A Winter’s Day in Norfolk

At last, after long, long waiting winter arrived at our Norfolk coast. Jack Frost hadn’t forgotten us. One blog after the other presented beautiful winter pictures. We envied Ann-Christine, Maren and Hanna, and all the others for their fine snow. As you see it was worth envying them 😉
This is Siri 🙂 and 🙂 Selma writing. We just came in. Our dear Dina told us we have to unthaw first. Nonsense! We are little polar explorers, at least we feel like them. We don’t care about the prickling feelings in our faces. It’s so great walking on snow that nobody else has walked on. It makes us believe we’re special. That’s mini-exploring, isn’t it?

It’s our dear Master you see in the first two pictures. In the snow, we only see the back of him. He is storming ahead through the snow as if he is about to conquer the North Pole. Actually, we think he walks that fast because otherwise, he gets too cold. Who wants to appreciate the beauty of snow has to be able to stand the cold. Well, this is only a matter of clothing. We are fascinated that those snowflakes are one of nature’s most fragile things, but just look at what they can do when they stick together. They can sink ships like the unsinkable “Titanic”.

Klausbernd Outwhitedon a walk in Cley

We found this quote by John Ruskin: “Sunshine is delicious, rain is refreshing, wind braces us up, snow is exhilarating; there is really no such thing as bad weather, only different kinds of good weather. ” This could be from us. We weatherproof Bookfayries absolutely agree.

The color of springtime is in the flowers; the color of winter is in the imagination. Terri Guillemets

Oh dear, now we have to look after the fire in our fireplace as Dina and our Master are staring mindlessly at their screens.
When we were small fairies we ever so often looked out of the window to make sure that it hadn’t stopped snowing. We would welcome some more snow now so that everything looks even more enchanted.

A local Blackbird braving the cold.

Together with Dina, we read Otto von Münchow‘s inspiring book “Develop Your Creative Vision;Pphotographically seeing – See Better, See Deeper”. Dina is fire and flame now to find the unconventional or unusual and is not any more concerned about photographing sunsets, boats and flowers. We, the poor Bookfayries, have to help her look for the unusual now. With the picture above our dear Dina failed miserably. When we had a look at the social media this morning we saw at least five similar pictures.

We wish you a beautiful winter with glittering snow that’s crunching when you tread on it.

  1. Siri & Selma,
So nice to hear from you and your feeling on the snow. I’ve told many bloggers that I miss snow – some understand, some think I’ve lost whatever marbles I once had! lol, Klausbernd looks as though the weather hasn’t slowed him down any – that’s always good to see.

  2. Wonderful photos of a snowy Norfolk. It is some years since we had such a ‘real’ winter here. As long as I don’t have to drive too far in it, I don’t mind it too much.
And Ollie thrives in the cold! He much prefers it to being too hot, and loves to drink the icy water from part-frozen ponds.
Love from beetley, pete and ollie. X

    • Good afternoon, dear Pete,
we love living here but it’s a pity that we don’t have real winters here every year. That the only thing we miss. Like Ollie, we thrive in the cold and in the snow – but we don’t drink the water from the part frozen ponds 😉
With lots of love from the coast where the snow is already leaving us again.

  3. Minus 21C here this morning – Ruskin is right, there’s no bad weather, this is perfect for freezing extra vegetables on the windowsill. I like your “Klausbernd Outwhited” shot, it reminded me of watching a movie on a very old video tape, with the characters sometimes vanishing into the static. I’m glad you’re enjoying the beautiful winter, it always does seem magical to find yourself in a world where the water has turned crystalline.

    • Dear Robert,
we always like temperatures below minus 20C. Then the air is so clear enhancing colours and shapes and you start to see optical illusions.
We have to admit we know the real whiteout from the literature only. We can imagine how you will panic in a real whiteout. When Dina took this picture we had a heavy snowfall that we could hardly see further than 2 meters in front of us.

  4. Well Fab Four, you have clearly been inspired by Mother Nature as this post will long remain among my favorites ever. It NEARLY makes me wish for a winter storm but not quite 😊. I can remember many times during my life in the northeastern US being totally immersed in the beauty of a fresh snowfall but of course afterwards I had to brave the icy roads to get to work and the magic disappeared. I was completely enchanted by the photography this week, which contrary to Siri and Selma’s opinion is absolutely beautiful and quite different from any others I’ve seen. I hope you enjoy the pristine white beauty and the exhilaration of the cold for as long as it lasts. Here we have rain and clouds and I find myself refreshed by the beauty of your post. Happy valentine’s day to you all ❤️

We remember this great winters when living in Vermont and even in Montreal. We loved them. Here it’s a kind of smaller winter, much less snow and much warmer. Nevertheless, we got a little taste of winter and thoroughly enjoyed it. We were a lot outside, walked for hours but unfortunately it wasn’t the right snow for building a snowman. The weather forecast predicts the end of winter in the coming week. That was short!
      Wishing you a happy valentine’s too ❤ ❤

  5. A really lovely post and beautiful pictures too! Just to add to Ruskin’s remark, there’s no such thing as bad weather just poor clothing! Mind you I won’t be venturing out today, like yesterday, as the wind would blow us over! Unfortunately, we don’t have any lead to put in our boots! Enjoy your snow whilst it lasts; here in NI the snow lasted all of a couple of hours! 🤣

    • Dear Ashley,
you are so right about the clothing.
We had beautiful winter weather for the last four days. Snow and not too cold, just around minus 2 to 3 degrees in the day, the right condition for long walks. On and off we had heavy snowfalls. But the end of the winter is already forecasted for next week. That was a short winter but we thoroughly enjoyed it. What a pity that you have such a wind.

  8. Snow is something I haven’t enjoyed for a while. I moved away from snow country in 1993 and would visit the snow on my terms to ski. We are now expecting four inches here in Austin Texas so once again I can feel one with our chilly friend. I loved the photos and especially that of Klausbernd walking away. (I think your gloves are too fashionable for the cold, Klausbernd) Best wishes to the Fab Four, and thanks to Siri and Selma for the update. 😁

  9. Snow in North Norfolk, my dear friends! Well, of course you are more than delighted with his visit; I hope Jack Frost appreciates the warm welcome and decides to stay longer than the weather forecast might tell you, dear Siri and Selma. You have to practice your fairy magic a little bit longer.

Love the high-key photos! There’s obviously so much keen photographers can do to create fresh and amazing photographs. I’m glad you enjoyed Otto’s book and got new ideas, Dina-Hanne. To see better, deeper and more than before sounds like a good exercise to break all rules and overcome the conventional. Have fun venturing out, all four of you.

  12. Dear friends, this post immediately put a BIG smile on my face. I’m so happy for you being able to celebrate the joys of winter. It’s probably more fun to have a snowy winter for just a few days than months of icy roads in the countryside and frozen paths in the woods, freezing cold rooms, heating not working properly and so fort. What didn’t work too well during your short winter? Did you get your groceries delivered, bins emptied, oil/gas fills? 😉
I love the winter, but my favourite time of the year is spring when the birds start to chirp again, the ice melts and the first blossom is just around the corner. Bye-bye boots, welcome normal shoes again! 🙂
Thank you for cheerful post, Siri and Selma. Love the photos and Dina-Hanne’s new approach. To see Masterchen in front of you almost racing along is indeed unconventional!

Siri 🙂 and 🙂 Selma are watching when we are shopping that we reduce our waste. Actually, that was all that didn’t work. 13. Dear Siri and Selma,

Serendipity and your fairy dust have bestowed magic on our side of the world. Yesterday, at long last, Vancouver received a snowfall, at the same time that your snow came to visit Norfolk. I was beyond excited to hear the crunch of our boots as we walked along a nature path close to home. I took out my book of poetry and read, Snowflakes by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, which was recently introduced to me by your dear Master. I agree snowflakes are one of nature’s most fragile gifts to humanity – each unique and yet belong to a wonderful community that covers the earth with softness. Thank you for the introduction to Ann-Christine, Maren and Hanna and their brilliant photography and blogs. Sending much love and many hugs to my dear friend, the Fab Four of Cley!!!!!🤗🤗🤗🤗❤️❤️❤️❤️❄️❄️❄️❄️

sorry, we have to answer because Siri 🙂 and 🙂 Selma are very busy trying their fairy magic against the melting of the snow. Unfortunately, we think they will not succeed.
Snowflakes are great masterpieces of art by nature. William Scoresby, a whaler and scientist after him the Scoresby Sound is named, spend months drawing snowflakes while he was frozen in at the coast of NE Greenland. We had a look at his pictures in the Whitby library where his estate is stored.
Enjoy the snow and have a happy week.

Together with Otto von Münchow, we see photographing common subjects differently. We always find it annoying when you see masses of similar pictures on social media. That’s boring, isn’t it? Sunsets, boats, and flowers f.e. are not seen that differently by different photographers. We think that’s an illusion or a rationalisation by the photographers.

    Pit

    • Guten Morgen, lieber Pit,

  19. Such beautiful photos! Oddly, we’ve been hovering around -2C a bit ourselves, but unfortunately we have only the cold and no snow. It’s harder to appreciate the cold when there’s no power and homes are as cold as the outside, but beauty has a strange ability to warm the heart, and I’m certainly warmed by looking at these images!

    • Good morning, dear Linda,
oh dear, you have a power cut we suppose. We keep our fingers crossed that the power will soon come back.
The snow is gone at ours. It was a short winter of ten days only. Now it’s warm and we already miss the snow.
We hope you got it warm again in your house.
      Thanks for your kind words.

  20. Wonderful snow photos. The full picture of Klausbernd disappearing down a path is my favorite, although the bird with it’s red berries and orange beak is a close second. I, too, love the snow and have been known to disappear into the wilderness on snow camping trips. As for tending fire or staring at a computer screen, I suspect you can guess what my favorite is. 🙂 Hard to beat a crackling fire on a cold day! –Curt

    • Dear Curt,
      thanks a lot.
We will soon light a fire just for fun. It became warm again and the snow is nearly gone. It’s a pity but that seems to be the end of winter.
Thanks for liking Dina’s photos. We were out all day long the last fortnight when we had the snow and Dina couldn’t stop taking pictures. In the end, we choose these four photos for our blog.

We are happy that you like Dina’s photography. Indeed, we wanted to tell the story of snowy days. Those days are quite rare here. These winter days lasted ten days only, much too short for our taste.
We wish you a wonderful rest of this week.

    • Dear Steve,
thanks a lot for this link to Lilias Trotter. We never heard of her before. What an amazing life she lived. That she was a neighbour of Anthony Trollope shows how artists had the tendency to live near to each other. You can especially see this in England in St. Ives f.e. but actually in our coastal villages as well.
      Wishing you a wonderful weekend

  21. I bet you enjoyed the winter. It’s not necessarily given it will arrives at Norfolk, I would believe? Here in Bergen, Norway, we have already had the most fantastic winter in many years. Yes, cold, down to -15 degrees (at least at night), but I’ll take that any day for some winter in the city and its surroundings. You captured winter beautifully in these images. And thank you for the lovely mentioning of my book. ❤ Wish you a lovely weekend – probably with the winter gone by now, as this is the case over here on the other side of the North Sea.

      you are very welcome.
We have had a beautiful winter on our coast too. Unfortunately, it lasted only for ten days. It’s all gone now and overnight we got spring here.

  22. Hello! Just by watching this photos I feel cold. You are so brave. I know that you are saying that it is a matter of clothing, but I am wondering: “would I survive in that climate even with clothes for snow?” I am not sure because I regularly feel cold even in spring and autumn (and sometimes in summer in the shade) in Mexico City 😀
    Have a great weekend!

    • Dear Marianne,
people are different. We love winter and cold weather preferably with lots of snow. We couldn’t live in a place with mostly sunshine and hot weather. Actually, we once had to live in the south of Greece. This permanent sunshine and warm weather made us quite unhappy. We love the North in every respect, its nature and culture. So everyone has their likes and dislikes. From what you have commented we are sure that would not be the right climate for you here. When we write to you that our greatest holiday was an expedition to Northeast Greenland that will give you the shivers just by reading it, we suppose.

    • Lieber Pit,

So, so: Ihr habt also neue Smartphones. Gratuliere! Ich bleibe noch bei meinem Samsung S9+.
