Nikon D800: How To Customize It Effectively

I finally did it. I treated myself to the Nikon D800 and the 3 Nikon lenses, “the dreamteam”. Since I got this camera I take less, but better pictures. I practice a lot, there’s so much learn to get the optimum out this jewel of a camera. I’m so happy that Stefano now writes about his experience with the camera and shares he thoughts with us.

If you have been following the photography part of this blog for a while, you will have noticed that I do not talk about equipment, let alone brands, because I think what matters most are the principles of photography and, ultimately, the photographer who is behind the camera. A photographer may have the best gear in the world, but if he/she does not master the technique to make the best of it or lacks creativity or artistic sensitivity, then the resulting photographs will be either technically inadequate or incapable of expressing an artistic message.

However, a dear reader who knows I have (and love) a Nikon D800 and who has recently bought one herself asked whether I would post some advice as to how to effectively set it up, so here I am talking about equipment! 😉

  2. Liebe Dina, ich plage mich seit einiger Zeit mit der Entscheidung, eine Kamera zu kaufen. Umso gespannter bin ich, auf deinem Blog Fotos zu sehen. Mein Englisch reicht bei weitem nicht, um den ausführlichen Bericht zu verstehen. Viel Spaß mit deiner neuen *Freundin* (Nikon) wünsche ich dir.

      herzlichen Dank, ich werde sicherlich viel Spaß mit meiner neuen Freundin haben. 🙂 Ich habe lange hin und her überlegt, kaufe ich jetzt die D800 oder lieber die D7000. Jetzt ist es getan und ich bin selbst gespannt. 🙂

    Ist die D800 auch für Leute geeignet, die vorher keine Spiegelreflexkamera hatten? Es wäre ärgerlich, 2000 Euro dafür auszugeben, nur um festzustellen, dass die Kamera zu komplex ist oder ich damit keine besseren Fotos als jetzt mache.

      viele Dank für den sehr interessanten Link! 🙂
      Ich glaube nicht, dass ich jemand der keine Fotoausstattung (Objektive etc) hat dieses Kamera als Anfängerkamera empfehlen würde. Mit 2000€ bist du noch nicht lange dabei, diese Kamera verlangt prime lenses, erstklassige Objektive in FX-Format. Die Objektive kosten ein Vermögen, das muss man vorher wissen. Deswegen habe ich sehr lange mit der Entscheidung eine D800 oder lieber eine D7000 zu kaufen gerungen.

      Dir würde ich eher die D7000 empfehlen. Die gibt es jetzt günstig, auch in Set zu kaufen, da der Nachfolger D7100 (macht bessere Videos) auf dem Markt ist. Ich behalte meine D200 und werde somit die alten Objektive benutzen können. Die D800 kann zwar DX-Objektive erkennen und stellt sich automatisch von FX auf DX Format um, aber das wäre nur eine Notlösung.
      Ich kenne einige die die D7000 benutzen und sie sind alle sehr, sehr zufrieden mit der Kamera.

    • Letztes Jahr besuchte ich einen Foto-Workshop. Dort waren 3 Anfängerinnen mit der D7000, nach einem WE hatten die sehr viel Spaß und Freude mit der Kamera. Ich wünsche dir eine leichte Entscheidung! 🙂

    • Ja, Hans…. da jeg var hjemme i Fredrikstad gikk jeg til Japanphoto for ä sammenligne prisene med videofoto og gikk ut som eier av en D800. Jeg har kjöpt to linser: Nikkor 14-24 2.8 og Nikkor 70-200 2.8.
      Jeg mangler noe i mellom. Hva ville du forslä? Nä benytter jeg mitt reiseobjektiv fra D200 18-200 1: 3.5-5.6 DX VR II, det er ok til ä begynne med..

My own love affair with cameras over the years has become very different as I got older, more like a tired separartion!. Who knows, maybe I will start taking photos again one day?   11. Hallo Dina,
    herzlichen Glückwunsch zur neuen Kamera. Ich habe mich letzte Woche auch dazu durchgerungen ein Upgrade zu kaufen. Sony Alpha 77 mit 16-50/2.8 Objektiv.
    Da mir leider bisher die Zeit fehlte, werde ich morgen mal in die Lüneberger Heide fahren und etwas mit der Kamera rumspielen.
    Ich wünsche dir jedenfalls viel Spaß mit der neuen Kamrea.

    • Yes, that’s right, Iamrcc, the person behind the camera composes the picture. And then.. when you get better and you view the work of the really good ones out there, like Stefano who wrote the post, you immediately spot the difference in the quality, the skill behind it as well.   18. Just wait a year and the D900 will be out..;-)
    I just got the D7000 and its a vast improvement over my trusty D80 and my D50( my first DSLR, I can only dream about the D800 or a D3SX. but I’ll always be an amature with a macro lens.:-))

    • Ed, you’re right of course. Wait and there’ll be something new on the market… BUT: I can only make photos today and I don’t worry too much about what might come. This is a great improvement and I’m sure I’ll stick to it for a long, long time. My dear D200 did a good job for almost 7 years. You have got an excellent camera now and I’m sure a lot of the tipps from Stefano will be helpful for you too. Have fun and enjoy! 🙂
