The Seven Sisters

We went to the Seven Sisters last year. No, not like hitchhikers through the galaxy to the Pleiades, those seven bright stars which were called “The Seven Sisters” for ages. Even though the Pleiades as most beautiful nymphs are closely related to us Bookfayries they live too far away for a visit. We have to admit, we don’t like at all visiting family and for ecological reasons we don’t go that far, certainly not 444 light years.

Ende vergangenen Jahres fuhren wir vier froh und munter zu den Seven Sisters, nee, nicht per Anhalter durch die Galaxis zu den Plejaden, den sieben Sternen, die seit ewigen Zeiten ‘die Seven Sisters’ genannt werden. Wenn auch die Plejaden als wunderschöne Nymphen mit uns Buchfeen verwandt sind, waren sie uns doch für einen Besuch zu fern. Außerdem lieben wir solche Verwandtenbesuche ganz und gar nicht, und aus ökologischen Gründen fahren wir sowieso nicht mehr so weit, erst recht nicht etwas über 444 Lichtjahre.

Anyway, our dear Dina read that the Seven Sisters, this row of white cliffs between Eastbourne and Seaford, are presenting their visitors the most loved views from all the English National Parks. They are formed of seven hill tops of chalk limestone cliffs which are overformed by the later ice ages. The cliffs are snow-white in contrast to the famous cliffs of Dover. We looked and photographed them on the way from the Cuckmere Inn to Beachy Head, and we enjoyed the thrill of a longer walk at the cliff’s edge the next day. Looking up down from the otherworldly beach they look quite impressive as well.

Wie dem auch sei, unsere liebe Dina las, dass die Seven Sisters, diese Kette von Kreidefelsen in Sussex die beliebteste Ansicht und Aussicht von allen englischen National Parks bieten würden. Es sind sieben Hügel eines eiszeitlich überformten Kreidekliffs, die im Gegensatz zu den viel besungenen Felsen von Dover noch völlig weiß sind. Wir sahen sie am besten, als wir vom Cuckmere Inn nach Beachy Head gingen oder für ein wenig Nervenkitzel am nächsten Tag den Country Park Trail am Cliffrand entlang. Von unten betrachtet, aus einer Anderswelt bei Ebbe, wirken sie ebenfalls beeindruckend.

These dramaticly dropping white cliffs arose in the cretaceous epoch. Quite old with 85 mio. years, from a time when dinosaurs made life dangerous here. This National Park was a small Jurassic Park that is now a popular side for fossil hunters. Unfortunately, our dear Master, although scrutinising extensively the ground, didn’t find anything special.

Stellt euch vor, diese blütenweißen, vom Steilsten abfallenden Felsen stammen aus der Oberkreide. Mit etwa 85 Mio. Jahren sind sie ziemlich betagt, aus einer Zeit stammend als die Saurier die Erde hier unsicher machten. Dieser National Park war also ein kleiner Jurassic Park, der jetzt wie die Jurassic Coast beliebt bei Fossiliensammlern ist. Leider hat Masterchen, obwohl er stieläugig in solchen Gegenden wird, nichts Bemerkenswertes gefunden.

We noticed guards at the cliff’s edge and notice boards to keep people from suicide. The Seven Sisters are one of the most popular places for suicide worldwide. This reminded us again on the Pleiades who committed suicide grieving the death of their beloved brother before they were put into the sky. “Was that here?”, asked our dear Selma.

We have told you before; Dina’s tripod is very heavy so Masterchen carries it most of the time. 

Erschreckend ist, dass wir Aufpasser am Cliffrand herumlaufen sahen und Anschlagetafeln standen dort ebenfalls, die Leute vom Freitod abhalten sollen, denn die Seven Sisters gehören zu einem der beliebtesten Selbsttötungsplätze der Welt. Erstaunlicher Weise erinnert uns das wieder an die Plejaden, die sich aus Gram über den Tod ihres geliebten Bruders Hyas das Leben nahmen, bevor sie in den Himmel befördert wurden. Ob das wohl hier war, fragte uns Selma.

      we will just cut our dear Master hair and then we are off. What a great weather we have!
      We’ll drive careful and it helps that we are used driving on snow and ice and have a four wheel drive. The big question is, will we have the wintery weather we are looking for?

The Stourhead view across the lake to this neo-classic temple is another of the ‘most liked views’ – most liked view of all the English gardens. Funnily enough we visited both place when it was really raining, but we were prepared as we are now too.

    wir wünschen euch einen schönen Urlaub!
    Was für schöne, beeindruckende Kreidefelsen. Wir werden in einiger Zeit Rügen besuchen, dort brechen die Kreidefelsen leider immer mehr ab und es ist zur Zeit gefährlich, unter den Felsen spazieren zu gehen. Leider! Ich bin vor 20 Jahren dort noch überall herumgekrochen. Ob es damals weniger gefährlich war oder ob die Regeln strenger geworden sind? Wer weiß das!

    • Guten Abend, liebe Susanne,
      wir glauben, die Kreidefelsen von Rügen stammen ebenfalls aus der Oberkreide und wurden von den Glazialen überformt. So nehmen wir an, dass die Seven Sisters die gleiche Hangstabilität aufweisen wie die Felsen auf Rügen. Hier lässt man jedoch grundsätzlich die Verantwortung mehr bei den Besuchern. Hinweistafeln informieren über möglichen Steinschlag und instabile Cliffränder, aber es gibt viel weniger Verbote. Über die Deutschen und ihre Verbote macht man sich hier ja oft lustig. Aber wir wissen auch nicht so recht, was berechtigt ist und was nicht.
      Wir sind heute zu einem schönen, altmodischen Hotel im idyllischen Ripon gefahren, wo Masterchen sich gerade in der Badewanne aalte. Morgen nach gediegenem Frühstück geht’s dann weiter gen Norden.

      ja, die Deutschen und ihre Verbote. Ich glaube, die wurden auf Rügen besonders schlimm, nachdem am Kap Arkona ein ich glaube 8 jähriges Mädchen durch Abbruch verschüttet wurde.
      Ich wünsche euch viel Freude im hohen Norden Englands.
      Heute werde ich in die Alte Nationalgalerie von der Uni aus gehen und dort über die Texte Kurt Fiedlers über Marées vor Originalen nachzudenken.

    • Oh dear, liebe Susanne, wir müssen zugeben, wir haben noch nie von Kurt Fiedler gehört. Ja, man wird ja ständig mit seinen Bildungslücken konfrontiert.
      Übrigens an den Seven Sisters kommen auch jährlich einige Leute durch ihren Leichtsinn um. Aber man sieht das als deren Verantwortung an. Man lässt sich ungern hier etwas durch offizielle Autoritäten vorschreiben.

    • Lieber Klausberd, Wir waren inzwischen an den Kreidefelsen in Jasmund auf Rügen und ich war schon entsetzt, wie sehr es sich dort in den letzten 20 Jahren verändert hat. Wo man früher einfach an der Küste laufen konnte, sind nun Zäune am Weg gesetzt. Runter an den Fuß des Kreidefelsens kommst du gar nicht mehr. Am Ufer der Ostsee kannst du nicht mehr laufen, dort sind Bäume umgefallen und nicht weggeräumt und versperren den Weg (ich denke wegen Naturschutz) oder die Steilküste geht gleich in die Ostsee.
      Die Menschen sind halt unvernünftig und hier in Deutschland wird alles so abgeriegelt und „sicher“ gemacht, wie es nur geht.
      Wir haben die liebe Hanne vergessen. Nachträglich alles Gute 🍀 zu ihrem Geburtstag am 24. 🙂 🙂

      Als wir unsere Irlandreise [dieses Jahr im Mai] planten, habe ich im Reisefuehrer von Rick Steves einen schoenen Spruch gefunden. Es ging da um die Cliffs of Moher, die ja auch sehr hoch sind und steil in den Atlantik abfallen. Er meinte dazu, dass dort sehr lange Zeit kein Zaun war, denn “The Irish believe in natural selection”. Darueber muss ich immer noch lachen.

      ich habe mich köstlich über deinen Kommentar amüsiert. So etwas dürfen wir als Deutsche jedoch aufgrund der Geschichte auf keinen Fall sagen.
      Als wir auf Rügen am Kap Arkona am Klippenrand standen, mussten wir an deinen Kommentar denken und sind lieber zwei Schritte nach Hinten getreten.

      wenn wir an einem solchen Steilabhang stehen, dann hat Mary keine Probleme damit, bis ganz vorne zu gehen [sofern der Boden stabil ist]. Mir wird da aber immer ganz mulmig zumute und ich bleibe ziemlich weit zurueck. Bei Gebaeuden ist das seltsamerweise genau umgekehrt. Als wir in Memphis auf der Aussichtsplattform der Pyramide waren, hat es mir gar nichts ausgemacht, bis ans Gelaender zu gehen, waehrend Mary sich nur nahe an der Wand herumgedrueckt hat.

    • Ich habe es gerade gelesen. Es ist ja auch eine Eigenschaft von Kreide: Porösität!
      Das kann ich gleich im Seminar heute anbringen, denn schreibt doch Benjamin über die Porösität Neapels. Kann das auf die Porösität der Kreidefelsen übertragen werden?

      irgendwie hat hier WordPress die Reihenfolge der Kommentare nicht eingehalten.
      Wir sind jetzt wieder zu Hause nach einem wunderbaren Urlaub. Am letzten Tag hatten wir erfreulicher Weise Schnee in den Bergen. Hier in Cley ist es dagegen mild.
      Das ist ja schade, wie sich Rügen verändert hat. Wir sind nie dort gewesen, es stand jedoch auf unserer Besuchsliste. So können wir das wohl streichen.

    • Lieber Klausbernd, vielleicht braucht ihr Rügen nicht streichen, aber die Winterzeit ist schöner. Als wir am Sonntag nach Hause fuhren, kamen uns die Winterurlauber aus Berlin, Brandenburg und Sachsen entgegen. Die Ferien haben begonnen und Rügen beginnt sich zu füllen.

      Ich habe früher auch den Pinsel geschwungen und mich etwas mit Aquarellmalerei beschäftigt. Leider ist das aber völlig von meiner “Lesesucht” verdrängt worden.
      Nun wird erst einmal das Auto gewaschen, dessen Farbe schon lange einem streifigen Braugrau gewichen ist.

    • Ja, ja, die liebe Zeit! Davon haben wir wohl alle zu wenig, lieber Klausbernd, oder? Ich weiss auch nicht so recht, wie ich das Alles unter einen Hut kriegen soll: die Bloggerei, Nachrichten (im Internet) lesen, Buecher lesen, malen, usw. usw. Aber eine Loesung habe ich schon mal: ich wasche kein Auto! 😀

    • Du bist ja ein echter Fußballfan. Ich konnte mich nie für Fußball interessieren, eigentlich interessiert mich überhaupt kein Sport. Naja, als Jugendlicher habe ich mich sehr für Schach interessiert und mit meinem Vater, der als Hobby Rallyes fuhr, ging’s bisweilen zum Nürburgring und auch ‘mal nach Hockenheim.
      Mit der Zeit ist’s bei mir im Winter besser, da ich mich dann wenig um den Garten kümmere, aber dafür kümmere ich mich dann ums Trocknen des Kaminholzes. Aber trotz allem bleibt immer noch genügend Zeit zum Lesen. Mir fällt gerade ein, deinem Fußballgucken entspricht unser wöchentlicher Saunagang.

      irgendwann werden wir wohl dieses Jahr nach Deutschland kommen. Ob wir soweit in den Osten fahren werden, ist jedoch fraglich. Auf jeden Fall müssen wir nach Köln und Bonn und an die holländische Grenze. Berlin liegt leider etwas abseits für uns und Rügen noch mehr. Amsterdam, Brüssel, Köln sind so die Gegenden, die für uns vertraut und leicht erreichbar sind. Aber ‘mal sehen.

    • Lieber Pit,
      ich bin da eher wie Mary, aber das hat sich erst mit dem Alter ergeben. Früher war das nicht so, aber heute gehe ich nur ungern an Kante von hohen Gebäuden, wie immer auch der Rand geschützt ist. Ich las irgendwo, das sei eine normale Entwicklung, die mit dem Alter käme, was bei euch ja augenscheinlich nicht stimmt. Ich nehme zumindest an, dass Mary jünger als du ist. Bei uns zumindest stimmt das. Dina geht kühn an den Rand von Abgründen, wohingegen ich mich vornehm im Hintergrund halte.

    • Lieber Klausbernd,
      ob das mit dem Alter wirklich stimmt? Ich weiss es nicht. Ich erinnere mich noch ganz deutlich an eine Radtour [als ich 14 oder 15 war] in Sueddeustchland, bei der wir auch auf dem Kirchturm [80 Meter hoch] der Abtei Neresheim waren. Da gab es oben einen Rundgang, der mit einem guten Gitter versehen war. Aber trotzdem habe ich mich nur eben aus der Tuere getraut, und bin dann mit dem Ruecken fest an die Wand gepresst stehenbeglieben.
      Und was ich – auch heute noch – empfinde, und vor Allem, wo ich es empfinde, das kann ich Dir nur in einer Email schreiben, nicht aber hier oeffentlich 😀

    • Also ich weiß das auch nicht, lieber Pit.
      Mich erinnert dieser Zug in die Tiefe wie an solchen Kliffs an Freuds Ideen zu Eros und Thanatos. Der Todestrieb ist ja auch als ein Freiheitstrieb zu sehen, die Sehnsucht nach dem endgültigen Loslassen wie beim Orgasmus. Würde diese Höhenangst im Alter stärker hervortreten, könnte man das als zunehmende Gehemmtheit mit dem Alter interpretieren.
      Für meine verehrte Lehranalytikerin Frau Dr. Olga von Ungern-Sternberg habe ich als Jüngling im lockigen Haar über Eros und Thanatos geforscht. Dazu habe ich auch einige Leute befragt. Viele empfinden einen Sog nach unten, wenn sie an Abgründen stehen, berichteten sie mir. Ich habe das damals als das Tertium Comparationis gesehen, nämlich die Erotik oder das Sexuelle, das Eros und Thanatos verbindet. Aus diesem Grunde finde ich es gar nicht so abwegig, dass Leute sich von solchen Kliff stürzen oder in der milderen Form, dass man eine (meist verdrängte) Angst vor dem Sog der Abgründe hat. Dieses Kribbeln der Angstlust wird von der Lustangst des Realitätsprinzips zum Glück überlagert.
      Dies sind meine Idee zu den Gefühlen am Abgrund.

      Wir haben heute den blauen Himmel über Berlin für einen langen Spaziergang im Gesundbrunnen genutzt. Es verändert sich dort monatlich das Straßenbild und es ist immer interessant. Heute habe ich ein paar Knipsbilder gemacht. Es war zu kalt zum Zeichnen. Blauer Himmel und Kälte ist eine Kombination, die ich sehr mag.

    • Liebe Susanne, lieber Micha,
      gerade kommen wir vom Garten herein, wo wir den ganzen Nachmittag gewühlt haben. Auch hier war es sonnig. Vorher habe ich Bücher eingeordnet von einer Bestseller-Autorin, die hier gestern Abend eine Lesung mit Vortrag hielt und uns freundlicher Weise 15 ihrer Bücher signierte und widmete. Aber oh weh, dann gab’s Probleme, die Bücher in unsere bereits vollen Krimiecke unterzubringen. Mit Mühe und Not ging’s. Dann kam noch ein befreundeter Autor aus Cley vorbei, der uns ein Buch signierte und uns von den verschiedenen Arten der Signaturen und Widmungen in Büchern berichtete. Wir waren fürbass erstaunt, was es da so alles gibt und wie es sich auf den Wert eines Buches auswirkt. Vielleicht werden wir demnächst darüber bloggen. Da wir viele Bücher mit unterschiedlichen Arten von Signaturen und Widmungen haben, gibt da auch für Dina etwas zu fotografieren.
      Seit gestern Abend gibt es für morgen orangene Sturmwarnung. Das ist immerhin die letzte Stufe vor der roten Warnung, wo man z.B. draußen weder stehen, noch atmen kann (wenn man mit dem Gesicht zum Wind steht). So haben wir eben auch alles draußen gesichert. Eigentlich finden wir solche Stürme aufregend, naja, wir meinen, sie von innen zu betrachten.

      auch wir haben gestern unseren Balkon gesichtert, für Berlin gab es die rote Sturmwarnung. Sabine tobte über Berlin. Dafür ist über Nacht kaum etwas passiert. Ich denke, alle haben aus der Vergangenheit gelernt und alles besser gesichert, einzig ein Baugerüst in Mitte viel um, zum Glück, ohne jemanden zu verletzen.
      Ich bin gespannt auf euren Beitrag zum Thema Widmung. Stimmt es wirklich, dass persönliche Widmungen wertloser sind als eine einfache Signatur? Ich weiss gar nicht mehr, wo ich das gehört habe.
      Ich freue mich immer wieder an den beiden Büchern, von der Magie der Farben, die ich von dir mit Widmung besitze.
      Heute will ich meine großen Arbeiten fotografieren. Ich möchte eine Broschüre gestalten und gerade für die großen Arbeiten mit dem vielen Weiß sind schwierig. Ich werde die Fotoleuchten aufbauen müssen.

  22. I’ve a feeling that the Seven Sisters are whiter than the Lake District will prove to be. Here in Yorkshire we’ve not seen a snowflake this season, not one. But enjoy your trip, and take photos as wonderful as the ones in this post.

  23. I love your views of the coast at 7 Sisters. I do not know if you are aware that the Belle Tout lighthouse on the top of the cliffs was jacked up and moved 17m back from the edge of the cliff to stop it falling into the sea.

      yes, that was a landscape we like – a kind of minimalistic designer scenery.
      Now we are half way to the Scottish border where we stay overnight. Our car is packed with wooly sweaters and big coats.

    • Also liebe Ulli, wir haben auch den Glauben aufgegeben, dass wir im Norden Englands Schnee finden werden. Nun sind wir in einem traditionellen Hotel im idyllischen Ripley, ehe es dann morgen nach ernst zu nehmendem Frühstück weitergeht. Zumindest brachte heute der Sonnenschein fein winterliches Licht.

  27. Fantastic images, well done. Gosh, I envy you this trip. What a gorgeous location. Did you see the starry sky or was it cloudy? I read The South Downs National Park is one of just 11 places in the world that has been awarded the status of Dark Sky Reserve, in recognition of its isolation from light pollution. It is the second national park in the UK to receive the accolade, after Exmoor National Park. I find this amazing. So close to London and still boasting some of the most beautiful night-time views in the world.

      you are right and I have spent several dark nights in various national parks. The Brecon Beacons and Snowdonia National Park, both in Wales, are also on the list.

      we were lucky and had really starry skies. Fortunately, we have an astronomy programme on our iPhones so we even know what we see. We have quite starry nights at home too as we voted against street lights. We like real dark skies.

  29. Dina has captured those seven hills beautifully, but it does look quite bleak and melancholy with those oppressive grey clouds which make a good contrast to the whiteness. The last shot with the white house is my favourite, what a view! Enjoy the Lake District!

      we loved these clear lines and those clear seperated colour fields in this landscape. It was raining, what we didn’t mind, and the grey clouds added to a certain romantic feeling.

    I can well understand your wish to go north for snow. I have really been missing snow and winter this year. Maybe it’s an affect of having lived in south Florida for 50 years now!!

      We are now half way up North. The weather is great, wintery sun but no snow. Now we stay in a real old fashioned hotel in idyllic Ripley and tomorrow it goes on up North. We do it very relaxed, driving not more than max. 4 hours daily.
      The Seven Sisters hardly ever have any snow. It’s the sea, actually the gulf stream, that makes the climate very winter-mild. But we agree, it would look GREAT.

  36. Wundervoll. Aber man staunt ja, dass es so etwas gibt: die beliebtesten Selbsttötungsplätze der Welt. Ich meine, dass man die Energie hat, einen besonderen Ort für den Tod aufzusuchen, aber keine Energie für das Leben an sich. Das scheint mir so schräg. Menschen sind seltsame Wesen.

      ja, erstaunlicher Weise gibt es eine Art ‘Suicide Platz Hitliste’. Naja, wenn schon sterben, dann mit Stil. Irgendwie können wir das schon nachvollziehen. Das scheint uns besser, als sich z.B. vor einen Zug zu werfen. Wir verspüren ja auch immer so einen Zug nach unten, wenn wir z.B. auf Türmen stehen, obwohl wir uns eher für Frohnaturen halten. Hast du ‘mal von Freud über Eros und Thanatos gelesen? Wie dem auch sei, die Seven Sisters sind ein besonders schöner Ort mit spezieller Naturmagie. Obwohl es regnete – was dort nicht unüblich ist – hat es uns gut gefallen.
      Jetzt sind wir gerade in einem traditionellen Hotel auf unserer Reise in den Norden.

    • Isn’t it a landscape that’s ideal for painting, these clear lines and fields of colour, in a way a minimalistic landscape, uncluttered and kind of real. This inspired Dina to take many photographs there and for a painter like you it would be as inspiring, we suppose.

      Well, Siri 🙂 and 🙂 Selma plan to start a “Renting A Masterchen” agency with special prices for personal tripot-carriers. So they create new fields of work for Sherpas and it’s not that dangerous like in the mountains. We suppose, they will send you their leaflets when they have got their agency working.

    • Our dear Dina and our Master were very successful finding fossils when we went to the Jurassic Coast last year (and besides fossils they found the English translation of Proust’s searchings for the lost time, first edition) . Well, one can’t aways be successful – it is not good for the character 😉

This morning we found fresh cougar prints all around our house. The local deer herd was going crazy, dashing here and there with their tails straight up in the air! –Curt

      you are so lucky to have snow. We are now in the North of England, only the mountain tops were just a little bit white the last two days. On the other hand we are quite lucky not having ice and snow on the roads so we could enjoy two high mountain passes with a 30% gradient and extremely narrow hairpin bends. Our Master loved to drive them, Siri 🙂 and 🙂 were a little frightened and Dina filmed the drive.

    • A 30% gradient! Wow Siri. I once rode my bicycle down from a mountain pass with a 17% grade and used my brakes so hard, I warped my wheels and had to take a day off from my tour to true them. Peggy and I watch the weather closely on the mountain passes around here. Heavy snow and we stay home. 🙂 –Curt

      We had some snow in the English mountains the last two days. It isn’t much but it makes the scenery even more beautiful.
      Wow, you get bears coming to your ground. At ours everything is on a smaller scale, we have quite a lot of pheasants our garden, muntjacks and Chinese Water Deer.

    • Our property backs up to a million acres of national forest land, so there is wildlife galore. We even have a deer heard living on our property. (That’s what the cougar was interested in.) Foxes, raccoons, possums, squirrels, and skunks all live on the property too. The bears, cougars, bobcats, etc are visitors that include the property as part of their territory. 🙂 Thanks. 🙂 –Curt

  42. The muted blues and greens, all seemingly touched with a bit of gray from the sky, are beautiful. There’s something soul-stirring about these images that I suspect would be missing with a bright, blue sky and sunlight. One of the most interesting things about this place, for me, is its geological relationship with a site in western Kansas called Monument Rocks. There, the same chalk-limestone combination can be found, and the wearing away of the seabed has left fantastical shapes filled with fossils. It’s fascinating to be able to see evidence from the same time period in places that are so widely separated.

    On an unrelated note, during research for my latest post I was introduced to the Finnish epic, The Kalevala. You surelym know it, and it’s been fascinating for me to learn about it.

    • Yes, we read the Kalevela when we lived in Finnland a long time ago. Elias Lönnrod was a typical member of the Nordic Romantic Movement. He was interested in language and collected folk tales like the Grimm brothers in Germany. And so he collected all the stories that made the Finnish national epos.
      We find it interesting too how different areas have the same geological origin. Quite often it can be explained with the continental drift. Here in southern England it was much warmer during the Jurassic period. We had coral reefs here like in Kansas around 100 mio years ago.

    einmal mehr zeigt Dina ihr fotografisches Koennen: eine wahrhaft meisterliche Leistung! Ich bin absolut begeistert, insbesondere nachdem ich mir diese Bilder auf unserem grossen Fernsehbildschirm [ca. 150 cm Diagonale und 4k Aufloesung] angesehen habe. Eigentlich sollte ich da staendig eine Diaschau mit Dinas Bildern ablaufen lassen. Uebrigens: auch Mary war ganz begeistert. Ich denke, diese fantastischen Bilder koennten mich wieder zur Aquarellmalerei bringen. Ich hoffe, Dina hat nichts dagegen, wenn ich eines oder mehrere dieser Bilder als Vorlage nehme. Wen etwas Ansehbares daraus wird, schicke ich Euch eins.

    • Ja, prima, lieber Pit 🙂 🙂 wir sind gespannt. Die Seven Sisters sind eine Landschaft, die mit ihrem Minimalismus zum Malen einlädt. Jetzt sind wir in einer Landschaft, die das ganze Gegengeil davon ist, schroffe Berge. Wir sind in einem kleinen Hotel mit Brauerei am Fuße der höchsten Berge Englands und heute fuhren wir über zwei hals- und achsenbrecherischen Pässe mit Steigungen von über 30% und extrem engen Haarnadelkurven. Wir wußten gar nicht, dass es in England so etwas gibt.
      Wir wünschen dir fröhliches Malen.

    • Lieber Klausbernd,
      habe ich es richtig in Erinnerung, dass Ihr im Lake District seid? Der ist mir, was die steilen und kurvigen Strecken angeht, noch in guter Erinnerung, obwohl es nun schon über 30 Jahre her ist, dass ich da war. Drei Mal übrigens. An zwei Strecken erinnere ich mich noch ganz besonders. Bei der Einen ging es zuerst ganz steil bergauf und dann, nach einer kurzen Kuppe, ebenso steil wieder bergab. Wegen der Kuppe konnte an überhaupt nicht sehen, was entgegen kam – und das bei einer einspurigen Straße! Und das andere Mal war, als es steil – das Schild zeigte “1 in 3”, also 33% Gefälle – an, und dazu gab es ein Schild “You have been warned!” Also typischer englisch geht es meiner Meinung nach nicht, oder?
      Und was den Hochgebirgscharakter angeht: es wurde da “oben” immer wieder gewarnt, dass die Berge, obwohl gar nicht so hoch, dennoch alpinen Charakter haben, insbesondere was Wetterumschwünge anbetrifft.
      Der Lake District ist eine Gegend, die ich Mary unbedingt noch zeigen will.

      Mir ist gerade noch ein Beispiel fuer britisches Understatement eingefallen. Frueher, als die Busse in London noch die offenen Plattformen zum Ein- und Aussteigen hatten, gab es da nur den dezenten Hinweis, “Auf- und Abspringen waehrend der Fahrt ist gefaehrlich”. In Deutschland haette das gestanden “verboten”.

  55. These may be the cliffs that make a cameo appearance in my upcoming novel–on the eastern shore of Britain? Great for fossil hunters because the shore keeps chipping away, exposing more of what was left eons ago. Lovely.

      the cliffs are situated at the SE Sussex coast. Another interesting point for a novel is that most of the area around the Seven Sisters is quite run down. The contrast is amazing.
      Yes, you can find fossils there like on all Jurassic places that are eroded by the sea or rivers after the ice ages. But actually that landscape is not that old, only around 90 mio years, time of the dinosaurs. Really old landscapes you find in the Scottish Highlands.

      don’t worry, such a dream has nothing to do with a death-wish. All dream-specialists like Freud, Jung and me 😉 see this kind of dream as a symbol for something new that has to come. You know, the language of dreams is symbolic and not like our everyday language. First of all, there is this kind of desire to fall. That means to let go, to let go restrictions and fears. It’s a strong symbol of freedom. One finds such symbolism quite often in dreams of people who have to learn to let go, to live a more easy life. Second, every dream connotating death is a sign that the dreamers have to finish something that has an unnecessary negative influence of their life. You find this structure of dream often dreamt by people who have a tendency to depressive moods.
      Dear Pete, so don’t worry be happy – actually, this is the message of your dream.

  58. Einmal gab es “Personenschaden” vor dem Zug auf der Rückfahrt vom “Legoland” in Günzburg (Kinder noch klein…). Die Schaffnerin schaute genervt auf die Uhr: “Mist, immer kurz vor Feierabend”. Im Bahnhof in Mannheim traf ich zufällig die Pfarrerin. Es war die Pfarrerin, deren Tochter beim ersten Gottesdienst ihres Vaters auf meinen Schoß krabbelte und fragte: “Weißt du was das ist, der heilige Geist?”
    Am Bahnhof erzählte ich, was wir gerade erlebt hatten. Fragte:” Warum machen Menschen das?”
    Die Pfarrerin: “Es geht schnell.” Ich sagte nix mehr.
    Weiß man warum, wann, wie diese Felswände entstanden sind?
    Die Pelejaden finde ich ganz besondere Sterne.
    Es gibt nicht zufällig noch 2 Felswände mehr um die Ecke?
    Für die liebe Dina wünsche ich Schnee für morgen, Geburtstagsschnee!!!

    • Guten Morgen, liebes Pialein fein,
      ja, man weiß, wie diese sieben weißen Felsen entstanden sind. Das war zu einer Zeit, als dort ein warmes Meer war, als diese Gegend weitaus südlicher lag. Durch die Kontinentaldrift bewegt sich die Gegend im Laufe von etwas unter 100 Mio. Jahren nach Norden. Das Ganze wurde dann vom Eis der Glaziale überformt und danach durch Erosion in der Neuzeit geprägt. Nee, es gibt nicht noch zwei Kliffs um die Ecke.
      Siri 🙂 und 🙂 Selma sind schon gaaaanz aufgeregt wegen Dinas Geburtstag.

      wir hatten eine tolle Zeit in den Bergen. Gestern Nacht kamen wir zurück und nun ist es auch wieder schön zu Hause.

  62. The Seven Sisters is such a beautiful part of the south coast! Dina’s photographs are truly wonderful! The last time we were there was about twenty years ago and I think it’s time for a re-visit. I hope you are all having an enjoyable weekend.

      thanks a lot 🙂 🙂 Yes, we enjoyed not only the weekend but entire last fortnight. We are holidaying in the mountains of the Lake District. We absolutely love it although we were hoping for snow – but in vain. Maybe, we’ll get some in the beginning of the coming week.
      Great that you like Dina’s photography 🙂 🙂 The Seven Sister and Rye are really great but we were shocked about how many of the towns there are really run-down.

      The towns on the south coast have had a really difficult time in recent years and it is very sad for them. There are many reasons for this, as you must know.

  65. Nachtrag zu “echter Fussballfan”: Stimmt, lieber Klausbernd. Das muss ich zugeben. Und ich verfolge nicht nur die Bundesliga, sondern auch die englische Premier League – teilweise jedenfalls. Mein Lieblingsklub das ist der FC Lieverpool, vor Allem wegen des Trainers, Juergen Klopp, der frueher meinen deutschen Lieblingsklub, Borussia Dortmund, trainiert hat, und dem sie zur Zeit in Liverpool die Fuesse kuessen, weil er im vergangenen Jahr die mit Liverpool die Champions League gewonnen hat, und Anfang diesen Jahres die Klub Weltmeisterschaft. Und ich diesem Jahr ist Liverpool die Meisterschaft in der Premier League so gut wie nicht mehr zu nehmen. Also sprach der Fussballfan! 😀
