Hello, dear readers!
Here are Siri and Selma reporting from Gladstone’s Library in the little Welsh village of Hawarden, where we are spending a few glorious days with Dina and Klausbernd. We are rather proud of ourselves for discovering this extraordinary place: Britain’s only residential library, home to thousands upon thousands of books, housed in a magnificent building with Jacobean-style architecture.
Some people dream of spending a night in a castle, others long for a luxury hotel with a spa, swimming pool and fluffy bathrobes. We have always wanted to sleep in a library. Just imagine! Going to bed knowing that thousands of books are sleeping under the same roof. No need to count sheep when you can count books instead.
Gladstone’s Library was the vision of the well-read Victorian statesman William Ewart Gladstone, a man who believed that books should be shared, read and loved. A gentleman after our bookfairy hearts! We have rented a lovely little apartment in the library for a few days. It is the perfect retreat for enthusiastic bookworms.
At this very moment, we are sitting in the sunlit Reading Room, surrounded by books, quietly tapping away at this post. Dina and Klausbernd are equally enchanted. We suspect that if heaven is a library, it might look rather like this. But there is one small problem. With so many books waiting to be discovered, how are we ever going to leave?
Tell us, dear readers: If you could spend a night anywhere unusual, would you choose a castle, a lighthouse, a museum or would you join us and sleep in a library?
Hallo, liebe Leser
Guess who disappeared first among the shelves. Klausbernd immediately gravitated towards philosophy and literature shelves. Finding them wasn’t quite so easy, though, as the first grand library room was filled with books on theology. Gladstone was, after all, a man of considerable faith.
Selma whispered: “About fiction people used to write most books.”
Fortunately, we discovered shelves of modern novels in the Reading Room. Much more to our taste! There are several library rooms to explore, with shelves upon shelves devoted to history, biography, philosophy and all sorts of other subjects. As in any great library, it takes a little while to find your bearings. But we are clever Bookfayries, and it wasn’t long before we felt perfectly at home among the old books, happily inhaling that wonderful scent of paper, dust and centuries of accumulated wisdom. And then, we played our game: Who could find the most outrageous book title? You would be surprised what people write books about. And even more surprised that somebody actually publishes them!

The difficulty with travelling with four book lovers is that nobody ever agrees when it is time to leave a library. Fortunately, at Gladstone’s, leaving is entirely optional. You simply go upstairs and retire to your room. What a splendid arrangement!
The architecture of this library is cathedral-like — a cathedral of books. I, Selma, rather like its Gothic atmosphere. It is a little spooky, especially at night, yet at the same time, the building radiates an almost ecclesiastical serenity.
“Reading is a kind of meditation, perhaps even a form of worship — a service to the mind” muses Siri. “After all, most religions have their sacred books. Have you noticed how, when we enter a room full of books, we instinctively lower our voices? A library inspires a certain reverence, doesn’t it?”
“Indeed,” I reply. “Books offer us something increasingly rare: a permission to be still in our noisy world. To concentrate, to reflect, to let our thoughts wander without interruption. Libraries themselves, especially magnificent buildings like this one, have a remarkable ability to make us feel completely at home.”

That is the magic of Gladstone’s Library. It is grand without being intimidating, solemn without being austere, and full of the comforting presence of thousands of minds waiting patiently on the shelves. And the best part? Nobody will ever tell us that we have too many books in our bedroom. We are, after all, sleeping in a library. We gradually became aware of just how different this holiday is from an ordinary one. Usually, the four of us feel obliged to see everything, visit every attraction and squeeze as much as possible into every day, only to return home in desperate need of another holiday. Life at Gladstone’s Library, however, follows a rhythm of its own, rather like life in a monastery. Our days are gently structured around the bistro’s timetable: breakfast (fortunately not too early, as we bookworms are rather late risers), lunch and dinner. The library provides food for thought, while the bistro takes excellent care of our bodies. A perfect arrangement! We expect to return home a little wiser and considerably more relaxed.

Spending several days in a library might sound like an unusual holiday. But for us, this is real luxury. Someone makes your bed, someone serves your breakfast, and the hours in between are entirely your own. Time to read, to think, to discover, to follow an unexpected thought down another aisle of books, and to share the pleasure of reading with people who love books just as much as you do. After all, what could be more luxurious than having all the time in the world and thousands of books to fill it? We are already wondering whether we could move in permanently.
Happy reading
Siri 🙂 & 🙂 Selma

Dear Ritva
We didn’t know about this place before Siri and Selma found it in the net. We once stayed in a museum in Amriswil/CH but in a library that was much better. We thoroughly enjoyed it.
Thank you very much

That looks like the perfect holiday for you four. An amazing place indeed, and beautifully photographed too. I would prefer a castle, I have always wanted to live somewhere that had a drawbridge to pull up, and a tower to climb to view my surroundings.
Love from Beetley, Pete. x

Indeed, dear Pete, that was the perfect holiday for us. You would prefer a castle that is quite easy. We stayed several times in castles and enjoyed it very much. In Germany in an area called Münsterland you can stay in classic castles with a moat, a draw bridge and a high tower.
Next to a stay in a library we would like to stay in a lighthouse. Selma found a lighthouse in Scotland where we could do this. We’ll see, perhaps our next holiday …
Thanks and wishing yhou a happy weekend

Oh, this does seem like heaven on Earth! I had no idea a place like this existed, but now I know where I want to retire and live out my days.
So many books, too little time. 🙂

Dear Richard
We didn’t had any idea that such a place exist before Siri & Selma found it. It’s the only one in England and we suppose in Britain as well.
It’s the ideal place to retire. It’s situated in North Wales just at the border to England.
Thanks and happy weekend

Lieben Gruß an euch – Marianne

Wow – I’m at the library at least once a week, but I never thought about an option to stay there. Very interesting, and I could certainly get the appeal. Fun post.

Dear Judy
Well, we know no other library which offers accommodation and three meals a day and where they serve coffee, tea and drinks in the reading rooms. You can drown there in a world of books and forget about the world outside.
Thank you 🙏 🙏

What an incredible place! When you sleep there, do you absorb countless words by some sort of literary osmosis? What dreams you must have! Best wishes from an aspiring bookworm. Laurence.

That’s a place where you dream not only of books but also crazy stories mixed with history. It’s a place where the outside world is far away. You forget about everyday reality. Well, a dangerous place too.

That’s the only library we know of where you can rent a room with three meals a day. This book lover’s paradise seems to be something of an insider’s tip. We’ve never heard of it before. A big THANK YOU to Siri & Selma.

That looks fantastic, what a beautiful place and what a great little retreat for some peace and quiet. I would love to look around and look what books they have, read some and be pampered with not doing anything.
I’ll have to look up that place up, maybe one day I’ll check it out myself.
Thanks for this interesting post. Greetings to all 4 of you ♥

Thank you for introducing me to this amazing library! I’ve visited lovely Roman Chester on the River Dee, which is not far away but not Hawarden! What a wonderful place to stay. Your photos are glorious. Like you, I wouldn’t want to leave! Now, if you could find me such a place on a small island, no traffic, no internet….that would suit me. As long as I could walk a few miles on the shoreline each day and return to the books, well that would be heaven!
