Snowdrop Orb

The snowdrops are perkily poking their heads out in our garden, where Siri 🙂 and 🙂 Selma have been busily planting them. But not only there, near us are the Walsingham Abbey Grounds, famous for their snowdrop carpets. We went there a few days ago to admire masses of snowdrops.

Keck stecken Schneeglöckchen ihre Köpfchen unserem Garten heraus, wo Siri 🙂 und 🙂 Selma sie emsig pflanzten. Aber nicht nur dort, bei uns in der Nähe liegen die Walsingham Abbey Grounds, die berühmt für ihre Schneeglöckchenteppiche sind. Dort fuhren wir vor ein paar Tagen hin, um Massen von Schneeglöckchen zu bewundern.

Selma 🙂 said it was now time to dust off Dina’s lens ball to play around with it, which makes such an outing even more exciting. But, oh dear, we had to practise taking pictures with it first. Either it rolled reluctantly from its place or it showed the treetops and sky instead of the snowdrops. With a bit of fumbling around and silent fairy cursing and sophisticated fairy magic, we managed to get reasonably acceptable pictures.

Siri 🙂 meinte, nun sei es an der Zeit Dinas Lensball zu entstauben, um mit ihm herumzuspielen, was solch einen Ausflug noch spannender macht. Aber, oh weh, damit zu fotografieren mussten wir erst einmal üben. Entweder rollte er widerständig von seinem Platz oder er zeigte die Baumkronen und Himmel statt die Schneeglöckchen. Mit ein wenig Herumgefummele, leisem Feenfluchen und Feenmagie bekamen wir letztendlich leidlich annehmbare Bilder hin.
Pit vom Fritztown News Blog ist ein Meister der Lens Ball Fotografie. Besucht ihn ‘mal. Dina liegt es mehr, solch einen Balleffekt in Photoshop zu erzeugen.

Snowdrops Orb

Siri 🙂 and 🙂 Selma love to create such orbs and want to share it. But be careful, it’s addictive! Our dear Bookfayries are ‘orbing’ every picture right now. That’s the trick:

1) Open an image in Photoshop
2) Crop it to a square format
3) Go to filter – distort – polar coordinates and click polar to rectangular 
4) Go to image – rotate – flip vertical
5) Go to filter – distort -polar coordinates – rectangular to polar.
6) Expand canvas: go to image – canvas size; expand to your liking but choose the right colour before saving.

Well, sophisticated fairy magic, isn’t it?

Siri 🙂 und 🙂 Selma lieben es solche Orbs zu erzegen und möchten es gerne mit euch teilen. Aber wir warnen euch, das ist süchtig machend! Unsere lieben Buchfeen ‘orbieren’ gerade jedes Bild. Und so geht es:

1.) öffnet euer Bild in Photoshop
2.) beschneide es zu einem Quadrat
3.) gehe zu FILTER – DISTORT (Verzerren) – POLARE KOORDINATEN und klick ‘polar zu rechteckig’ an
4.) gehe zu IMAGE – ROTIEREN – flip vertikal
5.) gehe wieder zu FILTER – VERZERRE die polar Koordinaten – rechteckig nach polar
6.) Vergrößere das Bild: gehe zu IMAGE – CANVAS SIZE und erweitere sie dort wie du es möchtest, du musst jedoch deine Farbe vorm Abspeichern eingegeben haben

Wenn euch das verblüfft, naja, es ist ausgebuffte Feenmagie.

  4. By coincidence, I also posted some photos today, including snowdrops, and Ollie. But they are not as grand as the snowdrops at Walsingham, and I did not have an orb.
    Besides, Dina’s photos are always superb, and mine are just a record of a dog-walk. 🙂

  6. Absolutely delightful photos and commentary. The “silent fairy cursing and sophisticated fairy magic” plus PhotoShop magic are wondrous. As are the snowdrops. Our ground is still snow-covered from a recent blizzard, and no snowdrops here, so I am vicariously enjoying your harbingers of Spring! My best to all the Fab Four of Cley!

      indeed, the “silent fairy cursing and sophisticated fairy magic” plus PhotoShop magic is great, isn’t it? That’s how to work wonders.
      We are amazed every year again about these dense and huge carpets of snowdrops. And there are so many different kinds. Siri 🙂 and 🙂 Selma just planted this Walsingham kind of snowdrops at our drive and then we planted late-flowering snowdrops as well. The late ones are just starting to show their green heads. We know snowdrops that flower very early in the snow in January. We love this yellow and white combination of aconites and snowdrops.
      The problem is, what will you do with these flowerbeds when the last snowdrops are gone in March? We have to think about it.

      diese Schneeglöckchendichte über solch große Flächen haben wir auch nur hier erlebt. Hier sind sie jedoch nicht so selten. In Walsingham haben sie sich jedoch besonders gut über eine riesige Fläche verbreitet. Diese Menge zieht einen schon in den Bann.

    I love this time of the year. In arctic Norway we have loads of snow and no sign of snowdrops yet.
    The lensball looks good to me and since the instructions seem to be quite straightforward, I’ll give it a go and report back to you.

      we really envy you. We wouldn’t mind having lots of snow. That’s always great here, when having some snow people think you can’t drive on snow. It’s great fun driving around being on your own on our country roads.

There is such sheer beauty and purity to the snowdrop orb photos – absolutely stunning and I can imagine how tempting it is to work this magic! 😀 Snowdrops are a delicate precursor to Spring and it’s heartening how popular snowdrops walks have become over the years! In the garden, the daffodils have just started to flower and already keeled over so just been out to give them some extra support!       The snowdrops and aconites are flowering here at the coast not so far north from you but no sign of the daffodils in our garden only in very sheltered places.
      The snowdrops walks are big business in Walsingham (absolutely overpriced). They sell different kinds of snowdrops as well. Dina was with us and her photo group there.

    • We had to live in Greece and in California, we couldn’t stand this sunshine every day. Fortunately, we could ‘flee’ to Norway pretty soon.
      We are nordic and need snow and ice and the cosiness of the dark time. People are very different in how they react to weather and climate.

  14. What a treat to see this! Like Per Magnus, we have too much snow at the moment – and I’m sure you’d rather have the snow right now, right?
    Dina told me you have been planting more snowdrops at home. Do you have different varieties?
    Somehow snowdrops look like snowdrops to me, but obviously with more than 2500 varieties and 20 species on the market, I’d love to have a wide variety if I could.

    Thanks for the great reading ideas. I’m very much enjoying Knausgaard.

    • Dearest Annalena,
      we planted early-flowering, normal-flowering, pearl ones and late-flowering snowdrops. They all have different names, but sorry, we forgot these names. Siri 🙂 is pissed that we haven’t written the names down. Well, she could have done it. Nevertheless, we – mostly Siri 🙂 and 🙂 Selma – planted several hundred snowdrops in flowerbeds next to our drive. That looks absolutely great. We planted different varieties in combination with Aconites.
      At Walsingham Estate they sell different varieties. If we remember it correctly they sell four different varieties there. We got some there, some from our gardener, some from a garden centre.
      We are still reading the Knausgård in the evening and at daytime “Troy” by S. Fry. One can read it as a well-done introduction into Homer’s “Ilias” and other classic sources about the Trojan War. After this, we’ll read Philip Pullman’s “Book of Dust”, Vol. two “The Secret Commonwealth”. We read Vol. I “La Belle Belle Sauvage” and liked it really much. Pullman is as old as our dear Master and from Norwich. This Vol. II is from 2019 and has around 690 pages. You know we love big books 😉 Hanne reads the books of McCallum, a painter and writer she knows. He writes books about the wildlife of North Norfolk.

      We prefer the orbs produced with Photoshop. They are more sophisticated than the ones with the lens ball. But maybe we need a bit more practise photographing a lens ball image.

  18. So many snowdrops, it looks like a wonderful carpet. I’ve seen them lately in Kew Gardens – they are just so sweet and make Winter even nicer. The orb pictures are fantastic. It is great to play with pictures, taking them and afterwards. Sending love – Ute

      these dense carpets of snowdrops are magnificent as they are that huge, snowdrops as far as you can see at some places.
      Playing with the pictures afterwards is great fun.
      The next time we’ll come to London we would love to visit Kew Gardens as well. It’s typical for us, we have many books about Kew but have never been there. Shame on us.

  19. HIer schauen die Schneeglöckchen ungefähr 1cm aus dem Boden heraus. Ich beobachte sie jetzt jeden Tag. 😀 Das erste Zeichen des Frühlings.
    Meine Glaskugel liebe ich auch. Fange aber nur Motive damit ein. Die Orbs sind schon toll. Muss ich auch mal ausprobieren. GlG aus dem Schwedenländchen!

    • Leider, leider hatten wir bis jetzt keinen Schnee. Wir finden das noch faszinierender, wenn die Schneeglöckchen von einer Schneedecke umgeben sind. Monochrom weiß, das hat doch einen Charme. Die späte Sorte der Schneeglöckchen streckt auch gerade ihre Köpfchen aus den Boden.
      Irgendwie ist das mit der Glaskugel nicht so einfach. Wir tun uns schwer damit. Wie schon gesagt, wir brauchen wohl mehr Routine mit dieser Art von Fotografie. Die Erzeugung von Orbs mit Photoshop finden wir weitaus einfacher. Wir lieben auch die Ergebnisse mehr – naja, weil Dina das besser kann.

  21. Love the old bridge and that lovely close up of the snowdrops. Fun with the lens ball. I don’t possess such a thing, nor Photoshop, but I do like that image Dina created. No snowdrops here but lots of Bermuda buttercups. Have a wonderful Springtime!

      We had to google Bermuda buttercups. They are even nice in a salad we read. We are not quite sure, but we think snowdrops are slightly poisonous.
      The bridge is really old but many times renovated. We love it as well, an elegant feature in this landscape.

  25. The magic energy of this post can be felt from Vancouver, Canada. I LOVE snowdrops for they remind me of courage and resilience. They are one of the first flowers to wake up from winter’s rest. While they may seem to be shy flowers, I see them as fierce protectors of their magic. I read that the real reason they look towards the earth is to ensure their pollen is kept dry and sweet in order to attract the few insects flying in winter. They do not droop – they defend.

    Always a joy to see you posts come up in my reader. Thank you dear Siri and Selma for the magic. Thank you Hanne for your photography and dedication to helping others achieve great things using editing techniques. Thank you Klausbernd for the book recommendations.     nun fuehle ich mich aber wirklich “gebauchpinselt”! 😀 Aber im Ernst: ganz lieben Dank fuer die lobende Erwaehnung und den Verweis auf mein Blog und meine Glaskugelbilder vom Campus der Stanford-Universitaet. Aber ein “Meister der Lens Ball Fotografie bin ich nun wirklich nicht. Ich muss nich viel ueben, insbesondere mit dem Fokus. Bisher reguliert sich die Tiefenschaerfe eher nach dem Zufallsprinzip. Macht aber trotzdem Spass.

      wir finden deine Glaskugelbilder schon sehr gut. Du hast uns ja darauf gebracht, auch einmal mit einer solchen Glaskugel zu fotografieren. Vielen Dank! Wie geschrieben, wir tun uns damit noch schwer. Dina liegt es mehr, Orbs mit Photoshop zu produzieren. Bei uns fangen die Schwierigkeiten bereits damit an, wie wir die Kugel positionieren. Aber besonders Siri 🙂 und 🙂 Selma lieben es, damit zu spielen und packen die Glaskugel stets ein, wenn wir umherfahren.
      Mit lieben Grüßen von der seit Tagen sonnigen Küste. Wir haben es knapp über null und fast windstill, wunderschön. Dina ist deswegen gerade unterwegs zu fotografieren.

      Dina sagte mir gerade, bevor sie zum Fotografieren verschwand, dass du kein Photoshop sondern Affinity hast. Mit Affinity kann man diese Orbs auch produzieren. Das geht wohl ähnlich wie bei Photoshop. Dina wird noch etwas dazu schreiben, wenn sie zurückkommt.

    • Guten Morgen, liebe Brigitte,
      bei uns scheint wirklich der Frühlig schon Einzug gehalten zu haben, obwohl der Winter uns leider noch gar nicht besucht hat. Wir haben zwar Temperturen um den Gefrierpunkt aber feisten Sonnenschein bereits seit vielen Tagen. In der Sonne ist es natürlich wärmer.
      Diese Schneeglöckchenfelder sind schon besonders. Bei uns kommen zuerst diese riesigen weißen Schneeglöckchenfeler und dann die ebenso großen blauen Glockenblumenfelder. Beides finden wir magisch.

      Obwohl der Winter uns nicht besuchte, haben wir seit Tagen frühlingshaften Sonnenschein, der mehr und mehr Schneeglöckchen herauslockt. Die Maiglöckchen dagegen schlummern bei uns noch in der Erde, aber an geschützten Stellen schauen die Spitzen der Narzissen aus den Beeten hervor.
      Übrigens liegen wir etwa auf der gleichen geographischen Breite wie ihr in Berlin, allerdings haben wir ausgeprägtes maritimes Klima und ihr deutliches Kontinentalklima.

      Hier stürmt es entsetzlich! Busse fahren nicht, Straßen sind gesperrt und ich hoffe, dass ich heute zur Arbeit komme. Ich unterrichte in der Graphothek Berlin, da benötige ich schon ohne Sturm eine Stunde hin. Berlin ist groß.
      Ich werde mich mal 2 Stunden vorher aufmachen und wenn ich es schaffe, vorher da zu sein, dann setze ich mich in ein Kaffee und harre der Dinge!

      dann drücken wir dir fest die Daumen, dass du noch rechtzeitig in der Graphothek ankommst.
      Wir hatten hier den großen Sturm vor zwei Tagen. Es stürmte derart stark, dass man draußen nicht stehen konnte. Heute folgte dem ein kleinerer Sturm, der aber relativ harmlos ist.

  36. Schneeglöckchenteppiche – wie wundervoll. Offensichtlich ward Ihr nicht allein – ebenfalls wundervoll 🙂
    Das mit dem Lensball hat mich neugierig gemacht und ziemlich angetriggert. Das werde ich wohl einfach mal ausprobieren “MÜSSEN”.

      Dina organisierte ein Foto-Outing für ihren Fotoclub, aber wegen des wunderbaren Wetters waren auch noch einige andere Leute dort. Die Schneeglöckchen hatten viele Bewunderer.
      Mit dem Lens Ball probiert man am besten etwas herum, wie man ihn positioniert, wie man das Bild in ihm fotografiert und bei welchen Objekten er sich gut eignet.

  41. Dina’s photos are, as always, a joy and your post, Fab Four, was great. Interesting about the lens ball, and the results are fascinating. When I saw the field of snowdrops I heard myself gasp. I have never seen such a mass of them, how thrilling it must be to see it in person. Cheers to you all.

      Snowdrops are native to Europe, but despite this, we have never seen such large areas densely covered with snowdrops as in England. We find it thrilling as well to see such big fields of snowdrops. Later in the year, we have here as big fields of bluebells.

  49. I’ve seen people using these orbs but I still prefer seeing the world without them. It’s fun to share the technique in Photoshop and I appreciate that – but again, My favorites are the “straight” photos. What an abundant carpet of Snowdrops! I’ve never seen anything remotely like that here. Wonderful. 😉

      sorry for not answering before.
      Hanne-Dina doesn’t use her orb anymore. We had problems to hold it in a way that it produces a picture we would like. Siri 🙂 and 🙂 Selma are now happily playing with it.
