Season’s Greetings

Another year has passed. There were many changes, good and bad. Siri 🙂 and 🙂 Selma recommended us to leave the bad ones unmentioned “everyone is bombarded with them by the media anyway“.
Since we live in England, let’s start with the weather. We enjoyed many sunny warm days especially in spring and autumn so we did a lot of gardening and there was also an adventure with our canoes. Blue-eyed and were proud, we paddled our new canoes far out in the spring but, oh dear, when we returned we could only land in the silt that threatened to swallow us. Muddy from top to bottom, we escaped Grendel’s dwelling, who, according to the Old English epic poem “Beowulf,” lives in such mud holes and eats people.

Wieder ist ein Jahr vorbei. Viele Veränderungen gab es, gute und schlechte. Siri 🙂 und 🙂 Selma empfahlen uns die schlechten einfach unerwähnt zu lassen “mit denen wird doch eh jeder durch die Medien bombardiert“. 
Da wir in England leben, fangen wir mit dem Wetter an. Wir genossen viele sonnig warme Tage besonders im Frühjahr und Herbst, so dass wir viel im Garten werkelten und ein Abenteuer mit unseren Kanus gab es auch. Blauäugig wie stolz paddelten wir im Frühjahr mit unseren neuen Kanus weit hinaus, aber, oh weh, als wir zurückkamen, konnten wir nur im Schlick anlanden, der uns zu verschlingen drohte. Schlammig von oben bis unten entkamen wir Grendels Behausung, der nach dem altenglischen Epos „Beowulf“ in solchen Schlammlöchern lebt.

Dina and Masterchen are at the age when you start talking about your health. Our dear Dina had a terrible cold with a bloodcurdling cough for six weeks, which went away with pleurisy. Our Master in bold overconfidence thought himself immune. However, when Dina was well again, he began to snort and sneeze, which then also turned into a barking cough.

Dina und Masterchen sind in dem Alter, in dem man sich über seine Gesundheit auslässt. Unser liebes Dinalein hatte sechs Wochen lang eine fürchterliche Erkältung mit markerschütterndem Husten, die sich mit einer Rippenfellentzündung verabschiedete. Masterchen in kühner Selbstüberschätzung hielt sich für immun. Als jedoch Dina wieder wohlauf war, begann er zu schnauben und zu niesen, was dann ebenfalls in bellenden Husten überging.

Dina fell even more in love this year with the giant grey seals at Blakeney Point, which she portrayed and covered in podcasts and interviews. Her photos were published in newspapers and magazines.
Masterchen let his publisher persuade him to write a lot of text for a multimedia project. At the beginning of the year he announced with conviction: “I’m free of all obligations now, no, I won’t work again!” We didn’t believe him right away. And so we see him every morning with steaming coffee contentedly writing for two to three hours. What the seals are for Dina are the symbols for him.

Dina verliebte sich noch mehr dieses Jahr in die riesigen Kegelrobben am Blakeney Point, die sie fein portraitierte und über die sie in Podcasts und Interviews berichtete. Ihre Fotos wurden in Zeitungen und Zeitschriften veröffentlicht.
Masterchen ließ sich von seiner Verlegerin überreden, viele Texte für ein Multimedia Projekt zu schreiben. Noch Anfang des Jahres verkündete er im Brustton der Überzeugung: „Ich bin jetzt frei von allen Verpflichtungen, nee, wieder zu arbeiten tu ich mir nicht an!“ Wir trauten gleich dem Braten nicht. Und so sehen wir ihn allmorgendlich mit dampfenden Kaffee zufrieden für zwei bis drei Stunden schreiben. Was für Dina die Seehunde sind für ihn die Symbole.

In the spring we were in Germany, from where we picked up beautiful things from Dina’s former apartment that filled our Volvo to the roof. Among them was Juli Zeh’s novel “Gaming Instinct“, which Masterchen read with enthusiasm. Later in the year, we all read Karl Ove Knausgård’s “The Morning Star“. We liked the way he tells everyday things in an exciting way. In “Inadvertent“, which we read later, he speaks to Masterchen from the soul in his emphasis on the importance of form in writing. In contrast, we found Orhan Pamuk’s new novel, “Nights of Plague“, at times topical but rather lengthy. What gave us much to talk about was Matthew Battles` book “Palimpsest“. Like Claude Levi-Strauss, Battles argues that writing constricts us because it pushes us in a certain direction.
And, what we think is more than great, we read ghost stories and other stories to ourselves in bed again.

Im Frühjahr waren wir in Deutschland, von wo wir Schönes aus Dinas frühere Wohnung holten, das unseren Volvo bis unter das Dach hin füllte. Dabei war Juli Zehs Roman „Spieltrieb“, den Masterchen mit Begeisterung las. Später im Jahr lasen wir alle Karl Ove Knausgårds „Der Morgenstern“. Uns gefiel, wie er Alltägliches spannend erzählt. In „Inadvertent“, das wir danach lasen, spricht er Masterchen aus der Seele in seiner Betonung der Wichtigkeit der Form beim Schreiben. Orhan Pamuks neuen Roman „Die Nächte der Pest“ fanden wir zwar aktuell, aber bisweilen ziemlich langatmig. Was uns viel zu bereden gab, war Matthew Battles` Buch „Palimpsest“. Wie Claude Levi-Strauss vertritt Battles die Ansicht, dass die Schrift uns einengt, da sie uns in eine bestimmte Richtung drängt.
Und, was wir gaaaanz toll, finden, wir lesen uns wieder im Bett Geister- und andere Geschichten vor.

The best is now at the end: Our Master and Dina got married at the beginning of October.

    • Ich hatte meine Einnahmen als Autor in einem und später zwei Großstadtbuchläden auf der Hauptstraße investiert. Allerdings hatte ich wenig Zeit dort im Verkauf oder überhaupt vor Ort zu sein. Wenn es mal der Fall war, hat es mir stets viel Spaß gemacht. Ich spielte schon als Kind leidenschaftlich gern mit meinem Kaufmannsladen.
      Buchladen in einem Kaff wäre mir zu frustrierend. Obwohl so etwas Ähnliches mache ich jetzt. Dina und ich organisieren hier die Bücherecke für unsere Dorfgemeinschaft. Da verwalten wir immerhin über 10.000 Bücher, versuchen sie fein zu präsentieren und sind froh, wenn wir viele Bücher bekommen und viele mitgenommen werden. Das Besondere ist jedoch, dass hier viele berühmte Schriftsteller leben. So ist der Buchaustausch interessant.
      In Deutschland gibt es, glaube ich, auch so etwas, diese Stellen, wo man Bücher hinbringt und sich welche holen kann.

    • Ja, es gibt inzwischen viele Bücherschränke, ich habe selbst einen Großteil der Bücher meiner Eltern an einen gespendet (hätte absolut keinen Platz dafür gehabt). Ich wünschte nur, wir hätten in der Gegend ein richtig schönes Antiquariat, das fehlt mir echt.

Das liest sich alles, bis auf die schlimme Erkältung von Dina so schön und zum Schluss dann noch die wunderschöne Botschaft der Heirat von Masterchen und Dina, wozu ich nun ganz herzlich gratuliere!!     Sadly, we both have a bad case of Covid-19, and have had to cancel all Christmas plans. And poor Ollie has Colitis, so is on a course of antibiotics.

      I like writing every morning for two hours after breakfast, it gives the day a structure I like. That`s easy because I have enough time to do things I like. More time consuming was negotiating the contracts for print editions, apps, and other electronic use. But this is done.
      We love married life as well, although it didn`t change that much as we lived together like married for more than ten years.

    At first you get us nervous telling of illnesses (and boy could I relate as I’m still recovering from pneumonia), you educate us with your new books, you calm us down by letting us in on the fact that Master continues with his love of working, Dina with her seals too, and carefully slide in that Hanne and Klausbernd got married!!! How could you hold that in for so long and not lead with that? haha, you are too much!

      what an extraordinary comment we really like. We read it out loud or Siri 🙂 and 🙂 Selma several times. They couldn`t read it themselves as they are sitting in our Christmas tree scrutinising all the parcel we put down under it.
      We hope you recover very, very soon from your pneumonia. We cross our fingers for you 🤞🤞
      Tonight all our neighbours are meeting in the church for mulled wine – as a wine merchant lives here it`s really made of good wine with Cointreau – and the traditional mince pies we don`t like them that much but there will be other food as well. There will be real candle light, no electric light, what we really like.

    Nun habt Ihr was lange bereits lange währte, auch höchst offiziell, formell und schriftlich. Wie war das zu viert beim Standesamt? Selma warf vielleicht Feenglitzerstaub und Siri sang mit ihrer schönsten Feenstimme? So oder so ähnlich. Juli Zehs Spieltrieb habe ich 2005 in einem einzigen gierigen Haps verschlungen; an einem Tag- so sehr hat mich ihr Buch gefesselt…
    Fein; dass ihr wieder gesund seid. Ihr lest Euch vor dem Schlafengehen Geschichten vor…? Das klingt zum Verlieben schön…

      wir wussten gar nicht, dass Siri 🙂 so fein singen kann und waren fürbass erstaunt. Beide hatte sich so fayriefein ausstaffiert, voll lieb. Wir waren ganz gerührt.
      Wie lieben das Geschichten Vorlesen sehr. Masterchen lernte vor vielen Jahren, wie man anmutig Texte vorträgt und wir hören ihn soooo gerne zu. Zur Zeit lesen wir uns das Buch einer Nachbarin und Bekannten vor, von Susan Hill “The Woman in Black”, eine Geistergeschichte, die wie uns auch als Film die Tage ansehen werden.

  42. So viele Glückwünsche, da müssen Ehe, Weihnachten, das neue und alle folgenden Jahre einfach gut werden. Vorsichtshalber schließe ich mich aber auch noch all den Vorschreibern an, ein Glückwunsch mehr kann ja nicht schaden. Also: Lebt weiter wie bisher, denn das hat ja offensichtlich sehr gut funktioniert, ergänzt und bereichert euch, bleibt neugierig aufeinander und auf die Welt. Gute Laune für ein fröhliches Weihnachtsfest ist sicherlich vorhanden. Und das neue Jahr? Nun ja, mag es friedvoll werden und gesund.

    danke fuer diesen Jahrsueberblick und Eure guten Wuensche und lieben Gruesse. Aber jetzt muss ich mich doch einmal ganz schlimm beklagen: da habt Ihr im Oktober geheiratet und erzaehlt erst jetzt davon?! Aber sowas! 😉
    Mit ziemlicher Verspaetung, aber deswegen umso herzlicher, unsere Glueckwuensche dazu! 👏🏼✨✨👏🏼
    Und wir sind froh, dass Dina wieder gesund ist. Das hoert sich ja ganz schlimm an. Und Du. lieber Klausbernd, hast Deinen Husten hoffentlich auch hinter Dir und bellst nicht mehr.

    P.S.: Covid haben Mary und ich gut ueberstanden, aber vor ein paar Tagen hat Mary sich die Grippe eingefangen und ist jetzt ganz muede und schlapp. Ihr bisher sehr schlimmer Husten scheint sich aber ganz langsam zu legen.

    • Good morning, dear Pit,
      wir haben das mit der Heirat ziemlich minimalistisch gestaltet, ohne Feier, nur ein feines Mahl in einem Restaurant. Wir haben übrigens in Kings Lynn geheiratet, wo das Standesamt für unsere Küste liegt. Das ist eine alte Hansestadt, die auch Geburtsort des Captain Vancouver ist, der von dort aus Expeditionen in weiten Gebiete Kanadas leitete. So fanden wir es angemessen, in Vancouver Hall getraut zu werden. Nach ihm ist die Stadt Vancouver benannt.
      Dina ist wieder völlig gesund und ich habe mich auch gebessert 🙂
      Wir wünschen euch Gesundheit und Frohsinn und dass Marys Grippe bald verschwindet.

    • Bei einer Heirat ist es die Hauptsache, dass man die Feier so gestaltet, wie man es gern hat, lieber Klausbernd. Ich haette mir bei unserer Heirat auch eine kleine, ziemlich private Feier vorstellen koennen, aber hier in Rexas ist eben Alles etwas groesser. *grins* Dabei war unsere Feier fuer die Gegend dort noch relativ klein. wir hatten “nur” 175 Gaeste. Dort in Karnes County mit vielen Leuten polnischer und mexikanischer Abstammung ist Alles unter 500 Personen noch klein! 😄
      Es freut mich, dass Dina wieder auf dem Damm ist und dass auch Du auf dem Wege der Besserung bist – wie auch Mary. Ihr geht es von Tag zu Tag besser.

    • Du glaubst es ja kaum, lieber Pit, wir feierten nur mit vier Freunden und mit Siri 🙂 und 🙂 Selma. Uns hat es gefallen.
      Bei dem Bilderbuchwetter – 2 Grad C und Sonnenschein – werden wir nun einen Boxingday-Walk zum Meer machen und Touristen gucken. Tourist Watching ist ja ganz witzig.
      Masterchen hustet nur noch selten. So ist alles fein.

      das Wichtigste ist, unter Freunden zu feiern. Auf die Zahl kommt es dabei nicht an.
      “Tourist Watching” – das ist mal etwas Neues! *lach* Wirklich witzig!
      Hier ist auch strahlender Sonnenschein, aber es ist viel waermer als bei Euch: 11 Grad. Wir machen uns heute einen ganz gemuetlichen Tag. Am Nachmittag und Abend werden Marys Kinder und ihre Cousine hier sein, auch zum Abendessen [pork roast]. Und fuer die Weihnachtsgeschenke. Wir machen die ausnahmsweise erst heute auf.

    • Guten Tag, lieber Pit,
      heute habe ich wie in Abrahams Schoß bis halb 11 seligst geschlafen. Der Husten ist fast völlig verschwunden. Wir hoffen, dass Marys Husten auch wie der Rauch im Wind flott verschwindet.
      Bei uns gab es die Weihnachtsgeschenke, wie in Deutschland üblich, abends am heiligen Abend. Ich bekam u.a. einen lässig chicken Blazer, den ich gestern Abend gleich anzog, als wir Gäste unterhielten.
      Heute ist ein ruhiger Tag. Jetzt scheint die Sonne und vielleicht gehen wir noch etwas heraus.

    • Lieber Klausbernd,
      ganz so lange habe ich heute Morgen nicht geschlafen, aber doch ungewoehnlich lange fuer mich, bis nach 9 Uhr. Schoen, dass dein Husten sich langsam aber sicher abmeldet. Bei Mary ist es genauso. Danke fuer die guten Wuensche.
      Bei uns gab es die Weihnachtsgeschenke erst gestern. Wir haben auf Marys Tochter gewartet, die erst vorgestern am Abend aus Kalifornien angekommen ist. Sie musste ihre Reise ein wenig verschieben, weil sie sich Covid eingefangen hatte. Gestern hatten wir auch unser weihnachtliches Festessen: Schweinerollbraten. LECKER!
      Hier ist es heute auch sonnig und warm, 16,5 Grad. Und in den naechsten Tagen soll das Thermometer bis auf 24 steigen.

    • Lieber Pit,
      da hoffen wir, dass es feine Geschenke gab.
      Masterchen pflegt im Winter stets bis 9h zu schlafen, da er meistens bis 1h oder 2h im Bett gemütlich liest. Vorher lesen wir uns meist Geschichten vor. Im Winter haben wir einen Nachtrhythmus. Allerdings zieht es uns im Sommer oftmals bereits um 8h aus dem Bett. Da wir von Rentnern umzingelt sind, fängt hier das Leben täglich relativ spät an. Selbst Handwerker erscheinen nicht vor 10h. Uns kommt das sehr gelegen.
      Hier ist es auch unangenehm warm geworden, leicht über zehn Grad, was völlig ungewöhnlich für diese Jahreszeit ist.

      es gab feine Geschenke! Buecher, Kleidung und Kaffee, Kaffee und nochmals Kaffee. 😉 Fuer mich ja immer ein prima Geschenk.
      Schlafen tue ich in der letzten Zeit auch relativ lange und auch ziemlich viel. Mehr als frueher, denke ich. Ob das mit Covid zusammenhaengt? Es ist naemlich erst nach Covid so. Handwerker erscheinen hier oft schon um 8. Da muss ich dann den Wecker stellen.

      P.S.: kurz vor Weihnachten haben wir uebrigens unsere in 2019 stornierte Irlandreise fix gemacht. Wir sind, wenn – hoffentlich Alles gut geht – im April fuer 4 Wochen in Irland. Wir freuen uns schon riesig drauf.

    • Guten Morgen, lieber Pit
      und was für ein schöner Morgen, Sonnenschein, windstill, 5 Grad C. Hanne-Dina ist eben mit dem Boot eines Freundes zu den Seehundbänken gefahren. Sie will sich alles noch einmal genau anschauen, wo sie Anfang Januar bei einem Naturfilm mitmacht.
      Witzig, die Geschenke waren bei mir ähnlich, ein schicker Blazer, viele Bücher über Polarexpeditionen, teilweise sehr seltene, aber keinen Kaffee. Dina ist bei uns die Kaffeetante.
      Wir werden wohl im Frühjahr in den Norden Schottlands fahren, wenn wir überhaupt wegfahren. Zurzeit haben wir nämlich keinerlei Lust zu verreisen. Insgesamt hat bei uns die Lust zu verreisen seit Corona nachgelassen. Huch, wir werden richtig bieder nach der Devise zu Hause ist es doch am schönsten.
      Irland ist sehr schön, den Urlaub werdet ihr sicher genießen.

Actually it is the third time around for me, but I have been in an out of internet when we traveled to Ottawa earlier this month and I wanted to have time to reflect on your thoughts for 2022 before I responded. It has been a remarkable year and I am looking forward to what comes next in 2023. As Meister Eckhart reminded me (although I’m certain that something has been lost in the translation)“And suddenly you know: It’s time to start something new and trust the magic of beginnings.”

    Hanne-Dina – thank you for sharing your gift of photography with the world. Every photo tells a story that gives hope in the midst of an uncertain time. You remind us of the beauty of this earth – that is ours to enjoy, that it must be protected at all cost.

    Klausbernd- your writing has brought meaning to my personal journey. The Enneagram workbook (I have it on Kindle and in paperback format) has been an invaluable resource which I will take with me into 2023. You have given me much to consider and learn. I am glad that you continue writing.

    Siri & Selma – thank you for shining light in the darkness with your fairy dust. Your enthusiasm for life is inspiring.

    You mentioned Beowulf! I have found a new translation by Maria Dahvana Headley that I am currently reading. I am glad that you escaped escaped Grendel’s dwelling.

      thank you so much for your kind words.
      Indeed, we were a bit lazy blogging. We just didn`t feel like and had so many other thing to do. But we decided that we will blog again regularly in the new year. We have to admit we needed this break because we ran out of ideas and we don`t like to take part in these challenges where a topic is provided. It`s funny writing every day for about two hours for my publisher gives me a lot of ideas beyond this project about symbols.
      I am very happy that you like my Enneagram Workbook. There was even another of my Enneagram books published by Element Publ. in the US and Canada. Unfortunately Element went bust several years ago.
      Meister Eckhart was quite modern in his believe that all our concepts of God say a lot about us but not that much about God. In a way he was a kind of heretic (like a lot of mystics during the high middle ages were).
      Wishing you and all your family all the best for the new year, health, happiness, and success. May our friendship go on flourishing in 2023.

    • Thank you Klausbernd!! My father was very interested in the teachings of Meister Eckhart. Before my Father passed he suggested that I would enjoy reading about the mystics. His last gift to me was “The Essential Writings of Christian Mysticism” by Bernard McGinn. I have not yet opened the book, but perhaps 2023 will be the right time.

      I haven`t read Bernard McGinn although he is seen as one of the specialists of late middle eval mystics.

      Indeed, we were quite lucky that last year wasn`t a bad one for us. The colds are gone , Dina is busy as a seal warden. The season ends next week. All the grey seals are gone then but there are the smaller harbour seal around all the year.
