173 years ago today, a masterpiece of literary history saw the light of day: “Moby-Dick” by Herman Melville. A book we love and that takes us on an adventurous journey with Captain Ahab and the legendary white whale time and again. We love the symbolism and power of this story. “Moby-Dick” is much more than a book about a whale, it is an epic chase after dreams, obsessions and the unknown. And a large portion of madness makes it so exciting.

To celebrate the day, we are going on holiday. Traditionally, for Klausbernd’s birthday, which falls shortly after the birthday of “Moby Dick“, we go somewhere we haven’t been before. This also means that we will indulge in laziness and take a blog break. The computer stays at home, where it feels most comfortable.

We will be travelling to the south coast of England. Will we see a white whale on our trip? Unlikely. But we have Klausbernd, the birthday boy, and a good portion of curiosity in our luggage – and that’s enough for us. Hanne-Dina, the granddaughter of a Norwegian whaler, has everything prepared and we are ready for all kinds of weather. Most importantly, we are really, really looking forward to our autumn holiday.
We don’t know how long we’ll stay, but as long as we like. We wish you a most pleasant time too and see you then
The Fab Four of Cley

Hope you have a wonderful birthday, Klausbernd and take lots of photos, Dina.
(I am also descended from whalers and have a copy of Captain Copping’s diary from the time he ran away to sea at the age of 11 to the time he retired from whaling. Fascinating reading. About 99 foolscap pages if I remember rightly).

Have a wonderful time at the south coast!
I like Moby Dick as well. I always thought that Ahab had a brain tumour; he has the symptoms.

“Obsessionen”, klingt gut. Have a lovely holiday. I have just returned from Ethiopia and Somaliland, although it was not really what you might call a ‘holiday’. I love Moby Dick, the greatest of novels. Once, many years ago, I taught an abridged version of the book to Sudanese boys who had never seen the sea. They called Moby Dick the ‘big white fish’ and I wasn’t inclined to correct them.

Here’s a bit of birthday/holiday amusement for you. A local bookshop sells bookmarks with some creative punctuation. They say, “Call me, Ismael.”

My dear friends,
I hope you have arrived safely and are enjoying the south of England.
Love the photos, Dina-Hanne. You make the stones on the beach look like mountains with clouds, utterly beautiful.
Herman Melville’s leviathan tale of a vengeful whaler versus a great white whale is one of my all-time favourites. I’m almost tempted to travel to London in January to see the spectacular Norwegian-French stage production;

Maybe we can meet up in London for a couple of days?
Have a lovely vacation and many happy returns to Klausbernd.

It took me a glance or two to notice the UCM instead of ICM 😂… I was thinking how hard it would be for me to get ICM that was so sublime! Those are great images, Dina, and perfect construction of this post in that you are a granddaughter of a Norwegian whaler and chasing after the epic photos (dreams) that may be similar to the obsessions of the unknown as in “Moby-Dick”! This is why I love photography (and viewing photography). I hope the holiday went well, along with Klausbernd’s birthday 🙏🏻!
