In other words… as Klausbernd wrote today “Ignorance is bliss”, often qouted in England (correctly quoted: “Where ignorance is bliss, ’tis folly to be wise.” (Thomas Gray)).
Is this really true? Does lack of knowledge bring happiness? Are we more comfortable when we don’t know something? π
Anyway, it’s a perfect introduction to my next post about Susanne Haun’s work. She ist the artist behind Oscar Wilde, I love this portrait of him. Thank you Susanne, for sharing your artwork so generously with us all. Have a great weekend everybody!

As to your question, I think knowledge and intelligence are a bless and a curse, one which, if you are (in my view) fortunate enough to have, you cannot possibly give up, regardless of the ramifications.
Quoting Dante Alighieri “You were not made to live as brutes, but to pursue virtue and knowledge”: I subscribe to that.

I’m not sure if ignorance is bliss or not but I think we’re at a time when we need to find our own comfort zone on how informed and how ignorant we want to be, in the age of information overload. I think we have to make intentional choices over what we need to know and what we need to ignore.

ein sehr schΓΆnes Bild .. beeindruckend, wie die KΓΌnstlerin den Ausdruck von Oscar Wilde vermittelt ..
diese Zitate und die Γberlegungen von dir bringen mich prompt dazu, ΓΌber den Sinn unseres Daseins nachzudenken π
Etwas nicht zu wissen, mag manchmal besser sein .. “was ich nicht weiΓ, macht mich nicht heiΓ.”
Aber wenn wir das Zitat von Wilde wirklich umsetzen wΓΌrden .. “They live as we all should live…” ..dann gΓ€be es ziemlich bald keine Menschen mehr auf der Welt, fΓΌrchte ich ..denn GleichgΓΌltigkeit halte ich fΓΌr absolut fatal .. Keiner wΓΌrde mehr Verantwortung ΓΌbernehmen, fΓΌr den anderen einstehen, sich gegen Unrecht zur Wehr setzen ..und dann wΓΌrde die dunkle Seite in uns allen siegen.
Als Jugendliche haben wir oft nΓ€chtelang diskutiert. Und ich werde nie die Aussagen einer Freundin vergessen, die von dem “Fluch der AufklΓ€rung” sprach..infolge alles erst richtig schlimm geworden sei ..
Aber wenn wir nicht wissen – wie sollen wir dann handeln, vorwΓ€rtskommen, uns weiterentwickeln?
SOLLEN wir das?
da bin ich bei der Frage nach dem Sinn des Lebens .. Und ich kann mir einen so “nihilistischen” Sinn, wie in dem Zitat angedeutet, einfach nicht vorstellen. Wir haben unzΓ€hlige MΓΆglichkeiten, FΓ€higkeiten, Potential – wir haben die Wahl und ein BewuΓtsein, das uns zur Verantwortung verpflichtet ..das ist meine Meinung π

herzlichen Dank fΓΌr das Lob zu meiner Zeichnung. Ich bin mit Leib und Seele Zeichnerin und die Zeichnung ist meine Sprache, in der ich rede.
Ich habe das Zitat von Wilde anders verstanden. Es gibt viele Menschen, die einfach im Denken sind. DafΓΌr verurteile ich sie nicht, es ist wie es ist und mit unserer Art zu denken werde wir geboren.
Je mehr du aber denkst, desto mehr hast du auch zu bedenken und Entscheidungen zu treffen, die dann auch wieder Mut erfordern. Und dann wΓ€re es doch schΓΆn und einfach, wenn wir nicht mehr denken brΓ€uchten…..
Γber den Sinn des Lebens habe ich leider gerade keine Zeit zu diskutieren…. schade, eine immer wieder schΓΆne Diskussion…. vielleicht kΓΆnnen wir das nachholen….

Tolles Bild, liebe Susanne und mal wieder eine interessante Debatte, liebe Dina. Bleibt nur die Frage, wer dumm oder ignorant ist. Ich gebe zu, es gibt einige Felder, in denen ich in diese Rubrik gehoere. Und ich denke, manche Leute,die ich fuer ignorant halte, sind Genies in anderen Bereichen. Daher komme ich zu dem Schluss,dass wir es alle so schwer haben, wie wir es uns selber machen. Gruss, Peggy

Nein, Peggy, niemand kann alles wissen. Es ist, denke ich, wie wir das Wissen, was uns angeboten wird, aufnehmen.
Wir kΓΆnnen wirklich sehr, sehr froh sein, dass wir Wissen aufnehmen kΓΆnnen. Ich glaube nicht, dass jeder das kann. Es gibt Menschen, die kΓΆnnen Wissen nicht aufnehmen, selbst wenn sie alle MΓΆglichkeiten dazu haben. Diese Menschen sind deshalb nicht schlecht, sie haben andere MΓΆglichkeiten, oft eine handwerkliche Begabung.
Ignorant ist ja nicht dumm. Ignorant ist fΓΌr mich stur und ein vorhandenes Potential nicht ausnutzen, oder fΓΌr seine eigenen Interessen und nicht fΓΌr das Gemeinwohl .

Ah, what a thought provoking question indeed… I do believe that ignorant people are not as prone to misery as “brooders”, yet I believe that that’s not happiness but rather contentment.

A very good question and one that I have thought about many times over the years. Fear keeps us from seeking answers, exploring new horizons and fulfilling our personal goals. We cannot hide from what is for when we do, we lose sight of the greater joy of being with people who generously offer beauty and knowledge. A good example is when I visit with you! There is an affirmation of life. And of course, our dear Susanne Haun is amazingly intuitive. She captures the essence of a thought, a gesture, a moment so clearly and simply. Ignorance or better said lack of knowledge creates fear – the use of many perhaps especially politicians both left and right-wing – many scare stories rooted to the recipient is unaware of the real facts…
When reality becomes something you think but do not know – it’s scary to me.
But knowledge does often confusion and doubt
– because there will be many more opportunities… π
but in my eyes, so rather confused than “stupid”… π π

Wilde is one of our household gods…great drawing. About the discussion of quotes…i believe it’s better to know more than less. I find it easier to let go of or hide things I know than to stay in the shades never being able to take a step forward.
