Some time ago a reader of mine made me aware of the fact that my blogposts don’t appear on the WordPress Reader. Under no topics except in the list for the followers. Why is this?
I have no clue! Can you help? I have blogged so much about the arctic and I make sure I tag it in my three different languages NO-DE-Eng, yet it never shows up in the Reader.
Most of the time I blog about Norway and tag every post Norge, Norway, Norwegen but WordPress still neglects me. 🙂 How can I change it, I wonder? Do I need a tool?
If I am not in The Rhine Valley or back home in Norway, I’m mostly in North Norfolk.
An Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty that WordPress doesn’t want to know anything about. 🙂 Half of the posts entering the weekly photo challenge are not listed in this topic, do you know why? I’d be most grateful, if you’d tell me!
Yours sincerely,
Dina
But it does! Could it be the settings of this particular reader?

Nono; I appear in your Reader because you’re my follower, that’s ok.
The problem is; when you search the Reader for a Topic/theme/Thema I write about, like Norway, Nofolk or the Arctic, my posts about this topics will NOT appear, that’s my concern. Because I see a lot of my fellow bloggers being listed in the Reader under Topics/Themen like wildlife, birds, landscape, travelling…
What do they do right, that I do wrong??

I have encountered random cases of not being included under certain areas, even if tagged correctly and my wife several times. We’ve been in contact with the WP support team but never really gotten any good feedback. 😦
So, no help for you – but you’re not alone…

I have of course tried to find a solution to this problem, but no… I have asked almost every blogger that successfully appeared under a topic as well as in the list of the followers. But it was never explained why, it just worked. So why doens’t it work for me?

Thank you very much Martin!
This kind of answer I googled, like “there were no real good feedback or help from the support team” so I actually haven’t asked them myself. But I’ll do so now.
I was more or less hoping that someone out there who had mastered the difficulties, someone who had changed something on the settings or whatever and would bring me faster to the next step. 🙂
Now I’m really determined to find out! 🙂
Have a great day.

Hi Dina,
I usually put the category on photography and on color or black and white… So I made a search for black and white to see if I would get anything. And guess what… A few (2 or 3 max) black and whites (not mine) and your post (this one) together with a lot of other color photos… ???? I think that the problem is with WP, not you. There must be some mix up in their categories or their search engine… If you have opened a case with WP, maybe you should add this to it… it might point them in the right direction. Usually they are rather helpful. If you you don’t get any reaction or not the right one, it may be that they don’t see where the problem is…
I hope this may help? 😉

That’s the Problem you see, I want to be found when someone goes to the topicbar on the right hand side. Now they want to find all thebBlogs out there from WordPress that have Norway as a Topic. Or Norfolk. Or the Arctic.
You plan a visit to a foreign country and now you go the Reader and you put this country in the topicbar…

WordPress adds the tags and the categories. If the total number of the two is greater than 6 (or maybe it’s 7), then the post does not go into the reader. I learned this the hard way as well!

Now we’re finally getting somewhere!
Well, if this is right, and no doubt you have learned it the hard way, 😦 I have no chance to come through; I placed the post in 3 categories alone.
Yet, I have seen Stefano Crosio appear under the topics Photography and Wildlife with one post and he had 8 tags on it. So when and why does it work and when not??

Can’t answer on that one. All I know is that’s the answer I got from the help forum and, when i corrected it I started appearing, there. Let me know if you learn anything else, and good luck!

Have your blog ever been wrongfully marked as spam? If so, then all your activity gets blacklisted. It happened to me once because I had an argument with another blogger and she was the bitchy type that made all her friends mark me as spam.
I had to contact the support team and they eventually “un-spammed” my profile.

I have also found blogs about Norway that had no tags “Norway”. But they came from Norway. I wonder if it has anything to do with me being situated in Germany, England and Norway. I originally started blogging with a german set up.Nowadays I mostly blog in english, but WordPress doesn’t register the change and I myself can’t change all the original settings; I can ‘t change “Startseite”-> “home”.

Ok I speak English – What the reason could be is that you don’t have any tags ?? – – I can’t see any added to this post – So THAT could be one of the reasons? – not tag on the images but tags added (when you are making the post) from TAGS at the right side of your making post page? I did check right now and yes correct I couldn’t find you under anything from your text – so try to make at lease 8 TAGS on the next post?

The photos in this post are wonderful, Dina.
I’ve never tried looking for my own posts under either the tags or categories I apply to them, so I’m no help on that one. I don’t use the reader as I get dizzy scrolling through pages on the computer. I rely on email notifications to let me know when a blog I am following has a new post. But then I rely on my email ‘inbox’ for everything due too my intermittent memory dysfunction.
I’ve never found the forums or help desk much help to be honest. I find it better, as you have just done, to ask a question in a post and hope your followers have the answer from their own experience.

In diesem Fall greift Regel 2.

You have several questions and I’m not sure that I am any help, but…the posts that end up in my e-mail are different (they subscribe), and the ones in the Reader (I believe) are only the ones you Follow. As far as ending up in their topics. I do have my posts show up, and I believe that it is random. I do recall that one blogger said that if you list more than 15 tags, they ignore you. So I am careful to list 10 or less.I always keep in mind that the massive amounts of blogs on WordPress. It’s a wonder that we find each other.

Thanks a lot for joining in the discussion, Sally. You are righ about the amount of tags, but there are other reasons as well. (see further down). In the meantime I have opened a thread at the Forum, please join in, if you feel like it.
Because there’s such a massive amounts of blogs on WP, I find it even more important that other bloggers can be found because of the topics they write about. I use the topicbar to make a selection in the masses. 🙂

Hej Dina!

Ich hab jetzt erstmal genau durchgelesen, was du geschrieben hast.
http://de.forums.wordpress.com/topic/nach-tags-unabhangig-von-sprache-suchen
http://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/search-for-a-tagacross-all-wpcom-independent-from-blogs-language

@ all
My friends, I you don’t mind me saying that think many of those answering Dina’s posting seem to have got the terms mixed up. So let’s try and get them cleared up.
What Dina was posting about was NOT the READER itself.
The READER is a feature every single WP user configures him-/herself by “following” a certain blog. Once you’ve clicked on “follow” or entered the URL of the blog you want to see in your reader, every new posting on that specific blog will appear in your (personal) reader. It may take a while, but it’ll get there. You can also configure the reader [via “edit”] for you to get e-mail notifications [immediately, daily, weekly or none at all] via your e-mail programme whenever a new posting appears on the blog(s) in your reader. Btw, those e-mail notifications are not always on the same time frame with the postings appearing in the reader. There might be (quite) some difference as to when they appear where.
To the best of my knowledge: To have the postings in your reader, you need to “follow” them with the “follow button”, which, btw, is only available if the blogger has enabled that feature. If you only put your e-mail address in the space that is provided and then click on “sign up”, you’ll get e-mail notifications in your e-mail programme, but the new postings from that specific blog will NOT appear in the reader.
Conclusion: the READER works fine for all people who ALREADY KNOW Dina and her blog. That’s not the question here.
What Dina was talking about was for people who do NOT know her yet and who’re just checking via the “topics” search for any posting about, let’s say “Norway” by whomsoever. You can do this, e.g., from your reader. There, on the right, you find the heading “TOPICS”, and next to it the button “EXPLORE”. Click on that and a new pages opens, with a cloud of the most searched-for topics. At the top of this page you have a field to enter the specific topic you’re looking for. Enter “Norway” here, e.g., and you will not find any of Dina’s articles. That is her problem. And that’s a real problem, which, btw, I have encountered to any of my blogs and postings, too. To the best of my knowledge NONE of my postings has ever appeared in that list.
Caution: I admit, this is difficult to prove as there are possibly hundreds or even thousands of postings with the same tag(s) within a very short period and one needs to scroll a long way down. But I have tried that, too, and never been successful.
I have no idea if the number of tags/categories really matters. But I seem to remember that WP does indeed have a recommendation about how many you should have. I’ll have to try and find that information some time.
Sorry this has been a very longish comment, but I hope it cleared up the terms. Thanks for your patience with my rambling on. 😉
@ Dina: Did you open a thread in the help forum(s)? If so, would you, please, let us know the URL to it so that we can add our comments there?
Best regards from southern Texas,

If someone that is not following my blog searches the topics in the Reader, my posts about “Norway”, “Norfolk” and the “Arctic” never come up.

Dear folks,
I suppose WP is like any big institution it needs some pressure to react. To moan that there is something wrong with reader doesn`t help. We should ALL complain at the support desk of WP (you find the adress in Dina`s comment just above mine here). WP tries to build an image of being a democratic organization and we should remind them that we should be heard. We represent quite a number of bloggers and to make that clear we ALL have to react und complain. I am sure that WP will react then – well, at least I hope so.
Greetings from the coast of North Norfolk

topics, tags etc.
After having concerned myself some more with this subject, I’ve come to the following conclusions as to the problem of some postings not showing up at a topic search for the respective tag:
– The search result depends on the language the respective blogger has set as the primary language of his/her blog [see http://tinyurl.com/ketn3gv, item 6 & http://tinyurl.com/l5l8efk & http://tinyurl.com/ls827gm%5D. Note: the search for http://de.wordpress.com/#!/read/topic/norway/ does indeed show Dina’s posting in the second place. The missing reaction by WP to the postings in the forum as to that problem shows, to my mind, that there’s not much interest in this “problem” on WP’s side.
– Too many tags prevent the respective posting from being included in the topics search. [see http://tinyurl.com/ldflp27, item 1]. Bear in mind that the categories will count in that regard, too, in addition to the tags.
– As there sometimes is an extremely high number of postings having the same tag(s) and the search results are shown in chronological order [most recent first], one will have to scroll down way back to find a certain posting. One example of that is the tag “Norway”. A search for that produces hundreds – I’m exaggerating only a little – of postings in the blog “Views of Norway” [http://visitnorway.wordpress.com]. It seems that every Jill and Joe can upload their pictures there. And thereby this blog kind of blocks the chance to find other postings tagged “Norway”. That’s really deplorable and to my mind borders spamming.
Conclusion: first of all it’ll be with us bloggers to make the best of this predicament, which means to reduce the number of the tags (and categories) in the first place. And in the second place, if we really want to be found “internationally”, install two blogs [as much work as that entails as I can say from my own experience in maintaining one blog in German and one in English], one in one’s own native language and one in English.
On top of that we should, as Klausbernd [http://tinyurl.com/n7kvpwu] suggests, make WP aware of our suggestions/wishes, even if I doubt – from my personal experience in that regard and from their attention to the present discussion in the forums – that we’ll have much success there.
*****
topics, tags etc.

I have now changed the settings to “English” and now it works a lot, lot better! 🙂
I have found this blogpost not only in the “arctic” topics, it’s also listed in some photographic topics which I haven’t tagged! For me, using mostly the english language, it’s better to Switch. Thank you all for your help!
I also changed my tags to only one language, instead of “Norge, Norwegen, Norway”, I’ll have to go for one, so it’ll be Norway.
I reduced the tags from 12 to 5.
I reduces the categories from three to one.
Was ist jetzt anders:
1.Einstellungen: English
2.Taggs: reduziert auf 5
3 Die Taggs sind nur in Englisch.
4.Statt 3 nur 1 Kategorie.
Das wirft wieder Fragen auf. Welchen Änderungen waren jetzt überflüssig? Damit muss ich mich noch beschäftigen. 🙂
Have a lovely Weekend.
Ein schönes Wochenende
wünscht euch allen

An alle,

thank you very much for the link. I use categories, but maybe “not clear enough”, I think I’d rename some of my categoris now and dump a few too.
Thank you so much for kind offer. I’ll get back to you on that! 🙂

What I’ve done is go through the list they offer as examples, see what each of them has as a list of posts, and choose which of them I want to be associated with.
The results from “Photos” tends to be everyday snapshots, while the results from “Photography” tends to be of much higher quality. The same applies to “Flowers” versus “Flora”. Even more thought and effort goes into “Macro”, “Bokeh”, and “DoF”.
If you’re just after page hits, rather than like-minded photographers — go with “Photos” and “Flowers”. If you want more critical followers and comments, go with “Photography” and “Flora”. The same will be true with other categories; i.e., mass versus quality.

I agree and I say thank you as well, Mitch! It’s really helpful and I am eager to learn more bout the settings at WP. It’s like handling a camera, in a way. If you don’t master your camera, you’ll not get all out of it. 🙂

Are you referring to the dashboard? I find that some of my posts show up while others don’t

Yes, this discussion is about the reader on your dashboard. We all seem to have similar problems. Thanks for joining in!

Was bedeutet das?

Howdy! This post could not be written any better!
Looking at this article reminds me of my previous roommate!
He constantly kept preaching about this.
I will forward this article to him. Fairly certain he will have a
great read. Many thanks for sharing!

When this happened to me, it turned out I had too many topics for Tags. I’ve found, if I keep the number of tags at 8-10, things work fine. Hope it helps.
LikeLiked by 1 person
It does! WordPress says max 15. That means counting bot the categories and the tags in one post. But acutally very many bloggers expresses exactely the same, less works better.
Thank you so much for joining in.

Unfortunately I’m new in this world of blogging and I can`t help you. But I’m delighted with your photos. Are the photos of this post all from Norway? I’ve never thought about Norway as a travelling destiny, but your photos are making me think seriously about it! Beautiful country!
LikeLiked by 1 person
No, the photos are not solely from Norway. The first ones are from the Arctic part of Norway, then the south east of Norway where I come from and then finally you see photos from North Norfolk, UK, where I spend a lot of time. I’m glad you enjoyed it. 🙂

Yes indeed, Madhu, I’m absolutely amazed how many are struggling with the settings. This problems are hardly known to the bloggers who started with the english set up straight away. I’ve learned a lot now, unfortunately, we are limited as far as the language is concerned. Thank you so much for looking into this action! 🙂

Great series Dina.
Regarding the Reader, it is a great mystery really. I have similar issues as you. What I found was sometimes when I have too many tags, the post does not make it to the reader. Simply deleting a tag or two seems to do the trick for me. Now I make sure I follow my own blog to make sure that things get posted correctly. Hope this helps.

The Reader is still a mystery, but since I changed the settings to englsh is has become easier. I have reduced the tags too, that also helps. I follow my own blog too, to see how it appears. That was never a problem; it appears to the followers. The problem was; I write about “Norway”, have the word “Norway” in the topic + tag and + category. Still it didn’t show up in the Reader under “Norway”. Because I had the german settings and Norway is english and WordPress is solely construchted for one language…
Thanks for joining in, Mark. Appreciate it very much..

Your posts are beautiful, and I love knowing more about your part of the country. I hope someday to be able to travel there. Thanks for checking out my blog, too. It’s hard getting started and acquiring followers, but from the looks of these comments, you are doing quite well! http://ohtheplaceswesee.com

Just a quick note here. Thanks for visiting my blog today. I wanted to say I have had this problem unless I use the Costa Rica category as my main one. But When I noticed a decline in my visits and an increase in spam, I investigated further, following tips from several bloggers. Firstly, I changed my password to decrease the spam as one blogger said my blog may have been “blacklisted” by WordPress due to its perhaps being compromised. Then I also followed. Tip to decrease the number of categories and tags to my posts, even though they encourage a blogger to add many tags! Both of these actions seem to have helped my visibility. I wish you well as you have a wonderful blog and lots of beautiful photos.

Thank you so much for this helpful advice and for joining in the discussion. . I’ll look into the settings once more. The spamproblem seems to have been solved, it was a nuisance at one time.
Have a great weekend.

Hi Dina,
Sorry I have no idea about how to be found in the categories, I didn’t even know they had that til I looked at your blog. I just wanted to thank you for taking the time to check out my blog and like some of my pictures. You have some super photos here. I really love the polar bears 🙂

You’re doing nothing wrong… apart from not living in the big land of opportunity?
At least you have a mass following… for my efforts I occasionally only get 4 likes… and those are the posts I wish the whole world could see!
OH well… maybe one of my tags will go viral and I’ll make 100 folk smile… or frown, or? 😉

I was going through the list of blogs I follow and realize when I read this that I don´t see you appear in the Reader 😦 Which is why I miss your beautiful posts.
