We made friends with this lovely dog when we visited Sissinghurst Castle. We asked him if likes Bookfayries and he said, most certainly!

Wir freundeten uns mit diesen feinen Hund an, als wir Sissinghurst besuchten. Wir fragten ihn, ob er Buchfeen liebt. Seine Antwort: “auf jeden Fall!”

  3. I have two, CoCo (Silky Terrier) and Lucy (Boxer). They are both rescue’s from the streets of San Antonio, Texas. This was a great tribute to the dog and I enjoyed it very much. Lovely pictures as well

    • Thank you, John! My Franco (Golden Retriever) is a rescue dog too. He was rescued from a “factory breeder” in Mailand, Italy. He was almost 10 months when he came to me so we had lost all the valuable puppy time for training and getting grounded. It has been a lot of work, much patience and loving care was necessary to get him out of the freezing fright, he’s fine now. It’s most rewarding to see hime today, 10 years old and quite happy. 🙂
      Did you have a hard time getting yours two rescue dogs adjusted to your surroundings?

  6. Hallo Ihr zwei munteren Buchfeen,
    das ist aber ein schoenes Posting ueber Hunde! 🙂 Dina wird sich bestimmt freuen, ihren Franko hier im Bild zu sehen. Liebe Gruesze an sie, und natuerlich auch an den Master. Schoen, dass Dina wieder bei Euch in Cley ist.
    Apropos Hunde: hier hatten wir gerade ein wenig Gewitter, und da habe ich Sally in die Garage gelassen, weil sie bei Donner fuerchterliche Angst hat. Und so liegt sie nun, obwohl das Gewitter laengst vorbei ist, immer noch in der Ecke … und doest! 😉
    Am Mittwochmorgen ist sie, wegen eines richtig kraeftigen Donnerschlags, doch tatsaechlich ausgerissen! Ich hatte sie und Chiquita, als es anfing zu grummeln, aus ihrem Zwinger auf die hintere Terasse geholt und war gerade dabei, die Tuer zur Garage aufzumachen, um beide da hinein zu lassen, als es einen ganz gewaltigen Donnerschlag tat, und Sally [“silly Sally”, wie ich manchmal sage] nahm reiszaus und verschwand um die Hausecke. Und dann habe ich sie nicht mehr finden koennen – fuer etwa gut drei Stunden. Eine ganze Stunde lang bin ich hier in der Nachbarschaft rumgelaufen und rumgefahren und habe mir die Kehle heiser gerufen. Aber keine Spur von Sally. Und dann, ganz urploetzlich, stand sie vor der Terassentuer, als ob nichts geschehen waere. Na ja, etwas aengstlich war sie immer noch. Ich kann Euch gar nicht sagen, wie froh wir waren, dass sie so einfach wieder aufgetaucht war.
    So, gleich gibt’s Fruehstueck. Und nachher bekommen wir ein kleines Gartenhaeuschen geliefert. Das soll ein bisschen Stellplatz fuer ein paar Gartengeraete werden, plus ein Domizil fuer unsere Katzen. Also dann: macht’s gut, liebe Gruesze, und ein schoenes Wochenende Euch allen im kleinen Dorf am groszen Meer,

    • Ja, lieber Pit,
      das war eine Riesengroße, tolle Überraschung! 🙂 Ich habe mich sehr gefreut, auch weil ich im Moment etwas ausgepowert bin.
      Franco ist mir am Anfang auch ein paar Mal im Wald abhanden gekommen. Wenn er Angst bekam ist er losgelaufen. Und wenn er nette Hunde traf ist er auch weggelaufen. 🙂 Er hatte ein kleines Täschen am Halsband mit seiner Adresse und Telefonnummer und es hat nie lange gedauert, da war er wieder zu Hause. Frauchen hat sich jedes mal sehr gefreut, ich kann eure Freude gut empfinden.:-)
      Auf das Gartenhäuschen sind wir sehr gespannt. Wir überlegen etwas länger ein niedliches Gartenhäuschen zu bauen. Gestern auf dem Allotment sahen wir genau das wir suchen; klein und fein mit vier Fenster und einem kleinen Altan, ganz fein um Holz zu lagern. Als Katzendomizil wäre es natürlich perfekt, das ist eine gute Idee! Eine Katze hier zu halten fände ich ganz prima. Dann hoffen wir, dass eure Katzen schnell einziehen und sich dort wohl fühlen.
      Sag mal, hat es nicht geklappt mit der deutschen Tastatur auf deinem neuen Rechner? Kann ich helfen?

      das mit dem Taeschchen mit Adresse und Telefonnummer ist eine gute Idee. Sally hat eine Hundemarke mit der Nummer des Tierarztes. Aber vielleicht sollten wir auch unsere hinzufuegen.
      Sag’ mal: was machst Du denn mit Franko, wenn Du in Cley bist? Ist er dann nicht einsam?
      Zur deutschen Tastatur auf meinen Rechnern: bisher war ich einfach noch zu faul, um es auszuprobieren. Mal sehen, wann. Danke aber auf jeden Fall fuer Dein Hilfsangebot.

  7. Please give Franco and extra pat for me. What a lovely pup. We did have a dog but our Bruiser passed on about four years ago. Heartbreaking. I so enjoyed the quote about kicking the grass over the shit…isn’t that the truth!

  8. Was für ein schöner Beitrag! Die Hundejungs haben mir gleich mal über die Schulter geguckt und Linus, der irische Bordercollie, hat zu übersetzen versucht. Siehste, hat Felix dann gesagt, da steht es mal, wie wichtig wir für Euch Menschen sind, bringen immer gute Laune und viel Spaß in Euer Leben und trösten Euch über den ein oder anderen Ärger.       Franco lives permanently in Bonn and he is taken very well cared of. He is always in the same, loving surroundings and never alone. He brings me to the airport and he picks up me from the airport too! 🙂 He is a rescue dog, not fit for traveling at all, so he is happy to stay at home, living next to a big forest where he feels safe and is not threatened by noisy people and cars. Franco was 10 months old when I got him, pretty late to learn the big lessons for life, but he’s coping fine in his little secure world now.

    • This is interesting, Hans; i just read that the Swedish Lapphund, a national dog in Sweden, dates back to the Varangerhund. 🙂 I must admit, this is new to me…

He is always in the same, loving surroundings and never alone. He brings me to the airport and he picks up me from the airport too! 🙂 He is a rescue dog, not fit for traveling at all, so he is happy to stay at home, living next to a big forest where he feels safe and is not threatened by noisy people and cars. Franco was 10 months old when I got him, pretty late to learn the big lessons for life, but he’s coping fine in his little secure world now.

  16. Eight months ago I belonged to the “no-dog lover people category”. Then Sofia arrived and everything changed. Yes, I’m the living proof that dogs can change your heart. There is something magical about these furry family members and their way to communicate their feelings and likings without saying a word. It amazes me everyday!
    I’m so happy that you are all together!!! Enjoy your family time!!! It is priceless!

    • Dear Francesca,
      before I got to know Dina I was a “non-dog lover” as well. Actually I didn’t notice dogs and found people suspicious who are fond of dogs. But that has entirely changed since I am with Dina who grew up with dogs. Well, Dina’s father was a breeder of dogs and so Dina can speak dog-language. When a dog is around he or she immediately is attracted by Dina. And so it happened that I see now how lovely dogs can be. I live in an area where most of the people have black or brown labradors. My former neighbour had two black labradors all the time playing in his garden and playing with his little twins as well. It was so lovely seeing the two little girls playing with those powerful dogs. Unfortunately the neighbour has moved and I miss those dogs, altough they were not mine. I never had a dog, I see myself rather as a cat person.
      We are really enjoying our time together now and Siri and Selma are so happy as well about being a family again. You are right this time together is priceless, indeed!

  18. Love all the doggie photos. We have two dogs and they enrich our lives! One is a very old Irish Wolfhound, and the other a happy-go-lucky mixture. Have a wonderful time together in Cley!

    • My best friend at school had a an irish Wolfshound, such a great dog. At that time I was eleven and I had got my first dog, a gorgeous Schäferhund. My father was very successful breeding German Shepherds in Norway. It was very frustrating waiting for the irish Wolfshound to grow bigger and strong enough to go for long walks with us, but as he was almost a year old there was nothing stopping us anymore. 🙂

    Whenever I meet a dog, I know that we are not the most advanced creatures that walk this earth. They understand our language, but we can’t learn theirs. They recognize our joy or pain, even before we recognize it in ourselves. They are simply amazing. My favourite dogquote:

  24. Auch wenn ich ein ausgesprochener Katzenfreund bin, muss ich die gestellte Frage nach dem Mögen mit ‘Ja’ beantworten – spätestens nach den hübschen Fotos in dem Beitrag! Er ist so liebevoll gemacht – über solch einen Willkommensgruß muss man sich ja freuen. Auf die Erörterung über die Symbolik des Hundes freue ich mich schon sehr und bin gespannt. Mögen denn Siri und Selma wenigstens ein kleines bisschen auch die Katzen???

    • Ganz klar JA!, liebe Eva! Siri und Selma, Klausbernd und ich lieben Katzen. Wir würden gerne eine Katze haben. Pit schrieb vorhin, er hat ein neues Gartenhaus, es dient auch als Domizil für seine Katzen. das wäre ideal in Rhu Sila. Wir suchen auch eine neues süßes Gartenhäuschen. Ich hätte gerne eine Katze, am liebsten die tolle Waldkatze aus meiner Heimat Norwegen. Die hat so feine Luchsohren und sieht wunderschön aus. Wir haben ein paar Katzen in der Umgebung die uns leider viel zu selten besuchen. Hast du eine Katze oder zwei?

    • Liebe Dina, Danke für den Katzentipp und es freut mich so sehr, dass Ihr alle ebenfalls Katzen mögt und ganz besonders, dass Du der Norwegischen Waldkatze zugetan bist, besitze ich doch selbst einen Main-Coon-Kater, eine Rasse die der norwegischen Waldkatze sehr ähnlich ist, nur längere Beine hat, aber sonst genauso schwer und luchsartig ist (8,7 kg wiegt unserer). Dazu haben wir noch einen kleine weiße Thai-Katze, die Ur- bzw. Vorform der Siamkatze, die ist mein kleines Herzblatt. Und meine jüngste Tochter wünscht sich sehnlich einen Hund und damit schließt sich der Kreis 🙂

    • Liebe Eva,
      ich bin mehr eine Katzen-Person und Siri und Selma wünschen sich sehr eine Schmusekatze und auch Dina mag Katzen, aber bei ihr müsste es, glaube ich, eine besondere sein. Sie schwärmt von einer norwegischen Waldkatze. Wir hatten bislang keine Haustiere hier, da wir stets viel unterwegs waren. Das hat sich aber geändert, seitdem ich nicht mehr auf Tournee gehe. Früher war ich über ein halbes Jahr jährlich unterwegs, das sind natürlich denkbar schlechte Voraussetzungen für Katze oder Hund. Aber wie ich das bei uns so sehe, werden wir sicher demnächst eine feine Katze haben. Allerdings muss die unaggressiv Vögeln gegenüber sein, da wir doch in einem Vogelschutzgebiet wohnen.

      ganz lieben Dank für deine Antwort, es freut mich, dass Ihr duchaus auch Katzenmenschen seid 🙂 und fast wie eure liebklugen Feen wünscht sich meine jüngste Tochter einen Schmusehund (unsere beiden Katzen reichen ihr nicht mehr :-)) da sie aber erst 10 Jahre alt ist, vertraue ich ihren Beteuerungen, sich ganz allein darum zu kümmern, nicht so ganz 🙂 Wir haben einen MainCoonKater, imposant und majestätisch (sieht der norwegischen Waldkatze sehr ähnlich, genauso groß und ebenso wildkatzig anzusehen, aber dem würde ich allerdings auch nicht glauben, wenn er verspräche, keine vögel zu jagen…) Unsere Katzen leben beinahe wie Familienmitglieder mit im Haus und da wir nicht so schön ländlich ruhig und idyllisch wie Ihr leben, sondern eben eher städtisch, verlassen sie dieses auch nicht, sondern sehen es, vom Dachboden bis in den Keller ganz als ihr eigenes an 🙂

    • Guten Morgen, liebe Eva,
      nachdem ich ganz unidyllisch gerade unseren Rasenmäher reparierte, erhol ich mich nun beim Bloggen 😉
      Zu unseren Haustieren zähle ich die Vögel, die neugierig nahe kommen, wenn wir im Garten arbeiten und auch Körner aus der Hand fressen. Vielleicht liegt es daran, dass wir im ältesten Vogelschutzgebiet Englands wohnen, das die Vögel sich geradezu zahm verhalten.
      Wir hätten günstige Voraussetzungen für Katzen, da wir an einer völlig ruhigen kleinen Straße leben und einen großen Garten haben. Mal sehen, ob hier bald eine Katze einzieht.

  25. Ja, ich habe einen Hund, besser, wir haben einen Hund. Kurioserweise ist mein Mann der Hundeliebhaber, ich bin eine Katzennärrin. Vor knapp neun Jahren eroberte ein Welpe unser Herz und mein Mann, ein Mensch, der alles durchdenken muss, sagte bereits Ja, bevor er mit dem Denken begann. Ich erbat mir Bedenkzeit. Nach unserem Urlaub, in dem wir, bisher völlig hundeunerfahren, uns ausgiebigst belesen und auch eine Hundeschule ausfindig gemacht hatten, durfte Karlchen sich unserem Rudel anschließen. Und obwohl mein Mann, der bereits Rudelrentner war, die meiste Zeit mit ihm verbringt, gehört Karlchens Herz mir. Sobald ich im Haus bin, ist er stets dort, wo ich mich aufhalte. Und dennoch schlägt mein Herz Purzelbäume, wenn mir eine Katze begegnet.

    • We’re very sorry to hear about the loss of beautiful Mille. It breaks ones heart every time to loose an animal, Ann Christine. I find it very hard to be without a dog, I grew up with lots of dogs around as my father was breeding German Shepherds.

  34. Hello, Franco! We didn’t know about you — how beautiful you are! Where are you, while “mom” is in UK? Or are you there as well?
    BTW, Jean volunteers as a press release writer for a local pet rescue group; over 15,000 dogs and cats rescued since 1982! We wonder, what are the statistics regarding animal homelessness in the UK and Europe?

    • I have no idea, I’m sorry to say, but I’ll look into into it. I find this most interesting; so many cats and dogs rescued! ❤ We think it's great that Jean volunteers for the rescue group, well done! Such a group asked me 9 years ago if I were willing to to take care of a very poor Golden Retriever, much too fragile to be put into a rescue home; that's how I got Franco.

Franco was 10 months old when I got him, pretty late to learn the big lessons for life, but he’s coping fine in his little secure world now.

  35. Tolle Bilder vom besten Freund des Menschen. 🙂
    Die Frage nach dem Hund – ja, ich hatte zwei Hunde. Timmy, einen Senfhund (undefinierbare Rasse, es hatte jeder seinen Senf dazu getan) 🙂 und Ronja, eine Kleine Münsterländer Hündin. Als Timmy mit fast zwölf Jahren begann erste Alterschwäche Erscheinungen zu zeigen, gab mir ein Tierarzt den Tipp, wenn es möglich wäre einen Welpen ins Haus zu holen, das würde alternden Tieren oft neuen Schwung geben. Genauso war auch, mit dem Einzug der damals acht Wochen alten Ronja, war der Hund wie ausgewechselt und wurde knapp 15 Jahre alt. Seit acht Jahren habe ich aber leider nur noch Katzen, aber in ein paar Jahren, wenn ich mehr Zeit habe, wird es auch auf jeden Fall wieder einen Hund geben, der tägliche für die nötige Bewegung sorgt und ein bisschen wirbelndes Leben ins Haus bringt. 🙂

      Du schreibst von Katzen gleich im Plural, wie viele hast du denn?
      Ich habe das Gefühl, dass Hunde “wirbelndes Leben” in Haus bringen und Katzen bringen eher Ruhe.

    • Stimmt Katzen gab es bei mir immer im Plural. 🙂 Anfangs waren es drei Katzen und ein Hund, später dann zwei Katzen und zwei Hunde. Momentan habe ich aber nur noch eine Katze. Bei mir gab es immer beides zeitgleich und es gab nie Probeme zwischen Hund und Katze und so wird das auch mal wieder werden. 🙂 Denn -> der Hund bringt einen auf Trab und die Katze sorgt dann wieder für die Ruhephasen. Man sagt, es gäbe Katzen- und Hundemenschen, ich passe wohl in keine Schublade, ich mag beide gleichermaßen.

  36. Einen schönen guten Morgen aus Greenwich, Ihr Lieben! Das sind ja schöne Hundefotos und -zitate. Ich gebe zu, wir haben kein Haustier. Das liegt aber vor allem daran, dass mein Mann und ich im Herzen Nomaden sind und es keinem Haustier antun wollen, viel Zeit allein zu verbringen. Liebe Grüße, Peggy

      ja, das war bei mir genauso. Bis vor zwei Jahren war ich fast jedes Jahr 7 Monate und mehr unterwegs. In diesen Jet-set-Lebensstil passte natürlich kein Haustier. Ich kam auch nie auf die Idee, mir eins anzuschaffen. Als Student hatte ich die Katze Mausi, die eine Wohngemeinschaftskatze war, aber sonst lebte ich haustierfrei. Das kann sich jedoch demnächst ändern, mal sehen …
      Ich geb’s zu, dass ich gar nicht gerne reise. Ich reiste so viel in meinem Leben, schon mit meinen Eltern, die begeisterte Fernreisende waren, dass ich sozusagen die Nase voll vom Reisen habe. Oh dear, jetzt lassen ich den grumpy old man heraushängen, aber früher war das Reisen viel schöner … Aber Dina reist gern und so finden wir einen Ausgleich. Ich kann stets zu Schiffreisen in die Arktis oder nördlichen Meere überredet werden oder kleinere Städtereisen oder Wanderrlaub. Aber klar, wenn man am Meer lebt, das man liebt, warum sollte man wegfahren? Und durch dieses Mehr-zu-Hause-Sein wird die Frage nach dem Haustier aktuell. We will see …

    I especially like Franco, and your quote about him … and was that him covered in mud and kicking shit in the other photos? 🙂 Your comment above about how he came into your life, and the work you put into helping him adjust to stability, was inspiring.

    To answer your question: yes, I have a dog who is also 10 years old. My chocolate labrador MacKenzie came with me from the States to Norway when she was 3 years old. She has been my constant companion and friend during my seven years here. She’s slowed and has numerous health issues, but with medicine and Norway’s clean water and air she has more energy than my husband and I put together.

    “My goal in life is to be as good of a person my dog already thinks I am” (author unknown) is one of the quotes on my blog. Life sure would be empty without our canine friends!

    • Yes, Cindi – you are absolutely right about the muddy dog being Franco. He only needs a few drops of water in the forest to look like this. I always have to watch out for puddles when we go for walks. If we met a neighbour and I start talking to them I can be sure he’ll grasp the opportunity to roll around in the puddle. Nowadays, with the hot temperature, he makes sure that he gets so muddy that I have to bring him to a lake a little further away. He is such a happyhappy dog when he can go for a swim. Like all Retrievers he LOVES ❤ water. 🙂 Francesca and Stefano (above) also have got a chocolate Labrador, they are gorgeous! Does MacKenzie love to go for a swim as well? Franco will turn 10 next month and he slowed down very much, we can't do long walkies anymore, but he's fine.

  44. ich mag ja sehr dieses kleine “Füchschen”, wenn mich nicht alles täuscht heisst die Rasse Akita und stammt ursprünglich aus Japan …
    und natürlich habt ihr Recht, wenn ihr zitiert, dass ein Hund ein wahrer Freund ist, ich hatte mal so einen und manchmal überlege ich mir wieder einen anzuschaffen, aber Zurzeit ist mein Leben dafür doch zu unruhig …

      fein, wieder von dir zu lesen.
      Dina ist eine große Hundenärrin. Zu ihr kommen sofort alle Hunde, als ob sie es spüren würden.
      Bei unruhigem Leben ist es mit Haustieren schlecht, deswegen hatte ich bislang auch keine Haustiere. Siri und Selma, aber auch Dina möchten gerne welche und so wird sich das hier sicher ändern.
      Ganz liebe Grüße vom Meer. Wir haben heute alle emsig 2 Gewächshäuser renoviert, die wir auf einem Schrottplatz fanden. Wir machen so etwas gerne und die Vögel – unsere außerhäusigen Haustiere – guckten dabei so neugierig und interessiert zu, als ob sie dort einziehen wollten.

    • Vladimir, der russische Tänzer, der einige Jahre bei mir unterrichtete…als er in Berlin ankam, lernte er Nurejew kennen, er war die erste Person, die er kennen lernte und ihm half in Deutschland zurecht zu kommen…..das erfuhr ich aber erst bei Vladimirs Beerdigung. Wir hatten nie viel Zeit zum Reden, es muss ja getanzt werden…..nun, es wird bekanntlich viel gelogen bei Beerdigungen, aber das glaube ich mal….
      Mit einem lieben Hund kann man so toll über das Gleiche schweigen, das tut gut! Tiefes Verständnis ohne Worte…..

      we were busy the whole day building a shed for our firewood. It’s so warm and sunny and we like such a work. Dina and Selma are the ones who always getting ideas what to build to transform our garden into a paradise. We got a beautiful old fashioned grow box also and restored it.
