Awaiting Storm Eunice

We are still sitting comfortably at our desks. Despite the sunshine, it is eerie. Almost every minute, weather warnings come over the radio and with red pop-up windows on our computer. Storm Eunice is approaching. In Germany, it is called Zeynep, which Siri 🙂 and 🙂 Selma think is stupid, because only nice children have many names.

Noch sitzen wir gemütlich an unseren Schreibtischen. Trotz Sonnenschein ist es unheimlich. Fast minütlich kommen Wetterwarnungen über das Radio und mit roten pop-up Fenstern an unserem Computer. Der Sturm Eunice naht. In Deutschland heißt er Zeynep, was Siri 🙂 und 🙂 Selma voll blöd finden, denn nur liebe Kinder haben viele Namen.

They were just in the garden with our dear Master, tying up everything that wasn’t nailed down. Before that we had batteries ready for our torches, lighters for the candles we placed everywhere and sweet Dina charged all our computers and pocket phones and fed the birds outside so they could take shelter with their bellies full. Just then the news came in that it was “risk for life and limb” outside this afternoon, a twist that Siri 🙂 immediately wrote in her fairy booklet.

Sie waren eben mit Masterchen im Garten, um alles festzubinden, was nicht niet- und nagelfest ist. Vorher haben wir Batterien für unsere Taschenlampen bereit gelegt, Feuerzeuge für die Kerzen, die wir überall plazierten, und Dinalein hat alle unsere Rechner und Taschentelefone aufgeladen und die Vögel draußen gefüttert, dass sie mit vollem Bauch Schutz suchen können. Gerade kam die Nachricht herein, heute Nachmittag sei draußen “risk for life und limb“, eine Wendung, die Siri 🙂 sogleich in ihr Feenbüchlein schrieb.

Yesterday, after the storm Dudley, we went to the beach together, where Dina photographed the high waves. It was still so windy that gusts wanted to knock us over. Of course, we had to tie Siri 🙂 and 🙂 Selma well, otherwise they would have been blown to Norway. Back home Dina was busy cleaning her camera.

Gestern nach dem Sturm Dudley sind wir noch zusammen ans Meer gegangen, wo Dina die hohen Wellen fotografierte. Es war immer noch so windig, dass Böen uns umwerfen wollten. Natürlich mussten wir Siri 🙂 und 🙂 Selma gut festbinden, sonst wären sie doch flugs nach Norwegen geweht worden. Zu Hause hat Dina lange ihre Kamera reinigen müssen.

Is this supposed to reassure us that the COBRA Emergency Committee is meeting and the military is on standby, ask Siri 🙂 and 🙂 Selma. All right, let’s stick to the facts: Eunice hit the far west coast this morning with winds of 150 km/h, which is the wildest storm to threaten London in thirty years, about now as we write this. Air traffic has been suspended, major bridges closed and ferries to the continent are not running either. Splendid isolation again.

Soll uns das beruhigen, dass der COBRA Katastrophenschutz gerade tagt und das Militär in Alarmbereitschaft steht, fragen Siri 🙂 und 🙂 Selma. Na gut, bleiben wir bei den Fakten: Heute morgen erreichte Eunice die äußerste Westküste mit Windgeschwindigkeiten von 150 km/h, was seit dreißig Jahren der wildeste Sturm ist, der etwa jetzt, wenn wir das schreiben, London bedroht. Der Flugverkehr wurde eingestellt, die großen Brücken geschlossen und die Fähren zum Kontinent fahren auch nicht. Das Ideal Englands Spledid Isolation.

It is still relatively calm here, although the three-metre-high bamboo bends gracefully to the ground in gusts. Selma 🙂 faithfully makes us tea according to the motto “keep cool and drink tea” and so we wait and hope that Ariel, the wind spirit, is favourably disposed towards us. After all, all the doors in the house are just beginning to rattle in mighty gusts.

Bei uns ist es noch relativ ruhig, obwohl bei Böen sich der drei Meter hohe Bambus grazil bis zur Erde neigt. Selma 🙂 macht uns treu nach der Devise “abwarten und Tee trinken” einen Tee. So warten wir und hoffen, dass Ariel, der Windgeist, uns günstig gesinnt ist. Immerhin beginnen gerade in mächtigen Böen alle Türen im Haus zu klappern.

Are you in Germany also as affected as Master’s sister, who wanted to take the train south today? No way, it didn’t go, much to her annoyance. Is it the end of the world like in Jakob von Hoddis’ expressionist poem?

The burgher’s hat flies away in a trice.
In all quarters resounds hullaballoo.
Roof tilers plummet down and break in two.
Along the coasts—one reads — the floodings rise.
The storm is here, wuthering seas are hopping
Ashore to crush dams as if they were midges.
Most people have a cold that is not stopping.
The railway waggons tumble down from bridges.

Seid ihr in Deutschland auch so betroffen, wie Masterchens Schwester, die just heute mit dem Zug in den Süden fahren wollte? Nix da, der fuhr zu ihrem Ärger nicht. Ist es das Weltende wie im expressionistischen Gedicht von Jakob von Hoddis?

Dem Bürger fliegt vom spitzen Kopf der Hut,
In allen Lüften hallt es wie Geschrei,
Dachdecker stürzen ab und gehn entzwei.
Und an den Küsten – liest man – steigt die Flut.
Der Sturm ist da, die wilden Meere hupfen
An Land, um dicke Dämme zu zerdrücken.
Die meisten Menschen haben einen Schnupfen.
Die Eisenbahnen fallen von den Brücken.

  2. We also woke to the bright sunshine. Now 22 miles south of you, the rain is arriving, and the wind increasing in strength. I have to take Ollie out soon, so we will be staying out in the open, and avoiding trees.

    • From now on we are staying in, dear Pete. Here the wind is increasing in strength as well but not really dangerous yet. We’ll see. For our area the strongest wind power is forcasted for between 15h and 16h.

    • Here the wind is quite increasing. The sun is hiding behind grey clouds now. We decided to stay in, even not going into our garden because the old apple trees will beat at us with their branches like trees in Lord of the Rings.

    • Machen wir. Nun ist es schon viel stürmischer geworden als zu der Zeit, als wir diesen Beitrag schrieben. Es wird nun drinnen geblieben, das wurde gemeinsam beschlossen.

    • Fortunately, we cook with gas from tanks in our garden, so cooking is not the problem. And we love having a candlelight dinner. It’s cosy, isn’t it?

    • If we still have electricity, we will go after we finished eating our soup in our sauna. It is very cosy there hearing the high winds and sweating.

    • No, we had the soup afterwards.
      When we lived in Finland they ate their sauna lenkki (a sausage) in the sauna. You put this sausage on the hot stones, it splits open and you fill it with finely chopped onions, gherkins and a little mustard and eat it in the sauna. We don’t eat in our sauna but afterwards, we have a cosy meal in our bathing robes.

      wir glauben, dass wir relativ ungeschoren wegkommen werden. Außer dass bei unserem Gardenshed die Dachpappe weggeflogen ist, scheinen wir keine größeren Schäden zu haben. Allerdings weht es immer noch enorm in Böen.

      in a way it is. There are several novels called “The Hungry Sea”. You really have the feeling the waves 🌊🌊 will devour you when these big waves come towards you.

      we feel safe, well prepared and soon the worst will be over as the metOffice predicts it.
      Now we are at the peak and still have electricity, are connected to the internet and only the roof felting of our garden shed has been blown away. Well, that’s nothing.

      Well, we are survivors. But it’s wild right now. We have the feeling that our house is moving in the ferocious gusts of wind. Nevertheless, we still have electricity and are connected to the net.
      We drink tea every day as well. Our Master loves his herb-teas (fennel and aniseeds with milk and honey) and Dina rather black tea.

      we are so used to our sauna that we couldn’t live without it. When we are travelling we always look for hotels with a sauna too. But unfortunately the English don’t have a sauna culture. They are too prudish to enjoy it. We were used from early childhood onwards to nakedness, well, we didn’t have neither Puritans nor a strong Christian influence.

    I wish you all the best and that you stay safe. But, sorry, to write this. Nowadays everything and especially unusual natural events are highly exaggerated. I think, this is a sign that people are alienated from nature. They have lost the feeling how to react in certain natural events. We here on Svalbard are much more used to extreme weather and know how to react. But in Germany, the UK and all of continetal Europe you have to tell people not go into the woods during a gale, not to park your car under trees etc. One should naturally do that.
    Anyway, I know you know how to behave.

    • Dear Per Magnus,
      you are absolutely right. People rather look at the weather forecast on the net or on the TV than look out of their window. That has so quickly changed. When our Master and Dina were children, they knew how to read and react to weather conditions, nowadays children need their phone for doing it. Anyway, we will not change that. Therefore they know other stuff we have problems with.
      We absolutely agree that everything – not only nature phenomenons – will be amazingly exaggerated today. In former times we just enjoyed nature here, nowadays it’s idealised and heightened, organisations are formed to celebrate nature. No one is allowed to have a natural and normal relationship with nature. After all, it is not nature that one enjoys, but the idea of nature that dictates how one should encounter it. This is the pinnacle of alienation from nature.
      Well, there is lots more to say about it. But maybe another time.

  20. It was eerily still yesterday, the calm before the storm, but full on gales at 7 am woke me up. Hardly any rain. Still very windy, but not as noisy in the house. Hope you don’t suffer any damage.

      thank you very much for asking, besides the felting on the roof of our garden shed that flew away everything is fine. We were lucky.
      We had the peak of the gale just an hour ago. Fortunately, it wasn’t as extreme as expected but eery.
      Now the wind is blowing out and the sun is shining.

  21. Während ich Euch Fabs schreibe und England die Daumen halte, dass Eunice es nicht wegweht, hoffentlich habt Ihr die Insel gut verzurrt. Mein Sandsteintürmchen im Fernreisetraumziel Ostwestfalen-Lippe wackelt, vibriert und trutzt dem Sturm, es arbeitet, knarzt, heult, johlt und pfeift. Siri und Selma sind Feen und somit der Windgesänge kundig, wenn sie nicht gepennt haben wie ich als kleine Schulfee im Fach: Windmusikwissenschaften
    Fliegt nicht weg und bringt dem Meeresgott ein Landopfer, darf auch ein Apfel sein, er mag gerne grüne.

      The wind is not as fierce in towns as here where it can develop to full strength over the sea. But it’s okay, we have had experienced worse.

    • Good question. The five species of UK butterflies that hibernate over winter will be tucked up in nooks and crannies in trees or buildings and deep in thick ivy or the like and will sit it out ’till the warmer weather. If it turns bad they will return to these hidey holes.
      Those that winter as caterpillars or pupae are tough creatures and can withstand storms.

  24. Our National Weather Service reposted several reports from your meteorological agency, filled with facts and figures: it’s a strong storm, indeed. Still, your photos capture its spirit in a different and even more impressive way. When I began sailing, one of the things I learned was to gauge wind speed by the appearance of the water; the Beaufort Scale was preferred, and it was quite useful. I’d say that you’re easily in the Force Ten range, and that reminds me of the classic tale of the disastrous 1979 Fastnet ocean sailing race off the coast of Ireland: Fastnet, Force Ten.

    I enjoyed the selection of poetry, as well. I remembered ‘wuthering’ from Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights, but never had seen the word used elsewhere. The Cambridge Dictionary tells me “wuthering” or “whithering” comes from the Old Norse and means roaring like the wind on a stormy day. I’d say that makes your poetry selection perfect!

  26. Wir fuhren gestern mit dem Auto nach Baden-Würtemberg, um in ein Museum zu gehen.
    Anlässlich eines Festtages.
    Der Sturm war so, daß ich nach einem Drittel der Strecke umkehren wollte. Meine Frau schalt mich. Doch versuchte ich es noch einige km. Es wurde dann aber handhabbarer.
    Nach gut 2 Stunden Fahrt waren wir vor Ort. Regen und Wind.
    Wir waren glücklich, wieder etwas unternommen zu haben.

    Die Rückfahrt war dann weniger schwierig.

  27. Noch etwas: Ich verlor ja bei einem der Stürme im Vorjahr eine große Keramik, die mich viele Stunden Arbeit, zudem in Etappen, gekostet hatte. So ein Sturm haut selbst eine gut stehende Keramik um.
    Nach einiger Zeit warf ich die Scherben nicht weg, sondern klebte mit einem Spezialkleber das Stück wieder zusammen, denn die Idee der Skulptur war ja nicht beschädigt, nur die makellose Gestalt durch die Sprünge und etwas Abrieb an den Rissen selbst.

  28. Haltet aus, you fabulous four. Die Nachrichten von heftigen Ausmaßen des Sturms gerade im Südwesten Englands haben uns erreicht. Deutschlands Norden wird es wohl heute Nacht besonders treffen. Bleibt drinnen, harrt aus, stay safe.

      ja, wir bleiben drinnen und machen es uns dort gemütlich. Auf alle Fälle haben wir viele Kerzen bereitliegen und viel trockenes Kaminholz. Aber es scheint uns so, dass die Abstände zwischen Böen größer werden. Rausgehen werden wir auf keinen Fall.
      Wir halten aus und werden uns nachher in unsere Sauna im Garten verkrümeln. Das hat etwas Abenteuerliches Orkan und schwitzend dessen Auswirkungen sehen und ihn hören.
      Dann hoffen wir, dass Deutschlands Küsten dem Windansturm gut und unbeschadet überstehen.

      I am not really tough but I had to wear this T-shirt because of that blue. Hard life as a model 😉
      We will survive this gale. Until now only the roof felting of one of our sheds flew away but that’s all and not a big disaster.
      I read it’s the strongest wind that hit the UK with gusts of more than 150 km/h (about 90 mph) for more than 30 years. One can’t stand outside.

  31. Reading through the comments it sounds like the storm is moving on. From what sometimes seems a very great distance we have seen friends braving the winds on the south coast and blocked roads in the north. Hopefully peace and calm tomorrow.

      actually, it was quite exciting watching the storm from a cosy room. Now we have no wind. We are happy that we hardly have any damage. With those high winds on the beach two days ago it was a lot of fun. We played with the wind safely.
      We watched some of the Olympics. Dina is always very happy when the Norwegians get a medal. They got quite a lot.

  37. I hope your house and garden and yourselves are ok. The waves on the pictures are strong and that was before. Staying at home was the best to do. Here in London we just had some fence panels in the road, otherwise where I am – we were lucky. Others unfortunately were not do lucky in the country. I feel for them. My sister said it was terrible in Germany too, but they are ok. They drove from Reutlingen to Munich. In Munich it was a lot less stormy than in Reutlingen. Hopefully it is over now. Keep safe all of you! ♥

  44. How excitng! Love those muddy waves. One of my favorite experiences is being far at sea, on big ships, in category 5 storms. The awesome power of nature puts us in our places and brings up feeling of total awe. Stay safe under a blanket, with the fairies, and marvel at Mother Nature’s fury! She has such a right to be angry!! Enjoy.

    • We are like you, we love storms on big ships far at sea as well. When we lived in Montreal we went nearly every October by ship to Germany and back in November. We several times were hit by quite a gale. We loved it and were lucky not to get seasick. Well, we always eat a lot of ginger when travelling, we love it. I was told, it’s the best remedy against seasickness, but we didn’t know that then.

      hier haben wir alles gut überstanden. Selbst die alten Bäume in unserem Garten haben sich wacker gehalten. Nun hat der Wind sich verausgabt, alles ist völlig ruhig.

  46. Eine Wortschöpfung bei uns ist „Sturmwichteln“. Man solle die Dinge, die einem nicht mehr gefallen, einfach dem Sturm mitgeben und sich überraschen lassen, was im eigenen Garten landet. Hier sind es überwiegend Trampoline, die sich gerne selbständig machen. Mein Bruder, leider schon verstorben, wäre jetzt sicher auf dem Weg an die Ostsee. Nach solchen Stürmen hat er besonders viele und große Bernsteine gefunden.

      hier sind es die Karneole und der Jet, die man bei Ebbe nach Stürmen findet und bes. leicht sieht, wenn die Sonne scheint und sie einem entgegen glitzern.
      Bei uns im Garten ist nichts gelanet, von uns ist auch nichts weggeflogen, selbst die weggerissene Dachpappe vom Schuppen landede auf unserem Kompost.
      “Sturmwichteln” – welch schönes Wort, das wir nie zuvor gehört haben.

    • The 1987 and 89 storms were exhilarating but sadly alot got damaged. I was in London on the second one, got blown off my feet, bottom of Edgeware Road and a policeman managed to get us both into a red telephone box to shelter for a bit…very funny moment. It took me three hours to cross from The City..my husband then was an engineer and working on a build that the police had taped off as unsafe. Here in France it’s not too windy..we are in 23, cow country.

    • Danke, liebe Martina, ja, wir haben alles bestens überstanden. Es war ja auch aufregend. Sturm am Meer ist schon besonders. Man ist hier auf Stürme eingestellt, und wir haben bereits so manche überstanden. Allerdings dieser Sturm war besonders heftig mit Böen von über 170 km/h. In solchem Wind kann man nicht stehen.
      Toll, dass dir Dinas Bilder gut gefallen.

  50. Playing it safe is always the right move to make whenever storms like this blows in.
    More than anything else, you want to keep yourself and loved ones from danger, and it sounds very possible here!

  55. everything only moderately damaged up here, storm surge only by 3.70 instead of 4.50m, only garbage cans learned to fly! that was to cope, but what threatens from the east with unleashed Russians – makes really afraid!!! greetings to all and stay safe and sound…

      The next storm is forcasted here for tomorrow. But we are used to high winds and our flood protection proved to be very effective. We are never endangered if we have a SW wind as in the storm series right now. So we feel quite safe right now – but not concerning the situation at the Ukrainian border.

  60. Wonderful images! The story is told so well by beginning with the picture of Klaus looking out the window, then including the waves, the birds, the boy…and now it’s over. Didn’t you have several storms, or was that somewhere else?

      you are right, we had three storms, a storm every second day last week. Fortunately, only the second storm was extraordinary wild. It was eery and exciting at the same time. Dina’s pictures are taken at the end of the first storm. Thank you very much for liking therm.

      bis auf zwei kleine Schäden haben wir alles bestens überstanden. Das eine ist typisch und zwar flog die Dachpappe eines unserer Gartenschuppen weg und zum anderen hatten wir Schäden an der Dachrinne unseres Wintergartens. Das wird die Tage repariert. Nun haben wir seit den Stürmen wunderbares Wetter. Am Tag scheint die Sonne von morgens bis abends und Nachts friert es leicht. Wir lieben solch ein Wetter.
      Wir hoffen, bei dir ist auch alles fein.

  65. Hello Fab Four! I mostly dropped in to check on my favorite bloggers from Cley. I am so glad to hear you are all well. After we have large storms up here in the Pacific Northwest, we sometimes find rare and odd items on the beach (glass balls from Japanese fishing nets are most prized) Have you found any new treasures post-storm?

      we find big wooden beams from jetties and carnelions and jet on our coast. A lot of folks is looking for these precious stones after a big storm. We don’t find many bigger items except many fish boxes from Norway and the Netherlands and amazingly many single shoes.

    Als ich, ich glaube es war der 24., oder 25., deinen Beitrag das erste Mal “quergelesen” habe, war mein Ad-hoc-Gedanke: “Awaiting Storm in Ukraine”. Einige Passagen deiner Zeilen, wie “Militär in Alarmbereitschaft”, wären ohne weiteres übertragbar. Na ja, gewissermaßen hat mir mein Brägen in dem Moment, unter dem Eindruck der aktuellen Ereignisse, gewissermaßen meinen Blickwinkel verstellt.
    Zeyneb war hier bei uns an der Ostsee wohl nur halb so schlimm wie Eunice bei euch an der Nordsee. Na ja, und weil der Wind vom Westen stürmte, hat er das Wasser aus der Bucht rausgedrückt, mit Wellen war also nix. Aber irgendwann haben wir auch wieder Sturm aus Ost, Nordost 😉
    Nee, Spaß beiseite: Wichtig ist, dass sich die Sachschäden in Grenzen halten und möglichst keine Menschen zu Schaden kommen.
    Bis gleich, ich bin noch nicht fertig 😉

      uns ist das gar nicht aufgefallen, dass der Sturm auch metaphorisch gesehen werden kann. Es wäre so schön gewesen, wenn der Sturm über der Ukraine auch keine nennenswerte Schäden hinterlassen würde, aber das ist weit gefehlt.
      Zeyneb, komischer Name, war schon heftig, aber da wir in der Westwindzone an einer Ostküste wohnen, bekommen wir es nicht ganz so schlimm ab wie an den Küsten der West Counties hier. Und wir sind auch sturmerprobt.
      Seit dem Sturm scheint hier täglich wunderbar die Sonne und wir verbringen die meiste Zeit im Garten, der nun eine Augenweide ist.
