We are just back from fighting in the supermarket to get to the checkout. The Christmas tree is standing straight and Siri and Selma are over-excited. Unfortunately we have no snow.

  16. It sounds as if you are all ready for Christmas now. We are too – almost. The shops in Norwich are horribly crowded now. I am always amazed by the amount of shopping feel they need to do. Anyway, have a lovely Christmas and New Year and perhaps we will see you sometime in early 2018. Happy Christmas from Laurence and Jackie.

  47. All the very very best of the Holiday Season. I love this time of year and all the memories of friends, family and good times that comes with it. Thank you for adding the joy of friendship. Thinking of you as you sit by your cozy fireplace. We have had snow in Vancouver, which adds to the festive feeling.   52. Such a lovely image of Blickling Hall. We have just returned from seeing the Lost Gardens of Heligan lit up for Christmas. A magical walk through the gardens in the dark. I thank all of you for a series of wonderful, often thought-provoking posts throughout the year. Dina’s superb photography, the Master’s excellent prose (helped by Selma and Siri of course), the delightful way both lovely Bookfayries bring joy to us all through their way of seeing magic in the world that can often be so disappointing. I hope they don’t make themselves sick by eating too many sugar mice, and I hope all of you find time to relax in front of the fire, reading books, painting, dreaming and enjoying life. All the best for 2018

      auch euch gaaaanz toll gemütliche Feiertage❣️
      Wir waren heute Birdwatching, ich musste nämlich bei dem feinen Wetter eines meiner Weihnachtsgeschenke ausprobieren, ein tolles Fernglas. Nun sitzen wir vorm Kamin und suchen das beste bird-app für uns. Übrigens heizen wir auch mit Eichenholz. Jetzt haben wir unseren log shed voll gestapelt mit trockenen Eichenscheiten, die so ruhig mit großer Wärmeabgabe vor sich brennen.
      Im neuen Jahr, gleich zu Beginn im Januar, werden wir zu Dinas Geburtstag noch einmal in Urlaub fahren. Diesmal wird’s nach Cornwall gehen.

  100. Hallihallo, wir haben Weihnachten wieder überlebt! Wir sind nicht geplatzt mit all diesem leckeren Essen im Bauch…wir haben es genossen!
    Supermarkt war gar nicht so voll…wir waren auch nur kurz dort, es gibt noch einen “romantischen” Markt direkt auf dem Schillerplatz vor unserem Haus.
    Apropos Romantik und Schiller: Wir waren im Theater, in Mannheim funktionierte die Sprinkleranlage ganz normal.
    “Der Tod und das Mädchen”, Josi und ich schritten würdevoll gelassen ins Ballett zu Weihnachten. Ein megagenialer Choreograph, der sich jahrelang mit diesem Thema auseinander setzte, zeigt große Kunst!
    Schade, dass nicht alle Menschen tanzen, man kommt echt ins Schwitzen im Körper und die Gehirnhälften werden auch automatisch synchronisiert..
    Man muss es ja nicht professionell zum Hungerlohn und aus reinem Idealismus tun…obwohl es ein interessanter Lebensabschnitt sein kann….
    Eine Frage: Habt ihr noch euren Traumdeutungs-Service? Bin gerade etwas überfordert mit meinen Träumen der letzten Nächte, hui!

    Ich habe die Pflanzen mit den funkelnden Leis unseres grandiosen Christmas-Hula-Luau geschmückt, sieht festlich aus….klasssich in silber-weiß, gold und rot…

    • Guten Tag, liebe Pia,
      es ist ja ganz witzig, an Schiller scheiden sich die Geister, obwohl wir im Deutschen erstaunlich viele Sprichworte Schiller verdanken. Ich halte es mehr mit Goethe. Allerdings war Schiller einer der ersten deutschen Dichter, der Hegel verstand und der junge Sturm-und-Drang-Schiller hatte etwas Revolutionäres, allerdings für meinen Geschmack zu pathetisch wie in “Die Räuber”. Ich war vor Jahren in Hamburg Mitglied eines philosophischen Salons, dort stritten wir uns zwei Sitzungen lang über Schiller.
      Ja, das Traumdeutungsservice mache ich noch.
      Hier wechselt sich gerade wunderschönes Winterwetter mit fiesen graupeligen Schauern ab. Wir machen es uns völlig faul und gemütlich und genießen die hehre Lust des Müßiggangs.
      Dir und deinen Kindern wünschen wir alles Gute zum neuen Jahr, Gesundheit und Frohsinn und natürlich fröhliches Tanzen.

    • Mich hat der Film fasziniert über Schillers Leben. Wenn es stimmt, ist er aus der Kaserne desertiert , um die Premiere seines Stückes “Die Räuber” im Nationaltheater zu sehen. Dazu hat er sich, wenn es stimmt, hier um die Ecke über unserer Bücherei, versteckt…mutig! Alles für die Kunst…
      Darüber denke ich öfters nach…
      Goethe ist unerreichbar in seiner Sprache. Inspiriert und inspirierend…es lohnt sich nicht zu streiten, finde ich, aber da bin ich echt voll langweilig!

      Im Auto auf dem Weg zur Sauna lief in SWR3 ein schönes Lied: Stargazing, Kygo ft Justin Jesso, die Orchester Version mit dem Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra
      Das wäre ein passender Soundtrack zu Dinas tollem Foto!!!

  103. Lieber Klausbernd,
    da gratuliere ich Dir zu Deinem Weihnachtsgeschenk. Ein echt passendes in Eurer Gegend.
    Seit wir die vielen Eichen haben faellen lassen muessen, haben wir auch viel Eichenholz zum Heizen. Es eignet sich aber auch sehr gut zum Raeuchern. Von dem dazu auch sehr brauchbaren Mesquiteholz haben wir leider nur wenig. Mittlerweile ist unser Holz auch schoen durchgetrocknet, obwohl wir es ja draussen lagern. Es brennt also kraeftig. Wenn ich damit grille oder raeuchere. muss ich ganz schoen aufpassen, dass es nicht zu heiss brennt, und ich Holzkohle statt Steak produziere. 😀
    Cornwall steht auch immer noch auf meiner und Marys Wunschliste. Ich hatte schon angefangen, eine Rundreise durch Suedengland zu planen, sozusagen von Kueste zu Kueste, d.h. von Broadstairs bis Lands End. Aber dann hat Mary mich daran erinnert, dass sie auch sehr gerne Irland sehen moechte. Schliesslich ist sie ja halb irischer Abstammung. Und so habe ich dann eine Irlandrundreise geplant, mit einem Abstecher nach Wales. Mal schauen, ob/wann wir dazu kommen. Aber Suedengland ist auch nur aufgeschoben, nicht aufgehoben. Es macht mir riesigen Spass, Reisen zu planen. Da ist die Vorfreude schon richtig gross. Wir muessen allerdings, was die Reisen angeht, auch unser Radeln in den USA mit einplanen. Das hat uns in den letzten beiden Jahren riesig gefallen.
    Euch wuensche ich dann auf Eurer Cornwallreise viel Freude und gute Erholung.

      nach Cornwall kannst du NUR im Winter fahren. Zu anderen Zeiten ist es unerträglich touristisch. Es ist eine tolle raue Landschaft, Kliffs und sehr zerklüftet besonders um Lands End herum, außerdem gibt’s die malerischen mittelalterlichen (und älteren) Zinnminen und standing stones. Hanne-Dina wollte schon immer nach Cornwall, ich war jedoch etwas zögerlich, da ich Cornwall sehr gut kenne. Cornwall im Winter finde ich jedoch toll. Wir planen so um die 10 Tage für die Gegend um Lands End, wir waren ja auch in den Cotswolds für etwa 2 Wochen und das ist feiner Zeitraum, um etwas von Land und Leute mitzubekommen.
      Das Heizen mit Eichenholz bringt echt viel Wärmekalorien und es brennt so ruhig. Mit Grillen haben wir nicht so viel Ahnung. Auch wenn wir ein Grill haben, benutzen wir ihn fast nie. Er staubt in einem unserer garden sheds ein.
      Heute ist es richtig warm geworden, man glaubt es kaum, 10 Grad C. Echt frühlingshaft zumal es die Tage zuvor angenehme Kältegrade knapp unter 0 Grad C hatte.
      Sonst geht alles bei uns so seiner Wege. Das Aufregendste ist, dass wir uns ein neues Auto kaufen. Immerhin haben wir uns nach langem Schauen auf ein Modell festgelegt. Es soll wieder ein Volvo sein, diesmal ein XC60, das 2018 Modell. Eigentlich war ich ja gegen einen SUV, aber der ist so fein ausgestattet, dass Dina und ich wie auch unsere Feen sich sogleich wohl darin fühlten und darauf kommt es ja an.
      Wir senden gaaaaanz liebe Grüße und Feenhauch an euch beiden und wünschen euch ein happy and healthy neues Jahr. Kommt gut rüber

  109. Magical!!! We are still enjoying the beautiful Christmas lights here in Ontario. Many people leave them up for January and even February. We still have our lights and tree up too. It brightens up the cold, dreary nights. Hope you have many happy memories of Christmastime and make more wonderful memories in 2018! 🎄

      We got our Christmas tree and all the decorations down on January 6th. It’s said here if they goblets see any Christmas decorations after January 6 they will break all your pots and pans. Well …
      Our Christmas time was cosy. We were sitting in front of the open fire reading books and ate too much.

      We will go tomorrow to Cornwall for about two weeks. Hanne-Dina wants to take photos of the rough sea there.
      In this house on the picture, Blickling Hall, Anne Boleyn use to live and was visited by Henry VIII. It’s clear Jacobean style and was built in the 17th c.
