Eilean Donan Castle

You surely can imagine how much we fairies like castles. Do you know why? We like to chat with ghosts. So we went utterly excited towards the bridge to Skye, where we visited the dream-castle Eilean Donan. It’s the most photographed point in the whole of Scotland.



We were afraid that most of it was taken away from all this picture-taking. We wanted to meet the ghost of poor Alexander Mackenzie, Chief of Kintail, who was condemned to go to school because he was taking part in a revolt in the 15. c. But, as we suspected, all the tourist had chased him away.

Ihr könnt euch sicher vorstellen, dass wir Feen Burgen lieben. Wisst ihr warum? Wir unterhalten uns gerne mit Geistern. Also fuhren wir aufgeregt zur Brücke zur Insel Skye, wo das Traumschloss Eilean Donan liegt. Es gehört zu den meist fotografierten Motiven Schottlands. Wir waren schon ganz bange, dass alles wegfotografiert wurde. Den Geist des armen Alexander Mackenzie, den Chief of Kintail, wollten wir treffen, der wegen eines Aufstands im 15. Jh. dazu verurteilt worden war, eine Schule zu besuchen. Aber ach, wie befürchtet, hatten die Touristen ihn längst verjagt.

We were blown away by this castle which is situated on an island in Loch Duich. You can only reach it over a bridge. The original castle was built as a stronghold against the Vikings who made themselves unpopular. The today’s castle is from the early 20. c. After the old castle was blasted in the 18. c. the ruins were bought by John MacRae who had a dream how this castle had looked like and rebuild it respectively. You see how productive dreams can be.

Dennoch waren wir hin und weg von diesem schottischen Neuschwanstein, das romantisch auf einer Insel im Loch Duich, nur über eine Brücke erreichbar, liegt. Die ursprüngliche Burg wurde als Befestigung gegen die Wikinger erbaut, die sich unbeliebt gemacht hatten. Die heutige Burg stammt aus dem Beginn des 20. Jh. Nachdem sie im 18. Jh. gesprengt worden war, erwarb die Ruine J. MacRae, der träumte, wie diese Burg ausgesehen hat und ließ sie entsprechend aufbauen. Ihr seht, wie produktiv Träume sind.

Dear Dina was utterly taken aback. She started photographing from the car while driving. That was quite dangerous, so we Bookfayries hurried to assist and redirect the traffic.

Dinalein war nicht mehr zu halten; sie begann bereits beim Fahren wie wild zu knipsen. Echt gefährlich, da sie sich hinreißen ließ, mit ihrer Rechten zu fahren und der Linken zu knipsen. Wir waren voll damit beschäftig, den Verkehr für sie umzuleiten.

Completely done we flew to the high main building meeting Robert the Bruce in a secret chamber. Do you know his story? The tale is being captured he saw a spider which, hanging on its yarn, tried to swing onto a beam. The spider tried 6 times in vain. Robert decided if the spider will reach the beam the next time he would go on fighting for Scotland’s freedom, if not he would give up. As Robert, as we suppose, had a command of spider-language the spider succeeded cheered by him. – We wanted to draw the secret of the spider language from him. Since meeting him we talk to the spiders too.

Völlig fertig flatterten wir ins hohe Haupthaus, wo wir im geheimen Zimmer Robert the Bruce trafen. Es geht die Sage, dass Robert als Gefangener eine Spinne sah, die, vom Fenster an einem Faden hängend, sich zu einem Balken schwingen wollte. 6mal versuchte sie es vergebens. Robert schwor, würde es ihr beim 7. Mal gelingen, wollte er weiterhin für Schottlands Freiheit kämpfen, wenn nicht, wollte er aufgeben. Da Robert wohl die Spinnensprache beherrschte, gelang es ihr, von ihm heiß angefeuert. – Wir wollten ihm das Geheimnis der Spinnensprache entlocken und seit unserem Treffen können wir mit Spinnen sprechen – das ist keine Spinnerei!

  3. Simply the Name of this castle is producing Cinema Widescape in my phantasy. Yes, fairies love to talk with ghosts, this I can heartly confirm! Fairies talk with all and all is breathing and left with soul. What this old castle had seen! What stories could it tell? And the ghosts were with you, silent, they are busy, as their ghost job is to keep the invisible spirit of houses in memory and bring it to other souls. Ah, you know, sometimes the ghosts are happy to meet someone they can a Little Bit frighten and sometimes they are quiet like misty winds. Thank you for this enchanting post of scotland.

      The ghosts do a very good job at Eilean Donan, they lure so many folks into the castle and those, who need it, are made a bit frightened that they have to tell something exciting being at home again. Actually we have been twice at Eilean Donan on our journey. The first time the ghosts of the castle were on a walkout hiding in the misty winds from the western islands. They were fed up with the tourists. But as it was utterly boring just hiding in the mist they went back to work. Now they are frightening the visitor much more then before and got a bonus for excellent frightening skills from the Scottish Tourist Board. The Tourist Board had to do this because operators of ghost trains offered them a hell of a great contract.

She done it: spelling this magic into the picture and from one of the towels I mean to see some phantom with a big smile. Ghosts are able to push deep frights in to the top, the head. A Secret is, to ask them for their story. Suddenly they forget their Buh! for a friendly: Hello, and what about your truth?
      Then they switch their spirit into the memory and there it remain in a castle with a personality and some soul.

      Ghost are amazingly talkative, as hardly anybody is talking to them as people are frightened. But fairies are different, they are not frightened, and therefore the ghosts love them. And we fairies love them back and this is what it is all about: We all want to be loved!

    • I Love your posts. They are so full of impression, information and your soulful pics. My acknowledge of ghosts base to an idea of a perhaps…but I believe, that all souls need contact. Maybe some more some less but they show me, that all is connected with the universe. Narcisstic parts are necessary to protect and survive. Everyone has some but too much of them are something what is ill or frightened, or not? I believe, that ghosts are lost senses, memoried senses and a Kind of Energy, that flows invisible between dimensions. The frighetened ghosts, the little ghosts an such which have to tell some mad or dark story, Maybe to avoid a repeat…?😉

    • To ask is always the way to learn the magic, isn’t it?! In most schools of Sufism the student has to ask as the only way that the teacher will tell him something. That was with Master’s Gurdjieff teacher the same.
      Asking is the key with ghosts as with teachers.

      Well, these ghosts … Like fairies it all depends what you understand as being ghosts. Just by accident I found this quote looking for a certain paragraph in James Joyce’s “Ulysses”. Stephen Daedalus, the Intellectual protagonist, is speaking:
      “What is a ghost? One who has faded into impalpability, through death, through absence, through change of manners.”
      Well, ghost and fairies are within as they are our projections into the outside world. They are quite often like misty winds as say.

    • Interesting what YOU writing about ghosts. It made me think that ghosts are a kind of surplus narcissistic energy. The Ego can’t let got, even after being dead. Actually I would call this “super-narcissism”, a narcissism beyond life.

    • Maybe These narcissism ghosts which speak loudly but what about the quite one’s you only can feel? I never met a ‘real’ ghost with a loud human voice frightening me. There exist many Kind of ghosts, or not?Those transparent ones or humans, missing life’s quality…for a very long time …

      concerning reading “Ulysses”: There is always the question “what is understanding?”. I don’t think that one reads modern and post-modern literature to understand it, the reader rather goes with the flow, opens up to be inspired, lets his or her mind go wandering. And never forget that literature is written to entertain (Brecht stressed this side of liteature very much).
      A couple of years ago we have been to Dublin on Joyce’s tracks. We loved it 🙂 And now I just read about Joyce in Knausgaard’s new novel “Kämpfen” (which I read in German). He writes quite cleverly about Hamsun, Faulkner and Joyce (about Joyce page 452ff. in the German edition).
      Anyway, wishing you a GREAT weekend, I will now disappear to our garden

    • Well, we agree. There are loud and silent ghosts, subtle ones and toughies. They just reflect the different human characters. And we Bookfayries can been seen as subtle, well educated and clever ghosts.

    • Ich schreibe jetzt mal deutsch, weil ich mich auf etwas beziehe, das ich gerade in Deutsch lese. Karl Ove Knausgaard widmet in seinem neuen Roman “Kämpfen” den ganzen zweiten Teil “Der Name und die Zahl” (ab S. 437) der Bedeutung der Namen. Es geht um die Namen in der Literatur bei Hamsun – namenlos bleibt der Held in “Hunger” – Thomas Mann und Joyce, die beschreibende Namen benutzen, Faulkner, Celan und einigen anderen. Der Name ist ja ein Unterscheidungsmerkmal. Er ist so etwas wie die Visitenkarte “nomen est omen”, aber auch etwas Magisches, etwas, das andere nicht wissen dürfen wie in der Literatur von Nixen, beim Schwanenritter und Rumpelstielzchen. Mit dem Namen wird eine Realität beschworen, er ist sinngebend. Und es ist ja nicht nur seine Bedeutung sondern auch sein Klang, wie schon Dina so anschaulich beschreibt. Den Doppelnamen wohnt schon seit eh eine besondere Würde inne wie bei Eilean Donan und dann der alte Sprachstand des schottisch Gälischen, der diese Würde noch erhöht.
      Das nur als kleine klügelnde Anmerkung.

    • Ich mag Deine klügelnden Anmerkungen, ganz lieben Dank!Knausgard las ich auch noch nicht, also da habe ich einiges vor, denn mit Namen, ihrer Bedeutung für ihre Träger, beschäftige ich mich nur zu gern. Ein Name hat Macht. Die gälische Sprache klingt schon so magisch und sie ist so weich und klangvoll!
      Ich bleibe also dicht am Thema Namen dran, es ist ein sehr spannendes und auch schönes.

    • For us Knausgaard is be far the most clever and sophisticated writer we read for many years. He inspires, makes the reader think and transports lots of infos in his novels – especially in the 6 books of “Min Kamp”.

  7. This is the perfect place for a ghost! Water all around and what a dramatic, beautiful setting. You girls must have been very busy redirecting the traffic. 🙂 Lovely to see Dina on a photo (even if it’s only her back).
    This weekend is the major holiday weekend. As I’m allergic to the heavy traffic, I left for my stuga already yesterday. So peaceful and quiet here.

      here everyone waits for their holidays which start in about 3 weeks. Today a month-long exhibition of modern art starts here in Cley, Cley17 it’s called (well, the exhibition is more creative than its name!) – but that doesn’t cause traffic jams 😉
      Siri and Selma were VERY busy redirecting all the traffic but with Dina photographing and driving it was too a big danger for every driver on the road. They even got a BIG thank you from the local police.

    • We can tell you, our dear friend, redirecting all these tourists was quite hard work! But we had to guard our beloved Dina. She forgets everything else when photographing and therefore she needs us as her guarding-fairies.

      es ist voll lustig nach Schottland zu fahren, selbst ohne uns lieblustigen Buchfeen. Sollen wir dir als Kostprobe ein paar nette Geisterchen senden? Masterchen besorgten wir vor einiger Zeit auch ein paar Hilfsgeister, die für die Inspiration zuständig sind. Das sind zwar besonders verrückte Wesen, aber das bringt eben ihre Kreativität mit sich.

      ich war ja schon als Jüngling nach Schottland zu einer Nenn-Tante geschickt worden und war bereits mit 14 völlig fasziniert von diesem grandiosen Land. Später lebte ich für ein halbes Jahr in Elgin bei Inverness und immer wollte ich mal an der Westküste gen Norden fahren. Dass es so toll sein würde, hätte ich nicht gedacht. Wir werden sicher noch einmal dort hinfahren und besonders den hohen Norden Schottlands heimsuchen. Aber, wie schon gesagt, man muss die Ferienzeit wegen Touristen und Midgets unbedingt meiden.

      ich bin zwar leidlich fit, aber ganz und unsportlich. Schon in der Schule bekam ich es mit Hilfe meiner Mutter hin, vom Sport befreit zu sein. Also ob ich mich zum Sherpa eigne, wage ich zu bezweifeln. Meine Fähigkeiten liegen eher im plaudernden Flanieren oder in der Unterhaltung bei den Bergwanderungen, wo ich zusammen mit Siri & Selma die schönsten Rastplätze finde.

      eine Fitbit habe ich nicht. Allerdings hatte ich – weil ich neugierig war – mal so einen Activity Tracker vom Discounter. Klar, der kann nicht so viel, aber um mal abzuchecken, ob das war für mich ist, war der ganz gut. Während der ersten Wochen fand ich das interessant. Ich liebe Kurven, Diagramme, Auswertungen (wenn man es messen könnte, interessierte mich sogar die Zahl der Läuse, die mir über die Leber … ach nee, andere Baustelle). Spannend fand ich auch den Schlaf zu verfolgen, und ob es morgens eine Überstimmung der Ausschläge mit den Träumen gab. Wenn es klappte, habe ich nachts, wenn ich einen Traum hatte, im Halbschlaf die Uhrzeit notiert. Ja, manchmal habe ich mich damit dann auch gestresst und der Schlaf hat gelitten, wie ich dann auch auf dem Tracker ablesen konnte. Whoohoo, dat Dingens funktioniert ja??!
      Ich glaube, gekippt ist das ganze Interesse als ich merkte. Hoppla, ich will alles wissen, alles tracken, zu jeder Zeit. Mist, bleibt keine Zeit zum Laden des Akkus! Und so eine undichte Larifari-Auswertung … nöö, macht keine Laune. Irgendwann war der Akku leer … und blieb leer. (Muss dringend mal schauen, wo dieses Ladeteilchen gelandet ist … *hüstel*)
      Was die Motivation anbelangt, zu der es so manche:m verhilft: Ja, anfangs will man halt Daten reinkriegen und ich habe dann paar Kilometer mehr gemacht. Okay, das Ding war zu ungenau, das war unbefriedigend.
      Aber weißte was? Ich bin jetzt voll scharf auf eine Fitbit 🤣 –> 🛒 –> 💃🏼

      Ob Dir das jetzt aber geholfen hat? 😉

    • Ja, es hat geholfen, sehr sogar, lieben Dank dir. Also, so ein schickes Fitbit Blaze wäre perfekt für dich.:-) Das App präsentiert alle Infos die du brauchst, sammelt, wertet aus, zeigt dir Stärken und Schwächen. Für jemand der Motivation braucht ist es toll, man wird automatisch auf Bewegung gepolt. Fitbit zeigt dir viele Treppenstufen du steigst, wie weit du von deinem Ziel bist und überhaupt alles, was du im App programmierst. Aber deswegen brauchst du es nicht, du bist ja bereits hochmotiviert 🙂 du kannst es einfach tragen und den Kopf frei halten, Fitbit sammelt und rechnet für dich, erstellt Tag/Wochen/Monatstabellen und Kurven, Herzfrequenz, Kalorienverbrauch und viel mehr. Im App wird alles gesammelt und ausgewertet und so präsentiert, dass du nur das Ergebnisfoto dem Blog posten könntest.
      Da Klausbernd eher antisportlich, aber doch genüsslich sich nicht wenig bewegt, haben mir Siri und Selma mir leise zugeflüstert, dass solch eine Uhr möglicherweise einen Stressfaktor für die Beziehung wäre.;-)

      actually we like this humidity that’s normal for Scotland. But we had it only on the beginning of our journey. There it was ideal for us, chilly, misty and some showers. As further north we got as warmer the weather was, boring blue skies and nearly too hot for us. Nevertheless we liked the north so much that we’ll soon go up there again.

  23. Hach, Robert the Bruce und die Spinne, köstlich. Und angesichts des wunderschönen Motivs, das auf Dina wartete, wäre es kein Wunder gewesen, wenn sie nicht schon bei Loch Ness angefangen hätte zu fotografieren. Beeindruckende Bilder, die Lust machen, sich gen schottischen Norden aufzumachen.

      Loch Ness fanden wir sooo fürchterlich touristisch, umgeben vom übelsten Touristennepp, dass wir ihn quasi flohen, allerdings nicht nachdem wir bei schönsten Wetter eine längere Bootsfahrt auf dem See gemacht hatten.
      Wir finden, es wird großartig mit Glencoe, worüber wir im nächsten Blog u.a. berichten werden. Loch Ness hat noch nicht diese nördliche Herbheit, er ähnelt eher dem Lake District, wenn er auch längst nicht so schön und zugänglich ist. Als Reiseziel kann man die ganze Gegend um Loch Ness vergessen, finden wir.

    You might have given your fans something other than the back of Dina’s head though, KB!
    Bruce’s ‘spider moment’ is supposed to have happened in a cave at Lintalee, but I like your version too. If I could talk to spiders, I would tell them not to come into our house and scare Julie.

      well, like our beloved Bookfayries Dina likes to be mysterious. She is very Jewish or even Islamic in this respect. No pictures or images are allowed to be made of her, like a little goddess 😉
      The spider-story surely is a yarn as the spider was hanging on one 😉 Siri and Selma were told by Bruce that it actually took place there, but what’s space …
      We were told that spiders in the house are a sign of a good climate inside. Rationalisation?

      Usually it’s quite hard to communicate with spiders, isn’t it? But Siri & Selma learned it quite well. Now they are trying to weave a spider web net for catching mosquitoes. Since we allow spiders to have nets in some corners of our house flies are no more a problem any longer.

    • My friend (who is also an avid SK reader) and I have always laughed about his obsession with 🕷🕷🕷spiders. We find them funny-silly as giant protagonists. 🕷🕸 The end of “It” was a letdown for us both.

Wenn ich das hier so betrachte, bekomme ich wieder Hoffnung … Nachdem wir die Cinque Terre gesehen haben, schien mir jedes (für uns erreichbare) Reiseziel nicht mehr ganz so reizvoll, nicht die Mühen einer Reise wert. Klar, man darf halt nicht immer vergleichen, dann geht es glücklich weiter. Die Cinque Terre als Maßstab lässt sich dennoch schlecht abschütteln. Die Fotos hier nun zeigen, da könnte ja noch etwas auf uns warten, das meinen überhöhten Erwartungen gerecht wird.
    Wirklich schöne Aufnahmen. Das helle, vom Wind bewegte Haar, gefällt mir auch gut als Vordergrund.
    Hihi, habe gelacht, bei der Stelle mit dem Verkehr umleiten. Jaaa, so muss das!!

    Weiter so! Macht Spaß.
    Tschaui – die olle Flummi gibt mal wieder Gas und schwingt sich aufs Rad 🚀 (dochdoch, Emoji passt!)

    • Naja, liebe Marianne, es gibt noch Vieles Schönes auf der Welt. Neben dem hohen Norden Schottlands hat mir die NO-Küste Grönlands gut gefallen und auch Jan Mayen und Svalbard, die Fjorde Norwegens und …
      In Schottland kommt Natur und Kultur zusammen, beides gefällt uns gut. Es gibt gemütliche Hotels, du siehst mich in meinem Instagram-Konto in einem am Kamin sitzen (in Scourie, Northern Highlands), atemberaubende Sraßen und Wanderwege, Whisky Brennereien und leckeren frischen Fisch, um nur einiges zu nennen. Die baumlosen Orkneys sind voller vorzeitiger Steinsetzungen und bestechen durch karge Schönheit.
      Ich werde jetzt mal gleich zur Eröffnung der Ausstellung für zeitgenössische Kunst zu unserer Kirche schlendern. Mit dem Gas geben hab ich’s gar nicht, ich bin eher der Flamierer im Stil von Walter Benjamin.
      Dann mach’s mal gut und fall nicht vom Rad.

    • Hey, lieber Klausbernd, vom Rad geflogen bin ich erst kürzlich. Deshalb habe ich meine Fahrradklingel jetzt auf volle Lautstärke gestellt. Wenn ich spätabends vom Sport komme, freuen sich die Hauseigentümer an unübersichtlichen Knotenpunkten, kann man doch die Uhr nach meinem lauten Klingeln stellen.
      Yep, das Bild mit dem Kamin habe ich gesehen. Habe es später Mike gezeigt und wir waren uns einig: passt perfekt zu Klausbernd. 🙂

      längst schon wollte ich einen Beitrag dazu schreiben, wie ich zum Sport kam (der langweilige Arbeitstitel “Von der Dickmadam zur Hobbyathletin” 😉 ). Vermutlich werden es mehrere Beiträge. Eure Frage will ich in einem dieser geplanten Beiträge beantworten). Habe Antrieb bekommen, aus den losen Fäden im Kopf eine erste schriftliche Struktur herauszuarbeiten. 💃 (Ihr werdet ein leises Glöckchen hören, sobald das online geht

      Aber wisst ihr, worauf ich jetzt gerade Lust habe? Zum Trimm-Dich-Pfad zu rennen! Dort habe ich vor nicht langer Zeit eine Hangelstation entdeckt. Kennt ihr bestimmt: Sprossen oder Stangen, an denen man sich voran und zugleich aufwärts hangeln kann. Endlich kann ich es wieder und fühle mich wie ein Kind, das ständig hin will, um sich erneut daran zu erproben; aus einer Lust an genau dieser Bewegung heraus. Ich liebe dieses ganz spezielle Gefühl, wenn die Muskulatur geschmeidig wird und zu arbeiten beginnt. Die einzelnen Muskelstränge geradezu in ihrer Bewegung zu fühlen, eins mit diesen zu werden. Ich liebe das Gefühl, wenn die Mind Muscle Connection gelingt – das hat fast etwas Erotisches. Easier geht kaum noch.

      Yep, das “Bemühen um” Fitness finde ich auch nicht soo attraktiv. Ist aber, meiner Erfahrung nach, anfangs nicht zu umgehen, falls man lange nicht aktiv war. Ist trotzdem nichts, wofür man sich schämen müsste, ganz im Gegenteil! 🦉

    • Das will ich glauben, von wegen Bild der Freiheit. Jedes Mal nämlich, wenn ich mit dem Rad losfahre, setzte ich seit dem Unfall einen Fahrradhelm auf. Und es ist ein äußerst unangenehmes Gefühl, weil die Haare nicht mehr im (Fahrt-)Wind flattern. Der Helm kommt ja eh einem Kopfgefängnis gleich. Anfangs bekam ich Nackenschmerzen, weil sich alles in mir gegen diese Einengung sträubte. Aber der Unfall war einfach zu krass und ich will meinen Schutzengel ja nicht überstrapazieren.

      Also, Du liegst mit Deiner Entschleunigung sicher nicht verkehrt und wohltuend für die Mitmenschen ist das auch. Dina hat das ja schon schön in Worte gefasst. 👍

    • Na ja, Dina, mit dem Fahrrad fahre ich ja vor allem deshalb, weil ich immer zu faul bin, das Auto in der Garage freizuschaufeln – es stehen alle Fahrräder davor. Und weil alle Fahrräder davor stehen, hat mein liebes Masterchen zu beiden Seiten der Motorhaube alles mit einer Decke und einer alten Badematte abgedeckt, damit es keine Kratzer auf dem nachtblauen Lack gibt. Poooohh … Dann müssten die Helme noch beiseite geschafft werden. In der Zeit bin ich längst mit meinem Fahrrad hin und zurück gesaust. 😉

      (Waaaas? 👀 … 🤔 … da bleibt mir ja die Spucke wech!! Habe mir gerade vorgestellt, dass ich ohne Fahrrad meinen Einkauf immer laufend erledigen müsste. Mit Laufrucksack. Oh nee, angenommen, ich holte einen Becher Sahne, so wäre die längst zu Butter geschüttelt, wenn ich zuhause ankäme.

      Hey Klausbernd, hör mal … Das mit dem Radfahren ist gar nicht schlimm! Für unsere Tochter hatten wir früher ein Schatten(!)rad (herrlich, oder?), damit habe ich sie immer mitgezogen. Würde ich Dir anbieten bei einer gemeinsamen Radtour. Oder, noch besser: so ein kleiner Fahrradanhänger, der wie ein kleines buntes Zelte ausschaut, mit einem federnden orangefarbenen Fähnchen nebendran. Du würdest drinsitzen, dich in philosophische Texte versenken und ich würde Dich durch die Gegend gondeln. Na, da biste platt, wa?! (Solange es kein Reifen ist, alles gut) ☀️ 🌳 🌻 Bringt bestimmt viel Spaß! Dina und Konrad fotografieren das alles und schon sind alle glücklich.)

    • Wir können da jedoch eine Ausnahme empfehlen: Die hervorragenden Bücher von Karl Ove Knausgård. Er schrieb ja 6 Bücher über sein Leben und besonders die letzten beiden Bände sind ausgesprochen lesenswert. Die Schilderung des Alltäglichen fast genau wie bei Proust, die mit philosophischen und literaturtheoretischen Reflexionen verbunden werden, bilden einen sehr lesenswerten zeitgenössischen Roman. Der viktorianische Roman ist ja ein Schwelgen in vergangenen Zeiten. Er hat viele Gesichter vom moralischen “Vanity Fair” bis zu den wunderbaren Abenteuern der kleinen Alice. Dickens finde ich heute eher etwas langatmig, naja und die Bronte Sisters …
      Ich habe mich da missverständlich ausgedrückt. Ich liebe nämlich – zusammen mit Siri – postmoderne Romane z.B. Don Lillo, de Vigan & Co. Ich kann sie genießen, seitdem ich mein Leseverhalten oder meine Leseeinstellung änderte. Man muss nicht alles verstehen, man muss die auch nicht von vorne bis hinten lesen. Man nimmt sich heraus, was einen erfreut und liest genau, wo man spontan innehält und aufhorcht. Es ist im Grunde die Widerspiegelung der durch Entfremdung partikularisierten Welt im Gegensatz zur ideologischen Einheit der Viktorianer. Für mich ist da Brecht in seiner theoretischen Schriften einer der Ersten, der diese neuartige Rezeption in seinem epischen Theater erkannt und ausgedrückt hat.
      Um nochmal zu Knausgård zurückzukommen, kann ich besonders den Bd. 6 “Kämpfen” sehr empfehlen, in dem meinem Gefühl nach die Grenze zwischen Roman und Sachbuch aufgehoben wird.

    It’s almost thirty years since I was in up there, and the bits you visited seem not to have changed at all. Dina really put those iron grey skies to great effect, she brings my own trip back as though it were yesterday. Beautiful and inspiring.

  52. So you clever fayries can speak to ghosts AND spiders, such talent! I wish you would whisper to the spiders in my house and ask them nicely to stop creating so many cobwebs! So nice to see Dina in the photos, even from the rear she looks gorgeous, and she’d better watch out because KB’s photos are excellent! I had to look twice to see who the photographer was. Now I am wondering what images Siri and Selma would produce: I assume Dina’s talent must be rubbing off on all of you. I have not been to Eilean Donan castle, it does look so lovely and in such a picturesque location. Scottish castle are very different to English and Welsh ones.

      here in our house we can practise our Spiderish every day. But this is only one side of the coin the other is the action side. Spiders are VERY stubborn, they don’t follow what they are told. We have to be very VERY dictatorial and then they may follow.
      I, the dear Selma Bookfayrie, like to take photographs as well. I learned it from our beloved Dina, but my pictures are that subtle that human eyes can’t see them.

  54. Where do I start? I’m Maren and what I have found here is soooooooo beautiful!!! And funny! I’m preparing my first visit to Scotland next spring and found your post by chance, searching for travel tipps and information. I come from Denmark and my English is not very good, but alright, so I’d love to learn Spiderish. 😉 Actually we wanted to visit Scotland this autumn, but this is too late, all booked. Amazing. How did you get to Scotland, did you take a ferry? Can’t wait to get started now. I adore your stylish signature on the photos!

      We went by car to Scotland (we live in East Anglia) and can recomment this. We drove up North the English motorway heading for Glencoe (you’ll read about in our next post) and from there going west we passed by Eilean Donan and took the bridge to Skye, where we stayed a couple of days hiking in the mountains and visiting a Whisky destillery :-). From Skye we took the ferry to Lewis and went up north to Harris to take the ferry to Ullapool on the mainland, where we followed the NC500 (actually we took the “wee-mad-road”, which is absolutely magnificient, a little detour from the MC500). In John O Groats we took the ferry to the Orkneys. We can very much recomment this tour! But booking the hotels early is absolutely necessary. Make sure to book a stay at the Scourie Hotel. You can see a picture of our Master sitting there at the fire place on his Instagram account #klausberndvollmar

    • We have been in Snowdonia a couple of years ago. We liked it too, ideal for hiking, but not nearly as magnificient as northern Scotland. In Scotland’s north everything is bigger but nevertheless the mountains are mostly higher in northern Wales. The rest of Wales we found quite boring. We know this places that very well as we wrote a book and made a film about special places in the UK many, many years ago. We got payed by the publisher and production company to travel all around the UK for 8 month. We loved it!
      Why don’t visit both Wales & Scotland?

    • Not often did my publisher pay such journeys because actually I am not a travel writer, although I wrote about my journeys around England and about my expeditions to NE Greenland, Jan Mayen and Svalbard.
      As you see, I and the rest of the Fab Four we like to go to the North, we would not even think about St. Lucia.
      We need rain, mist, a cold breeze – which we hadn’t in Scotland’s north this time.

  59. I loved this castle. It was open when I visited. I think the owners may still vacation in it periodically as there were modern bedrooms and family photographs. There was also a bit of whimsey in the downstairs, with model food laid out as though dinner preparations were under way and a fabulous moving diorama that featured some ships and a relative of Nessie. It is magnificent to look at in the Highland light with the water and calls up fairies and ghosts and…Monty Python. Thanks for showing the tour!

      We haven’t been in the castle although is was open, as we usually find the exhibitions of castles with old swords etc. boring. But the diorama there must be very special as we heard later. The only castle we visited lately was Lindisfarne castle. It was a problem getting Siri & Selma out again. They wanted to move in immediately.

      das hört sich vielleicht blöd an, aber wir haben allmählich von diesem “schönen” Wetter genug. Immer blauer Himmel und Sonnenschein ist völlig langweilig und nervig. Wir können uns gar nicht mehr daran erinnern, wie sich Regen, Nebel und kühler Wind anfühlt. Und verhangener Himmel hört sich prima für uns an. Wir gießen schon seit einiger Zeit unsere Pflanzen mit dem Badewasser und Abwasser.

      we really love this castle, actually we could move in immediately 😉 🙂
      I always liked to photograph photographers at their work. It’s fun and on another level is photography reflecting itself, quite post-modern. Anyway these pictures came into our blog as Dina had problems with a broken memory card. So I had to help out with pictures taken with my iPad and a much smaller camera.
      Here in Cley is the first weekend of a big art exhibition Cley17, sponsored by Eastern Arts and many other institions as well as the EU. There are a lot of visitors exspected and I will be one of them watching Coastal Change, a big multimedia show. I suppose Siri & Siri will come along as well.
      Dina is still in Norway and will come back in 10 days.

      unfortunately it’s their secret how they do it. They seem to have a huge network including historical ghosts. We, that is Dina and me, are never ever being allowed to watch them communicating with ghosts, elves, witches and even gods and semi-gods. Even bribing them with doubeling their pocket money doesn’t work.

    • Oh dear, so many! Let’s start with Saladin because Dina, Siri & Selma and me would VERY much to meet his ghost too. But not that easy because Siri and Selma told us, we had to go to Damaskus. It’s easiest – at least for beginners – to go to places where this person died. So we decided Simon de Beauvoir. Much easier to go to Paris, but, oh dear, we don’t speak French (we know Siri & Selma don’t speak any French either). Maybe Sir Richard Burton is the easiest. We have to go to Triest and he speaks English – AND we have the first revised English edition (1879) of his book “A Pilgrimage To Maccah, And Medinah” in our library. Books sometime build up a connection to the ghost-world. We’ll ask Siri & Selma.
      Anyway, Siri and Selma promised to try to build up a connection to Sir Richard Burton. Keep your fingers crossed, please.

  86. This is a lovely castle. I have visited a few castles in Germany, as well as rode a boat past many more, when I lived there as a member of the U.S. Army. The United States is a youngster, compared to European countries, but we have some castles here as well. I have seen one in Berkeley Springs, West Virginia, and a couple in the Thousand Islands region of New York. The one I like the most here in the United States is Boldt Castle in the Thousand Islands region.

      we know the German castles pretty well, as we use to live in the Rhine valley and we visited the Bavarian castles of crazy Ludwig as well. We love castles and especially those mediaval castle, even if most of them are ruins only. We suppose you saw lots and lots of castles cruising the Rhine (especially the middle Rhine – a world heritage region).
      We have visited the neo-romantic Boldt Castle as well (when we lived in Canada for some years). It’s quite modern but it is situated similar to Eilean Donan, except the wild surroundings of the Highlands are missing. But we didn’t know that are quite some modern castles in the US.

  89. Dreamy photographs, Fab Four of Oslo 🙂 The image of Dina in my mind, trying to capture photos while driving is hilarious, and I sure hope she does not do it too often! Oh but the sight of Eilean Donan makes me sigh. My photos from the Isle of Skye trip were nothing great because I used some terrible effects at the time to take them. As a result, I look at them now and want to redo the entire lot! Your photos are just perfect.

      well, Dina drives too often like this and our beloved Fairies have to warn the other cars on the road. Quite a job (but it brings extra pocket money).

      you are absolutely right, without Siri and Selma helping to answer the commentaries we couldn’t do anything else. But they like to answer comments and even quite often sneak in our Master’s office and answer pretending being him (when he is unsuspecting working in the garden). Well, one reason for doing this is getting more pocket money.
      It’s a pity that you didn’t really see Eilean Donan but you may come to western Scotland again. We keep our fingers crossed for you.
      We will go there again as well as we want to go up north again and then stay for a while on the Orkneys in winter. We need a real winter and there is hope to have winter as winter can be. All the time we go up north on the west side of Britain we pass by Eilean Donan.

    • Oh dear, why’s that?
      Winter is so GREAT with clear cold weather, wind, snow (we love snow very much) and ice. For us it’s all fun. Last winter we escaped to Norway. The winters at the North Norfolk coast are much too mild for us and we miss the snow sooo much. Therefor we move up North every end of the year – sometimes even as far as NE Greenland.
      But you went to Alaska. We suppose in summer.

      there were quite some movies filmed at Eilean Donan. It all started with “Bonnie Prince Charly” in 1948, the two best known movies filmed there are “Highlander” (1986) and the James Bond film “The World is Not Enough” (1999). More than 10 films are shot at least partly there. One could think it’s a Hollywood setting but it’s real. But one could think that as well of the castles of Ludwig II in Bavaria like Neuschwanstein.

      coming Friday it goes on up to the North.
      You have to be quick visiting all these great places of Scotland before they get too touristy. The road to Scotland’s North, the NC500, was voted by photo-journalists from National Geographic and other magazines the second most beautiful road in the world after the Atlantic Highway in Norway. Of course this draws a lot of tourists. Most of the tourists we met were Americans and Germans, but we never had the feeling that it was touristy. At most of the places we were on our own.

    • Scotland had like all European countries a long histories. For a long time the Picts wrote history by troubeling the Romans so much that they built Hadrian’s Wall in the end. Okay Roman time is not that log ago, but the Picts go back much longer in history. Later there were fights of the clans and the Scottish uprisings against the English.
      The Scottish people have always loved their freedom and knew how to fight for it.
      Scotland is really worth visiting, not only for its scenery but for its people and culture as well.

      To go to Eilean Castle from our coast would take two days. Well, we have a lady living in Cley she does it in one day but this is stressful. From our coast to the Scottish border is on day relaxed driving.
      As we wrote before we find Scotland is worth visiting, very much so! We loved it and especially the north coast and the Western Isles. At Eilean Donan you are more or less at beautiful Skye.
      We hope you and your son are well and enjoying the summer as well. We have an extraordinary fine summer this year: sunny and warm. So we have lots and lots of cherry plums and tasty apples. Our figs seem to be ripe soon as well. Tomorrow Dina is coming home from Norway. We hope that the weather will hold – although we would need some rain for our garden.

      ja, diese Dudelsackmusik – well, Dina und ich sind nicht gerade ein Fan davon. Loch Ness ist fürchterlich touristisch – gar nicht einsehbar, denn nicht besonders attraktiv – und dort hat man nirgendwo seine Ruhe vor Dudelsackmusik. Wir wollten entspannt in der Nähe des Sees draußen zum Eisessen hinsetzen und schon kam solch ein aufdringlicher Dudelsackspieler. Wir glauben, die spielen so lange, bis man sich von ihnen freikauft.
      Aber keine Bange außer am Loch Ness wurden wir nie von dudelnder Dudelsackmusik geplagt. Zum Glück war es sonst immer fein ruhig.
      Dina wird heute Abend nach Hause kommen. Siri und Selma und natürlich ich auch sind schon ganz aufgeregt. Große Freude! Sie war ja viel zu lange weg.

      eine Skandinavienumrundung, das hört sich doch auch gut 😊 an. Ich, Kb, machte das einmal als Kind 👶 mit meinen Eltern und später als 👨‍🎓 Student. Beide Male war ich begeistert. Den Norden Schottlands finden wir genauso schön. Wir könnten sogleich wieder losfahren.

  108. What an awesome castle, Eilean Donan! But I am sorry to read that the ghost was gone. I am sure you did your best to lure him back, though. Fun that you found spiders instead. I just wonder, what language do they speak? And then I can’t get my head around why the all so nice vikings weren’t popular at Eilean Donan…

      it’s a shame that our dear old Vikings weren’t popular, we can’t understand that neither.
      The spiders speak common Spiderish, an ancient language only in writing, without phonetics. Unique is its net like grammar, a little bit like in the strict agglutinating languages like Finnish. Ignorant folks call there written words cobwebs. Siri and Selma communicate with spiders by writing on the walls. Unfortunately we have to paint our walls ever so often.

      oh dear, our dear Master got it wrong. The writing on the wall is spider-mail only. We have a chat with our spiders with the help of threads, like a cats cradle. Spiderish is a so called Thread-Language. Just to make that clear.

      if you will visit Skye then it’s just on the way, as it is on the way if you go up to the north coast of Scotland (up the magnificent west coast). The best month to visit Scotland is May (we went in May) because it’s the driest month and youhave no midgets there and not much tourists neither.

    • Sorry, ich habe leider erst jetzt deinen Kommentar entdeckt. Das lag wohl daran, dass wir Ende November im Urlaub waren.
      Also Hugendubel ist eine gute Einstiegsadresse. Als Hugendubel nocht nicht von Ariston übernommen worden ist, habe ich einige Bücher dort veröffentlicht. Gratulation!
      Lass uns doch bitte wissen, wann dein Buch mit welchem Titel dort herauskommt.

    wir planen für nächstes Jahr im Mai eine Rundtour durch Schottland. Wie habt ihr das eigentlich gemacht? Hattet ihr euch eine / oder mehrere Ferienwohnungen gemietet?

    • Liebe Susanne,
      für eine Rundtour durch Schottland benötigt ihr mindestens 4 Wochen, zumindest wenn ihr die schönsten Stellen sehen möchtest. Je weiter ihr nach Norden kommt, desto atemberaubender wird die Landschaft und uns gefielen auch die Orkneys sehr gut. Wir wohnten stets für eine oder zwei Übernachtungen in schönen Hotels, die ihr aber im Norden spätestens um Weihnachten gebucht haben müsst. Sehr gemütlich ist das Scourie Hotel in Scourie/Nordschottland. Nur auf den Outer Hebrides blieben wir ein paar Tage in einem B&B bzw. auf Lewis in einem Hotel. Wir sind ja zuerst über Glencoe, ein Muss, zu den äußeren Hebriden gefahren und dann von dort fast täglich immer weiter gen Norden. Ihr könnt auf den Straßen nicht so schnell fahren und so fuhren wir gemütlich selten über 200 km tgl. Von einer Ferienwohnung würde ich abraten, wenn ihr eine Rundfahrt plant. Dazu sind die Entfernungen zu groß. Wir können die Nebenstraßen der MC500 sehr empfehlen, bes. die Wee Mad Road.
      Da habt ihr etwas Tolles vor, das euch sicher gefallen wird. Ach ja, GAAAAANZ wichtig, unbedingt vor Mai diese Reise zu unternehmen, da euch sonst die Midgets den Ferienspaß verderben können. Außerdem ist es im Sommer in Schottland erschreckend touristisch.

      Wir haben gerade bei unserem Morgenkaffee eure Fotos von Schottland bewundert. Sehr, sehr gelungen. Sie machen uns noch mehr Lust auf Schottland. Auf der ITB haben wir uns ausreichend Prospektmaterial mitgenommen, um unsere Reise zusammenzustellen.
      Jetzt erkunden wir aber erstmal bei strahlenden Sonnenschein den östlichen Wedding. Der kommt bei unseren Erkundungen immer etwas zu kurz und ich stehe schon mit gezücktem Skizzenbuch in der Hand vor der Tür.

      wir sind nach unserer Fastenwoche nun wacker im Garten zu gange, um mit unseren Gärtner ein neues Gartenlayout durchzuführen. Mehr modern, zeitgeistig, wie er meint, der die Geschichte der Gärten ausführlich studierte. Jetzt wird’s geometrisch klar, alles auf die Sichtachsen des Hauses ausgerichtet.
      Wir werden sicher auch mal wieder in den Norden Schottlands fahren. Es ist nordische Romantik an sich. Aber auch die Hebriden sind schön. Auf unserer letzten Schottlandreise hatten wir keine Zeit für längere Wanderungen eingeplant, aber die würden sich auf den Hebriden sehr lohnen (auf den Spuren Mendelsohns 😉 )
      Auf jeden Fall könnt ihr euch auf eure Schottlandreise sehr freuen.

      das Fasten haben wir munter und fröhich überstanden. Danke der Nachfrage, wir schreiben gerade einen Blogbeitrag dazu.
      Klar, Ihr könnt auch von Cley über Kings Lynn die Ostküste hoch zu den Farne Islands fahren, was wir stets am ersten Tag machen, wenn wir gen Norden fahren. Dann von dort durch den grandiosen Glen Coe nach Eilean Donan. Von da die Brücke nach Skye nehmen und dann mit Hilfe der kleinen Autofähren Inselhopping machen (Lewis & Harris), um dann bei Ullapool auf die NC500 und Wee Mad Road fahren. Das ist allerdings nicht gerade die kürzeste Strecke, da Cley im äußersten Osten und die Outer Hebrides und die NC500 im äußersten Westen liegt. Dennoch seid ihr herzlich willkommen bei uns.
      Es kommt ja auch darauf an, welche Fähre ihr von euch aus nehmt. Wenn ihr übrigens kein Linksverkehr gewohnt seid, ist es leichter mit einem deutschen Auto zu fahren als eins mit Rechtssteuerung zu mieten. Auf den engen Nebenstraßen der MC500 im Norden haben fast alle Besucher vom Kontinent Probleme mit Rechtssteuerung, da ihr kein Gefühl für den linken Fahrbahnrand habt.

    • Lieber Klausbernd, das hört sich auch gut an. Mal schauen, was wir machen. Micha hat leider nur vier Wochen Urlaub am Stück.
      Man könnte auch von Berlin ach Manchester fliegen und dort ein Auto leihen und die Tour starten. Wir könnten zu euch fahren, dann die Küste hoch und so wie du vorgeschlagen hast. Manchester hat uns die Dame von der itb vorgeschlagen. Dann nach Cley und die Ostküste Englands in vier Etappen hoch. Für jede Etappe haben wir Tourvorschläge erhalten.
      Jetzt gehen wir erstmal zum Espresso Konzert ins Konzerthaus.

      ich glaube fast, wir lassen uns selber überraschen 😉
      In Berlin ist das Wetter auch herrlich, wir werden uns es heute gut gehen lassen. Wir wollen heute zum Tiergarten fahren und spazieren gehen. Mit der U-Bahn sind wir von mir aus in gut 5 Minuten im Tiergarten 🙂 Ein Vorteil der zentralen Wohnung 🙂

I had to look it up… I was there on at this castle on July 4, 2017, two days before you (or before your post was made), after having spent a few wonderful days on Skye where, according to family history, my umpteenth great-grandfather Hugh MacKenzie left Scotland for North Carolina in the late 1740s. It is a beautiful place. Northern Scotland is wonderful.

  129. I did the Great Glen, if I remember well, i went not far of this Castle – Weather was not so good and I continue the trekking. Sure i’ll go back one day walk again this way.
