A Morning, normal for our Norfolk
Sleepily stretching on bookshelf 3 and 4 we hear our postman. No!, not Pat who delivers huge ice cubes or a cow, but Talkative Tony who tightens the screws of the steam engine running tourist up and down the Poppy-Line.
Swifter than lightning we flutter down the shelves into our fairy garments and open the door. Immediately the poor man complains bitterly about all this paper nobody likes to read but he has to carry. “Every day! Sisyphus was nothing in comparison! Do you know that your neighbour Clever Chris down the road has two letterboxes now, the new one for undesired paper is connected directly with his bin.” After a short break our “real Norfolk postman” gets philosophical. With big gestures he describes the never ending cycle of the paper in front of his red van. Overwhelmed by the cosmic dimensions he summarises: “I carry unwanted paper which ends up in the bin to be recycled for coming back to your letterbox again, ending up in the bin … oh dear, I feel dizzy. Do you know the meaning of sustainability?”

Ein stink normaler Norfolkmorgen
Verpennt, auf Regalbrett 3 und 4 uns reckend, hören wir unseren Postboten. Nein!, nicht Pat, der riesige Eiswürfel und Kühe ausliefert, sondern unseren gesprächigen Postmann Tony, der in seiner Freizeit stolzer Schrauber an der Dampflock unserer Poppy-Line ist.
Blitzesschnell huschen wir vom Regal, rein in unsere Feenkleidchen, flugs die Tür geöffnet und schon geht’s los. Der Arme beschwert sich bitterlich über Massen von Papier, das niemand lesen will, aber er herumschleppen muss. „Täglich! Sisyphos ist nichts dagegen! Und stellt euch vor, euer Nachbar Clever Chris drüben hat schon zwei Briefschlitze eingeführt. Den rechten für Werbung mit Abgang gleich in den Papierkorb.“ Nach kurzer Pause wird unser “real Norfolk Postman” gar philosophisch, indem er großgestig vor seinem roten Wagen den ewigen Kreislauf des Papiers beschreibt. Ganz außer Atem fasst er zusammen: „Ich schleppe Papier, das sogleich die Tonne gelangt, um wieder zu neuem Papier verarbeiten zu werden, das wieder in die Tonne gelangt, um – huch, mir schwindelt! Wisst ihr eigentlich was Nachhaltigkeit ist?“

      unfortunately it is the same in Norway and in Germany, in The Netherlands, Belgium and we suppose in all the European countries as well. It keeps the paper industry, advertising companies and the mail going. Interesting is the politics of the northern countries like Finland and Sweden. They touch their woods very carefully and import a lot of wood from Russia for their paper industry.

      oh dear, it didn’t last here at the coast. It’s cloudy and only for short moments the sun breaks through.
      Today the whole village worked in the marshes cutting reeds at the channels and burn them, it was more like a village fete on muddy grounds, lots of fun with sandwitches, big bonfires and hot tea. But now were are finished for today …

Ha, wir haben versucht die Flut von Werbung abzuhalten mit diversen Aufkleber, Hinweise “Werbung unerwünscht” etc, aber der “Gegner” ist uns immer einen Schritt voraus: Jetzt kommt die Werbung eingepackt in der Tageszeitung. Wir holen die Zeitung aus dem Briefkasten und gehen gleichch damit zum Papiermüll um die Werbung auszuschütte … Wie können wir es ändern? 🙂

      oh dear, du fragst, wie diese Papierflut einzudämmen ist. Ehrlich gesagt, haben wir da keine Ahnung. Und im Geheimen müssen wir auch zugeben, dass wir Leute kennen, die diese Werbung durchgehen und danach ihr Einkaufsverhalten ausrichten. Die sind es wahrscheinlich, die diese Werbung, vom Werbenden her gesehen, rechtfertigen.

    • Dear Tone,
      Ursel asked the same question in the commentary above. We don’t know how to solve this problem, actually we don`t know how to solve both problems. The problem with those masses of unwanted paper is hard to solve – no idea. The problem with the reader, hmmm, we don’t know either. Maybe our clever Dina or Selma have an idea. We, Siri and me, think it’s a WP-problem. We will look into it and will come back to you.

    • I often have posts missing from the Reader so assume it is a WP issue. Seems quite hit and miss. I generally go and seek out those I haven’t heard from for a while in case they have just not shown up! This post appeared in mine, but I have missed the Fab Four on occasion. Frustrating, but I don’t know why it happens.

    • Den Rosetta-Stein auszuliefern ist der Traum schlafloser Nächte unseres Postboten. Immerhin hat ja bereits Postman Pat Kühe und einen Eisblock ausgeliefert. Den Rosettastein zu überbringen, wäre die Krönung des Berufslebens unseres Postboten.

      We noticed that there is more unwanted than wanted paper in our mail and it’s Selma’s task to throw all these glossy papers and advertisments straight into the bin. She likes it because that brings pocket money with which she buys printed paper which is wanted by her – well, she is a Bookfayrie. Throwing all this paper in the bin she is happyly dancing hoping that it will be recycled for books.

  15. A sad-funny post! We laughed about the cutting of trees to write about saving them. We don’t know if this is a universal problem in need of solution, but we are great fans of this: https://www.catalogchoice.org
    Direct mail is big in the U.S. However, if you don’t want to receive all those tree-killing catalogs, you can list the offenders on the site (above), and CatalogChoice advocates to stop the insanity. It has worked for us! Thanks for this post 🙂 J&A

  18. Guten Morgen, ihr lieben vier,
    ich hatte gehofft, dass mit der Werbung im Internet auch die vielen Prospekte verschwinden. Dem ist aber nicht so. Jedoch steht bei mir im Haus an fast jedem Briefkasten der Aufkleber “Bitte keine Werbung”. Vielleicht wird auch mit diesem Aufkleber die Flut an Prospekten eingedämmt.
    Ich mag diesen Aufkleber – er schont meinen Briefkasten und auch die Umwelt.

      was für ein schöner Tag: Die Sonne scheint, es ist warm, Frühling liegt in der Luft, was sich schon daran zeigt, wenn unser Postbote in T-Shirt und Shorts unterwegs ist, wenn Masterchen und wir noch dicke Jacken mit Schals tragen.
      Diesen Aufkleber “bitte keine Werbung” gibt’s zumindest in Norfolk auf dem Lande nicht. “Das müssen wir sogleich einführen!”, meinen Siri und Selma flattrig aufgeregt.

    • Guten Morgen, lieber Klausbernd, auch bei uns ist es heute ein schöner Tag mit blauem Himmel und Sonne. Wir werden auch gleich vor die Tür gehen. Jedoch drängelt Micha ein wenig, dass wir endlich mit der Beleuchtung meines Ateliers und Galerieraums zu Potte kommen. Aber bestimmt können wir Genuß und Arbeit miteinander verbinden. Ich möchte die erwachene Natur zeichnerisch und fotografisch festhalten.

      Ich war eben in den Marschen. Das ganze Dorf schnitt Ried an den Kanäle und verbrannte es. Das hatte mehr Volksfestcharakter als dass es Arbeit war. Dennoch bin ich jetzt ko.

  19. Als ehemaliger Mitarbeiter in einer großen Druckerei habe ich die Veränderungen ja hautnah miterleben dürfen. Hat das gedruckte Produkt früher einmal einen Wert gehabt, so ist es schon seit langem nur mehr die Vernichtung von wertvollen Ressourcen. Das hat es mir auch immer schwerer gemacht, mich mit den Produkten zu identifizieren. Und als sich meine Firma entschieden hatte, nur mehr Werbung zu produzieren, ist mein Verständnis dafür komplett verschwunden. Nach einem Wechsel in eine andere Berufssparte ist mein ökologisches Gewissen jetzt wieder rein. 🙂

      Hut ab! Das finden wir bewunderungswert, dass du deinem ökologischen Gewissen folgend die Berufssparte gewechselt hast. Unsere Hochachtung!
      Masterchen dachte, bevor wir diesen Artikel entwarfen, immer nur bei bedrucktem Papier an Buchdruck. Er kannte ja auch nur Clausen & Bosse in Leek. Über das unnütz bedruckte Papier hatte er sich nie zuvor Gedanken gemacht. Ja, ja, unser Postmann hat einen guten Einfluss auf ihn 😉 Seine Erdung!

    This report from Sweden is from end of last year, clearly pointing out why the distributors believe it works; the majority take a closer look:

  24. als ich Briefträgerin war, lang ist es her, schon bald gar nicht mehr wahr, aber nun gut … als ich Briefträgerin war, gab es eine Haustüre mit einem Briefschlitz auf Fusshöhe, dahinter wartete schon der Dackel, ob es wirklich einer wahr, weiss ich nicht, aber für mich war es ein Dackel, ich konnte hören, wie er die Briefe und all das andere Zeug, die ich vorne hineinschob, hinten auffing und genüsslich knurrend zerriss- so kann man auch unliebsame Post und all das Zeug loswerden …
    “bitte keine Werbung einwerfen” am Briekasten hilft ungemein, wenn auch nicht der Briefträgerin- die Post verdient einen Haufen Geld mit diesem Kram, den keiiner will und als Briefträgerin weiss man das und ärgert sich täglich über die vollen Fächer, die dann von den Papierbergen befreit werden wollen, um andere Fächer damit zu füllen- wir halten uns beschäftigt 😉

      wir dachten stets naiv, Briefträger sei ein angenehmer Beruf …
      Als Student hat Masterchen mal 2 Monate lang Post in Bochum ausgetragen. Aber damals gab’s noch nicht so viel Werbung.
      Wir nehmen an, du hast noch Schnee auf deinem Berg. Hier ist es frühlingshaft, sonnig und warm und alle Frühlingsblumen sind aufgeblüht. Deswegen sind wir jetzt mal weg, ab in den Garten …

  27. sehr wahre Worte – und sooo schön illustriert! Aber was soll ich sagen? Bin gerade auf dem Weg in die Buchhandlung meines Vertrauens und werde ganz sicher nicht mit einem eBook zurückkehren….
    Diese Seite ist übrigens wirklich klasse. Habe das erst vor kurzem so richtig wahrgenommen. Norfolk ist Feenland!

    • Dankeschön 🙂 Wir sollten verraten, dass das Illustrieren uns sehr viel Freude bereitet. Außerdem besitzen wir nicht einmal einen eBook-Reader. Wir sammeln Bücher zu bestimmten Gebieten – und müssen deswegen wohl bald anbauen.

      We love to write and illustrate such little stories. And you know why that is?
      Well, as Bookfayries we are in charge of the fairy tales. At least German fairy tales originate in short stories giving advice for acting in everyday life or/and for ethical questions. And traditionally fairy tales were nicely illustrated. You see, we Bookfayries are based on this tradition.
      We 4 became aware that we could only write about saving the trees on our blog, to print it would be this ‘contra dictu in adjectu’ 😉 But we know one publisher who sends around a lot of paper about saving the trees. We have to say, once a week reading about saving the trees is too much and those poor trees …

  32. Hallo Ihr beiben lieben Buchfeen,
    Ihr habt ja so Recht: es ist schon ein Stress mit der unerwünschten Papierflut. Hier bei uns sind es immer die Unmengen Kataloge, die uns ungefragt ins Haus flattern. [Dazu hatte ich hier schon mal gepostet: http://tinyurl.com/nde2meu%5D. Mary hängt hier ständig am Telefon, um unerwünschte Kataloge abzubestellen. Klappt auch meistens, wenn auch oft nur mit kurzem Erfolg, weil die Firmen sich wohl gegenseitig Adressen austauschen. Und aus was auch immer für anderen Gründen.
    Übrigens: den Gedanken “Today we learned …” finde ich ganz toll. Aber apropos Lernen”: was die Verschwendung von Umweltresourcen angeht, da wird die Menschheit wohl nie lernen. 😦

    • Hi, lieber Pit,
      das mit den Katalogen gibt’s hier auch. Wegen Infos zu einer Krankheit meines Pfirsichbaums bin ich wohl auf die falsche Website gekommen. Seitdem erhalte ich zweimal jährlich imponierend bis einschüchternd dicke Gartenkataloge. Aber ich geb’s zu, es wirkt. Ich schaue jedesmal kürzer oder länger in diese Kataloge. Gekauft habe ich dadurch allerdings noch nichts bei dieser Firma.
      Ich habe mich gewundert, durch deinen Blog erfuhr ich, dass es bei euch viel kälter war als bei uns. Ich hatte von solchem Frost bei euch bereits in Micheners hervorragenden Texas-Buch gelesen. Dennoch wundere ich mich immer wieder, dass es in Texas kälten sein als bei uns.

    • Hallo Klausbernd,
      Michener hat dabei hat dabei wohl mehr das südliche Texas im Auge, denn wenn ich mich richtig erinnere, berichtet er vom “Blue Northerner” ja im Zusammenhang mit Cabeza de Vaca, und der war ja mehr im Süden unterwegs. Noch mehr und häufiger Kälte, und das sogar manchmal verbunden mit Blizzards, gibt’s im Panhandle im nördlichen Texas um Amarillo und Lubbock. Da kann es lausig kalt werden. All das war mir, obwohl ich Michener ja schon in den 80er Jahren in Deutschland gelesen hatte, dennoch gar nicht richtig klar, bevor ich hierher kam.
      Jetzt gerade [11:30] haben wir noch 0 Grad. Aber das Thermometer soll langsam steigen, morgen auf 17 und Montag auf 23, bevor es dann am Mittwoch, Donnerstag und Freitag zumindest wieder Nachtfrost geben wird.

    • Hallo Pia,
      das finde ich bedauerlich. Amazon ist doch sonst schnell. Ist “Hawaii” vielleicht vergriffen? Dass ich “Hawaii” gelesen habe, ist lange her. Damals konnte ich mich nicht unbedingt damit anfreunden. Warum genau, das weis ich nicht mehr. Ich müsste es einfach noch einmal lesen. “Texas” gefällt mir als “Neutexaner” natürlich ganz besonders. Klar, wenn man so Vieles da wiedererkennt. “Chesapeake” finde ich auch sehr gut, ebenso wie “Alaska”. “Centennial” ist ebenfalls, wie auch “Hawaii”, zu lange her, um Genaues sagen zu können. Müsste ich ebenfalls mal wieder lesen. Mal sehen, ob/wann ich dazu komme. Es liegen nämlich einige andere Bücher gänzlich ungelesen hier. Z. Zt. beschäftigen mich einige über Lyndon B. Johnson, den 36. Präsidenten der USA – auch wieder u.A. aus lokalem Interesse, denn er hatte im Nachbarort Johnson City seine Ranch mit dem “Texas White House”, und da ist heute ein Nationalpark draus geworden.

      Ja, ich lernte es bereits in der Schule, dass durch NS-Richtung der Gebirge in Nordamerika auch extrem kalte Luft aus dem Norden bis weit in den Süden gelangen kann. Aber wenn man es dann so hört, wundert man sich doch.

      ist das nicht eher ein Unentschieden? 😉 Waeren wir naeher zusammen, koennten wir ja darauf einen Trinken gehen. 😉
      Hier ist heute – wie schon gestern und zumindest auch noch morgen – Schmuddelwetter. Zwar ueber null, aber truebe, und gelegentlich nieselt es. Mary ist trotzcdem heute nach San Antonio zum Einkaufen, waehrend ich hier die Stellung halte. Und mich nachher auf dem Heimtrainer koerperlich betaetige.

    • Wir haben Micheners “Hawaii”-Buch in unserer Bibliothek stehen, haben es auch gelesen, und auch wir fanden es Micheners schwächstes Werk. Vielleicht liegt dies das u.a. daran, dass wir zu Hawaii als die maritime Kloake der Welt (hängt mit Meeresströmungen zusammen) ein gespaltenes Verhältnis haben.

      danke fuer den Hinweis auf “Kloake Hawaii”. Dabei sieht es dort doch immer so paradiesisch aus. Wie schon gesagt: Mary und ich wollen unbedingt mal hin. Mal sehen, wann das wird. Unsere Freunde aus Karnes City haben dort ein Ferienapartment und haben uns schon des Oefteren eingeladen, aber bisher ist immer etwas dazwischen gekommen.

      große Teile der Meeresoberfläche vor Hawaii sind von Plastik bedeckt. deswegen gab’s auch schon einige Aktionen (die berühmteste war die von Rothschild – ein Nachfahre des Bankers – in seinem Boot mit Schwimmkörpern aus Plastikflaschen). Der Wirbel vor Hawai sammelt allen Müll – und das Plastikzeugs ist nur das, was man sieht.

      Mein Bruder hat 2mal den Iron-Man in Kona gefinished, wir haben ihn begleitet und beim nächsten mal möchte ich sehr gerne “meine ” Hawaii-Reise machen, ohne Iron-Man mit mehr Hula….
      Aber das dauert noch….

    As for your topic, now I’ll confess what I once did: I went away for a short trip, only a few days and was absolutely livid to se the front of my entrance being covered with unwanted advertisements. I do have a sign saying “No, advertisements, PLEASE!” but I live in big house with many flats in London so the postman dumps it outside my letterbox. I scooped it up and went to the next the red letterbox and dumped it. Only it didn’t really help. But it made me feel better for a few minutes. 🙂 Loved this funnyclever post!

  34. I’m all for the simple life and am a huge advocate for preserving the environment, but I have to admit that I have no idea what the word ‘sustainability’ means although I hear it all the time. I know it’s meaning is vague enough for some people to simply use it to attack positions they don’t like. After all, who wants to be against ‘sustainability’? It’s like the word ‘health’ nobody wants to be accused of being against it, as it’s obviously something good that we should all be in favor of, right…or maybe wrong?

    • Malcolm, I find your point very interesting, thank you so much for bringing this up! When I first was introduced to sustainability ist was in the German edition of National Geographic. In German it’s Nachhaltigkeit, a word just as vague as the English, it doesn’t give itself away at first glance. Today it’s politic, in the news every day an it’s a label amongst many on the daily goods we purchase.

      Right, Sustainability could be defined as an ability or capacity of something to be maintained or to sustain itself. But isn’t it mainly about taking what we need to live now, without jeopardising the potential for people in the future to meet their needs? In Norway and anywhere else it’s absolutely vital to think and act like this, far too long did the fishermen return with more fish than the sea could bare to give away and now certain species are seriously threatened and several villages on the coast have to define themselves according to the new situation.
      If an activity is said to be sustainable, it should be able to continue forever. Like our post about the local “Reed Harvest in Norfolk” last week. It gets funding from outside, without the EU-support for the machinery, I’m not sure if they all could survive. But they are maintaining their skills and pass it on to the next generation and they cultivate local, traditional rural craftmanship. For me, living sustainably is about living within the means of our natural systems, you may call it environmental and ensuring that my lifestyle doesn’t harm other people. It makes me think about where my food, clothes, energy and other products come from and deciding whether I should buy and consume these things. So, I agree, it’s like healthy living and it gives you a good cushion to sleep on. 🙂
      In our little village in North Norfolk next the sea it’s part of life: no light pollution, no sound pollution, you buy local otherwise it will soon be bye-bye local. 🙂

      on one hand you are right, no doubt about it.
      In my personal understanding of sustainable I see a system that can keep up itself or I see it the other way round: you don’t take from the system without giving. That means indirectly you recycle as much as you can or even better you cut down taking from the system. I would say sustainability means a use of natural systems which keeps up its diversity. At least in the discussions about managing the nature reserves here sustainability understood like this. If sustainability is understood like this there is close connection to ecology. In industry sustainability is understood as recycling. The theory of sustainability is based on 3 pillars: social, ecology and economy. 1987 defined the UN in the „Brundtland-Kommission“ sustainability. Under the former Norwegian cancler Gro Harlem Brundtland the commission not only defined sustainability but also presented a kind of general theory of sustainability.
      But nevertheless it seems to me that sustainability is still not really understood by people outside the field of ecology.

      two comments above I answered Malcom’s comment concerning this question.
      In 1987 the Brundtland-commission of the UN made clear that sustainability is a dynamic concept. It describes a certain kind of interaction of social, natural and economical forces. Sorry, but what you describe can only be seen as a populistic interpretation of sustainability in economic systems. The UN definition makes that quite clear that sustainibility is a modell of the interaction of the so called “three pillars of sustainability” and this business definition you had to learn covers only a tiny part of a greater dynamic system.
      At least this is my understanding of sustainability.

    • Thank you, Klausbernd. Good that the UN has been clear about definitions. What concerns me is that businesses may claim to be sustainable (by their narrow defintion) and we might assume they are using a more general definition that includes the three pillars you mention. Having spent thirty years working for various businesses I have come to believe that they parse their words very carefully. I occasionally wrote and edited published corporate statements and have come to doubt that corporate values might ever be equal to ours, no matter their individually help opinions. Profit is still the great motivator. I hope I am not too pessimistic but I believe corporate interests and ours will never align, unless there is money to be made.       I already wrote here and to Malcolm how I understand “sustainability”. By the way a notion being defined under the direction of a Norwegian! I know you love it 🙂
      The problem with sustainability is where to draw the lines of your system. You can see reed cutting as a local craft and see it just on this scale but you can as well see it as having an influence as far as Germany, The Netherlands and of course the whole of England. Sustainability means seeing the social influences (work for fishermen), the influences of the landscape (it has be cut) and economy (especially thatching) and the interaction of those factors. That this rural craft is funded by the EU is not at all against the concept of sustainability. So you are right: reed cutting and thatching is a sustainable rural craft, well, an art …

      I agree, as long as the profit is the ‘summum bonnum’, the highest aim, there will be alienation which is opposite to sustainability. Sustainability is a holistic notion, whereas Marx made it clear that alienation is based on division (of labour). And it’s interesting that in your and Malcolms school sustainability was seen one-dimensional which reminds me on Marcuse whose idea of the “One-Dimensional Man” is based on Marx’s alienation. To cut it short: Seeing it from this angle there can never bee a real sustainability as long as there is alienation which is produced by the profit as the highest aim.

  39. Meine Schülerin Sarah ist von der Palucca-Schule eingeladen sportwissenschaftlich zu forschen, an der Frauenkirche war gerade ein Pianist und spielte den Earth Song….und wenn doch alles gut wird?!
    Dieser Baum ist wirklich beeindruckend!
    Heute habe ich dem Werbefritzen jedenfalls nicht die Tür aufgemacht, so! (Jetzt liegen die Prospekte auf dem Platz und der Wind…)
    Das Prospekteverteilen diente früher oft zur Taschengeldaufbesserung für Schüler, die hatten ihre Schummel-Methoden …..
    Ist das schwierig – so viele Baustellen ein bewussteres Leben zu führen. Müsste man mal die ToDo-Liste umschreiben:
    Da gibt es sicher eine Menge kleiner Dinge, die “Mother Earth” ein wenig entlasten könnten, oder nur das eigene Gewissen?

    Dieses Thema zermartert mir das Hirn, Putzmittel, Abfälle, Plastikflaschen, Waschmittel, Elektrosmog…..
    Große und kleine Umweltsünden, Fukushima mal ganz außer Acht gelassen…..

    • Liebe Pia,
      daran kann ich mich auch noch erinnern, dass wir als Schüler Prospekte austrugen zur Verbesserung unseres Taschengeldes. Die Kühnsten unter uns warfen die Prospekte gleich in die Mülltonne und wussten gar nicht, dass dies eine gute Tat war, die die Bewohner vor Junkmail verschonte. Übrigens es kam immer heraus, wenn einer von uns die Prospekte gleich müllte.
      Wie man mit diesem Thema Umweltschutz und Nachhaltigkeit umgehen soll, fragst du. Ich baue z.B. das aus, was mir leicht fällt, das ist die Reduktion meines Konsums an Energie und Waren. Da fällt es mir nicht schwer, mein Bewusstsein zu stärken und entsprechend zu handeln. Auf der anderen Seite reinige ich z.B. meinen Backofen, in dem ich regelmäßig mein Brot backe, mit einem höchst umweltfreundlichen Spray, da ich ihn anders nicht hinreichend sauber bekomme. Auch das Holz an meinen Gartenhäuschen und an der Sauna präpariere ich mit einem Mittel, bei dem man fast schon Ausschlag bekommt, wenn es nur anschaut. Ich geb’s zu, bei solchen Sachen ist es mir einfach zu aufwändig ökologischer zu handeln. Ich weiß, dass es schlecht ist und beschränke das eben auf ein Minimum. Jetzt kommt sicher etwas völlig Lästerliches, aber ich mein Bedürfnis und das meiner natürlichen Umwelt müssen gegeneinander abgewogen werden. Eine Diktatur meiner natürlichen Umwelt lehne ich ab! Auch ich habe berechtigte Bedürfnisse, die allerdings reflektiert befriedigt werden sollten.

    • Es gab mal eine Reportage über einen Tango tanzenden Mann, der völlig autonom lebt, alles selbst anbaut, kein Abwasser produziert, seine Bekleidung selbst herstellt…..er wirkte sehr zufrieden, seine Söhne leben nicht bei ihm, sie können nicht auf alles verzichten und ihre Teller vor dem kurzen Abwasch ohne Seife abschlecken, kein Handy benutzen, überall nur mit dem Fahrrad hinfahren…
      Das war beeindruckend für mich zu sehen und zugleich wurde mir klar, dass ich so konsequent umweltfreundlich niemals leben könnte.
      Wir werden wohl Kompromisse machen müssen…..
      Im indischen Ozean binden sie Plastikflaschen unter die Badestege, beim Schnorcheln entdeckt….
      Alles nicht gut!

      Wir Menschen leben eher mit und von den Bäumen…
      Die Schule war einmal in der St.Ingberter Straße 9, gegenüber eine Prospektverteilerfirma, erst hatten sie 2 Lieferwagen, nach einer kurzen Zeit mind. 20….das hat mich schon gewundert, dass man offensichtlich richtig Geld verdienen kann mit Prospektwerbung.
      Eine Reportage über den Regenwald fand ich auch sehr spannend und wie sich dann der Nebel von dort aus bewegt…..
      Einzelne müssen sich entscheiden bei was sie noch mitmachen wollen und was sie, oft völlig unbewusst, mittragen, oder?
      Marx werde ich dann eben auch einmal lesen, seit dem Museumsbesuch in Berlin, Ausstellung Russland-Deutschland-Geschichte, ich war dort mit Anastasia, ein einziges Geklüngel…..
      Das sagte ich schon: Einmal vom Baum der Erkenntnis gefressen!…Mist!

      By the way we live in an area with very few trees. First the Romans cut down the trees for their forts, many trees were cut in the time of Henry VIII for the fleet and with the beginning of the industrialisation trees were cut as support for the mine shafts.

  42. So true, 95% of my mail goes directly from my mailbox into a recycle bin right next to my mailbox…and I wonder just how & why this still continues. I know the answer is that companies who print, mail and send out this material say that these mailings are economically feasible, but not sure they care much about whether or not it is environmentally feasible. At least the mailmen are getting a good workout ~ Cheers!

    kann ich mir vorstellen, dass solche Bilder erschreckend sind. Ich kenne nur “Tora! Tora! Tora!” und “Pearl Harbour”, und die sind in manchen Sequenzen schon grausam genug. Und wenn ich mir die Seeleute vorstelle, die mit ihren Schiffen da untergegangen sind, dann wird mir schlecht.
    Also lieber zu den angenehmeren Seiten von Hawaii: Leute, die den Ironman ueberhaupt nur andenken, bewundere ich schon. Ist fuer mich unvorstellbar, wie man so etwas kann. Aber andererseits haben wir im Bekanntenkreis einen jungen Mann [Langstreckenlaeufer], der bis zu 100 Meilen am Stueck laeuft.
    Danke fuer den Tipp mit Mark Twain. Das Buch kannte ich noch nicht. Muss ich mir mal besorgen.
    Und dann: wie ich schon Klausbernd geschrieben habe, wir habe gute Freunde, die in Hawaii eine Ferienwohnung haben und uns schoen des Oefteren eingeladen haben. Wird Zeit, dass wir die Einladung einmal annehmen – nicht nur des Hula Hula wegen. 😉

  45. I kept thinking, but at least it’s recycled! Then I saw the very clever green sign about we humans cutting trees to make paper to write don’t cut trees on. Hmm. Oh well. Logging is still big business in this part of the world, where trees grow very fast and it’s easy to think they are an inexhaustible resource. True, the forests are replanted, but it pains me to see the logging trucks with their giant logs. And then I use paper in so many ways. I would hate to see it go but I am absolutely in favor of using it more carefully, and consciously. Thanks for a good post – you’re adept at approaching a serious subject with enough humor that it does not get tedious.

      We live in area quite the opposite to yours. There are very few trees here, well, we have some great single trees but not big forests. English culture romantisised the single tree (whereas the Germans romantisised the forests).
      But may we ask you where do you live? In the woods …?

    • Interesting point about the English romanticizing the single tree – I would add spreading, deciduous, right? – and the Germans romanticized the forest. I have blood from both in my veins! I’m outside Seattle, just in an apartment right now, but it’s at the corner of the building, 3 stories up (top floor) and has many trees on those two sides. Big trees. We have our little piece of forest here because it’s a steep slope – not good for building – so it was saved, and we enjoy it. Lots of birds come to the feeders on the deck, too. But there is traffic noise from a nearby highway. Always compromises!

    • You are right with spreading.
      We have lots of hedges here. They are very much liked by the birds and by little mamals. Right now we are struggeling with a squirrel which empties our bird feeders regularly.
      To live near big trees adds very much to the quality of living. Our neighbour has garden with big old chestnut trees and we have quite a high eucalyptus tree in our garden and some old apple, plum and paer trees.

  47. tata…heute habe ich einen neuen Ohrwurm: Bibi und Tina….hex,hex
    Einmal mussten die Kleinen ein Tanzstück improvisieren, ein Mädchen meldete sich freiwillig den Baum zu tanzen. Sie war voreilig. Und ich durchtrieben. Es gab noch Engel, Kinder, Schneeflocken, Rehe, die Sonne.
    Sie war stinksauer und in diesem Durchgang hatten wir einen trotzigen, weinenden Baum der in der Ecke saß….
    dann folgte die Abmeldung, ihr Vater fand auch, dass seine Prinzessin ungerecht behandelt wurde.
    Ich schrieb dann noch eine Mail, er solle doch mal mit seinem Kind in den Wald gehen….es nutzte nichts.
    Bin gespannt, ob die Familie schon bemerkt hat, wie wichtig die Bäume sind!

      oh dear, da hat der Baum solch schlechtes Image, dass die kleinen Tanzmäuschen ihn nicht spielen wollen. Schlechte PR, wir benötigen eine Imageaufbesserungskampagne (toll langes Wort!) für Vater Baum.
      Nicht weit von uns in Bale starb eine tausendjährige Eiche vor einiger Zeit. Sie wurde mit einem Trauerzug, dem das ganze Dorf folgte und viele mehr (auch Siri und Selma), quasi beerdigt. Schon bei den Germanen gab es einen Baumkult, die Weltenesche Yggdrasil bildete den Kosmos den Germanen ab. Die Christen waren die Baumverächter und ideologisch motivierte Baumfäller. Keine Donar-Eiche war vor ihnen sicher. Damit brachen sie auch mit der Tradition der griechischen Klassik (wahrscheinlich aus Persien übernommen), nach der man in (heiligen) Hain zu philosophieren pflegte.
      Anyway, mach’s mal gut.

      Da fällt mir gerade noch ein, die größte Ehrung erfuhr der Baum in China. In ihrer 5-Elementen-Lehre wird Holz als ein ein Element angenommen (siehe im I Ging). Wie bei den Germanen spielt auch in der chinesischen Symbolik der Baum als „axis mundi“ eine wesentliche Rolle. In chinesischen Mythen wird die Weltenachse vom Pfirsichbaum dargestellt. Der bedeutendste Baum ist jedoch in diesem Kulturbereich der Geneigte Maulbeerbaum (Fu Sang), der im Osten des chinesischen Reichs einhundert Meilen hoch wächst. Von ihm beginnt täglich die Sonne ihre Reise um die Welt.
      Und noch ‘nen berühmter Baum: der auf dem Kopf stehende Baum der Kabbala, der exzentrischte aller Bäume.

    • Dankeschön! Die Bäume sind echte Freunde! Jetzt atme ich für 10 Minuten durch und dann unterrichte ich die Frauengruppe, würde ich sehr gerne alle mal 3 Tage an den Baum binden und beobachten…..
      Nein, ich spaße, sie sind ja gar nicht so schlimm…manche wurden noch in der Schule mit dem Stock geschlagen, so etwas Dummes aus Holz zu basteln!!!!!!
      Wir werden es am Ende mit dem umgekehrten Baum versuchen und einen Kopfstand machen…..das hält fit.
      Heute habe ich beim Essen, völlig gegen die buddhistische Achtsamkeit, im Wochenblatt gelesen, unsere Werbezeitung….Supertramps Sänger kommt im Juni nach Weinheim, hätte ich nicht mitbekommen….

    • Die Frauen waren mustergültig, brav, fleißig, gelehrig, ruhig, aufmerksam…wir haben einen neuen Tanz angefangen auf: Dream a little dream of me…..gesungen von LeeAnn Rimes…..ach, das Lied liebe ich, meinte eine Frau….sie weiß noch nicht, dass sie darauf in einem Zwergenkostüm tanzen wird.

      Wenn ich den “Baumtanz” erfolgreich werden lassen will, muss ich immer erst völlig ausgeflippt mit allen mittanzen…Rütteln, Verbiegen, alle möglichen Verdrehungen, Äste aufspannen, alles Mögliche wachsen lassen, Stürme aushalten….ihr ahnt ja nicht, was im Leben eines Baumes “Verrücktes” passieren kann und tänzerisch umgesetzt wird…dann reißen sich alle förmlich um die Baumrolle….tja, so lerne ich….
      Also Siri und Selma, ich bin ganz bei euch beim Baum-Bloggen……

  51. Ihr Lieben! Ihr habt Recht mit dem vielen Papiermuell. Ich habe eine P.O. Box und sortiere es aus auf dem Postamt und lasse meinen Muell dort. Glaube, dass es bald keine Baeume mehr geben wird mit diesem so vielen Papiermuell, Dazu kommt noch die viele Gelddruckerei, was auch sehr viel Papier und Baeume benoetigt.

  52. I’ve never seen a definition of sustainability that I can understand. Most often they do not include any understanding of time or eternity. It’s just a nice piece of wobbly jargon to say we like nature.

    But…it gets dark when massive government agencies, funded with our tax money, create massive government regulations, taking more of our hard earned money, and tie us up in little tightly bound balls. Horrible.

    • Well, sustainability was clearly defined by the UN (a UN commission working under the former Norwegian prime minister in the eighties). Well, it has a lot to do with time, of course – but eternity …?
      We discussed the difinition of sustainability in the comments above. If you are interested, please, have a look.
      Well, the tax money … I know much better the financial situation of Germany, Finland, Norway and Benelux. We had such an enourmous surplus on taxes f.e. in Germany in the last years (because of the producing industry) that – besides lowering taxes – a lot of this surplus is invested in sustainable ecolocigal projects (because the Green Party is quite strong). I don’t know how the taxpayer feels in the poorer countries like the US and UK. At least I don’t hear any complains by my English neighbours. That the enourmous surplus of tax moneys is invested in ecology and education is in my interest.

  53. I certainly relate…. I have two mail boxes…. one at home and one at the post office… at the post office I have to stand in line in order to pick up my junk mail which I carry home and deposit directly in the recycling bin!

  57. A very relevant topic been presented beautifully and so nice to see that, it has initiated a lively discussion.

    Sustainability is still a hot topic in academic circles but not been part of our culture yet.

    At least in the developing countries…

    I think we have reached a tipping point with respect to green house impact and we could no longer wait for some one to show the way and then follow it.

    We all have to take this march together and save our beautiful planet 🙂

      We fully agree with you we all have to work together to save our planet. But every country has its own way, even within Europe. Segregation of waste was not heard of in England whereas in countries like Germany you had up to 5 different bins, even on railway stations and airports. Here where we live light pollution was such a topic that our village decided against street lights in a time when in Germany f.e. nobody has heard of light pollution.

    • Liebe Pia,
      wir schauen ja auch manchmal durch Masterchens Teleskop, und da sind wir immer richtig sauer, wenn Streulicht, eben diese Light Pollution, die Sicht auf den Himmel stark trübt. Aber Siri meinte kürzlich, dies habe auch einen Vorteil, denn man sieht nur die leuchtstarken Sterne und kann sich so leichter am Himmel olrientieren.
      Wir haben einen Himmelsglobus von der lieben Dina und Masterchen zu unserem Geburtstag geschenkt bekommen. Wenn wir den anschalten, dann werden die Sterne auf die Zimmerdecke projiziert. Das beschauen wir uns gaaaaanz genau, bevor wir in Garten sternegucken gehen.
      Habe eine feine Woche.
