We are very excited to announce that Klausbernd has been invited to our dear friend Rebecca Budd’s podcast TEA TOAST and TRIVIA to talk to her about COLOURS.

Rebecca aka Clanmother from Vancouver, you know from blogging here, produces podcasts with her husband Don very professionally. These podcasts are run on the Anchor platform which will send it out to eight listening platforms including Apple, Google and Spotify. They are also published on SoundCloud and TeaToastTrivia. From there it’s shared on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.
You are very welcome to listen to her talks with special people from all over the world on Tea Toast and Trivia.

It was a great experience to produce this podcast about different aspects of colour with Rebecca and Don as the one who runs the recording technique. They produced a relaxed atmosphere and made it easy for me to talk freely. Rebecca was very well prepared, much better than a lot of journalists I had interviewing me.
I was quite hesitant to do a more than half an hour’s talk in English as it not my mother tongue. But with Rebecca interviewing it was easy and even fun and soon I forgot about grammar and pronunciation.
Who wants to know more about colour as I wrote here on our blog will find it listening to Rebecca’s and my podcast here.

Thank you for listening in, Per Magnus. Dina’s portrait of Klausbernd is extraordinary, isn’t it! (Red is my favourite colour!) I was honoured that Klausbernd shared his insights on TTT. We were to have visited Cley-Next-The-Sea this past September but our plans were curtailed, as so many others, by Covid19. Meeting up with Klausbernd via technology was a great way to connect. Klausbernd has a wonderful way of opening the doors to learning.

Don and I are thrilled that you shared your insights on TTT, Klausbernd. I had been thinking about the venue of podcasting for a couple of years before I took a deep breath and leaped into the unknown. These past months of living in Covid19 has confirmed that we must look for ways to connect virtually and share authentic conversations. When I was a child my mother would make me tea and cinnamon toast. This was our time together. The memory of our talking and laughing about seemingly trivia things are embedded in my heart. Thank you, Klausbernd for this most excellent discussion – you were brilliant! I look forward to our next podcast on beauty. The adventures continue…. 🤗🤗🤗🤗🙏🙏🙏🙏

Thank you for your heartwarming, encouraging comments, Dina. Klausbernd’s knowledge and experience is extraordinary and I look forward to many more conversations. What I found fascinating was how Klausbernd brought out the personalities of Newton and Goethe – he brought them to life – and how humanity gained knowledge over the centuries. We are surrounded by colour and yet know so very little about how colour influences who we are, the choices we make, the connections we seek. Since our discussion, I have been looking into Goethe’s theory of colours and found this quote “The highest goals that man can achieve is amazement.” Goethe, Theory of Colours. Sending many hugs and love your way, Dina!!!

My dearest Rebecca,
I noticed I have changed my kind of communication since this isolation caused by Covid19. Actually, I communicate deeper and more authentic and only with people where it makes sense. I don’t waste time to communicate artificially any more. And I noticed for this mode of communication it doesn’t matter that it is mostly virtual. This virtual communication provides a big change to communicate intensely and make sense. Thank you VERY much for providing the means of communication and create a space of authencity and that we can talk that easily about topics we are interested in.

I wasn`t on any other social side before neither. It was Rebecca asking me if I could do a podcast. I only knew podcasts from the Polar Learning Channel of Quark Expeditions. When Rebecca introduced me to her “TeaToast and Trivia”-site I was immediately taken by it. In the beginning I was quite hesitant because of my German accent and I know that my English is far from being perfect. But Rebecca and Don created such an easy and inspiring atmosphere that I could just talk like I would do with friends at our kitchen table.

Dear Rebecca,
the translation of Goethe’s quote is quite adequate. I suppose he got this idea from Alexander von Humboldt, a good friend of his.
Goethe was quite wise. You can see that in his “Faust”. There you can find so many clever insights into life. It’s maybe because he was active in so many fields besides literature. He got to know the world as politician and diplomat, a scientist and nevertheless as a lover of many women.

It was fun producing this podcast. It was one of the few interviews in which I was allowed to talk about colour theory. At the beginning of most of the interviews I gave, the interviewer told me that talking about colour theory is not allowed in her or his program because the listeners don’t understand it and they want to hear what they know already. In this podcast, I was free to talk about any aspect of colour. And Rebecca was VERY well prepared.
Wishing you all the best

I am overwhelmed with surprise that interviewers would consider their listeners to lack interest or understanding about colour theory. Who wouldn’t be interested?!!! Colour is everywhere – in fashion, in home decorating, in art, in television, on signage and traffic signals. What I most appreciated about our discussion, Klausbernd, is your confirmation that colour IS vitally important, that we must explore how colour can sway our thinking, change our actions and even suppress our appetite. Thank you for your generosity in sharing your knowledge.

Lieber Klausbernd,

Good morning Rebecca and also Hanne and Klausbernd,
it is not so bad that I could not comment on the TTT Blog, I have the way over Hanne and Klausbernds blog wound, in order to communicate.
Wordpress is a very complex system, I just switched from premium to business tariff. There are still a lot of problems and all the settings I made in my old blog were gone and had to be done again. Sometimes I only saw the effects, but did not know how to change them. It is a challenge.
I listened to the podcast with Klausbernd with great interest. On the one hand, as an artist I am especially interested in colors and on the other hand I was happy to hear Klausbernd’s voice, even in English. Now I am excited about Hannes Podcast and I am looking forward to it.

Good evening from Vancouver, Susanne! I am delighted that you enjoyed this discussion. Klausbernd is a brilliant communicator – he understands how to bring clarity and definition to complex ideas. As an artist, you recognize the nuances of colour, light and shadow. We all lead busy lives and are focused on many things. For many (and I include myself in this category) it is easy not to notice the details of colour or fully appreciate how colours influence our emotions, choices etc. I am so very pleased that we have connected over the years. I am looking forward to Hanne’s podcast. She has a remarkable way of capturing stories using her camera.
There’s a continuous spectrum of visible radiation, so who decided how many basic colors to spit that continuum into?
LikeLiked by 4 people
Dear Steve,
there are only 6 colours: black, white, red (magenta), blue (cyan), green and yellow. All the other colours are shades and mixtures of these colours. This found the engraver Le Blon in the 18th c. already and Goethe made it know to a larger public in his theory of colours. I find it debatable that green is seen as a basic colour because as a surface colour it’s a mixture of blue and yellow and we don’t have a receptor in our eyes reacting to green. On the other hand, green is a primary colour as a colour of light.
We can see colours from 750 nm (infrared) to 400 nm (ultraviolet).
Thanks and cheers

Interessante Episode, Klausbernd.

Klausbernd has already written at least one book about colors, their physics, their perception, their social role, etc.

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to your and Rebecca’s podcast on Soundcloud. Great questions and lots of new information to take in, truly fascinating. I like to wear symbols too, this afternoon I have a meeting and my top is lines of navy blue stars on a white background with silver thread.
I just love colour, in nature, clothing, in my home. I have just painted a mural on our living room wall, I’d love to know what you made of my colour choices and shapes hehe. One of my favourite colour combinations to wear are red and pink together but my Mum always tells me they clash and are too much hehe. I particularly like a variety of colours that pop out.
Finally, I have a very bright yellow top that I like to wear when I communicate online with people it really pops and it was interesting to listen to you saying yellow was the colour of communication. thank you both.

Dear Charlotte,
thank you very much for listening to our podcast about colour. Great that you like it 👍
I can well imagine that navy blue stars on white with a silver shimmering looks great. Well, pink and red wouldn’t be my favourite combination. There are normative aesthetics saying that colours quite near to each are not ideal combinations. Well, that’s a question of individual taste, isn’t it? I got a bright yellow sweatshirt I really like but unfortunately, it’s old now. I have to look for a new one. As I am blond as you are I usually wear the cold colours of the right side of the colour circle.
Keep well and thanks for commenting

Dear Charlotte,
we just read about a research how colours are connected with certain emotions in different cultures (unfortunately it is in German only: https://www.spektrum.de/news/rot-wie-liebe-weiss-wie-trauer/1767867). In nearly all cultures red and pink are both associated with love. So you have a strong connection here.
Wishing you a wonderful day

Thank you for listening in, Charlotte. As I write this comment, I am wearing a shirt that is a subtle shade of pink with small flecks of red, so I share your love of this colour combination. I have looked in my closet and notice that I have very little yellow. YIKES! Now that Klausbernd has enlightened me on the importance of yellow in communication, I am determined to include more yellow. Klausbernd is a wealth of information and his ability to share this knowledge is exceptional. He has promised to come back and talk about beauty. Exciting!!!

Yay ColourClan 🙂 I wonder if colour preferences have anything to do with birth signs too? Or perhaps because I have blue eyes do you? I have hardly any black clothes, I had to buy a specific black dress to do choir work in, the first performance I did in the choir the only thing black I owned was a calf length black tutu that I combined with a black long sleeve fleece top they hid me at the back lol.
I wear a lot of vibrant pink it makes me feel happy. My yellow top always goes down well over FaceTime/skype calls. Beauty will indeed be interesting. I don’t wear makeup on a daily basis usually only when performing under strong lights or if having photographs taken. Men don’t feel the need to wear any makeup but women feel better wearing it, my question to Klaus would be why? Also some of the best make up artists I have seen are the drag race professionals but it would be too heavy in the street but they look so beautiful on the stage so would more men wear make up if it was generally more acceptable? If not why?
Best wishes Charlotte 🙂

Good morning, dear Charlotte,
you can assign the colours to the 12 star-signs but I don’t know any research about the star-sign and the colour preferences of a person. I don’t know of any research about the connection of colour preferences and the colour of the eyes of a person neither. But the colour of the eyes of a person can tell you which colour will suit you.
Makeup and men, well, at nearly all my public events I was wearing makeup especially when I was filmed and photographed. Before that in our freak-time, most of the men I knew were using kohl around their eyes. But I know no men, except gay men, who use to wear makeup in their everyday life today. Men wearing makeup doesn’t fit in our concept of masculinity. For generations the beautiful men were the heros and they are rather rough than stylish.
Makeup was mostly seen as wicked before the beginning of the 20th c. That changed in the twenties of the 20th c. when it became a symbol of emancipation and freedom, of course for women only.
Typically for a man I never thought about makeup before. That’s an area of colour I neglected. Makeup was a topic In the movment “colour me beautiful” which originates in Johannes Itten’s (the master of colour in the Bauhaus) observation which colour suits which kind of person.
Thanks for your interesting questions.
Wishing you a wonderful weekend.

Dear Rebecca,
Fuschia is similar to the primary colour magenta in printing. It’s a kind of broken red. And as it is basically a mixture of red and pink it gives power.
As it is Gwendolin’s favourite colour it the right colour for her transformation.

Liebe Pia,
Ein sicheres Inernet … was heißt denn `sicher´ in diesem Zusammenhang?

Such a fascinating conversation about colour. I so enjoyed Klaus’s thoughts and explanations on the subject. My husband Chris just told me that when he was a fresher at university, one of the medical students devised a test to research how differently people see colour. They had to look at a card with different colour dots and say what number they first saw. I know that sometimes we have a bit of an argument about whether something is green or blue. I usually settle for turquoise which is bluey green or greeny blue. 🙂 We are so fortunate to have all the different colours in nature. Flowers are especially beautiful of course. Their brilliant colours never cease to amaze me. Well done Klaus, Rebecca and Don for such an interesting podcast.

As we speak about colour: In the National Geographic magazine 12.2020, you find a short article about Extreme Colours (p. 34).
This tests where you look at dots and should tell if you see colour are used for the diagnosis of colour blindness.
Modern colours are partly produced like flowers and animals do it. It’s not a pigment that absorbs every colour except the one you see but you manipulate the molecules of the surface making them radiate the colour you see. Such colours are much more intense than those produced by pigments.
Wishing you all the best. Keep well and happy

I have just listened to your voice, Klausbernd. And the fascinating topic of colours! I learned new things, and was quite fascinated. I loved the stories of yellow – I knew about China, but that yellow makes those cars look faster!…made me smile for some minutes. Colour is important in human life and has always been. As I have worked with languages for many years, I loved hearing you speaking English. I must say I would never have guessed your voice to be so soft, and I thought I heard a smile on your face several times. Surprised! You often look solemn and serious, but my impression today was a sunny one. Thank you for doing podcasts – I am already looking forward to the next session.
