’t want power, we want an ice cream!
Can you hear the ice fairies? They make this sparkling sound like champagne.
(Røde Fjord, Scoresby Sound/NE Greenland)
If we understand correctly, stillness is something that’s easy and hard to reach at the same time. It’s something that quite some people can’t stand. We have to admit we can only bear it in a small dose. Therefore some folks need a constant level of sound like the radio. Or they have anankastically to communicate all the time with their smartphone, which is not at all smart. Stillness is the escape from the turbulent world of constant events. Therefore we find stillness often boring. But did you notice, the smartphones made our everydaylife menacing silent – acoustically seen. Zeitgeist prefers writing, talking is out. That’s a pity, because Bookfayries are talkative. Nevertheless, we go with the time happily blogging. “We communicate, therefore we are“, that’s old Bookfayrie wisdom.
Man schreibt heutzutage, Sprechen ist out.
Far far away, way up North at the real end of Europe …

Pssst! Und Tschüss
Eure Buchfeen Siri und Selma
Post Scriptum:
We Bookfayries were quite surprised about the Literary Nobel Prize für Bob Dylan. If a songwriter, then we’d preferred Leonard Cohen. We kept our fingers and wings crossed for the Norwegian author Jon Fosse, the world’s most performed living playwright and for us the new Beckett. Fosse, who was favoured by many for this year’s Nobel Prize, fits exactly for this post. He stressed in many interviews, that stillness is central in his works as in his life .

Dear Trini,
we expected that you would like Jon Fosse as well. He is quite a spiritual person influenced by Master Eckhart, who is one of the medieval mystics we like best. He thought a lot about what it means living a spiritual lifestyle in everyday life – as Fosse did and does.
Thanks for liking our pictures 🙂

I just watched the Nobel Prize Ceremony from Kungliga Akademiet. 🙂 You are right about Jon Fosse, he’s one of the best! I’m very pleased that you are spreading his name. He is the teacher of Karl Ove Knausgaard, I read the other day.
There’s nothing I need more than silence to do a good perfomance, whether I prepare my lectures and papers or give a lecture. I could not exist in a big, loud office.
You photos from the Arctic are truly magnificent!

Good afternoon, our dear Swedish friend,
yes, we know that Fosse was the teacher of Karl Ove Knausgaard, but we think their style is quite different. We like both but see them as a kind of different sides of a coin.
We need absolute silence when working, otherwise we cannot really concentrate and only reproduce clichees or trash.
We love the High Arctic and wanted to show it in those pictures. Great that it worked!

I love it!

I'm so sorry for Jon Fosse not getting the Nobel Prize, but I have to admit, I was not aware of him being so high upon the list. And then I feel very sorry for all people having to work in those big, noisy offices. Like me! The inventor of the big office must be a noice resistent person … 😉

Dear Hjerter,
you see in England you can bet on everything and most of the betting folks did bet on Fosse for the Literary Nobel Prize.
You mention those noise big offices with or without cubicles. You wouldn’t believe but Frank Lloyd Wright was the first one building such an open plan office already in 1906, with his Larkin Administration Building inNew York. Nowadays we know working in those open plan offices hightened the stress, lowers the productivity, and produces frustration and illnesses. When walls come down in the so called Bürolandschaften the employees can be controlled much better and they are cheaper to build (a so called cost effective design) and to service. But they are unsuitable for work that needs concentration and for a positive working atmosphere.
With lots of love to Trondheim and we keep our fingers crossed that soon sound proof walls will come up in your office

Hei vennen min, hjertet ❤ mitt 🙂
I thought I'd share this with you
just as Alfred Nobel came to regret inventing dynamite, and Robert Oppenheimer lamented the atomic bomb, Bob Propst (who intrudced the cubicle office in the 60's) was demoralized by what his grand idea turned into. He didn’t blame himself, though: “The dark side of this is that not all organizations are intelligent and progressive. Lots are run by crass people who take the same kind of equipment and create hellholes. They make little bitty cubicles and stuff people in them. Barren, rat-hole places.” The research backed him up, too: The International Workplace Studies Program concluded that “cubicles can inhibit teamwork by separating workers via artificial walls.”
By the time Propst passed away in 2000, he’d obtained 120 patents, including ones for a vertical timber harvester, an electronic tagging system for livestock, a mobile office for quadriplegics, and a new workflow chart system for hospitals. But today, he’s mostly remembered as the “father of the cubicle”—even though his original design consisted of no cubes at all.
Weird, isn't it?

If to the human mind’s imaginings
Silence and solitude were vacancy?”

It seems many people don’t regard “noise pollution” as a serious issue, but in addition to blocking us from thought and reflection, it has been shown to have the power to actually shorten our lives, and disrupt nature, such as the navy’s sonar driving whales and other sea-creatures to destruction. I’ve been staying in an echoing, creaky building with a tin roof, that seems to be constantly fighting the wind and itself. In two days, I’ll be climbing up a mountain, and am looking forward to just hearing the wind for a day. Your beautiful icebergs and their sparkling champagne sounds, sound great to me. OK, thank you for allowing me to comment on your excellent post, and I’ll be quiet now! 🙂

Dear Robert,
noise pollution is a big problem (like light pollution). People living in a city get used to the noise – as they suppose, but it’s on the surface only. The problem with noise is that you cannot switch off hearing. You can switch off being aware of hearing the noise but you hear it still and it has its harming effects.
We wish you a happy climbing and a grant nature experience.
Take care

We need stillness like we need air for breathing as well. We usually work in absolute silence here, only hearing the songs of the birds or the wind. Bookfayries,
You described the silence of the eye perfectly. We were very lucky here in Palm Beach County, the little ‘wobble’ Matthew took just before reaching us pushed it just far enough away from us !! Unfortunately for the people in northern Florida, it headed straight for them.
Thank you so much for your concern.
All my best wishes,

Dear CP Cox,
we find this very interesting ‘the deepest silence in the eye of a hurricane’. Silence seems to need the noise and if the noise around is very noisy the silence becomes very deep. Maybe, but Dina and me haven’t experienced a hurricane neither. Did you experience this deep silence during the last hurricane Matthew?
We hope, you are fine, that don’t have any damage to house, garden etc.
With lots of love and best wishes to our dear friend

Klaubernd and Dina,
I just wrote to your lovely Bookfayries that Matthew took a ‘wobble’ in course and veered just enough away from us. We were lucky, but that put it on course for Northern Florida. The eye that I experienced was around the mid-60’s up on Long Island, NY. It’s an experience you don’t soon forget. Very unusual.

Guten Morgen, liebe Susanne,

Liebe Grüße an euch alle, Susanne

Guten Morgen, liebe Susanne,

Wonderful post. You have no idea how city dwellers miss being able to be still and centered. It’s not so much about silence, although that’s is a stepping stone to reach that kind of state. On the other hand, there must be those who already put up some work toward self-awareness and, to be still, have only to turn some internal switch. Bless their hearts. Not us, though. To have even a moment of absolute communion with the big inner multiverse inside, one has to work really hard (without working really hard, I know). Thanks for that. As for Dylan, it’s well deserved on his own; the Swedish commission needs him more than he needs them at this point. But there seems to be a problem of direction with the Nobels for quite a while now, so I’m not surprised, except for the prestige they still manage to attached to the awards. Anyway, everyone should get one, or no one should, it doesn’t really matter either way. Good for him, I guess. I’m just not looking forward to the onslaught of commentary this will provoke, mostly senseless. Again, why does it matter? I’ll never know. Wish to be quiet now. All the best.

Dear Colltales,
we live in the country and most of the time we don’t hear anything besides birdsongs and the wind. Of course in such a surrounding it’s easier finding your centre and becoming one with the multiverse within and outside. But you are right, the magic is finding the switch to switch off the inner and outer noise. We suppose when you are able to switch off the inner noise then it’s easier to sent the outer noise into the background. The problem with the outside noise: you cannot switch it off. If there is noise you can’t not hear it, you can only not concentrate on it. Sound is that important in our life that it can’t be blocked off.
Thanks for commenting!

Thank you so much, Klausbernd. There’s a verse of an old Brazilian song that I’ve always loved: I want the peaceful silence of children sleeping. It’s still a powerful image, because it’s not just about the silence, but it’s also about how beautiful it is when it comes from those that fulfill our lives with so much joy with their noise. It’s almost as if, at that moment, the singer owns both the silence she seeks and also the comfort of a joyful noise, still audible, but soothingly quiet. Even if I don’t experience such stillness this weekend, and I almost surely won’t, then some part of me is already there. Cheers

Lieber Pit,

All the best and warm greetings from the cold but sunny sea

Lieber Klausbernd,
Pit
P.S.: “hyggelig” gefällt mir gut. 🙂 Muss ich mal übernehmen.

Indeed, we are bombarded with noise and all these useless infos are noice as well. We live in a world that want to produce extravered people, whereas stillness produces introverted people. Those introverts don’t consume as much as the extraverts. We suppose that’s why.

I love your thoughts about stillness. I’ve gone on retreat and simply enjoyed the silence nature affords. You’re right, of course, that nature can’t shut up. But the sounds of wind in trees and birds in flight and water burbling in the spring contrast happily and deeply with the human world’s noise. Your photographs again are stunning. Impressive clarity that complements your verbal message. I think of Nietzsche and the abyss and wonder if you’ll sometime experience the abyss looking back at you. Wishing you well in this autumn season. Thank you!

Thanks for your commentary.
We suppose that Nietzsche looked quite often into this abysss where is nothing. When we meditate we always have to push ourselves to fall into this stillness, this nothingness. We have the feeling that our body is afraid of giving up it’s connection to the outside world, maybe it sees it as a little death.
Well, we stressed the positive side of stillness very much but, as Susanne and others commented, there is this side of fear being confronted with real stillness and one’s inner self.
We wish you a quiet weekend

Tolle Texte, Wundertraumbilder, Danke!

Guten Tag, liebe Pia,

Wonderful stillness in those photos KB. And I love stillness and silence: a place where you can hear the earth breathe.
I like going to the top of ‘our’ hill as up there it is a good place to sit and contemplate, though not always still nor silent as the wind rushes through the grasses and the butterflies dance and the birds call from their hiding places and sometimes a buzzard mews overhead. But those are noises that are meaningful, not just noise. I wish you all a lovely and calm weekend though I fear the rain is heading your way. But I know Selma and Siri have their red raincoats and welly boots so they can splash in the puddles and fly with the leaves…
As for Bob Dylan all I can say is at least he won it for his songwriting and NOT his singing!

Dear Jude,
we really like your differentiation between meaningfull noise and noisy noise. We think that’s very important because no noise is death. Being alive we always need a little bit of noise, but noise is not noise. The quality of noise matters! Nietzsche wrote life is tension, he could have writen life needs noise as well, but only this meaningful noise.
The rain hasn’t arrived here yet. But Siri and Selma don’t mind the rain because they like their red raincoats and especially splushing in the puddles with their wellies. Dina bought them fancy welly boots with gay flowers printed on them they really love. And as there is no wind Siri and Selma are allowed to run around freely – and off they are whereas Dina and me are enjoying the silence of our sauna.
You made the point: Great that Dylan got the Nobl Prize NOT for his so called singing.
Wishing our dear friend a quiet and happy weekend

I like the notion of stillness so quite you hear the breathing of books – wonderful. Your photos are very beautiful, and certainly convey the idea of stillness and a great quiet, though I’m sure there are noises there. I’ve experienced a special type of stillness in the desert in Utah. It’s almost indescribable, but the rocks seem to sing with absolute stillness, a quiet that becomes akin to sound in one’s mind. It’s a ringing of the atmosphere, which is charged with energy, while stillness prevails. Like I said, hard to describe! Have a great weekend….

Beautiful reflections on stillness and the accompanying photos are stunning. Yes, not only is the world physically noisy, the worst I feel can be the constant inner chatter…reading this it is already calmed a bit. Nothing like the ocean to overwhelm and bring a cascade of stillness – although at times not so much actual silence rather a deafening roar! Lovely thought provoking post.

Good morning, dear Annika,

Stopping the inner monologue, well, that’s quite a challenge. We learned from our Gurdjieff teacher that you cannot stop it but you can bring yourself into a state of mind in which it is vanishing into the background. Maybe it’s most important not giving it energy, even not with fighting it.
Well, this is our experience. But we believe that everyone has to find her or his own way for stopping the constant inner chatter.

Wonderful post, wonderful photos. I could almost feel myself trying to climb into an ‘envelope’ of stillness as I read. Then as I read I recalled strange moments of stillness in the forest. Rare they are but, when that stillness ended by the gentle arrival of the slightest breeze–that breeze came with the feeling of a personality–and I did not know where to look or what to do. It is the beauty of your post that recalls those feelings. Thank you.

Thank you very much for your commentary. We are happy that we triggered your remembering of stillness in forests. We experienced this stillness in the Black Forest and in the Bavarian forests as well. It seems to us that every landscape has its genuin kind of stillness. The stllness of the Arctic is of another personality as the stillness of the continental forests or the stillness of the desert f.e.

The Ice Fayries are exquisite. So looking forward to traveling in the Arctic next year, Iceland, Greenland and Norway. This quote resonates and is beautiful, “Stillness“, we learned at our Fairy School, “means cold, it’s motionless down to the molecular structures.” That stillness that comes with the cold. What a beautiful way to describe it. It almost seems to me likes it’s waiting.

Now, of course, we don’t like this decision even more seeing how Dylan reacts. His attitude pretending that he doesn’t care is the worst narcissistic try to use the Nobel Prize for sheer personal PR. Sorry to write this, but we see Dylan’s attitute as a childish behaviour of a ruined old man.

Thank you for your beautiful posts and photos. It seems we are not yet through commenting on Bob Dylan receiving the Nobel prize. I am not familiar with the writings of Jon Fosse, but will remedy that immediately. However, I couldn’t agree more that Leonard Cohen would have been a much better choice. Not only because I am a Canadian originally from Montreal, but also because of Leonard Cohen’s relevance in terms of his scope of work over his lifetime. I think it was a great misjudgment on the part of the voting members. Certainly Bob Dylan has a place in music history but that should be left to others to acknowledge. Lastly, Leonard Cohen is a class act, he at least would have been gracious about receiving the prize. He is, in my mind, a Canadian National Living Treasure.

we fully agree with you. And as we wrote answering an other commentary, Dylan’s reaction shows clearly his narcissistic attitude. “Dylan just has no class” was Siri’s commentary.
We think that Cohen’s poetry is much richer and more sophisticated than Dylan’s lyrics. Whereas we find Cohen’s novels not as nearly so good as his poetry.
By the way we met Leonard Cohen several times when we lived in Montreal a long time ago, but that’s not the reason for liking his texts.
All the best and thanks for commenting

Dear Klausbernd,
Yes, we have gone from silence to colour (I believe there is a relationship between the two, but that would be too long a comment). I have studied a great deal of both Itten’s and Kandinsky’s writings on colour and read a bit of Goethe. I would love to go to the Bauhaus museums and have also always wanted to visit Berlin. I see that you are planning a trip to Scotland and to the Orkney Islands and Skye. I have just returned from visiting both, what a wonderful trip it was. On the surface the reason for our trip to Scotland was to visit the whisky distilleries which I have been documenting in The Bar Car blog, however the truth is my friend and I are both interested in all aspects of the spirit world. Both Skye and Orkney were amazing in that regard. I had long felt compelled to travel to the Orkney islands to visit the neolithic sites and the standing stones and feel so fortunate to have finally had that experience. I will certainly go back to Scotland and the next time the Isle of Harris and Lewis will be on my radar. I would also like to visit the Shetland Islands for the Up Helly Ha. When I can find the time to write them my next few posts on The Bar Car will be about our time on the Orkneys and Skye, alas guiding people through the world of colour is keeping me very busy these days. By the way, I see that you yourself are no slouch when it comes to the world of colour! Warmest Regards, Kora

Dear Leya,
wow, you flew with the Queen to Greenland!
We got hooked on Greenland as well – empty and quiet.
We couldn’t believe it. Dylan?
Probably made by the committee to give itself a more kind of modern Image. Anyway …
Thanks a lot and all the best

Dear Klausbernd,
Our great Canadian poet and songwriter has passed away. It was only recently that we were talking about him. A sad day indeed.

Good morning, dear Kora,
thank you very much to let us know that Leonard Cohen passed away yesterday. We hadn’t heard this sad message before. And thanks as well for this link. We are very sad. A great poet and musician has died.

Just to let you know there was a long article with interviews with Cohen in the New Yorker http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2016/10/17/leonard-cohen-makes-it-darker that showed he was ready to die. It was published last month.

Dina,
I am sorry but I will not be including that letter link you sent on my site. I have done my best to avoid voicing an opinion in the circus we had called a campaign and publishing this letter is taking one side or the other. In every election, someone wins and someone loses. I could go on and on about Hillary making the mistake of saying how powerful her sexist husband would be in the White House, but the point is, for 8 years we had Obama in office that I considered unqualified, for the reason that was a first-term senator and needed more experience. BUT, once he went into office, he became my Commander-in-Chief and that was final. The teenagers you are seeing protesting will be hit with the realities of life soon enough.
And remember, if women are so taken back by Trump’s words about women (years ago), then who were the millions of women who bought the smash hit, “Fifty Shades of Gray?” I believe it is time for this country to come together and try to unite again. We’ve been divided for way too long about way too much.
I’m sorry I could not accommodate your request. Feel free to delete this note, it will not affect my opinion of you or the rest of my Fab Four of Cley.

Dear GP Cox,
thank you so much for your very kind and thoughtful comment. I understand perfectly well what you mean and respect this of course and there’s absolutely no offence taken. Not all.
On the contrary, I have to applogise for intruding like this. I’m sorry.

No need , Dina. We’ve been friends far too long. I felt bad rejecting you, but I really do wish to keep politics away from the post (unless it’s WWII politics that is, haha, but even then – yuk).
Have a wonderful day!!

Dear Ultimatunu,
wow, what a surprise getting a commentary from Ittoqqortoormiit 🙂 You may have read it on our blog, we visited Ittoqqortoormiit on our travels up and down the coast of East Greenland. And actually our dear Master is writing a novel in wich Ittoqqortoormiit plays a role as well.
Do you live there all the year round?
We were always wondering how life in winter is there.
We are just travelling in Norway but will back home in a couple of days. We live in East Anglia at North Norfolk coast.
Thanks a lot for your commentary and have a great day

I´ll take a closer look at your blog to learn more about your travels up and down the coast, that sounds amazing! Also, exciting to hear about the upcoming novel you mention! I have been living in Ittoqqortoormiit since 2006, and yes, I live here all year around. I`m sharing some of my experiences on my blog. It is a lifestyle very different from what I grew up with, in Germany. 😉 Best Wishes, Ruth

Hi, dear Ruth,
I can imagine what a huge change of lifestyle that is. Isn’t it hard getting accepted there? And I suppose you speak Danish as well as Inuktitut. I am utterly and thoroughly impressed!
It’s really great having met you, at least virtually. You do something I have sometimes dreamt of. But now it’s changing. We – Dina, me and Siri and Selma – might move from this little village next the big sea to a city again after 35 years. Culture instead of nature. Well, we will see.
We might come to Ittoqqortoormiit again, but first we go to the Shetlands and Orkneys this spring.
Wishing you a great time up North in Greenland
Klausbernd – and greetings from the rest of our gang

“Outside, the silence was so complete that it was almost like a sound in itself, a white, empty tone that went on and on.”

Hei Dina, –

Klausbernd 🙂
