Scotland’s Mystical Valley

We Bookfayries 👭 with our fjord deep blue eyes are beings of the North. Our exciting drive through Glencoe gave us the perfect foretaste of the North. In this deserted valley, formed by fire and ice, the most influential literary forgery was set. A dramatic scenery indeed! We couldn’t resist giggling that nearly all European writers believed in Ossian, cleverly invented by Macpherson as “the Homer of the North“. Goethe even quoted parts of  Ossian in his “The Sorrows of Young Werther” –  a rather embarrassing work of his anyhow. For us the scenery of Glencoe radiated Ossianic darkness.

Wir Buchfeen 👭 mit fjordtiefen blauen Augen haben den Norden im Blut. Einen Vorgeschmack des Nordens bot die Fahrt durch Glencoe. In dem vom vulkanischen Feuer geprägten, später vom Eis abgeschliffenen menschenleeren Gebirgstal spielt die berühmteste Fälschung der Literaturgeschichte. Uns blieb die Spucke weg ob dieser dramatischen Kulisse. Zugleich konnten wir uns des Kicherns nicht erwehren, dass nicht nur der eigentlich clevere Goethe diesen von Macpherson erdachten Ossian als “Homer des Nordens” ansah und sogar Teile dieser Fälschung in “Die Leiden des jungen Werther” aufnahm – ein eh peinliches Werk. Wir fanden diese Landschaft von ossianischer Düsterkeit geprägt.

Here the James Bond film “Skyfall” was filmed but the Ossianic darkness was horribly exaggerated. Anyway, we don’t like the last James Bond films, as the new actors don’t have this twinkle in their eyes like Sean Connery. They take it all much too seriously.

Wisst ihr, dass hier der James Bond Film “Skyfall” gedreht wurde, in dem jedoch diese ossianisch Düsternis maßlos übertrieben wurde. Uns gefallen die letzten James Bond Filme eh nicht, da den neuen Darstellern dieses Augenzwinkern von Sean Connery fehlt. Sie nehmen sich so lächerlich ernst.

Back to Glencoe’s landscape where scenes of the Harry Potter films were filmed as well. We didn’t know if we should laugh or cry reading all these superlatives in the Fairy Guides our teacher would have crossed out with her big red pen. Want a taste? Glencoe is most famous, most historic, most scenic, most romantic, most magnificent of all Scottish glens. OK, that’s true, though writing it in this way is more than bad style. Although Glencoe was full of Japanese, Chinese and US American tourists who seem to love such descriptions. Fortunately they didn’t discourage us to visit this magical valley. The sheer scale of it with those surrounding mountains makes Glencoe special. Unfortunately Dina and our Master forbade us 👭 to fly over this extraterrestrial land to those misty mountains reminding us of the land of Mordor. Instead we had to trudge with Dina over boggy moors for her to get the right photos and for us to get wet feet. It’s a hard life for little fairies!

Zurück zur Landschaft von Glencoe, wo auch Harry Potter Szenen gefilmt wurden. Da gingen uns beim Lesen unserer Feen-Führer die Augen über vor so vielen Superlativen, die unsere Lehrerin sicher dick mit Rot ausgestrichen hätten. Hier eine Kostprobe: Glencoe ist der berühmteste, romantischste, großartigste, malerischste und historischste Glen in ganz Schottland. Das stimmt zwar, aber ob man es so schreiben kann? Auf jeden Fall wimmelte es hier von Japanern, Chinesen und USAmerikanern, die augenscheinlich auf solchen Beschreibungen stehen. Zum Glück haben wir uns vom Reiseführerüberschwang nicht abschrecken lassen. Glencoe ist wirklich besonders. Ein breites Tal, dessen Ausmaße uns staunen ließen. Begrenzt wird es von dunklen Bergen, die uns ans Land Mordor erinnerten. Dina und Masterchen verboten uns, zu den nebelverhangenen Bergen über diese außerirdisch wirkende Weite zu fliegen. So mussten wir mit Dina durchs matschige Moorland stapfen, um eindrucksvolle Fotos und nasse Füße zu bekommen. Als kleine 👭Feen hat man einiges zu erleiden!

Legendary Fingal, Ossian’s father, supposedly lived here. Some place-names still remind on this Scottish hero, who defeated the Viking King Aragon, who happily lives on in fantasy novels. Much later the McDonald’s lived in this Glen whose name was besmirched by the American junk food chain. Fortunately the National Trust bought in 1935 quite some of Glencoe’s land preserving commercial exploitation. So we don’t have a McDonald here. The old McDonald Clan was already nearly wiped out in “The Massacre of Glencoe” in the 17th c by British troops for being involved in the Jacobite uprising. Very secretly we sneaked off to meet the restless ghost of John MacDonald, Dominus Insularum, at Loch Ba when Dina was busy handling her tripod and lenses. He gave us the many useful hints what to see on the Western Isles.

Fingal, der Vater von Ossian, soll in diesem Tal gelebt haben und einige Ortsnamen erinnern noch heute an die Legende. Er soll nämlich der Besieger des Wikinger Anführers Aragon, der heute in der Fantasieliteratur sein Unwesen treibt, gewesen sein. Viel später lebten hier die McDonalds, deren Namen durch die amerikanische Junkfoodkette besudelt wurde. Zum Glück kaufte der National Trust 1935 einen großen Teil dieses Tals, um es vor gnadenloser Vermarktung zu retten. So gibt’s keinen McDonalds hier. Der alte McDonald Clan war übrigens schon Ende des 17. Jh. wegen seiner Beteiligung am Jakobiten-Aufstand im “Massaker von Glencoe” fast völlig ausgerottet worden. Ganz im Geheimen, als Dina mit Stativ und Objektiven voll beschäftigt war, trafen wir am Loch Ba den ruhelosen Geist von John MacDonald, Dominus Insularum, der uns beste Tipps gab, was auf den Western Isles zu besuchen sei.

      There are some tourists in Glencoe but the area is that big that it doesn’t matter. The nature is so much bigger that these tourist don’t disturb its beauty.

      a cold wind came sweeping down the mountains, but we were that fascinated by the light and the landscape that we didn’t mind the cold. That’s the hard life of being together with a photographer you have to carry cameras and lenses up and down the mountains.

  7. Oh, it looks so magically fairytale-like! I can see why all those movies were filmed there. I particularly like the light! I have a thing for light. There is nothing as beautiful as when you get a play of light in the sky falling down on the landscape, colors shifting and changing as the darkness contrasts the light. It takes my breath away! 😍😍😍😍

      thanks for commenting. The first time our dear Master visited Glencoe many, many years ago when he was a child. At least in his memory he was the only person there – a feeling like the only person on the whole world.
      It wasn’t too bad when we were there because the area is that big. At most places we didn’t see another person. But we were there mid April on our way up North. When we passed through Glencoe on our way back home at the end of June there were much more people around – but actually not too bad.

    • We have an increasing number of tourists in New Zealand and our infrastructure isn’t really coping. It is becoming a huge problem, for both locals and visitors.

      thank you very much 🙂 We have had an easy weekend. We picked a lots and lots of samphire (sea asparagus) and were reading and gardening.
      We didn’t know that so many tourist visit New Zealand, well, they are everywhere.

    • I’ve never tried samphire. How do you prepare it? (I am assuming you will eat it).
      Tourists come to NZ because it is marketed as “clean and green” but of course, their presence in such large numbers means that it is increasingly not so.

      Samphire is a delicacy. The preparation is very easy. First you wash it, that’s most of the work, then you boil it for a couple a minutes. You eat it with butter and 🥔 potatoes. Very 😋 yummy 😋 Some peple eat it uncooked with vinegar, but we prefer it cooked – but not longer than 5 min.
      If you eat it in a Restaurant it’s quite expensive, but here it grows everwhere where it’s teice a day over and twice under water. As we have quite a tide here we have this situation on every beach.
      We hope that you don’t get bothered by to the tourists.

      I am told that our local samphire is not quite so fleshy as yours, but equally tasty. Now I will wait for the rain to stop (though I am not holding my breath) so that I can plan a foraging trip.

  19. Ich war nur bis Inverness. Und es ist lange her. Euer Beitrag macht mir große Lust weiter nach Norden in Schottland zu fahren. Es ist diese Kargheit der Natur in ihrer Schönheit die wohl so fasziniert? Auch die Ahnung wie wenig Natur braucht. Und das Felsen lebt. Danke für die Bilder dazu und den Text. Vielleicht müssen wir uns hier bewähren. Ich habe die vor vielen Jahren erworbene Decke mit ?, welcher Tartan war das?, neu eingefasst, das Label ist verblast und mir einen Umhang in Pringles im letzten Jahr zugelegt. Der erste Tartan ist der meiner Kindheit – der andere der meines Erwachsenseins in Form eines Glockenrockes in einem Bonner Herren- und Damenbekleidungsgeschäft gegenüber von “van Dorp” in den 80iger Jahren erworben, das es schon lange nicht mehr gibt. Aber es gab Kleidung fürs Leben……., Kleidung für jede Gelegenheit. Sommerlich sonnige Grüsse aus L Ruth

    • Ja, liebe Ruth, wir glauben auch, dass ein Faktor der Faszination dieser Landschaft ihre Kargheit ist, der andere ist das ständig wechselnde Licht. Das zusammen ergibt eine Stimmung, die den Betrachter ergreift.

      Das ist einer der klassisch schottischen Tartans. Übrigens hatte Masterchen als Jungendlicher so einen Kilt. Da gibt’s ein Bild, das er aber sehr unter Verschluss hält.

  21. Liebe Buchfeen mit den fjordtiefen Augen, heute schreibe ich auf Deutsch weil ich diesen schottischen Witz dann besser erzählen kann, ist das nicht absurd? Also: Zwei Schotten haben sich nach dem großen langen Sintflutregen auf eine Bergspitze gerettet. Da treibt mit anderen Sachen eine braunrotkarierte Schottenmütze an ihnen vorbei. Der eine sagt: Hey, das ist doch die Mütze vom alten McDonald! Der andere: Sehr gut möglich! Der mäht auch bei jedem Wetter seinen Rasen…
    Okay, diesen Witz gab es lange vor diesem komischklebrigen Junkfood. Die Landschaft spricht so laut und gewaltig in meine Betrachtung. Die Teuto-Fee staunt. Die Berge erinnern mich in ihrer düsteren Schroffheit an die Berge Norwegens bei Hirtshals, wo die Fähre ablegte Richtung Esbjerg, Denmark.
    Sean Connery war der beste Bond ever…
    Alle anderen fand ich danach irgendwie unecht…
    Danke. Wieder tiefe Eindrücke, gewürzt mit Lokalkolorit und bepudert mit Feenzauber.

      ja, diese schroffen Berge sind die Rückzugsorte aller unserer Freunde wie Trolle, Spirits und andere Feenkollegen. Sie liebenes, in solch leerer Lanschaft zu wohnen. Und solche Geistwesen wie wir, du glaubst es kaum, haben das Previleg keine Genehmigung für ihre Wohnstätten zu benötigen. Selbst der National Trust lässt sie frei in Glencoe wohnen – und das heißt viel, da der NT eigentlich für alles Geld nimmt.

    • Die Trolle sind Feenbrüder, Elementarwesen, oft leben sie ganz geheim als Berge, doch der Sonnenwarme Fels ist Brudergestein, nicht wahr, Ihr klugen Feenschwestern? Die Spirits flitzen überall herum. Sie orben sich in meine Schnappschüsschen und fliegen schnell wie Worte, die Licht sein können. Diese Landschaft, ich empfinde sie weit und voller Platz für Träume, ein Ruhepol den hin- und hereilenden Augen. Und ja,es sind Rückzugsorte. Unsere gestressten Menschen suchen sie auf wie der Stein die Weisen.☺️✨

    • Ja, Sirilein und Selmachen sind in zwei wilde Trolle verliebt, deswegen zieht es sie stets zum Brudergestein hin. In Glencoe flitzen die Spirits so flugs dahin, dass wir sie kaum sahen. Das ist nämlich sozusagen eine Großwohnanlage für Spirits. Sie sind die Hüter der Landschaft und der Bergwanderer. Da sie Leckermäulchen sind, haben Siri und Selma stets etwas Marzipan für sie dabei. Aber sie dürfen nicht zu viel naschen, denn dann werden sie zu schwer und mit dem Fliegen will’s nicht mehr so recht klappen. In den Bergen findet der/die Erwählte Steine der Weisen, die für den Naiven unsichtbar sind. Siri und Selma tragen jede einen solchen kleinen runden Stein mit sich in ihren bunt bestickten Feensäckchen.

  23. Es ist so schön dort. Bei der letzten Motorradreise haben wir einen Abstecher dort hin gemacht, weil Gerard Butler in einem Interview so davon geschwärmt hat. Er stammt wohl aus der Gegend 😉

      auf unserer Fahrt in den Norden Schottlands haben wir viele Gruppen von Motorradfahrern getroffen, die immer gut drauf waren. Uns fiel auch auf, dass die meisten sehr gemütlich fuhren.
      Also fahre immer fein vorsichtig, take care!

    • Hallo, ja es ist ein wundervolles Land mit tollen Menschen. Ich war 2x mit dem Motorrad dort. Wegen des Wetters würde ich beim nächsten Mal ein anderes Transportmittel wählen. So manches Mal waren Wind/Sturm und Regen grenzwertig für’s Motorradfahren… Liebe Grüße aus dem sonnigen Do, Annette

    • Wir begegneten diesmal fast mehr Fahrräder als Motorräder, Annette. Das hängt mit der megaschönen NC500 zusammen, der zweitschönsten Roadtrip der ganzen Welt. Wäre bestimmt toll für euch. Das Wetter ist eine Glückssache. Wir hatten drei Tage mit 30° an der NC 500, puuuuh, sonst überwiegend schönes, spannendes und erfrischendes Wetter. Schottland kann man nicht wegen des Wetters besuchen. Wir haben uns eingehend beraten lassen, sind Mitte Mai aufgebrochen und Ende Juni zurückgefahren und wir sind zum Glück keine Midges begegnet! Das war unsere größte Sorge.

    • Iiih, Midges, sie sind mir auf der Durchreise nach Irland begegnet, ansonsten gab es gkücklicherweise keine weiteren Begegnungen.
      Wetter ist dort Glückssache: Beim ersten Mal war ich Ende Mai/Anfang Juni dort, beim zweiten Mal Ende Juli/Anfang August. Es ist, wie es ist. Das Land ist nicht umsonst so schön grün, bloß für Zweirräder taugst es eben manchmal nicht 😉 Liebe Grüße, Annette

    • Ja, in Schottland braucht man so zwei Feen wie Siri und Selma, die einen guten Draht zu den Wolkenschiebern haben, sonst kann ich mir gut vorstellen, dass eine Motorradtour dort nur nass und gefährlich sein kann. Wir waren ja mit unserem Auto unterwegs, in dem es auch bei Regen und Sturm kuschelig gemütlich ist.

    • You may know that our dear Dina is Norwegian and she thinks that Scotland’s westcoast is quite similar to the Norwegian westcoast as well. Both have the same formation history especially during the last ice age. The advantage of Scotland’s North is that it’s not so touristy and expensive like Norway – yet. We will present pictures of the Orkneys later.
      We hope that the situation will not turn in the direction it went in Iceland which is jam packed with tourists and most of the people hate the tourists there. That happened very quickly. When we used to visit Iceland several times 20 or more years ago, we met as many tourists there as in the North of Scotland now.
      But we shouldn’t complain. We are part of the tourist crowd as well. And isn’t it typical for the tourist to complain about other tourists? Therefore we finish here and wishing you a great weekend

    • Thanks for your respons, and yes – I know Dina is Norwegian! 🙂 We used to communicate whilst I was working the VG Network several years ago.
      And yers, I’ve seen the signs (as have you). Somewhere in France (I think) they are closing a place to tourism entirely. At Mallorca people can no longer afford to buy housing and tourists haver been shot at! Fortunately we have the possibility to travel within Norway. Most thing may be ruined if there becomes to much of it – where ever you are in the world!

    • Where we live in an Area Of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the North Norfolk coast, no local can afford a cottage any more. The ruining effect in our village are the holiday homes. More and more cottages and houses are empty most of the year – it’s 60% right now.
      Anyway, times are changing and we have to go with it. On the other hand our village is so pretty as it never has been before.

  30. As always, your combination of thoughtful words and excellent photos captures the spirit of the place so well. I can almost see the wandering ghosts of the clansmen, if I look hard enough! I have actually been there, some time ago now. It is very good to see that the area is unchanged since my visit.

    Handy Empfang haben die dort nicht wo ihr wart oder?!

    Früher zeigte man Kindern noch ganz einfache Dinge: Finger auf Handrücken senkrecht stellen, hast du die Zeit. Spuckefinger in den Wind, weißt du die Windrichtung…usw…

    Was Erde kann!!! Und wie großartig habt ihr das in Szene gesetzt!!!

    • Liebstes Pialein fein
      wir Feen benötigen kein Handy oder Smartphone; wir benutzen Gedankenübertragung mit Lichtgeschwindigkeit. Das hat den Vorteil, dass keine Kosten entstehen und es sogar abhörsicher ist, da wir natürlich Feeisch senden.

      wir benutzen unsere smartphones nicht so häufig, deswegen wissen wir gar nicht, ob’s dort Empfang gibt. Wir nehmen an, dass das Netz dort eher schwach ist. Man ist ja dort entrückt von der smartphone Welt, was zum Charme dieser Gegend beiträgt. Welch ein Previleg, nicht erreichbar zu sein und nicht im Netz surfen zu müssen!

      ja, die schottischen Highlands sind großartig! Je mehr man nach Norden kommt, desto atemberaubender werden sie. Wir machten diese Reise zu den Orkneys und den Norden Schottlands im Auto in kleinen Etappen, immer auch zwischendurch mit Bergwanderungen, dann ist das ist gar nicht so anstrengend, wenn auch die Entfernungen bis zur Nordküste Schottlands groß sind.

  35. Liebe Hanne, ich will dich das schon länger fragen, ob du deine Bilder nachbearbeitest oder sind sie, was und wie sie sind? Wie auch immer noch, ich finde, dass du einen riesigen Schritt gemacht hast, es sind zauberhafte Bilder! Und den Norden mit seinen dramatischen Himmeln liebe ich ja sowieso.

    • Guten Tag, liebe Ulli,
      die Lichteffekte in den Bildern sind natürlich und kein Produkt der Post-Produktion. Es ist ja ein Problem mit diesen Bearbeitungsprogrammen, dass neuerdings alle Himmel und Lichteffekte gleich aussehen, da jeder das gleiche Progrmm benutzt. Wir finden, man sieht, was natürlich und was bearbeitet ist. Aber Hanne-Dina bearbeitet ihre Bilder auch und wird dir sicher noch etwas dazu schreiben. Gerade ist sie im Garten und erntet Äpfel und unsere letzten Kirschpflaumen.

    • Hei liebe Ulli,
      ja, ich bearbeite alle meine Bilder nach. Ich muss es tun, da ich ausschliesslich RAW Bilder mache. Ich arbeite nur im M (manuell) Modus und kann somit sehr viel variieren und experimentieren. RAW Bilder sind irgend “platt und flach” und die sind nicht dafür gedacht, direkt aus der Kamera veröffentlicht zu werden. Die müssen durch einen RAW Konverter und dann bearbeite ich sie im Lightroom und Photoshop. Es gibt überhaupt kein Ende, hier kann man immer dazu lernen und ich probiere ständig Neues, auch verschiedene (echte) Filter bei der Landschaftsphotographie. Neuerdings ist es sehr populär, Sonnenstrahlen und Sonnen im LR nachzumachen, Ich finde so etwas a no go. Du siehst es sofort, dass es fake ist. Im Netz wimmelt es von künstlichen Illusionen. In LR kannst du das Beste aus deinem RAW Bild holen, wenn du nachträglich Licht und Schatten, Kontrast und Belichtung und viel mehr justierst. Je mehr du beherrschst, desto besser wird dein Bild. Wenn du .jpg aufnimmst, hast du weniger Möglichkeiten die Bilder zu bearbeiten. Ich habe eine gute (schwere) Kamera und drei sehr gute (sehr schwere) Objektive. Die besten Aufnahmen entstehen meistens mit dem Weitwinkelobjektiv Nikon Nikkor 14-24mm. Diese Landschaftsaufnahmen müssen dann auch wenig nachbearbeitet werden. Wie fotografierst du, Ulli? Jpg oder RAW oder vielleicht beides?

Ich habe noch wenig Erfahrung mit RAW und Lightroom, das ich eh erst gerade ganz neu geschenkt bekommen habe und mich nun sehr langsam einfummel, sodass ich hauptsächlich (noch) Jpg fotografiere – deine Antwort inspiriert mich mehr auszuprobieren.

  37. It can often be very difficult to capture the magnificence of scenes of the scale of Glencoe in two dimensions. You have done Glencoe proud Hanne. These pictures are simply stunning. Well done! As for Klausbernd and the bookfayries, it can sometimes be difficult accompanying a photographer. We have to get those pictures and sometimes that can indeed mean trudging through bogs to get the angle we want. The picture you see in your mind’s eye. It’s so nice that you support Hanne in her work in the way that you do.

      thank you so much for your kind words. Well, it was sometimes hard helping Dina carrying all her equippment up the mountains and through bogs. When we went further North the weather became quite hot and it was challenge carrying this heay equippment up the mountains. But our dear Dina always rewarded us with a great picnic.
      By the way some of the pictures are taken from the car driving. One has to be that quick taking a picture in the Glen as the light is constantly changing.

    I completely agree with Connery’s twinkle, he made that role his own. Happened upon his yacht years ago when it was parked in Palm Beach on the intracoastal waterway – you guessed it, she was named the ‘007’!!!

  41. We visited Glencoe on such a moody, cloudy day–maybe it is always that way, or at least the weather seemed appropriate given the dramatic and dark history of the place. The photo of the sun breaking through the very dark clouds is stunning!

  47. Wonderful pictures, just fantastic. When these dramatic masses of dark clouds appear to touch the peaks, it suggests to me that the mountains are recalling eras of volcanic past lives. Very well done. Where I am now, the clouds are just dull gray clumps of cotton wool, over flattened little hills, making us feel like we’re just another sedimentary layer of hardening mud! 🙂 RPT

      indeed, it is easy to dream of past times in Glencoe when there was an ancient super vulcano that erupted 420 million years ago for the last time (during the silurian periode). Of course the landscape was totally different then but dreaming doesn’t care 😉
      Glencoe is wind channel and therefore the clouds come and go. You usually don’t have a constant layer clouds for a longer periode. We hope you will get some wind blowing the clouds away at yours.

Und ich bin mir immer noch nicht im Klaren, welches Format [RAW oder JPG] ich nun vorziehen soll. Im Augenblick speichere ich noch beide; mit meinen zwei Speicherkarten habe ich ja genuegend Platz. JPG ist dann fuer Fotos, die ich nicht nachbearbeite, RAW fuer Nachbearbeitungen. RAW nehme ich aber grundsaetzlich, wenn ich per “”Bracketing” 3 Serienaufnahmen mit unterschiedlicher Belichtung fuer HDR schiesse.
    Noch eine Frage hier: ist der Rucksack, den der “Sherpa” schleppt, Dinas Fotorucksack? Da koennte ich noch einem Tipp gebrauchen, da ich auch mit dem Gedanken spiele, mir einen Rucksack fuer meine Fotoausruestung zuzulegen. Welchen hat Dina?

  57. The brochure superlatives are totally unnecessary. These striking images do it for me, but for anyone who goes there, obviously just being in the landscape should be quite enough. Just stand there and take it in, and be one with it. This is what your photographs convey, Dina, so congrats on that, and thank you for bringing it to my screen. Superb! (I do think of going to Scotland though!)

    • Oh dear, we can tell you selecting the right photos was a challenge. There were about 500 pics from Glencoe and we all four were looking them over and over again. We think it’s important to present photos that not every travel guide and tourist shows but on the other hand they have to catch the atmosphere, the gist, and, of course, they should be technically perfect. It’s a bit like in our texts that should make a difference beyond clichees, give infos as well as they should make the reader smile. There is such a flood of texts and/with pictures that one has to reflect how to play with the horizon of expectation of the perceiver. Therefore we need this two weeks for designing a special blog that’s not boring for our visitors. And we are very happy when we succeed and our visitors give a positive feedback.

Ich seh schon, nicht nur im Schwarzwald ist es schön, na ja, weiß ich eigentlich schon lange, aber versuche nicht zu sehr daran zu denken, in welchen Ländern und Erdteilen es sehenswerte Gebite gibt, die geradezu darauf warten, dass man diese als leidenschaftlicher Fotograf besucht.       gerade sind wir von Blakeney nach Haus gekommen, wo’s den greasy pole sahen, das größte Volksfest des Jahres hier mit Bombenstimmung.
      Ja, Schottland ist schon beeindruckend und auch berührend. Neben der großartigen Landschaft ist es das ständig wechselnde Licht. Aber du präsentierst doch feine Fotos vom Schwarzwald, deren milde Romantik besticht. Du weißt doch, die Schönheit liegt im Auge des Betrachters bzw. des Fotografen. Wer deine Fotos betrachtet, den zieht es in den Schwarzwald. Und was Schottlands Whisky ist, ist euer Gin 😉

It’s many years now since my visit to Scotland. I drove through Glencoe on my way to Fort William where I attended a congress. Unfortunately, I didn’t have any time to dwell any longer, such a shame.       hier hat es heute Nacht zum Glück ordentlich 💦 geregnet und mir gefallen die aktuellen 19° ausserordentlich gut. Ich bin zu nichts zu gebrachen, wenn es über 🌞 30° ist. Ich finde es toll, wie du dich im heißen Texas akklimatisierst hast! 👍🏻 38° ziemlich warm zu bezeichnen ist feines englisches understatement. 😊

      Zu dem Fotorucksack: ich habe vier Stück. Meine erste Anschaffung liebe ich und bin oft damit gereist. Das Teil ist groß, vintagelook, viereckig und aus beigen Stoff (was völlig unpraktisch ist, aber schön aussieht). Es hat oben eine große Kammer die von oben geöffnet werden kann, dort habe ich bis zu 10 Bücher oder andere Sachen stauen können beim hin und her fliegen. Für meine Flugreisen war der perfekt, jedoch nicht für reine Fotoausflüge. Noch kommt dazu, es wurde immer strenger und strenger mit dem Handgepäck. Dieses Teil ist eigentlich eine Nummer zu groß um als Handgepäck auf Flughafenbusse akzeptiert zu werden.

      Das sind alles Sachen die du bei der Anschaffung überlegen solltest. Mein Tipp; kauf dir einen der eine Nummer größer ist als was du augenblicklich brauchst. Ich bin nach Schottland mit 2 Rucksäcke voller Kameraausstattung gefahren. Das war kein problem, da wir mit dem Auto gefahren sind, aber du merkst, mein bester Fotorucksack (Lowepro,nicht auf dem Bild zu sehen) ist heute zu klein.Den habe ich gekauft als ich die D800 und drei Objektive gekauft habe. Ich habe noch 2 weitere Nikons, mehrere Objektive und du musst bedenken, auf Reisen brauchst du mehr Raum als nur für Kamera und Objektiv, Ladekabel, Notebookkabel, Speichermedien, Kartenleser, Ladekabel für iPad/Handy …

      Lowepro und mehrere ähnliche Firmen produzieren gute Säcke. Alle sind für schlecht Wetter ausgerüstet, unten gibt es einen zusätzlichen Regenschutz den man rausziehen kann. Es gibt viele kleinere Teile, mit einem Schultergurt, die Kleinsäcke sind auch gut für kleinere Trips. Da würde ich einen aussuchen mit Zugriff von oben, so kommst du schneller an deiner Kamera. Sonst musst du immer absetzen, wie mit dem Rucksack.
      Ich verreise/fliege zum Leidwesen Klausbernd immer noch recht viel und ich suche ein Teil mit Rollen, das ich am Flughafen hinter mir herziehen kann und sonst auf den Rücken tragen kann. Das perfekt Teil habe ich noch nicht gefunden. Ich muss stets Größe und Gewicht beachten. Und Trolleyausstattung bedeutet mehr Gewicht.
      Ich liebäugle sehr mit Thinktank, die sind mir jedoch zu teuer. Thinktank ist eine Klasse für sich, mit besonderer Diebstahlabsicherung, GPS, die Kameraausstattung ist top geschützt. Die Auswahl in USA ist sehr viel größer als in Europa, ist aber hauptsächlich für Profis auf Reisen.
      Den Rucksack auf dem Bild habe ich vor Jahren für 40 € auf Ebay ersteigert. Der leistet mir immer noch gute Dienste, insbesondere bei Tagesausflüge hier in Norfolk. Der Vorbesitzer hat den neuwertig abgestoßen, weil schnell zu klein geraten.
      Also, wenn du einen holst, überleg was alles auf einer Flugreise nach Schottland reinpassen muss. Dann googelst du “camera bags best value” und dann bin ich sicher, du findest einen dir zusagst.

    • Anmerkung:
      ich habe bei Amazon mehrere Kamera bag inlets gekauft. Die sind so was von super, kosten kaum etwas. Zuerst kaufte ich ein Inlet für ein große Handtasche. Das Inlet hat zwei Fächer, so wie die man von einem Fotorucksack kennt. Damit kann ich eine Kamera und zwei Objektive sicher verstauen. Ich habe habe einen superleichten, schicken Tagesrucksack mit einer diesen Inlets ausgestattet und das ich heute eigentlich was ich am meisten benutze. Die Handtaschen bleiben zu Hause, im Rucksack habe ich immer meine Kamera und etwas mehr dabei.

Wonderful atmospheric photos… loved your wry comments too … am so suspicious of MacDonalds that i’ve never even tried them… and after one stab at james Bond – Goldfinger – when I was having morning sickness in the evening, I hated James Bond et al so much I never watched any more… on the other hand, hilarious Harry Potter really got around… I last encountered him on the grand staircase at Christ Church in Oxford !!!

      we are not James-Bond-film-fans either. We saw several of these films but find this action filled with product-placements rather boring.
      Glencoe is a place ideal for filming not only beause of its beauty but of its emptiness as well. Only one road in this vast area and nearly no houses.

  72. Spectacular landscapes, especially with the sun shining through a gap in the clouds. The Scottish moors have to be one of the most beautiful scenes in the U.K. I remember them well, especially for the miles of treeless areas once you get off the main roads.. Wonderful images by Dina.

  74. Breathtaking, expansive, and rugged. True beauty, and what a treat to see that it really looks like this, for real, and is in a way, MUCH more special than any effects added in a movie.
    Intriguing with the lone house, in the windswept landscape, with it’s pine trees actually surviving around it.
    Oh, and I like Dina’s sherpa – so handy to have! 🙂

      maybe it was the time of the year (May). We didn’t meet much tourists there. Okay, there were some but the area is that vast that it didn’t matter and it was easy to avoid them. On our way back in June there were much more tourists around but still no problem to escape them. We suppose it might be different in Juli and August.

    da habt ihr aus euren Erlebnissen mal wieder eine wunderbare Geschichte herausdestilliert. Ich liebe all die Anspielungen im Text,, Shakespeare, James Bond (ja, diese furchtbare Ego-Sache produziert diese lustige Selfie-Mania, mit der ich leider so gar nicht mehr anfangen kann), McDonalds FastFood, Goethe Harry Potter, Ossian und Schiller in einem Text über eine solche Feenlandschaft, herrlich. Habe ihn mit großem Vergnügen gelesen. Und der kleine nette Schuss auf den Werther – ich musste sehr Grinsen “und schoss den Vogel in die Ecke”, um mit einer anderen Lächerlichkeit zu antworten. Masterchen Du merkst schon, ich habe Deinen Text seeehr gerne gelesen. Und mich mal wieder zu so einem seltsamen Bandwurmtext gekitzelt.
    Jetzt aber zu diesen phantastischen Landschaftsbildern. Das sind veritable Kunstwerke, liebe Dina, und eine wirklich buchfeeenhaften Übersetzung dieser geheimnisvoll mystischen Landschaft. Dass Du mich damit sofort gekriegt hast verwundert mich immer noch. Immerhin bin ich ja derjenige, der den dusterfinstern Schwarzwald bei Rottweil für ein tiefes schwarzes (sic!) Loch hält 👺👹👿!
    So liebe Fab Four, jetzt stoppe ich mal lieber hier, ist sowieso wie immer ein halber Roman geworden.

      über deinen lieben Kommentar habe ich mich besonders gefreut, da du so ausführlich auf meinen Text eingegangen bist, den ich zusammen mit der lieben Siri Buchfee schrieb. Über das Plenzdorf-Zitat musste ich schmunzeln 🙂 Ja, “Die neuen Leiden des jungen W” finden wir weitaus amüsanter als Goethes Text, der ja dem Herr Geheimrat zwar weltberühmt machte, aber im Alter selbst so peinlich war, dass er sich davon distanzierte. Siri lachte sich schief, als sie des jungen Werthers Leiden las, und seitdem dürfen wir nicht mehr Gelb mit Blau tragen.
      Uns macht es Spaß solch anspielungsreiche Texte augenzwinkernd zu schreiben und den Erwartungshorizont des Lesers ein klein wenig zu verschieben, was doch einen Text stets interessant macht. Dabei versuchen wir den Unterhaltungsaspekt nicht zu vernachlässigen, denn wir wollen doch, dass unsere Leser Spaß beim Lesen unserer Texte haben – was besonders Siri sehr betont und mir auf die Finger klopft, wenn es zu informationslastig wird.

  77. Glencoe is really a special place. I was hiking in the Death Valley. Great landscape! It was nearly the hole time raining as I stayed in Glencoe, but for the Rannoch Moor it was perfect! Stunning pics and now my anticipation of my pictures from Scotland is growing… 😉 I wish you a nice weekend, Simone

    • I there a valley in Glencoe called Death Valley, where many hikers have lost theirs lives, especially in winter? Or do you meant the hottest spot ♨️ on earth in the Mojave desert? When I visited some thirty years ago, the metal framing on camera started to melt.😅😎

    • Oh, I wrote really Death. No the valley is called Lost Valley or Hidden Valley 🙂 The valley was used by members of Clan Macdonald to hide cattle and other livestock, whether their own or stolen from others (wikipedia). It was a nice track without the metal of the camera being melted 😉

      We think that Glencoe needs dramatic skies and even some rain and wind. But we can easily say so because we didn’t had much time for hiking there because we were on our way to the Western Isles and the Orkneys.

  79. Awesome, awesome, Fab Four! It is hard to believe this is the same place we explored seven years ago. We had read that the A route through Glencoe is one of the most beautiful roads in the whole UK, maybe the whole world, so we went there from Stirling to Inverness. We had severe fog and later heavy rain. What a pity! No doubt about it, Dina would have captured the magic of the grey layer, but our pics just look grey and dull. We had very nice weather later on Loch Ness, but I think you are great artists, featuring the gloomy side of the history so eloquently. Great reading and fantastic illustrations. You draw us into the landscape and there’s no escape. Well done.

      we crossed on our trip this magnificent glen three times. The first time we had rain as well in the morning. As the sun came out in the evening we drove back (from our B&B nearby) through the glen under dramatic skies and on our way back we had quite nice weather there. The weather is changing there that quickly.

  81. For me, Glencoe ccombines dramatic scenery, mystery, brooding mountains often adorned with heavy clouds, and the shadow of the Glencoe Massacre. This post alludes to all of those themes and Dina’s photographs capture the mood of the location perfectly.

    Such lovely dramatic scenery – well done Fab Four for a beautiful post. And I am sure Dina very much appreciates her Sherpas to help with her heavy camera equipment. Scotland is soooo gorgeous it is a wonder we all don’t move there (but a good job we don’t otherwise it will become spoiled very soon). The first photo though reminded me quite oddly of a road I drove along near the Grand Canyon. No traffic, hills at either side of the toad and mountains in the distance. Hope you are having a dry weekend. Looking a bit thundery in Donny right now!

      we thought it is, but then we found in Dina’s secret hiding place some more …
      We wrote it already in our answer just above your commentary, we even were thinking of moving to Scotland. But actually not to the Glencoe area but to the Orkneys. We loved it very much being in Scotland. Well, we will probably go if Scotland gets independent and staying in the EU.
      Dina couldn’t do without us as her sherpas. She usually carries with her much too much stuff, cameras, lenses etc. and that it is all heavy. The big sherpa always got a big great malt whisky after work and the two small sherpas lots of icecream.
      Unfortunately we didn’t get much rain, just a few drops, rain in homoeopathic quantities. We long for real rain quite desperatly, our dear plants are suffering and Siri and Selma with them. If we are lucky we will get some real rain tonight. Hopefully it will fill our water butts and make our dear plants happy 🙂

      We are a bilingual blog because half of our visitors are German speaking and half are English speaking and sometimes we write Norwegian as well. It’s quite some work but we live in all these three languages.

  88. Wonderful, wonderful photostory once again! Congrtulations, you really stand out from the crowd. We spent a few days in the Glen Coe area during our visit to Scotland a few years ago. Such majestic mountains, green valleys and sparkling waterfalls, a truly beautiful area. We drove through the valley several times stopping for photos and taking walks. It only occasionally got crowded at the more popular scenic stops, especially when th elight was good for photography, but we had no problems with masses of tourists at all.

      We didn’t experience Glencoe very touristy neither. At some parking places there were some other 🚗 cars 🚗 but walking 🚶 just ten into the glen were on our own.

    • Leider, grrrrr … lieber Pit, du bist wieder im Spam gelandet. Was ist nun bloß los bei WP?

      Nur kurz, das wir jetzt gleich Samphire mit Royal Jersey potatoes essen werden.. so yummy und der Samphire haben wir heute im dem Salzmarschen von Morston selbst geerntet, lecker. Also, ich habe die gleich Erfahrungen wie du mit den Kommentaren gemacht. Kann es an den Reader liegen? Ich benutze oft den Reader, Klausbernd nie, aber ich schaffe niemals meine Abonnenten ohne den Reader zu besuchen. Dort ist es neuerdings ganz komisch. Ich lese einen Artikel, klicke auf Kommentieren und es erscheint: “schreiben Sie den ersten Kommentar zu diesen Artikel”. Ich schicke den Kommentar ab, der verschwindet ins Nirvana und es erscheint: “Schreiben Sie den ersten Kommentar….” Tatsächlich haben diese Artikel oft mehr als 50 Kommentare.
      Das macht keine gute Laune. Dann lieber einen leckeren Feierabenddrink. Cheers, lieber Pit. Mehr die Tage. Morgen bekommen wir Besuch von Laurence und Jackie aus Norwich. Wir werden gemeinsam einen Ausflug zum Scolt Head machen, worauf wir uns alle sehr freuen.

    das mit den Kommentaren ist schon ein Kreuz!
    Hier mal eine etwas ausfuehrlichere Auskunft dazu:
    Seit einer geraumen Zeit kann ich auf einer ganzen Reihe von Blogs nicht mehr kommentieren. Entweder landen die Kommentare im Spam-Ordner des Empfängers [und wer schaut da schon regelmäßig rein?], oder sie verschwinden direkt und total im elektronischen Nirwana. Ein wenig hat das mit dem Browser zu tun, den ich verwende, aber in manchen Fällen – wie jetzt neuerdings bei Euch – klappt kein einziger meiner Browser. Ich finde es frustrierend, besonders deswegen, weil es so scheint als ob das bei der überwiegenden Anzahl der Blogs, bei denen das passiert, irreversibel ist. Einmal als Spammer identifiziert, immer ein Spammer! So hat mir das jedenfalls einer der “Happiness Engineers” [der zwar nett war, mir aber nicht hat helfen können oder wollen] erklärt. Er meinte, ich müsse das mit den Leuten von Akismet [das ist die Anti-Spam-Software, die WP verwendet] klären. Total frustrierend das Ganze, aus zwei Gründen: zum Einen merken Viele ja gar nicht, dass ich kommentiert habe, und zum Anderen merke ich nicht, wenn ich aus dem Spam befreit wurde. Ich bekomme dann nämlich, obwohl ich ursprünglich ein Häkchen gesetzt hatte, dass ich bei weiteren Kommentaren [dazu zählen auch die Antworten auf meine] benachrichtigt werde möchte. Ich muss daher direkt auf den betreffenden Blogartikel gehen und nachschauen. Nicht nur lästig, sondern manchmal auch gar nicht möglich, es sei denn, ich führe Listen, wann ich wo zu welchem Artikel kommentiert habe. Und das Grundproblem bleibt ja bestehen: selbst wenn ich eine Antwort finde und darauf wieder antworte [bei Eurem Blog kann ich übrigens nicht zu einer Antwort antworten], verschwindet diese meine Antwort schon wieder im Spam-Ordner. Nur meine “Likes” scheinen immer durchzukommen. So merken die Leute wenigstens, dass ich ihren Blogs immer noch folge. Ob ich zusammen mit WP da noch eine Lösung finden werde? Ich glaube es kaum. Ach, noch eine Anmerkung dazu: es kann für die Einordnung eines Kommentars als Spam schon reichen, wenn man, wie ich hier vorhin, denselben Kommentar zwei Mal abschickt. Auch blöd!
    In diesem Zusammenhang einen ganz herzlichen Dank an die liebe Dina, dass sie mich aus dem Spamordner geholt hat!

    • Wir haben es z.Zt. bedeckt und auch kühler. Angenehme 18 Grad C, eine Temperatur, die wir lieben 🙂 🙂 Zuvor hatten wir zu agressive Sonne und Hitze. Es hat auch hier etwas geregnet, zumindest so viel, dass unsere Wassertonnen wieder gefüllt sind.

  100. “Sense of place” is overused but I’ll throw it out anyway. Standing amidst this landscape must be an experience like no other. Plenty of McDonald clan settled in my state of North Carolina in US. My maternal grandfather is MacIntyre. /susie

  110. What an amazing landscape. I don’t think I have visited Scotland since back in the 70’s. This extraordinary images make me want to go back. The photos are simply stunning. As to you small comment about James Bond, I mostly agree with, although I have enjoyed Daniel Craig’s character (and by the way he is suppose to do another Bond-film, despite saying he saying he was done after Spectre).

It’s such a beautiful country and the historical events at Glencoe, as well as its more recent association with Harry Potter, makes it a favourite destination for tourists, Your photos of are stunning and I thoroughly enjoyed reading your post.

      In Schweden 🇸🇪 haben wir auch einmal gewohnt und Dina ist in Norwegen 🇳🇴 nahe der schwedischen Grenze geboren.
      Schottland hat wirklich etwas Mystisches und besonders im Norden kamen auch wir uns oft so vor, als seien wir die einzigen Menschen weit und breit.

    • WOW .. kann ich nur wieder sagen .. der Norden Schottlands war wirklich ein Highlight! Wir hatten ein tolles Hotel dort .. das Tongue Hotel und einen kleinen suuuper Sandstrand mit hohen Dünen erwandert und entdeckt. Einfach schön. Toll dass ihr auch Verbindungen zu Schweden habt ! Vielleicht können euch die kleinen kurzen und prägnanten Lichtmomente von meiner Seite ab und zu mal Erinnerungen in den Alltag bringen? Snälla hälsningar och allt gott! Lovisa 😉

    • Wir hatten auch unter anderem ein wunderschönes Hotel, von dem wir gar nicht mehr wegfahren wollten, das Scourie Hotel in Scourie – north of Lochinver.
      Unser lieber Master ist teilweise bei Växjö in Småland aufgewachsen und war nach seinem ersten Studium für eine Kulturorganisation, Goethe Institut, in Finland 🇫🇮 und Schweden 🇸🇪 tätig, bevor er nach Kanada 🇨🇦 ging. Jetzt leben wir vier seit vielen Jahren an Norfolks 🇬🇧 wunderschöner Küste in einem großen Naturschutzgebiet bes. für Seevögel 🦆🦅🐥 und Seehunde. Wir berichten auf unserem Blog teilweise über unser Leben hier.

  129. So jetzt hat KleinBirkerSohn ausgeschlafen .. ich musste leider ganz schnell mit in die Koje gestern abend .. sorry! Oh dear .. die KInder. Euer Hoteltipp ist vermerkt .. um das Tongue Hotel herum liegt nicht viel 🙂 nur Wanderland 😉 und eine einsame Zufahrtsstraße .. man kann es also kaum verfehlen. Liegt in Tongue 😉 und die Bucht ist die Sandwood-Bay !

  133. Incredible post ~ such sceneries and land that looks as if it is unchanged over the centuries… and with the poetic writing, it all brings a smile to my face. Also have to like the shot of Dina’s sherpa 🙂 A keeper for sure!

    • Yes, I do because I studied Alfred Wegener’s theory of continental drift. Every part of the world was under water during at least one geological periode. Since the times Scotland was situated at the equator is was over and under water several times.
