Rye

We decided to go to Rye in the autumn. Siri 🙂 and 🙂 Selma immediately liked it when they found out that this little market town was a hotpoint for smuggling and beach robbery during the middle ages. Here the notorious Hawkhurst Gang was up to mischief later in the 18th c. until its members need up on the gallows. It wasn’t hard to convince our dear Dina to visit Rye too as it is seen as one of the most romantic towns in England with cobbled streets and rows of old houses. Our dear Master immediately agreed because in the old part of Rye Lamb House, the last home of Henry James, is situated. So everyone was happy and off we went.

Wir beschlossen im SpĂ€therbst nach Rye zu fahren. Siri 🙂 und Selma 🙂 waren sofort dafĂŒr, als sie hörten, dass diese Kleinstadt in East Sussex seit dem Mitttelalter ein Zentrum der Schmuggler und StrandrĂ€uber war. Es war hier, wo spĂ€ter die berĂŒchtigte Hawkhurst Gang ihr Unwesen trieb, bis deren Mitglieder am Galgen endeten. Unsere liebe Dina war auch nicht schwer von Rye zu ĂŒberzeugen, da es als eines der romantischsten StĂ€dtchen in England mit Kopfsteinpflaster und Reihen uralter HĂ€user gilt und Masterchen war sogleich dafĂŒr, da in der Altstadt Lamb House, der Alterssitz von Henry James, steht. So waren wir alle zufrieden und los ging es.

Siri told us during the drive: Rye was a member of the Cinque Ports during the middle ages, an alliance not of five but of 14 channel ports. Well, one was counting differently then 😉 These ports and especially Rye became wealthy with trading, although trading is a euphemism for smuggling. We were wondering what the contraband has been. We were astonished reading that is has been mostly wool as it was highly taxed. Since the 17th c. the smugglers expanded their business activities and dealt with luxury goods as well. The Hawkhurst Gang expanded their activities to Kent and all of Sussex. This gang used to meet in the romantic Mermaid Inn where Shakespeare once has stayed. Siri told us that this hotel is haunted. So we decided to stay there but unfortunately we did not meet any ghosts although our brave Selma sneaked through the old creaking hotel corridors at the witching hour.

Siri las uns wĂ€hrend der Fahrt vor: Rye gehörte im Mittelalter zu den Cinque Ports, ein BĂŒndnis, zu dem erstaunlicher Weise nicht 5 sondern 14 KanalhĂ€fen gehörten. Naja, man zĂ€hlte halt damals anders 😉 . Diese HĂ€fen und speziell Rye wurden durch den Handel reich, wobei Handel ein Euphemismus fĂŒr Schmuggel war. Aber wir wunderten uns, was geschmuggelt wurde, nĂ€mlich zuerst einmal Wolle, deren Ein- und Ausfuhr nĂ€mlich saftig besteuert wurde. Ab dem 17 Jh. erweiterten die Schmuggler ihren GeschĂ€ftsbereich auf LuxusgĂŒter. Unter der berĂŒchtigten Hawkhurst Gang expandierten die GeschĂ€fte dann nach Kent und ganz Sussex. Diese Gang traf sich im romantischen Mermaid Inn, wo auch Shakespeare ĂŒbernachtet haben soll. Hier soll’s spuken, las Siri ganz aufgeregt vor. So beschlossen wir dort zu ĂŒbernachten, wobei wir allerdings leider keine Geister trafen, obwohl Selma mutig stets zur Geisterstunde ĂŒber die alten labyrinthischen HotelgĂ€nge aus dem 15. Jh. schlich.

Our Master found Lamb House not far from the Mermaid Inn on his first exploratory walk. That was the home of the American author Henry James and after him E.F. Benson lived here. Benson is this English author who is known for his ironic and funny ghost stories, a natural topic in Rye. Because not only the Mermaid Inn is seen as haunted but the church yard as well as many other places in Rye.
Unfortunately, Lamb House is closed off season. We couldn’t visit this place where James wrote some of his psychologically clever plotted novels. In his novel “The Awkward Age“, James perpetuated Lamb House as `Mr Longdon’s HouseÂŽ. James was called `The MasterÂŽ- not to confuse with our Master – because he wrote his masterpieces like “The Ambassador” and “Golden Bowl” here.

Unweit vom Mermaid Inn fand Masterchen gleich bei seinem ersten Erkundungsgang Lamb Haus. Hier hatte der amerikanische Autor Henry James gewohnt und nach ihm E.F. Benson, also dieser englische Schriftsteller, der u.a. witzig ironische Geistergeschichten schrieb, was ja in Rye nahe liegt. Dort soll es nÀmlich auch auf dem nahen Friedhof geistern und wo nicht alles noch.
Lamb House ist leider außerhalb der Saison geschlossen, so konnten wir dieses Haus, in dem James einige seiner psychologisch klugen Romane schrieb, nicht besuchen. In seinem Roman “The Awkward Age” hat der Autor Lamb House als Mr. Longdons Haus verewigt. Da er hier seine Masterpieces wie “The Ambassador” und “The Golden Bowl” schrieb, nannte man ihn in Rye hochachtungsvoll “The Master” (nicht mit unserem Masterchen zu verwechseln!).

Daniel Defoe visited Rye and mentioned that the harbour needs attention because it started silting up. More recently Rye inspired Enid Blyton to write “Five go to Smuggler’s Top” and Malcolm Saville, another children’s books author, places his story “Royal Rye” of course in Rye. Besides our dear Master, a lot of authors visited Rye just to name a few like Joseph Conrad, Ford Maddox Ford and H.G. Wells. And Spike Mulligan was the Vice President of the Rye Rugby Club. Dina discovered the house of the author and photographer Paul Nash not far from Lamb House.

Rye hat außer Masterchen erstaunlich viele Autoren als Besucher angezogen, wir nennen nur einige der berĂŒhmtesten: Joseph Conrad, Ford Maddox Ford und H.G. Wells. Spike Mulligan war ĂŒbrigens der Vize-PrĂ€sident von Ryes Rugby-Club. Dina fand hier unweit von Lamb House das Haus des Autors und Photographen Paul Nash, von dem sie gerade ein Buch geschenkt bekommen hatte.

You wouldn’t believe it, even our dear Master enjoyed shopping in Rye’s beautiful little shops. “Finally a town with a main street that is not distorted with charity shops” Selma noticed happily and disappeared with lightning speed to invest her saved pocket money in special Christmas gifts. We all found tasteful gifts there. Our Master found rare books and bought with his gift vouchers glamorous perfumes.

Selbst Masterchen ist in den schönen kleinen GeschĂ€ften Ryes gerne shopping gegangen. “Endlich ‘mal ein Ort, dessen Hauptstraße nicht von Charity Shops entstellt wird!” rief gleich Selma am ersten Tag aus und verschwand blitzesschnell, um mit ihren gesparten Fayrie-Talern spezielle Weihnachtsgeschenke einzukaufen. Wir alle fanden erstaunlich geschmackvolle Geschenke dort und Masterchen spĂŒrte sogleich mit Siri seltene BĂŒcher auf und löste freudig Geschenkgutscheine fĂŒr außergewöhnliche DĂŒfte ein, die er zum Geburtstag bekommen hatte.

  2. My favorite children’s author set books here and I have always wanted to visit it. Thank you for the wonderful virtual trip. That last picture is exact;ly how I have always imagined it from these books, right down to the old inn.

      das ist wirklich ein Ort, um sich wohl zu fĂŒhlen. Allerdings, wie wir im Pub hörten, nur im spĂ€teren Herbst und Winter. In der Saison strömen Massen durch Mermaid Street und die anderen alten Straßen. Wir hĂ€tten es gerne mit Schnee gehabt. Aber man kann eben nicht alles haben.

  10. Fond memories for me. I have stayed at The Mermaid, as well as other hotels in the town. I must have been there more than 30 times. It was such an easy drive from London, we even used to go down just to have Cream Tea in Simon The Pieman. Many happy hours spent looking at the antique shops on the quayside too. One of my favourite places in England.
    You did well to get your photos without people in them, Dina. Skill+dedication! 🙂

    • Dear Pete,
      we suppose we have been there at the right time at the end of November. There were not so many people around but nevertheless to photograph Mermaid Street without people and cars needs some patience. At some other places we had to look quite hard for the right standpoint to get cars not seen in the picture.
      Next time we’ll go there we’ll have Cream Tea in Simon The Pieman. And we are sure that this wasn’t the last time we have been there. The next time we would love to see Rye with some snow.

      wow, such great wishes! And we’ll try our best that they all come true.
      We have been in Rye for a week. Well, in week you are able to see everything in Rye – more or less, at least everything that’s interesting for tourists like us. We loved being there. It was the right place to celebrate our dear Master’s birthday. Besides old houses and interesting shops there are nice restaurants and pubs as well. All what you need 🙂 🙂

      Henry James ist vom Feinsten, finden wir auch, obwohl er leider etwas aus der Mode gekommen ist. Wie sein berĂŒhmter Bruder hatte er ein erstaunliches VerstĂ€ndnis von der menschlichen Psyche.   16. Happy pre-Christmas to all of you as well. I’ve not been to Rye but because of lots of reading of historical novels, I knew about the smuggling. What a delicious town! Your photos made me want to visit immediately, but alas, it cannot be. 😱. However, I’ve been enjoying decorating for Christmas and am hoping and praying for a white one.

      we are very much hoping for a white Christmas as well, but unfortunately we will not have it here. Actually, we would love going to Rye when there is lots of snow. But in times of global warming we will not have any snow around Christmas neither in Cley nor in Rye. We hope for February otherwise we have to go to Norway again.
      Rye is great, especially in the Mermaid Inn Hotel you can have the feeling that the smugglers just come to bar having their rum.
      We started our Christmas decorations as well. We got the big Christmas box from our shed and this time we decided to have it very Scandinavian, natural products only and everything in red and white. When our dear Master was young he knew this from the anthroposophical tradition too.

    • I decorate in a number of different areas in the house, each with their own decorations. One area has needlepoint houses and a church, made by my mom some years ago. The sideboard holds a creche (made in East Germany when there still was one and given to us by my s-i-l who lives in Europe) and a small artificial tree that is decorated with birds and other nature ornaments. Underneath it are animals of various kinds. Lots of other areas as well. The tree will be decorated soon with ornaments of all sorts, including some made when our girls were small.

      It was and still is a tradition in East Germany to produce wooden Christmas decorations. Especially famous are the smokers (RĂ€uchermĂ€nnchen) that are hollow wooden figures and you burn incense inside. Siri 🙂 and 🙂 Selma made some decorations too – but we are not allowed to see them yet.
      We are discussing if we will have a Christmas tree or holly, ivy and green branches.

      We love to burn incense. We like exotic scents in our house as well as in our sauna. Around Christmas we burn different woods like stone pine and different firs but cinnamon oil as well.

    this is a part of England I’m not familiar with, but you make it look it very inviting. Absolutely gorgeous photos. Rye is on my list now! 🙂 I suppose it must be very crowded in the summer, it’s obviously a favourite for many tourists.
    I’m in Longyearbyen right now and we are all very eagerly awaiting the polar explorers BĂžrge Ousland and Mike Horn, currently on “Lance”, stuck in the ice. Are you familiar with the epic adventure they have done – crossing the polar ocean from Nome in Alaska to Spitsbergen for the last three months in total darkness?

    • Our dear friend Per Magnus,
      we followed every day the blog and news from BĂžrge Ousland and Mike Horn. What an expedition! Now they are on the “Lance” and, as they said, it was the hardest expedition they ever suffered. It made clear again how much ice has gone and that now the open water is the problem for Arctic explorers. To move 3 months in absolute darkness and in temperatures quite often down to minus 40 that’s an enormous psychological and physical achievement. Now they are stuck on their ship NE of your island. We keep our fingers crossed that they will soon come free. For us Ousland and Horn are they greatest contemporary explorers followed by Kagge. But such a suffering …
      Thanks a lot for liking Dina’s photography 🙂 🙂 We weren’t familiar with this part of England, well, not quite true, we have been to Sissinghurst a couple of years ago. Rye is great, but we went fro Rye to the Seven Sister, we will blog about next time, and the towns we passed by were very much run down. We became aware again in what a privileged area we are living.
      We’ll talk before Christmas. Actually, we wouldn’t mind being on Spitzbergen right now. It’s much too warm here and we’ll have no snow for Christmas

      indeed, walking around the old part of Rye is like being catapulted into times long gone. You are right, one has the feeling that Henry James or Benson are coming around the corner. And in the Mermaid Inn you expect the smugglers having a bottle of rum there.

    • I love a fresh beautiful tree, but for ecology’s sake, I have a 4′ artificial tree up on my “reading corner end table”. When lit at night it can be seen from the road and looks like a six-footer.

      your Christmas tree is great! What a clever ida to make it look like a 6′. We like it that it’s seen from the street. In Scandinavian countries nearly everybody has put up some decoration with lights you can see from the street around Christmas.
      We haven’t decided yet if we will have a Christmas tree or not. There will be great Fab Four council next week.

  21. I have been absent from the blogging scene for quite a while, sorry for having neglected you, Fab Four.
    Aaaah, your article brings back very fond memories. Stunning photos, Dina! I have deeply etched childhood memories of Rye. We came here often, Mum and Dad perhaps harbouring fantasies of moving to its medieval streets when we won the pools. Now I still come here often, accompanied by much the same vain hopes. In the intervening four decades, little has altered, bar the arrival of boutique hotels, boutique cinemas and better coffee. Rye, after all, has been around the block and seen it all before, even unruly, egocentric demagogues striding across the globe. (This was once a command centre against Napoleon’s potential invasion.) You’d think Rye’s prettiness would be its undoing. But no. Even the annual deluge of summer tourists fails to dent its astonishing character. This is a town, though, best approached in winter, hunkered down, hatches battened against the maritime gusts, with the sun low over Camber Sands and a flaming log or two in the fireplace of the The Mermaid Inn.
    🙂 Aaaah, I’m all set and ready to go down to Rye. Just once more.

      Rye seems to stay Rye whatever happens. It has quite an identity. Of course, the shops are posh now and some of the restaurants as well. But on the surface it seems that not much has changed. For unknown reason to us Rye seems to be unchangeable. Nevertheless we wouldn’t like to live in Rye because of all the tourists – like us – during the summer time.
      By the way, do know that this fireplace at the Mermaid Inn is the second biggest in the UK.

  25. Locations, especially those by the ocean, sea, rivers, have always been a huge influence on literature, as you have so wonderfully demonstrated. I understand that the ancient inns – The Mermaid Inn and The Olde Bell Inn – were connected by a secret passageway, used by the Hawkhurst Gang. So many many stories held safe within the walls of buildings. Your posts are always a wonderful way to begin my week.   30. Loving this post with wonderful images. I am actually friends with Henry Jame’s grandchildren , Robert and Henr, they had a hotel in Los Angeles, California where we had such wonderful times together and than I had lived together with them in a house in California for quite a while and they always told us stories about their grandfather and their father.

      we love Henry James’ writing, well, a bit old fashioned but very clever psychologically plotted.
      WOW, and you know his grandchildren. They are living in the US although their grandfather moved to England because he preferred the European culture.
      We have to admit we envy you for being told all these stories about their grandfather. He was quite admired in Rye, a highly respected citizen there. We only know photographs of him and have read some of his novels but have his collected works in our library. During our studies of psychology we heard of his brother William, of course, the founder of American psychology. It’s amazing how this families produced such an interest in and understanding of psychology.
      Did you read James’ ghost story “The Turn of the Screw”? Well, we think that’s a typical Rye-inspired story written around the time he settled down in Lamb House. It’s interesting in another way as well, it’s open for so many different interpretations.

  32. Wie idyllisch und leer, ihr lieben vier.
    Sehr schöne Fotos.
    Ich bin noch fleißig dabei, UnterkĂŒnfte in Schottland zu buchen. Ich bin gespannt, wie es uns gefĂ€llt, wir sind 21 Tag auf der Insel und ich denke, bisher habe ich eine gute Rundfahrt zusammengestellt.
    Ich bin tatsĂ€chlich schon spĂ€t dran. Einiges ist schon ausgebucht. Und das, obwohl ich fĂŒr den frĂŒhen Herbst buche!

      was fĂŒr ein Sturm und das bei Sonnenschein. Da mussten wir die GartentĂŒre verkeilen und hohe Pflanzen festbinden.
      Ja, Rye ist sehr idyllisch, das idealtypisch romantische englische MarkstĂ€dtchen. Und im Mermaid Inn Hotel kann man sich wirklich vorstellen, gleich Shakespeare zu treffen. Selma 🙂 war völlig von dem Feuerplatz dort fasziniert, der der zweitgrĂ¶ĂŸte in UK ist.
      Uns ging das mit den Buchungen in Nord-Schottland ebenso, obwohl wir in dem Jahr gleich nach der Eröffnung der MC500 gefahren sind. Wir halten euch die Daumen, dass ihr feine UnterkĂŒnfte findet. Wir lieben es, auf unseren Reisen speziell zu wohnen. Hanne-Dina ist eine Meisterin darin, zusammen mit Selma 🙂 stets etwas Besonderes zu finden.

    • Guten Morgen, ihr lieben vier,
      mit großer Freude habe ich alle UnterkĂŒnfte fĂŒr unsere Reise gebucht. Unsere Tage auf Skye werden wir in der NĂ€he von Orbost in einem Caravon mit kaltem Wasser direkt am Loch Vatten verbrinden. Wir sind schon sehr gespannt. 5 Tage werden wir dort mit Wanderungen die Insel erkunden und natĂŒrlich beim verlassen der Insel auch zum Eilean Donan Castle besuchen. Am besten ganz frĂŒh, um vor allen anderen dort zu sein. 🙂
      Unsere Route verlĂ€uft von Hamilton bei Glasgow, Lust, Fort Williams, Skye, Inverness, Aberdeen, Pitlochry, Perth, Edinburg und zurĂŒck nach Glasgow. Schade, dass es noch solange dauert, bis es losgeht. Davor verbringen wir noch ein paar Tage auf RĂŒgen im Winter und im FrĂŒhjahr ein paar Tage auf Capri. 🙂
      Es wird ein spannendes Jahr werden.
      Aber nun steht erstmal Weihnachten vor der TĂŒr und das will ich auch geniessen.

      ja, Rye ist umwerfend romantisch. Die Altstadt ist derart gut erhalten, dass man kaum seinen Augen traut. Man denkt, man trÀumt.

      wir glauben, dass wir nur einen dieser Filme, wenn ĂŒberhaupt, gesehen haben. Es ist natĂŒrlich so ideal wie auch kostengĂŒnstig, Rye als Drehort zu wĂ€hlen. Masterchen hat einen Freund in Wuppertal, der ist Location Scout und stĂ€ndig auf der Suche nach solchen Orten. Er kennt natĂŒrlich Rye.

      wir finden, die Briten haben ihren eigenen Untergang gewĂ€hlt. Mit so einem großen Gewinn der Konservativen hatten wir nicht gerechnet. Hier in unserem Wahlkreis haben sie auch gewonnen, unsere Lieblingspartei, die Liberal Democrats, kam immerhin auf etwas ĂŒber 30%, was ihnen aber wegen des Mehrheitswahlrecht nichts nutzt. Bei uns spielt Labour keine Rolle, gerade 7%. Corbin ist sehr unbeliebt. Wir glauben, es war ein Fehler, dass er sich nicht eindeutig positionierte in Bezug auf den Brexit. Auf der anderen Seite ist das ja ein weltweites Problem, dass die Verarmung eines Großteils der Bevölkerung in den alten Industriegebieten einen Rechtsruck erzeugt. Labour verlor, da sie genau in diesen Gebieten massenweise Walkreise nicht verteidigen konnten. Jetzt wird versucht, den Brexit schnellstmöglich ĂŒber die BĂŒhne zu bringen.
      Wir gehen nun zur Weihnachtsfeier des National Trust.

      wir haben gerade eine steife Brise aus östlichen Richtungen. Es sind um die 3 Grad, leicht bedeckt, trocken.
      Die Weihnachtsfeier war angenehm. Die Volunteers des National Trust sind offen und unkompliziert. So gab’s viele GesprĂ€che mit auch zuvor Unbekannten und einen essbaren Lunch.
      Typisch englisch ist der Umgang mit dem Wahlergebnis. Es wird ignoriert, keiner spricht darĂŒber, keine Silbe. Wir nehmen an, dass in unserer klass. Lib Dem Umgebung viele sich ein anderes Wahlergebnis gewĂŒnscht hĂ€tten (jeder Dritte hat bei uns Lib Dem gewĂ€hlt). Wir haben ĂŒberhaupt noch keinen ĂŒber die Wahl sprechen gehört. Die Stimmung hat sich nicht verĂ€ndert. Da wirkt wohl dieses Konservative, dass man ĂŒber Politik und Religion nicht spricht.

      nicht darĂŒber sprechen muss nicht unbedingt das Schlechteste sein, nachdem die Entscheidung nun auf dem Tisch liegt. Nun gilt es, damit zu leben, oder?
      Hier diskutieren sie sich die Köpfe heiß und daraus geschieht auch nur selten etwas Gutes. So viele tun hier ihre/seine Meinung mehr oder weniger offen kund. Und dann?

      wir passen heute auf die Robben auf, die ĂŒber 3000 Junge bekommen haben. Da fahren wir mit Dinas Dienst-GelĂ€ndewagen weit raus auf eine Nehrung, um dann 5 Std. dort draußen herumzugehen. Das ist leicht expeditionsartig bei 2 Grad und stark böigem Ostwind. Naja, wir werden es ĂŒberleben 😉

      The photo was taken on our dear Master’s birthday. Indeed, the Mermaid Inn Hotel was the perfect place for him, actually for all of us. Siri 🙂 and 🙂 Selma went for ghost hunts there at night and we enjoyed the beautiful spacious room from the 15th c. with a big bath tub and the pub with the second biggest fireplace in Britain (or was it in the UK?). We also thoroughly enjoyed walking through Rye and doing all the tourist things.

      here in Europe we have some towns like this, in southern Germany f.e. there is a whole area with towns from the middle ages and the old town of Prague is hundreds of years old and well preserved too as Krakow is. It was this European history and culture that made Henry James (like many other intellectuals) move from the US to Europe. It’s constant topic in his novels this lack of culture and history in the US. Of course, it is inspiring for an author that behind every door and in every street there are stories and there is culture people care for. Well, that’s Good Old Europe we are very quite proud of.

  39. I am so pleased you enjoyed your birthday week in Rye, Klausbernd. Rye is such a pretty town and there is so much to admire. I love the mossy roofs and the cobbled streets though I don’t like walking on the cobbles very much. Dina’s photographs are superb as ever.

  45. What a beautiful and interesting place. I love the moss on the roofs of the houses. From the first photo I thought “Oh! I would love to live there”, but now that I know about the ghosts, I am not sure. I’m not as brave as Siri and Selma 😀 The photos are beautiful. I wish you four a great day.

  47. Heute habe ich mal das Wort “Roggenwampe” gegoogelt, ja, es gibt es scheinbar…
    Roggen – http://www.lestat.cc nomen, hmm, wieder etwas Neues entdeckt.
    Heute kommt es mir besonders wichtig vor, RealitÀt und Phantasie zu unterscheiden.
    Aber auch Phantasie von Vorstellungskraft.
    Und dann geschehen manchmal Dinge ganz real in 3D, die passen erst mal nicht, in gar nichts Bekanntes, aber das ist dann nicht schlimm, wenn man einigermaßen genug Roggenbrot gekostet hat, so war es bei mir!!!
    Oder man findet den passenden Therapeuten, hey, was ein GlĂŒck!!!
    Bin ich froh, dass ihr keine nÀchtlichen Gespenster-Begegnungen hattet.
    Am liebsten wĂŒrde ich mal barfuß ĂŒber diese Kopfsteine gehen…

    Es gibt natĂŒrlich kein Pauschalrezept fĂŒr alles…
    Normen, normal, funktionieren, herrschen, dienen, erfahren, erleben, begreifen,…noch viele Wörter zum Nachdenken fĂŒr mich, B ro t, W ein…ganz schrecklich viel zum Denken… alchimy oder alchemie…chimchimcherre ist auch eine Pflanze(ich schrieb zuerst Pfalzen), habt ihr das gewusst Siri und Selma???!!!
    Manchmal könnte man verrĂŒckt werden, aber eigentlich ist das doch auch keine Lösung.

      heute ist Wahltag in England, da ist es ganz besonders wichtig, Fantasie und RealitÀt deutlich auseinander zu halten.
      Auf diesem Kopfsteinpflaster ist es anstrengend zu gehen. Es passt perfekt zur AtmosphĂ€re, aber es stellt eine Herausforderung fĂŒr die FĂŒĂŸe dar. Jedoch lĂ€ngst nicht alle Straßen in Rye sind so gepflastert.
      Wir sind große Freunde vom Roggenbrot. Masterchen pflegt immer Roggenbrot fĂŒr uns zu backen. Wir lieben dieses Masterchen-Brot sehr, zumal englisches Brot nicht nach unserem Geschmack ist.
      Man muss nicht so viel ĂŒber Esoterisches nachdenken, sonst wird man, wie es C.G. Jung einige Zeit war, verrĂŒckt.
      Wir gehen jetzt zu einem Vortrag ĂŒber die Arktis zu dem eine warme Suppe gereicht wird. Hier haben wir Hochnebel und knapp ĂŒber Null Grad.

    • Hoffe, es war ein interessanter Vortrag und die Suppe war lecker!(?)
      Der Mensch lebt nicht vom Brot allein.
      Musste ich doch direkt mal nachschauen, wer das sagte…
      Wie unglaublich blöd kann man sein, ich flĂŒchte in die Demut und arbeite meditativ und ruhig atmend, singend und tanzend, vor mich hin…
      Die Iren und Schotten finden das Wahlergebnis nicht so prickelnd, das wird noch spannend.
      Ich muss euch sagen, selbst heiraten war nicht drin, weil ich mich in so einem weißen Kleid wie in einem der bekannten Ballette gefĂŒhlt hĂ€tte.
      Die Rolle der Braut, Prinzessin, Königin, Hexe, Meer(jungfrau), etc..im wahren Leben keine Option.
      Versuche es weiter mit dem Denken, nicht zu viel, auch mal das Denken wegrÀumen, in der Stille, ist klar!
      Hier regnet es leicht, Vogelkonzert draußen im Garten.

      der Vortrag war informativ, mit vielen guten Fotos und gut vorgetragen. Es ging ĂŒber die Biologie und Geographie des arktischen Skandinaviens. Das war besonders spannend, da Masterchen diese Gegend kennt. Es waren Freunde von uns, ein Paar, das diesen Vortrag hielt.
      Ja, das Wahlergebnis ist schockierend, es liegt leider im Trend der Weltpolitik. Johnson ist eine Art europÀische Trump-Version. Die SNP, die Schottische Nationalpartei, hat echt gut abgeschnitten. Das gibt der schottischen UnabhÀngigkeitsbewegung Aufschwung. Die Nordiren werden wirtschaftlich schwer unter einem Brexit leiden. Anyway

    • Liebe Pia,
      die Suppen sind bei diesen LunchvortrĂ€gen im Bird-Reserve Zentrum stets die gleichen seit vielen Jahren. Du kannst wĂ€hlen zwischen Lauch-Kartoffelsuppe und Tomaten-Möhrensuppe. Wir alle vier wĂ€hlen seit langem die rote Tomaten-Möhrensuppe, die mĂ€ĂŸig lecker ist. Die Lauch-Kartoffelsuppe ist irgendwie dick ohne Geschmack. Dazu essen wir ein ein dunkles Brötchen, das in Deutschland glatt als Weißbrot durchgegangen wĂ€re. Die salzige Butter macht es essbar. Dagegen gab’s eben bei der Weihnachtsfeier des National Trust ein relativ leckeres 3 GĂ€nge Menu, das wir uns vor einiger Zeit zusammenstellen konnten. Die Stimmung war gut . Das Mittagessen ging von 12 bis 16h, ohne dass es langweilig wurde – selbst Masterchen nicht, der solchen Treffen grundsĂ€tzlich skeptisch gegenĂŒbersteht.

      nee, nee, das ist ein Vorurteil, dass die EnglĂ€nder schlecht essen. Unsere Freunde sind fast alle Gourmets und hier gibt es auch edle Restaurants mit Sterneköchen. Aber es gibt in anderen Gruppen auch noch die alte Form des englischen Essens mit Spaghetti on Toast und diese fĂŒrchterlichen anĂ€mischen Bohnen aus der Dose, Baked Beans. Es ist eher so, dass Masterchen nicht so am Essen interessiert ist. Aber Dina und Masterchen kochen meist gemeinsam richtig lecker fĂŒr uns alle. Das Essen auf der Weihnachtsfeier war fĂŒr eines bei Massenveranstaltungen richtig gut.

    Danke fuer diesen wieder einmal fantastisch bebilderten aufschlussreichen Beitrag. Obwohl ich schon lange wusste, wie pittoresk Rye ist, hat es bisher nie in eine Reiseplaene gepasst. Aber dieser Blogartikel erhoeht den Anreiz. Mal sehen, wann es endlich dazu kommt. Einen Plan fuer Englands Sueden von der Ost- bis zur Westspitze [oder umgekehrt] habe ich im Grunde schon fertig ausgearbeitet. Es fehlt halt nur die Zeit, bei alll unseren anderen Plaenen.

      ja prima, dass dir unsere Post gefallen hat 🙂 🙂 Da freuen wir uns 🙂 🙂
      Zu Rye: Rye ist wunderschön und wenn ihr in Rye seid, unbedingt im Meermaid Inn ĂŒbernachten – Übernachtung & Essen & Service dort sind super. FĂŒr dich als Fotograf sind auch noch die Seven Sisters gleich in der NĂ€he. Unten am Strand eine unirdische Landschaft. Und jetzt kommt das große ABER, die StĂ€dte wie Hastings dort in Sussex sind erschreckend heruntergekommen, voller Down-and-Outies. Wir sind von unserer KĂŒste hier das nicht gewohnt und waren erschrocken. Ein schöner Ort, der auch nicht weit von Rye entfernt ist, ist Sissinghurst, dass unbedingt einen Besuch Wert ist.
      Hier war es nach einem sonnigen aber windigen Tag gestern auch hochnebelgrau, aber immerhin war es trocken. FĂŒr die Jahreszeit ist es VIEL zu warm, eine Schande, wir hatten heute plus 5 Grad C. Wir machten es uns im Haus urgemĂŒtlich, denn bei uns hat die vorweihnachtliche Faulenzzeit begonnen. Euch wĂŒnschen wir auch eine gemĂŒtliche, entspannt harmonische Vorweihnachtszeit.

    • Lieber Klausbernd,
      wirklich fotogen ist dieses Staedtchen, und irgendwann werde ich es bestimmt auch vor die Linse kriegen. Nicht von die “Seven Sisters”, wohl aber vom “South Foreland” habe ich uebrigens nach einem Foto von mir ein Aquarell gemalt. Das haengt jetzt bei uns an der Wand.
      Dass viele der einstmals so schoenen Kuestenstaedte in England mittlerweile sehr heruntergekommen sind, dass hatte ich schon mitbekommen.

      wir sitzen vor einem roaring fire mit Drink und Buch – urgemĂŒtlich. Leider, leider kein Schnee, es ist viel zu warm, so um 5 bis 6 Grad C. Das ist doch falsch um diese Zeit! Wir sind heute mit dem Boot zu den grey seals am Blakeney Point gefahren. Das war toll!
      Ja, Rye wird euch sicherlich gefallen. Der Verfall der KĂŒstenstĂ€dte ist schon dramatisch. Man bekommt das hier in Norfolk gar nicht mit,.

    • Hallo Klausbernd,
      hier ist es ja selten so weihnachtlich wie ich es von Deutschland gewohnt bin. Schnee ist hier selten. Vor etwa drei Wochen war es draussen fuer ein paar Stunden mal mit “Puderzucker” ueberzogen, aber das war’s dann schon. Mal sehen, was die ersten Monate des kommenden Jahres bringen. Kaelte [=Nachtfroeste] bis runter zu -10 Grad hatten wir allerdings schon enige Male. Auch die naechste Nacht wird wieder unter Null sein – wenn auch nur knapp.
      Also ein Mann mit vielen Talenten bin ich nur aber wirklich nicht. Das Aquarell ist mir zwar ganz gut gelungen, aber das war auch Eines der ganz wenigen. Und es hat sich als ein Problem erwiesen: ich traue mich jetzt nicht mehr ans Malen, weil Bedenken habe, dass ich ein so gutes nie wieder schaffe. Mal sehen, ob die “Traute” wiederkommt.

    • Lieber Pit,
      hier ist alles von den Weihnachtsvorbereitungen geprĂ€gt. Wir feiern nĂ€mlich Weihnachten gemĂ€ĂŸ der skandinavischen und deutschen Tradition morgen Abend. Siri 🙂 und 🙂 Selma sind schon völlig aus dem HĂ€uschen. Dina studiert mit Selma KochbĂŒcher fĂŒr unseren Weihnachtsbraten.
      Hier ist es nun endlich etwas kĂŒhler geworden, knapp ĂŒber Null und sonnig. Wir holen gleich das Fleisch von unserem Lieblingsmetzger, der am Ende der Welt Angus-Rinder zĂŒchtet und immer mehr im Umfang seinem Zuchtbullen gleicht.
      Masterchen hat ĂŒbrigens frĂŒher auch Aquarelle gemalt. Ihn ging’s wie dir, er glaubt nicht, dass er solch feine Bilder wie damals wieder hinbekommt. Er malte Mandalas.

      weisst Du eigentlich, dass Du an meiner Aquarellmalerei Schuld bist? 😉 Du und Susanne Haun! Du hattest mal einen Blogbeitrag mit Deinem Tagebuch von Deiner Arktisreise und darin waren so wunderbare handgemalte Bilder. Und als ich die Bemerkung habe fallen lassen, dass ich das gerne auch machen mich aber nicht daran trauen wuerde, hat Susanne mir geraten, es einfach einmal zu versuchen. Ein Tagebuch ist da zwar nicht draus geworden, wohl aber Farbskizzen und Aquarelle. Und ich habe wirklich erntshaft vor, wieder damit anzufangen.

      danke fĂŒr die Peanuts-Karte, ĂŒber die wir uns SEHR freuten. Und stell dir vor, Snoopy mit Jo Cool hatte Dina lange als Bildschirmhintergrund. Sie ist ein großer Snoopy-Peanuts-Fan.
      Das ist ja fein, dass ich dich zum Malen bewegen konnte. Ich war ja in der Arktis mit einer Illustratorin und Expeditionsmalerin, die mich wiederum zum Aquarellmalen inspirierte. Nach meiner Mandalamalerei hatte ich nÀmlich bis zu dieser Expedition auch jahrelang nicht mehr gemalt.
      So, jetzt geht’s hinaus zum Weihnachtsspaziergang. Wir haben nĂ€mlich tolles Wetter hier, wenige Grade ĂŒber Null und Sonnenschein.

    • Der Film ist echt Klasse, nicht wahr, lieber Klaus?
      Was ich zu diesem Blog-Post hier noch sagen wollte: ich habe mal wieder ein Bild der lieben Dina “geklaut” und das Nachtfoto der Strasse mit dem Mermaid Inn als Bildschirmhintergrund sowohl fuer meinen grossen Bildschirm fuer den Desktop als auch fuer meinen Laptop genommen. Und ganz bald sehe ich mir dieses fantastische Bild auch einmal auf unserem (Riesen)fernsehbildschirm an. Da bin ich schon ganz gespannt drauf. Wenn Dina weiter so fotografiert – und das wird sie ja – und ich weiter so “klaue”, dann muss ich bestimmt bald Lizenzgebuehren bezahlen! 😀 😀

  54. Es roggt!!! Heute bin ich verstört und brÀuchte Erholung, mache bestimmt bald mal einen Ausflug zum Laacher See.
    Könnte einen Tipp gebrauchen, welcher Wortstamm ist den Dryas? Also laut Wiki(pedia) handelt es sich um eine weiße silberwurzelige Blume mit 8 BlĂ€ttern…

    Doch nicht:
    Es wird noch 2 Tage getanzt und dann nĂ€he und bastele ich bis ins neue Jahr hinein fĂŒr die nĂ€chste große Show, weihnachtlich dieses Jahr nur innen.
    Da eine kaputte alte Schallplatte bei uns vor der HaustĂŒr lag: “Stillle Nacht, heilige Nacht”, die Fischerchöre und Heintje “Mama”, bin ich mal wieder höchst verstört, halte mich aber locker. Bald mache ich den Ausflug…ich jogge um den See herum, wenn ich es schaffe…Siri, Selma, könnt ja mitkommen, wenn es euch im guten alten England zu langweilig wird vorm Kamin…

    • Guten Morgen, liebes Pialein fein,
      Siri 🙂 und 🙂 Selma lernten in der Feenschule, dass die Dryaden die griechischen Baum- und Pflanzengeister waren. Darauf wird `DryasÂŽ wohl zurĂŒckgehen.
      Hier haben wir gerade fĂŒrchterliches Wetter, warm und Regen. Da werden wir es uns gemĂŒtlich im Haus machen, etwas lesen, den Kamin anheizen und die letzten Geschenke verpacken. Dinalein und Masterchen haben noch einmal Robbendienst am Wochenende. Da fahren wir mit dem Boot zu den Robben. Allerdings haben viele Kegelrobben bereits geboren, ihre Jungen gesĂ€ugt und sind schon wieder im weiten Meer verschwunden. Vorige Woche gab’s in etwa isg. 8000 Robben am Blakeney Point, da musste man aufpassen, wo man hintrat, um nicht auf ein Junges zu treten oder den erwachsenen Robben zu nahe zu kommen.
      Siri 🙂 und 🙂 Selma sind leider unabkömmlich, da sie noch “hochgeheim” vorm Kamin etwas basteln und herumpuzzeln.
      Wir wĂŒnschen dir und deiner Familie wunderschöne, entspannte Feiertage und alles, alles Gute zum neuen Jahr.

  56. This I found in “Tide” by Hugh Aldersey-Williams concerning the Cinque Ports:
    The ports of the Cinque Ports were granted certain reliefs and privileges from Henry II in 1155. “Exemption from tax and tallage, right to soc ans sac, tol and team, blodwit and fledwit, pillory and tumbril, infangentheof and outfanggentheof, mundbryce, waifs and strays, flotsam and jetsam and ligan.”
    That’s concerning everything you can find on the beach. These privileges were granted because these places were often be attacked from overseas and they provided ships to fight these powers.
