The Tall Ship Races 2014 in Fredrikstad has come to an end. We had four glorious days with almost tropical weather and lots of fun 🙂
Yesterday the seventy ships left Dina’s hometown and we Bookfayries and Dina happily accepted the invitation to follow the ships to sea. This is definitely the nice side of being a happy blogging family 🙂
We, Siri and Selma, preferred the two small and very powerful tugboats Balder and Belos. And guess what! We helped maneuvering the ships by pushing or towing them out the narrow port of Fredrikstad.
Das Windjammer Rennen 2014 nach Fredrikstad ist vorbei. Schade! Wir hatten vier tolle Tage mit fast tropischem Wetter und soooo viel Spaß und Freude 🙂
Gestern verließen die siebzig großen Schiffe Dinas Heimatstadt. Wir Buchfeen und unsere liebe Dina nahmen freudig die Einladung an, den Schiffen beim verlassen des Hafens zu folgen. Das sind die schönen Seiten, wenn man eine glückliche Blogger-Familie ist 🙂
Wir, Siri und Selma, waren fasziniert von den starken Schleppern Balder und Belos – und wisst ihr was? Wir halfen, die Windjammer durch Drücken und Ziehen aus den schmalen Hafen von Fredrikstad zu manövrieren.
Don’t you think we did a great job? Dina and our beloved Master are proud having us!
Haben wir gut gemacht, findet ihr das nicht auch? Dina und Masterchen sind richtig stolz auf uns.

Toll gemacht, liebe Siri und Selma!
Schau mal was meinen Sohn im Netz gefunden hat: in deutscher Sprache einen Film aus 1958 mit diesem Begleittext:
Dieser ausgezeichnete Film von 1958, in Deutscher Sprache, ist total verloren gegangen. Er schildert die Reise des norwegischen Segelschulschiffes CHRISTIAN RADICH mit Kadetten bei der Ausbildung Die Jungs die damals 20 Jahre alt waren dürften jetzt bereits weit über 70 sein. Im Film ist auch noch das Deutsche Segelschulschiff PAMIR zu sehen kurz bevor es unterging. Habe diesen Film vor Jahren von einer Prvatperson erworben und so wie es aussieht dürfte er einmal im Kino mitgeschnitten worden sein.. Das Christian Radich Institut in Norwegen selber hat ihn nicht mehr.Ich habe da nachgefragt, Damit der Film der Nachwelt erhalten bleibt, stelle ich ihn jetzt hier ins Netz.Es war damals der erste Breitwandfilm mit 3 Kameras aufgenommen.Habe den Film so gut es ging bearbeitet.In den ersten 10 Minuten des Filmes ist nur das mittlere Bild der 3 Kameras zu sehen. So war auch das Original. Danach aber dann 105 Minuten der Film in ganzer Breite. Die Bildqualität ist nicht so gut, aber besser als gar nichts.Der Film hat eine Länge von knapp 2 Studen.

Nautical Bookfayries in tugboats, what a surprise! 🙂 This is outstanding, great photowork! I suppose you have many shelves in your library with nautical books, all kinds of sea stories including the wild ones, pirates and more?
I collect sea stories in books as well as films, although I myself feel better on land. 🙂 Biut the sea is fascinating and has always been. Time to open a nice bootle of wine and enjoy the adventures of James Cook, cheers everbody! 🙂

Dear John,
you are right, our beloved Master collects books about sea adventures, pirates and nautical books. Unfortunately we don’t have so many films. In our library are all the classics: the collected works of Patrick O’Brian and Dudley Pope, the books of Fergus Fleming anf of course all the books about the mutiny of the Bounty. Friar and some of the mutineers are from our area. In Wells next the Sea, the next market town, you can still see Friear’s cottage, tomb stone and listen to many Friar-stories 😉
Actually it’s not quite correct what we said, we have got a huge collection of (mostly) old Pirate films.
With our beloved Dina and our dear Master we visited Cook’s house two years ago and Dina gave us many books about Cook’s journeys for our library. Several years ago Dina took us to a great exhibition about Cook’s journeys in Bonn/Germany.
I am writing this with 5 meters of books about pirates in my back. Hier http://kbvollmar.wordpress.com/artikelpiraterie/ you find a long arcticle our Master published about female and male piracy.

I had a look at your at your post about male and female piracy. I’m sure it’s great and most enjoyable, unfortunately my German is not all good and I can’t read it. Can you please help me and explain how the ggogle translator works? And is the translator reliable, what do you think?

sorry, but it’s a pity that I have those two big articles in German only. Well, the Google translator will give you a rough idea what’s all about but that’s it.
The texts are an abstract from from my studies mainly about female piracy. Women have been much more successfull in this rough business than men. I write about the sexual projections on male and female pirates as well. At the end of part 2 “The Female Piracy” you find a list of all the known female pirates and where and when they operated.
Siri and Selma are hiding their being pirates too. Dina is not allowed to take picure of them. A pity, isn’t it …

Wonderful shots of the beautiful ships.
My son took part in this race two years ago…..he sailed for two weeks from St Malo in France to Lisbon, Portugal all under sail. They had night shifts to do….can you imagine the view of the night sky from the top of the rigging on a tall ship in the middle of the Bay of Biscay…..apparently breathtaking 🙂

That sounds spectacular, Seonaid. What a great experience for a young man. Memories for a lifetime. Psss.., don’t tell anyone, but we actually got an invitation to clim the rig, which I kindly turned down. Siri and Selma flew up there several times. Sigh, sometimes I wish I had wings myself. 🙂 70% of the the crew has to be between 15-25 years. Most ships stock up with paying passengers, actually anyone reasonably healthy can book a leg. The most popular ones are soon fully booked, but there were smaller ships in Fredrikstad offering last minute prices for the leg to Bergen.

My son sailed with Jubilee sailing trust, they take a mix of able bodied and disabled youngsters….they buddy each other…..and the ship is fitted out so that wheelchairs can be hoisted up the rigging, they are also kitted out for blind and deaf people. It’s a great opportunity for everyone 🙂

You guys are so clever. We’ve had them all down here, you know ! – not only for our BiCentenary in 1988, but ten years later for a smaller celebration, as well. And Chic took lots of photos of them at mooring, because in those days we had a view straight down to Pyrmont Bay ! (Not any more …)

ja hier ist es auch seit Wochen hochsommerlich heiß, was so Temperaturen um 25 Grad C bedeutet. Bei etwas Seewind ist das okay, aber – ehrlich – wir sind den ständigen Sonnenschein leid, wir wollen REGEN!
Ja, diese Windjammer wecken die tollsten nautischen Sehnsüchte, obwohl das Leben auf ihnen nicht gerade freiheitlich war – was Masterchen uns desillusionierend erzählte.

Wenn die bunten Fahnen wehen, geht die Fahrt wohl übers Meer, woll´n wir ferne Länder sehen, fällt der Abschied uns nicht schwer.

Aber die Vernunft hat uns doch gebremst, die Arbeit ruft und überhaupt… Die erste Etappe von Harlingen in NL nach Fedrikstad war kein Vergnügen; das Wetter war schlecht, die Wellen waren sehr hoch und es wurde um die Wette gekotzt. Die Strecke Harlingen-Frdrikstad = 450 nautische Seemeilen. Die meisten Schiffe hatten das doppelte zurückgelegt bevor sie Fredikstad erreichten, puuuh. 🙂

You should try to get into the city, Cindi, it’s well worth it! The atmoshere is great. Can you see the ships from your house as they pass by? We were invited to inspect the ships from the water on a perfect little Brig and there are so many things going on, especially for the children. Siri and Selma loved it and they say “tusen takk, kjære Cindi!” 🙂
Have a great time in Bergen and enjoy – Norway is represented with threee outstanding beauties: Statsraad Lehmkuhl (100 years old now!), Christian Radich and Sørlandet. You don* want to miss them. 🙂

We enjoyed it very much indeed, GP Cox. The weather was magic, just like Florida at it’s best, only as the ships were to sail out the very strong wind came along and gave us the grey sky; great for photography, much better than glorious sunshine all the time. 🙂 Beacause of the seriuosly strong wind from the wrong direction, they left us without the sails up. Better luck next time! 🙂

thanks for your kind words. It was GREAT being there and getting the opportunity to get so near to these tall ships. I love these ships and many, many years ago I sailed sailing boats (but smaller ones, of course) around the world until I had to rescued by a helicopter. This was the end of my sailing career. Well, we sail out to the seals with Klaus’ boat, but that’s not serious sailing, just fun 🙂

yeah, those were the times of the great clippers, the pirates and the Flying Dutchman 😉
To see those ships nowadays is wonderful, but in the olden days sailing on such a ship was not fun at all. I think we, the Fab Four, would hardly have survived it. They were so crowded, the work so hard and the food so horrible … well, that’s the other side of the coin. But to sail on such a ship today is fun 🙂

Dearest. We had wonderful days, with almost tropical heat. Unfortunately, on the day of departure, as seen from the pictures, the wind was blowing at gale force. Nevertheless, Jostein and I went in the afternoon to the tip of the Hvaler islands, Rødshue, to look at all the ship and to see when they were raising their sails. But, alas, the wind was too heavy and they all went by motor. But what a sight it was anyway. This past weekend I was proud of my hometown 😀 😀

Ich finde diese großen Windjammer immer wieder hinreißend schön. Für die Seeleute darauf war und ist die Arbeit schwer und nicht mit der Arbeit auf anderen Schiffen zu vergleichen. Heute ist es ja mehr die Freude an diesen Schiffen, die diese stolzen Damen der Meere am Leben erhält. Aber toll, dass es so etwas gibt. Ich bewundere solches Engagement.
Hier bei uns werden sich auch bald wieder die Großsegler der Welt treffen – zur Hansesail 2014 in Rostock. Das ist immer ein faszinierendes Ereignis – vor allem sooo viele Schiffe davon einmal zusammen sehen zu können.

ich habe mich auch gefragt, was uns an diesen Windjammern so fasziniert, obwohl es vom Härtesten war, auf ihnen als Seemann zu arbeiten. Wahrscheinlich liegt ihre Anziehung darin, dass sie uns an das 17. und 18. Jh. erinnern, als es neben den Segelschiffen noch Pferdekutschen, Windmühlen und Schlösser, Entdeckungsreisende und Alchimisten, Erfinder und eigenständige Denker gab, als die Dunkelheit mit dem Sonnenuntergang und die Helligkeit mit dem Sonnenaufgang kam und das Meer voller Wale, die Wälder voller Bären und Wölfe waren und jede Seefahrt mit Lebensgefahr verbunden war. All das pflegen wir in diesem unseren Zeitalter der Entfremdung zu idealisieren. Es ist das, was wir unwiederbringlich verloren haben, dem wir nachtrauern.
Oder was meinst du, woher diese Faszination der Windjammer kommt?

Wahrscheinlich ist es so, wie Du sagst. Ein wenig sieht man darin auch die Seefahrerromantik, von der wir uns einbilden, dass es sie gibt. Die schwere Arbeit sieht man, wenn man diese stolzen Schiffe anschaut, eher weniger oder nur sehr am Rande. Mir persönlich gefallen diese Großsegler einfach, es sind ganz simpel gesagt, hübsche Schiffe, die man noch mit viel Liebe zum Detail gebaut hat.
Die Hansesail findet am zweiten Augustwochenende statt – immer mit sehr viel Trubel. Die Großsegler sind ein fester Bestandteil der Sail.

du sprichst da etwas an, was mich persönlich sehr interessiert, nämlich die Projektionen auf Schiffe und den Seemann. Beim Seemann werden die schwere Arbeit, harte Strafen und Enge auf den Schiffen freilich völlig ausgeblendet. Aber seit dem Ende des 18. Jh., als Banks die Tagebücher seiner Reise mit James Cook veröffentlichte, wurde der Seemann zur Projektionsfläche für sexuelle Bedürfnisse – heterosexueller und homesexueller Art. Er wurde als der erfahrene Mann gesehen, der exotische Sexualpraktiken erlebt hatte. Und, wenn du willst, seine Geliebte ist sein Schiff. So wird dieses Schiff gleich mit ihm erotisiert.
Das ist eine tiefenpsychologische Erklärung neben vielen anderen möglichen.
Natürlich sind solche Schiffe schön, aber was wir als schön erleben, geht zumeist auf Projektionen zurück. Okay, vielleicht sollte man das Schöne nicht zerreden, sondern nur genießen. In dem Sinn wünsche ich dir viel Freude bei der Hansesail 🙂

Something very noble about tall ships. We had quite a number docked at Great Yarmouth a couple of years ago – a magnificent sight moored along South Quay.

I saw them too and was fascinated.
I did ask myself why we are so fascinated seeing those tall ships. May be they remind us on the 17th and 18th century with its castles, windmills and horses and carriges, the time of explorers and alchemists, a time when the oceans were full of whales, the woods full of woolfes and bears and going out to far away countries was very risky. In our time of alienation we idealise all this although life was hard then and death never far away. But it is something we have lost forever, we bemoan.
At least I feel like this …

Dina and me have been in Dublin two years ago for a fortnight and I can imagine that it must have been amazing seeing those ships there.
Well, Dina was leaving her hometown which is Fredrikstad in Norway and she went yesterday with our beloved Bookfayries to Bonn in the Rhine valley where she is working and then, in a fortnight, she comes to me in Cley next the Sea at the North Norfolk coast, her second home and home of our dear Bookfayries. A bit complicated, isn’t it? 😉

We moved to the North thirty odd years ago, well, not so far north but to the North Norfolk coast and the magic of the North has enchanted us. We couldn’t imagine to live in the South anymore.
Dina was born and risen in Fredrikstad, Klausbernd was partly risen in southern Sweden, so there is a long lasting connection to the North.
