Yellow Mellow

It was a boring day for us Bookfayries. Our dear Dina and Master were cleaning obsessively our kitchen and did the washing. We didn’t feel like helping them. Sitting in the garden we got the idea to practice fairy magic. We conjured away all the colours but this looked quite bleak. But then we took Dina’s camera and used the Fujifilm ADV filters. We played with them and without needing any photoshop tricks we changed our world. That’s like looking through coloured glasses.

Heute war es uns Buchfeen voll langweilig, da Dina und Masterchen wie besessen unsere Küche putzten und Wäsche wuschen. Ihnen zu helfen hatten wir nicht die geringste Lust. Im Garten munkelnd kamen wir auf die Idee, uns im Fabenzaubern zu üben. Zuerst zauberten wir alle Farben weg, was wir jedoch trostlos und langweilig fanden. Dann schnappten wir uns Dinas Kamera und spielten mit den Fujifilm ADV Farbfiltern herum. Das ist so, wie die Welt durch die berühmt-berüchtigte rosarote oder eine andersfarbige Brille zu sehen und man muss nicht mit Fotoshop oder anderen Progammen herumfummeln.

We banned all colours into the realm of shades of grey except one. We liked yellow best. Our Master told us that the painter Franz Marc saw yellow as the colour of joy and even Goethe (our Master can’t help quoting him) called yellow heartwarming. This reminds us of what we learned in our fairy school. The skin of women in old Egyptian murals was painted yellow to express their erotic. Not that you think they were infected with jaundice. The illustrator Aubrey Beardsley shared this view of the erotic yellow and published “The Yellow Book“. We would call this soft porno which marked the beginning of his fame. Because of these erotic connotations, the church banned yellow as liturgic colour. This made yellow for us an interesting colour to play with.

Also wir verbannten alle anderen Farben ins Reich der Grautöne bis auf eine. Irgendwie gefiel uns Gelb am besten. Masterchen erzählte vor einiger Zeit, dass Franz Marc Gelb als Farbe der Freude und Goethe (dass Masterchen den immer zitieren muss) sie als herzerwärmend bezeichnete. Da erinnerten wir uns, dass wir in der Feenschule lernten, dass die gelbe Haut der Frauen in ägyptischen Wandmalereien Erotik ausdrücken sollte. Nicht dass ihr gar denkt, die hätten alle Gelbsucht gehabt. Der Illustrator Aubrey Beardsley teilte diese Ansicht, dass gelb erotisch ist, und gab mit “The Yellow Book” einen Band von Softpornos heraus, der ihn berühmt machte. Wir meinen, dass wegen dieser erotischen Assoziationen Gelb aus den Kirchen als liturgische Farbe verbannt wurde. Und genau das macht sie für uns gerade interessant, um ihr herumzuspielen.

Initially, our dear Dina and Master enhanced our love for the colour yellow. Both admire the Dutch still lifes of the 17th c. Back then, the painters mixed their pigments and tried hard to mix a bright yellow. This was long before the invention of cadmium yellow which is the brightest yellow and was therefore much liked by the Impressionists.

Ursprünglich haben uns Dina und Masterchen auf Gelb gebracht. Beide schwärmen nämlich für die holländische Stilllebenmalerei des 17. Jh. Damals, als man sich noch die Farben selber mischte, haben sich die Maler gerade um eine leuchtend gelbe Farbe bemüht. Das war vor der Erfindung des Cadmiumgelbs, als das am stärksten leuchtende Gelb, das von den Impressionisten so geliebt wurde.

We don’t need to mix our colours in bowls anymore as the Alchemists did and don’t want to mess up our kitchen again. We use the inbuild colour filters in Dina’s Fuji camera. There we liked yellow best as it looks quite graceful in combination with the shades of grey.

Wir müssen nicht mehr wie die Alchimisten Farben in Schälchen mischen und unsere Küche wieder versauen, sondern wir benutzen die Farbfilter in Dinas Kamera. Von allen Farben, die wir einstellen konnten, fanden wir den Gelbfilter am tollsten, da Gelb und die Grautöne, in die die anderen Farben verwandelt wurden, am besten für unseren feinen Feengeschmack harmonisieren.

  2. I’m aware of The Yellow Book and even took some volumes of it out of the library in the 1990s. It’s news to me, however, that the Church once banned yellow due to its erotic suggestiveness. Your photographs are reminders that two botanical gifts from the New World to the Old are goldenrod and sunflowers.

      there are no yellow paraments in the catholic church. The church has a special relationship with colour. It tries to monopolise the meaning and use of colours.
      Thanks for telling us that sunflower and goldenrod come from the New World. We didn’t know this and always looked at the sunflower as typical European. Especially Siri and Selma love sunflowers. When we lived in Germany they had a custom in a little town nearby that people went with their sunflower to the market place to award the person with the highest sunflower.

    • Sunflowers grow natively across much of North America, including right here in Austin (Texas). Early European visitors took some of the plants and seeds back to their own countries, where they bred them for larger and larger heads, like the huge ones that Van Gogh painted. The wild ones here don’t look like that but still have their natural charm (for example https://portraitsofwildflowers.wordpress.com/2020/06/12/sunflower-king-of-the-prairie/).

      actually, Dina and our beloved Bookfayries got really into it on our trip to London a couple of days ago. It makes street photography really interesting. But we will write about it in our next post. These pictures are taken in our garden except for the last one. That was taken on Cley allotments.

      why don’t you count grey as a colour? We have to admit we all love many shades of grey. On the other hand, grey doesn’t appear as a colour in these pictures. It needs the grey to enhance the yellow but the yellow doesn’t enhance the grey in these photographs.

    • I had always heard that black was not a colour, but that it was the absence of colour. But you’re right, gray would have to be called a colour even though it is much like black, because it has other colours added to it. But anyway, it does enhance the yellow in the photos, for sure.       that was the idea of the Impressionists that black is the absorption of light and white the reflection but not a colour. If you paint a surface than black as white are colours.
      Colours are absorption and reflection of certain wavelengths of light.

    • Dear Mary,
      yellow was used to create a perspective in paintings in the middle ages. Before the line perspective was developed painters used to cover everything in the foreground with a translucent yellow. You could do this with watercolours, we suppose.

  10. Dear friends,
    your garden look different with only the striking yellow. Actually, that’s a lovely effect and great reason to stop, look and take in all the colours around us.
    Just recently I was invited so see a newly refurbished kitchen and it was all very contemporary in white and grey – apart from one wall which was painted in bright yellow. It looked stunning. My friends had seen something similar abroad and decided to go for it. What they had seen in Italy was a huge kitchen with one wall in shocking pink, I saw photos of it and wanted to have the same immediately colours! 🙂 the reason my friends went for yellow in the end was because of all the kitchen gadgets in yellow and did their best to find a matching colour for the wall.

      London was absolutely great! In comparison very empty. We never had the feeling that we got too near to people. It was a great fairy excursion with Dina and Masterchen.

  12. The reduction of distracting colours creates an amazing effect. The soft muted yellow tone is my favourite colour for our interior when it comes to bed linen, towels, blankets, cushion, carpets.
    Apart from that, I must say I feel terribly sad seeing the yellow sky in the western part of the USA.

      yellow has two poles as any colour. There are happy yellows and yellows which are negative symbolising poison and decay especially when a little green mixed with yellow.

    You might not believe this, but I just painted the outside of my mirror in bright yellow. 🙂 A friend told me there’s been a massive outbreak of canary yellow in homeware – we’re seeing it everywhere. I was told to team it up with pink and blue. Which I didn’t. I’m a big fan of yellow – it goes with everything and it’s a really happy colour. So I’m going with Goethe and Masterchen on that one.

Feels like magic, yes, modern days alchemist. Interesting with the church ban on yellow. Had not heard about that one before. Take care, friends.

      the catholic church has its own ideas about colours. One book of mine was not distributed by a churchy distributor because they had different ideas about colours. The church has these paraments with changing colours through the year. There is no yellow.

      everything means something 😉
      Movements of yellow cars seem to be much faster than they actually are moving. That was the idea of Italy when choosing yellow for its international racing colour.
      Every colour has a long history of symbolism and art. Of course, as a photographer, you are part of this history and stand in this tradition. This is important for how recipients see your pictures. We never see with a naive eye.

    I am very happy to see you have found a creative way to pass the time in virus plagued year. Your pictures have given the subject matter a much different appearance than ordinary color or black/white photos would. I especially like the third picture, as it reminds me of my grandmother’s backyard, as it looked when I was a child.

      thank you! We are very well and keeping away from people. We stay in at weekends when the tourists are here and enjoy our garden.
      We were astonished too how much it changes the atmosphere of a picture just with one prismatic colour and the rest black-and-white. You immediately see the object of the photograph differently. It’s like the alienation effect in writing and in art in general. And it’s fun to take such pictures.

  22. Dearest Siri & Selma – yellow has always reminded me of warmth, good times and sunshine. I am so glad that you wrote about yellow today for our sun has turn red under a cloud of smoke. I did not know how much I would miss yellow, even though my favourite colour is red (although only as an accent) I am glad you mentioned Aubrey Beardsley and Franz Marc – the more I learn about them, the more I realize how much they gave to art and the creative story. I love how you were able to bring out these marvelous “grey and yellow” photos. Brilliant!!! And I laughed out loud when you said that your Master couldn’t help but quote Goethe!!!       Siri 🙂 and 🙂 Selma have had their special moments. They went out to see their friends Hildi and Hulda and told us to send you greetings and fairy dust from them.
      Yellow is the representative of light and is, therefore, a light and happy colour. Goethe based all of his scientific writing on polarity. He saw polarity as one basic law of nature. In the realm of colour, he saw blue and yellow as polar. For him, blue is the coloured representative of darkness and yellow the coloured representative of light. In a way, light and darkness are fighting and this produces different colours. Goethe’s explanation of blue and yellow: If you look through a cloudy medium towards the light you will see yellow, therefore we see the sun up in the sky yellow. If you look through a cloudy medium towards the darkness you will see blue. That was Goethe’s explanation of why we see the sky blue.
      Thank you very much for this Goethe quote. I suppose it’s taken from his “Theory of Colours”. It was the first time that somebody wrote about the psychological effects of colour – as you see in this quote.

      you got it right, this is goldenrod (solidago). It’s doing very well at the south-facing flint wall to our neighbour.
      The editing was done in the camera, no photoshop or other software.

  28. I think the fairies have caught an interesting interplay between yellow as a color and yellow as a representation of light. It shows particularly in the last two photos (both stunning). I love the idea of photographing light. And of course, yellow is a fine color…

  29. Hi Klausbernd and All of you. I really enjoyed your post and as well all the comments and discussion about Yellow. I have learned quite a lot from all the comments. Actually your use of color filters inspired me to toy with that idea, so thank you for your great post. On another note I had bought two bunches of sunflowers today, because I was drawn to the color yellow. I will use them as my next photography project. Have a great weekend

    • Dear Klausbernd and The Fab Four of Cley thank you for your kind reply. Well some years are better for sunflowers and some are not, mine didn’t real come in this year. The One’s of my photography project were store bougt, it will take a little while to get them posted. Thank you for asking, I am in a safe area away from those fires, although I had ashes on my car and some tables inside, yesterday for the first time in 2 weeks, the sky was blue again. These fires are so devastating and I can’t even fathom what people have to go through. Have a great Sunday and an inspiring week.

      thank you very much for liking our photography. Yellow pops up. It’s the colour that jumps on you. It doesn’t want to stay in the picture. Therefore it’s seen as the colour of communication. The effect is enhanced when set against shades of grey.

  31. Lovely post and I like the yellow and grey also, even though I’m not a lover of yellow in clothes or decorating.
    I’ve read that yellow stimulates the brain and therefore should be used in schools. Interesting.

      indeed, yellow stimulates the brain and communication. It’s the ideal colour for offices as well. Except for Siri 🙂 and Selma 🙂 we don’t wear yellow neither but the walls of our living room were painted in a white broken yellow, a mellow yellow. Now they are light grey. That it shows every bit of dirt clearly is the disadvantage of yellow.

  32. You two are hilarious. Great job with the yellow, however, and the bit of history that went along with it. Next time I look at Egyptian art, I’ll pay more attention. Like you, my favorite was the sunflower! Thanks for providing a bit of sunshine on a dark, smoke filled day. I think I will hike down in our canyon and photograph the leaves that are turning yellow! –Curt

  36. Despite years in the Church, I’d never heard that yellow was a proscribed color. Perhaps European Catholics have a different view of things than Lutherans! In one of the congregations I was associated with, a favorite song during Communion was “Here Comes the Sun” — with all the cheeriness the yellow sun brings with it. The photos are wonderful. I’ve always wished to have a bedroom done in dove gray, white, and citron. Now, I have gray walls and white woodwork — I’m 2/3 of the way there!

      the Roman Catholic church has set ideas about colours. It’s all about the paraments for different times of the year.
      We also have light grey walls and white woodwork in our living room with a yellow sofa, rocking chair and cushions and in our library with grey and white as well we have it combined with red, a red sofa and red cushions. We painted some of our rooms just last year. Before both rooms had light yellow walls. The problem with yellow is that it shows every stain and defect quite clearly.

    Ich mag den Farbfilder in meiner Canon auch sehr gerne, tendiere jedoch immer wieder dazu, rot zu selektieren. Eure Gelb-Bilder inspirieren mich da richtig.
    Ich habe zwei volle Wochen vor mir, in denen ich viel unterrichte und mich (und meine Folien für die Präsentation) updaten muss.

      Rot ist einfach kontrastreicher, denke ich, während das Gelb der Wäsche wie ein Stück Natur ausschaut, es passt so harmonisch zu den Grautönen.

    • Liebe Susanne,
      meinst du mit ‘kontrastreicher’ die möglichen Kontraste innerhalb der Farbe?
      Für mein Verständnis ist ja der Kontrast von einem mittleren Gelb zu den Grautönen größer als von einem mittleren Rot zu Grau. Oder liege ich da falsch?
      Ich liebe diese Kombination Gelb zu Grau. Die Kombination Rot zu Grau ist in der Fotografie ja häufig benutzt worden. Aber, wie gesagt, wir werden demnächst auch unsere Studien zu Rot mit Grau hier darbieten.
      Wir müssen jetzt aufräumen, da der Garten von Ästen, Blättern und Obst nach dem schweren Sturm übersät ist. Hier kenterte selbst ein mittleres Schiff vor der Küste. Zum Glück konnte die Besatzung per Hubschrauber gerettet werden.

    • Vielleicht ist der Kontrast doch auch eine persönlich Empfindung? Ich meine, wenn man die Regeln der Optik und der vielen Farbregeln außer acht lässt? Ich weiss es nicht. Ich habe nochmal bei Itten im Buch zum Simultan-Kontrast nachgeschlagen. Wenn gelb und grau aufeinandertreffen, dann addiert das Auge in den dunklen, schwarzen Flächen, Violett dazu, bei grau und rot ist es grün. Aber was sagt und das zum Hell-Dunkel Kontrast, den du meinst?
      Rot – Grau ist für mich einfach härter, das rot springt dich an. Es scheint nicht zum Grau zu passen. Während das Gelb sehr harmonisch mit dem Grau aggiert.

      jetzt habe ich beim Kaminausräumen noch einmal über das Problem mit den Kontrasten nachgedacht. Ich glaube, du hast Recht. Der Kontrast ist nicht zuletzt eine persönliche Empfindung.

      das ist ja ziemlich kompliziert mit den einzelnen Kontrasten. Beim Simultankontrast wird das Violett beim Gelb addiert und Grün beim Rot. Ich denke mir, diese Kontraste wie auch Orange zu Blau sind alle gleichwertig. In der Literatur fand ich dazu nichts. Ist nun Violett zu Grau weniger kontrastreich als Grün oder Orange zu Grau?
      Betrachten wir die Gegenübersetzung Gelb – Grau als Qualitätskontrast, der sich als bunt-unbunt-Kontrast zeigt, dann weist jede Primärfarbe, und manche Farbtheoretiker sagen auch Grün, zu Grau, Weiß oder Schwarz den gleichen Kontrastwert auf. So wurde es zumindest im Bauhaus, Itten & Co, gesehen. Der größte Kontrast hier ist der Hell-Dunkel-Kontrast, eben Gelb zu Grau, der größer als der von Rot (oder Blau) zu Grau ist. Um in unserem Fall den Kontrast von Gelb zu Grau noch zu erhöhen, könnte man das Gelb warm tönen und das Grau kalt oder umgekehrt.
      Anyway, Itten unterscheidet ja 7 Konraste, wobei die 5 anderen sich auf die prismatischen Farben des Farbenkreises beziehen. Die Farbenlehre wird immer kompliziert, wenn bunte und unbunte Farben aufeinanderstoßen. Subjektiv ist für mich die Kontrastwirkung von Gelb zu Grau größer als von Rot zu Grau, aber eine objektive Begründung kann ich nicht geben.
      Dann arbeite fein. Ich denke, das Unterrichten gefällt dir doch sicher. Ich habe beim Unterrichten oft erst erkannt, was ich wirklch verstanden haben und was ich nur oberflächlich wusste.

      Danke für deine ausführlichen Gedanken zu den Farben und deren Kontraste. Ich verstehe dein Interesse an Farben sehr.
      In Neapel habe ich viel mit meiner Kamera gespielt und auch die Filterfunktion verwendet. Die Fotos habe ich mir nochmals angeschaut. Es macht Freude zu sehen, wo überall rot oder gelb versteckt ist. Komischerweise habe ich nur die beiden Farben bei der Selektion verwendet.
      Im Moment bin ich gerade weniger aufmerksam.
      Ich habe heute meinen Blog von Premium auf Business umgestellt und nun Probleme mit der Performance im Blog und bei der Bearbeitung der Beiträge und leider fehlen im Jahr 2009 die Bilder zu den Blogbeiträgen. In der Mediathek sind sie vorhanden. Ich habe schon den Kundenservice angeschrieben aber eine Antwort erhält man erst innerhalb 24 – 48 Stunden. Mal schauen, ich glaube noch nicht daran, dass ich eine Antwort erhalte, die mir gefällt.
      Liebe Grüße auch an Hanne, den Kalender verpacke ich morgen und sende ihn auf die Reise. Mit dem Versenden zu euch wird es jetzt auch komplizierter, da England bald nicht mehr zur Europäischen Union zählt. Ich schwanke noch, ob ich den Kalender unversichert senden sollte, denn die Versicherung kostet 10 Euro Aufschlag.
      Das Unterrichten hat mir Spaß gemacht. Da liegst du richtig 🙂 ! Ich finde es auch klasse, soviele Mernschen mit gleichem Interesse kennenzulernen und mich mit ihnen auszutauschen.
      Nach dem Beantworten meiner Blogbeiträge werde ich ins Bett gehen und lesen. Die Wahrscheinlichkeit ist groß, dass ich dabei einschlafe.

    • Liebe Susanne,
      wir haben heute begonnen, mit dem Gutenberg-Editor von WordPress unsere nächste Post zu entwerfen, die wir wohl noch heute veröffentlichen werden. Zuerst gab es einiges Fluchen, aber jetzt geht es uns ganz gut von der Hand. Wir sind jedoch nur Premiere Kunden dort, da wir über unsere Seite nichts verkaufen wollen. Wir hatten bis gestern alles mit dem alten Editor gemacht und Gutenberg völlig negiert. Plötzlich heute Morgen war unsere Seite auf Gutenberg umgestellt. Wir haben etwa drei Stunden gebraucht, um den neuen Editor für das zu benutzen, was wir benötigen. Er läuft sehr gut bei uns mit Firefox, schlechter mit Safari, und sehr gut mit Grammarly für Firefox, allerdings mit dem Dudenkorrektor lässt er sich wohl nicht kombinieren, was aber wahrscheinlich am Duden-Programm liegt.
      Bei unserer nächsten Post wird es wieder um Filter gehen. Sei gespannt.

    • Lieber Klausbernd, liebe Hanne,
      ich habe vom premium zum business Tarif gewechselt. Das war schon lange in meinem Kopf, da ich gerne plugins und den paypal Button verwenden möchte. Das gab viele Probleme jedoch muss ich sagen, dass die hotline von WordPress bisher alles wieder in Ordnung gebracht hat. Da ich seit 11 Jahren blogge, war das Jahr 2009 plötzlich bilderlos. Formate ändern sich. Es wurde alles von WordPress korrigiert.
      Euren rot-grauen Post habe ich mir gerade angeschaut, schön ist er geworden. Darf ich das Wort schön überhaupt gebrauchen 😉
      Heute habe ich einen vollen Tag vor mir.
      Als erstes werde ich meinen Vater besuchen. Mein wöchentliches Zeitfenster ist Montag 11 – 12 Uhr. Es ist graulich, wie mein Vater darunter leidet, nicht mehr uneingeschränkt Besuch empfangen zu dürfen. Manchmal glaube ich, die Einsamkeit ist für ihn schlimmer als die Covid-19 Krankheit. Was natürlich nicht stimmt, für ihn wäre Covid-19 wahrscheinlich tödlich.

    • Guten Morgen, liebe Susanne,
      danke, dass du Dinas London-Bilder schön findest. Es ist witzig, dass du das Wort ‘schön’ in Frage stellst. Unser Masterchen bereitet nämlich gerade ein Podcast zur Schönheit vor, das auch wieder in Vancouver produziert wird. Sein Podcast über Farbe kommt übrigens heute heraus. Wir werden morgen hier darüber berichten und die Links anführen.
      Ja, die Einsamkeit. Wir leben hier von ziemlich alten Herrschaften umgeben, nicht wenige über neunzig. Da ist die Gruppe, der das Alleinesein nichts ausmacht, die sich in ihre Hobbies Literatur, Filme, Musik etc. vertiefen und froh damit sind und die andere Gruppe, die unter der Einsamkeit leidet. Man kann das ja selbst hier bei unseren Blogger-Gemeinde sehen, die einen fühlen sich gut, dass sie keine sozialen Verpflichtungen und nur wenige direke Kontakte haben, die anderen leiden darunter.
      Hier nimmt das Ansteckungsgeschehen stark zu, so bleiben wir fein zu Hause und gehen höchstens einmal zum Meer. Face-to-Face-Kontakte haben wir fast gar nicht mehr, hatten wir aber auch vorher nicht so viel.

    • Ich bin gespannt auf den Beitrag zur Schönheit, Klausbernd. Eben habe ich mich mit meiner Professorin getroffen, die meine Masterarbeit bereut hat. Sie will nächstes Semester ein Seminar zur Häßlichkeit halten. Bestimmt auch sehr interessant.
      Interessant, dass ihr beide euch angesichtlich ganz auf euch selber zurückzieht. Jedoch habt ihr über das Netz soviele Kontakte, dass man euch nicht qals kontaktlos bezeichnen könnte. Passt weiterhin gut auf euch auf 🙂

    • Guten Tag, liebe Susanne,
      das ist ja witzig, nach dem Podcast über die Schönheit werde ich eins über die Hässlichkeit machen (und dann eins zur Sprache der Symbolik).
      Wir kommen uns ganz und gar nicht isoliert vor. Mir scheint es, dass wir mehr tiefere oder bedeutungsvollere Kontakte als je zuvor haben. Die oberflächlichen Konakte haben stark abgenommen, was ich überhaupt nicht bedauere, da sie eh nur Zeitfresser sind. Eigentlich haben wir alle Zeit der Welt, die wir jedoch dennoch sinnvoll nutzen wollen (und sei es nur für Blödsinn 😉 )
      Mir gefällt das Medium Podcast sehr gut und Rebecca Clanmother produziert die Podcasts mit ihrem Mann Don hochprofessionell. Die haben ein ganz tolles Tonstudio. Du siehst, ich bin begeistert. Ich bewundere, dass Rebecca stets den Zeitgeist trifft. Ich glaube auch, dass Podcast das neue Medium ist. Alle Plattformen sozialer Netzwerke haben in diesem Jahr die Möglichkeit geschaffen, Podcasts einzubinden und Amazon bietet seit neuesterm in Prime auch Podcasts an. Zumindest hier im englischsprachigen Bereich gibt es einen richtigen Hype in Bezug auf Podcast, besonders im Lernbereich.

    • Lieber Klausbernd,
      auf die Häßlichkeit freue ich mich besonders, ich werde den Link meiner ehemaligen Professorin weitersenden.
      Das Medium Podcast ist tatsächlich sehr im kommen, lese ich immer wieder im Netz. Ich denke, es ist ein gutes Medium, weil es wie ein Radio funktioniert, nur dass man sich aussuchen kann, wann man den Bericht hört.
      Ich werde heute weiterhin die Farbe von unserer Treppe abbrennen und Podcast oder Hörbücher dabei hören. Das macht die Arbeit erträglicher.
      Passt auch ihr gut auf euch auf, die Zahlen steigen ja extrem an, in Berlin haben sie sich so stark erhöht! Lt. der Corona-App auf meinem Handy hatte ich noch keine Risikobegegnung. Ich versuche auch, Menschenansammlungen zu vermeiden.

      ich denke mir, dass du die beiden toll bebilderten Bücher von Umberto Eco zur Schönheit und zur Hässlichkeit kennst.
      Ab Montag werde ich beginnen, erst einmal mein Podcast zur Schönheit vorzubereiten. Ich habe auf meinem Schreibtisch schon einige Zettel mit Ideen gesammelt.
      Ich werde neben Lesen mich auch heute handwerklich betätigen. Da wird ein altes Tischchen für unsere Bibliothek als Ablage aufgearbeitet. Bei so etwas wie auch bei der Gatenarbeit höre ich ebenfalls Hörbücher. Gerade höre ich die Krimiserie, die die Rowling unter dem Namen Robert Galbraith geschrieben hat. Unterhaltsam, aber nicht so einfallsreich wie Harry Potter.
      Dinas und mein Corona App. zeigen auch keinen Kontakt mit Infizierten an, aber wir bewegen uns selten von unserem Grundstück weg. So verwundert uns das nicht. Außerdem gibt es an unserer Küste fast keine neuen Ansteckungen seit Wochen, jedoch im übrigen UK und speziell in den Großstädten sieht es übel aus.

    • Lieber Klausbernd,
      Ja, 😁ich kenne die Bücher von Eco zur Schöneheit und Häßlichkeit. Ich bin, wie schon gesagt, gespannt.
      Gestern und heute habe ich den Text für die Stadtteilzeitung Steglitz geschrieben. Nur 4.500 Zeichen lang durfte ich der Frage nachgehen, ob Künstler*innen Systemrelevant sind. In der Kürze liegt die Würze, es war jedoch sehr schwer aber ich bin zufrieden.
      Beim Renovieren habe ich verschiedene Podcasts gehört: von der bbc in 6 Minuten Englisch lernen, vom Monopol-Magazin den Kunstpodcast und vom Deutschlandfunk den Podcast Tacheles. Alle sehr interessant, am meisten hat mich die neuste Folge vom Tacheles zum Denken angeregt: „Aus der Pandemie lernen – Wie geht es nach Corona weiter?“ Den kann ich dir empfehlen.
      Ansonsten höre ich auch meistens Krimis, wenn ich Hausarbeite 😉
      Bei uns in Berlin sieht es auch schlimm aus, so wie in den anderen Großstädten Deutschlands und Europas + England. Die Menschen sind zu dicht beieinander. Die Infektionszahlen sind Schreckenszahlen, die jeden Tag mehr in die Höhe steigen.
      Micha und ich machen jetzt Feierabend mit Renovieren und sitzen beide mit einer leckeren Tasse Kaffee vor unseren iPads.

      danke für die Tipps bezüglich der Podcasts.
      Wir halten uns von jeder Menschenansammlung fern, was hier jedoch leicht ist. Bis jetzt noch gehört die North Norfolk Coast zu den Gebieten mit den geringsten Coronazahlen in Europa neben einigen Gebieten Finnlands. Das Problem ist jedoch, dass nun viele Leute hier her kommen. Die Situation Einheimische gegen Corona-Touristen spitzt sich zu. Im Nachbarort Blakeney wurden schon Londoner verprügelt.
      So ein komplexes Thema wie die Systemrelevanz von Kunst mit 4500 Zeichen abzuhandeln, ist schon schwierig, hilft aber seine Gedanken zu konzentrieren und sich zu überlegen, was wirklich die wichtigen Punkte sind.

      bei uns gibt es auch gleich Kakao mit selbstgebackenen Kokoszitronenkuchen und dann wird unsere Alexa programmiert, die wir in Sigune umbenennen wollen, falls das geht.
      Hier ist es ungemütlich herbstlich: Nieselregen und kalt. Es ist der erste Tag diesen Herbst, dass wir unsere Heizung angestellt haben.

      ich habe immer mal wieder daran gedacht, Texte zu diktieren, sei es, um auf Reisen meine Gedanken in einer Art Tagebuch festzuhalten, sei es, um mir bei meinen Blogartikeln die Tipperei zu ersparen, aber ich kann einfach nicht mit einer Maschine reden. Seltsam, oder? Vielleicht ich ja doch noch mal dazu, denn es waere bestimmt sehr zeitsparend, bei meinem “4-Finger-Suchsystem” im Schreine auf der Tastatur.

      P.S. @ Klausbernd: Alexa haben wir nicht, und sie kommt mir auch nicht ins Haus, weil ich nicht will, das Amazon bei uns mithoert, und Siri [auf Marys i-Phone] bzw. Bixby oder den Google Sprachassistenten auf meinem benutzen wir nicht. “Alexa” haben wir ein einziges Mal aufgerufen, und dabei haben wir dann herzlichst gelacht. Da kam folgender Dialog zustande:
      Ich: “Hallo Alexa!”
      Sie: “What can I do for you?”
      Ich: “I have no idea?”
      Und sie floetet mit suesser Stimme zurueck: “Don’t worry! I’m here to help you!”

    • Ich stelle mir beim Diktieren immer vor, zu wem ich spreche. Besonders gerne diktiere ich mir Texte in meine Notizen über das Handy. So ist mein Einfall schnell festgehalten. Angefangen habe ich in Afrika, da habe ich mir Sprachnachrichten diktiert, die musste ich aber erst abtippen. Nun spreche ich direkt in den Editor. 🙂 Das spart sehr viel Zeit und das iPhone ist perfekt dafür.

      ich habe mit dem Diktieren größere Probleme, denn ich kann weitaus besser und konzentrierter schreiben als sprechen. Falls ich Ideen diktiere, muss ich sie immer zeitaufwändig bearbeiten, da schreibe ich lieber eine Idee in Stichworten auf. Ich habe jedoch einen Freund, der fast alles diktiert, aber, wie gesagt, meine Sache ist das nicht. Für plötzlich auftauchende Ideen habe ich stets Zettel und Stift dabei – sehr old style 😉

      Zuerst habe ich das Diktieren auch abgelehnt. Aber die Technik ist so weit fortgeschritten, dass mein iPhone meine Stimme immer besser interpretieren kann. Ich diktiere in den Notizen, die in der Cloud liegen und die ich auch an meinem Stand Mac Rechner aufrufen kann.
      Vorzugsweise diktiere ich beim Spazieren gehen. Es sind Gedankenstützen, damit ich die Idee nicht vergesse.
      Ich diktiere auch WhatsApp Nachrichten. Also Textnachrichten, ich bin nicht immer eine Freundin der ellenlang gesprochenen Nachrichten.

      als Autor ist man da anders. Ich vertraue mehr meinem Schreiben als meinem Sprechen. Das Einzige, wofür ich die Diktierfunktion nutze, ist, wenn ich etwas mehr oder weniger auswendig lernen möchte. Dann diktiere ich eine schriftlich ausgearbeitete Form, um sie mir bei der Hausarbeit und beim Autofahren immer wieder anzuhören. Alles andere schreibe ich auf entweder in der Notizfunktion meines Taschentelefons oder auf ein Stück Papier.

      ich könnte mir vorstellen, dass Diktieren etwas für dich ist. Du hast doch in deinem früheren Leben stets reden müssen vor der Klasse. Dagegen habe ich, meist etwas schriftlich darstellen müssen, außer bei den Vorträgen, aber das ist etwas anderes.

      genau das ist ja der Unterschied: vor der Klasse hatte ich ja Personen vor mir sitzen, und eben nicht nur ein Geraet. Ich muss einfach nochmal probieren, ob ich mich damit anfreunden kann. Und wenn ja, dann muss ich mal die ensprechende Software genauer anschauen und lernen, damit umzugehen.

    • Erstaunlich, wie gleich wir uns sind. Mein Unterrichtsstil war ebenso dozierend und als ich dann an der Uni unterrichtete, war das angemessen, in der Schule für die Schüler wohl eher langweilig.

  40. I love the colour yellow and I am always so pleased to see the first cheerful yellow flowers of spring. Bright yellow flowers for spring and softer yellow for autumn. I really enjoyed looking at all Siri and Selma’s photos; the grey and yellow set each other off so nicely.
    How I wish I could be a Book Fayrie and play in the garden instead of doing the cleaning and the washing! 😀

      and even our dear Bookfayries complain sometimes …
      Siri 🙂 and 🙂 Selma love yellow. The other day we have been shopping in Norwich and found little yellow backpacks for them. They carry them prodly with them wherever they go.

    • We are sitting all together in our library with cups of hot drinks. Dina is editing pictures, Selma 🙂 is drawing funny pictures and Siri 🙂 and our Master are reading about the Arctic. In comparison to the weather there, it’s quite cosy here even outside.

  41. A wonderful and interesting post as always fab four. I loved the yellow of your images – more importantly though the images themselves would be lovely no matter how you chose to portray their colors. It’s important to have an excellent composition as your starting point! I am embarrassed to admit I’ve not used this feature of my Fuji although I’ve done similar work using Photoshop. I have a question for Dina though – when you use the color filtered effect in-camera, is it possible to see the full-color image in post processing or are you stuck with the single-color only effect once you’ve used it? Thanks as always for your thought-provoking commentary and beautiful images.

      indeed, the picture has to be well composed before you fiddle around with the colours. Colour effects only can’t make a picture interesting.

      herzlichen Dank für deinen Kommentar. Es wäre schon eine Schande, wenn in der Natur das Grün fehlen würde. Aber hier geht’s um die Wirklichkeit der Bilder und nicht um die Wirklichkeit der Natur. Da hat uns gewundert, wo überall das Auge der Kamera Gelbtöne entdeckte. Du hast Recht, wenn alles voller Farben ist, geht die einzelne Farbe unter.

  45. It’s another fun and interesting post! 🙂 The opening lines about being bored watching you work made me smile, that was very believable. I wasn’t aware of the erotic connotations of yellow; thank you for that information. The in-camera experiments are interesting. The laundry looks like it is aspiring to be in Christo’s world – very cool. 😉 My camera has similar filters to the Fuji – I should play with them more often. Let’s raise a glass to experimentation…and have a good week!

      yellow was even the colour of prostitutes in the late middle ages when it was the colour of all outsiders. As yellow never lost this connotation ‘outsider’ it was hardly ever the colour of fashion, except in the very end of the 19th c. and in the 21st c. following the motto ‘everything goes’.

  47. Auf dem Handy scrollt man sich die Finger wund, so viel Kommentare wieder 😃
    Das Thema Farben, speziell gelb, leuchtendes Gelb, taucht wieder auf. Da hast du ja ein Buch geschrieben, Bernd.
    Ich erinnere mich an die Briefe van goghs, aber da ging es so glaube ich um ein bestimmtes Grün.
    Asger Jorn schien gelb zu lieben.
    Ich bin eigens vor Jahren zweimal 2h 45 min nach Bonn gefahren, ganz allein, um großformatige Leinwände von Jorn dort zu sehen.
    Gern erinnere ich mich.
    Das war noch eine Zeit, in der mir Kunst maximal viel bedeutete.

    • Lieber Gerhard,
      entschuldige bitte, dass ich jetzt erst antworte, aber da war so viel zu beantworten auf Rebeccas Seite und unseren Blogs, dass ich den Überblick verlor.
      Es ist natürlich van Gogh, der mit Gelb assoziiert wird. Und fragt man dann weiter, dann werden seine Sonnenblumen erwähnt. Es ist so ähnlich wie mit Blau und Yves Klein.
      Wir hatten hier lange Zeit die Wände unseres Kaminzimmers gelb gestrichen. Allerdings war das nicht ideal, denn einmal ist gelb sehr anfällig, jedes Spinnwebe und Schmutzpartikelchen fällt auf und Gelb ändert sich stark bei verschiedener Beleuchtung. Deswegen war es auch im Modedesign lange Zeit eine eher unbeliebte Farbe. Unter unterschiedlichem Licht kann es von Grau bis grünlich wirken, was man natürlich im Design nicht will.
      Dennoch muss ich sagen, dass ich große Leinwände monochrom Gelb toll finde.

    • Ich habe selbst eine konkrete Plastik geschaffen, gelb angestrichen. Dass sie schmutzanfällig ist, ist nicht zu übersehen.
      Sie steht im Garten und ist vergleichsweise groß.
      Über Asger Jorn hatten wir uns mal unterhalten, weisst Du noch?
      Ich bin eigens wegen seinem Gelb damals allein 2h45 min ins Bonner Kunstmuseum gefahren.

    • Klar doch, lieber Gerhard, ich kann mich noch an deine Erwähnung von Asgar Jorn erinnern. Ich schaute den gleich bei Wikipedia nach, da er mir unbekannt war.
      Du machst also auch große Skulpturen. Ich liebe Skulpturen im Garten, aber leider ist unser Garten skulpturenfrei.
      Die Sonne kommt gerade heraus, da geht’s ab in den Garten, Fallobst aufsammeln.
