I can hardly believe it, Siri 🙂 and 🙂 Selma attend dance class voluntarily. I felt that being sent to dance class as a teenager was torture. After enduring this procedure two or three times, I escaped to the pub nearby, making my parents believe that I was practising not to step on girls’ feet.

Kick off your shoes and get ready to dance in the mud.
However, it was different with Siri 🙂 and 🙂 Selma. On Dina’s wise advice, they put on their finest white fairy dresses and took dancing lessons with the Spoonbills. Sure, as you can see from Dina’s pictures, spoonbills make great dance teachers because of their long legs and almost as long necks. And they love to show off their skills.

Follow me and the music:
Scientifically, they are called Platalea leucorodia, whereby the genus name ‘platalea‘ refers to their broad beak or, as Selma 🙂 thinks, that they have a big mouth. I’m very happy about that big mouth, because it means I can recognise them straight away as a birdwatcher-dummy. The spoonbills belong to the same family as the child-bearing storks, which are also easily recognisable as such.

They were brought to Dina’s attention because the birdwatching community is going crazy because they have little ones in our Nature Reserve, which our two Bookfayries call ‘the teaspoons’. This is very special as only a few spoonbills breed in the UK. Cley and the adjoining Salthouse Marshes are some of the few places where spoonbills can be seen. They are monogamous for one season, which Siri 🙂 and 🙂 Selma find handy. The ‘teaspoons’ are born without the spoon shape of their beak. This develops with age.

But now I watch them doing their dance, which Siri 🙂 and 🙂 Selma with her friends Hildi and Hulda trying to copy without losing their balance and, of course, our dear Dina is photographing all this.
With warm greetings from the sunny sea

So many reasons why I love this post. Good to know it wasn’t just American children thrown into ‘cotillion’ (aka dance classes), though I loved it so much I bought a dance studio and danced professionally. As one qualified to say this–you’re right about your new teachers!
And what an inspired term ‘the teaspoons’.

I got these lessons from my grandparents who were crazy enough to read books about the right behaviour in every situation. Funnily enough they thought of themselves as being eccentrics. But this and these lessons at the dancing school was too much for me. On the other hand I usually know what the appropriate behaviour is and much more important where it is appropriate not to follow this rules.

I very much enjoyed your spoonbill post and the accompanying (if somewhat edited!) music. I’m linking to a post I did some time ago that featured OUR version of spoonbills here in the southern US. Here are are a beautiful pink color (aka roseate spoonbills) which I’ve been told is due to the fish they eat. They look much the same except for their coloring. I did not know that they do not have their full bills until they mature so thanks for that! For some reason, ABBA is particularly popular with Australians. Nice use of their (adapted) lyrics. We have a resident spoonbill, and lately I have noticed two, but whether or not they are partners is a mystery to me, as I have never seen their offspring. Ours is slightly different. In this article you will see a photo of their mating plumage.

Extraordinary images, Dina, wow! So many truly captivating poses, some elegant, many awkward in a beautiful way. The ruffled feathers are a treat. I love seeing the bill from different angles so we can see how thin it is from the side, as opposed to that wild flat spoon shape from above. You have outdone yourself with these. They’re lively, unusual, and so enjoyable to see. The dancing theme is perfect! Have a wonderful weekend!

Thank you very much, dear Lynn
these spoonbills are very special birds because of the funny shape of their bills. You see them here in their breeding plumage.
Wishing you a wonderful weekend

I love Hanne’s photography. The combination of song and dance with the Spoonbill’s moves was ingenious. What a fun blog you have!

What fun and how delightful! Interesting too to compare these beautiful spoonbills with our African spoonbills (Platalea alba). ‘Dancing Queen’ definitely has stood up to the test of time!

Indeed, our spoonbills here are shiny white with a black beak with a little orange at the end. The spoonbills Dina photographed are in breeding plumage.
We are Scandinavian (Dina is Norwegian, our Master grew up in Sweden and we love the North) and still like ABBA.
Wishing you a wonderful weekend
