The Art of Book Signing

Dark winter’s night, new moon. A knock at the door. Shall I grab the long kitchen knife and open the door warily? No murderer there? No one wanting my money for himself or some charity? An author is standing in front of the entrance door. I notice our friend who brings his newest book he signed for us. He explains that he signed with his name only because he was (wrongly) told that personal dedications would reduce the book’s value. His minimalistic way of signing is called `flat signing´. As an example from our library you find here the book of short stories flat signed by Ruth Rendell. We love her short stories. Another example is Dina’s photo-book flat signed by the world famous photographer Steve McCurry.

Es klopft. Dunkel ist der winterliche Neumondabend. Soll ich mit dem langen Küchenmesser bewaffnet die Haustüre vorsichtig öffnen? Kein Mörder dort? Keiner, der unser Geld will, für sich oder irgendeine Wohltätigkeit? Ein Autor steht vor der Tür. Ich erkenne unseren Freund, den wir um sein signiertes Buch baten, das er freudestrahlend überreichen möchte. Dabei erklärt er, dass er nur mit seinem Namen signierte, da persönliche Widmungen, so hörte er, den Wert des Buchs mindern würden. Diese häufigste Art zu signieren wird „flat signing“ genannt; sie besteht einzig aus dem Autorennamen. Als Beispiel haben wir einen von Ruth Rendell signierten Geschichtenband ausgewählt. Gerade ihre Kurzgeschichten finden wir lesenswert. Ein anderes Beispiel ist Dinas Buch des weltberühmten Fotografen Steve McCurry.

Did you know that dated signatures raise the book’s value as more as nearer the date is to the first edition’s date? Like most book lovers, we are rather interested in the personal value and not so much in the financial one. We don’t collect books for selling. We hardly can part from a book. Every book in our collection has an emotional value for us that is especially strong if the book is signed. I visited Brecht’s home many years ago. When nobody was watching I had a look in his books. Nearly all the books were signed and dedicated to him. Fascinated I started to collect signed books as well. We mark signed books with blue markers, yellow markers we use for first editions.

Uns geht es wie den meisten Bücherfreunden weniger um den ökonomischen als um den persönlichen Wert eines Buches. Wir sammeln Bücher, nicht um sie zu verkaufen. Dafür können wir uns zu schlecht von ihnen trennen. Für uns haben Bücher einen emotionalen Wert, der mit der Signatur erhöht wird. Als ich vor vielen Jahren Brechts Wohnung besuchte, schaute ich kühn in seine Bücher. Fast alle waren signiert und ihm gewidmet. Fasziniert beschloss ich, signierte Bücher zu sammeln. In unserem Bücherregalen haben wir signierte Bücher mit blauen Markern gekennzeichnet (Erstausgaben mit gelben).

I signed lots of my books. It changed my signature during book signings into illegible art. Why? With your signature you do the buyer a favour to increase the personal and financial value of the book. By signing you transforms the mass product book to one of a kind. The signature increases even the book’s value when the author died as well as when he gets some reputable prize.   

Über 30 Jahre habe ich Mengen meiner Bücher signiert, in Signierstunden meinen Namen bis zur Unleserlichkeit geschrieben. Warum? Mit der Signatur tue ich dem Käufer den Gefallen, den persönlichen und finanziellen Wert des Buches zu erhöhen. Ein signiertes Buch verwandelt die Massenware Buch in ein Einzelexemplar. Hat man als Sammler das Glück, dass der Autor, der signierte, gestorben ist, erhöht das den Wert des Buches wie auch wenn er besondere Auszeichnungen, am besten den Nobelpreis, bekam.

As author you sign on the title page that’s usually the page before the impressum’s page. This page is tabu for any other person except the author, illustrator, editor and in some cases the translator. But not every author is signing there. We found 2 books in our library that were signed on one of the pages before the title page; these are pages for the ownership signature and gift inscriptions. We are proud to own a copy signed in this way of Karin Hunkel’s book about colours. This book is in this form extremely rare because it had to be withdrawn as a result of litigation. I was lucky that she gave me her book the day it was published. I especially like that she recommends one of my books there. The other book that’s signed in this way was written by my late friend Hajo Banzhaf. He even signed more books than I did. If he always signed on the page for ownership signatures I don’t know.

Das ist die Seite vor dem Impressum, die für jede andere Person außer dem Autor, Illustrator, Herausgeber und bestenfalls noch dem Übersetzer, tabu ist. Allerdings hält sich nicht jeder Autor daran. Unter unseren signierten Exemplaren fanden wir 2 Bücher, die auf der Seite signiert wurden, die für die Geschenksignatur bestimmt ist, die Seite vor der Autorenseite. Ganz stolz sind wir auf dem Besitz des so signierten Buches von Karin Hunkel „Das Arbeitsbuch zur richtigen Farbentscheidung“. Es ist in dieser Form in nur wenigen Exemplaren vorhanden, da es wegen eines Rechtsstreits zurückgezogen wurde. Ich hatte Glück dieses Buch gleich nach dem Erscheinen erhalten zu haben. Dass eins meiner Farbbücher dort empfohlen wird, steigert den Wert des Buchs für mich. Das andere auf der Geschenkseite signierte Buch stammt von meinem verstorbenen Freund Hajo Banzhaf. Er hat sicher noch mehr Bücher als ich in seinem Autorenleben signiert. Ob er die alle auf der Geschenkseite signiert hat?

As more books an author has signed as less the signed copy is worth. Therefore the author A.S. Eglund notes that my signed copy is the 17th from 50 signed copies. Some authors only sign a limited number of books like Hemingway who signed only 510 copies from his second novel “Farewell to Arms“. These copies are much wanted.

Je mehr signierte Bücher von einem Autoren vorliegen, je weniger ist die Signatur Wert. Deswegen notierte der Autor A.S. Eglund, dass mein Exemplar das 17. von 50 signierten Exemplaren ist. Einige Autoren signieren nur eine bestimmte Anzahl von Büchern, wie Hemingway, der nur 510 Bücher von “Farewell to Arms” signierte, was deren Wert enorm steigerte.

Books with the author’s long dedication or inscription thanking a certain person and being signed are rather rare. The author transforms the book into something special that rises the value of it as it is unique now. In our example the author thanks Prof. Bland. This was a random find in an antiquarian book sale. When we are travelling we always have a look in churches and other public bookshelves for signed books. So we found the Greenland-book by Gretel Ehrlich. 


Spannend finden wir Inschriften eines Autors in seinem Buch, die aus einer an eine bestimmte Person gerichteten Notiz mit Unterschrift bestehen. Damit hat Autor das Buch zu etwas Speziellem gemacht. In dem angeführten Beispiel bedankt sich der Autor bei Prof. Bland. Dies ist ein Fund aus einer Kirche gewesen, in der antiquarische Bücher wohlfeil verkauft wurden. Wenn wir über Land fahren, pflegen wir an Kirchen und öffentlichen Bücherschränken zu halten um zu schauen, ob wir signierte Bücher finden.

A signed book by the author is often a souvenir. Bookish people attend readings to get a book signed by their respected author, as we did at Elly Griffith’s talks. Usually the author signs in front of his fans. Some say how they want their book having signed. In Stephen King’s novel “Sara” the author is asked to sign “my best friend”. He does it what I wouldn’t have done it. I had a short look at the buyer and hoped to find an appropriate short sentence I wrote in the book. Was the queue quite long I flat signed my books. Some booksellers ask you to sign beforehand a usually frightening high pile of books he wants to sell the coming days or keep for the Christmas sales for good customers. An author has one of his yearly lecture tours usually just after the world’s biggest bookfair in Frankfurt before the chaos of the Christmas sales.

Ein signiertes Buch ist ein Andenken an den Autor. Leser besuchen Lesungen, um am Ende der Veranstaltung ein Buch von ihrem verehrten Autor gewidmet zu bekommen, wie wir von Elly Griffith. Meist signiert der Autor das Buch angesichts des Käufers, an den man einige Worte richtet. So lieben es die Käufer. Einige sagen, wie sie ihr Buch signiert haben wollen. In Stephen Kings Roman „Sara“ wird der Autor gebeten, mit „Ihr bester Freund“ zu signieren. Er kommt dem nach, ich hätte das nicht getan. Ich schaute mir den Käufer kurz an und schrieb einen hoffentlich passenden Satz ins Buch. Ist die Reihe der Käufer zu lang, signierte ich nur mit dem Namen. In wenigen Buchhandlungen wurde ich gebeten, einen oft erschreckend hohen Stapel Bücher vorab zu signieren. Diese Bücher werden die nächsten Tage verkauft oder für gute Kunden fürs Weihnachtsgeschäft reserviert. Ein Autor geht nämlich auf eine seiner jährlichen Lesereisen im Herbst nach der Frankfurter Buchmesse, also kurz vor dem Weihnachtsgeschäft.


Books get specially signed for close friends. One example is Ottmar Alt’s book with his signature and a little drawing and one of my books I gave Dina. For friends I always had some colour pencils for signing.


Außerhalb von Vorträgen, Lesungen oder Signierstunden signiert man Bücher speziell für Freunde. Ein Beispiel dafür ist das Buch von Otmar Alt mit Signatur und kleiner Zeichnung und mein Buch, das ich Dina schenkte. Für Freunde hielt ich zum Signieren stets Farbstifte bereit.

    • Dear Pete,
      you seem to be right, in the first 5 hours we got more than 125 likes. Actually, it’s not only about books but also how an alienated mass product can be transformed into something singular. But for us and especially for our beloved Bookfayries it’s mainly about books. Indeed, bloggers like to read and look at photos and they want to be individual and special otherwise they wouldn’t blog. So this is a interesting topic for our visitors. On the other hand, post about literature only get less likes than post about travelling f.e. We noticed that posts about literature get a little under 300 likes and other post get always more than 300 likes. But, of course, now one has to write we are not interested getting many likes 😉
      As you mentioned photographs, Dina has a little collection of signed photographs.
      Here the weather started really great this morning but now it’s raining. The right weather for blogging.

      most writers like our dear Master get lots of signed books from their colleagues and so they start collecting signed books, other do it for the sentimental aspect as you write.

      a signed book with a kiss – GREAT!
      Well, my publishers and agents organised these lecture tours and book signings that are hard work. Butt that makes your books sell. One lecture tour of roughly 3 months sells about 6000 books and afterwards the bookseller knows you and will recommend your books. Together with these lecture tours you have to appear in the media. Usually your publisher or agent organises that you appear around noon in the local TV or radio and in the evening you talk. In morning interviews at breakfast in the hotel afterwards you fly to the next city.

    • I can see that you have quite another regard for books than myself. And that is you opinion. No doubt shared by many, but not by me. What lies in such a signature? That you happened to see the author when you once visited the book store? So you have seen him/her in person, but then what?
      I don’t get it! But I respect those that do! 🙂

      we got lots of signed books and first editions. Our dear Master as an author gets lots of signed books from his colleagues who hope that he will quote them in his books or write a preface for them or mention them in the media. As you say, we are keen of getting personal message written in a book.

  8. Our local independent bookshop often organises events at which authors speak and consequently I have quite a few signed books. I like these particularly, as I feel I ‘know’ the writer a bit and have at least had a short conversation.

      we love it as well. When we meet other authors, we are not only asking them for a signature but also have a small talk, preferably not a smalltalk. The author becomes more real and not only a name on the book cover.

    Yes, I have many, if not all of your books signed in this manner, Klausbernd. They are very special to me. I would think, a dedication copy is perhaps the most highly sought after of all signed books—and often the most valuable—as there is only one of these books in existence for any particular title. Your presentation of various forms of book signing is informative, highly entertaining and as always beautifully framed with Hanne’s photos.

    What are you reading at the moment? I have just finished reading “Shantaram” and I find it hard to look for something to replace it so I’ll grab something from my pile of non-fictions to be read to start with.

      I agree with you that the signed book dedicated to you is of high value to you. If it is no longer in your possession, will it be valuable to someone else when it’s dedicated to you? I think this was the point the point the author knocking on the door was trying to make, it’s something often discussed, also at my institute; What’s better, signed or inscribed?
      To verify a signature and inscription’s authenticity, scholars will study numerous other handwriting samples from the author. As a result, some may argue that a signature plus an inscription is more valuable than just a isolated signature because it allows for more comparison to other samples to ensure its authenticity. This is especially true for the signatures of those who have passed away.
      Others maintain that a signed-only book is worth more than say an inscribed copy signed on an author’s book tour “To Aaron, With warmest regards, Stephen King”. Why? Because if anyone other than “Aaron,” takes possession of that book, it becomes much less personal and an almost throw-away inscription. Mind you, I’d appreciate a copy like that from Stephen King. 😉

      GREAT having nearly all books signed in your collection. Please, let me know which books of mine in your library are not signed. I will sign them with a dedication and send them to Svalbard. They will love travelling to the High Arctic 😉
      I have just finished “Knife” by Jo Nesbø. A book with a sophisticated plot, well written suspense with little philosophical insertions. As non-fiction I read “wanderlust – A History of Walking” by Rebecca Solnit. This is a philosophical book, not as I expected it. I learn a lot about the Romantic poets and their philosophy but also about J.J. Rosseau and about the current problem that sponsoring hiking is teaching people to respect nature but on the other hand it is increasing tourism that destroys nature. You know that from Svalbard. A very interesting book. Last week I read a German book “Die Erfindung des Nordens” (The invention of the North) by Bernd Brunner. Quite philosophical as well and well researched.
      After “Shantaram” it’s hard to find some other book that is gripping. Try “Fog Island” by the Swedish author Mariette Lindstein.

    • Good morning, dear Annalena,
      we think, a book with a dedication is aways very special and makes the book kind of more individual than a flat signed book. I know it from my tours through bookshops all over Europe that you flat sign a lot of books just for the bookshop without any personal contact to the buyer. Flat signed means mostly that the buyers haven’t had any contact to the author. If I get a book with a dedication to another person I don’t mind at all. It shows that this book was not only touched by the author but there was a personal contact, it isn’t an alienated commodity any more.
      I have always signed with a dedication and do it still. How do you sign your books?

  12. Interesting post! \!There was a time when I thought a signed book is a signed book. Then I proudly presented a signed book to a friend and had to learn it was signed with an autopen and therefore do not carry value. No value at all? It was a blow. I suppose lots of politicians/presidents/famous people use an auto-pen. Do you know any authors who use this mechanical arm-like feature?

      yes, we know some authors using a rubber stamp or auto-pen for signing like Erich von Däniken f.e. That’s true that such a signature reduces the value of the book. If you want to sell a signed book the dealer or buyer is checking first if the book’s signature is real or not.

  13. What an interesting post. I don’t have any signed books, or first editions, and that’s OK, it is what they have written in the book that is important to me. I think if I knew the author personally it would be nice to have a signed copy though.

    • Dear Fraggle,
      a first edition of a modern book that was a seller is nothing special. Nowadays, first editions of books of best-selling authors like Stephen King, Jo Nesbø, Dan Brown and Ken Follett are that high that they aren’t something special. It doesn’t matter if you own a first, second or twentieth edition. First edition are only special if the first edition was a low print run (say not more than 3000 copies).

  14. Ein sehr spannendes Thema, Bernd.

    Ich besitze nur wenige signierte Bücher, das wertvollste ist mir von Viktor Kortschnoi, dem schachvizeweltmeister. Den sprach ich über seine Frau an.
    Über antiquarische Buchhandlungen besitze ich noch einzelne signierte Bücher.
    CDs lassen wir uns gerne nach Konzerten signieren. Meist sind diese Musiker ausgefeilte Könner und da tut es gut, von ihnen eine Signatur zu bekommen. Nik bärtsch etwa fügt noch eine kleine Zeichnung hinzu.
    Selbst habe ich noch kein Buch verfasst.
    Aber letztes Jahr (ich war bundesligaspieler) wollte jemand auf einem Turnier eine Unterschrift von mir auf einem scoresheet.Da war ich ganz unvorbereitet.
    Ein bisschen abseits vom thema:
    Ich mache neuerdings einen Stern und ein Plus in jedes gelesene Buch, evtl noch das Ablaufdatum dazu. Stern steht für den Beginn des Lesens, das plus für das Ende. Zudem verfasse ich jetzt auch eine kurzübersicht des gelesenen in einer worddatei.

    • Lieber Gerhard,
      das finden wir eine gute Idee, in einem Buch zu verzeichnen, wann wir es begannen zu lesen und wann es ausgelesen war und eine Kurzübersicht als Word-Datei über das Buch zu erstellen. Wir sind da weitaus konventioneller, wir schreiben per Hand mit unserem Lieblingsfüller eine Art Kurzrezension über jedes gelesene Buch, verzeichnen aber nur, wann wir es ausgelesen haben. Dafür verzeichnen wir jedoch in einer Word-Datei alle signierten Bücher und alle Erstauflagen, die in unserem Bücherschrank an den blauen und gelben Markern zu erkennen sind.
      Eine Signatur von Viktor Kortschnoi hätten wir auch gerne. Toll!
      Und nun sind wir ja völlig verblüfft, dass du Bundesligaspieler warst. Völlig unerwartet. Was ist denn ein scoresheet?

    • Scoresheet: eine ergebnismeldung bei einem Turnier. Der junge Mann nahm ein solches blankoformular und erbat eine Unterschrift darauf.

      Das mit meiner sportlichen Vergangenheit im Schach erwähnte ich nur, weil es erklären hilft, wieso er eine Unterschrift wollte.
      Ansonsten ist es Schnee aus der Vergangenheit 😀

      das mit deiner Vergangenheit ist doch schön! Darauf kannst du stolz sein. Unser Masterchen liebte es auch Schach zu spielen. Aber er hat viele Jahre nicht mehr gespielt, obwohl das der einzige Sport war, für den er sich begeisterte.

    • Ich war nie gut in Sport oder sportbegeistert, aber ich habe jahrzehntelang Yoga praktiziert, war auch in einem indischen Yoga-Ashram. Heute praktiziere ich Pilates. Eine körperliche Betätigung, die mir liegt, sind auch lange Spaziergänge.

    • Ich spaziere mit Dina und Siri 🙂 & 🙂 Selma um die ästhetischen Reize der Natur zu genießen und ein wenig deren Geologie zu studieren und evtl. um Fossilien zu sammeln – aber vor allem, um mit Dina Orte zu erwandern, wo sie fotografieren kann.
      Wie bist du denn auf die Fotografie von Insekten gekommen? Ich finde das sehr wichtig, dass du uns diese aussterbenden Tierchen nahebringst.

      Nun: Ich hatte nun dieses Makro, fotografierte Blüten und Strukturen im Wald.
      Im Frühjahr 2017 fotografierte ich in 2x 700 Fotos verbranntes Holz im Wald. Das war ein Erweckungserlebnis.

      im Herbst 2017 versuchte ich mich an Insekten, Bienen, Wespen, Falter. War zunächst nicht sehr erfolgreich damit, aber der Ehrgeiz hatte mich gepackt, diese Tiere präziser darstellen zu können. Lies einfach nicht locker.

      Dann kam das Sammeln hinzu, die verschiedenen Arten kenenzulernen.
      Was mich auch motivierte, war die versteckte Schönheit der Tiere. Kaum einer weiß, wie schön Insekten sein können.

      Im Laufe der Zeit lernte ich auch einiges über die Klassifikation dieser Tiere und ihr Verhalten sowie einige Futterpflanzen.

      Die Vielfalt der Insekten ist eindeutig beschädigt. Meist nur “gemeine” Arten gibt es noch zu fotografieren. Ob ich diesen Frühling neue Insekten kennenlernen werde, ist also nicht sicher.

    • Wir finden das sehr aufschlussreich, lieber Gerhard, wie du uns die Insekten zeigst. Keine Ahnung hatten wir zuvor von den Insekten, wussten nicht um ihre Schönheit, nur davon dass sie vom Aussterben bedroht sind. Habe vielen Dank.

    • Dear Dick,
      indeed, if you sign too many books your signature is counterproductive. Therefore your editor tells you when to stop signing a book f.e. after the first lecture tour after the book was published or after about 50 talks in bookshops.
      Of course, one have to see the emotional value and the financial value. Even if somebody signed nearly all his books that doesn’t diminish the emotional value of the book. On the other hand we go for rarities and so we would actually prefer to have an unsigned book of Heath.

  16. My father, who died in 2001, wrote one book, which appeared in 1949. Every once in a while I look online to see if any seller of used books has a copy for sale. At the moment there is one at

    The seller cites the inscription in that copy: “To our friends Angie & / Evelyn Aluzzo, with / the best wishes for / success in all en / devours. / Jack Schwartzman”. I was four years old at the time, and don’t know who those people were. Given the passage of time, I’ll probably never find out. Did they keep the book until their deaths, or did they give it away earlier? So many unanswerable questions….

    • Dear Steve,
      we had a look at abe-books. It is a first edition and there wasn’t big print runs in 1949 (the price shows it as well). We suppose, your father gave this copy to friends but usually you don’t sign with first and second name for friends (or did you in the States?) or he signed after a lecture. Most of the lectures in those times were organised just after the book was edited. The publisher is in NYC. If Angie and Evelyn Aluzzo lived in NYC at 1949 they would have got the book there, if not they are most likely friends of your father. But it’s nearly impossible to find out if they kept the book until their death or gave it away earlier. Well, you could ask abe-books where this book comes from.

    • The $150 the bookseller is asking seems far too high a price. Yes, the book is a first edition, but it’s also the only edition there ever was. Over the past decade or two my sister and I have bought several copies at much lower prices. We also still have the copies our father gave each of us in childhood.

      It’s true that many times an author who’s inscribing a book includes only the first name of friends, but it doesn’t strike me as strange to include a last name as well.

    • Your father’s book could only be sold for $150 if you will find a serious collector. If a book is rare but not so many people left who are interested either in the topic or in the author you will never get such a price for it.

  17. Dear Fab Four of Cley,
    I have a number of books signed, but one book, “Ambulance No. 10” by Leslie Buswell, is not only signed beneath his picture, but has a note to his friends in the front and notes on the pull-out in the back. I have yet to find a book dealer or collector who can estimate its value. It’s good to know that the personal notes does not hinder the value, as one day in my later years all of my library will have to be sold.

    • Dear GP Cox,
      first of all it is important if it is a first edition and how high the print was. The first edition was 1916 and these editions are sold between £ 10.- and more the £ 350.-. It seems to be that there are several first editions around with different dust jackets (strange). That’s the bookseller’s price. You would get a little under half of it. Much better is finding a collector. We suppose under those visitors of your website you will find some collectors of books like this.
      As a signet copy with a note to his friends it’s worth more at least for a collector. If the book is in mint condition and a first edition, a collector would be willing to pay at least $ 100 to $ 150 for this copy – but that’s an educated guess only. A bookseller would give you under $ 30 for it, we suppose. But we are only guessing.
      We suppose your library is full of books about WWII in the south-east Pacific. For an collector it’s often more interesting to buy the whole collection. A big collection of books of a certain topic is usually worth more than all the single books – or get the rarest books out to sell those individually and try to sell the rest as a collection.
      May we ask you, why do you think your library has to be sold in later years?

      I came from a rather small family and it turns out I am now the last of our bloodline. My better half has no interest in keeping them after I’m gone, plus isn’t in the best of physical health. I am hoping that I can get everything arranged before anything major happens. My father’s scrapbook and items I’ve collected, thanks to my readers, etc, I have started to list and will be donated to the National WWII Museum in New Orleans. (They are aware and have sent me a list of what I should get done for the legacy. The books I have for the 11th Airborne will go with that as well.).

      I am in the same situation as you are. I am the last the in the bloodline except my sister. She is not really interested in our books, only in the books about art. Dina’s family is not bookish and so we will donate our library to a public library in the UK. We haven’t decided which one yet. As we have quite some rare book about explorers and exploration we think of donating those books to the Scott Research Institut in Cambridge – although we have first editions in mint condition of Amundsen’s and Nansen’s books 😉
      The other books we will probably donate another author. We know that our books would like being there 😉
      We think donating something like a big library to a public library or institution always is the best.
      But Dina is younger than I am so she will enjoy our library first when I am gone although I don’t feel at all like going. Being realistic if I would live twenty more years I would be really blessed.

  19. Klausbernd. Here is another example for your list of inscriptions. The American regional poet Richard Shelton taught poetry at the University of Arizona. He was gifted with a set of rubber stamps with terms of derision such as “trivial” to be used in grading students’ work. At the end of our class he signed our student copies of his work, with one of the stamps. He did not use the stamps on our work, not that they didn’t apply.

  20. Love it! My favorite signed books are ones made out to me by the author or illustrator that I know — and I’ve been blessed to know a handful. In one, an illustrator drew a little fork to represent a dinner we shared. It’s priceless. 🙂

    • Indeed, these are the author’s or illustrator’s signings of a book we love. It makes it to `our book´, very special with specific memories.

      Most of our books are signed by authors we know and some by authors we don’t know. But these books signed by authors we know or even are friends of ours we love most.

      GREAT reading from you again. We are very well and hope the same for you. Since October, we have been all the time holidaying on and off. That is finished now, well, not entirely we have to go to Germany for a week, but then we stay at our cosy home. Enough holidays.

    • Ja, das stimmt. Meine Leserschaft ist ein überschaubarer Kreis. Es gibt für mein Unterseeisches Blogdasein mehrere Gründe: zum einen dieser Datenschutzkram. Ich bin eine Techniktrotteline und stieg durch dieses Kleingedruckte nicht durch. Dann meine Texte. Einige davon möchte ich vielleicht mal veröffentlichen. Wenn ich sie einem kleinen Leserkreis lesbar mache, sind sie nicht öffentlich einsehbar. Einige der Gedichte gehören zu Anthologieprojekten. Dann fühle ich mich in diesem kleineren Leserkreis wohler, besuche ihre Blogs. Im Moment ist es still in meinem bloghäuschen, mein Leben bricht grad ohne Rapport um. Neuorientierung auf vielen Ebenen. Es wäre mir ein Vergnügen, Dich, Selma und Siri bei mir begrüßen zu dürfen und hoffe, ich konnte es erklären.

  23. I love coming to your place – I always learn something new that allows me to reflect upon my thoughts on a specific topic. I agree – once you have a book in your library it is meant to stay in your library. The idea of signing a book is reminiscent of having a book given to me that has the notes and highlights of the giver. As I read, those markings give me a sense of a conversation that has taken place, and will continue to take place. While some may think that it devalues a book, I believe that it enhances my reading experience. As always, my dear dear friends, the Fab Four of Cley, I’m sending my love and many hugs across the pond.

      the Austrian writer and painter Oskar Kokoschka said `books are insulted when given away.´
      Well, the value of a book is usually quite subjective and a theoretical problem only. If a modern book is not from a very special small edition it’s usually worth nothing financially seen. Books are a poor financial investment. But books are a perfect emotional investment, so to speak. A signed book will make you remember the author and produce a special connection to her or him and, as you write, it enhances your reading experience. We love our signed copies – and even signed copies we found in a car boot sale.

  25. This is so interesting. I did not know certain ways of signing made a book more or less valuable. I have some signed books, and they usually mean an occasion of some sort or that I actually know the author. A few are from those piles the poor authors have to sign!

  26. I love attending Author Events where the author speaks for a while and then autographs books. We just had Erik Larson here in Knoxville this week, and I had him sign his new book The Splendid and the Vile about Winston Churchill. But then I asked if I could have my picture taken with him. He said, “Yes!” He’s the third author who has posed with me, and I think I’m going to continue to collect not only signatures but also pictures. Authors, to me, are very special people!

  27. That was so interesting! Prints are the same in that the less copies there are, the more they’re worth. I also feel the same about books: I don’t want to get rid of any of mine, but I’ve had to do so since we’re going to move. I still have more than enough, though. I do enjoy the Ruth Galloway series by Elly Griffiths.

  28. As an illustrator long ago, I often helped with book signings.. The most embarrassing moment for me was when someone requested my autograph – and I had not seen that person in 20 or more years. I scribbled, ‘Ed, thank you for your continued support of my work….’ and when I handed it back to him he scanned the text and stated, “Lisa. I’m Chester.” (Ed’s younger brother!) Chester had put on about 30 or more pounds, and he looked just like his ‘older’ brother… Graciously he smiled and said, ‘That’s Ok. I’ll give this one to Ed. Let’s do another for me..”

    • Oh dear, I know these situations very well. Signing sometimes for an hour after a talk you are prone to mistakes. I always was afraid of spelling mistakes in the dedication. That goes back to one of my first book signings. I was so excited that I made a spelling mistake which made me horribly embarrassed. Using the wrong name is a classic as well as spelling the name wrongly. Actually, like in your case people who want a dedication usually don’t mind.

    • Yes; now – even if signing an art poster – I pause and state, “Please spell your name for me so that I do not make a mistake!’ It also helps avoid another Ed/Chester moment! Even if the name is “Mary’ perhaps they spell it, “Mari’ —

      I was surprised that one of your readers did not appreciate the bonus of a signed book/inscription. To me it adds so much – gives it more of a soul, and even years later one can reconnect to that moment – or wonder about the exchange between author and reader.

    • Yes, we were surprised as well. We can hardly imagine that someone doesn’t like and wants signed copies.
      Actually, I did the same in later years, always asked people to spell their name for me (and I was sometimes amazed about certain spellings).

    Nette Nachbarn, die gute Bücher mit Unterschrift verschenken wollen, finde ich voll ok.
    Die Ballettmuttis in meiner Schule sind jetzt soweit!
    Wir werden einen wundervollen Ort zum Verweilen und Lesen, für Vorträge und Meditation, Kochen und Kreativkurse einrichten, solange wir noch da sind und es uns möglich sein wird: “Delphina Soul Care”

    • Liebes Pialein fein,
      die Etymologie von `signatur´ ist bekannt. Das Wort ist eine spätlateinische Bildung, die auf `signum´ (Hochlatein), was so viel wie kennzeichnen heißt, zurückgeht. Die Endung lautet -atur(a) und keineswegs -natur(a), das n kommt vom Wort signum. Also mit Natur hat die Signatur sprachlich rein gar nichts zu tun.
      Ja, da sind wir doch platt, da stehen ein tanzender Bär, Adler, Elefant und Tigerkatze in Tutus vor der Türe und werden von der Sonne beschienen. Wahrscheinlich sind die neugierig auf die Bücher, die wir heute bekommen haben: eine Erstauflage – eine feine kleine Erstauflage von einem speziellen Drucker – von einem Mann, der wir kennen und von dem wir weder wussten, dass er einen dicken Roman geschrieben hat, noch dass Robert Graves sein Großonkel war. Leider ist diese ungelesene Ausgabe nicht signiert. “Aber schade auch!”, rufen Siri 🙂 und 🙂 Selma wie aus einem Munde aus. Dann bekamen wir noch eine vollständige 12bändige Ausgabe der Werke von Arthur Ransom von 1946, der mit “Swallows and Amazons” weltberühmt wurde. Dazu gab’s noch die Biografie der Affenmutter Baroness Jane van Lawick-Goodall, die allerdings mächtig vom Bücherwurm angefressen ist. Das sieht ganz lustig aus, wie unsere Buchfeen meinen, und ist auch heute eher ungewöhnlich. Das Buch ist erst einmal in Quarantäne gekommen. Unser Problem war jedoch, dass wir kein Zimmer ohne Bücher haben und dieser Nagekäfer leicht ausfliegen und andere Bücher befallen kann. Vielleicht wollten Bär, Adler, Elefant und Katze mit den fliegenden Nagekäfern spielen, wer weiß. Ihn zu verspeisen, wäre besser!
      Wir finden ja den Titel “Sprungbrett zur Kreativität” voll doof, aber mein Lektor hatte den sich ausgedacht und war geradezu in ihn verliebt. Ich konnte ihn nicht davon abbringen. Umgekehrt ging es dann mit meinem Buch “Traumhafte Lösungen”, ich fand den Titel genial und verteidigte ihn mit Erfolg gegen einen skeptischen Verleger, der später erst einsah, wie gut der Titel ist.

      das Buch kommt nicht in die Stuga, da diese Käfer, die fälschlich Würmer genannt werden, alles annagen, was holzig ist. Unsere lieben Buchfeen und ich meinen jedoch, dass die Bücherwürmer schon vor Zeiten ausgewandert sind. Wir werden das genauestens betrachten.

    • Der Lektor konnte nicht ahnen, wie genial der Titel “Traumhafte Lösungen” war, das ist ihm vielleicht erst später eingeleuchtet….klar.
      Jonas fängt mit seinem Papa und Freunden bald viele Fische in Kornhamn, so ist der Plan.
      War dort gerade virtuell, das ist ja unglaublich schön!!! Wollte schauen wie weit Oslo und Umgebung davon entfernt liegen. Geografie hasste ich in der Schule regelrecht, allein schon den schweren Atlas mitschleppen fand ich super doof…
      Im Nachhinein denke ich, es war einfach zu theoretisch als Schulfach, öde!
      Norwegen möchte ich wirklich gerne mal besuchen! Das Odenwaldhäuschen gehört gestrichen, mal sehen welche Farben es verträgt…

    • Ach so, und das Buch traf natürlich bei euch ein, weil ich letzte Woche andauernd Deia googelte….
      Hatte (und habe noch etwas) Bindehautentzündung und Lesestopp, manche Bücher sind dermaßen klein geschrieben, anstrengend…und auch so komprimiert inhaltlich, nicht leicht, aber ich bleibe am Ball…
      Habe die richtigen Tropfen von Weleda und tatsächlich sehe ich klarer, auch ohne Brille!!!
      Das war wohl eine Heilungskrise…

    • Oh, wie schade, liebe Pia,
      ich habe Geografie geliebt und Geowissenschaften als Fach zusammen mit meinen anderen Fächern studiert. Besonders liebte ich die Exkursionen. Wir fuhren ins arktische Skandinavien, um den glazialen Formenschatz zu bewundern, sammelten Fossilien am Albrand und studierten Karstlandschaften in den Yorkshire Dales. Das waren auch lustige Ausflüge und mich hat das alles interessiert. Aber ich kann das verstehen, einen schweren Atlas zur Schule zu schleppen ist keine Freude. Wir benötigen auch immer verstärkte Regale für die Aufbewahrung unserer Atlanten. Gute Atlanten sind Ungetüme!

      Korsham ist ja ein Mini-Dorf am Ende der Welt in Süd-Norwegen, das u.a. vom Angler-Tourismus lebt. Wir sind nie dort gewesen. Auf Bilder sieht es typisch norwegisch aus.
      Übrigens zu wissen, wo welcher Ort liegt, ist ja nicht richtig Geografie. Ich beschäftige mich immer wieder mit der Entdeckungsgeschichte, das ist ein Teil der Geografie, den ich echt spannend finde. Aus diesem Bereich stammen auch die meisten unserer signierten Bücher und Erstauflagen.

    • Wenn ich wirklich etwas mit d e n Wegeners zu tun habe, verwundert es ja nicht, dass das Herumsitzen und Auswendiglernen von Mittelgebirgszügen nicht so geprickelt hat damals…
      Klar, handsignierte Bücher und Erstausgaben sind sehr wertvoll. Man weiß ja auch nie, was im Nachdruck geändert, gefälscht, verdorben, weggelassen, hinzugefügt wird….
      Hajos Gesicht kam mir irgendwie bekannt vor damals, viele Monde her, Barbara G. Walkers Tarotbuch fand ich auch sehr spannend.
      Eine Frau auf Djerba, die viel in Indien war, wollte unbedingt die Karten legen für mich. Die Kinder waren 3 und 5 Jahre alt. Da sagte ich: Es ist noch zu früh. Sie: Es ist nie zu früh. Doch, finde ich.
      Wollte ja gesund werden bzw. bleiben. War nicht ernsthaft krank, etwas verwirrt vielleicht…uninformiert.
      Am Strand von Djerba lief immer “The Bonny Swans” in der Strandbar, das merkte ich mir, wie so vieles…ob nötig oder unnötig…jetzt bügele ich mal weiter.

    • Naja, liebe Pia, Alfred Wegener war ein großer Geist. Seine Theorie der Kontinentaldrift war damals revolutionär. Er hat völlig jenseits der herrschenden wissenschaftlichen Meinungen gedacht. Heute ist das weltweit reputabelste Meeresforschungsinstitut in Bremerhaven nach ihm benannt, kurz AWI.
      Hajos plötzlicher und unerwarteter Tod ist nun bereits einige Jahre her. Er benutzte Tarot wie C.G. Jung als Anstoß zur Assoziation. Wir beide studierten nicht nur damals zusammen Jungs Gedanken, sondern hatten uns beide auch Jungsche Analytiker gesucht. Wir folgten der gleichen Tradition, der auch Barbara Walker verbunden war. Ich habe allerdings nie etwas über Tarot geschrieben oder es gar für Beratungen benutzt. Für mich war die Symbolik der Karten wichtig. Komisch letztes Jahr versuchte ich meine Sammlung von vielen hundert Tarot-Decks zu verkaufen, was mir jedoch leider nicht gelang. Tarot ist etwas out.

    • @liebe Dina: Habe Desinfektionsmittel, viele Flaschen, wir tanzen einfach weiter. Eine türkische Frau bringt ihre Tochter nicht wegen der vielen italienischen Kinder in der Ballettgruppe. Leider kann ich jetzt nicht den “Schneckenblues” auf der Didacta singen, vorerst nicht, verschoben.
      Ansonsten kommen alle zum Tanzen und fragen an der Tür: Sind bei dir noch Normale oder sind hier auch alle hysterisch oder verrückt geworden?
      Zinksulfat, Magnesiumcitrat, Selen, Schwefel, Vitamin D3, Zeolith, Glutathion, frisches Vitamin C, Freude, Angst (Enge) weg…Herz und Verstand einschalten, durch die Hose atmen, Energie und Bewusstsein…Leben war schon immer lebensgefährlich oder?
      Die reale Gefahr und eventuelle Agenda dahinter kann ich nicht einschätzen.
      Seit mein Vater starb, denke ich: jeder stirbt für sich allein.
      Jeder Tag des Lebens ist auch schon ein Tag des Sterbens.
      Solange merkwürdige Dinge in meinem Leben passieren, z.B. landete eine Ausgabe des “Sterns”, den meine Tante Iris offensichtlich abonniert hat, zufällig in meinem Briefkasten.
      “Das Geheimnis der Menschheit, was Forscher heute über unseren Ursprung wissen”, ich hatte erst kürzlich Zeit, diese Ausgabe zu studieren. Meine Tante wohnt neuerdingst in der Schillerstraße und ich Schillerplatz, kann man als Briefträger schon mal verwechseln…
      Da wurde mir klar wie wichtig es ist, aus welchen Quellen man seine geistige Nahrung bezieht, sein Brainfood.
      Eine Ballett-Mutti-Ärztin gestand kürzlich: Ernährung kam in meinem Studium nicht vor.
      Sie stöbert auch oft in den merkwürdigen Büchern, die es in meinem Aufenthaltsbereich gibt. Am Anfang war es schwer für sie….

      Ich danke euch so herzlich, was hätte ich nur getan ohne die fab4s!!!???

      nachdem Masterchen Kaminholz ins Wohnzimmer brachte und den Kamin ausräumte, werden wir gleich über Land zu einem Vortrag von einem klugen Gartendesigner fahren. Unterwegs werden wir wohl bei allen Kirchen anhalten und nach Büchern schauen. Wie wir uns kennen, werden wir fündig werden.
      Nach den Sprung in die Kreativität landet man im 7. Himmel, wenn das Ergebnis von der Allgemeinheit angenommen wird. Wenn nicht, muss man einfach erneut springen. Immer dran bleiben, einmal klapp’s bestimmt – naja, es sei denn, man ist ein Spinner ohne jeglichen Realitätsbezug.

    • Hallihallo, liebes Pialein,
      nee, wir sind doch nicht in China, nix Feng Shui in unserem Garten, sondern Gärtnervernunft gepaart mit (hoffentlich) guten Geschmack. Allerdings hörten wir gerade gestern einen Vortrag über die Geschichte der Prinzipien der Gartengestaltung. Goethe hat sich in seinem Roman “Die Wahlverwandtschaften” dazu geäußert und natürlich kann man viele Tipps bei Fürst Pückler finden.
      Was in Deutschland die öffentlichen Bücherschränke sind, sind hier die Kirchen, wo man seine ausgelesenen, geerbten und nicht mehr geliebten Bücher abgibt. Von Pornografie bis wissenschaftlichen Büchern findet man dort alles, jedoch meistens moderne Krimis und relativ viel Fantasie, eben was die Leute so lesen.
      Wahrscheinlich kann man nicht ohne einen sprachlichen Code denken, zumindest nicht systematisch denken. Neueste Forschungen gehen davon aus, dass Denken mit Ordnung zusammenhängt und wo es Ordnungsstrukturen gibt, können wir von einem sprachlichen Code reden.
      Früher schrieb man in Deutschland die 1 auch ohne den Haken oben, mein Großvater tat das z.B. noch. Das kommt vom Lateinischen I für 1.
      Unterschriften sagen nur bedingt etwas über den Schreiber aus wie auch die Handschrift, meine ich. Man unterschreibt ja auch unterschiedlich. Wenn man z.B. jeden Tag über 100x Bücher signiert, ist das nicht die normale Unterschrift, die man hat. Eine Unterschrift ist nicht so leicht imitierbar, wie man denken mag. Bei signierten Büchern, falls die Signatur von einem berühmten Autor stammt, wird die Signatur für gewöhnlich genau geprüft und man findet Fälschungen normaler Weise heraus, durch Analyse des Drucks, Schwung etc.
      Oh dear, so viele Fragen. Woher sollen wir das alles wissen? Zum Glück passen Siri 🙂 und 🙂 Selma gut in der Feenschule auf und wissen so Einiges.
      Wir haben heute über 500 knatschgelbe Narzissen in unserem Garten gepflanzt, die wir in einem Gebiet ausgraben durften, das nur heimische Pflanzen aufweisen soll.

    • Wir bauen weder Kartoffeln noch Gemüse an außer Tomaten und Süßkartoffeln, die man eh nicht mehr wegbekommt, wenn man sie einmal hatte. Bei Nutzpflanzen haben wir uns völlig auf Kräuter verlegt. Unseren Kräutergarten lieben wir sehr.

    Herzlichen Dank für die Erwähnung meines Buches mit Signatur und persönlichen Worten. Ich freue mich sehr, dass mein Buch in eurer Sammlung weilt.
    Ich habe drei Bücher von dir in meiner Sammlung, Klausbernd, zwei davon Signiert. 🙂 Das dritte habe ich im Antiquariat gefunden und es war, als ob ich dir durch dein Buch persönlich begegne.
    Ich schreibe heute aus München, seit Donnerstag bin ich hier und habe schon in der graphischen Sammlung im Studiensaal knapp 10 Skizzenbücher aus dem 19. Jahrhundert betrachten dürfen. Ein genialer Einblick. Außerdem werden gerade in einer Ausstellung die Radierungen von Max Klinger gezeigt.
    Nach dem Kunstgenuss bleibt morgen noch Zeit, mit meinem Sohn, der zur Zeit in München lebt, an der Isar spazieren zu gehen.

      das freut und ehrt mich, dass du drei Bücher von mir hast 🙂 🙂
      Das war doch klar, dass wir dein Buch erwähnen und zeigen. Es hat sogar einen Ehrenplatz in unserer Kunstbuchsammlung.
      Ich war regelmäßig in München, da meine drei Verlage damals Hugendubel, Gräfe und Unzer und Integral alle in München sitzen. Außerdem hielt ich 3 – 4 mal jährlich in der Psychologischen Fachbuchhandlung Vorträge, die dort immer bestens besucht waren. Wenn ich in München war, wohnte ich stets beim Hajo. Wir unternahmen viel in der Stadt und Umgebung, dennoch ist und war München nicht so meine Stadt. Ich bin eben Hamburg-Fan.
      Dann genieße deine Zeit in München fein.

    • Ja, das geht mir auch so, Klausbernd, obwohl mein Sohn mir München näher bringt. Besonders ein langer Spaziergang am Tierpark vorbei die Isar entlang hat mir sehr gut gefallen. Es ist als ob ein Stück der Alpen in Form des Flusses in die Stadt geholt wurde. Als Berlinerin empfinde ich München sehr teuer aber ich glaube, gegen Berlin ist jede Stadt teuer.

    • Wir waren immer angenehm überrascht, wie preisgünstig fast alles in Berlin ist. Wir kennen sonst noch Hamburg als deutsche Stadt ganz gut. Das ist dagegen sündhaft teuer.
      Hanne-Dina ist zurück aus Norwegen. Mit ihrer Mutter ist so immer das Gleiche. Es ist gut, dass sich deren Zustand nicht verschlechtert. Zum Glück gibt’s da noch 2 jüngere Brüder, die unweit der Mutter wohnen und sich um sie kümmern.

  32. What an interesting subject; I have learnt such a lot from this post – thank you! I must look through my books to see if any of my second-hand ones have been signed. I have only two (I think) books bought new, with a signature. One is a history of Pakenham Watermill and the other is a paperback copy of ‘Stig of the Dump’ by Clive King. King visited Halesworth bookshop some years ago and provided the signed books.
    Yet another windy weekend! I hope you are sitting cosily by your fire this evening.

      We suppose, most people get their signed books at events with the author. Finding signed books in a second hand book sale, in churches or car boot sales is quite rare but there is always a chance. In bookshops those books are often overpriced.
      We keep or fingers crossed that you will find signed books among your collection.

  33. This post was so helpful to me! When my book was published I was anxious about signing, as I don’t have an artistic flourish. But something seems to flow in the heat of the moment, although I doubt that my signature is identical from one book to the another.
    A while back I wrote a blog post on my project to trace the previous owners of a set of Dickens through marrying up the inscriptions.       Well, it is always said that your author’s signature in a book should be readable. Mine was guessable only 😉 but it helps to do something that it can be recognised that it was you, the author, who has signed.

    • Well, I can boast my signature is legible. It just fades away at the end, as if I forgot what I set out to do.
      I came across a very interesting story about Dickens and the illustrations just a few weeks ago. Probably well known to most people, but new to me.
      If you have a look at his prologue in this version of Pickwick Papers, you will see he is quite defensive about the work being his original idea and nothing to do with the illustrator. . . . do you know the background? I did a little research which am happy to offer. But maybe you already know the story better than me 🙂
      And how curious you have the same edition as me!!! The antiquarian bookseller gave me a ballpark value which decided me to repair the spines, but he has several other collections worth more than 10,000 pounds. I’m not selling anyway. I hope to pass mine on to a grandchild. There is one who might be capable of reading and valuing the collection.

      here this Dickens edition is not worth that much because there are too many still around.
      We don’t know this Dickens story, well, we are not so familiar with his work to know background stories. Our field of collecting and expertise is nordic literature – especially Norwegian and Swedish but Icelandic, Finnish and Danish as well. We would like to read this story!

  34. I had never heard of the German artist Otmar Alt before. His colourful sculptures and paintings are wonderful. I‘m impressed with his vita and your connection to him.
    Since I moved house last year I live without my big book collection, collected over many, so many dedicated years. The books all have good new homes, that makes it easier. I have left the concrete of the big city and live in a tiny little house in the middle of nature in Telemark. It was a big decision, the best I ever did. Please come and see when you tour Norway.

      Otmar Alt is one of the very successful German artists who works in industrial design as well and runs a foundation sponsoring young artists. Our dear Master used to write his speeches. Therefore we have some pictures of him as well. Well, his vita has its dramatic side. We like him and Siri 🙂 and 🙂 Selma loved to go around in his privat zoo.
      We would very much like to go to Telemark visiting you there. For such a trip we have to start saving immediately as Norway is so horribly expensive.

    • Dear Hjerter,
      I decided not writing another book. The problem is that writing a book is only one side of the coin but to make it sell the other. That means those horrible lecture tours away from home for months, flying to boring TV appearance and talk shows etc. I love being retired and caring for our house and garden and having a great time. I asked myself why should I write another book? For reasons of vanity? But I have still to learn to let go the idea that I have to achieve something. Deep in my heart I know I haven’t.
      Yes, I was asked by one of my publishers to write a new book about symbolism after I was interviewed that often last year (fortunately mostly radio and magazines, so I could do these interviews from home. I turned down all the TV inquiries).
      Anyway, no more new books! And that feels really good.

    • Guten Tag, liebe Claudia,
      klar doch, signierte oder gar gewidmete Bücher sind schon etwas Besonderes. Wir finden zudem Bücher spannend, in den ein bekannter Mensch oder gar kluger Menschen Anmerkungen an den Rand geschrieben und etwas unterstrichen oder anderweitig markiert hat. Wir waren vor langer Zeit mit einer Frau befreundet gewesen, die Bücher von Habermas, Adorno und anderen der Frankfurter Schule besaß, die von diesen Superklugen beim Lesen unterstrichen und teilweise mit leider unleserliche Anmerkungen versehen waren. Das finden wir das Alleredelste. Übrigens macht Masterchen das auch beim Lesen. Er kann gar nicht ohne angespitzten Bleistift zur Hand lesen. Es gibt einige Buchfetischisten, bei denen ist das völlig verpönt. Wir müssen zugeben, dass bei besonders schönen Büchern – schön gesetzt, bes. Papier etc. – er wenn, dann nur mit Lineal und einem sehr weichem Bleistift anstreicht.

  36. My signed books are more children’s books as I worked in a Primary school and got children’s author’s in. They always signed for me and I do treasure these books. I can understand your feeling for these books, they are precious.

      we met Elly just recently here in Cley. It was the first day her new book “The Lantern Man” was for sale. All her books are placed in the area where we are living. She lived here for many years as well. It’s always special if you know all the places where a novel is set.

  38. OMG! You looked into Brecht’s library? I am green with envy.
    Made me remember when people had libraries, I would always look at the books of people I met.
    The books told me more about their owner than 2 hours of conversation.
    I sigh as I write this from my library. I often wonder what will happen to my books.
    I told my daughters that whatever books they don’t keep after I’m gone should be donated to the French Lycée
    in Mexico.

      I wrote my thesis about Brecht’s late poems (Buckower Elegien) and was one of the main speakers at the Brecht-Congress at the McGill University. So I got the chance to see Brecht’s private library.
      As you, we all four have the first look at the books there when being invited. Siri 🙂 and 🙂 Selma are totally un-inhibited, they just open interesting books checking the impressum for the edition and looking for signatures.
      Siri 🙂 and 🙂 Selma will take over our library but that means that they have to stay in our house because moving with more than 11.000 books is a nightmare and you need a bigger house for the shelving space for so many books. But we love living surrounded by our books.

    • Congrats again on Brecht. I need to go back to reading him. I did, a bit, a very long time ago. Don’t really recall anything.
      I support Siri and Selma, books are made to be opened… and read.
      Now 11,000 books? Compliments again. I have moved around a bit, so my current count is at 3,000. Which was a nightmare when we moved house a few years back. And now, having all the books in one space, the “Library”, I have a limit with shelves. New books will take the space of old books. I donate to the French Lycée.

    • Once in a while I read Brecht’s poems again and when a theatre is showing one of his plays we all four are there.
      All these books keep us in our house, but fortunately we don’t want to move anyway.

  39. A very interesting post, I learned much about the art of signing book! And yes, I have signed book, most of them are photography or visual art related. I’m not interested in the added economic value but the signature helps me to remember the moment I met the author.

      We have some signed photography books as well but mostly signed books of authors writing fiction.

    • Danke, lieber Pit. So echten Buchsammlern wie uns hüpft ja das Herz vor Freude, wenn sie signierte oder erste Auflagen bekommen. Das ist die Irrationalität des Sammelns oder wie es Freud gesehen hätte, eines der Symptome der Analfixierung 😉
      Hier haben wir auch wieder einen wunderschönen Tag, so dass wir gleich in den Nachbarort wandern und vielleicht noch beginnen werden, unseren Rasen zu mähen.

    • Hm?! Anafixierung?! Ihr werdet Euch doch nicht damit den *** abwischen? So wie es ein Kavallerist in “Dances with Wolves” mit eienm wunderschoenen Skizzen-/Tagebuch gemacht hat?!
      Viel Spass auf Euren Spaziergang. Wir werden nachher vielleicht bei unserer Lieblings-Galerie hier vorbeischauen. Heute ist naemlich First Friday Art Walk, und da gibt es hier in den Kusntgalerien immer etwas Besonderes.

    • Guten Morgen, lieber Pit,
      Masterchen mäht den Rasen gerne und der (beide Rasen & Masterchen) sieht jetzt soooo toll aus. Wir finden das besonders imponierend, wenn man deutlich die Bahnen sieht, in die gemäht wurde. Zum Glück ist es jetzt, wie bestellt, kälter geworden. Wenn wir uns recht erinnern, wächst der Rasen bei Temperaturen unter 15 Grad C nicht mehr. Hurrah, wir haben 6 Grad C, was sowieso viel zu warm für die Jahreszeit ist. Wir fahren heute über Land zu einem Vortrag von einem Spezialisten über Gartengestaltung. Da geht’s gleich los. Siri 🙂 und 🙂 Selma sind soooo lieb! Sie haben für uns ein leckeres Picknick bereitet.
      Und … weißt du was? … an jeder Kirche, an die wir vorbeifahren, halten wir Ausschau nach Büchern. So ich uns kenne, werden wir fündig werden.

    • Also wenn der Master sooo gerne Rasen maeht, dann kann er gerne hier rueber kommen und unseren maehen. Wird wohl bald noetig werden. Heute Morgen habe ich gesehen, dass unsere Mexican Plums im Vorgarten und der Redbud hinter dem Haus schon die ersten zarten Blueten tragen. Sobald wir einen sonnigen Tag haben, werde ich mit der Fotoapparaten draussen sein.

  41. You have gotten some really cool signings in your collections. Strangely as it may seem, despite the fact that I am a book lover – and collector – I have never gotten into book signing. Like you point out, it’s nor about monetary value for me neither.

      we have to admit we are quite proud of our collection of signed books. But most of the books in our collection are not signed – unfortunately.
      We can’t imagine to sell our library or even one of our books. They are like children for us 😉
      We suppose, you collect books about photography.

    • We are collecting nordic and nautical literature especially polar research, medieval literature and novels written in German, English and Norwegian, and last not least books about books. And Dina collects books about photography as well.

    Habe ziemlich alle Erklärungs-Theorien der momentanen Zustände durch und werde mich, da, oh je, schon wieder Ferien, mit intensivem Aufräumen beschäftigen.

    • Guten Abend, liebe Pia,
      wir waren die letzten Tage auch mit Aufräumen und Ordnen zugange. Bei uns geht’s ja oft um unsere Bücher. Wir bekamen wieder 5 Kisten geschenkt und die mussten gesichtet, geordnet und aufgenommen werden, die mit Widmung und Erstauflagen herausgezogen und dann alles fein eingeordnet werden. Wir finden das ein tolles Gefühl, wenn alles übersichtlich und anmutig untergebracht ist. Dafür gibt’s auch gleich einen Drink. Bei einigen Büchern haben wir vier gerätselt, ob das nun die Widmung des Autors ist oder das ein Freund/eine Freundin der Vorbesitzerin geschrieben hat. So völlig unleserliche Signaturen haben wir selten gesehen. Manchmal wusste die Vorbesitzerin die Antwort, manches Mal haben Siri 🙂 und 🙂 Selma einfach geraten.
      Hier haben wir wunderbarstes Frühlingswetter; ja, wir erfreuen uns an Vöglein und unserem Garten und unsere Bibliothek next the Sea 🙂 🙂
      Auch dir viel Freude, genieße die Ferien und wenn’s aufgeräumt ist.

    • Dr. Bircher über die Grippe mit schönem Namen…naja, mit Abstand der angenehmste Vortrag zum Thema für mein Empfinden. Ich mag den, 2mal pro Woche heiß baden finde ich genial!
      Der Muesli Man…
      (muss gleich mal BAP hören, Das Lied “Müsli-Man”, empfehle BAP live aus dem Jahre 1982, die Zeit in der wir alle Kölsch sprachen bzw sangen…
      Ich wurde beim BAP Konzert in der Eberthalle vor vielen Jahren fast zerquetscht, da waren auch schon einige völlig Gestörte in der Halle…)

    • Liebe Pia,
      ja, diesen Dr. Bircher habe ich als Kind zur Genüge kennengelernt. Ich musste morgens stets Bircher-Benner-Müesli essen, um Gewicht zuzunehmen. Nach einer Weile hasste ich das.
      2x wöchentlich heiß baden, hört sich gut an. Wir haben da unsere Sauna und hinterher wird auch noch fein gebadet. Auch wir lieben es zu baden.
      BAP haben wir auch einmal vor längerer Zeit gehört.

  43. Thank you for sharing some of your treasures – and the secrets of signing! I must admit I don’t have many books signed by the author, but always sign the books I give away (accompanied by some suitable words for the person I am giving it to). I do have one interesting book though – on the Ecuadorian stray dog, Arthur, who adopted his master doing a cross country sport and accompanied him the whole tough journey. The adopted master, Mikael Lindnord, could not leave his friend when he went back to Sweden, but went back to take Arthur to Sweden. The competition through Ecuador was filmed, and Arthur’s story became a book. I met him in Malmoe on one of his lectures, Mikaels’, that is, and could pat and say hello to this impressive and majestic dog of his. He wore his name with pride. The book – Mikael signed it and put a stamp with Arthur’s paw on the same page.
    To make a long story short, my heart always beats a little extra when I open that book. So, signing really means a lot. Your library and your signed books is a treasure.

      what a great story 🙂 Thanks a lot for sharing. Indeed, that is very special to have this book signed like this. We can well imagine that this opens your heart.
      We have so many signed books as we exchanged signed books with other authors – but a book with a paw we don’t have. That is VERY special.
      Here in our village it’s very quiet as most of our neighbours are over 70 and it’s recommended that they self-isolate themselves. Well, our dear Master is in that age-group as well but he has his daily walk with us. There isn’t anybody around who could infect him. In our next post we will mention how people help each other and that they don’t travel unnecessary. So it has its good aspects too. Here in country out in the sticks, we are not that threatened because we don’t have public transport here or meet other situations where many people come together in a closed space. We as most of our neighbours get our provision delivered for years now. We don’t feel that frightened, but we can’t be sure if that’s an illusion.
      Stay healthy, you and your family.

    • I am so glad to hear you are as safe as possible. We try to follow all precautions, but, we do shopping for food. Walk the dogs in the forest – no people there. In this little village, we are not reached yet by the virus – as far as we know. My husband is 69 and has got KOL, so he must watch out.
      I just read that the canals in Venice is now turning blue and the water is being seen through. And the fish is returning. I have been thinking – Mother Nature is giving us this very timely. She has difficulties in breathing, her lungs are infected. Now we get Covid19 affecting our human lungs. There is a meaning. Stay well all of you. ♥♥♥♥

      So glad to have brought you the story of the paw. I find it uplifting.

      it’s like in the “Hitchhiker’s Guide to Galaxy” in the end it’s the nature (in form of the mice) who rules our world. Frank Schätzing comes to a similar idea in his book “The Swarm” and in his theoretical book about nature “Nachrichten aus einem unbekannten Universum” (unfortunately it’s neither translated in English nor in Swedish to our knowledge). The eco-crime story “The Schwarm” is translated into Swedish by Frederik Sjögren (Bazar, Stockholm 207, ISBN 978-91-7028-063-4). We all 4 loved to read it.

      Schätzing’s “The Swarm” (original “Der Schwarm”) is really worth reading. We found it great suspense and well written. Actually, the basic idea goes back to Lovelock’s Gaia-Theory that he already published in the 70th. Schätzing’s trade mark is his meticulously well research.

      auch fuer uns ist es absolut unverstaendlich, dass Sanders noch nicht aufgibt. Aber wie ich schon sagte: ich halte ihn fuer einen selbstbezogenen Sturkopf.
      Ja, wir gehoeren auch zu den “White Old Men” – aber wir wollen ja auch nicht Praesident der USA werden. 😀 Biden und Sanders zeigen genau das Problem der Demokraten hier: sie haben versaeumt, ueber Jahrzehnte hinweg, junge Leute in fuehrende politische Positionen zu bringen. Zum Teil ist daran auch die Tatsache schuld, das viele Bundesstaaten hier fest in republikanischer Hand sind, dass junge Demokraten sich also dort nicht profilieren koennen. Somit fehlt der politisch erfahrene Hachwuchs.

      das war ja in Deutschland in der CDU ebenfalls so, dass über Jahrzehnte die Alten den Jungen keine Chance gaben.
      Also Präsident der USA zu werden fände ich das Allerletzte. Es ist wohl der sicherste Weg, sein Leben zu versauen.
      Wie der kluge Brecht schon riet, halte dich unauffällig und von Helden und der Macht fern. Allerdings, ich geb’s ja zu, mit der Einstellung ändert man politisch auch nichts. Naja, ich tat meinen Anteil wärend der Studentenbewegung und im Uni-Parlament.
