Constable Country

We love to take the night ferry from Harwich to Hook van Holland when we want to visit friends on the continent. This time we took a whole day to travel to Harwich. Namely, we visited Flatford Mill, a hamlet made world famous by Constable.

The painter John Constable grew up in Bergholt and went to nearby Flatford Mill to paint. We were amazed at how little this place has changed in the last 200 years. It was a journey back in time to the 18th century. Here at the Stour River, next to the mill, there are some thatched cottages, which offer a romantic ensemble, like out of a picture book.

John Constable, who became the most famous landscape painter in England, felt that he could paint best in his immediate surroundings because he was familiar with them. Even as a boy, he constantly wandered through this area. In contrast to the view of art at the time, Constable was not concerned with fantasy and imagination, but with reproducing nature as realistically as possible. “Today photography can do even better“, Siri noted to Dina’s delight.

His 1816 painting Flatford Mill was the largest painting he did outdoors in nature. It inspired him to paint even larger canvases in the studio. Although Constable became so famous, he sold just 20 of his paintings in his lifetime. His success was greater in France than in England. He inspired the Impressionists, among others.

From Flatford Mill there are fine walks signposted in the footsteps of Constable. However, since it was downright summery warm, we were drawn to the pub, where we talked over drinks about how, especially in England, there are places where time seems to stand still.

Siri and Selma especially enjoyed the sunset balloon flight over Constable country

  2. England is truly a fairylike country. No wonder Siri and Selma were thrilled to be treated to a balloon flight over this iconic strip of land. I especially like the late Constable.
I’d love to meet you in the Tate later this year and I hope it will work, fingers crossed. Let’s talk next weekend.

  3. Those are wonderful images! I think England isn’t a real country, but rather one of those enviroments in wich railway tracks are built and little trains loop endelessly. It never changes. Nothing ever changes. At the end of the day Constable, Wordsworth and Shakespeare gather in the pub and tell each jokes that were brought to the country by Harald Bluetooth when he was there for a short holiday (at Butlins) and kinky stories (nudge nuge wink wink) told by Aulus Plautius during his invasion in 43 AD. Those stories never grow old, and later that night everybody is falling asleep with a smile on their faces. Tomorrow another day, although tomorrow doesn’t really excist. It’s always today.

  6. What a wonderful adventure into the past. Hanne – your photography brought Flatford Mill alive. Did you take these photos in the late afternoon? There is an gentle energy that emanates from the sky and reflection of buildings on the water, the tree branches that look upwards – all come together with a peaceful tranquility. I especially appreciated that you linked to John Constable’s Flatford Mill at the Tate, which shares similar lighting to what you captured in your photography.

Alte Kulturstätten in idyllischer Umgebung. Warum baut man dann weltweit so glatte kubistische Häuser? Meist überdimensioniert groß und hoch. Beispiel Dubai.

Time has come to a stop at Flatford Mill. That reminds us of Aldous Huxley who planned to write a novel “When Time Has Come to a Stop” but died before he could finish it.

  13. Despite all the beautifully colored flowers in the world, I have a special affection for the white, and the white houses in the first two photos seem to me to be blooming in the landscape like pure, white flowers. They’re quite striking. The half-timbered house in the fourth photo is especially charming. What a wonderful day — or a dozen — could be passed in such a place! Thanks so much for sharing it with us.
