Seal Season

Dina is all smiles 🙂 The National Trust published a press release with many of her photos. Several pictures appeared in the Daily Mail, in some local newspaper and also in The Times.

Dina strahlt 🙂 Gestern hat der National Trust einen Pressebericht mit vielen ihrer Fotos veröffentlicht. Eines ihrer Bilder von einer Kegelrobbe mit ihrem Neugeborenem wurde gar von der TIMES abgedruckt (The Times, November 18, S.25) und Bilder von ihr sind in der Online-Ausgabe der Daily Mail und dem Pressebericht des National Trust erschienen, der auch ein Robbenbild im Logo seiner Nord-Norfolk-Gruppe zeigt. Wie kam es dazu?

The Edge. Here the sea and the horizon connect beautifully while keeping their distance.

The Landrover makes it slowly along the shingle ridge towards the Blakeney Point. It’s a forty minutes ride shaking you awake and rewarding you with gorgeous views. So got Dina near the breeding grounds of the grey seals. Then a little hike, climbing a dune and suddenly a beach full of seals lies to their feet. Dina gets behind a dune and starts to photograph.

Langsam arbeitete sich der Landrover durch ein lockeres Gemisch aus Kies und Sand dem Blakey Point entgegen. Über eine halbe Stunde Fahrt, die einen wach rüttelt. So gelangt Dina in die Nähe der Robbenbänke. Noch ein kleiner Spaziergang, das Besteigen einer Düne und schon liegt eine robbenübersäter Sandbank vor ihr. Hier möchte Dina fotografieren.

Nearly half of the worldwide grey seal population is breeding on the UK and Irish beaches. Blakeney Point is the biggest colony in England. They certainly have picked a beautiful place! 3339 seal pups were born here last year. This year more than 4000 are expected.

Fast die Hälfte aller Kegelrobben der Welt brüten an irischen und englischen Stränden. Der Blakeney Point ist die größte englische Brutkolonie. Die wissen, wo es schön ist 😉 Letztes Jahr wurden 3339 Robben hier geboren. Dieses Jahr werden es 4000 und mehr sein.

The wide lower beach is crowded. Everywhere are cows, bulls and freshly born pubs with their white fur. Dina is allowed into this no-go-area as the official property photographer of the National Trust – of course without disturbing the seals. The cows can behave defensively aggressive and move faster than you think. Dina stalks the different groups like an old trapper, in the background the growling roars of the seals at the waterline.

Zu Dinas Füßen liegt der Strand übersät mit Robbenkühen, Bullen und den Kleinen mit ihrem weißen Fell. Als offizielle Fotografin des National Trust darf sie dieses geschützte Gebiet betreten, natürlich ohne die Tiere zu stören. Die Mütter sind angriffslustig und erschreckend schnell. Dina pirscht sich vorsichtig an die Gruppen heran begleitet vom Heulen der Meute an der Wasserlinie.

Someone who admired Dina’s seal photography suggested to include Dina (Hanne Siebers) in the portrait gallery of the National Trust that was published as book and website for the 125. birthday of the Trust this year. You can see her in the picture book “A Portrait of the National Trust” (p.46) with her camera. “Perky photographer, cool!” was Siri’s 🙂 and 🙂 Selma’s comment.

Ein Fan ihrer Robbenbilder schlug vor, Dina (Hanne Siebers) in die Portraitgallerie des National Trust aufzunehmen, die als Buch und Website zum 125. jährigen Bestehen vor ein paar Tagen herauskam. In dem Bildband “A Portrait of the National Trust“ könnt ihr sie auf ihrem Dienstwagen mit Kamera bewundern (S.46). “Kecke Fotografin, cool!” meinten Siri 🙂 und 🙂 Selma.

  4. When I was young, we’d express affection for our best friends and boyfriends by writing “sealed with a kiss” on the envelopes of our letters. I’d say that, in this case, Dina has sealed our affection for these animals with her photos of the seals themselves. Both the animals and the photos are quite wonderful.

    • Hello Linda, I’m playing “sealed with kiss” as I write this, listening to Hyland puts a big smile on my face. So does being out in nature with the seals. I suppose you couldn’t say I’m all sealed up, but it comes close. 😉 Thank you for your lovely input!

      the count could be done from areal photography. But the National Trust doesn’t like drones above its grounds.
      Dina can answer your question much better as she helped with the last seal count. She was hoping to find the last pup to make it 3340 but she didn’t it.

    • Hello Steve, thank you so much for your kind comment.
      Until this year, we counted the seal pup as follows.
      At the beginning of the pupping season, every pup is being counted. When the number is rising, the rangers go out every third day and counts only the seal pups with an umbilical cord still attached (after three days the red cord turns black and falls off). This number is added to the number of pups already recorded. I was in the reserve yesterday and it already looked like it normally does when we are well into December with more than 1000 pups being born, absolutely amazing.

  8. Congratulations, Hanne, it’s wonderful to see that your work is enjoyed by so many people. It also makes me happy to see the byline with your name above each image – too often, photographers don’t get credit for their work, and your excellent photos both educate and inspire. I remember your posts about seals and how excited you were to be able to work so closely with them. The Trust picked the right person! One thing – a typo – it’s not almost half the world’s seal population that breeds on UK & Irish beaches, but half the world’s Grey seal population. Many more seal species breed all across the globe, thankfully, but it’s good to know this breeding ground is doing so well. I clicked on the link for the National Trust book and it looks great – I like what the photographer did with those portraits. Is there a way we can see yours? 🙂 Have a good weekend!

      thanks a lot for telling us about that typo. We’ll correct this. The problem is that in the German language, well in a colloquial talk, you don’t make a difference between common seals and grey seals. A bit like in English, it’s all seals. We have to admit before we came here seals were seals for us. We didn’t know about common and grey seals. By the way in our grey seal colony, you find common seals as well. They look that small in comparison to the grey seals.

      I would have liked to post the image in the book, but so far I have not received the ok to do so and it says “under no circumstances”… It was a tight embargo on the project. The NT have more than 65 000 volunteers in the UK so to be handpicked for the final 125 was a huge boost to my photography. The head of photography had planned and worked on this project for more than a year with so many people being involved. The exhibition of the portraits was supposed to start in London last May and then tour the several NT estates throughout the UK.
      That’s all history now and just one drop in the oceanic fairway of Covid-19.

    I can well understand why the Daily Mail, Times and the National Trust gladly use Dina’s pictures. I checked out the links you left for us and you must be very proud! I remembered that you were part of this outstanding preservation organization and I hope one day I will see Dina’s accomplishments shown on National geographic, because she certainly proves to be a professional.

      das ist ja die Schwierigkeit, dass Dina bis jetzt kein Geld mit ihrer Fotogfafie verdient. Das ist genau der Punkt, den du ansprichst, vom unbezahlten Artikel zum professionellen, d.h. bezahlten, Artikel zu kommen. Der Schritt ist ja der wichtigste, um wirklich weiterzukommen. Aber Dina wird da sicherlich etwas zu schreiben.

    • Wir haben es teils heiter, teils wolkig, 15 Grad und fasst windstill. Wir werden nachdem wir eine großen Lebensmittellieferung bekommen haben, in die Sauna gehen. Das tut uns auch immer gut.

      Die Anerkennung ist überwältigend. Schön wäre es, wenn der Einsatz sich irgendwann auch geldlich auszahlen würde, da hast du wohl Recht. Es ist ein hart umkämpfter Markt und momentan freue ich mich einfach über die geöffeneten Türen. Wer weiß was als nächstes kommt.
      Was ist das für ein verrücktes Jahr gewesen. Irgendwann tauschten wir uns über einen Besuch hier bei uns aus and dann kam Covid-19. Es wird wieder eine Zeit mit weniger Restriktionen kommen. Ich hoffe, dir geht’s gut und dass dir deine Fotografie und die schöne Kunst die viel Freude bereitet.

    • Liebe Hanne, ja, ein ver- rücktes Jahr, da hast du Recht. Ich bin gerade sehr beschwingt, habe ja ein paar Aktionen im Blog und bei twitter laufen, Postkarten, Poster, Bilder und so, hier strömen die Bestellungen nur so rein. Ich freue mich RIIIIESIG über die Anerkennung und die Unterstützung, die ich ja gut brauchen kann, da durch Covid alle meine Jobs weggefallen sind, ich aber ein zu kleiner Fisch bin und deswegen auch keine staatlichen Hilfen bekommen, außer diesem unsäglichen Hartz IV.   23. Congratulations Dina. In the series of mother and pup at the beginning of this post I couldn’t help but notice how much the mothers face looked like that of a golden retriever dog. Both seem to bee very expressive with their look.

      my birthday tomorrow will be partyless. Well, one friend is coming around for a nice meal and Siri 🙂 and 🙂 Selma have something planned together with Dina but they don’t tell.
      Recommendation:
      From the books published in 2020, I liked most
      Xiaolu Guo “A Lover’s Discourse” – I like all the books of this Chinese author. It’s criticizing the English post-Brexit society, it’s a love story and a clever critique of everyday life in England. I am sure you will like reading it.
      Eley Williams “The Liar’s Dictionary” – that’s a novel about words, about linguistics. I found it quite funny.
      David Kehlmann “Tyll” – it reminded me of Mother Courage, it’s a historical novel set at the end of the Thirty Years’ War. I loved the beginning, the first 3/4 of the book very much, it’s getting a little lengthy at the end, but nevertheless, it’s worth reading.
      From the older books, I read recently I especially liked
      Arundhati Roy “The Ministry of Utmost Happiness”
      I read a lot of non-fiction books in the last half of this year about Mandeville, the calendar, time and quantum physics (a book I hardly understood).

      “Shantaram” und einige von Arundhati Roys Büchern sind ja die Ausnahme. In Deutschland bekam “Tyll” von Daniel Kehlmann großes Lob. Ich finde das Buch beginnt hervorragend, wird aber gegen Ende etwas langatmig. Es erinnerte mich an Mutter Courage. Der Narr ist ja stets ein dankbares Thema.

    • Guten Tag, liebe Susanne,
      wir hatten längere Zeit als üblich nicht geblogged, da uns, ehrlich gesagt, nichts einfiel, worüber wir es spannend fänden zu bloggen. Viel Action hatten wir auch. Hier begann gerade die Brutzeit der Robben. Du sahst damals eine kleinere Gruppe Seehunde, jetzt belagern tausende der viel größeren Kegelrobben den äußeren Blakeney Point. Da war unsere liebe Dina nicht mehr zu halten. Sie schoss mehrere Serien, Geburten, Sex on the Beach etc.
      Dina ist froh über ihren Erfolg, der sie motiviert, jetzt noch häufiger die Kegelrobben zu besuchen – was übrigens immer ein Aufwand ist. Sie benötigt einen ganzen Tag dafür. Ich komme bisweilen mit, aber oft bin ich zu faul und lese lieber.
      Lieb dass ihr euch sorgtet. Uns geht’s bestens, wir sind munter und fröhlich, was wir auch von euch hoffen. Heute wurde das Haus von Sommer- auf Winterbetrieb umgestellt. Gerade sind wir fertig geworden. Im Winter ziehen wir in unserem Kaminzimmer zusammen. Gemütlich!

      ich erinnere mich noch sehr gut an den Bladeney Point. Er hat mir auch viel Freude bereitet.
      Ich bin etwas schreibfaul, stelle ich gerade fest. Ich male an größeren Leinwänden, die ich nicht liegen lassen möchte, um zu schreiben.

    • Ach, lieber Pit, unser geliebtes Dinalein arbeitet wieder tief versunken an ihren Robbenbildern, die wir gestern aufnahmen, deswegen antworten wir dir erst einmal. Wir waren bis eben noch voll damit beschäftigt kleine bunte Gutscheine für Überraschungen für Dinas Adventskalender zu schreiben.

      also Blogpausen fallen mir “altem Laberhannes” ja gar nicht so leicht! 😀
      Aber ernsthaft: ich haette noch unheimlich viel auf Lager zum Bloggen. Da koennte ich wirklich tagtaeglich dranbleiben. Und jetzt ist ja schon wieder der Trip nach Port A. dazugekommen, wo ich doch noch nicht einmal ein einziges Wort zu dem zum Garner State Park geschrieben habe. Mal sehen, was zuerst kommt. Moeglicherweise Garner, denn die Bilder von Port A. muss ich ja moch erst bearbeiten.

    • Es ist ja auch toll, lieber Pit, immer wieder etwas von dir zu lesen und zu sehen.
      Wir benötigen größere Abstände zwischen unseren Posts, um diese zu recherchieren und vorzubereiten, so dass Text und Bild sich anmutig ergänzen.
      Heute hat Dina wieder eine kleine Fotostrecke über Seal-Sex on the beach in der größten Tageszeitung von East Anglia gehabt. Dina entpuppt sich zum Seal-Whisperer.

      Wir hatten gestern den ersten Schnee dieses Jahr, der jedoch leider nicht liegen blieb. Das war ganz witzig, ich gab gerade per Zoom ein Interview und sah, dass es plötzlich ziemlich stark anfing zu schneien. Das hat mich völlig aus dem Konzept gebracht. Jetzt um halb elf sind es drei Grad, es ist bedeckt und trocken. Morgen wird Dina wieder zum Robben Fotografieren gehen. Ich bleibe jedoch zu Hause.

    • Lieber Klausbernd,
      klar, fuer meine Artikel brauche ich nicht viel zu recherchieren, ich sollte mich aber wirklich bremsen mit dem Posten. Es nimmt einfach zu viel Zeit in Anspruch, und es gibt ja auch noch anderes (Wichtiges) im Leben. Aber andererseits: es macht mir eben auch Spass. Ich muss nur einfach die richtige Balance finden. Hier sind wir jetzt wieder heil und gesund von der Kueste zurueck, und jetzt geht es eben daran, die Bilder zu be- und verarbeiten und die Artikel [auch und besonders ueber unsere Wohnmobil-Erfahrungen] zu schreiben.
      Apropos Dina und das Sexleben der Seals: ist dass denn jugendfrei??!!
      Hier hatte es die vergangenen Tage Nachtfroeste, teils mit Rauhreif verbunden, aber auf Schnee muessen wir noch (lange) warten, wenn es denn ueberhaupt welchen gibt. Aber wenn wir welchen haben, dann sind wir bestimmt genauso aus dem Haeuschen wie Du.

    • Lieber Pit,
      well, die Engländer sind ja sehr prudish. Einige ihrer Bilder von Sex on the Beach sind heute wieder im Guardian erschienen, aber kein einziges Bild, auf dem man den Penis der Robbe sieht.
      Wir waren heute bei tollem Wetter nachmittags bei einem angeschwemmten 17m langen Sperm Wal. Dina machte viele Aufnahmen. Morgen geht sie wieder in den geschlossenen Teil des Naturschutzgebiets, um melanistic seals zu fotografieren. Die sind sehr selten. Normaler Weise werden die Robben mit weißem Fell geboren, die melanistic seals haben allerdings schwarzes Fell.
      Ich gehe morgen nicht mit Dina mit, sondern schreibe gemütlich an meinem Roman und lese. Dort hinauszufahren und dann noch zu gehen, ist immer ein Tagesausflug. Ich habe genug seal pups und dicke Robben gesehen. Nächste Woche gehe ich noch einmal mit, aber dann ist es genug für mich.

      und die Amerikaner haben ihre “Prudishness” von den Englaendern geerbt. Das geht so weit hier, dass man noch nicht einmal beim Hautarzt seine gesamte Koerperoberflaeche entbloessen muss.

    • Hm hm, entschuldige bitte wenn ich mich hier einmische, lieber Klausbernd, lieber Pit: Das mit den schwarzen Fell der Robben stimmt nicht ganz. ALLE werden mit weißen Fell geboren, erst mit dem Mausern lässt sich erkennen wer schwarzes Fell bekommt.
      Jetzt bin ich wieder schnell weg, es gibt einiges für den Ausflug ins Reservat vorzubereiten.

    Da fällt mir eine Annekdote ein: Vor vielen Jahren hat sich mal in der Hausfrauentanzgruppe eine Dame abgemeldet, weil sie beleidigt war, dass ich ihr Lieblingslied “I´ve been looking for freedom” von David Hasselhoff nicht zum Training verwenden wollte.
    …naja, ich hätte es einmal spielen können…mit Oropax in den Ohren, es war damals aber glaube ich eher der Sänger…
    Das Leben ist echt die gemischte Tüte zur Zeit oder, frei nach Forrest Gump, die Pralinenschachtel…

    Ansonsten habe ich Förderanträge ausgefüllt: für Luftfilteranlagen, Kamera, Projekte im Freien: Freilichtbühne Ebertpark, TanzTreppe Schillerplatz, Tanzgarten LU,…Einzelballettstunden bei den Leuten zuhause in ihrem Garten oder in meinem.
    P.P.P.S. Wünsche weiter viel Freude und gutes Gelingen mit den Fotos und super Motive!!!

      wir gratulieren dir gaaaaanz herzlich. Wir sind stolz auf dich. Well done! Royal Academy of Dance, na, viel besser geht’s doch nun wirklich nicht, SUPER!
      Wir können uns vorstellen, dass dieses Ausfüllen der Förderanträge ziemlich nervig ist, dazu kommen ja große Actionen wie Luftfilteranlage einbauen etc.
      Masterchen wird morgen ausführlich zur Sprache der Träume interviewt alles per Zoom für einen online Kongress zum Schlaf. Dinalein wird nun regelmäßig zum Blakeney Point gehen, um weiterhin `ihre Robben´ zu fotoafieren. Sie liebt es. Was für Masterchen seine Bücher sind, sind für Dinalein ihre Robben.
      Wir finden, was du machst großartig, spertoll.

      Indeed, Dina is all smiles. She is our star! Yesterday a series “Sex on the Beach” of seals copulating on our beach were published in the Guardian and today she is photographing seals again looking for black seals (melanistic grey seals). She is the seal whisperer 😉

  72. Wie schön! Dina ist ein Star! Großartig! Fotografin aus Leidenschaft! Man muss seinem Herzen folgen! (ok, das klingt jetzt vielleicht etwas abgedroschen…)
    Wie sich Robben an Land und im Wasser orientieren?
    Haben sie sich den Ort zum Brüten (oder wie das heißt) selbst ausgesucht?
    Wir freuen uns sehr mit euch und wünschen eine angenehme Woche!
    …hier ist jetzt “Nussknacker-Zeit”…Clara träumt nicht so gut, Nussknacker killt Mäusekönig…versuche das gerade den Tanzmäusen zu erklären…und tänzerisch zu verarabeiten.
    Wir schulen unser magisches Denken, hoffentlich geht das gut!
    Außerdem gibt es bei Zoom das Whiteboard, es entstehen gemeinschaftliche Kunstwerke aus Form und Farbe, manchmal tanzen wir gar nicht, weil das Malen uns so fasziniert…bis der Radiergummi kommt und alles löscht…weil die Zeit leider vorüber ist.

    • Liebes Pialein,
      stell dir vor, wir haben heute unseren Weihnachtsbaum gekauft und geschmückt und so viele leckerste Sache schon für Weihnachten eingekauft.
      Zu den Robben: Sie kehren stets wieder zu den Orten zum Gebären zurück, wo sie geboren wurden. Wie diese Robben navigieren, das wissen wir Buchfeen und auch Masterchen gar nicht. Ihr wichtigstes Sinnesorgan sind scheinbar ihre Barthaare, mit denen sie wohl Meeresströmungen wahrnehmen können und Bewegungen im Wasser. Vielleicht weiß dies Dina. Wir werden sie fragen.
      Hier ist es schön weihnachtlich, leichter Frost mit tollem Raureif und drinnen fein warm. Jetzt fehlt nur noch der Schnee.

  74. I’m so proud of you, Dina-Hanne, well done!! I know how dedicated you are and these photos are simply gorgeous. So many special moments captured, a joy to watch and no wonder the newspapers were happy to present them.
    As I previously wrote, I’m still self isolating after having been ill with Corona. That’s why I’m so late to this party. It’s something you think happens to others, I thought I was very careful, following all the government guidelines, but you can never be too careful.

      we hope you are recovering well and fast. We know some people here quite well who caught the virus too. They have all recovered well. It’s a problem that virus seems to have mutated, it’s now spreading easier.
      Thank you very much for liking Hanne-Dina’s photography. She is very ambitious and happy with her photography.
      We think we are safe. We hardly meet any people as we stay mostly at home but you can’t avoid contacts sometimes.
