This is a sculpture to our taste. We see a reader because reading is Kb’s favourite pastime. Not while standing, but comfortably in his rocking chair. But reading is reading… Dina, Siri and Selma also need reading like others need their coffee.

Das ist eine Skulptur ganz nach unserem Geschmack. Wir sehen hier einen Leser da Lesen Kbs Freude und Lieblingsbeschäftigung ist. Nicht im Stehen, sondern gemütlich im Schaukelstuhl. Aber Lesen ist Lesen … Auch Dina, Siri und Selma brauchen das Lesen wie andere ihren Kaffee.

The sculpture “Sound II” is often knee deep in water as the Crypt routinely floods.

This figure entitled ‘Sound II’ is a work by Sir Anthony Gormley. It has stood silently in the Crypt below Winchester Cathedral since the late 1980s. During the rainy months, the mysterious sculpture can often be found holding water in its cupped hands (for us it’s holding a book as it was dry), silent in contemplation as the level rises around it to cover the stone floor. We were hoping to see the sculpture flooded. Selma is rethinking about practicing different fairy-magic the next time and blames Siri for being too lazy …
We like the combination of contemporary art and Gothic architecture. Almost two thousand years separate and connect them.

Diese Figur mit dem Titel ‘Sound II‘ ist ein Werk von Sir Anthony Gormley. Sie steht seit den späten achtziger Jahren schweigend in der Krypta der Kathedrale von Winchester. Ist das Wetter regnerisch nimmt sie Wasser in ihren beiden geöffneten Händen auf, was wir jedoch als Gestik des Lesens wahrnahmen, da alles trocken war. Der Steinboden wird dann geflutet und das Wasser zu ihren Händen geleitet. Wir hätten das gerne gesehen.
Selma überdenkt ihre Feenmagie und möchte beim nächsten Besuch andere magische Beschwörungen versuchen, um das Wasser in der Figur steigen zu lassen. Ansonsten wirft sie Siri vor, zu faul zu sein ihr zu helfen, weswegen hier alles trocken ist.
Uns gefällt die Verbindung von zeitgenössischer und gotischer Architektur. Fast zweitausend Jahre trennen und verbinden sie.

No water in the Crypt! There is a tube mechanism through the body, so when the water rises it fills his cupped hands.

We saw this sculpture when we went to Winchester and the New Forest for Kb’s birthday at the end of last year. We were delighted to have an unexpected snowfall that time. Tomorrow, we are going to Hanne-Dina’s birthday party at the Cairngorms in the Scottish Highlands, which is called ‘Britain’s Arctic’. Unfortunately, the weather forecast predicts rather spring-like temperatures. So we will make ourselves comfortable in the hotel and read by the fireplace.

Wir haben diese Skulptur gesehen, als wir Ende letzten Jahres zu Kbs Geburtstag nach Winchester und in den New Forest gefahren sind. Zu unserer Freude hatten wir damals unerwartet Schnee. Morgen fahren wir zu Hanne-Dinas Geburtstag zu den Cairngorms in den schottischen Highlands, die auch ‘Britain’s Arctic’ genannt werden. Der Wetterbericht sagt leider eher frühlingshafte Temperaturen voraus. So werden wir es uns im Hotel gemütlich machen und am Kamin lesen.

On the way north, we pass a giant figure, Gormley’s ‘Angel of the North’, which is clearly visible from the motorway. It is seen by an estimated 33 million people every year due to its proximity to the A1 and the East Coast Main Line.

Auf dem Weg nach Norden kommen wir an einer riesigen Figur vorbei, dem ‘Angel of the North‘ von Gormley, der von der Autobahn aus gut sichtbar ist. Er wird jährlich von geschätzt 33 Millionen Menschen wegen ihrer Nähe zur Autobahn A1 und der East Coast Main Line (Haupteisenbahnverbindung) gesehen.

We will now take a blog break until the beginning or middle of February, as we will have a proper holiday.

Wir werden nun eine Blogpause bis Anfang oder Mitte Februar einlegen, also echte Ferien mache.

  6. This sculpture is so beautiful and its story too. I loved so much. I haven’t read a book by standing. But I remember one of my philosopher friend told me one day, “…(especially while reading a philosophical) a book, you should’t be in comfortable chair, read on a chair, You should be awake,… and not relaxed.   10. I like the work of Gormley. I remember when he had many figures displayed at the top of tall buildings around London. Enjoy your time away, and a very Happy Birthday to dear Hanne.

  13. Ihr Lieben in Cley, ich kann mich gut an die schöne Kathedrale in Winchester erinnern, jedoch nicht an die hier beschriebene Sound II Skulptur von Sir Anthony Gormley. Sie sieht wirklich aus, als ob sie lesen würde und ich beneide euch schon ein bisschen, dass ihr noch so gute Augen habt und es auch sehr oft tun könnt!:)
    Auf jeden Fall wünsche ich euch erstmals eine ganz tolle Auszeit mit vielen neuen Erfahrungen und Dina wünsche ich alles Gute zum Geburtstag.

  19. To me there is a delightful marriage twixt the elegant modern sculpture and its historical surrounds! Somehow it fits so well together. And, naturally, may one take this opportunity to hope for a ‘in-all-ways’ wonderful birthday for Hanne 🙂 !

  30. Die Skulptur ist wirklich sehr anregend. Sie liest und liest und liest und lässt sich von nichts dabei stören. Bewundernswert.

    Ich wünsche Euch gute Ferien und immer eine bequemere Möglichkeit zu lesen als ausschließlich im Stehen 😉

  32. Sir Anthony has really the captured the ancient history of this cathedral! I think the cathedral and original church site dates back at least 1300 years and this sculpture adds to that ancient presence! I’m not sure you really want to visit in a flood or indeed on a dark night! 🙏🙏🙏🙏

  55. The Fab Four 👱🏻‍♂️👩🏻‍🦳🧚‍♀️🧚 is really after my heart: reading and coffee. Is there a more comfortable feeling than having both on a cold Saturday morning (or any morning!)? There is something beautifully electric about the Sound II sculpture—a silent strength enhanced by its seemingly contemplative contemplation of time (and of us—what to make of us these days). I like the idea of it holding a book, but what a sight it must be to see it holding water in its cupped hands. Beautiful, moody photography adds to the feeling of the words you wrote. I can see how this is a perfect stop to your trip to the Cairngorms in the Scottish Highlands ~ it puts the mind in the right frame for an adventure.

      This is now my life: Lying on the sofa reading and drinking coffee. But after ten days it gets boring. But in another ten days I am allowed to use my two feet again – at least for a little time. Everyday life with the use of only one foot is quite yogic sometimes.

      Indeed, this sculpture in the silence of the crypt is powerful. It inspires a meditative attitude. We were lucky, when we were there we were the only ones.

    • Yes, I can feel for you about being unable to get out due to an injury – but it shows truth in the statement: absence makes the heart grow fonder… it works with nature and the feeling of freedom to get out and explore. It is excellent news that you will be up and exploring again on your two feet by spring (hopefully, the weather on March 20th agrees to make it a spring-like day). Cheers to a healing Sunday!

    • Thank you very much for kind words and wishes, dear Randall. Fortunately, I am quite comfortable with Dina, Siri and Selma’s care and with piles of interesting books. Of course, I miss going out and even moving freely around the house. Indeed, the absence makes the heart grow fonder, especially as we have beautiful weather right now. Frost in the mornings, then sunshine the whole day long.

Nun, der Schnee muß für Wasserspiele erst wieder schmelzen… Vom Titel her und nur das Bild betrachtend war meine erste Assoziation: Der liest in einer Beschreibung des alten Bauwerks oder sucht auf einem Plan, wo es jetzt hingeht (später hinzugefügt: eventuell nach den Toiletten…). Denn wer kann schon lange so stehen und lesen, etwa “Offene See” von Myers.
