Looking at Lakes
Seen sehen
Always when we look at lakes we look at ourselves. We are two tiny narcissists, who first of all see themselves in the magic mirror of the lovely lakes. We learned being graceful naughty narcissist from our dear Master – as our beloved Dina sees it. Who knows if that is good or bad? We ask ourselves, don’t we always see ourselves whatever we look at?
“Seen sehen”, oh dear, what a challenge to translate it. Okay, you got it, it means seeing lakes. “Lake” and “to see” sound alike in German, it’s a bit like “seeing seas” – but the sea is not a lake; hells bells, bucket of shells! But we Bookfayries just see with our eyes deep and blue like lakes – or the sea. Fortunately translating is our Master’s job, much too complicated for lovely little Bookfayries.
To look at lakes, like at these Norwegian lakes, is peaceful and radiates a quietness. This quietness is as deep as the lake; rarely a fish jumps or Ariel the spirit of the wind ripples mischievously the surface. Lakes are completely flat like a mirror. It’s their identity not showing any gradient. We are learning from them their balancing powers, and we are fascinated that the soft water in it’s movements wins over the hard rock. The hard has to give in. But these lakes rest motionless in themselves meditating what’s the picture and what’s reality. And quite often we Bookfayries don’t really know what’s above and what’s below.
Sie meditieren still darauf, was Bild ist und was Realität.
Lakes are the Fairie’s magical mirror. Especially Bookfayries experience the world of fairy tales looking at lakes – therefore we love looking at lakes.
All the best from our beloved Norwegian lakes

I reckon every post you create is rather difficult to translate. A poetic fairy language may not have a counterpart.
The second image is a fine place for Nøkken to appear. Nøkken plays an important part in all Scandinavian countries and mythologies, but of course in Germany as well. In Weimar we have a fountain Nix und Nixe, did you see it by any chance?

Good afternoon, our dear friend,
indeed, we saw the Nix und Nixe fountain when we celebrated our Master’s birthday in Weimar many years ago.
Especially Siri and Selma are very fond of the Nøkken. We don’t know but we think there isn’t an equivalent in England – or is it?

Guten Tag, liebe Martina,
Well, these are all question hard to answer, but a contemporary philosophy should provide answers – or shall we admit that no (easy) answers are possible?

There is something about the stillness of lakes that I have always found rather sinister. Excalibur lies under a lake, and the lady rose from within one.
Lakes keep hold of their secrets, but the sea gives them up with the tide.

Dear Pete,

Lakes and magic or at least mythology go close together. Well, we say “still waters run deep” and depth is associated with secrets, magic and the unknown. There is a realm we cannot see, it’s hidden, and what is hidden produces (besides curiosity) fear. Freud sees the basis of the angst in the unknown and unseen. Spirits are living in the calm lakes following German fairy tales (especially in those lakes of the Black Forest surrounded by woods).
Thanks for your kind comment!

Dear friends,
what a surprise to read here something about my favourite philosopher S. Kierkegaard. I see it as KB does that the main theme in his philosophy is the individual. On the other side stands the mass or common ideology. Isn’t this a very up-to-date problem in times of the populism? There is the question what do we see and why do we see this and that?
Anyway I find this a very basic questions for our time now.
I wish you all a very happy advent-time 🙂

My dear friend,
unfortunately I read Kierkegaard in German and therefore I am never quite sure if I get his quite often dialectical ideas – but I hope so. Haven’t we been in a seminar about Kierkegaard together?
It was Karl Ove Knausgard who turned my thinking to Kierkegaard again. Although he wrote in several articles about Breivik he doesn’t mention Kierkegaard who can make us reflect populism on a kind of higher level. When the masses in Germany shout “We are the people” I see this as a symptom of the ideology zhat all people are equal and the masses are always right. This is against individualism and against differentiation as well. I strongly hope that those people will never rule. But in a way they do as Brexit and Trump shows. Of course on one hand we can read Kierkegaard’s philosophy against populism, on the other hand I find his praise of feelings dangerous as well. Of course he didn’t live in a media determined society in which media influence us – if we are aware of it or not – down to our feelings, we therefore cannot see feelings as individual any longer.
Anyway Kierkegaard and Knausgard made me think about individualism and mass society formed by the media and as we see in the US by social media. Siri and Selma stand on the other side. They don’t use social media, neither watch TV nor read papers. They are naiv in a way but nevertheless not ignorant. From my point of view they can trust their feelings. Are they an incarnation of an ideal? Well, we trained them to be.
This were just some ideas about the topicality of Kierkegaard, whose work isn’t read much today anyway.
I wish you a great pre-winter-solstice-time.
With lots of love xxxx

There is no individualism without the masses.
I always saw you as a little elitist, now I see your thinking from another perspective.

Reflection as an image and a contemplative state … Siri and Selma like to write a post about this. We’ll see.

Hello, our dear friend
our beloved Master told us that basic symbols are alike in all cultures and for all times. Actually that’s not his idea but C.G. Jung’s and Campbell’s. We are not that sure if this is the case. On the other hand we find similar meanings of the same symbols in our western cultures. There are the lakes the home of the spirits, the good and evil ones. We see this as a personalisation of the powers of our subconsciousness. But lakes are also seen as eyes, we would say the eyes of Mother Earth. And we become aware of ourselves through the eyes of other people …
Thank you very, very much for your kind words. Well, we suppose having a great teacher, who is a specialist for symbolism.

Beautiful lakes. How lucky that Selma and Siri have access to such perfect natural mirrors. Isn’t it interesting that to get a beautiful image, the lakes have to be deep and dark within.

Dear Gallivanta,
a mirror is a symbol of life as light and darkness come together to produce reflections.
We were philosophing quite a bit in our sauna yesterday. We might write in one of our next blog-posts about mirror images.
Siri and Selma not only love nature they need it. Therefore they are constantly finding places of outstanding natural beauty. They are our guides to such places.
We wish you a cosy and happy pre-Christmas-time

so many comments, I don’t know what to write. Except that your post made me aware of how often we see ourself only, seeing biased by all our prejudices – even if we are not narcissistic. I suppose to be successful one has to be narcissistic to certain degree. Actually I don’t think that’s horrible or wrong. But it’s disastrous for yourself if you are not aware of it. To blog shows a certain degree of narcissism, but so what?
We will mail soon, we can tell you a lot of news. Meanwhile have a great time.

Many lakes make an ocean? Well, the lakes have sweet water whereas the oceans are salty and therefore you find different spirits in the lakes and the ocean. Mermaids f.e. dispise lakes and for Poseidon lakes are much too small. Grimmelshausen, the Brothers Grimm and Eduard Mörike write about those dancing fairies in a Black Forest lake (Mummelsee).

What is the difference between a sea and a lake? Looking at the names of many sea and many lakes does not readily demonstrate an identifiable difference. There are salt water lakes and fresh water seas and some lakes that are bigger than other seas.

Dear Percy,
on one hand you are right, the are salty lakes in the deserts f.e. and there exists seas like the Baltic Sea which are not that salty. But at least in European symbolism as in fairy tales, literature and mythology there is a clear difference made between lakes and the sea (maybe because we don’t have salty lakes in Europe to my knowledge).
But of course the idea of your quote is correct as well if one sees from the amount of water.
It’s a matter of the guiding cognitive interest (Habermas) how you see it, isn’t it?
Thank you for making me think about “sea” and “lake” again – do you know that “See” (lake) and “sea” sound alike in German?
All the best

Wonderful celebration of the mystique of the lakes, especially in Scandinavia. 😀 The reflections are unreal at times…mirroring the actual perfectly, not a single ripple or disturbance in the water. Once I spent ages trying to work out which was up and down on a photo I’d rotated around! Lakes and the forests around are imbued with a sense of magic, otherworldliness and whenever I’ve gone swimming in such lakes, the peace and calm is all-consuming. Beautiful photographs and writing. Warmest wishes 😃

Good afternoon, dear Annika,
indeed, lakes are magical and otherworldliness! In German fairy-tales and literature the lakes and ponds are seen as the home of spirits, ghosts and fairies. Maybe that has to do that they are seen as symbols of the unconscious and those spirits, ghosts and fairies are the personalisation of our unconscious feelings. And when we are calm and peaceful then the door opens to this unconscious world. The doors of perception are open wide then – actually like in Blake’s poem from which this phrase was taken by A. Huxley to describe the insight in one’s unciousness.
Thank you very much for your kind commentary.
Wishing you cosy and peaceful week.

Beautiful, serene photographs ~ I feel I could sit and stare into the water for days and feel rejuvenated doing so. What is more impressive, however, is a line that may be my favorite I’ve read this year: “We are two tiny narcissists, who first of all see themselves in the magic mirror of the lovely lakes.” Amen to this ~ add me to the list as well 🙂

Thanks 🙏 for your kind words.
Siri and Selma like watching themselves but we as well. We have to look at ourselves whenever we pass something like a mirror. We suppose most of us are like this. We even would call this healthy. Everybody needs a certain narcissism to achieve something in our society. Of course it’s a matter of the dose.
