Holiday at ours in Cley, Norfolk

I woke up this morning to a voice next to me saying, “I’m not blogging any longer!!
Eyes still closed, I thought, ok, that’s a possibility. And all the things that I could do – if I were not spending so much time on blogging – came to my mind. Not bad at all … So I said, “that’s fine with me, let’s quit blogging“.
After breakfast and some grounding work in the garden, Klausbernd, Siri and Selma and myself went for a walk and discussed the reasons for and against blogging. On one hand, we love blogging for many reasons, but on the other hand, blogging is so ungrounded. All the time and dedicated work invested doesn’t bring a penny. That’s the point.

That’s why I, Dina, have decided to present our holiday let on this blog. Doing so, the four of us feel grounded and happy about blogging. 🙂
Here comes my offer: Do you like my photos, especially from North Norfolk? I am offering not only a friendly accommodation, the self catered annexe to our house in Cley next the sea, but if you want, I would happily show you the best photo locations in our AONB.  Needless to say, with the help of Siri and Selma, who know the secret places of magic landscapes. Pets and children are very welcome and we even will give a discount to our fellow bloggers. The North Norfolk coast is ideal for country walking, for birdwatchers and photographers. Children can go crabbing, watch the seals and play pirates at the Wells Pirate Festival. And you can wine and dine with candle light at one of the most iconic places in East Anglia, Cley Windmill.

    • Dear Dina, Dear fab Four of Cley.
In this this time similar questions like yours move my mind. I decided to go into a springtime sleep. I awaked the winter tired bears and went to the hays and woods to say them, that I am tired, busy for the years ago, busy in blogging and I asked them to produce eatable little Things for my friends while I am asleep. I decided to close my hobby, my time-eating lovely for a while but I am still flying to read of the well-being of my blogfriends. Your posts, your pics are jewels…
And the idea to visit Cley, somedays is a little dream in fairy’s heart.
I hope to read you and also in future but I can understand your reasons.
Stay well, Dear fabs, I send warm and earthy greetings via skylinedatas from Germany to you✨

  4. J & D > We’re ‘Celtic Coastliners’, but opposite’s attract, and we love N Norfolk. If we’re ever returning there, we’ll think of your place. We started blogging for it’s own sake – a satisfying form of expression. That remains true. However it is the necessity to pay our way and get a return on our investment (capital, effort and know-how) have led us to add additional layers of purpose and medium, and that has in turn helped continually re-invigorate our blogging. We hope you find the same! Viel Glueck – MfG J&D

  5. To blog or not to blog, I can very well understand your dilemma. I found it extremely time consuming and after four years of more or less happy blogging, I finally gave up.
Now you have found a fine way of grounding yourselves and you can continue. I wish you full books!. 🙂 I hardly know Norfolk, but as a pensioner I’m not that keen on travelling any longer. The heavy traffic …

    • Good afternoon, dear John,
we suppose that every blogger is questioning him- or herself if they want to go on blogging – to blog or not to blog, that is the question 😉 At least for us blogging needs a grounding. So we decided to go on blogging but sometimes use it for advertising our activities and Master’s books. We hope that this will have an effect.
Norfolk is actually a quiet area, not so much traffic, but, of course, you have to get here.
It’s a pity that you will not visit us, nevertheless all the best and Happy Easter

indeed, this is a peaceful area. We would be very happy if you would come to stay 🙂 🙂
Norfolk is rural and full of romantic villages and places. Many years ago we travelled in Up-State NY and Vermont, there was quite a similar feeling.

  8. You seriously cannot stop blogging you four! No-one else has fayries and no-one else has photos like Dina or insights like the Master! The world is a better place for fayrie dust and magic. As for you advertising your home for holidays then why not? A great idea, and Cley is a wonderful place to stay in. If we ever return to North Norfolk we shall certainly see if you have space for us. And I can recommend the windmill to stay in too, if you are full.
    Have a great week ❤

  9. Sounds wonderful! What a lovely offer. It is a great idea to also earn some money and the blog is a perfect place to advertise it too. You can do it fantastically with your inspiring photographs and texts. I wish I could come! Maybe one day. 🙂 I love blogging, but as you say, it takes a lot of time and combining it with a full time job like I do is more than a handful to say the least and I can’t update even Close to as much as I would like to. Imagine being able to blog full time and make a living of it! That would be a dream come true. But how, when you lack a specific hobby, talent or gift?? 🙂 That is the question!

    Liked by 3 people

    • Dear Marie,
thanks for your commentary 🙂 🙂
It was our idea in the beginning as well to earn some money with our blog. But we soon found out that’s nearly impossible or it would mean blogging in a way we don’t like. Now we rather see blogging as a privilege of age, doing something just for the fun of it and in a way it’s our voluntary work for a certain community.
But not to loose any grounding we will sometimes advertise our little businesses like renting out our holiday let or Master’s books. We are quite happy now wit this solution.
      All the best

    • Guten Morgen, liebe Susanne,
Schon einmal herzlichen Dank.

    • Great idea to finally met, Pete. I’ll think of a few places near to us where it’s fine to take Ollie for a walk and where you can give your camera a good work out. Is Ollie alright on the shingle, does he like to swim or would woodland maybe be better?
Last Sunday we walked through the marshes from Cley to Blakeney (that’s a fine walk, by the way) and we met a couple with the cutest little Shar-Pei. 🙂 I actually thought she’d be 3-4 months, but it turned out she was 8 months. We told the couple about Ollie, that we have a friend in Beetley with a Shar-Pei … that we have never met! 😉
Love to you all from the four of us in Cley,

No, we will go on blogging – although our dear Master gets the idea of stoppingon and off. Actually this blog started from his website where he posted a letter to all his readers with articles of his interests and to advertise his his book, book sigbings and lectures. So he expected – at leat in the lomg run – that this blog would advertise his activities. But then our blog got more and more its own life. Now there are hardly any connections left between our Master’s books and lectures and this blog.
Anyway that explains why old expectations are still in our Master head. But nevertheless we will go on blogging! and we are happy to continue!

And yes, I agree, blogging and blog reading (of other blogs) takes up an enormous amount of time. I’ve cut down on blog reading a lot and don’t write comments so much nowadays, but I still like to read travel or photography blogs for their images. 30.

  31. There’s somthing about we purists. While others make comfortable lvings from their enterprises on the blog we tend to feel there might be something wrong with it. When we do, we feel the need to excuse ourselves, as though expecting any more reward for our efforts than ‘likes’ or supportive comments is morally corrupt. In this, perhaps we are leaning towards to judging others in a way that we don’t judge a postman for accepting a wage for delivering our letters, or the grocer for selling us our daily needs. Just because we enjoy it doesn’t make it wrong.

Having had many of my current affairs articles plundered by many other sites all over the world, without permission or reward, my postion on receiving financial reward for my efforts has changed somewhat. Though I’m only to pleased to find my work on blogs that also work for no reward, regarding sites that solicit contributions on the back of such articles – of which there are more than a few – I have a bit of an axe to grind.

When I suggested to one very popular site that had re-published several of my articles that I also needed money to eat, my email was ignored. From that I could judge that despite the high-minded tone of the editor, one of his main concerns was lining his own pockets by purloining the work of others.

That’s going the long way round to saying: of course you must make something from the work you all put in and not feel guilty about it. You have built up a very healthy following and I’m sure there are many that would love to visit Cley. After all, you are offering something, I’m more than sure, people want. The accommodation looks wonderful, and should I ever make money from blogging, who knows, perhaps, I’ll find myself down your way.

    • Dear Bryan,
thank you very, very much for your great commentary! 🙂
I know this problem not only from blogging but as a writer as well. Before I became internationally known I was interviewed constantly but without any fees. It’s the dark influence of the net that people expect everything for free and don’t respect any copyright. Further down a blogger called “nomadenseele” comments who reblogged all my posts about colour on her blog without even thinking of asking for a fee to pay. Anyway the morals in the scene are very low.
And thanks for giving us the confidence to advertise our other activities without feeling bad about it. Ironically this “nomadenseele” is the only one who complains about advertisments on our blog.

It’s a great idea to advertise your holiday let on this blog. What about creating a permanent link to the Annexeblog on this one? 🙂
Anyway, I’ll keep you in mind for my holiday planning next year.

I see nothing wrong with advertising your annex or Klausbernd’s books either – I occasionally make mention of one of my books on my own blog. Anyway, this has rekindled our desire to come and stay with you on the coast sometime. We have, in fact, just returned from a blissful three days on the northwest Norfolk coast based in Old Hunstanton. I’m afraid we didn’t venture any further east along the coast than Burnham Overy Staithe this time.

It’s easy to do, and free too. You don’t even have to add a comment if you don’t want to. Lets give the Fab Four the boost they deserve!

  40. Great idea, and I’m sure you will have a lot of takers – I would be one, if I were closer. For now, there are no plans for travel in England, but who knows what the future will bring? And please, keep blogging. I know you value the community you have developed here, and the give and take. Though it may not bring in any cash, it brings other rewards, and then there’s the giving – that’s important, too.

  42. Hi, you live in a lovely corner of the world. I’ve been in Norwich last month to visit someone. I do like Norfolk very much and used to have holidays there occasionally, visiting castles etc. Last time with my boys I stayed in a youth hostel up north. ( they won’t come with me though any more as adults now) I remember a great out door shop near Cromer, I think it was West Runton. Well it’s great you advertise the Annexe here. It might be nice to come up as a break even if it is only for a couple of nights. I shall keep it in mind. I can easily drive from London and it is not that far away from Norwich.

  43. Brilliant idea – ‘very popular blog becomes an ad’. I bet S & S came up with this idea. Love Cley, love N Norfolk (& an unusual connection, The Wreck, requisitioned from my family for Naval target practice – hence its condition!). So maybe we’ll take you up on this one day… RH (PS about to go to Norway for a quick visit: Oslo, then Bergenbahn (which I remember as a kid) across to Bergen)

you guessed it, it were Siri and Selma who got this idea to advertise our holiday let here. And now we are very happy with it 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂
Two years ago we went out to your wreck. That’s quite an adventure. Dina took many photographs and we had to drag her away because we had there a quarter of an hour only to come back safely. Well, no problem for Siri and Selma as they can fly but for us crossing the channel with fast running water.
It would be great to welcome you at our home! 🙂 🙂 And we are the ideal place for birdwatching.

I also have friends who lived in different parts of Norfolk so I have been all over the county, including the north coast, on my visits to England over the years! Both these friends have since moved away from Norfolk so I probably won’t be visiting there again. But I have my memories!

    • Good morning,
Norwich is really a fine city, as it’s calling this itself. It’s the centre of literature and so it became one of the few “Literary Cities of the World” (Unesco) some years ago. The disadvantages of the North Norfolk coast is that’s more expensive (house prices) than London. Norwich is a very affluent city as well with lots of culture like the famous Sainsbury’s Centre of Visual Art. We love to live here after living in Finland, Sweden, the US, Canada and Nepal.

  48. Dina, This post is just wonderful, for one the photography, I love seeing the rural parts of England, the very old towns and countryside. London has plenty of places set up for tourists, but that is it, most places are set up for tourists, I like seeing the towns and vilages where people actually live and shop and their daily lives!
More over from the perspective of a blogger I love the slide shows within your post, I must see if I can do this on my blog, this is something I have never thought about doing, until I saw yours! Often I want to include more photography in a blog post than I think I should put in, as some readers attention span is short and do not want to see a mile of pictures, this a perfect way to still have a reasonable length of post and still fit in lots of photography. Thank you so much Dina for the inspiration to look into doing this. As always I am captivated by your posts, stories and photography, now by your blogging style and workings of your blogs.

We are actually two people, Dina (Norwegian photographer) and Klausbernd (the Master, writer), and our two Bookfayries Siri and Selma. We all together design and discuss every post before publishing it. Our feeling is: Few but really great pictures only. We want to focus the concentration on extraordinary pictures following the idea “less is more”.
Cley next the Sea/North Norfolk coast where we live is a lovely village with very few tourists but some cottages used as holiday homes. Fortunately our area is much too expensive to attract mass tourism.
