It was raining and breezy. Excited we embarked the wavering ferry to the Orkneys. We knew that these islands are situated that far north as South Greenland. And then this Norse sounds of place names like Scapa Flow and Skara Brae. The sea was grey only occasionally lit-up by a beam of light that made the water shimmering.
Alles mutet nordisch an.
Orkneys’ colour is grey, the middle between light and darkness. As a colour of the achromatic centre it’s soothing. Here you find peace as Amy Sackville describes it in her beautifully actionless novel “Orkney“, she wrote after “The Still Point“. Orkney’s grey seems to be healing at least in Amy Liptrot’s novel “The Outrun“. We Bookfayries were astonished how many authors are born or have lived on this small archipelago. Grey enhances reflection.
We were still thinking about grey as a most variable colour walking with Dina and our Master the streets of Kirkwall. We have to get used to the straight clarity of the Protestant aesthetics. Even the most keen iconoclasts wouldn’t find some work here. Soon we became aware of the absence of any squiggle. Slightly shivering we firmly held our beloved Dina’s and Master’s hands. This grey is clear but above all hangs an air of the impersonal that is only disturbed by little groups of tourists like us. This grey symbolises introversion, it matches the character of the whalers, who supplied their ships here for going to Greenland dreaming of the grey whales.
Strolling through Stromness was different. The grey was light, not harsh that our wings were trembling. We fluttered happy above the small streets and winding lanes and even visited the Khyber Pass. Stromness was the port of last call for providing those unlucky expeditions which were after finding the NW Passage. It was in Stromness were John Franklin, much too old and fat, did stop before getting lost in the High Arctic. From here the grey men of the Hudson Bay Company were recruited like John Rae. He annoyed Charles Dickens so much by finding out on one of his expeditions that at least one of Franklin’s men ended up in the saucepan. Inuit delivered the proof. Grey is tough and so was Rae. He found the final portion of the NW Passage. – Many sailed from Orkney-grey to Arctic-white to be confronted with their own darkness.
Last not least Stromness was the mooring of Cptn. Cook’s ships after his death (in the pan as well).
The Orkneys are not the hub of the world nevertheless the brave geographer Pytheas claimed to have visited them in 325 A.D. and the Romans too have been that far North. But the biggest influence had the Norwegian king Harald with the second name “fair hair“. The Orkneys appeared to us more Norwegian than British. We felt immediately at home and enjoyed this harsh but honest atmosphere. Complicated for us was handling the constant wind. All the time we had to be on our guard not to be blown to next island.
The southern islands of the Orkneys form a sheltered bay called Scapa Flow. Our Viking ancestors moored their ships there during the Middle Ages and the British Navy used it in both wars. In this diver’s paradise we small Bookfayries learned diving and actually wreck diving. We were a bit frightened to go deep into the grey sea. Now we can understand our beloved Master who never ever puts his head under water. But wasn’t it great that he gave us this diving course?

You have contrived to instil some magic into the grey and bleak north of Britain. With your combination of words and pictures, you transport us beyond the places only heard of in weather forecasts, to an historical land of great contrast. In short, you have well-nigh managed the impossible.

Dear Pete
thank you VERY much for your kind words.
Grey is mostly discriminated but it’s colour worth looking at in a deeper way. It was not before the invention of BW photography that artists started thinking about grey. And it was a long way until grey became a fashionable colour as it is right now. This tension of black and white in grey is an adequate metaphore for the social differences in the north of the UK, isn’t it?
With lots of love xxx and wishing you a happy weekend

Actually it’s mostly our dear Master who likes grey. We Bookfayries find grey quite often boring, it’s a kind of broken colour. On the other hand we like how grey enhances prismatic colours next to it. So we have kind of split feelings towards grey.

Grey has the longest colour range of all colours – actually every non-prismatic colour that’s neither white or black – is grey and every time we mix primary colours more than once we produce a grey shadow. So grey is quite a dominant colour.

“As a colour of the achromatic centre it’s soothing. Here you find peace…Orkney’s grey seems to be healing…Grey enhances reflection… This grey symbolises introversion..” What I try (and fail) to explain to those who complain of the grey days here in the Pacific Northwest. When I leave for other areas, there is a sense of loss. uneasiness. These days of August are blue skies and hot…people are all in a good mood except for the few of us who can’t wait for autumn. I did a DNA test and I am about 97% from this region of Scotland and Scandanavia, so I like to think it is in my bones. Someday I will get to visit. Beautiful pictures and splendid writing.

Here I Southern California I see them a lot in certain seasons, especially right now, when I go swimming in the ocean. Thanks, dear Cornelia,
the Orkneys are about 70 islands in the very North of Scotland. One of the oldest European settlements were found there. We have to admit we don’t know if ‘Orcas’ and ‘Orkneys’ are going back to the same root which would be old Germanic or Norse.
You know “Leberwurst” – a funny German word as there is the expression “beleidigte Leberwurst” 😉

Dear Fab Four of Cley,
Once again you show me another piece of the puzzle commonly called Earth. So calmly beautiful in its simplicity and functionality. Being as it has the constant wind, perhaps that is the reason they built the buildings high and close with thin alleys, that also added to the ‘gray’ feeling of the village? No matter – it feels quaint, quiet and yes, reflective.
I so look forward to each new post from you. Have a wonderful and peaceful weekend.

I thank you both for continuing in the description of the Orkneys. Picturing the alleys from a Bookfayrie’s point of view they seem to come from another dimension or time, sort of like “Brigadoon.”
May you never change.

Thank you very much for your concern. Looks like dear Irma wants very much to pay us a visit. Personally I think she’s jealous of Harvey getting so much attention in Texas! Huuricanes seem to have a mind of their, but I will continue to keep track on the weather maps and getting prepared – just in case. Here, us old-timers that have been through quite a few of these gems know enough to hope for the best, but prepare for the worst.
Thank Siri and Selma for asking for their friends’ help. I’ll be thinking of you all if I am (or should I say WHEN) I am forced off the internet!

there is a constant struggle between light and darkness and in the middle of it stands grey. So it was seen during the 18th c. Now we would say that grey is the colour of the conditio humana, the human being between light and darkness.

You lovely bunch, do you know how much I love grey? In my little study I have dark grey walls and dramatic red curtains. The walls are covered by white bookshelves + all my books and I feel so at home here. My desktop gets plenty of light from two windows and I suppose the balance of light and darkness makes it almost cozy and somewhat “gemütlich”.
Wonderful photos and your words go hand in hand with the change of the colour. The closer grey gets to black, the more dramatic and mysterious it becomes. The closer it gets to silver or white, the more illuminating and lively it becomes. Just like you! 🙂

grey is the expression of ballance in the real of colour – like green. And grey is very flexible, it looks not only great with any colour it makes any colour looking great as well. Is grey ‘gemütlich’ – hmmmm, we have to think about it.

So beautifully written, you make the usually drab and dreary sounding ‘grey’ seem quite captivating. Your wonderful photos more than support that, although the splashes of colour on some of them really show up well. It doesn’t surprise me that several authors hail from there. The islands do have a sense of loneliness and solitude about them, so perhaps it’s easy to withdraw to the writing desk and pour out thoughts and imaginings. But I do believe they have several community events on Orkney, some linked to Viking festivals, when they all get together to celebrate. (I could be mistaken here and confusing Orkney with Shetland.} Lovely post, Dina.

Oh yes, they have their communal celebrations there.
I find it hard to imagine living as an author at the end of the world. When I was professionally writing full time, I needed regular contact with my editors, publishers, my PR people and the researches and agents. And then those book signings and lecture tours and all the media stuff. At least I had to be easy reachable.
I can imagine that a hobby-writer – like me now – can enjoy it.
As a writer it helped me a lot to have people around me. They were inspiring. Now as a private person I thoroughly enjoy living at the end of the world.

We love these barren places open to the elements. Especially Dina felt at home, like in Norway. As we love northern Scandinavia and the Arctic it was the right place for us. Next time we want to go in winter as the winter in North Norfolk can’t be called winter. We miss the snow and the ice and nice cold temperatures.
The nourishing element is the ever changing light and the aurora borealis in winter and the snow’s reflection of the moon and star light .

Awesome post. Wonderful photos and a thoughtprovoking narrative. Looking at your images I recall what Churchill once said, “It is often darkest before light.” Is there a word for something between light and dark, as in, it contains qualities of both, I wonder.
LikeLiked by 1 person
Dear John
to my knowledge this saying goes back to the famous travelogue “A Pisgah-Sight Of Palestine And The Confines Thereof” (1650) by Thomas Fuller. He wrote:
“It is always darkest just before the Day dawneth.”
Well, this something between light and darkness is grey – or dawn or dusk which is associated with grey.
In our reality there is never a real white, meaning light only, or black, meaning 100% absorbtion of light. Actually there is grey only, What we use to call white or black is a shade of grey. Light and darkness is an ideal but not a reality, especially not if you look at surface colours. Although Churchill got the Nobelprize in literature for political reason his language was very unprecise or full of clichees. Before light there was a singularity, a situation where dark and light doesn’t apply.
But in the common language between light and darkness there is grey.
All the best

Such enchanting beauty in the Orkneys. It’s interesting about the grey relating to introversion – here in the Pacific Northwest, we also have a lot of grey (actually, gray!). Seattle is called the Emerald City because of all the evergreen trees, but really it’s quite a gray place, too, because there’s so much misty rain. The people are withdrawn – friendly on the surface, but only superficially, just being polite. Cafes are full of isolated individuals working at their computers – yes, that’s everywhere, but more so here, I think. Something about the north, and proximity to water maybe (and we have many Norwegians here too).
Gorgeous photos! I love the light on the water, and the second photo of the street.

Cari saluti Martina

Dear Martina
you wouldn’t believe it, school children have excursions to a little wood on the Orkneys (very little and the only one) to see trees.
Huch, tauchen … Das is a real challenge for him.

Mesmerising photography! Grey gives depth and texture to the photograph never seen before!

Dear Nehal
indeed, grey gives a third dimension to two-dimensional pictures as it lets the prismatic colours come into the foreground by intensifying them.

it does, indeed, and many streets in Stromness do. And there is even an alley called “Khyber Pass”.
In contrast to Stromness one could rather film a horror story in the streets of Kirkwall.
Thanks and cheers

Guten Abend, liebe Maren,

Absolutely stunning and so atmospheric. My father was at Scapa Flow in 1939 for the then King’s review and then between Scapa and Greenland when war broke out. He always commented on the dark brooding weather where dark clouds almost touched the land. Thank you Sally.

Your father was very lucky 🍀 to come out of war alive. The war in the north was extremely deadly. The convoys were under constant fire 🔥.
We were very lucky with the weather, it was grey quite often on the Orkneys with low clouds but hardly any rain ☔️ and in Greenland 🇬🇱 some years ago in September we had sun ☀️ shine only. We know that was untypically.
Thanks 🙏 for your comment.

I saved this to read when I had time! I’m fascinated by this place & Shetland, but have never been to either. My father was involved with the links with Norway in WW2 (& the liberation). I have a fishing trip on Orkney lochs pencilled in for a as-yet-imaginary date! RH

I love the softness of grey colors; so easy on the eyes. I see the water was very choppy, so the winds must have been quite strong. Your words are melodic and soothing… such tranquility in your souls. xo

Hi, dear Trini
the Orkneys are really magical, Norse magic. We liked Stromness very much and all the standing stones and Skara Brae, all megalithic. There is a big Norwegian influence, you would feel at home like Hanne did.

When I see this place(s), I have the feeling that time has stopped there. The contrast between light and dark flows nicely together … and that’s a wonderful combination! I love it! The many shades of gray makes it all colorful. And there is a special atmosphere … The sea looks calm but chilly! Didn’t the Bookfayries find a treasure in the wrecks? 🙂 😉
Have a nice evening and greeting to all of you,
Heidi

Lovely post. The Orkneys do grey very well don’t they?.I spent a grey and wet, although highly enjoyable, month on the islands there back in the late 1970s when I was at university. My undergraduate dissertation was about bronze age sites on the islands. Jackie and I are just back from Lewis and Harris and that was glorious. All the best. Laurence

My daughter has a home on the Orkneys and hopes to retire there. She did try to convince us that it was quite mild but, having spent 45 years in hot climates, we politely agreed to disagree. We did spend 6 months once on the north-east of Scotland, where she now lives in a small fishing village called Rosehearty, but the bitter cold really got to us and we flew south to Lancashire!

We can well understand this if you don’t like the cold. We are Nordic, so we need the cold, at least in winter.
